Author Buys Up $23,500 Worth Of Hatchimals And Parents Are Furious

0

Some people turn to bake sales or GoFundMe accounts to raise money. But for author Sara Gruen, she looked to this season’s must-have children’s toy.

Gruen, who wrote the New York Times best-selling novel “Water for Elephants,” is facing online fury among parents after buying up $23,500 worth of Hatchimal toys only to resell them at higher prices as a so-called fundraiser, Philly Voice reported.

Hatchimals, which are Furby-like birds that pop out of eggs, first hit shelves with a price tag of $49.99 but have since ballooned to more than $200, making it a nightmare for cash-strapped parents to get their hands on for the holidays.

Gruen insists her price hike on the more than 150 toys is not for personal gain and that any profit made will go towards the $150,000 she has spent towards trying to free a man behind bars. She didn’t identify the man but told Philly Voice that he will be the focus of a “Making A Murderer”-type documentary series she’s working on.

In a Facebook post announcing her toys’ sale, Gruen wrote that the moment she first heard about Hatchimals she saw the next Cabbage Patch Kids doll. In the days following Black Friday she went to work buying them up, despite the toys already selling for well over their original market value.

“I figured I could still sell them at a profit and put a dent in the extremely hefty lawyer fees I’m accruing in my fight to get the wrongfully convicted man’s case back before the Supreme Court. So far, so good, right?” she wrote.

She said her cloaked fundraiser hit trouble, however, when she tried to resell the toys on eBay, only to learn that the website limits individuals’ Hatchimal sales to three per week. Other websites like Amazon and Bonanza had similar regulations.

Fearing “financial ruin,” as she called it, she turned to a Facebook plea for Hatchimal-hunters to visit her Shopify site where they’re listed for $189 each.

“I have a fortune invested, only one venue to offload them, and in only three weeks they will magically transform into useless pumpkins that will take up space in my office FOREVER, and have caused my financial ruin,” she wrote in her Facebook plea.

It’s not clear exactly how many she purchased. Her Facebook page states 166 though the Philly Voice reported 156. Based on those numbers, if she sells all of them, she should pull in approximately $29,000 or $31,000, respectively. After subtracting the amount she paid per toy (not including taxes if it’s not already included), her estimated profit would be around $6,000 or $7,000.

Though many people appear to have reached out to her to snag one of the furry creatures ― some of the toys on her Shopify site are listed as “sold out” ― others have expressed anger while accusing her of “exploiting families” and “preying off desperation” before the holidays.

A request for comment from Gruen Thursday was not immediately returned.

Duchess Kate Is Holiday Magic In One Of Diana's Most-Worn Tiaras

Oh, there’s no place like Buckingham Palace for the holidays.

Queen Elizabeth II, the Duke of Edinburgh, the Duchess of Cornwall, the Prince of Wales, Prince William and the Duchess of Cambridge posed together Thursday during an annual diplomatic reception, looking majestic and regal as usual.

Some royal enthusiasts expressed excitement that a photo from inside the event, which is typically kept private, was made available to those of us on the outside. If you ask us, though, the exciting part is that the former Kate Middleton wore both a repeat red gown and one of Princess Diana’s most-worn tiaras.

Kate previously wore the Jenny Packham gown for a state dinner last October, and last wore the Cambridge Lover’s Knot tiara to the 2015 edition of the same annual diplomatic reception she’s attending tonight.

The tiara was originally commissioned by Queen Mary, then passed down to her granddaughter, the current queen, who loaned the tiara to Diana out of her own private collection. Diana famously wore it many times, including to a banquet in New Zealand in 1983.

Images from Kate’s arrival provide an even closer look at the magnificent pearl and diamond head piece in all its royal glory.

It’s not too late to make those holiday wish lists, people. Just saying.

We’re always game for gadgets that make travel easier ― especially those that allow us to bring our entire wardrobe along.

Behold the ShelfPack. This expandable suitcase turns into a shelving unit that can hold a crazy amount of clothes:

The ShelfPack debuted last year, but its capacity for closet cargo will remain timeless for generations of over-packers to come.

