This Smart Sports Bra Claims It Can Help Manage Your Stress

There is no better feeling than ripping your bra off at the end of the day. But a new bra promises to help you feel good while you’re wearing it, too.

Vitali is smart sports bra on Kickstarter that claims to work as “your intuitive wellness coach.” The bra uses sensors and gentle taps to track breathing, posture and heart rate variability, or HRV, which its makers say “is a key physiological indicator of stress.”

“When Vitali notices your HRV getting low, it gently reminds you to take a deep breath,” a promotional video explains. The bra then guides you through a breathing pattern in sync with your heart’s rhythm.

“Doing this stops your body’s unconscious reaction to stress before it starts,” the video says.

Studies have shown that HRV may be a good indicator of stress levels, and we already know there are both physical and physiological benefits of mindful breathing. But we’d also definitely benefit from a reminder to stop slouching. Using a gentle tap, the Vitali will remind you to sit up straight, like an annoying yet useful friend.

Like finding your zen in a fancy yoga class, this high-tech version of mindfulness will cost you. The bra, which includes the tapping “gem,” a charger and a corresponding app, will set you back $249. People who pledge now can purchase one for $129 as a “super early bird” deal.

Vitali has raised over $25,000 in Kickstarter funding as of Thursday. With roughly another $25,000 to go to reach its goal and 32 days to raise it, the creators might be using their own bras to try to keep calm as we speak. But we’re definitely intrigued to see how these would work in our own lives.

Head to Kickstarter to learn more.

The Great Reason You Might Be Bored By Candice Huffine's Elle Cover

$
0
0

Elle revealed six cover stars for its May swimsuit issue this week. They include Bella Hadid, Jasmine Tookes, Hailey Baldwin, Elsa Hosk, Maria Borges and Candice Huffine

Huffine’s appearance marked the model’s first American magazine cover, and the news garnered headlines like, “Model Candice Huffine Hopes Her New Elle Cover Shows Women ‘Their Size Is Not an Indication of What Is Possible’” and “Here’s Why Candice Huffine’s Elle Cover Is So Important.”

Huffine herself even told the glossy that she hopes her appearance can help all women “know that they can become anything that they want and they can have anything they want in this life,” adding, “and their size is not an indication of what is possible for them.”

To be honest, though, this isn’t the first time a plus-size model has graced a cover recently. And that’s a great thing.

At this point, featuring a curvy model doesn’t seem all that revolutionary ― and that’s what’s most exciting about this cover.

Huffine’s appearance signals yet another step forward in the move toward a more inclusive industry. And with an increasing number of brands and magazines following suit, we might dare to say that this is all just becoming ... normal. And really, isn’t that the goal? Isn’t true inclusivity achieved when we don’t feel the need to keep talking about it all the time?

If you’re not convinced, consider some of the other magazines that have featured curvy models on their covers in recent memory. There was the Ashley Graham Sports Illustrated cover seen around the world, which paved the way for her to appear on Cosmopolitan, Vogue U.K. and Vogue U.S.

Women’s Running featured plus-size models Erica Schenk, Nadia Aboulhosn and Huffine on its covers over the past two years. Iskra Lawrence starred on Self Magazine’s last-ever print issue. There’s still plenty of room to grow, but it certainly feels refreshingly more common.

Add that to the fact that as Refinery29 pointed out, Huffine is the only cover star whose full body is showing and nowhere does it mention that she is “curvy” or “plus-size.”

This is the best kind of boring we could ever imagine.

Cheeky Jeans Cost $1,700 To Reveal Your Bare Bum

If you’re looking for the perfect pair of pants to show off your entire bum, this design house has just the jeans for you.

Vetements, a haute-streetwear collective, recently introduced a less-than-practical line of jeans from a collaboration with Levi’s. Available in a few different styles ― including corduroy― the pants are a patchwork of different shades and uncomfortably placed zippers.

The zippers actually work, which means you (or someone else) can unzip the pants, revealing whatever you do or don’t have on underneath. You’d think for the outrageous $1,715 price tag, one could expect some more coverage. (And it’s even steeper for a corduroy version, pricing in at $1,985.)

