Celebrities Beat The Heat With Loose Waves On This Week's Best & Worst Beauty List

$

On rainy, humid days (like the gross ones we've been having lately on the East Coast), we just want to shove our frizzy hair into a baseball hat. But that sporty look is only cute for so long. Luckily, the stars who topped this week's beauty list have inspired us to beat the heat with their loose waves.

Sophia Bush sported her ombré locks in a tousled hairdo and Zoe Saldana just let her shiny, brunette strands flow down her shoulders. Meanwhile, Reese Witherspoon and Nicole Richie styled their lob haircuts with beachy waves.

Check out these celebrities sporting loose waves below (plus more standout hair and makeup looks).

BEST: Sophia Bush

sophia bush

The "Chicago P.D." star's side-swept waves and matte burgundy lipstick are absolutely flawless. The flirty hairstyle shows off her beautiful face and that charming snake cuff earring.

BEST: Reese Witherspoon

reese witherspoon

Witherspoon is absolutely glowing with her loose, blonde waves and radiant complexion. Subtle purple eyeshadow makes her blue eyes pop.

BEST: Nicole Richie

nicole richie

We fall more in love with Richie's lavender strands every time we see her. Because her hair color is an accessory on its own, neutral makeup and long lashes add the perfect finishing touch.

BEST: Zoe Saldana

zoe saldana

Saldana is the picture of sophistication with her glossy waves, winged eyeliner and cherry red lipstick. We gotta get our hands on this shade!

BEST: Dania Ramirez

dania ramirez

The "Devious Maids" star's waves are a bit more "styled" than the other celebrities on our best list, but we gotta give her props for this voluminous 'do and her bright red-orange lips.

WORST: Ilhame Paris

ilhame paris

We had no clue who this singer-songwriter was, but we'll never forget her super tanned skin, frosty eye makeup and dated lip gloss. It's all simply too much.

WORST: Rita Ora

rita ora

Ora's makeup is absolutely flawless (no surprise here). However, it's her braided hair buns (à la Gwen Stefani) that give us pause.

WORST: Stella McCartney

stella mccartney

The fashion designer looks a bit more unkempt than we're used to seeing her with this messy hair and grungy eyeshadow.

WORST: Tamara Rothstein

tamara rothstein

Grown-out roots with super thick brows are so played out. Time for a change, right?

WORST: Kate Moenning

kate moenning

We get that this disheveled hairdo is "The L Word" actress' signature look, but it's pushing the limit and coming across as sloppy.

Alexa Chung's Cute Floppy Hat And More Accessories Of The Week

The snow has melted, which means there is no excuse to be stashing your heels. Celebrate the warm weather in your highest pumps, biggest hat and brightest sunnies, just like the celebs did over the past couple of days.

Scroll down for our favorite accessories of the week.

Alexa Chung's hat, heels and purse

alexa

Proof, yet again, that accessories make an outfit. Chung's rather plain grey dress looks so much cooler with her strappy shoes, little handbag and charcoal hat.

Leslie Mann's pumps

mann

We love how she paired neon pink pumps with a black jumpsuit, as it livens up her outfit and shows that she doesn't take herself too seriously.

Jessica Biel's sunglasses

jess

Though this neutral outfit would have looked good with most sunglasses, these seafoam green ones are fun and perfect for the spring weather we've been having.

LeAnn Rimes' heels

Those are some serious heels, but they sure do amp up her boyfriend jeans and white tank.

Beyoncé's bunny ears

If anyone can pull this off, it's Bey.

Diane Kruger's Peter Pilotto for Target Slip-On Shoes

Sneakers are the best because they are not only comfortable, but stylish, too. And these Target kicks are especially great because they are so affordable.

Who else is excited for the Met Gala?!

In case you are living on another planet, the Costume Institute Ball is quite unlike the Oscars or Golden Globes -- this fashion fête is notorious for its over-the-top dress code, coinciding with the year's theme. But this year, things are a bit more subdued to honor "America’s best-known couturier" Charles James. And not everyone is excited about it (we're talking about you, Marc Jacobs).

This week, there were some major Met Ball throwbacks on Instagram and we're not complaining. Not to mention, Vogue has teamed up with a mom to recreate iconic Met Gala dresses from years past, but for children. Kiddie couture? That's awesome!

Scroll down to see what Blake Lively wore to the 2010 Met Gala, Rooney Mara's punk look from last year and more stylish moments.

If the White House Correspondents' Dinner is "nerd prom," then Sofia Vergara was definitely this year's prom queen.