At 26x18x14 inches, the ShelfPack exceeds the carry-on size limits for major airlines. You should also know it weighs 14.5 pounds when empty, which is more than eight pounds heavier than a comparably sized suitcase from Samsonite.

Travelers who’ve used the ShelfPack say it can be tough to lug around, but it holds a staggering number of clothes. Some recommend storing dirty clothes in the empty space beneath the shelves.

Up to the challenge? The ShelfPack retails for $349 online, with free shipping anywhere in the U.S. See more of it in action below:

A Beautifully Diverse Group Of Women Put On Their Own VS Fashion Show

0

The typical reaction to watching the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show isn’t wanting to strip down to a bra and underwear and walk a runway. But a wonderfully diverse group of women did just that, in the most inspiring way.

BuzzFeed produced its very own recreation of the highly anticipated annual event, featuring women of all different shapes and sizes. Among them is plus-size model Tess Holliday, who garnered attention last year when she criticized Victoria’s Secret for “perpetuating the image... that you have to look like  a certain way, like a Victoria’s Secret Angel, to feel beautiful and be sexy.”

BuzzFeed’s goal was to demonstrate “the beauty of the everyday woman,” but you’ll notice something else when you watch it, too.

The women involved and their experiences are so relatable, it’d be difficult not to recognize a thought that’s crossed your own mind at least once as you hear them discuss their feelings about participating in the event.

“There are days where I’m feeling myself, and then there are days where I just don’t want to exist in the body I live in,” says one model, while another admits she’s “had a very up and down relationship with body image over the years.”

Seeing these women push through those insecurities ― and look totally gorgeous and badass in the process ― is enough to make anyone want to throw on a fancy lingerie set and take the town.

This video has self-love bursting at the seams, but is perfectly summed up in the first few seconds, when one the models explains she’ll walk the runway in her underwear because “Why the fuck not?”

Indeed.

This Edible Chocolate Manicure Is Too Much

Chocolate is great. Nail art is great. Eating is great. Edible chocolate nail art is... not so great.

New Zealand-based nail technician and YouTuber Jessie, who goes by NaileditNZ, recently decided to do something a “wee bit crazy.” In lieu of her typically impressive and very real nail art designs, she posted a parody tutorial for edible chocolate nails.

Using writing icing in dark chocolate, caramel chocolate and white chocolate,as well as silver chocolate balls that are “way too big for the nail,” Jessie actually succeeds in adorning her nails with edible chocolate.

If it’s not the fact that icing belongs on cupcakes that prevents you from trying out this bizarre look, perhaps her drying tactic ― sticking her hand in the freezer to no avail ― will.

Jessie ends up doing exactly what we would do in this situation: eating the icing right off of her fingers, which she says is actually “really nice.”

Anyone else have a sudden hankering for chocolate? Check out the entire video above.

Trying to stay organized while traveling can certainly present its challenges, especially when trying to protect your most delicate undergarments. But with lingerie bags, you can easily separate your undies from your outerwear.

This particular bag also offers a way to keep your clean and dirty lingerie apart. Dirty lingerie goes into a detachable mesh bag for a simple transition to the washer.

To see how these lingerie bags work, check out the video below.

Obamas Send Out Their Last Christmas Card From The White House

The Obamas have officially sent out their final holiday card from the White House, and it is a gem.

The card features a photograph of President Barack Obama, first lady Michelle Obama, and their daughters, Malia, 18, and Sasha, 15. The photo was originally taken at a March state dinner honoring Canada’s prime minister, Justin Trudeau. Cards were sent to friends, supporters and members of the media.

Each Obama lady looks positively gorgeous. FLOTUS is wearing a blue jacquard gown by Jason Wu while Malia and Sasha are in custom embroidered Naeem Khan dresses.

The card was signed by the entire Obama family, including dogs Sunny and Bo, and has received a LOT of praise on social media.

If only they could have four more years ...

Lane Bryant's Unretouched Ad Celebrates Women, Stretch Marks And All

0

Lane Bryant typically garners attention for the statements it makes with its campaigns. Now, it’s going viral for not saying anything at all.