There’s a certain edge to moms who love to curse. For them, nothing sends the message better than a well-placed F-bomb when they’re doling out hard-earned life advice. Or just telling you to hang up your damn coat.

Besides, research shows that people who use curse words actually have larger vocabularies. So check out some gifts that show the mom in your life just how much you love her and her sailor’s mouth.

Wash Away All Your Sin By Watching Day-Old Goats Learn How To Jump

Sunflower Farm Creamery in Maine has churned out something even sweeter than its homemade caramel.

The dairy has released baaa-rilliant video featuring 1-day-old goats in sweaters learning how to jump because sometimes the world is good, OK?

According to Sunflower Farm’s YouTube page, about 20 goats are expected to give birth this spring, and the first arrivals, who are featured in the video, came on April 9. The proud mother’s name is Rhubarb and her kids’ names are Gershwin, Butterscotch, Marigold and Bruno. And if that isn’t cute enough, the babies were dressed in sweaters because the Maine weather was a tad too chilly for their new, fragile little bodies.

While many dairy farms kill animals that don’t serve an economic purpose for the operation ― like males or goats that are no longer producing milk ― Sunflower Farm boasts about being a “no cull” operation that allows all its animals to live out there days in peace.

In addition to treating their “little goats like queens,” the farm also produces feta and chevre, and starting June 1 it will offer yoga on the premises as well.

We kid you not.

Get Your Keychains Ready: The Original Tamagotchi Is Back

$

It’s official: 2017 is the year the ‘90s came full circle.

Just like chokers, crop tops and platform sandals, the original Tamagotchi, a ‘90s kid staple, is back on the market.

Bandai, the Japan-based toy company responsible for the pocket pet craze, this year released on Amazon Japan a game modeled after the original Tamagotchi (the one with the basic, green-tinted LCD display), but people in the U.S. are just catching on now.

Bandai first debuted its pixelated pet game in Japan in 1996, and in the U.S. in 1997.

From then on, kids, teenagers and, let’s be honest, a few easily distracted adults, would eagerly wait for their Tamagotchi eggs to hatch into a pet made of the most basic digital graphics (read: literal pixels). Users had to feed their pet, play with it and pick up its poop with the help of three tiny rubber buttons.

And if anyone slacked in their parenting responsibilities, their digital darling would eventually die.

This isn’t the first Tamagotchi revival. In fact, the handheld classic toy never disappeared from the toy market.

Bandai has released a number of updated Tamagotchi products over the years, including models with multicolor displays, devices that allow users to raise entire families of Tamagotchi and a Tamagotchi game app for your iPhone. Katy Perry and Orlando Boom even wore the digital eggs to the tech-themed Met Gala in 2016

Despite a few missing icons and its slightly smaller size, the re-released Tamagatchi stays true to the original, with its monochromatic display and six original Tamagotchi characters, according to The Telegraph.

They’re currently only available in Japan, but if you need to satisfy your #TBT vibes sooner, we suggest searching through your childhood closet for your old (and probably dead) pocket pet. Or you can buy one of the newer models on Amazon’s U.S. marketplace.

Carrie Fisher's Daughter Wore A Princess Leia Tribute Dress And We're Not Crying, You're Crying

It’s not the “same jacket,” but it is a similar dress.

Actress Billie Lourd wore a custom mini version of her mom Carrie Fisher’s iconic Princess Leia gown Thursday at Star Wars Celebration, a four-day festival in Orlando dedicated to all things from a galaxy far, far away.

Lourd collaborated with Tom Ford to design the chalk-colored dress with kimono sleeves, and it was a timely tribute: The event marked Lourd’s first public appearance since Fisher’s death in December

Lourd was on hand to help George Lucas and Kathleen Kennedy debut a new video tribute to Fisher that premiered on the first day of the festival. She delivered a heartfelt speech to the crowd, recalling her mother’s love of the film and its dedicated fans.

“My mom, like Leia, wasn’t ever afraid to speak her mind and say things that might have made most people uncomfortable, but not me and not you,” she said. “That was why she loved you, because you accepted and embraced all of her.”

Lourd wrote on Instagram that she felt “the ultimate strength of the force from all the incredible fans at #starwarscelebration after our tribute to my #momby.”

