I'm 60, And Yeah -- My Hair Is Barbie-Dream-House Pink

0
0

A few weeks ago,  I went to the salon and came out pink. I was thinking of something subtle and Helen Mirren-ish, but the only yarn they’d had for my Pussy Hat was a baby pink, and I didn’t really feel that suited me. So I went full-on, Barbie-Doll-Dream-House, tempered — artfully, by my hairdresser, Andrea — by some chunks of my natural gray.

Bold, you might say.

Or maybe cowardly. I went pink, not — as one friend guessed — for breast cancer. Or — her second guess — as a kind of permanent Pussy Hat statement against Trump. I went pink for two reasons. First, for the fun of it. And second, because I believed, with my silver — er, gray — hair, that I had become invisible.

I’ve been waging a war against invisibility since the beginning of chemo last year, when I got the huge glasses. I feared my eyelashes and eyebrows would fall out, and I wasn’t going to go quietly into that good night. Turns out, they didn’t fall out until chemo was over, and a prescription for Latisse resolved that pretty quick.

But I liked the big glasses even better with my fuzzy little post-chemo halo than I had with my wig. So I kept the glasses, balancing them out with enormous black plastic loop earrings.

Then, the post-chemo fuzz came in gray — er, silver. And, despite the glasses, despite the earrings, I just felt invisible.

It’s a well-known thing that people — men included — can feel invisible when they get to a certain age. So it’s not personal to me. One can even argue, as the podcasters behind Harry Potter and the Sacred Text did brilliantly in one episode, that invisibility (as symbolized by Harry’s invisibility cloak), is a symbol of white privilege.

Invisibility is not, however, a privilege that appeals to me. Maybe it’s being a first child, and having the stage stolen by my younger brother when I was two and a half. It’s my own personal take on Descartes. If I’m not seen, I’m not sure I really do exist.

So, like a bird watcher intent on finding exotic specimens in the wild, I’ve been on constant lookout for people with brightly-colored hair. I’ve found them in Hudson, NY, in Manhattan, in Montclair, NJ. Sometimes I asked politely if I could take their picture. Sometimes I asked if they dyed it themselves. A woman after a show the other night shared her pro tips. They all seemed cool.

And they were all, by the way, young. Despite Helen Mirren and what you see on the internet.

So it wasn’t really surprising when, after I posted a picture of myself with my pink hair and a new gray beret on Instagram, a friend wrote:

“Hope I’m as hip as you in 20 years. ;-)”

Meant kindly, I know. But it made me feel like a little old lady who’d just been described as “feisty.”

Which brings me right back almost to where I started. Little old lady. I’m the little old lady who my friend wants to be in 20 years, but I’m still the little old lady. Why does that make me cringe? Because, clearly, I’m an ageist myself! I can twist myself into a pretzel when I get existential about my hair. And my age. And my aged hair. (Calling Ashton Applewhite.)

Mainly, though, I like it, although sometimes I feel a bit of a shock when I pass a mirror. And it’s become an interesting litmus test. One of my doctors, in a masterly display of medical professionalism, ignored it completely the other day, not even cracking a smile. But the server at a restaurant last night just couldn’t stop goggling at me with wide-eyed admiration. A litmus test of what, I don’t know.

And it has occurred to me — especially when I’m in a car, subject to the whims of cops — that I have given up my invisibility cloak. Driving while pink. Not the hairstyle with which to break the law.

My husband has also found it helpful when arriving ahead of me at a restaurant.

The other night, meeting him at a ramen place, the host knew immediately that I was meeting a party, and exactly where he was seated. It was like a cheap parlor trick how quickly they matched us up. My husband smiled triumphantly and said he’d told he server, “Be on the lookout for the girl with hot pink hair.”

Later he confessed that those weren’t his exact words.

His exact words turned out to be: Be on the look-out for a 60-year-old woman with hot pink hair, and send her up to me.

