Self-Love Blogger Uses Tights To Show Body 'Transformation'

$

If you’re comparing yourself to what you scroll past on Instagram, then 23-year-old Milly Smith wants to open your eyes.

The U.K.-based nursing student, new mom and body positivity champion recently posted an Instagram (@selfloveclubb) of two drastically different side-by-side photos, taken seconds apart.

In the first, Smith is wearing control-top tights that give her the appearance of a flat stomach and hourglass shape. In the second photo, the tights are pulled below her stomach and the entire shape of her figure is changed.

Smith writes in the caption, “Same girl, same day, same time. Not a before and after. Not a weight loss transformation. Not a diet company promotion.”

She elaborates that she’s comfortable with how her body looks in both images and stresses to her fans that they shouldn’t compare themselves to other people.

“Just live for you. There is no one on this planet who’s like you and that’s pretty damn amazing don’t ya think. The world doesn’t need another copy, it needs you. We are worthy, valid and powerful beyond measure,” she says.

The side-by-side comparison has been done many times before, but this iteration shows just how deceptive angles and clothing can be to a silhouette.

Smith frequently posts photos advocating body acceptance, including other side-by-sides to make a point that she (or the others she’s photographed) hasn’t lost weight between one photo and the other. It’s simply photo “magic.”

Just a same girl, same day, different pose reminder that our bodies look different in different angles and that it's perfectly ok, normal and natural. You don't need to look like anybody else but YOU ❤ I get asked a lot recently how to start a Bopo insta page as they want confidence. I often come up with nothing because I'm not entirely sure I understand. Are they asking me how to get started on a journey to self love or just how to start an insta page to get justification that their body is worthy in hope it will bring them self love? Before I put my photos and words out onto Instagram I started my journey to self love with myself; I mean it's still a very personal journey but I want to share it now and help others too. I took photos and wrote down love notes to my body without showing them to a soul- it was just for my soul and my mind. Starting an insta page could help you on your journey of course but your motives are what's important- know what they are before starting is my advice. Maybe do it off social media first and get a feel for your journey and what works/doesn't work for you and do it for YOU. Do it for your soul. Your follower count doesn't matter or make you more or less worthy. 10,000 people telling you your pretty wont bring about self love either. It's so much more than that and it starts deep inside yourself not with your aesthetics. Bopo isn't a 'trend'. It's not about how many you can impress, you need to be impressing yourself. Make yourself proud.

Kerry Washington's Style Evolution Is Full Of Red Carpet Risks

Kerry Washington is a style icon, though she claims it wasn’t always the case. She wears fresh-off-the-runway looks with ease, completely blows everyone else’s maternity style out of the water, and then does it again and again.

The “Scandal” star uses her fashion in other ways, too. She’s spread awareness of financial abuse through purse design, co-designed a clothing line based on her hit television show and, as proven as recently as the 2017 SAG Awards, uses her platform to make political statements about troubling new policies.

A look back at the way Washington’s style has evolved since those beloved “Save the Last Dance” days shows she’s always had a flair for fashion, if not quite as high fashion as she wears today. Her gowns have gotten a chic upgrade, but the boldness and willingness to have fun through fashion is definitely unchanged.

In honor of Washington’s 40th birthday, we revisit those earlier days, and celebrate some of our favorite recent moments, too.

I Tried 'Dry January' And It Was Harder And Better Than I Expected

In our monthly series, GIVING UP, newsroom staffers deprive themselves of a beloved habit and track how it went. In January, Senior Editor Maxwell Strachan, 29, gave up alcohol.

What are you giving up? I tried to give up alcohol for the month of January as part of that whole “Dry January” phenomenon. I failed.

What made you decide to give it up? As 2016 was winding down, I figured I could use an extended period of sobriety. November and December had left me feeling tired and financially irresponsible ― something I attributed in part to an uptick in alcohol consumption related to the holiday season and general, chaotic state of the world.

In prior years I have been able to fight through the post-holiday hangover, but as I get older, the hangovers are just worse. So I decided to start off the year without drinking to try and re-energize myself and maybe lose a couple pounds, too.