The force lives on through Lourd and her touching tributes ― spoken and sartorial.

Why This 6th-Grade Girl Purposefully Broke Her School's Sexist Dress Code

$

Molly Neuner stood up to her school’s sexist dress code in a pretty badass way.

The King Middle School sixth grader from Portland, Maine was sitting down to snack time during class this past Monday when her teacher confronted her about her outfit, the Portland Press Herald reports. The teacher asked Molly and another female student to stand up, and proceeded to measure the length of Molly’s tank top straps and the other girl’s skirt.

“She made us feel really uncomfortable,” Molly told the Herald. “It was really uncomfortable and weird.”

According to the Herald, the King Middle School dress code does not permit “short or tight-fitting skirts or shorts (no shorter than finger-tip length), thin-strapped, revealing tops (like tube tops, halter tops or low-cut tops) on girls and tank tops on boys.”

When Molly got home later that day, she decided to push back on what she felt was the school’s unfair dress code policy. She decided to wear another tank top to school in protest but, this time, she had a message.

On Wednesday morning, Molly dressed in a white tank top with spaghetti straps (pictured above) and wrote down her forearm: #IAmNotADistraction.

Molly told the Herald that 20 other girls in her class broke the dress code that day in solidarity. “It was so cool to see everyone doing it,” she said.

Molly’s protest prompted principal of King Middle School Caitlin LeClair to meet with her parents to discuss the dress code.

“We plan to take this feedback and use it as an opportunity to have some students’ and parents’ input,” LeClair told the Herald.

Although the current dress code will remain in place, there will be a review at the end of the school year where students can weigh in.

Molly’s mother, Christina Neuner, told the Herald that while she’s proud of her daughter, she was very upset with the dress code: “It’s so crazy. Is it 1960? What is going on? What does the strap have anything to do with her education?”

Head over to the Portland Press Herald to read more about Molly’s story.

What Is Shiso? Gwyneth Paltrow's New Scent Will Mystify Most Of Us

$

Gwyneth Paltrow has tried to get us onboard with all sorts of funky products via her website and newsletter Goop, from vaginal eggs to mold-resistant shower heads. And per usual, the brand’s latest must-buy leaves us scratching our heads.

This week, Goop debuted a signature perfume and candle fragrance meant to smell like shiso. But before we dish out $165 per bottle on the Goop website, we want to know what shiso is, and what it smells like.

For many of us in the American audience who don’t know, shiso is a Japanese herb perhaps best known for its role as a wasabi holder on sushi trays. But there’s really a lot more value to shiso than that.

What is shiso?

Shiso is a member of the mint family and a popular ingredient in Asian cooking. In Victorian England, it was called beefsteak plant. Perilla is a more current American term for shiso, but may also refer to the broader family of mint plants of which shiso is a part.

What does shiso perfume smell like?

According to Goop, using shiso as a primary scent is rare in the perfume world (which appears true: a quick web search surfaced only one other perfume made to smell like the stuff). Goop says its fragrance smells like “spicy greens, crushed stems, and ancient exotic woods.” Translation: shiso “has a scent reminiscent of cinnamon and cloves,” as Tao executive chef Ralph Scamardella told Food Republic last year.

How does shiso grow?

Shiso grows in various climates all over Japan. You can seed shiso in your regular garden or start it in a seed starting tray, then transition it to soil once it grows tall. Shiso is popular as a decorative garden plant that can easily be tossed into dishes.

It sounds like I should eat it, not wear it.

You can do both! Shiso has a minty flavor that performs beautifully in stir-friesmeat dishes and traditional pickled plums. It’s used as a garnish and is often sliced and added to noodle dishes. American restaurants have taken note of shiso lately, adding it to fancy cocktails and secret menu items like grilled scallops. Try it out!

New Gucci Campaign Features Solely Carefree Black Models And It's Everything

In a fashion world void of adequate diversity, Gucci just released a powerfully beautiful ad campaign featuring strictly black models.

Vibrant, carefree black people appear in the label’s pre-fall 2017 campaign, “Soul Scene.” Inspired by England’s underground Northern Soul movement of the 1960s, the ad features models Nicole Atieno, Elibeidy, Bakay Diaby and Keiron Berton Caynes accompanied by 25 dancers.