Denise Bidot, plus-size model and founder of the “There Is No Wrong Way To Be A Woman” movement, is the subject of a photo Lane Bryant posted to its Instagram account on Thursday.

Clad in a two-piece bathing suit and a cover up, you might not even notice that the image hasn’t been retouched, or that Bidot’s stretch marks are fully visible in the shot.

The brand makes no mention of the stretch marks, instead focusing on what’s really important, that “It’s December. It’s Wednesday. We all need a break.” In an e-mail to The Huffington Post, CMO and EVP of marketing Brian Beitler explained that the idea behind the image is pretty simple.

“We at Lane Bryant simply believe that all women should be seen and celebrated as they are. Society and the media continuously project an unrealistic and frankly out-dated beauty and body standard,” he said.

Bidot later posted the photo to her own Instagram, praising it for “how real it is” and thanking the brand for loving her body, “stretch marks and all.”

The model, who has also starred in campaign images for Old Navy and Nordstrom, is joined by the likes of Danielle Brooks, Ashley Graham and Gabourey Sidibe in working with the brand. Beitler told The Huffington Post that these women “are breaking boundaries with their confidence and talent” and “will continue to promote body-inclusion in fashion and media.”

We’ll be waiting with open arms for the next one.

The Holidays Are The Perfect Time To Take Some Style Risks

0
0

If I had a dollar for every time a friend uttered the words “I can’t pull that off,” I’d be jet-setting around the world in a private jet instead of sitting here writing this story.

OK, not quite, but the debilitating mindset that stops us from reaching our true sartorial potential is rampant, especially when the holidays come around. I get it, there’s nothing quite as intimidating as a sequined blazer, but when it comes to wearing something out of your comfort zone, the secret to achieving greatness is basically ... putting said thing on.

Still not totally convinced? I thought you might say that. That’s why I’ve gone ahead and done your holiday party homework for you. From just the tiniest touch of sparkle to full-on party pants, here are some fool-proof, totally wearable options for any of your seasonal commitments this month.

1. Throw On Some Sparkle

I personally am of the camp that when it comes to sparkle, the tackier, the better. But for those of you who aren’t quite as sold on sparkle, there are in fact subtle ways to commit to some shine in your wardrobe. Why not go with black sequined trousers and a white T-shirt? Or perhaps a sneakily sparkly Eloquii jumpsuit? Or maybe an LC Lauren Conrad blazer that can be taken off if the glitz of it all starts to overwhelm you. Of course, you could always pair some Baublebar sparklers or shiny rose gold Kate Spade Keds with a regular outfit and call it a day.

sequins

2. Winterize The Slip Dress

The slip dress is another piece that can feel totally festive and totally intimidating, with its silky, slinky material and general lack of coverage. Picture this printed Free People number over a fitted J. Crew turtleneck and a chunky Steve Madden heel. It pretty much screams party time. If a high neck isn’t your bag, this look can feel just as festive with a black Topshop slip dress, a white T-shirt (I love this one from Aritzia) underneath and some necklaces layered on top paired with, perhaps, this leopard print faux fur coat from H&M?

slip

3. Pile On The Velvet

There are also plenty of opportunities to rock velvet without looking like a vintage couch or a Prince impersonator (my personal aesthetic). Take these Who What Wear for Target paisley booties. At just $44.99, it quite frankly doesn’t matter what you wear with them, it’s an automatic party.

velvet

AnAsos Curve bodysuit would look pretty amazing tucked into a pair of super comfortable NYDJ ripped black jeans. An epic crinkle blazer from Topshop is a surefire conversation starter over a pair of skinny black pants and a lacy camisole. If color is too much for you, perhaps a dream blazer-dress combo from Missguided is more your style?

There you have it, folks. A festive run down of looks that you not only can pull off, but should. Tweet us at @huffpostlifestyle and show us your best holiday outfits!

Husband Turns Spare Closet Into A Beautiful Vanity For His Nurse Wife

0

Christmas came early this year for wife and mom of three Kari Koelsch.

