Muslim Writer Schools Troll Who Told Him To Take Off His 'Stupid Hijab'

Author and lawyer Qasim Rashid frequently finds himself playing the part of teacher for Islamophobes on Twitter. Backed by more than 70,000 followers, he tries to demystify common misconceptions about Islam.

This week, Rashid joined a vocal chorus of Muslim influencers expressing their horror over Monday’s terrorist attack in Manchester, England, and explaining once again that such incidents are not representative of their faith.

But his words once again fell on some deaf ears. One particularly confused troll tweeted at Rashid to take off his “stupid hijab”:

Rashid recently posted a long and informative series of tweets explaining that the Quran commands men, as well as women, to observe hijab rules ― that is, principles of modesty. The word “hijab” also refers specifically to a head covering that some Muslim women choose to wear.

In all likelihood, the Twitter user was actually referring to the songkok ― an Indonesian cap worn by some Muslim men ― which Rashid is seen wearing in his profile photo.

Rashid responded in the best way:

Nearly 16,000 Twitter users agreed.

But he didn’t stop there. Rashid turned the interaction into a teachable moment, as he is wont to do, and made a larger statement about head coverings. Using the hashtag #MyAwesomeHat, he showed off some of the religious and secular “hats” he’s worn over the years:

Toddler Pays Tribute To Her Cancer Survivor Grandma In Awesome Photos

Three-year-old Scout Larson has made headlines thanks to her series of adorable photos that show the little girl dressed as as fierce female icons

For her latest shoot, the toddler emulated a special hero in her life: her grandmother, who is a breast cancer survivor.

Scout’s mom, Ashley, told HuffPost that her mother was the initial inspiration behind the famous icons shoot. She wanted to teach Scout about strong, courageous women as her grandmother battled cancer.

“From the beginning, I was planning on making Scout and my mom (”Nonnie”) each a photo book of all the recreated photos we shot,” Ashley told HuffPost. “I felt like it would only make sense to do photos of my mom as well since she’s the inspiration behind the entire project.”

The grandmother was a bit camera shy at first. “My mom is very selfless,” Ashley explained. “Being the center of attention is definitely not her favorite thing.”

Scout, however, loves posing for pictures and helped bring her out of her shell. The toddler particularly loved the matching shirts, which Ashley and her mom made for the grandma-granddaughter photo shoot.

“She had such a blast getting to shoot with her Nonnie,” Ashley said. “She was seriously thrilled to get to match with her.”

Today, Ashley’s mother is doing well. “She’s cancer free and back to doing whatever she feels like doing! Her hair is growing back in beautifully and her strength is coming back,” she said, adding that her mom has one surgery coming up, but they’re ready to face this last step together as a family.

“She’s the toughest lady I know,” Ashley added. “My sister and I are lucky to be a part of her. My babies and my nieces have the best Nonnie in the world.”

Ultimately, Scout’s mom wants people who look at these photos to see that women are fierce and strong.

“My mom, although she was sick, was my rock throughout the entire diagnosis and treatment. Fighting breast cancer, I know she was in pain and she was exhausted, but she never once showed that side to the little people who call her ‘Nonnie,’” Ashley said, adding that the grandmother continued to laugh and play with her grandchildren and took part in a normal Christmas celebration just a few weeks after having a double mastectomy.

“Being a hero doesn’t always mean you’re saving the world,” Ashley said. “Sometimes, just showing up for life and meeting the problems head on is enough.”

”Hot Convict” Jeremy Meeks is making the rounds at the Cannes Film Festival

The model, who was discovered after the Stockton police department posted his mugshot to Facebook, was released from prison in March 2016 and has had a skyrocketing modeling career ever since.

Meeks attended the amfAR gala on Thursday night. Dressed in all black with diamond skulls on his loafers, he smoldered on the red carpet before mingling with stars.

At the gala, Meeks mingled with various guests, including Nicki Minaj and designer Philipp Plein.

Meeks walked at Philipp Plein’s resort 2018 show in Cannes on Wednesday. The model appeared alongside Paris Hilton at the show and spent time time with Carine Roitfeld, the former editor-in-chief of Vogue Paris.

Bella Hadid sure knows how work the sheer look.

All eyes were on the 20-year-old model at amfAR’s 24th Cinema Against AIDS Gala in Cap d’Antibes Thursday during the Cannes Film Festival. She stunned in a completely sheer, embellished custom couture gown by Ralph & Russo (that she reportedly helped design).

(Story continues after the photos.)

We dress confident, empowered women,” designer Michael Russo told People magazine.

The dress took “days” to make, according to an Instagram post by Ralph & Russo. Thirty seamstresses used 13 different materials to embroider the gown.

Wannabe Merman Makes A Big Splash On Beaches Of Rio De Janeiro

When Rio de Janeiro resident Davi Moreira goes to Brazil’s famous Ipanema beach, he always has a splashingly good time.