How did your friends and family react? People were mostly either intrigued or supportive. One of my friends said, “I’m so sorry,” which I still don’t know how to interpret. Others joked that perhaps it wasn’t the best time to stop drinking, considering the political environment we find ourselves in.

My best friend was probably the most upset by it. He literally scoffed after I told him I was serious about the whole thing. But that makes sense, given that it threw a small wrench in his social life.

I will say, I don’t think I could have done it had my girlfriend not been so onboard with the idea. In New York, where I live, meeting up at bars is a primary way of seeing friends, and having her around made it much easier to fight off that urge and opt for exercising, cooking food and watching movies.

Did you do any research before you started? I read some blog posts about how you can lose some weight not drinking. Which, duh. And of course, I know alcohol is a depressant and that everyone who doesn’t drink feels amazing. Look, we all know alcohol is bad, right? That’s not exactly a revelation.

Did you slip up? Yes, I did. The weekends are just tough in New York, which has a heavy drinking culture. I survived the first weekend, but it required purchasing $17 worth of Diet Coke at bars on the Lower East Side on Friday, and then inviting over friends on Saturday for dinner at my apartment, where I proceeded to drink two liters of Diet Coke and lay wide-eyed in bed until around 4 a.m. Since then, I have sworn off Diet Coke, which should be illegal.

The next weekend, one of my good friends was having an engagement party complete with an open bar. He also was attempting “Dry January” and together we decided we would break it for “just one night:”  Friday, Jan. 13. Then, giant pile of crap that I am, I decided to break it the next night, too. After that, I basically decided that I would continue to not drink Sunday to Thursday, but still drink on Friday and Saturday, which is not nothing, right? Right? Yes, I feel bad.

When did you first feel deprived? I normally enjoy having a couple beers at home after work during the week, but I found that habit was relatively easy to break if I just focused on making a nice meal and drinking tea. For a couple days, I had a strong desire for red wine, which is odd mostly because I don’t really drink red wine. But mostly, I found not drinking during the week to be great. I exercised more often, ate better and got more sleep.

But certainly, it’s hard not to drink around your friends on the weekends in New York. I felt out of sorts then, and I don’t really know if there is a fix to that. Also, and I cannot state this strongly enough: The price New York bars charge for Diet Coke is a crime.

Any awkward social encounters? Not really. But I spent much more time at home than I usually do, so over time I felt I had a lack of social encounters. I have only seen my friends during the weekends, really, which kind of sucks.

Notice any changes to your mood? Yes, my mood noticeably improved when I went a prolonged period without drinking. I felt more calm and even-keeled. However, it’s possible that change in mood was not simply a result of abstaining from alcohol, but part of a larger domino effect: To avoid drinking, I exercised more, which in turn made me tired, which in turn meant I went to bed earlier.

I also cooked at home more often and opted against fried foods for the most part, and I’m sure that contributed some, too. I think not drinking was the first domino to fall, which helped everything else fall in place.

For better or worse, it also made me realize the extent to which drinking made me feel lazy after I imbibed on the weekends. I had trouble doing much the day after going out with friends besides making breakfast and watching television, and I think I’ll have a hard time forgetting all that come February.

Changes to your body? Yes, I lost about eight pounds, although I will emphasize once again, that’s not due entirely to less drinking. I also exercised for an hour about three times a week and noticeably improved my diet to get the most bang for my sober buck.

Also, for the first couple days, I had a harder time going to sleep even though I was more tired. The sleep I did get was noticeably deeper-seeming. But over time, going to sleep became less of a challenge.

Changes to your productivity? This was probably the biggest revelation I had: After you have your first drink of the day, whether it’s at 6 p.m. or 9 p.m., it’s pretty hard to get anything else productive done before bed. Not drinking in the evenings gave me much more time to exercise, read, cook and catch up on extra work.

Changes to your relationships? I can’t say it really improved my relationships. Luckily, I’m not mean when I drink. If anything, I’m pretty sure my friends are actually tired of hearing me talking about “Dry-ish January.”

I did see people less during the week, and I think that’s actually a net negative of the whole thing.