After casually mentioning to her husband Todd that she wished she had her own space to get ready in, he decided to convert a spare closet in their Tiffin, Ohio home into a vanity where she could do her makeup. And it’s all kinds of gorgeous:

“I was talking about how we are always rushed when we are getting ready to go somewhere,” Kari told The Huffington Post. “We are very busy and I mentioned it would be nice if I had my own place to get ready. That way none of my things would be in his way.”

The couple, who tied the knot in July 2015, have number of other home improvements they are hoping to tackle. But Todd prioritized the vanity project so it would be complete in time for the holidays and Kari’s birthday, which is also in December.

“My husband always puts me first, which is nice,” she said. “As a nurse, I don’t often get the luxury of putting myself first. So it’s so sweet that my husband does.”

Todd told his wife not to look in the closet until he was finished, but ultimately Kari couldn’t stop herself from sneaking a peek at his progress.

“I was completely shocked when I saw it,” she told HuffPost. “I could not have asked for anything more beautiful and perfect for me.”

On Sunday, Kari’s sister Molly Maksemetz tweeted a before-and-after photo of the vanity closet. The sweet gesture clearly captured the Internet’s heart: the photos were retweeted more than 66,000 times.

According to Kari, Todd is planning to complete the project this weekend. He still needs to add additional lights around the mirror, install another drawer and finish the seat.

“I took those pictures when it wasn’t even done yet,” she said, referring to the images above. “I couldn’t wait! I was so excited.”

Kari told HuffPost that she is a fan of the color pink, sparkles and “anything girly.” So the decor, from the pink and white walls to the gold accents to the crystal light fixture, perfectly suits her taste.

“I’m almost shocked that Todd came up with such a feminine design,” she said. “He is a utility worker that’s usually covered in mud. He’s a big tough guy that wears work boots every day. I’m definitely surprised he thought of pink stripes.”

And while some couples may choose to buy pricey gifts for one another, Kari said it means so much more that her husband makes her presents instead.

“When I look at my vanity I think of all the time he spent designing it and how much love he put into it,” she said. “He told me he didn’t spend very much money on it and most of the things he put in it were on sale. But when I look at it, all I can think of is how priceless it is to me. Money can’t buy the things I have.”

GBK, the special events company behind many high-profile Gifting Lounges during the Oscars, Golden Globes and Emmys among others, recently got in to the holiday season by holding its inaugural Giving Lounge.

GBK teamed with charity auction company Bidding for Good and event location OUE Skyspace LA to create a twist on the traditional gifting model. This time, celebrities collected gifts not for themselves, but for the charity of their choice.

Celebs such as Naomi Grossman (American Horror Story), Madison McLaughlin (Arrow), Meghan Ory (Once Upon a Time), Drake Bell (Drake & Josh), Heather Tom (The Bold and the Beautiful), Renne Olstead (The Secret Life of the American Teenager) and Akbar Gbaja-Biamila (American Ninja Warrior) picked up numerous luxury items estimated collectively to be worth over $8000, which will be donated to their favorite charity in time for the holiday season.

These included handmade leather hats from American Hat Makers and soy candles from Katya's Candles, which come with a surprise sterling silver or Swarovski crystal ring in side.

Shoe company Guilty soles handed out the most stylish of shoes - block heeled booties, slip-on sneaker, lace-up heels and more. Tuft & Needle gifted adaptive foam-based mattresses with support layers that react based on pressure. The gel and graphite inside the mattress make it heat wicking and breathable.

Pool time got more fun at the event as Swimline and Solstice Watersports gave out inflatable lounge chairs and novelty floats in such shapes as pretzels and sugar skulls. Tempt Brands gifted Street Affaires sunglasses for men and women.

Food and spa brands also got in on the charity action, including sandwich maker Ike's Place, Polkadot Cupcake and mobile spa Manly Hands, which specializes in reflexology treatments of hands, feet, shoulders, neck and arms.