23-Year-Old Beyoncé Almost Really Embarrassed Herself -- Twice -- At The 2005 Oscars

0
0

Let’s get this out of the way: Beyoncé is flawless. We all know this. However, it seems that some of her stunning awards-show dresses didn’t get the memo.

Though the superstar singer always looks like perfection at awards shows, she told “The Oprah Winfrey Show” in 2005 that in several of those looks, she had been hiding near-calamitous wardrobe malfunctions. Two of her more memorable mishaps actually occurred on the same night: the 77th Academy Awards.

“Oh, my god, shoe, please stay in my dress.”

Beyoncé was scheduled to perform three songs that Oscar night, one of which was “Learn to Be Lonely” from The Phantom of the Opera. As if her nerves weren’t enough to handle, Beyoncé had to manage the added stress of changing her entire look with super-human speed. “I had to get new hair, new makeup and a new dress in, like, three minutes,” she said.

In the rush to get on stage for her performance, Beyoncé’s shoe was never strapped. As she glided down the stairs in front of the packed theater and countless TV cameras, she tried to hide her struggle.

“I’m trying to remember the words and my ear monitor’s turned off ― and my shoe is off of my foot, actually, inside of the dress,” Beyoncé said. “So, I’m on one toe and I’m in one heel, walking down the stairs and I’m like, ‘Oh, my god, shoe, please stay in my dress!’”

“They’re going to say that I’m pregnant...”

This beautiful baby-blue Roberto Cavalli dress was one of Beyoncé’s many looks that night. She wore it to an after-party, but realized soon enough that the gown’s structure would create a problem when she was to make her unavoidably high-profile exit.

“I was at a party and I sat down, and the boning curved because I was sitting down,” Beyoncé explained. “On my way out, all the paparazzi was still outside and I said, ‘Oh, my god. They’re going to say that I’m pregnant.’”

At the time, 23-year-old Beyoncé certainly wasn’t pregnant, much less pregnant with twins, so she plastered on a smile and clutched the back of her dress to pull the fabric taut. “I’m holding it the whole time!” she said, laughing.

“That’s grace under pressure,” Oprah responded.

For Beyoncé, it was par for the course.

“It’s always these crazy moments,” she said, “but I always try to not let anyone else know.”

Twitter Slams Vogue For Photoshopping Ashley Graham And Gigi Hadid's Cover

Vogue’s latest cover is supposed to be a celebration of diversity, but social media is criticizing the fashion mag for seemingly Photoshopping model Ashley Graham.

Graham appears alongside fellow models Kendall Jenner, Gigi Hadid, Adwoa Aboah, Liu Wen, Vittoria Ceretti and Imaan Hammam for the cover of the March 2017 issue, which is about how “no norm is the new norm.”

Graham wears all black for the beach shot taken in Malibu, California, in December. The only plus-size model in the group, she poses with her hand positioned on her thigh, while Hadid’s arm extends across her waist.

Between the pose and the apparent photo-editing done to Graham’s arm, Twitter users were not having it.

Vogue did not immediately return a request for comment, but Graham addressed the hubbub about her pose after sharing the photo on Instagram. Once users began questioning the image, she pushed back, writing in the comments: “I chose to pose like that.. no one told me to do anything.”

In the issue, the 29-year-old says it’s about time the fashion industry hears the voices of real women who are bucking the stringent standards of the industry.

“Sixty-seven percent of the women in America wear a size 14 or larger,” she said. “Sixty-seven percent. Maybe you could ignore those consumers before, but now, thanks to social media, they’re making their voices heard. Women are demanding that brands give them what they want. And what they want is to be visible.”

Stefano Gabbana Apologizes For Body Shaming Lady Gaga

Designer Stefano Gabbana is taking back his unnecessary criticism of Lady Gaga’s body.

