80-Pound Wedding Dresses Bedazzled In Jewels? This Gypsy Designer Has Seen It All

$

0
Dressmaker Sondra Celli, now going into her third season with the hit TLC show "My Big Fat American Gypsy Wedding," stopped by the HuffPost Live studios on Monday to talk crystal wedding gowns, blinged-out toiled paper and 80-pound wedding dresses.

Celli, who lives by the motto, "It don't mean a thing if it ain't got that bling," makes wedding dresses that are NOT for the weak at heart. Now in her 30th year of designing gypsy dresses, Celli has a team of 16 girls that work around the clock "rhinestoning all the time." And like her gypsy dressmaker extraordinaire profile declares, "whoever has the most rhinestones wins."

sondra celli

The designer makes her wedding dresses like almost any other custom designer would start out -- going over ideas with the bride-to-be, picking out a silhouette and running with the design from there. The only time customers have ever "cussed her out" or gotten upset with the dress is when there aren't enough crystals.

sondra celli

The reasoning behind the complaint, Celli explains, is that "status come with bling" and gypsies are able to express their social position through materialism. "It's a way that they show they have more money than someone." If that's the case, then girls with light-up wedding dresses also covered in fur and crystals must certainly be considered queen of something?

When she's not working on a ginormous gown, work at Celli's studio can involve anything from bedazzling baby shoes (heels included) and pacifiers to pots and pans and the occasional ceiling fan. The most ridiculous thing Celli admits to rhinestoning is toilet paper, and she says she told the client, "if you're going to flush your money down the drain, I'll absolutely take it."

We almost didn't recognize Miley Cyrus with so many clothes on!

The 21-year-old is Elle magazine's May cover star, and aside from that sweet, sparkly Marc Jacobs outfit she has on, what caught our attention throughout the entire shoot was how serious she looks.

Inside the mag, she talks about everything from Disney to how she connects with her fans, and even though she looks amazing in pieces by Saint Laurent and Christian Louboutin (and we appreciate her keeping her tongue in her mouth) we have to admit we would have liked to see a smile or two.

Perhaps Miley would like to be taken more seriously now that she's the star of Jacobs' Spring 2014 campaign? Pick up Elle's May issue, which hits newsstands April 22 to read the whole interview, and check out the shoot below.

DIY Stenciled Spring Pop Art Blazer

2014-03-19-StenciledBlazer_unedited_featured_2_x.jpg

Spring-ify your work blazer a la pop art! Get an Andy Warhol-esque, screen printed look using a stencil from the craft store and an old blazer. I had this hunter green blazer in my closet that was begging for some sprucing so I went mod mad with some white paint and a 1960's inspired, daisy print stencil.

I love how it turned out and now me and my old green blazer are trail BLAZing the streets!

Watch the video tutorial above to see the entire how-to. Comment if you have any questions!

2014-03-19-stenciledblazer_x.jpg

Prep It:

  • Stencil(s) of your choice

  • Fabric paint

  • Foam spouncers

  • Paper plate

  • A blazer -- or whatever article of clothing you'd like to stencil

2014-03-19-stenciledblazer13x.jpg

DO IT!:

  1. Lay your blazer on a paint-safe surface and pour some paint in a paper plate.

  2. Place the stencil where you want the design and use the foam spouncer in a vertical blotting motion over the stencil, depositing the paint in the negative space areas onto the fabric below. Note: if you want a cleaner less pop art look than I did you should tape off the area you want stenciled or just paint more slowly and deliberately... I just went crazy!

  3. Contine step 2 until you have your whole back and arms of the blazer covered and let dry.

  4. Turn over and repeat on the front of your blazer -- I chose to just do the lapels and pockets on the front.

  5. Let dry and pop art your butt to a fun partay!

Mindy Kaling Misses The Days When Two-Hour Make Out Sessions Were Okay

Mindy Kaling is living vicariously through the character she plays and created on "The Mindy Project."

During her appearance on "Chelsea Lately" on April 7, the 34-year-old made it clear that she's not drawing from experience when she writes about the various hookups her character Dr. Mindy Lahiri has each week.

"I have that personality where I was such a nerd -- I am such a nerd -- that I can only enjoy those situations looking out inside. I'd be dead if I lived the life of my character," Kaling said when asked by host Chelsea Handler if the reason her character has so much sex is because she wants to talk about it. "She drinks and dates like a party animal. She's like Lindsay Lohan's sex life, but she's a doctor. It's a TV show -- that's why it works like that -- but it's kind of fun because I don't live that life."