Also, I guess it’s possible I started to become a bit more boring. My conversations of choice shifted toward telling friends about other small changes I had made to my life to improve my happiness, like drinking more half-caf and decaf coffee. They didn’t always appreciate that:

So, yeah.

Would you do it again? Yes, and to be honest, I think I’m going to change my behavior going forward a bit. I’d like to avoid drinking at home for the most part during the week, and I’d like to try only going out to bars to see people I really want to see, rather than just because I want to let off some steam. While not drinking, I saved some money and was able to order nice meat at the store more often. And who doesn’t like nice meat?

Prince Charles Warns That The Lessons Of WWII Risk Being Forgotten

$

The “horrific lessons” from World War II appear to be in increasing danger of being forgotten, Britain’s Prince Charles told a Jewish fundraiser on Monday.

The Prince of Wales issued the warning at a World Jewish Relief dinner where one religious leader slammed President Donald Trump’s immigration and refugee ban as “totally unacceptable.”

“In my own life, I have always tried to reach across the boundaries of faith and community; to extend a helping hand wherever one might be needed,” Charles said. “The determination of World Jewish Relief to help those in need, regardless of their faith, is one reason why I have long been drawn to it.”

The evening included a speech by Chief Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis, of the United Hebrew Congregations of the Commonwealth, who went so far as to pointedly condemned Trump’s actions.

“President Trump appears to have signed an executive order which seems to discriminate against individuals based totally on their religion or their nationality,” he told the audience, according to The Telegraph. “We as Jews perhaps more than any others know exactly what it is like to be the victims of such discrimination and it is totally unacceptable.”

Charles’ message came amid ongoing criticism over British Prime Minister Theresa May’s invitation for Trump to travel to the U.K. on an official state visit, despite global outcry over his recent actions.

More than 1.7 million Britons have signed a petition calling for Trump’s planned visit to be canceled, citing potential “embarrassment to Her Majesty the Queen.”

“Donald Trump’s well documented misogyny and vulgarity disqualifies him from being received by Her Majesty the Queen or the Prince of Wales,” it reads. “Therefore during the term of his presidency Donald Trump should not be invited to the United Kingdom for an official State Visit.”

The British public’s growing adversity to Trump is nothing new. A year ago, nearly 600,000 people signed a petition requesting that Trump, who was a presidential candidate at that time, be barred from entering the United Kingdom.

Anorexia Survivor Proves That Not All ‘Transformations’ Are About Weight Loss

Warning: The content below may be considered triggering to some.

Megan Jayne Crabbe was diagnosed with anorexia when she was just 14 years old. Now, nine years later, she has dedicated herself to promoting body positivity.

“It took me 2 years to claw my way out of anorexia,” the 23-year-old body-positive blogger wrote in an October 2015 post on her website Bodyposipanda. “[Two] years, one institutionalization, one hospitalization, and countless tears from the family members’ hearts I’d broken along the way. I had chased the holy grail of thin with everything I had, traded in every part of me to end up 65 lbs., barely alive, still worried that people would see my stomach fold as I sat in my hospital bed.”

After five years of battling anorexia, Crabbe became a body-positive advocate who uses honest images of herself, posted on her Instagram page and her personal website, to spread body love. Crabbe’s most recent post on Instagram is a side-by-side photo. On one side is a photo of Crabbe two and a half years ago, while she was in the throes of her eating disorder. On the other, you see her as she looks like today.

It’s a powerful “before and after” photo that reminds us what a body-positive transformation truly is.

“On the left is me 2 1/2 years ago, just before I found body positivity, and on the right is me today. You’ll probably notice the most obvious thing I’ve gained between these two pictures: weight,” Crabbe wrote underneath the image. “But there are so many other things I’ve gained as well. I’ve gained mental freedom. I’ve gained self love.”

In only a day, the photo has received more than 75,000 likes and 3,600 comments.

“I know the world wants you to believe that the less you weigh the happier you’ll be. I know I’m supposed to feel ashamed of this transformation,” Crabbe continued. “I’m supposed to vow to lose the weight, I’m supposed to spend my life chasing the body on the left and buying into the idea that I’ll be more valuable once I get there. But I’m not going to do that.”