The younger half of design duo Dolce & Gabbana said he was among those who shockingly critiqued Gaga’s appearance during her incredible Super Bowl performance Sunday night. Though his initial thoughts weren’t public, Gabbana explained his change of heart in an Instagram post earlier this week.

“I know it’s strange, but finally something real not retouched!” he wrote. “The truth, reality. Yesterday I [criticized] it too, but I though about it and I was wrong!!! #real”

Commenters didn’t let Gabbana off the hook, and called him out for criticizing her in the first place.

“Stefano you have a lot to say about a lot of things you are definitely closed minded and clueless about,” Instagram user jjd3319 wrote. “You love calling people fat. First Adele now Gaga. Taking it back because of the backlash is such a PR move. You said it, and you meant it. You are part of the problem.”

Another user, who goes by yasilios, simply wrote, “Stefano you are a moron.”

On Tuesday, Lady Gaga addressed body shamers in an Instagram post, shutting down the ugly comments with an inspirational message to her fans.

“I heard my body is a topic of conversation so I wanted to say, I’m proud of my body and you should be proud of yours too,” the singer wrote. “No matter who you are or what you do. I could give you a million reasons why you don’t need to cater to anyone or anything to succeed. Be you, and be relentlessly you. That’s the stuff of champions. Thank you so much everyone for supporting me.”

Yes, Gaga!

Chelsea Handler Trolls Donald Trump With A Nordstrom Shopping Spree

Nordstrom’s decision to drop Ivanka Trump’s product lines was not delightful news for Donald Trump and Kellyanne Conway, but it thrilled people who have been boycotting businesses that work with the Trump family since the scandal-filled campaign season.

Many people took to social media to react to the news, including Chelsea Handler. But naturally, Handler took things one step further.

Handler and two friends ― “a gay, a Muslim and a Jew,” as she put it ― stopped by a Nordstrom location in Washington, D.C. and took their purchases straight to the White House to give “the finger” to the president.

Just a few hours earlier, Handler deftly challenged Trump’s complaint that his daughter was treated “unfairly” by Nordstrom

Well played, Handler. The only question we have left is... what’s in the bags?

There's Just Something Funny About This Photo Of Martha Stewart Stuck In The Snow

What is it, exactly, that is so funny about this tweet by Martha Stewart?

Is it the fact that Martha Stewart, a multi-millionaire, is driving a Ford truck with an enormous yellow snow plow attached to the front of it? Maybe it’s that she is in the middle of nowhere. Why are you in the middle of nowhere, Martha Stewart? Is it because it is impossible to imagine how her car ended up simultaneously in front of trees and behind a pile of snow? Or is it because of the confused look you can barely make out on her face? Could it be because of the grammatically hollow caption, “I decided to plow now I am stuck darn!!!!!” Or because it is all but impossible to decipher her tone? Perhaps it’s because we cannot tell who took the photo, or if that person is actually happy to be there. Who knows what we find funny about the tweet by Martha Stewart? But funny it is.

Sorry, But Melania Trump Is Probably Getting A Vogue Cover

Thanks to her husband’s comments and political positions, first lady Melania Trump has been ostracized by some members of the fashion community. Now it looks like Vogue, the bible that guides that entire community, is loosening its opposition to a Trump presidency.

The publication made its first political endorsement during the 2016 election, supporting Hillary Clinton, who was also personally advised by Editor-In-Chief Anna Wintour. But Wintour told the Wall Street Journal in a new interview that the magazine’s relationship with first ladies will stand, regardless of how it views an administration.

“We have a tradition of always covering whoever is the first lady at Vogue and I can’t imagine that this time would be any different,” Wintour explained.

“Covering” and “putting on the cover” are two different things, of course, but consider the mag’s track record: Clinton appeared on the cover during her time as first lady in 1998, while fashion sweetheart Michelle Obama graced the cover not once, not twice, but a whopping three times during her tenure in the White House.