Kaling says she's much less adventurous than her on-screen counterpart, telling Handler that her idea of a wild night is drinking an inch of whiskey and watching 15 minutes of "The Walking Dead" before she passes out.

And when it comes to her romantic endeavors, Kaling would prefer things didn't go beyond first base.

"The problem with kissing, when you're older than 16, you can't kiss a guy for like two hours, which is like what I would want to do, because at a certain point, they're like, 'What is this leading to?'" she told Handler. "And I'm like, 'That's it!'"

She continued, "I could kiss a guy for 90 minutes and be like, 'That was great!'"

Veet Wants To Shame You Into Removing Your Body Hair, Lest You Become A 'Dude'

$
0
0
If Veet is to be believed, there's nothing more terrifying to a straight dude than touching a moderately hairy leg.

The hair removal brand has come out with a new ad campaign, which, in an amazing confluence of lazy sexism, mild homophobia and general lack of creativity, warns women not to "risk dudeness" with their prickly, hairy legs. (Oh, the horror of a post-shave stubble!)

The spots, which are all up on YouTube, feature a beautiful woman who spontaneously turns into a hairy man while: (1) waking up in bed with her boyfriend, (2) getting a pedicure, (3) hailing a taxi and (4) receiving emergency medical care. In every situation, those around said woman -- from her significant other to her would-be cab driver -- are horrified to discover that she has body hair.

Here are a few of the natural (albeit insanely problematic) conclusions one reaches from watching Veet's ads:
  • Having any body hair automatically makes you a man.

  • Removing said body hair automatically makes you a woman.

  • If you don't remove your body hair each and every day, you will look like Zach Galifianakis.

  • Straight dudes are very, very scared of leg hair.

  • A taxi driver will probably refuse to give you a ride if you have body hair.

  • Dudes waking up in bed with other dudes is gross and/or fodder for bad comedy.

  • Your pedicurist reserves the right to openly ridicule you if you have leg hair.

  • There's nothing more hilarious than a man in a dress.

  • You should probably resist emergency medical care if you have hairy legs.

  • Body hair is something all women should be ashamed of, unless they want their gender card revoked.

As Roo Ciambriello at AdWeek put it: "Telling women that they're less womanly if they miss a spot shaving their legs in the shower, or if they're part of an entire sect of women who choose not to shave at all, is closed-minded. And shame is a weird marketing tool."

So, Veet, we will not be ashamed that adult women grow body hair. We will shave or not shave or wax or not wax or chemically remove or not chemically remove whatever patches of that hair we choose. And for the love of all things good, please stop trying to shame us into buying terrible-smelling, root-destroying cream.

Peter Som Talks His New Kohl's Collection, St. Barths And How He Always Has FLOTUS In Mind

When we think of Peter Som, we immediately think of beautiful, elegant clothing and admittedly, Michelle Obama. And when we think about Michelle Obama, well, we squeal with excitement. So needless to say, we were thrilled when we found out that Som was designing a reasonably priced collection for Kohl's DesignNation line.

We did, however, have some reservations. Would the lower price-point have a negative effect on the look of the items? Would the luxurious aesthetic translate in the mass market? Luckily, all of our concerns were squashed as soon as we got to take a look for ourselves and chat with the designer.

Citing St. Barths as the inspiration for this beachy collection, Som revealed there were "no challenges working at a lower price point," adding that offering his designs to the masses is "the most exciting part." When asked what it is about that exact location that inspires him, Som said "St. Barths specifically has the perfect combination of French chic with that island, laid-back feel, and I wanted to capture that idea for women everywhere."

His impressive design career includes more than a slew of collections. Som is a two-time nominee for the Perry Ellis Award for Emerging Talent and of course, has plenty of experience dressing celebrities like FLOTUS. "Michelle Obama is not only an amazing, accomplished woman who is doing wonderful things, she also has a great sense of personal style. She is really dressing the way modern women dress, mixing high and low -- really having fun with it," he said of the First lady.

So, was she another source of inspo for the line? "It's funny. In every collection, there are a lot of dresses, and I always think in the back of my head, 'is this a Michelle Obama dress?'"

We can't blame him for thinking that, and we have to admit we can see her rocking one of the maxi dresses come summer.

You can shop the collection online now and in Kohl's stores starting April 10. Take a look at Som's favorite pieces from the collection below, including a menswear inspired jersey vest that is definitely going on our must-have list for spring.