The 22-year-old is a wannabe merman who loves resting on the rocks by the sea as he wears one of five colorful mermaid tails.

“It’s a lifestyle, a way of expressing my love and respect for the sea and this encounter between two worlds. When I’m in the water I feel like another person,” he told Agence France-Presse as he leisured on rocks with his handmade tail glittering in the sun.

Moreira takes his merman passion very “sea-riously.” Besides sporting a “Little Mermaid” tattoo on his body, his home is chock-full of Ariel-themed memorabilia including cups, shirts, dolls and even a bedcover featuring the red-headed mermaid.

Merman Moreira attracts waves of attention from fellow mermaid “afish-cianados,” but also some insults from a few crabs.

“People laugh at me because I am different, but I laugh back because they are all the same,” he said. “I’m not trying to escape reality. I know perfectly well how to deal with adult life. But this makes me happy and I’m not causing anyone any harm.”

Moreira’s lifestyle choice gets approval from at least one slightly envious local, an elderly woman in the video above.

“I think that if I would have had a fancy dress like that when I was a child, it would have been a dream,” she said.

Newly Single Leonardo DiCaprio Surrounded By A Bevy Of Models In Cannes

Looks like Leonardo DiCaprio is doing just fine after that breakup.

The newly single actor, who split with his model girlfriend Nina Agdal earlier this month, was spotted in Cannes on Thursday at the amfAR Gala, surrounded by a bevy of beautiful women including Bella Hadid and Rita Ora. DiCaprio is known for his penchant for models, having previously dated Gisele Bundchen, Bar Refaeli, Erin Heatherton, Toni Garrn and Kelly Rohrbach, so these photos are, shall we say, priceless.

DiCaprio and Agdal dated for over a year before their split was announced last week. Shortly after the reveal, the actor was spotted with friend and fellow bachelor Tobey Maguire at LA hotspots The Peppermint Club and Avenue LA. Maguire was also in attendance at the amfAR event in France’s Hotel du Cap-Eden-Roc. He was photographed onstage with Chris Tucker, Uma Thurman, Will Smith and Jessica Chastain during the soiree.

We can imagine Tobey sending Leo a text about letting loose in Cannes, to which Leo responds: You mean tonight, Boo Boo? Club-wise?

Head over to the Daily Mail to see more photos of DiCaprio in his element.

Barack Obama Couldn't Look Happier Hanging Out With Prince Harry

While most of us were getting our grill on this past Memorial Day weekend, two of the world’s most popular figures were also hanging out.

Prince Harry hosted world traveler and former POTUS Barack Obama at Kensington Palace on Saturday. The two were photographed together wearing nearly identical suit jackets and white collared shirts, a look Obama has perfected post-presidency.

Though the two were all smiles in their photo together, Prince Harry and Obama spoke about serious topics, according to the official Kensington Palace Twitter account.

“They discussed support for veterans, mental health, conservation, empowering young people and the work of their respective foundations,” the tweets said. “@BarackObama also offered his condolences to the victims of the Manchester attack and support for those recovering from injuries.”

The two have met a few times over the past couple of years and it’s clear they enjoy each other’s company:

Last year, the Obamas collaborated on a cheeky video for Prince Harry’s foundation, called the Invictus Games. The queen herself even let out a little trash talking!

Pamela Anderson Jumps Into The Ocean Wearing A Gown, Because Of Course

Pamela Anderson’s fashion evolution just keeps getting better.

Over the weekend, the 49-year-old actress and model stepped out in a dazzling dress with sheer cutouts to celebrate a club opening in Marbella, Spain.

Anderson wore her blonde hair down with a bright red lip, drawing everyone’s attention to her sparkly dress.

At a certain point in the night, the actress and her friend, Maria Bravo, jumped into the ocean for reasons unknown:

But it looks like Anderson made it back to the party. Aside from her wet hair, her makeup (and dress!) looked unbothered:

Over the past month Anderson has made appearances all over the world. A few weeks ago she stopped by the Cannes Film Festival before jetting to Monaco for a fashion show. She’s also been traveling to London a lot recently to visit her rumored boyfriend, Wikileaks founder Julian Assange

“Let’s see what happens when he’s free,” Anderson said of Assange in a recent interview on a Swedish television talk show. “But you know I spend probably more time with him than any other man socially, which is very odd.”

Viral Hair Tie Trick Helps Stressed-Out Parents Stay Sane

Calling all stressed-out parents trying to keep it together! This hair tie trick may be perfect for you.

On May 16, a mom named Shuana Harvey shared a technique that helped her “exercise patience with [her] oh so testy 4-year-old” on Facebook.