Add that to the fact that Trump is a former model who already graced the cover of Vogue in 2005, and the fact that Wintour visited Trump Tower to chat with the president-elect back in December, and well, the statement feels all the more expected.

Head to the Wall Street Journal to read more.

Solange Is Strong And Gorgeous On Her First Elle U.S. Cover

Now this is the style hero we need right now.

Solange Knowles is rocking the March cover of Elle magazine in a fiery red puffy coat, with a pose that may or may not be a nod to our favorite female figurehead

Like her cover look, Solange’s recent album “A Seat A The Table” contains some fierce and much-welcome attitude as she sings about the black experience in America. But as the singer told Elle, she’s tried to infuse her “hard, messy” political conversations with “a certain lightness and airiness that could maybe help me get closer to having more light and airiness in my life.”

From red hot to white hot, we totally approve.

Scarlett Johansson Laments The Guilt And Challenges Working Moms Face

Scarlett Johansson is not afraid to speak candidly about the challenges of parenthood.

Speaking to Entertainment Tonight at the amfAR New York Gala, the actress opened up about her experience raising her 2-year-old daughter, Rose Dorothy.

“I don’t profess to know anything about parenting, anything more than anybody else,” she said. “Being a working mom ― it’s an incredible challenge, it’s an incredible gift, and I think you always feel a little bit of guilt,” she added.

“If you’re at work, you feel like you’re missing out on those special moments with your kid. If you’re with your kid, you feel like you’re not giving enough to your job. But it’s a balance,” the actress continued. “I have a lot of huge admiration and respect for working moms. I’m barely, barely holding it together.”

Johansson was a guest of honor at the amfAR Gala and received an Award of Courage for her work in raising awareness about HIV/AIDS.

The actress attended the event with her own mother, Melanie Sloan, whom she praised as one of her greatest inspirations.

“She never shielded us from what was going on in the zeitgeist in culture,” she said. “She always made us aware, you know, socially aware. She always encouraged us to be politically and socially active, so I couldn’t imagine a better date tonight.”

It Appears Miranda Kerr And Fiancé Evan Spiegel Are Waiting To Have Sex

It looks like Miranda Kerr and her fiancé Evan Spiegel are sticking to sexy Snapchats.

The model insinuated that she and her betrothed are waiting to have sex until after the wedding in a recent interview with UK paper The Times.

It all came out during an exchange about methods of birth control, after Kerr admitted that she wasn’t using protection. When the interviewer asked whether or not she was planning to have another baby, the model explained: “Not yet. Not until after we get married. My partner is very traditional.”

“We can’t... I mean we’re just... waiting,” she continued.

The apparent decision to wait is reminiscent of another celebrity couple, singer Ciara and Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson, who didn’t have sex until their wedding night.

Spiegel and Kerr were first reported to be dating in 2015 and made their red carpet debut in February 2016. Just a few months later, the two announced their engagement in July, using a Snapchat filter of course.

I said yes!!! ❤️ ❤️ ❤️

Kerr was previously married to actor Orlando Bloom. The two share a 6-year-old son, named Flynn.

The Huffington Post reached out to representatives for Kerr and Spiegel and will update this post accordingly.

Blowtorch Barber Is Hottest Thing In Gaza

In Ramadan Odwan’s barbershop in Gaza, hair isn’t just blow-dried, it’s blowtorch-dried.

“People have gone crazy about it, many people are curious to go through the experience and they are not afraid,” he told Reuters. “People here love adventures.”

Odwan, 37, is not the first stylist in the world to use flame to straighten hair, but his craft is unique in the Gaza Strip.

In his salon in the southern Gaza town of Rafah, Odwan applied what he described as a protective liquid coating to a customer’s hair - he declined to disclose its contents - before aiming for the head and pressing the button on a small blowtorch.

“I control how long I apply fire, I keep it on and off for 10 seconds or 15 seconds. It is completely safe and I have not encountered any accident since I started it two months ago,” Odwan added.