Scarlett Johansson Crushes Our Paris Dreams In Glamour Mag

Scarlett Johansson is on a mission to make sneakers happen in Paris, and we couldn't be happier.

As the cover star of Glamour magazine's May 2014 issue, Johansson talked about life after her divorce from Ryan Reynolds, that infamous nickname and her approach to getting older (although 30 is hardly old in our book).

Johansson also gave some insight on the culture of her current home, Paris. On her style sense in France, she remarks on how the fashion crowd really does inspire what she wears on a daily basis:

The nice thing about being in Paris is that you know everybody's looking at what you're wearing: You have an audience, you know? New York is about street style that's functional. A Paris look is not functional! It doesn’t matter if your shoes are comfortable. Here [in New York] you can still wear your Nikes. In Paris you suck it up. You hobble around. Although my girlfriends in Paris and I decided we're adopting the trend of athletic streetwear 'cause we got sick of it. I was like, 'I am sick of not feeling my big toe after two hours of dancing!'

While we've always had this fantasy of looking lavish in Paris with nothing stopping us, we admire Johansson's honesty in making the statement that wearing heels everyday can sometimes be an unrealistic decision. And, we're with you girl, as we love our Nike and Converse sneakers too much to swap them out for pumps.

See Johansson's Glamour cover and feature photos shot by Tom Munro below, and get your copy digitally today or at newsstands April 15. Read the rest of her interview here.

Beauty Cheat Sheet: Products That Make Beauty Routines Easier for Spring

$
0
0
A new season means its time to change up beauty or makeup products. Hair, skin and nails often have different needs in the warmer months, and of course, it never hurts to do a little spring cleaning and updating in this area of life as the new season starts.

Sunscreen is a non-negotiable no matter what age you are. The editor favorite here at Condiment is Supergoop's Save Face moisturizer. It's lightweight, water resistant, with SPF 35, plus cruelty free, paraben, frangrance and oxybenzone free. The smallest dab covers a lot of ground on the face and neck. For the body, Coola Sport SPF sunscreen spray is 97% organic and packed with all kinds of ingredients good for the skin like aloe, fruit extracts and oils. The spray makes covering exposed skin on the shoulders, back, arms and legs easy. It's water resistant for up to 40 minutes and isn't tested on animals.

Just because you're keeping the sun's damaging rays away from your skin doesn't mean you can't get a bit of a sun-kissed glow. Self tanners have become so advanced that home application is practically fool proof. Vita Liberata gets a lot of buzz and great reviews with good reason. It gives a pretty, natural glow that can work for any skin tone.

When it comes to makeup, tinted moisturizer can be a spring and summertime saver, including at night. Favorites here include Stila and Flower Beauty, both of which are great for daytime coverage and a soft, glowy look at night. For a little more coverage, Nars tinted moisturizer is great, and has built in primer to even out any imperfections, etc.

For haircare, The Lab's hair mask is a Condiment editor favorite. Slather it on your tresses weekly to keep your hair in great shape during the warmer weather months and elements from saltwater, chlorine from the pool, sun, etc.

The key to great nails all season is all about the products. The spring and summer months might mean your hands and feet are more exposed than during the winter months, but that doesn't mean you've got to hit the nail salon every week. Invest in good manicure and pedicure products at home to either do it yourself, or maintain what you've had done in the salon. Tweezerman nail clippers are the best hands down that we've tried. For nail polish, Zoya, China Glaze, Butter London and Nars are all favorites -- the key with polish at home is all in the type of product and brush and these are tried and tested favorites here. Go with light tones for easier application when doing mani or pedi at home.

We also love Bliss waxing strips for at home bikini waxing. The strips are so easy to use, and work really well.

Wedding Traditions From Around The World You've Probably Never Heard Of

Weddings, to this day, are steeped in tradition -- regardless of where in the world they take place.

For instance, did you know that the practice of wearing a veil originated in Rome, and that it was designed to hide the bride from evil spirits? Or that carrying a bouquet originated in ancient times in order for brides to ward off bad luck with strong smelling herbs or flowers?

Okay, perhaps you were familiar with those. But the folks over at Purely Diamonds in the UK created an infographic with 16 of the weirder, more unknown, wedding traditions from around the world -- some still used, and some long gone.

Anne Hathaway Got Tipsy At The Oscars With Joseph Gordon-Levitt And Gabourey Sidibe

Anne Hathaway may seem like Ms. Perfect, but this girl knows how to have some fun!

