The Actress-Packed Pirelli Calendar Continues With Feminist Flair In 2017

It seems as if Annie Leibovitz’s Pirelli revolution has stuck.

The Pirelli Calendar ― generally a model-filled item given to VIP customers of the Italian tire company along with politicians, royalty and other influential persons each year ― has made its 2017 debut, and appears to follow in the footsteps of Leibovitz’s progressive and hugely deviational 2016 edition.

Instead of models, German fashion photographer Peter Lindbergh chose actresses who he says have played an important role in his life. They are: Jessica Chastain, Penelope Cruz, Nicole Kidman, Rooney Mara, Helen Mirren, Julianne Moore, Lupita Nyong’o, Charlotte Rampling, Lea Seydoux, Uma Thurman, Alicia Vikander, Kate Winslet, Robin Wright, Zhang Ziyi and one non-actress, Anastasia Ignatova, the professor of political theory at the Moscow State University of International Relations.

Although the calendar is manufactured as a splashy advertisement for Pirelli, photographers have recently started using it to comment on women in media. Like Leibovitz’s subjects, Lindbergh’s are captured in black and white, simply clothed.

“In a time when women are represented in the media and everywhere else as ambassadors of perfection and youth, I thought it was important to remind everyone that there is a different beauty, more real and truthful and not manipulated by commercial or any other interests, a beauty which speaks about individuality, courage to be yourself and your own private sensibility,” the photographer said in a statement.

For many years, the tire company stuck to featuring nude or nearly nude women (think Kate Moss, Gisele Bündchen and Naomi Campbell) posed as if in homage to ‘50s pinups in the calendar it’s produced on and off since 1964.

Last year’s edition sparked discussion for its radical tonal shift. Instead of choosing women for their beauty, Leibovitz selected her female subjects based on their achievements, such as the New York Museum of Modern Art’s 77-year-old President Emerita Agnes Gund and 65-year-old author Fran Lebowitz. With a few exceptions ― including Amy Schumer, who was jokingly positioned as if she didn’t get the memo ― last year’s subjects stayed clothed, channeling a sense of optimism reflected in “the first credible woman presidential candidate” and increasing numbers of leading female characters in entertainment, an advertising executive told The New York Times.

At the time, it wasn’t clear whether Leibovitz’s message would continue in subsequent years.

But Lindbergh has made for a good follow-up. In his career as a fashion photographer, he is known for capturing his (mainly female) subjects naturally and with cinematic flair.

“I must say, there is only one way for the future, and this is to define women as strong and independent,” he told Interview magazine in 2014.

The 40 images in the Pirelli calendar were taken in Berlin, Los Angeles, New York, London and a beach in France ― but to see them in their entirety, it appears you’ll still have to befriend some royalty.

A Lot Of Women Are Shaving Their Faces. Here's What You Need To Know.

$

0

So you want to try shaving your face, eh?

Many women have long touted facial shaving, an at-home, less intense version of dermaplaning. It is the practice of using a razor to shave the peach fuzz and hair off of your face in pursuit of hair removal and smoother, exfoliated skin.

Perhaps you’ve heard that Marilyn Monroe and Elizabeth Taylor were fans of the practice, or that your makeup will go on more smoothly without your peach fuzz. Watch enough YouTube videos and it can all really start to sound appealing, even if you’ve never given a second thought about the hair on your face.

There is no shortage of online resources singing the praises of face shaving. But there are, of course, plenty of questions to be asked about the procedure.

The first fear many women have is that shaved hair will grow back faster, darker or coarser. Dr. Deborah Palmer, who co-founded the Dermatologist’s Association of New York and has her own line of skin care products, told The Huffington Post that “hair will not grow back thicker or faster. Shaving does not change the number of hair follicles in the skin or the rate of hair growth.”

That notion rings true for people across the board. Stephanie Kaulesar of hair removal salon Spruce & Bond once told InStyle that thicker hair is an illusion “caused by the razor cutting your hair off at its thickest point.” Amy McMichael, chair of the Department of Dermatology at Wake Forest Baptist Health, told Scientific American back in 2014 that a lack of “exposure to pollutants, chemicals and the sun” and the shape of stubble can make hairs appear darker and coarser, but are actually unchanged in regrowth. In fact, long term hair removal can end up reducing regrowth due to “repeated trauma.”