Odwan charges 20 shekels ($5.20) for a haircut and fire-straightening.

A barber for the past 18 years, he said part of the reason he uses the technique is to show that Palestinian barbers are as “professional as those out there around the world”.

How To Make This Glitter Eyeliner From Fashion Week Work In Real Life

0

The looks at New York Fashion Week are usually not what you’d call easy to pull off. Every once in a while, though, we’re blessed with a few things that can ― and should ― be recreated in real life.

This season, we’ve teamed up with fashion illustrator Emily Brickel Edelson to sketch out some of our favorite fashion and beauty looks from Fashion Week, including this glittery eye makeup from the Tadashi Shoji show on Thursday.

This look is extra dramatic for the runway, but you can tweak it by going a little lighter on the glitter or by applying fewer coats of mascara.

Swipe a bit of eyeshadow primer under your eye (we’re obsessed with Urban Decay’s primer potion, $20), then use a wet eyeliner brush to apply the glitter of your choosing (we like Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics’ cosmetic glitters, $15). Finish off with a few coats of mascara (like L’Oreal’s Voluminous mascara, $5.82) and a light swipe of white or pale pink eyeliner on your waterline (there are two great options here and here).

Voila, you’re ready for a birthday party, a trip to the supermarket or New Year’s Eve... really early.

The Grammy Awards 20 Years Ago Were So Typically '90s

With the 59th annual Grammy Awards just around the corner, we think it’s appropriate to honor music’s biggest night with a tribute to the past.

The year was 1997, and some of the the industry’s biggest stars ― Celine Dion, Diana Ross, Beck ― gathered at New York City’s Madison Square Garden for a night of awards, performances and jokes from host Ellen DeGeneres.

It was the year 14-year-old (!) LeAnn Rimes became the youngest Grammy winner ever, picking up trophies for Best New Artist and Best Female Country Vocal Performance. (She would later be dethroned by the Peasall sisters in 2002.) It was also the first time the ceremony took place at MSG.

Record of the Year and Song of the Year went to Eric Clapton’s “Change the World,” produced by Kenneth “Babyface” Edmonds and written by Gordon Kennedy, Wayne Kirkpatrick and Tommy Sims. Meanwhile, Album of the Year went to Celine Dion for “Falling Into You.”

Oh, yeah, and Hillary Clinton ― yes, the former Democratic presidential nominee ― picked up an award of her own for Best Spoken Word or Non-Musical Album for the audio version of her book It Takes a Village.

Below are just a few of the highlights from the 1997 award show ― worth a look even if only to see Lenny Kravitz in a furry hat and Coolio hanging out with Russell Simmons.

Tracee Ellis Ross: Pain Is Not A Stopping Point, It's A Chance To Persevere

0
0

Tracee Ellis Ross has never been one to shy away from being honest.

She’s beloved in Hollywood for telling it like it is and having fun while doing it. But she’s also keenly aware of the need for perseverance to survive life’s pain and challenges. The Golden Globe-winning actress has recently partnered with, yes, pain relief brand Motrin to launch their #WomanInProgress campaign, which aims to empower women by transforming the way they view painful moments and encourages them to see that pain can mean progress.

“We all know pain is a part of life,” Ross told The Huffington Post. “But I think changing our relationship to pain and looking at it in a different way is really revolutionary and important in how women and people move forward in their lives.”

Ross is right; reflecting on our pain is usually a private act that often reminds us of unflattering moments and memories. But Ross says it’s important that we explore ways to try to acknowledge and grow from such challenging experiences.

“Pain is not a stopping point,” she said. “It really is an opportunity to dig deeper and take a look at what the choices are to empower you as you move forward and keep growing.”

Ross admits that while her life may seem “glamorous” to the public, she herself is no stranger to experiencing pain. In fact, she says, most of the extraordinary things that have happened in her life, whether big or small, included some element of pain, discomfort or fear. Ross says moving past that pain and fear is actually where “so many of the gifts of life come from.”