The images, photographed by Glen Luchford and styled by Gucci creative director Alessandro Michele, are set in dancehalls of the Mildmay Club in London. They highlight the unconventional freedom and self-expression of young people through performance, art and dance, according to Gucci’s Instagram post.

The campaign also pays homage to a prominent black nightlife photographer of the ‘60s and ‘70s, Malick Sidibé.

This campaign, which Gucci teased in January by posting nine of the models’ audition tapes, is a break from shadier moments in fashion. Brands like Marc Jacobs and Tory Burch have capitalized off of black art and culture without hiring a single black model in the process.

Gucci has also admittedly struggled with inclusion. But in February, the Italian luxury brand made a pledge to foster diversity in every area of its business. Though its latest campaign is full of much-needed carefree melanin, it only scratches the surface of solving fashion’s diversity problem.

This Simple Hack Will Make Your Beauty Products Last Way Longer

$

Proper skincare is worth the investment, but that doesn’t make it any less painful to fork over your hard-earned cash.

It does mean this little hack is genius, because it helps make those beloved products last longer.

Reddit user -callievee- recently uploaded a photo of an eye cream to the site’s Makeup Addict page. Product has stopped coming out, so she cut the tube open from the bottom. The discovery? A hefty amount of eye cream that would have otherwise been thrown away.

Genius, right? We’re upset just thinking about the total value of creams and lotions and serums we’ve thrown away, assuming there was none left. And all that could have been salvaged by a pair of scissors, determination, and a binder clip to keep tubes sealed again between uses.

Fellow Redditors commented that they use the same method on sunscreens, shampoos, conditioners ― pretty much anything that can be cut open from the bottom.

Go forth and save those products, people.

Plus-Size Blogger Explains Why We Need More Underwear Selfies

$

You may not think of underwear selfies as being necessarily empowering. But Jasmine Grimes, a San Francisco-based plus-size blogger, might make you see them in a new, body-positive light.

Grimes recently posted a photo of herself in her underwear on Instagram in response to people who, she wrote in an accompanying caption, “discount the importance of a good underwear selfie.”

It’s easy to write off a revealing photo like this one as attention grabbing, but Grimes doesn’t see it that way, especially when the people sharing the photos represent diverse body types. “There’s something magical about a fat girl flaunting her curves unapologetically in clothes that others would say only belongs to a certain body type because it inspires others to do the same, just like an underwear selfie,” she wrote.

Grimes elaborated further to Refinery29, explaining that she believes “women post underwear selfies to celebrate their bodies and to inspire other women to try and be as brave.”

There is undoubtedly little representation of diverse body shapes in the media and even in our social media feeds, but it’s people like Grimes who can empower more people to share photos of their own. Grimes, who wrote she used to “scour Instagram for photos of women who had my body type showing it off” because it inspired her to follow suit, stressed the importance of more people doing so.

“If a single image can change people’s perceptions, then what do you think a photo of a fat girl in lingerie can do?” she wrote.

Preach. Anyone else feel empowered to snap a selfie right about now?

'Feather Brows' Are Here And The Internet Has A Lot Of Feelings

$

Feather eyebrows are not a flight of fancy.

They are a real thing, created by real teens living in the real country of Finland.

Stella Sironen, a 19-year-old makeup artist and her friend, Leevi Ikäheimo, came up with the idea by accident one lazy Sunday while Ikäheimo was brushing out Sironen’s eyebrows.

“Suddenly he busted out laughing,” Sironen told the Huffington Post.

Curious, Sironen took a gander at herself on her phone’s camera and totally got it.

“He had made a middle part on my brows … and we just laughed about it for the rest of the night.”

Sironen thought the look was so funny, that the next day she took a glue stick to her brows and decided to part them again. She paired the feathered follicles with some eye-catching blue mascara and posted a picture of the creation to Instagram.

The post soon went viral, receiving over 45,000 likes and the hashtag #featherbrows was born. The bold brow also ended up being pretty polarizing, tearing the online beauty community into two firm camps: Team YAS I Shall Recreate This Look and Team Ick, No Those Are The Stuff Of Nightmares.