The "Rio 2" star made a little confession during an appearance on "Live with Kelly and Michael" Tuesday, April 8, revealing that she snuck a flask of tequila into the Oscars last month.

Her evening at the prestigious award show began with a seating mix-up, which led to an alcohol-filled gab-fest (literally).

"I was led to my seat with my husband [Adam Shulman] and I stopped in the section I thought I was sitting in, which was next to my friend Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and they said 'No, no, no, you're sitting in the center," Hathaway explained of the seating nightmare. "So I go over, making my way to the center of the center of the center and there's a beautiful woman wearing pink with her hair up, but she's fully facing away from me and I'm like, 'Shoot! Excuse me, I'm sorry but I think you're in my seat' [and] Penelope Cruz turns around. And I'm like, 'Oh, no you're not!'"

At that point, the commercial break was ending and everyone was returning to their seats as the director yelled, "3, 2, 1." Seeing one empty chair, Hathaway's husband grabbed it ... and she sat down on his lap.

"So we got to watch one part of the Oscars that way," Hathaway joked.

As for the rest of the night, the Oscar winner decided to switch things up a bit.

"I guess because I hosted one year ... Block it out! I have ... I've gone through it a couple of times, so this year, I decided to do something a little different," Hathaway explained to Kelly Ripa and Michael Strahan. "I got a perfect purse-sized flask, which I put tequila in, and I had a great time! It was really nice, and it's a great ice-breaker."

So, did she share her beverage? "Of course [I shared it]," she continued, "Joe was sitting next to me, whom I mentioned before, and Gabourey Sidibe, whom I never met before, but she's so awesome."

Who knew Anne was such a daredevil? Kudos to her!

The University of Texas "Keeps Austin Weird"

$

Alma mater of Wes Anderson and Matthew McConaughey, the University of Texas at Austin is home to 50,000 students, with a campus that spans over 40 acres. While the university is not in the heart of downtown Austin, there are still many local attractions around campus including the Harry Ransom Center (where the Gutenberg Bible currently resides) and the Blanton Museum of Art.

In addition, the live music capital of the world is saturated with many local restaurants and food trucks, boutiques, coffee shops and concert halls, making it one of the most vibrant and culturally diverse places to live in. Even though Austin is an amazing city in itself, students have come from all over the country and the world to study at UT because of its international recognition and prestigious standing among public schools in the U.S.

Known for its scholastic achievers and creative innovators, UT fosters an intellectual curiosity that affords a plethora of opportunities to its student body. Since there were a variety of extracurricular activities to choose from, during my free time I decided to collaborate with other Fashionistas and bloggers, which lead me to discover new trends on campus and around Austin.

Despite how fashion can sometimes be marginalized in our everyday lives, street style is often encouraged and welcomed here in the Texas capital. The "Keep Austin Weird" slogan further exemplifies Austinites' street style attitude and helps to explain the mélange of eccentric and outlandish outfits seen on campus. While some students still capture the zeitgeist of UT's traditional southern roots wearing cowboy boots and sundresses, others opt for a more casual chic attire to wear to class.

That said, this fashion merchandising student and blogger at The Darling Detail, perfectly epitomizes the classic, perennial look at UT. Showing great aplomb in sporting her outfit, this savvy Fashionista placed contemporary pieces together to create a crisp and clean ensemble. Her blue button-down from Zara paired with her high-waisted shorts from Langford Market, added a refined elegance to the look. Since her attire is very versatile, she paired her garments with different accessories from Austin area designers, such as the handbag from Kelly Wynne and earrings from Kendra Scott. The finishing touches included pastel pink penny loafers from BCBG, sunglasses from Ray-Ban and a scarf from Buffalo Exchange. This Fashionista's look, effortlessly trendy and charming, was very reminiscent of a cross between Poppy Delevingne and Jane Birkin's sophisticated style.

Diana Vreeland (former editor-in-chief of Vogue) believed that those who had style shared one thing in common: originality. So, like this Fashionista, it is then incumbent upon us to cultivate our own ideas of originality, whatever they may be: through our personal influences, backgrounds and quirky interests. Whether its having a penchant for combat boots or an obsession with cowboy hats, by channeling and embracing these idiosyncrasies, students will have the ability to express themselves through fashion and continue to personify the true meaning of "Keeping Austin Weird."