The "Modern Family" star dazzled at the WHCD Saturday night, May 3, at the Washington Hilton in Washington, D.C., alongside her fiance, Nick Loeb. Vergara looked stunning in a Romona Keveza gown with a metallic bodice and white skirt as she posed for photos on the red carpet.

The night was big for the 41-year-old Colombia-born beauty.

"I feel very honored to be in the presence of the President of the United States," she told the Washington Post. "I just became a citizen. It's very exciting."

Correspondent's Weekend DC: The East Coast's Answer to the Oscars?

$

Washington DC's biggest fashion draw other than an inauguration just happened, and the fashion crowd jumped on it. It has been hashtagged "nerd prom" and gained momentum for branding of what was once a media gathering into a celebrity and fashion focus. The Acela from New York to DC was a cattle car of garment bag toting PR reps as personalities and brands started pushing their way into this celebration of the intelligentsia. The mad rush to be a part of the weekend seemed to contradict the origins but what is now being toted as the "Oscar's of the East Coast" is more or less press for the press. From a fashion perspective there seemed to be three distinct categories: Hollywood being responsible, political players that have style and the DC hometown crowd.

Hollywood being responsible are the personalities who are showing an awareness to the power of DC. This weekend is a chance to get shown around like a bit of a trophy but at the same time raise awareness for causes close to their heart. They tend to be dressed in their own clothes or if they are being gifted by a brand then the choices are conservative. Unlike Los Angeles, DC tends to shun the overproduced facial features of Hollywood or a Real Housewife. To witness an aging starlet try to convince political and publishing titans of her agenda through a pair of lips that resemble a piece of bologna curling in a frying pan is a bit like watching a mime in an invisible box. DC is the place to talk about political and social platforms, and it is a bit distracting to see a subsection of this group teetering around in their Louboutin platforms. I was recently made an honorary woman by some friends and in that group there is no bashing other women so I want to make an effort to celebrate the women who do it right in DC. There are some Hollywood attendees that balance the glamour while staying respectful of the proceedings such as Rosario Dawson, Frieda Pinto, Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Kerry Washington. These women are absolutely stunning and breathtaking in person while being approachable.

Political players that have style are a tight clique in DC. This is the mean girls club, and you got to give it to them: They own this town. I am mostly writing about women here, but this is one area where you can include gay men. They are educated, they have some sort of family heritage tied to the city and they never shop in DC. It is really strange because you want to think that behind the Ice Queen is an insecure person holding up a façade of toughness, but most times she really is that mean. I personally get a kick out of this crowd because without them DC would be like an ocean without sharks. Somebody has to be the queen of the fashion food chain. Because I love this group of OCD women\gay men so much there will be no naming names here, but that does not matter because they know who they are and will still strike at me next time we meet.

The DC hometown crowd are the heart and soul of this city. They either live here or have lived here and understand understated elegance. I will admit that there are some members of this group that still live in ill-fitting shift dresses with their bra straps showing, but as I recently began to count them at a brunch I stopped and felt disgusted a little with myself. These are the women that are usually mothers on top of all the other achievements in their lengthy resume because DC and the surrounding areas are a great place to raise a family. The access to the best cultural activities and the feeling of open skies are rare for a big city so it attracts women who are extremely aware of their environment but not necessarily flashy in their personal presentation. People tend to talk to me about fashion but drop the name of a private school or charity board into this group and suddenly Lanvin means nothing. What is most admirable about this group is they tend to dress body conscious in a healthy image and do not project the feeling that they are selling out. These women have it all -- and while they are photographed to the point that fashion choices have impacts on their profile both socially and career wise -- you just get the impression they are NOT checking press outlets the next morning to see whether they made best dressed.

The fashion future of the White House Correspondent's Dinner weekend will be interesting but might have reached a tipping point. The glamorous family of Obama will be a hard act to follow for the next DC power couple and at this point honestly, we get it. There will be certain personalities and brands that find this to be a market you cannot buy your way into but you must fit the profile of the audience. DC is a market where substance outweighs flash and hopefully it will stay that way. So stay tuned for the next stop that the celebrity and fashion crowd will have their eyes on : Davos Fashion Week.

Jessica Alba Covers June Glamour, Reveals The 'Weird' Reason She Won't Go Nude

Jessica Alba has worked her way into many fields over the span of career. From founding her own lifestyle brand to being the face of a slew of beauty brands, the actress has evolved into somewhat of a role model for women over the years.

It's not really surprising then, that she has a no-nudity clause when it comes to the movies she does. What may surprise you, however, is her reasoning. The 33-year-old sat down with Glamour magazine to talk relationships, starting a business and the one thing that prevents her from doing a nude scene:

"I don’t want my grandparents to see my boobs. That’s it. It would be weird at Christmas. And, I mean, really, if you look at the movies I have done, getting naked would never "elevate" the picture."