As far as methods go, the jury is out on the best one. Many bloggers swear by the Tinkle eyebrow razor, which is used on dry skin in short, swift motions at a 45-degree angle. Palmer said she recommends “electric or battery operated shavers.” Kate Somerville, who famously divulged that many celebrity clients favor the method, uses “her own brand of face wash” and “a Gillette Mach3” once a week, according to the New York Times.

Larkin Clark, a New York City-based lifestyle and beauty writer and editor, told The Huffington Post that after trying two different tools ― first a men’s razor and then the smaller eyebrow razor ― it was a combo of the smaller razor with lathered up shaving cream that she found the most successful, though she wasn’t ever totally sold.

“Overall it wasn’t enough of a change to keep up the regimen for the long-term. It also made my face sensitive to some skincare products, which was especially tricky when I’d need to put treatments on acne-affected areas that couldn’t be shaved while avoiding the freshly shaved areas around them,” she said.

Whatever tool you choose to do the job, it’s what comes before and after that really makes a difference. Celebrity makeup artist Kari Bauce recommends washing first with a cream cleanser, and using some toner as antiseptic immediately after. “Wait at least an hour before applying any foundation, makeup or moisturizer that isn’t specifically formulated for sensitive skin as the area may be prone to irritation immediately after shaving.”

One blogger we came across, Brye Ashley, admits to having sensitive skin. She shared photos of a bad reaction she had after not taking the proper steps after shaving her face.

The most trying aspect of this process appears to be maintenance. Nearly every article about it insists it’s something you have to keep up with once you start, and that people with sensitive skin should be cautious. “I advise patients with active acne to wait until the acne has resolved or improved before they shave. Shaving over active acne lesions can cut or inflame the skin and risk infection,” Palmer said.

If you ask us, the most important thing to consider is for whom you’re shaving your face. A quite frankly insufferable viral video from 2011 features three women, including former Bachelor contestant Michelle Money, and kicks off by saying that women should never, under any circumstance, have hair on their faces.

Money, who does in fact have beautiful skin, has gone on to make quite a few videos in which she shows off her face shaving methods and explains that people who don’t think they need to get rid of their facial hair are “lying to yourself and to your husband and/or boyfriend who is secretly pissed off that you have a mustache.

Eye. Roll.

If you are uncomfortable with your facial hair and you want to do something about it and you don’t have acne or extremely sensitive skin, then sure, yes, shaving your face can be a desirable choice.

Just please, for the love of Gillette, remember that much like anything else in life, that choice is yours and yours alone.

Beyonce Has A Christmas Line. Say 'Boy, Bye' To All Your Money.

There’s a new way to honor Beyoncé this holiday season that doesn’t involve blasting Destiny’s Child’s “8 Days of Christmas” on repeat.

The songstress debuted a Christmas-themed collection in her online store, just in time for the holi-beys.

The line features tops with clever, seasonally relevant twists on Beyonce-isms such as “I sleigh all day” and “I came to sleigh.” There are T-shirts adorned with lemon-filled stockings for $40 and, somewhat less seasonally relevant, a tank top featuring Bey’s face surrounded by flowers for $40.

But gifts this regal can’t be wrapped in just any old holiday themed paper. That’s why Beyonce is offering her very own $16 wrapping paper that features cartoon versions of the queen in that famous yellow dress and one of her iconic hats, too.

Head to Shop.Beyonce.com to see the entire flawless collection.

Free App And Chrome Extension 'DoneGood' Tells You Ethical Places To Shop

$
0
0

Now you can go green while spending some green.

DoneGood, which launched nationally on Nov. 28, is a new Chrome extension and app that helps users find ethical and sustainable places to shop online. Businesses the app favors include those that are green, make high-quality, long-lasting products and support their workers. The companies that work with DoneGood also offer discounts to people who use the app and extension.

To use DoneGood, all you have to do is download it for free. Once installed, shop online like you typically would by searching for a product — like buying baby gear — on Google or Amazon.

If there’s an ethical or sustainable company that makes baby products that are, say, natural or toxin-free, DoneGood will alert you.

And baby, that’s pretty much it.

Cullen Schwarz and Scott Jacobsen, DoneGood’s cofounders, met in 2007 while working in Washington D.C. After becoming friends, they soon discovered they shared a mutual frustration.

We talked about how we wished there was something that made it easy to make sure the money we were spending was supporting the things we believed in. We decided we ought to build that thing."
Scott Jacobsen, cofounder of DoneGood

“Cullen was talking about how hard it was to find a hoodie he knew wasn’t made by a little kid or someone earning a poverty wage,”Jacobsen told The Huffington Post. “I complained that my favorite sandwich shop used plastic containers even for people dining in and didn’t even recycle so I had to stop going there. We talked about how we wished there was something that made it easy to make sure the money we were spending was supporting the things we believed in. We decided we ought to build that thing.”