“I wore 5 rubber bands on my wrist from the time I got up, to the time I tucked him in just now. The 5 rubber bands represent every time you lose your cool or say something unkind to your child,” Harvey explained. “Every time that happens, you move one band to the other wrist. To ‘gain the band back,’ you must do 5 kind/positive things with your child (dance party, singing a song together, reading together, etc).”

The mom said she plans to use this hair tie trick until it becomes a second nature.

“I’ve found myself so incredibly stressed out, I beat my head against the wall daily because I don’t understand why my 4 year old insists on being disrespectful and a non listener,” she wrote. “I was to the point of crying at least every other day.”

After finishing the day with all five hair ties on the original wrist, Harvey said she felt proud of herself for keeping her cool. “I know it’s only day one, but I’m hopeful this will help our communication skills and our relationship,” she concluded. “If you find yourself being that ‘Angry Mom,’ try this!”

The Facebook post was shared over 11,500 times. Following the viral response, Harvey updated her post to note that she found this trick from blogger Kelly Holmes of “The (Reformed) Idealist Mom.”

In Holmes’ original blog post, “The Hair Tie Trick That Will Make You Go from Angry Mom to Happy Mom,” she shares her personal experience and also offers a “cheat sheet” for parents looking to implement her idea.

After seeing Harvey’s viral post spread throughout social media, the blogger wrote on Facebook, “Every time I see the original post featured somewhere new, I think of how many more parents and kids are feeling connected and having more FUN together because of this little trick.”

Where Have All The Shopping Montages Gone?

$
0
0

If you have not seen the opening sequence of 2009’s “Confessions of a Shopaholic,” please do so now. It is one of the most delightfully absurdist depictions of what NYC aspirants think the city is like, complete with potential meet-cutes, a Gucci namedrop, and blacking out from bliss due to a rhinestone-encrusted egg purse in a store window. It is the most shopping montage-iest of shopping montages that portray glossy-haired white women spending their way into better selves. It’s also, as far as I can tell, the last of them.

Shopping montages, those quick-cut scenes showing women gleefully trying on clothes or skipping through the mall, are such a go-to film convention, you could probably rattle off five without resorting to Google. There’s “Pretty Woman,” “Marie Antoinette,” “Drive Me Crazy,” “Mean Girls,” “Gossip Girl,” “Clueless,” “What Women Want,” and nearly every single episode of “Sex and the City” or Olsen twins movie. According to Helen Warner, PhD, media studies lecturer at the University of East Anglia, shopping montages became so ubiquitous for obvious reasons: “Sometimes it was to further the story or to develop character, and sometimes it was just for the pleasure of the spectacle. Their popularity in the ‘80s, ‘90s, and 2000s has to do with the economic and industrial conditions — fashion houses started to expand their publicity departments and open branches in the West Coast, allowing retailers to forge relationships with Hollywood.”

But in recent years, there’s been a surprising lack of them, even in the kinds of TV shows and movies with spunky female leads looking to make a life transformation, which so obviously lend themselves to having a shopping montage (see: “Girls,” “Insecure,” “How To Be Single”). But the reason we don’t see these scenes set in malls and stores anymore has less to do with producers’ distaste for clichés, and more to do with the fact that “going shopping” is no longer a relevant pastime. It’d be as incongruous as watching Olivia Pope run into a phone booth to place a call. It’s a once-commonplace habit to which young people no longer relate.

It’s a once-commonplace habit to which young people no longer relate.

To be fair, few of us ever “went shopping” like they did in the movies to begin with. Where exactly are these boutiques where shopping associates delicately present you with a garment as if it were a newborn baby? Has anyone other than actresses danced in front of their boyfriend, husband, or dad after trying on an item? Have you ever shopped while wearing a freakum dress and stilettos, and walked around with your arms in a perpetual shruggie pose, because that was the most convenient way to carry your bags? (FWIW, women laughing while holding shopping bags is the original women laughing with salad.) Of course not, but these scenes were meant to be over-the-top, gratuitous, and indulgent — that’s what made them fun. It was also reassuring: “See? Becoming a whole new person is so delightful. You, too, can reinvent yourself with a high credit limit and strong biceps!”

But going shopping as a pastime definitely existed. In 2006, 94 percent of malls were considered “healthy,” with lots of foot traffic and few vacant spaces, compared to 80 percent in 2015, according to data providers CoStar. A 2013 Nielson study found that though Americans spent $2.4 trillion at shopping centers in 2012, older customers preferred the in-person experience more than younger ones. It’s a no-brainer that movies geared toward teens would reflect the most relevant retail habits, and these days, going on Amazon for a shopping spree is way more likely than playing dress-up at a department store.

When actual in-store shopping montages are used, it’s to skewer the cliché, not luxuriate in it. “Shows like “Broad City and “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt” flip conventions on its head by adding a dark element or making fun of it — you can’t take it at face value,” says New York magazine film critic Emily Yoshida. “We grew up with shopping montages as children — now we have life experience that tells us, ‘This is not how it is.’” Take a recent episode of teen drama “Riverdale”: For her shopping binge, style queen Veronica Lodge turns to Glamazon.com for retail therapy. That’s young people’s “warm butter sliding down hot toast” moment.