Crabbe ended her post by asking people to leave behind the search for the “perfect” body: “It’s time we took a stand and refused to keep hurting ourselves in the pursuit of a ‘perfect’ body that doesn’t even exist,” she wrote. “It’s time for us to [realize] that we’re already good enough. It’s time for us to take our power back.”

Head over to Crabbe’s Instagram to see more of her powerful body love posts.

Look. It’s not a competition. All babies are beautiful, including royal babies

But facts are facts, and the fact is that Bhutan’s royal baby, Dragon Prince Jigme Namgyel Wangchuck, is unbelievably cute. Like, knock-Prince-George-and-Princess-Charlotte-out-of-the-top-spot-for-cutest-babies cute.

OK, they are all equal in adorableness. But just look at this kid. The cheeks. The smile. The outfit. The tiny truck. It’s too much.

Baby Jigme, the son of King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck and Queen Jetsun Pema, turns one on Feb. 5. The new photo was released in celebration of both his birthday and his father’s birthday on Feb. 21, and is available for anyone to download as a desktop or phone calendar background (you’re welcome).

The Bhutanese website Yellow, which is run by the royal media department, correctly declared the photo “will melt your heart!”

The king and queen also released images on their own Facebook pages, which provide a wealth of opportunity to stare at this beautiful family.

Like we said, it’s not a competition. But swoon.

This Black History Month, We Declare: 'We, Too, Are America'

0

February marks the launch of Black History Month, a time to recognize the central role and revolutionary work of black people in America.

Historian Carter G. Woodson created Negro History Week in 1926 and it officially evolved into a month-long celebration forty years later. With white history being the dominant narrative in America, the work of revolutionary black Americans is often neglected and, while it should acknowledged all the time, February serves as a time to educate ourselves on the invaluable contributions of these trailblazers.

However, this year, Black History Month, a time meant to celebrate and embrace inclusion, also descends at a shameful moment in American history. Our president ran on a platform of racism, emboldened white supremacists and, in his first week in office, has signed executive orders putting marginalized groups in danger. The message is clear: Not all Americans belong here.

History teaches us that black men and women have been victims of oppression, discrimination and hate for centuries, so we understand the fear Muslim Americans have right now, and we’re familiar with Trump’s dogwhistle about sending the “feds” to Chicago. However, history also teaches us that men and women of color have been among some of the most revolutionary people to fight back against racial challenges.

Among these heroes is Langston Hughes, the black poet who was born on this day in 1902 and whose words accurately paint the reality of black plight and progress. In one of his most acclaimed poems titled “I, Too,” Hughes wrote about why being a “darker brother” should not disqualify him from the basic liberties afforded to white Americans. With four words at the end of the poem, Hughes serves a striking reminder that the basis of patriotism is not limited by race and that his blackness does not, and should not, discount his identity as one that is not wholly American: “I, too, am America.”

That’s why, this year, Black Voices is commemorating Black History Month by adopting and adapting Hughes’ message to declare: #WeTooAreAmerica. We will publish stories throughout the month that reinforce a message that all black people ― including those who identify as muslim, refugee, immigrant and queer ― are who help to define the identity of this country.

Over the last week, immigrants across America have spoken out against Trump by using hashtags like #NoBanNoWall and #ImAlreadyHome. Coincidentally, the hashtag #WeTooAreAmerica has also been used previously as part to tell immigrants’ stories ― a mission slightly different than ours.

Over the next month, Black Voices will use the hashtag to instill hope by highlighting the history of black trailblazers like Hughes. We will share the stories of legendary and little-known black men and women to spread inspiration at a time we need it most. We will recognize current-day black trailblazers in all types of industries and fields. We will highlight black heroes who embraced inclusivity and solidarity in their movements. We will show images of black people engaging in acts of love to fight back against hate. We will promote pieces that highlight the diversity among black people to honor the many ways in which we identify. We will disseminate self-care tips to encourage communities to prioritize mental and physical health. And, among other things, we will resurrect stories of resistance that remind us all that if these men and women ― armed with little protection and resounding might ― had the courage to overcome adversity, so do we.