In 2014, Schwarz and Jacobsen began to develop DoneGood as part of Harvard Innovation Labs’ Venture Incubation Program. While in development, the partners began talking to social enterprises and soon discovered why people had a hard time finding them.

Schwarz explained to HuffPost that these small to midsize companies don’t have the marketing budgets of the global corporate brands and get buried in searches by big-box stores.

“The extension solves that problem for them,” Schwarz told HuffPost.

As a way to rectify this problem, DoneGood shows its results on popular sites such as Google or Amazon when its users are searching for products. DoneGood also screens the companies they suggest by looking to social impact certifications like certified B Corps, fair trade certified and GOTS certified organic. But other factors also come into play. For instance, DoneGood also looks for companies that make high-quality products built to last in order to combat waste.

“Stuff made out of natural material by skilled craftspeople who are paid well is just naturally going to be higher quality than stuff mass produced in a sweatshop,”Jacobsen said.

Though the Chrome extension is a handy tool (which you can download here), the mobile app (which you can download here) takes responsible spending one step further. The app allows users to customize the app so that it searches for companies with values that reflect their own, such as “women-owned,” “cruelty free” and “made in the U.S.A.”

“The greatest tool each one of us has to create change is the dollars we spend,” Schwarz said. “When we support companies that do the right thing, we help them succeed, and the more other companies follow suit. The world gets better — just because we got something we needed to buy anyway.”

Heidi Klum Responds Perfectly To Being Called A 'Cougar'

Haters can hate all they want on Heidi Klum’s relationship with her younger beau, but it won’t change a thing when it comes to her boyfriend of over two years.

The 43-year-old supermodel has been dating art dealer Vito Schnabel, 30, since early 2014 and spoke to Ocean Drive about the media labeling her a “cougar.”

“It’s not about age,” Klum said. “It doesn’t matter what people say. As long as you know when you close your door in your own home, you have an amazing time together. That’s all that really matters.”

We couldn’t have said it better ourselves.

The mother-of-four ― who split in 2012 from singer Seal ― says she’s used to intense scrutiny given her high profile as a model and TV host. Perhaps that’s helped her develop a thicker skin when it comes to criticism of her relationship with Schnabel.

“We have an amazing connection, we have fun together, and we love each other,” Klum said about Schnabel, who is 13 years her junior.

She added that their mutual passion for art is something they enjoy together and called Schnabel an “amazing teacher.”

Other female celebrities have also spoken out about their “cougar” status, including everyone from Madonna to Courteney Cox. The pop queen herself has dubbed men her own age, “undateable.”

As for Klum, she’s unfazed by aging, saying she’s even looking forward to being a good grandma one day.

Natalia Castellar Was Bullied For Her Eyebrows, Then They Launched Her Modeling Career

Our unique features make us beautiful, but it can be hard to see them that way.

As a kid growing up in Virginia, Natalia Castellar was bullied “terribly” for her long, thick eyebrows. The Puerto Rican-born 17-year-old says things got so bad, she almost shaved them down.

“I had a lot of self-esteem issues,” Castellar told HuffPost. “It was very difficult for me to embrace myself.”

Thanks to a supportive family, Castellar gradually learned to love her brows. Then her sister posted shots of her on a photography blog, W reports, and a fan base grew. Castellar recently signed a modeling contract with the influential agency Next Models.

The eyebrows she once saw as a blemish are now her defining feature.

“My eyebrows are a total advantage,” Castellar said. “They aren’t the only thing that make me a great model, but they play a huge role in attracting attention from both fans and potential clients.”

So far, Castellar has modeled for Nars and Mansur Gavriel, with more projects on the way. She says fans are often surprised to learn that her signature brows require so little maintenance

“Many people assume that I have an eyebrow routine that I follow, but I really don’t do anything besides brush them,” she told W Magazine.

Castellar also makes it a point to tell her followers that insecurities are normal; it’s how you think about them that counts.

“We need to realize that just because someone’s beauty is different than our own doesn’t mean we’re not beautiful,” she told HuffPost. “We need to embrace our diversity and celebrate what makes us, us!”

Well said.

Of Course These SJP-Designed Flight Attendant Shoes Are All Sparkle

Forget home, there’s no place like a private jet to Miami. And even though you’ll have to do a lot more than click your heels to get on one, at least now the flight attendants’ shoes look just as sparkly as Dorothy’s.