On “Broad City”, 25-year-old Abbi walks into a dressing room with an armful of clothes in a clear spoof of the cliché: “First one’s fine,” she shrugs, before balking at the price-tag at the register. On the other side of the same coin are the shopping scenes as depicted in “Kimmy Schmidt.” The first thing that the stunted Kimmy does once she’s freed from her underground bunker is go on a shopping trip for adult-sized light-up tennis shoes and shark gummies (while also trying out electric hand dryers and riding the subway) — gleefully indulging in the kind of mundanity that only a person who’s been sheltered for the past two decades can muster enthusiasm for.

This lack of in-store shopping in film is reflected in the numbers of real shoppers in real stores. There has been a huge rash of store closures — WWD found that in 2017 alone, national retailers have closed over 1,000 locations. Malls have struggled to maintain foot traffic since the late 2000s; “dead malls” are enough of a thing to have warranted a viral video project. Black Friday, which historically attracts more shoppers and brings in more money than any other day of the year, drew fewer shoppers to actual stores than online sales last year. Shopping, in general, has stagnated, despite a healthy economy, cheap gas prices, and low unemployment — factors that generally stimulate consumer spending.

It might be that we’re all still operating under post-recession austerity. Dr. Warner points out that economic downturns affect depictions of conspicuous consumption. “After the Great Depression, there were definitely concerns from those working within the film industry that film and fashion tie-ins were a bit crass. There is something specific about the 2008 recession and the rise of digital and mobile media that have together caused problems for the relationship between fashion and film and TV.” Showing characters on Gossip Girl coming out of Cartier with red shopping bags might have felt escapist in 2007, but by 2009, such a gratuitous display of spending would’ve been a turnoff when most people were tightening their budgets. Today, the economy is healthy. Unemployment is at the lowest it’s been in 10 years, but consumers are still wary. “The recession is over but it’s not been forgotten,” says Warner. “It’s had a residual effect on consumption practices.”

Reality TV shows, too, which make small-screen drama out of everyday social pastimes, like grabbing coffee and getting manicures, rarely showcase shopping anymore. “You don’t even see it on something like the Real Housewives or the Kardashians — probably because of location permits,” Yoshida says. “They make one trip at a time to buy something that gets a decent chunk of screen time, because of a placement deal with XYZ celebrity jeweler in Beverly Hills.” Just this last season, one of the central plotlines on “Keeping Up With the Kardashians” was the fate of DASH, the sisters’ chain of boutiques that the series was originally intended to promote. After operating for 10 years, they closed one of the three locations.

Looking beyond recession mentality, the rise of e-commerce, and the closure of malls, shopping montages might simply be over because we’ve just moved on. “Maybe there’s not a need for a sequence that expresses female growth via consumerism, because we’ve come a ways in showing female self-improvement in films that isn’t just about the exterior,” says Yoshida. And it’s true that you still see other (somewhat clichéd) transformation-centric montages: Jennifer Lawrence learning survival skills in “Hunger Games,” Rachel McAdams grinding to report out a newspaper exposé in “Spotlight,” Issa Rae pumping herself up in the mirror for an evening out in “Insecure.”

Shopping montages are dead because going shopping as a pastime is dead. But stories of transformation, growth, and the fulfillment of one’s destiny will never get stale — we just don’t need dressing rooms to tell them anymore.

People Are Not Happy About This Body-Shaming Snow White Movie

$

0

Stories about women in entertainment dominated the 2017 Cannes Film Festival news cycle, as Sofia Coppola became the second woman to win the award for best director, and jury member Jessica Chastain spoke out about the “disturbing” depictions of women in cinema.

Chastain’s choice of adjective could certainly apply to the marketing campaign for an upcoming animated film that many spotted at the festival.

Journalists at Cannes tweeted photos of a billboard for “Red Shoes and the 7 Dwarfs” ― a Snow White parody that will reportedly star Chloe Grace Moretz.

The ad shows the tall, thin heroine wearing red high-heeled shoes next to a shorter, heavier version of herself ― barefoot and holding the shoes.

“What if Snow White was no longer beautiful and the 7 Dwarfs not so short?” the tagline asks.

The suggestion that a shorter, rounder Snow White is “no longer beautiful” attracted the ire of many parents with young kids.

On Tuesday, model and mom of two Tess Holliday tweeted a photo of the billboard at Moretz. “How did this get approved by an entire marketing team?” she wrote. “Why is it okay to tell young kids being fat = ugly?”