In reflecting on our past, we will also use these lessons to help us paint a clearer vision for what lies ahead. For the third year in a row, Black Voices is teaming up with the Black Lives Matter network to bring back our “Black Future Month” blog series by inviting 28 black writers to explore issues that affect the black community and identify ways to make progress in these areas going forward. Each piece will also be accompanied by powerful artwork created by 28 different black artists.

At Black Voices, we understand both the burden and beauty of blackness — and we are committed to telling stories that explore all the complexities of our identity and culture. We invite you to follow along on Facebook and Twitter as we amplify the stories we believe deserve to be told, now more than ever, and give praise to the power among our people.

North West Shows Off Designs For The Upcoming Yeezy Kid's Line

While you were binge watching The Crown and lamenting the state of our world, North West was apparently busy becoming the world’s tiniest fashion designer.

According to Kim Kardashian’s snapchat posts yesterday, the long-awaited Yeezy kid’s line is on the way from Kanye West.

And it should come as a shock to no one that 3-year-old North, who has long rocked mini versions of Yeezy clothes, helped design it.

North is seen wearing an adorable sequined yellow dress and a matching shearling coat, while Kardashian can be heard asking, “Is that a Yeezy yellow shearling?” and “Hey, where’s our model?”

“Mommy and daddy are doing a kid’s line and these are some of the pieces,” Kardashian says in one clip. “Northie picked out the colors and the fabric.”

Wait. Hold on a second. Picked out the colors and the fabric? For the Kim and Kanye clothing line? We just stopped obsessing over brother Saint’s teeny tiny Yeezy 350s. Now we have to wrap our minds around the fact that this line, which we’ve been waiting for for what feels like forever, was designed in part by our favorite micro style icon? It’s almost too much to handle.

So far, no launch date has been given. But as this tweet shows, there’s no stopping the excitement of fans.

Twitter Is Losing It Over President Obama's Backwards Hat And Flip Flops

While the rest of the world goes up in flames, Barack and Michelle Obama are off on a well-deserved vacation.

The two jettisoned to Palm Springs immediately after Donald Trump’s inauguration, and are now hanging out and soaking up some sun on billionaire Richard Branson’s private island in the British Virgin Islands. Obama appears the most relaxed we’ve seen in years, as evidenced by his smile, shorts, flip-flops and, oh yeah, his backwards hat.

When photos of his relaxed look emerged, people on Twitter totally lost it:

Some people jokingly took the hat as a sign the Obamas are never coming back:

PLEASE COME BACK.

Dove Deodorant's #AlternativeFacts Campaign Trolls The Trump Administration

When Kellyanne Conway uttered the words “alternative facts” on Chuck Todd’s morning show a little over a week ago, she received instant backlash.

The Twitterverse quickly seized the opportunity to mock Conway’s terrible choice of words and a few brands also decided to have a little fun with her falsehoods.

Dove’s UK branch subtly trolled Conway with a two-page newspaper ad that contained “alternative facts” about Dove’s antiperspirant. The ad, which was created by Ogilvy London and placed in select UK papers, jokes that the new deodorant “increases your IQ by 40 points,” “rhymes with orange,” and “boosts your Wi-FI signal,” among other amazing falsehoods facts.

Here is the first page of the ad:

The second page of the ad reads, “New Dove antiperspirant cares for your skin like never before #Real Facts.”

Ogilvy and Mather Worldwide chief creative officer and co-chairman Tham Khai Meng spoke to Campaign U.S. about the ad.

“Brands live in a world of accountability. And that’s a good thing,” Tham said, adding that there was a bit of hesitation to go through with the ad at first. “To see one respond so swiftly with an #AlternativeFact moment, done gently and with a smile, reminds us of that.”

Chrissy Teigen, 2014’s Sports Illustrated Swimsuit issue cover girl, has made her return to the magazine’s famous pages.

The supermodel and mother of one slipped into a bikini for her first swimwear shoot since giving birth to baby Luna last April. As expected, she looks gorgeous in the first image, released by the magazine on Instagram Wednesday.

Just months after giving birth, @chrissyteigen got BACK in a bikini for SI Swimsuit...