The reality TV star attended the real Christina Aguilera’s birthday bash over the weekend decked out as the “Dirrty” singer (circa 2002) in a blonde wig with black streaks, a bikini top and, of course, a pair of assless chaps. You may recall the lip kit mogul wore a similar ensemble for Halloween this year, earning praise from the pop star

How To Do Boho Without Looking Like A Coachella Victim

0
0

By: Connie Wang

There’s a reason that boho style has been a fashion trend since way before Coachella became a summer institution. It projects a carefree and nostalgic worldview, where old things, honest experiences, and organic truths are most important... or at least, that’s what it’s supposed to do, anyway. The mall’s version of “boho” has strayed a bit from that, and anyone who’s ever flipped through a rack of $19.99 imitation-suede fringe vests that smell like nail polish with not-so-traditional seed-beading trim knows what I’m talking about.

Those who do boho in the less commercial way, though, aren’t so much into mass-produced slouchy ankle boots and crocheted dresses. Just ask model Yuka Mannami, who in the past few months alone has covered i-D and Vogue Japan, and has fronted campaigns for Givenchy and Bottega Veneta. Her style is very much carefree and nostalgic — and mostly comes from thrift shops. But, Yuka doesn’t consider herself boho: “I think [boho] is very ‘American’ and mainstream...I’m more Victorian and Edwardian. More vintage, if that’s considered a style!” But when you consider her closet that’s full of brown velvet, long-length floral dresses, cracked-leather shoes, and floaty blouses, there’s enough evidence to make the claim that Mannami does the anti-Coachella version of boho. We break down what that means at Mannami’s favorite NYC vintage store, Edith Machinist, below:

Special thanks to Edith Machinist.

When you’re buying vintage, what’s your weakness? “I can’t say no to a vintage dress. I do a lot of searching on eBay for them. Anything Victorian or Edwardian... any style that reminds me of a painting.”

These kinds of boho printed dresses are everywhere in thrift stores. How do you like to wear them? "They are always so casual and comfortable so just by themselves is great. But I try to pair with loafers to make it look less girly and more cool. Also, I know how to sew, so I sometimes take in the waist a little. Otherwise, a belt can do a lot."

This outfit is kind of your signature, right? "Long maxi-dresses and choker necklaces are my thing. I could wear a different combination every day and not get tired! Also, I love brown — I know it's kind of an unpopular color to love, but I can't help myself."

Tell us about your necklace! "I got it in Paris! I love it so much because of that huge gem stone in it. It's almost like a good luck charm."

These kinds of modest-looking dresses in thrift stores can feel intimidating. How do you dress it up to look cool? "Mix them with unique items like metallic and lace pieces. Especially if something feels 'luxury' or like a designer piece. That pair-up usually makes both items look even cooler."

What's the secret to wearing brown well? "I think brown goes well with every color! Red, blue, green... mmI always try to mix brown with more vibrant colors, but sometimes, brown on brown can look great, too."

Do you think you're drawn to clothes that other people would normally pass over? "Yes, because most people think they look 'weird' and then turn away, but I like the challenge!"

Tell me about that top! What do you like about it? "I don't usually wear a lot of color, but something about the combination of colors here was so cool to me. They work so well together!"

What's the secret to mixing prints? "I try to keep all the prints in the same color family."

Where would we be without viral tweets? If it weren't for these messages on Twitter, we'd go through life thinking we were alone in our Sephora addictions. We'd be left wondering whether our highlight is too poppin’ (spoiler alert: it’s not). And, of course, we'd never get to laugh over all those Kermit makeup memes that see straight into our souls.

Thankfully, these tweets do exist. And 2016 has supplied us with some of the best, most hilarious tweets that any beauty lover would appreciate. So in the spirit of sharing, we decided to compile a list of some of our favorites so that you can re-live the platform’s funniest moments. But all of them are damn good.

The Popular DIY Beauty Hack You Might Want To Avoid

0
0

By: Rachel Krause

DIY beauty hacks: When they’re good, they’re good, and when they’re bad, they’re really, really bad — and potentially hazardous to your health.

The internet went wild recently when makeup artist Zohra (a.k.a. zobeautyy) shared a video tutorial showing how to make your own custom liquid lipstick using products you already own, and understandably so — combine two of Instagram’s favorite beauty trends (DIY and liquid lipstick), and you’ve got a social media hit on your hands.