Many people shared their outrage in the HuffPost Parents’ “So You Want To Raise A Feminist” Facebook group. “What the hell??? So because she’s not a complete waif but actually normal size, she is no longer beautiful?!?! No way on this movie!!” wrote one parent.

“My kids will never see this,” added another.

“If it’s a kids movie it’s horrendous,” another mom commented.

“Red Shoes and the 7 Dwarfs” is a product of South Korea’s Locus Creative Studios. The company’s website describes it as a family-friendly film and outlines the plot: “After seven handsome princes are magically transformed into seven ugly dwarfs, they set out on a quest to break the curse by getting a kiss from the most beautiful princess in all the land.” According to IMDB, the movie is “a parody with a twist.”

While Snow White is a German fairy tale famously published by the Brothers Grimm, the “Red Shoes” in the working title is likely a reference to Hans Christian Andersen’s fairy tale, “The Red Shoes” ― which tells the story of a girl with enchanted red shoes (though the magical shoes in that fairy tale have a slightly more sinister effect than simply making one’s appearance conform to societal standards of beauty).

The Lotus website suggests the movie has a slightly more empowering message ― apparently the princess character is on a journey to find her lost father and learns “not only to accept herself, but to celebrate who she is, inside and out. And to let the beauty within ... shine brighter than anyone else in the land.”

Still, the decision to describe the “normal” Snow White as ugly in the marketing campaign is questionable at best. The “family-friendly” designation is also questionable, as early trailers for “Red Shoes and the 7 Dwarfs” don’t seem particularly appropriate for children. One trailer shows two male dwarf characters secretly watching the heroine undress, while another shows a dwarf looking lustfully at her sleeping figure and then proceeding to violently thrash her body around in an attempt to remove her shoes.

“Red Shoes and the 7 Dwarfs” was previously scheduled for a summer 2017 release. Earlier this month, The Hollywood Reporter announced that Moretz was set to add her voice to the movie and that South Korean sales company Finecut would be introducing the film to buyers at the Cannes Film Festival.

The current status of the film is not entirely clear, though the billboard at Cannes states “2018 Coming Soon.”

Locus Creative Studios did not immediately respond to HuffPost’s request for comment.

How To Reapply Your Sunscreen While Wearing Makeup

$

For Allure, by Sarah Kinonen.

We all know how important it is to slather on sunscreen every day (quick refresher: it’s like, really important. A few dollops a day can potentially shield skin from damage brought on by the sun’s powerful UV rays). But did you know that reapplying your SPF is just — if not more — crucial? Yep. According to dermatologists, you should be re-administering your SPF every two to three hours, which means that full face beat you put together early in the A.M. may get a little disheveled after the second slathering. Luckily, it doesn’t have to be that way. Turns out, there are foolproof techniques to reapply your sun protection without smudging or smearing your early-morning makeup masterpiece. Here, the top six tricks, plucked from top dermatologists and makeup artists.

Start strong: Apply sunscreen under your makeup.

Before you kickstart your makeup routine, prep your skin with protection — and not just in the major areas of your face, like the cheeks and forehead, says Heidi Waldorf, director of laser and cosmetic dermatology at the Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City. “One of the reasons that the top of the forehead — near the hairline and the sides of the cheeks, jawline, and neck — get more sun is because everyone starts their sunscreen [application] in the middle of the face and neck,” Waldorf says. “Be sure to apply — and reapply — to those areas. Extra sun damage tends to occur on the upper cheek bones, too.”

Or, try a moisturizer with built-in SPF.

If your skin is on the sensitive side, streamline your product lineup with a multitasking moisturizer — but only sometimes. “In the cooler months, it’s acceptable to “cheat” [your sunscreen game] by using a moisturizer with a sunscreen in it instead of two separate products,” says Elizabeth Tanzi, founder and director of Capital Laser & Skin Care and associate clinical professor, Department of Dermatology at the George Washington University Medical Center. “When products are asked to multi-task, make sure you are using enough of the product in order to get the SPF on the label.”

Even better, make it a tinted moisturizer with SPF.

Swap out your heavy foundation for a lighter formula, like a BB cream — but with a hint of tint and added SPF. “If you invest the time to find the perfect match for your skin, you are much more likely to use the two products every day, which is a major investment in the long-term health and beauty of the skin,” says Tanzi.

Finish your look with a setting spray — packed with sunscreen.

Celebrity makeup artist Mai Quynh sets her clients’ red-carpet looks with setting sprays that offer built-in sun protection. “They’re clear, so there’s no white film, and they go on lightly as a fine mist,” she says. Her favorite? The just-launched Kate Somerville UncompliKated SPF 50, which can be spritzed on before, during, and after makeup application. It’s also made with hyaluronic acid to hydrate as it shields skin from the sun.

Brush it on.