A photo posted by Sports Illustrated Swimsuit (@si_swimsuit) on

While the “Lip Sync Battle” host was a little nervous about the shoot, she explained that everyone involved would embrace her body “no matter what’s happening and embrace the changes.”

“It took James [Macari] shooting it and and for me to see the photos to know that it was going to be OK,” Teigen said of posing for the shoot. “Oh my gosh, I was not prepared for that.”

Teigen admitted that, as a mother, it was nice to be “back in [her] element” during the shoot.

“It’s so important to my well-being that I come out here and am able to do this, and do something I’m proud of,” she said.

You can check out a behind-the-scenes clip from the shoot above.

Models Team Up To Demand Diversity At Fashion Week

At this point, there’s no honest way to talk about fashion week without also talking about diversity. While the mainstream is slowly but surely widening its standards of beauty, high fashion runways are noticeably taking longer to adjust.

Now the pressure to become more inclusive feels especially palpable. On Tuesday, 43 models wrote an open letter and an accompanying petition demanding diversity and safe health practices at New York Fashion Week later this month. As of Wednesday morning, over 1,000 other industry insiders and members of the public have signed it.

Their “#DearNYFW” letter follows the publication of research that confirms what many people in the industry already know to be true: “that unhealthy weight control practices are a serious problem in the industry. Too often, models are being pressured to jeopardize their health and safety as a prerequisite for employment.”

Published in partnership with the National Eating Disorders Association and the industry advocacy group Model Alliance, the letter and petition also call on designers to prioritize diversity ― an area that’s improved in recent seasons but is still a glaring problem.

The demand is not specific to the inclusion of varied bodies, the letter notes, stating its authors will be looking out for “diversity of race, size, age, and gender status, and we hope to see diversity within and across all of those categories.”

Body positivity advocate Iskra Lawrence, who has three million followers on Instagram, is among the 43 models who have signed the letter. The hope is that power in numbers helps spread the message.

“Through our social media platforms, which collectively reach millions of people, we will recognize the industry leaders who step up to this challenge,” the letter reads.

Also on the list are Sabina Karlsson, a model who walked in the Chromat and Christian Siriano shows last season, and Madison Schill, who left the modeling world in 2013 and is producing the upcoming body image documentary “Straight/Curve.”

“I remember being afraid of going into my agency to grab comp cards during the hectic casting season ― afraid my hips would be too big, or that the steps I’d been advised to take in restricting my development would have shown up on my skin overnight,” Schill told The Huffington Post. “I don’t want other girls to have to go through that, I want them to realize that health is never something we should deny ourselves in order to book a show, and that they can be appreciated and loved and beautiful when they aren’t depriving themselves, too.”

Here’s hoping designers keep the message in mind for many seasons to come.

A Full Dissection Of That Outfit Beyoncé Wore To Announce Her Pregnancy

Beyoncé, queen, announced Wednesday that she is blessing the masses with not one but two more angels disguised as humans, setting off shrieks around the world and making the world feel a little less broken for one fleeting moment.

Then the moment passed, and we were left with some questions. Questions about whether she’ll still show up at Coachella, questions about who could think up the funniest reaction and many, many questions about this look:

Posing nearly naked atop a bed of flowers, Queen Bey wore an Agent Provocateur bra (which were quickly identified by lingerie blogger Cora Harrington), a pair of baby blue silk bloomers and one large piece of green mesh netting.

Not everyone was taken with the look. The Huffington Post’s own Noah Michelson wasted no time bringing the hard-hitting questions to the forefront on Facebook:

“I’m having a hard time thinking about anything other than whose idea was it to shoot her in front of a funeral wreath in that awful bra and that pea soup green mosquito net? Is this some kind of coded illuminati message? Can we start a petition to get her art director fired? Help?”

Others commended her for doing whatever she damn wants to do at any given moment in time.

But if you, like Ellen Degeneres, wish to recreate this colorful, polarizing outfit, you’re in luck. Journelle carries a similar-looking bra that’s on sale for $33:

And these bloomers, which for some reason are for adults, are available on Etsy for just $45.57:

And for those looking to go all out, this outdoor mosquito netting from REI, at a bargain $16, should do the trick:

We are not worthy.