The how-to, which has racked up almost 2 million views so far, shows Zohra cutting a bullet of lipstick out of its tube, smashing it, and then blending it with a generous amount of liquid face primer. She then puts the mixture in a syringe and squeezes it into an empty tube with a doe-foot applicator — you know, just like a liquid lipstick. The perfect way to repurpose your neglected lipstick collection, right?

Eh, maybe not so much. As cosmetic chemist Ginger King told Allure, “You need to be very careful for [DIY] lip products, as the product applied can be ingested.”

Dermatologist Joshua Zeichner, MD, adds that while lip products are specifically formulated to be safe even if a little bit happens to get in your mouth (still not recommended), the same doesn’t always apply to other face makeup. Still, Dr. Zeichner says, “If a facial primer is applied to the outer part of the lip, it is likely safe to apply around the mouth. Just try not to put it on the inner, wet side of the lip.”

So if you absolutely must try it, Zohra’s trick probably won’t hurt you — but investing in a liquid lipstick you can find at Sephora is still your best bet.

Guests arrived for the festivities in what Bellisario dubbed a “bus full of love” that looks like it drove right off the Pinterest wedding board of a Wes Anderson fan.

Bellisario, who plays Spencer on “PLL,” looked absolutely stunning in her gown, which she accessorized with a gold halo-like crown. At one point, the actress changed into a glittering gold dress, which was equally gorgeous.

Guests included Bellisario’s “PLL” cast-mates Keegan Allen, Lucy Hale, Ashley Benson, Sasha Pieterse and Ian Harding, as well as the show’s creator I. Marlene King. Fellow “PLL” star Shay Mitchell was not in attendance, but she made sure to send her friend and co-star some love on Instagram.

“To my big sister T on her wedding day,” she wrote. “I love that we were able to close one very important chapter of our lives together and I am devastated not to be there as you embark on your next one. ... I know you and Patrick will have the most special day and I can’t wait to celebrate you two as a married couple. Soak it all in and enjoy this moment...it’s all yours babe.”

Lingerie-Clad Kim Kardashian Stares Into Our Souls In Dreamy Love Advent Video

Love magazine is here to gift us with a much-anticipated Kim Kardashian appearance, just in time for Christmas.

The 36-year-old stars in the fashion magazine’s latest advent calendar video, counting down to Dec. 25, sporting some lacy lingerie and a giant fur coat. The video, directed by James Lima, sees Kardashian maintaining some serious eye contact with the camera, almost as if she’s staring into our souls. All the while, the northern lights glow in the sky behind her, giving the video an ethereal vibe.

And just to make sure we all remember this video is for the holidays, the words “Peace on Earth” flash on the screen at the end.

The video marks one of the first times we’ve seen Kardashian glammed up since she was robbed at gunpoint in Paris in October. It should be noted, however, the video was likely filmed before the reality star’s terrifying ordeal took place, so don’t go expecting to see her back on Instagram just yet.

The mother of two has kept a low profile since the robbery. She’s continued to stay out of the public eye, save for a few sightings, especially after her husband, Kanye West, was hospitalized in Los Angeles last month.

Our Top 3 Favorite Looks At The Critics' Choice Awards

Ready or not, here comes awards season.

While you sat on the couch in pajamas fighting off the Sunday scaries (just us?), a slew of well-dressed celebs took the blue carpet by storm at the Critics’ Choice Awards in Santa Monica.

Following in last year’s stylish footsteps, attendees looked more fashionable than ever, notching win after win before even stepping inside the venue. Picking favorites was a daunting task, but there were three dresses in particular that really tugged our red carpet-loving heartstrings.

Behold, our three, hands-down favorite looks of the evening:

Jessica Biel in Elie Saab

Any Jessica Biel/Justin Timberlake sighting is a treat, but Biel stole the show with her Elie Saab gown. The flowing, low-cut, long-sleeve dress, which was cinched with a belted waist and paired with perfectly tousled locks, is a home run.

Nicole Kidman in Brandon Maxwell

There’s a reason Brandon Maxwell is beloved by both Lady Gaga and Michelle Obama: His edgy yet elegant designs have best dressed written all over them. Kidman totally knocked it out of the park in this off-the-shoulder cut-out gown that had just the right amount of slit.