Opinions were expressed on Instagram and Twitter.

As for Sironen, she is surprised by the response, especially since she posted her photo in jest. She even posted a second photo of the look and in the caption explained that the initial photo was a joke.

Yet, regardless of her post’s nature, she doesn’t really get the uproar about eyebrows.

“It’s strange that there is eye art, lip art and many other forms of creative makeup but brows have remained untouchable for years,” Sironen told HuffPost. “We’ve seen crazy eyebrows on fashion editorials and runways forever. I truly hope that this inspired makeup artists to explore brow art and experiment more!”

What John Legend And Chrissy Teigen Learned In One Year Of Parenting

$

It’s a big day for John Legend and Chrissy Teigen. Their daughter, Luna Simone Stephens, turns 1 today!

What a year it’s been for the couple, who have opened up about parenting experiences like sleep deprivation, postpartum depression and shaming― on and off social media.

Happy birthday, Luna Simone!

A post shared by John Legend (@johnlegend) on

In honor of Luna’s birthday, we’ve rounded up some of her famous parents’ standout quotes about raising kids. Keep scrolling for some reflective, hilarious and always real thoughts on parenting from John Legend and Chrissy Teigen.

On birth:

“No one told me I would be coming home in diapers too.” ― Chrissy

On the pressure to “bounce back”:

“Anyone in the public eye, we have all the help we could ever need to be able to shed everything. So I think people get this jaded sensation that everybody’s losing [pregnancy weight] so quickly, but we just happen to be the ones who are out there. We have nutritionists, we have dietitians, we have trainers, we have our own schedules, we have nannies. We have people who make it possible for us to get back into shape. But nobody should feel like that’s normal, or like that’s realistic.” ― Chrissy

A post shared by John Legend (@johnlegend) on

On being a new parent:

“It just takes over your life when you have a child ... I spent a lot of time at home with her for the first three months and with my wife, you know, it just humbles you. I think everyone struggles with being a new parent, everyone’s trying to figure it out and I think it’s a humbling process.” ― John

On shaming:

“Funny there’s no dad-shaming. When both of us go out to dinner, shame both of us so Chrissy doesn’t have to take it all. We’ll split it.” ― John

“I know that when I post something, if she’s in a car seat, I’ve got to be ready for the million people telling me she’s in the car seat wrong, even though she’s in there correctly. At this point, I know what they’re going to say before they say it. If I’m holding her while I’m cooking, or if I’m holding her within 10 feet of a stove top, I’ve kind of just come to expect it.” ― Chrissy

“Photos are literally split-second moments in time that evolve. I despise mommy shamers. I am a proud shamer of mommy shamers.” ― Chrissy

On equal parenting:

“[There are] a lot of people that still think it’s a woman’s job to do the child rearing. I think it’s something we should share.” ― John

On breastfeeding:

“I just think it’s so funny. Sometimes I’m Googling how to do it better. I’m like, ‘Is it working? Is it taking? I don’t think I’m feeling enough pain!’ You just get so confused about how it’s supposed to feel, and as hard as anyone said it was, I feel like it somehow managed to be harder.” ― Chrissy

“They just use you for your milk and you just feel like you are just a cow all day.” ― Chrissy

“Just spray tanned around my breast pump outline. The logistical challenges of a healthy beach glow while boobing are incredible.” ― Chrissy

have you ever seen a more "why me?" face

A photo posted by chrissy teigen (@chrissyteigen) on

On postpartum depression:

“Getting out of bed to get to set on time was painful. My lower back throbbed; my shoulders — even my wrists — hurt. I didn’t have an appetite. I would go two days without a bite of food, and you know how big of a deal food is for me ... I couldn’t figure out why I was so unhappy. I blamed it on being tired and possibly growing out of the role: ‘Maybe I’m just not a goofy person anymore. Maybe I’m just supposed to be a mom.’” ― Chrissy

“You don’t see it coming. You’re not emotionally prepared for someone that’s going through a dark time as you’re welcoming this new life. When you don’t understand what’s happening, it’s a bit challenging to figure it out and you don’t know if it’s something you’ve done or some other reason why she’s not feeling well. Once you understand what the reasons are then it makes perfect sense and you can adjust accordingly.” ― John

“You should read about it and understand what it is and really just be there to help. You need to be present and you need to be compassionate. And we’re all learning and trying to figure it out as we go. At least do that and try to figure it out together.” ― John

Back on set for #lipsyncbattle season 3B!