If you don’t want to mess, smudge, or smear your makeup during a mid-day SPF touchup, Quynh recommends sweeping on a powder sunscreen to the face. “The powders can be in a loose powder or a pressed powder form,” says Quynh. For a loose powder formula with water-resistant protection, we (along with Tanzi and Waldorf) recommend Colorescience Sunforgettable Very Water Resistant Powder Sun Protection SPF 30. “The loose powder is easy to use, you can just brush it on directly to the face, as the powder is built into the brush.”

Adds Tanzi: “These are the absolute purest form of powder sunscreen with colors that blend with all skin tones. The [sunscreen powder] is an excellent, water-resistant formula that looks like photo-perfect makeup, but is actually a great sunscreen. The powder locks my makeup in place, cuts down on facial oil on a humid day, and provides excellent sun protection.”

Touch it up with a compact.

If you’re not big on powders — whether it’s a texture thing or you worry about handbag spillage — we’ve found a happy medium. The Eau Thermale Avène Mineral High Protection Tinted Compact SPF 50, which comes in two different shades. “It allows you to touch up your makeup and [apply sunscreen] at the same time,” says Waldorf. “It’s great to keep in your purse, desk, or even car for touchups.”

Ariel Winter: 'This Is The Body I Was Given. This Is Who I Am.'

Ariel Winter isn’t about that unrealistic “beach body” ideal.

The 19-year-old actress recently sat down with Refinery29 to discuss her role as Alex on “Modern Family,” how she’s dealt with critics in her rise to fame and her journey to self-acceptance and body love. The interview is part of R29’s new Take Back The Beach series, which debunks the dreaded notion that a woman needs a “beach body” (i.e. a thin body that conforms to often unachieavable standards of standards of beauty) in order to happily wear swimsuits in the summer.

Winter told R29 that loving your body all the time is hard work and that’s OK; the beach “should be a safe space” either way, she said.

“It’s hard to be positive about your body all the time,” she said. “I know because I’m honest about my insecurities that people think I’m 100 percent positive about my body all the time, but I’m not. I get really uncomfortable, too. But I just remind myself that this is the body I was given. This is who I am.”

Happy #MemorialDay

A post shared by ARIEL WINTER (@arielwinter) on

The “Modern Family” actress also spoke about body positivity in the context of the Trump administration. President Trump is notorious for objectifying women: He fat-shamed a former Miss Universe and called her “Miss Piggy;” he said that a woman must be attractive in order to be a journalist; and he’s also openly fat-shamed and criticized multiple famous women for their looks and weight.

“Our leadership is really anti-women right now,” Winter told R29. “Thanks to Donald Trump, we’re being objectified and made to feel bad about ourselves, so I think it’s really important for women to stick together and do the opposite of that; to let their bodies be seen and be heard, and to empower each other; to remind each other that what they look like is not the only thing that’s important when it comes to who they are.”

And unfortunately, the young actress knows all too well what it’s like to be objectified by critics. Winter has been the target of relentless body-shaming, whether it’s about wearing revealing dresses or her breast reduction scars.

Winter told R29 that her 2015 breast reduction surgery helped her feel more comfortable in her skin.

“When I got the breast reduction it helped me feel so much better about my body. I used to have full-scale meltdowns in bathing suit shops because there was nothing I could find to wear. I always felt like crap about myself,” she told R29. “... My best friend, she’s super tall and skinny and she’ll wear the same bathing suit as me, but people will automatically look at me and call me out as a slut or write headlines about ‘Ariel Winter’s cleavage.’ Meanwhile they look at her like, ‘Oh she looks so cute!’ But I’ve learned to not care about that as much. I’m comfortable in a bathing suit, scars and all.”

These Shoes Are Changing The Lives Of Single Mothers And Seniors In Colombia

Soles for Change knows the right pair of shoes can help someone go far.

The artisanal shoe company’s main mission is to benefit the Colombian artisans, mostly single mothers and seniors, who handcraft the colorful espadrilles it sells online.

Laura Viveros co-founded the company in March 2016 after traveling to her native Colombia for a family Christmas trip. During their visit to the small, picturesque town of Curiti, in the department of Santander, the financial advisor tried on some of the local artisans’ espadrille flats in the hopes of giving her sore feet some relief.

The 33-year-old says her feet immediately felt better in the handmade shoes and she began to wear them everywhere. Viveros raved about the shoes to her cousins and friends.

She and her husband, Juan Carlos Rodriguez, then began brainstorming ideas with her brother Juan Camilo Viveros and his wife, Carolina Gutierrez, about how to help the artisans’ business in a sustainable way.

“I want[ed] to support these artisans because what they do is such an art,” Viveros told HuffPost. “They needed someone who believed in them. They needed someone who could show the world what they proudly do with their own hands while incorporating ancient weaving techniques.”

That’s when the foursome decided to start Soles for Change.

“Their work is truly amazing,” she added, in reference to the artisans. “Given the social inequality in my country, they had no one who was capable of helping them out and show[ing] their products in the international markets. I met them and they have truly changed my life.”