In one humorous example, Ross referenced the night she hosted the 2016 Black Girls Rock Awards show and the pain she underwent in prepping for her epic opening dance performance.

“I’m not a dancer, I have bad knees, I do not have the hinge at the back of my hips that Rihanna has nor do I on a regular basis do what Beyoncé does, so I knew it was going to be a challenge for me, I was afraid to make a fool of myself,” Ross admitted. “It was a challenge and at the same time, it was really hard on my body. I threw my back out, my knees were incredibly swollen. I could have used all of those as as a reason to stop and not do it.”

Ross persevered and said it turned out to be one of the best nights of her life. “What I left with was this incredible experience that I never would have tried if I had let the idea of the being in pain or being afraid stop me,” she said.

Yet Ross knows that emotional pain also has the potential to be burdonsome. “Just like anybody else, I’ve experienced the pain of disappointment, of things not going the way I want on certain things or the way I wish that they had or being at a certain place in my life and thinking why has that not happened,” Ross said.

But she added that while these carrying these emotions can be cumbersome, digging deeper to identify lessons to learn from them can be a more rewarding experience. She encourages people to seek a holistic approach to looking at pain as a “part of our lives,” and not as something that should usher in retreat.

Ross’ empowering message comes as many marginalized communities face the fear and pain caused by President Donald Trump. As an advocate for equality, Ross acknowledges the heightened racial and political climate America currently faces.

“It’s frightening in a very real way for a lot of people,” Ross said. “I think right now this is a time for people to stretch outside of their comfort zone and help each other, listen to each other, support each other and be a voice for those in certain situations [who] don’t have a voice.”

“I also think this is really a time to listen to those who have been at the pointed end of discrimination and that through their own personal life experiences have gathered and gained and have amazing tools and abilities and know how to navigate this kind of climate,” she added. “I think we need to take each other’s guidance and learn from each other.”

Surprise! Milo Ventimiglia Debuts New Clean-Shaven Look For 'This Is Us' Role

We’ve gotten so used to seeing Milo Ventimiglia with facial hair for his role on “This Is Us” that it’s hard to imagine what he looked like without it.

Well, imagine no more. Let’s have one last look ...

The actor, who portrays Jack Pearson on NBC’s hit show, is now clean-shaven ― and it’s all for the role. From the sound of it, the series will go even further back into Jack’s history, perhaps showing him as a young man.

“Jack way back when,” Ventimiglia tweeted on Thursday, alongside a photo from the set.

“This Is Us” goes back and forth in time, so seeing Jack sans beard has us wondering just what’s in store for his character as filming winds down for Season 1.

Executive producer Ken Olin added to the hype with this week, tweeting: “The last 4 episodes of This Is Us will go places we’ve never been before. Here’s a taste.”

”This Is Us” airs Tuesdays at 9 p.m. ET on NBC.

This Quick Trick Will Help You Remember Anything

0
0

If you’d like to get better at remembering details, here is a trick for you: Impart your newly acquired knowledge to someone else.

A recent study published in the journal Learning and Memory found that students who repeated new information to someone else immediately after learning it could recall those details better ― and longer ― than students who did not.

To figure out how to increase the chances of remembering details, researchers from Texas performed three different studies across groups of 20 undergraduate students.

In the first experiment, the researchers showed participants short clips of several different obscure films. Students were asked to recall information about the movies starting from several minutes to seven days after watching. Not surprisingly, the participants forgot details as more time went on.

In the second experiment, students were given a cue, such as a screen shot of the movie or the film’s title, before watching the clips. These participants remembered the general plot just as well as the first group, but performed significantly better when recalling the little details, such as color, sound and gestures, according to the study.

Finally, researchers showed another group of students movie clips and also asked them to tell another person about the film shortly after watching it. It was this group that remembered both the central theme and little details for longer than any other group.