Brooklyn Decker's happy to have made the transition from Sports Illustrated cover girl to "Friends With Better Lives" actress.

"Acting is much more gratifying than modeling," she told HuffPost Live's Marc Lamont Hill in an interview to promote the new CBS sitcom.

"But I wasn't a good model," she added.

"I know that's so crazy and people want to hurt me when I say that. But really, when I was modeling, I never walked a runway," she explained. "I got fired from jobs all the time. Sports Illustrated was really the only client that loved me."

26-year-old Decker has been featured in spreads for Teen Vogue, Glamour and Cosmo. Still, she emphasized her that she'd be sticking to acting in the future.

"I was just never any good at it, so, for me, acting just feels right," Decker concluded.

Kim Kardashian Explains Why She Instagramed A Photo From Google Images

Perhaps you recall that after a recent family vacation to Thailand, Kim Kardashian Instagramed a beautiful beachside snapshot showcasing the blue-green wonder of the Andaman Sea -- a photo that she snagged from Google Images.

After scratching our heads as to why Kardashian wouldn't choose one of her own photos to represent all the memories from her vacation, the 33-year-old reality star took to her personal blog on Tuesday, April 8, to explain the perplexing incident.

"There’s 2 things I have to get off my chest. I know I should ignore these things, and usually I do but I’m just in that mood today," Kardashian started to explain on her blog. "#1) I instagramed a pic of Thailand I found on Google thanking Thailand for the memories we had on our recent trip. I never claimed to have taken that pic. It was the best pic to show how pretty Thailand was. I was already home and couldn’t take a new pic… just didn’t have scenic pics on my phone! I see today people are calling me a fraud… but ummm when did I ever say i took that pic? LOL."

We agree that calling Kardashian a fraud is harsh, and while it's true she didn't claim to have taken the photo, we'd have to say there's an implicit expectation that photos posted to Instagram are taken by the user. That's kind of the whole point of Instagram; to share your photos with other people.

Kardashian also took the opportunity to clear up reports that she enjoyed six-hour spa treatments each day.

"I see the hotel I stayed at gave quotes that I had 6-hour spa treatments daily. The hotel was gorgeous and had amazing service, but not once did I get a massage, which I’m actually pissed I didn’t do because a Thai massage I heard are the best!," she explained.

Besides, Kardashian was "busy taking selfies all day!" And while she doesn't appreciate false information making her out to look like a diva, she points out that she was in fact on vacation. "I would rather spend six hours a day with my family and daughter, not in spa treatments," she wrote.

It's been a minute since we tuned into "Pee-Wee's Playhouse." But as soon as we caught a glimpse of Emma Stone's latest red carpet look, the quirky TV character's "Tequila" dance popped into our heads.

The 25-year-old actress showed up at the London photocall for her film "The Amazing Spider-Man 2: Rise of Electro" sporting a gray double-breasted Saint Laurent suit, buttoned-up white shirt and black pumps. All that was missing from this Pee-Wee Herman-esque ensemble was a red bow tie.

All jokes aside, we love how Stone took a risk by pairing her menswear-inspired look with glossy red strands, smokey eye makeup and a peachy-nude lip color.

Amanda Bynes Was Not Diagnosed With Schizophrenia, Says Lawyer

Amanda Bynes made a decision to leave the spotlight after she was forcibly hospitalized this past July, and now her lawyer is speaking out to clear up rumors as to the what sent the former actress to require months of psychiatric treatment.

"There has been much speculation about Amanda's medical condition," Bynes' attorney Tamar Arminak told People magazine. "She has remained silent because she believed it was best to keep her mental health diagnosis private."

Though the 28-year-old still wishes to maintain her privacy, she asked that her lawyer dispel one specific rumor.

"For the record, Amanda does not have schizophrenia, nor has she ever been diagnosed with it," Arminak said, adding that she's currently on "zero medication," and is "devoted to living her life as healthy as possible." What's more, Bynes' lawyer maintains that the actress "never had a history of abusing alcohol or hard drugs, and she's proud to say she's been marijuana-free for the past nine months."

Bynes is currently studying at the Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising's Orange County campus, and has mostly laid low since completing inpatient treatment in December 2013, however, she did return to Twitter this past weekend, sharing photos from her family vacation in Los Cabos, Mexico.

Bynes' lawyer tells People the "She's The Man" star is "doing extremely well," while a family source told the magazine she "continues to undergo outpatient therapy several times a week," and explained that she is still working through the causes of her past behavior.