The artisans craft each shoe from the natural fibers that come from the fique plant in Colombia. They produce the raw material, treat it, dye it and then weave it into the espadrilles. The shoes are sent to the Colombian capital, Bogotá, for quality control and then Soles for Change ships it to a U.S. distribution center in Miami Beach, Florida, or Queens, New York.

The handmade espadrilles are sold on the Soles for Change website or at pop-up shops from $37 to $45 a pair, and 25 percent of the profits are “re-invested” in the artisans and their day-to-day life.

“We strive to contribute to the improvement of their quality of life,” Viveros told HuffPost. “We want to buy them new machines for faster production as well as [facilitate] better education in the art of shoe making. Also, every year we fulfill a dream. This year our plan is to take them all to see the ocean for the first time.”

Last year, the artisans voted to travel outside their small town, many for the first time, and Soles for Change paid for a trip to the thermal hot springs in Paipa, Colombia.

“This company is about them,” Viveros said. “It makes me so proud to see them work representing our brand. Giving us ideas about new materials and new designs. They know now this project is for them and by them.”

Viveros says Soles for Change has been life changing for many of the artisans simply because it provides them with a steady income.

“Before they had to rely only on the local market to sell their shoes and bring food to the table,” she said. “With Soles for Change they know they have a more stable source of income as we will purchase their production no matter what.”

Both Viveros and her husband have careers apart from Soles for Change. She works as a vice president investment counsellor for HSBC Private Bank USA while Rodriguez is a project director for Emovis Technologies. Both moved to New York City last year after many years living in Miami, where they first launched the shoe retail brand.

Despite their other responsibilities, the couple and their business partners hope to expand Soles for Change.

“We have had thousands of emails from people like us who want to make a difference in their countries and want to make a program similar to ours,” Viveros said. “We started in Colombia but our plan is to replicate this model all around Latin America.”

Powerful Hashtag Highlights The Body-Shaming Comments Women Hear In A Lifetime

Most women don’t forget the very first time they were body-shamed.

Founder and CEO of the athletic wear company Oiselle Sally Bergesen definitely remembers one of the first times she was body-shamed. “’Keep eating like that and you’re going to be a butterball.’ My Dad when I was 12,” Bergesen tweeted on May 25.

In the same tweet, Bergesen asked followers to share their personal stories of being body-shamed with the hashtag #TheySaid.

The hashtag quickly gained momentum with hundreds of Twitter users sharing their body-shaming experiences. Some women shared stories of family members commenting on their weight gain, while others shared being body-shamed for being too skinny.

Scroll below to read some of the #TheySaid tweets. (Story continues below.)

An hour after Bergesen tweeted the #TheySaid hashtag, she created a new one: #SheReplied. The new hashtag was meant as a way to share responses to the body-shaming comments women experienced.

“To be honest, those types of comments have been shown to be really harmful to me and others,” Bergesen tweeted as an example.

(Story continues below.)

Soon enough, more Twitter users started replying to the #SheReplied hashtag with their own awesome response to body-shaming comments.

“All bodies are amazing! Too bad your attitude isn’t!” one user tweeted.

Another Twitter user’s response touched on why it’s so important to not blindly congratulate people for being skinny: “Skinny isn’t always healthy. Please ask me if I’m OK,” she tweeted.

This Woman Shared A Video Of Herself 'Jiggling For Joy' For The Best Reason

Kate Speer wanted to let out a little jiggle ― so she did.

On May 24, the body positive and mental health advocate posted a video on Instagram which shows herself dancing around ― or as she calls it in the video “jiggling for joy” ― in a bikini and a neon visor.

“Woooo! It’s hump day and I’m doing a jiggle for joy!” Speer yells as she jumps into frame. “This is your weekly reminder that... you are fabulous.”

In the caption, Speer wrote:

I’ve been struggling with my beautiful bod this week (and note, I know I have a thin-privileged, able-privileged, beautiful bod even if I can’t always feel it to be so) and beating it up in my mind and trying to suffocate it with binging.

So, today, I’m posting this even though it is terrifying me to do so (yup, deleted it 7 times).

... My body is MORE than its appearance. My body is NOT my value. My body is simply the vessel for my god damn fabulous self. And no matter what my emotional mind thinks or others say, MY BODY IS PERFECT. MY BODY IS WHOLE. MY BODY IS BEAUTIFUL. AND, MY BODY - IN ITS ENTIRETY- IS WORTHY OF LOVE.

According to Speer’s personal website, she survived a misdiagnosis of bipolar disorder at age 21 and has been in and out of psychiatric hospitals. She’s struggled with self-harm, suicide, PTSD and an eating disorder her entire life.