“By actively retrieving the information when you tell it to someone else, it provides the opportunity to ‘re-encode’ or to re-store the information, which can lead to better long-term [memory] retention,” lead study author Melanie Sekeres, a psychologist at Baylor University, told The Huffington Post.

The effect of retelling information still requires more research on a larger and more diverse group of people. For example, it is not clear if this technique would help older adults with cognitive decline retain memories in more vivid detail.

But the method is obviously worth a shot. If you have an important presentation at work and want to rely less on Powerpoint slides, it might be worth repeating the slides out loud to a trusted colleague. Or, if you want to ace a test, tell your friend what is scribbled on those flash cards.

And the technique about cues which helped in the second experiment is also especially helpful in social situations, Sekeres said. If you’re at a gathering where you’re meeting new people, she recommends testing yourself to remember important details like someone’s name. For example, think to yourself, “Jim had the green cap and Susan wore the red dress and brought a casserole,” Sekeres said. The green cap and casserole become the markers to help you retain, or re-code, a new name.

Not a bad little party trick ― or everyday trick ― if you ask us.

Celebrities Mock Donald Trump's Attack On Nordstrom By Shopping There

Celebrities are taking a page out of Chelsea Handler’s playbook and throwing their money at Nordstrom.

Just a few days after the president of the United States attacked the retailer on Twitter for dropping his daughter Ivanka Trump’s line, Handler went on a Nordstrom shopping spree, then took her purchases to the White House.

Celebrities including Rosie O’Donnell, Michael Moore, Kristen Davis, and Aisha Taylor quickly shared their own Nordstrom purchases:

Mia Farrow, Aidy Bryant, Judd Apatow and Patton Oswalt were among those who tweeted glowing endorsements of the store or talked about future shopping trips:

Nordstrom cited a lack of sales for their decision to stop carrying Ivanka Trump merchandise, but George Takei saw the move as something bigger happening with businesses in America:

It seems like all of the attention to Nordstrom paid off, as Handler pointed out on Twitter:

Your move, Trump!

While gorgeous models in incredible designs dance down the runway during Fashion month, President Donald Trump continues his fight to ban immigrants from certain countries and his Twitter tirades against those he feels have wronged him and his family.

The folks at industry news site Business of Fashion decided to rally against the current political climate by launching the #tiedtogether movement for Fashion Month. BoF’s founder and Editor-in-Chief, Imran Amed, explained the site’s resistance in a statement:

In light of the current uncertainties and turmoil around the world, The Business of Fashion invites the fashion industry to stand together and make a clear statement of solidarity, unity and inclusiveness. This is not a political statement, it is a positive statement in support of humanity during a time of turmoil and fear in many nations around the world. We aim to start a global movement within the fashion industry to demonstrate the power of unity and inclusivity, and encourage fashion enthusiasts and people outside the industry to join.

Those who join the #tiedtogether movement are showing their support by wearing white bandanas. Designers Prabal Gurung, Tommy Hilfiger, Thakoon, Phillip Lim, and Diane von Furstenberg will be wearing the bandanas during Fashion Week.

Wear a white bandana as a sign to the world that you believe in the common bonds of humankind — regardless of race, sexuality, gender or religion,” Amed wrote on his site.

Hilfiger put white bandanas all of the models at his TommyLand show on Wednesday.

Rihanna is just plane gorgeous in an aviation-themed spread for the March issue of Harper’s Bazaar.

The blonde goddess channeled Amelia Earhart with a twist, wearing haute couture dresses paired with vintage goggles and headwear.

The shoot is accompanied not by a customary interview with Rihanna, but rather by a 1929 essay Earhart wrote for Bazaar describing her in-flight fashion.

RiRi paid tribute to the famous aviator on Instagram, saying it was “such an honor to pay tribute to this dynamic badass woman!”

What a fly pair! See more photos at Harper’s Bazaar.