Sarah Jessica Parker teamed up with Cynthia Rowley to design the bougiest flight attendant uniforms of all time flight attendant uniforms for Blade, a private aircraft carrier that serves destinations such as Miami, New York, The Hamptons, Nantucket and Atlantic City.

Rowley said in a not-so-relatable press release that Blade’s helicopter and sea plane service “literally” changed her life by helping her escape rush-hour traffic to get to Montauk to see her kids. She designed a super chic, suede bell-sleeved dress with a silk necktie.

Parker, who knows a thing or two about finding the perfect shoe for any outfit, lent her design chops to the brand with one very sparkly block heel, adorned with a blue ribbon to match the necktie.

Chances are many of us won’t have an opportunity to see the shoes in action, but you can get a version of them yourself. The shoes are actually part of Parker’s own collection that you can buy, un-ribboned, for $385.

Hey, Upper East Siders. HuffPost here. And we have the biggest news for you.

Spotted at Art Basel Miami on Monday night: Lonely Boy, aka Penn Badgley. The 30-year-old actor and musician has apparently ditched his signature CW look and is headed in a new style direction ... One Direction, to be more specific.

Badgley and his band Mothxr played a set last night at the Life of the Party event in Bricknell City Centre, but it was his new blond ‘do that got everybody talking.

Taking a page or two from Zayn Malik’s How 2 Be Edgy: A Beginner’s Guide, the “Gossip Girl” star looked almost unrecognizable with bleached blond tips and a face full of scruff.

We’re all in support of a good makeover once and a while, but we’re gonna give this look a Serena van der Would Not for a lack of originality.

Watch the music video for Mothxr’s song “Touch” below:

Vegan footwear brand Keep has joined forces with Beastie Boys’ Adam “Ad-Rock” Horowitz to benefit Planned Parenthood.

They collaborated on “The Ramos Ad-Rock,” a sneaker with a “weather resistant, nylon cordura body” lined with “synthetic fleece and accented with channel quilted, silicon coated nylon.”

It comes with both black and magenta laces and retails for $97. Net proceeds of the shoe will go to Planned Parenthood.

Ad-Rock released a statement saying that he wanted to release the shoe because he supports “small business, women run business, Asian-American run business,” according to Pitchfork.

“I support a woman’s right to choose and feel that women should not be punished for making decisions about their own lives and bodies. If you have similar beliefs, you might wanna grab a pair. Or, if you simply support fresh styles, then you too can be part of what peeps in Keeps are doing,” the statement says.

The team at Keep has previously partnered with other artists like Bon Iver and Animal Collective’s Deakin.

If you’re looking to get more involved and want to help more than Planned Parenthood, here’s a guide to other organizations that provide reproductive healthcare.

Ashley Graham Nabs The Most Coveted, Groundbreaking Cover Of All

$

There are so many reasons we’d like to put 2016 behind us. Ashley Graham  and Vogue aren’t among them.

The high fashion glossy’s British edition chose Graham as its January 2017 cover star. It’s the first time a plus-size model has appeared on the cover of Vogue U.K., according to Fashionista.

Shot by legendary photographer Patrick Demarchelier, Graham looks as natural and gorgeous as ever in an embellished jacket, flowing hair and a refreshingly little amount of makeup.

The move isn’t completely surprising considering British Vogue editor-in-chief Alexandra Shulman’s longstanding feelings against the “ridiculous” size-exclusive nature of the fashion industry. The shift toward a more diverse standard of beauty has so far happened largely in the mainstream, less in high fashion.

Graham and other plus-size models have appeared in various editions of Vogue before, but by putting her on the cover ― a spot so highly coveted by models and celebrities alike ― British Vogue is helping normalize the use of more diverse women that can and should appear in high fashion without warranting a conversation every time. Bravo.

Calling all skin-care devotees ― there’s a rather unconventional beauty trend you might want to add to your facial-care arsenal.

Bee venom, the stuff that makes bee stings so painful, has been used to treat arthritis and nerve pain, but now you can add it to your beauty routine too. According to Refinery29, when it’s added to facial products the venom is claimed to cause “plumping” and “tightening” of the skin.

Whether you’re fed up with breakouts or you’re just looking to try something new, check out the video below to see if bee venom skin care could become your next skincare obsession. (And of course, it’s always best to check with your dermatologist before trying a new skincare product.)