“I am here to dance away my PTSD demons, find light in the darkness and celebrate it all no matter if it makes sense or not,” Speer wrote on her website. “Mostly, I am here to love, get silly, find gratitude and spread as much light as I can while still on this planet I have the privilege to call home.”

One honeymoon location just isn’t enough for Pippa Middleton and her new husband, James Matthews.

The two jetted off to Tetiaroa, French Polynesia ― one of Obama’s recent vacation spots ― after their wedding last weekend. Apparently they’ve had their fill of South Pacific sun, as Middleton and Matthews were recently spotted in Sydney, Australia.

On Wednesday, Middleton and her hubby climbed the famous Sydney Harbour Bridge at night. The bridge offers 360-degree views of Sydney and stands about 440 feet in the air.

The night climb costs around $253 - $388 for adults and can take up to 3.5 hours to complete.

The couple is staying at the Park Hyatt Hotel in Sydney, which offers views of the Sydney Harbour and the Sydney Opera House, according to a press release.

So far, they’ve explored the city by way of a water taxi and a sea plane. The two recently flew a seaplane to lunch at the Cottage Point Inn, which looks like a cute spot for the newlyweds:

Instagram's Latest Colorful Move For LGBTQ People Is A Must-See

Instagram is kicking Pride month off with a colorful new initiative that aims to encourage support for queer people around the world.

On Wednesday, the app transformed the all-pink, oft-photographed facade of Paul Smith’s Los Angeles store into the first of its five “rainbow walls.” The wall was unveiled by Mayor Eric Garcetti at an evening ceremony that was attended by Instagram influencers Justin BlakeRaymond Braun and Jacob Tobia, along with other members of the city’s LGBTQ community.

The walls, which will also debut in London, Madrid, Nashville and Cleveland later in June, will each be emblazoned with the #KindComments hashtag so that visitors can use the photo-sharing app to find a “community of support” nearby, according to Instagram’s Chief Operating Officer Marne Levine.

The company’s mission, Levine said, is “to strengthen relationships through shared experiences,” and the “rainbow wall” initiative is one of many similar efforts that aim to do just that. “Every day we see members of our community coming to Instagram to share their passions and experiences,” she told HuffPost. “We are extremely proud of our whole community, but we’re especially excited about the way people are using Instagram to spread kindness and compassion for one another.”

#kindcomments thank you Instagram and the city of LA for having me this was so cool #Pride #LGBT

A post shared by Justin Blake (@justinblake) on

Levine said she was personally moved by Blake, Tobia and other Instagram users who’ve found unique ways to share coming out stories and other personal experiences on the app.

“We’ve seen how images create empathy, bring people closer and promote understanding,” she said. “For Pride, we hope the rainbow walls become physical structures that inspire kind comments and support for Pride, but equally create an opportunity for people to come together on Instagram to support the LGBTQ community.”

Adriana Lima Proclaims She's Married To Herself

Supermodel and Victoria’s Secret Angel Adriana Lima doesn’t need another significant other in her life. She’s married to herself.

The 35-year-old announced the news on Instagram recently after outlets noticed a new diamond band on her hand at the Grand Prix in Monaco.

“Whats up with the ring? Its symbolic, I am committed to myself and my own happiness I am married with me,” Lima captioned the Instagram post. “Ladies love yourself and yes I am single.”

A post shared by Adriana Lima (@adrianalima) on

Even though she’s technically single (Lima recently split from her Super Bowl-winning beau, Julian Edelman, and then briefly dated Mets pitcher Matt Harvey), some people actually do marry themselves. It’s called “sologomy.”

“I think it’s increased over the years, and it’s something that’s becoming more understood and more accepted,” Jeffrey Levin, who runs the website IMarriedMe.com, recently told WUSA9 news.

On Levin’s site, people can purchase “wedding in a box” kits that range from $50-$230. The kit comes with a ring, ceremony instructions, vows and affirmation cards.

In 2015, a woman named Yasmin Eleby married herself to celebrate her 40th birthday. Surrounded by friends and family, Eleby had 10 bridesmaids by her side when she was married by her sister (self-marriage doesn’t involve a legal process).

“I’d been saying a few years that if I hadn’t gotten married by the time I was 40, I’d just have a wedding by myself,” Eleby told ABC News in an interview. “I decided I didn’t want it to be a joke. I wanted to have a celebration of myself. My wedding was going to be about me making a commitment to love myself, to honor myself and to know my self-worth.”

A post shared by Baller Alert (@balleralert) on

Brooklyn resident Erika Anderson married herself last year in front of friends. She wore a wedding dress, wrote her own vows and even made a registry.

“It wasn’t an easy decision,” she wrote on her wedding invitations, according to Cosmo. “I had cold feet for 35 years. But then I decided it was time to settle down. To get myself a whole damn apartment. To celebrate birthday #36 by wearing an engagement ring and saying: YES TO ME. I even made a registry, because this is America.”