Viola Davis in Michael Kors

Can Viola Davis do no wrong? She cannot, and this custom Michael Kors look is further proof. Not only is that shade of turquoise flawless against her skin, but the fit ― a sleeker cut than we’re used to seeing her wear ― is that of a glove. This is perfection.

Check out more great looks from the blue carpet below.

Photographer Captures The Beauty Of The Burkini, Without A Political Agenda

When Melina Papageorgiou began photographing women wearing burkinis in 2015, the resounding response from her peers was: “Burkini? What’s that?”

One year later, the women’s bathing garment ― a lightweight two-piece that provides full body coverage for Muslim women seeking modest dress conducive to swimming or playing sports ― became a polarizing subject of political debate

The burkini dominated news headlines in August of 2016. Following an ISIS-affiliated attack that took 84 French lives on Bastille Day, 15 French cities instituted a “burkini ban,” claiming the suit “overtly manifests adherence to a religion at a time when France and places of worship are the target of terrorist attacks.

In her series, “Burkini,” Berlin-based photographer Papageorgiou strips the swimsuit of its controversy, framing the article of clothing instead as a visually appealing object categorized by sun-soaked colors and abstract, billowing patterns. Papageorgiou leaves most charged political associations related to the burkini behind, focusing instead on its normalcy ― they’re just bathing suits, after all.

Many critics across the world regard the burkini ban itself as a strategy of oppression, one founded in fear and ignorance, denying women of faith the right to make their own decisions regarding their clothing, their bodies, and their religion. In an interview with The Guardian, Aheda Zanetti, who created the burkini, expressed her sadness at the controversy surrounding it.

I think they have misunderstood a garment that is so positive,” Zanetti said. “It symbolizes leisure and happiness and fun and fitness and health and now they are demanding women get off the beach and back into their kitchens? This has given women freedom, and they want to take that freedom away? I don’t think any man should worry about how women are dressing — no one is forcing us, it’s a woman’s choice. What you see is our choice.”

Countering the allegations from people like Thierry Migoule, head of municipal services in Cannes, France, who described the burkini as “ostentatious clothing which refers to an allegiance to terrorist movements,” Papageorgiou presents the summery garments as simply what they are ― stylish and convenient items of clothing.

“To me, it is important to leave some of these questions open,” Papageorgiou explained to The Huffington Post, “to leave a space for perceiving things, to not automatically judge and point at things and take a defined stance.”

The series “Burkini” focuses not just on the swimsuits themselves, but the environment in which Papageorgiou encountered them ― the sun-bleached beaches of Abu Dhabi. The artist, whose parents currently live in the United Arab Emirates capital, was fascinated by the city’s mix of natural and manufactured offerings, as well as the strong grip bathing culture had over its inhabitants.

“I was intrigued by the atmosphere there,” Papageorgiou expressed. “There is a constant buzz, a peculiar soundscape, made up of traffic noises and construction sites, that persists all the time, not even stopping at night. This creates a sense of artificiality, at least to me, that clashes with the strong presence of nature, given by the heat and the glaring sunshine.”

Papageorgiou, well aware of the political implications of her subject matter, shifts from this familiar perspective. Instead, the artist uses her status as an outsider to capture the burkini as an optically enchanting configuration of fabric, just one particularly appealing aspect of Abu Dhabi culture.

The hypnotic images, whether depicting a woman in her burkini or a string of palm trees, feel like summer. In the intensity of the heat, bias drips away like so many beads of sweat, the resulting images simply focusing on the strange and banal beauty of various spaces and things.

It was very important for me to take the images really close,” she explained in an interview with Broadly, “because one thing I wanted understood was that so ... well, the burkini is, in a way, just a fabric. A car is just a car. It was important to photograph them really close ― visually really close ― just to observe it as it is.”

Through her photos, Papageorgiou refuses to give in to the binary thinking that often takes hold, finally allowing the swimsuits to have their own day off at the beach.

Papageorgiou’s photographs are slated to appear in a photo book and exhibition in 2017.