A post shared by chrissy teigen (@chrissyteigen) on

On watching your baby grow up:

“I love seeing Luna grow and develop. I love all the new things that happen every week, every day even. And I LOVE when she smiles!” ― John

“I want to work less now, you know? I want to be home more, and be able to just help my wife with whatever she needs. Also, just be there to experience [Luna] growing up. I want to take them on tour. I want to be around.” ― John

On “doing it all”:

“My mom lives with us. I have hair and makeup people. I’m not getting up and doing all this by myself. If I’m not being done for something, I’m not going anywhere. A lot of hands go into it. We have help. It’s important for people to know that.” ― Chrissy

6 months old!

A post shared by John Legend (@johnlegend) on

On sleep:

“My biggest parenting conundrum: why it is so hard to put someone who is already sleepy to sleep?” ― Chrissy

“When Luna is awake I want her to sleep and when she is asleep I want her awake. This is my parenting life.” ― Chrissy

On date night:

“I’m not kidding, I go there not to watch a movie, I go there to sleep. I order food, lay on my side and shovel it into my mouth. I get the blanket and lay there and he watches the movie and I am passed out.” ― Chrissy

On hopes for the future:

“Just having the product of our love right in front of us, it’s a really powerful thing. I feel the responsibility that comes with that. We want to raise her into a great human being and hopefully, we can do that. It makes you kind of reprioritize what matters the most to you, and think about the kind of world you want to raise your daughter in.” ― John

The Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival kicked off this weekend and, as has become tradition, celebrities flocked to the desert for the music, and perhaps more importantly, the photo ops.

Naturally, reigning Coachella queen Vanessa Hudgens was there in all her boho festival fashion glory, and Paris Hilton showed up to “#slay.” Selena Gomez and The Weeknd were there too, and they gave us what might be their cutest couple photo yet. And of course, Kendall and Kylie Jenner showed up to host a party for Bumble.

If your social media feed was miraculously free of music festival snaps this weekend, we feel it is our duty to inform you that Coachella kicked off in Indio, California on Friday.

Fashion at the annual crop top-tastic gathering has become more of a parody of itself with every passing year. The desert festival featured a slew of major performances, but our feeds are populated mostly by a sea of bikini tops and fishtail braids.

This year, we learned that flower crowns still have a place in the hearts of street style hopefuls, along with coordinating sets, teeny-tiny shorts and SO. MUCH. GLITTER.

Check out our picks for the most Coachella outfits at Coachella below.

If Coachella is the temple at which sparkle enthusiasts go to pray, Rihanna is their undisputed leader.

Rih put all the other festive festival-goers to shame in Indio, California this weekend by wearing the most intense look of them all: A sparkly Gucci bodysuit that came with a matching face cover, ripped denim shorts and a graphic tank top.

" I can't go home yet, cuz enough people ain't seen my outfit "

In a truly relatable Instagram post, Rih captioned a shot of her look, “I can’t go home yet, cuz enough people ain’t seen my outfit.” We feel you, Rih.

She then defied all odds by adding the face covering while somehow managing to keep her sunglasses on ― and also somehow still looking pretty freaking cool.

phresh out.

There are many things we’d do in the name of fashion, but this just seems itchy. Still, we can’t deny it looks even cooler in action that it does in photos. She is glowing!

The look came straight off the fall/winter 2017 runway...

... but also reminds us a lot of the jaw-dropping transparent Adam Selman dress Rihanna wore to the CFDA Fashion Awards in 2014.

As some Twitter users pointed out, she basically squashed the entire competition for “best Coachella look” with ease.

Keep shining bright, Rih.

Melania Trump dressed festively for the annual White House Easter Egg Roll on Monday, wearing a pale pink tea-length dress and matching flats.

But we’re too distracted by one pointed meme to comment further.

Even the bunny looks like he just heard Katniss volunteer as tribute.