Simple as that, folks. And we can't say we blame her. Nothing ruins a nice meal more than the visual of your relatives naked.

Jay Z's 'Proposal' To Beyonce Was The Met Gala's Cutest Moment

Of course Jay Z and Beyonce managed to have the cutest moment of the entire 2014 Met Gala.

The "XO" singer was making her way down the red carpet at the Met Gala Monday night, May 5, beside her husband in a noir-inspired Givenchy dress, looking all sorts of gorgeous, when one of her rings slipped off her finger. The rapper managed to find the bauble on the ground for his wife without much trouble. Instead of simply giving the ring back, Jay Z staged a mock proposal and slipped the ring back on her finger.

Photographers captured the adorable moment, as Beyonce laughed at Jay's gesture. Then Queen Bey and her king strolled away hand-in-hand, and lived happily ever after.

Memphis Church Throws A Prom For People With Disabilities, Brings Joy To Community

For some, it was their very first prom. For others, it was an opportunity to be catered to and pampered.

The idea for the Memphis Joy Prom came to Ashley Parks and Ginna Rauls a year ago in a Starbucks in Memphis, Tenn.

Parks, who has been in the special needs industry for more than 20 years, now holds a role as Christ United Methodist Church's special needs ministry director. While Rauls is also active in Memphis' special needs community. Over coffee, they came up with the idea to throw a prom for 110 people ages 16 and up with special needs .

On April 25, people came from all over to attend the prom which was sponsored by a group of local churches. Among the attendees was a couple in their 60s with disabilities who never attended their high school prom.

"At a certain point people phase out of things but we said, you know what, lets open this up for people over the age of 22 and think of those who may not have experienced an event like this before," Parks told The Huffington Post.

"We decided we like 'joy' because that's what we hope to bring," Parks said.

With the help of 350 volunteers and donations, it was possible to provide attendees with all the aspects of a classic prom experience.

Guests arrived in limos and walked down the red carpet with their volunteer hosts as they were greeted by Rick Trotter, the announcer for the Memphis Grizzlies basketball team, according to Yahoo News.

Each host was given a card with their date's allergies to as well as a checklist of everything they wanted to experience that night, Parks told to HuffPost.

The attendees were able to get their nails and makeup done, and their shoes shined. There was also an ice sculpture and a candy bar with all the sweets you can imagine.

"We didn't miss anything," Parks said.

Kim Kardashian suffered a minor wardrobe malfunction on her way to the Met Gala Monday night, May 5, in New York City.

While exiting the Lanvin store in NYC en route to the fashionable affair, Kardashian's underwear was visible as the thigh-high slit of her blue gown opened a bit too far. Photographers were nearby to capture the snafu, as Kanye West escorted his bride-to-be into a waiting vehicle.

Once on the red carpet at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Kardashian managed to remain covered-up even while striking a leggy pose, a la Angelina Jolie.

Author Tracy McMillan Shares 4 Questions To Ask When Your Relationship Isn't Working (VIDEO)

$

0
Call it a sixth sense, a nagging feeling or simple intuition, but when a relationship isn't working out, you know it. What you don't always know, however, is why. Relationship author Tracy McMillan, who penned the book Why You're Not Married… Yet, has written often about love and recently shared some of her advice with Oprah on an episode of "Super Soul Sunday."

The first thing you should do when you sense that your relationship isn't going the way you want it to, McMillan says, is to look inwardly. This idea often conflicts with our instincts to "fix" the other person, but McMillan insists that looking inwardly is an essential perspective to have when it comes to relationships.

McMillan is quick to explain that it's not about looking for flaws or being hyper-critical of yourself. "Don't look at it in a way of being mean to yourself and going, 'How come you haven't figured it out yet?'" she says.

That's not the right question to ask. Instead, McMillan says that you should ask yourself four questions when your relationship is on the rocks:

1. Where do I need to love myself more?

2. What is it that I'm here to learn?

3. What is it that I believe about myself that this situation is showing me?

4. What can I do about it?

By asking these four questions, you'll find clarity not just within your relationship, but yourself. Like McMillan, Oprah strongly believes that everything in life teaches us more about ourselves.

"Every experience, every encounter, is there to help us to come to know more fully who we really are," Oprah says. "Nothing that ever happens is wasted -- unless you let it be wasted."

"Super Soul Sunday" airs Sundays at 11 a.m. ET on OWN, during which it also streams worldwide on Oprah.com, Facebook.com/owntv and Facebook.com/supersoulsunday.

7 Ways You're Doing Laundry Wrong

$
0
0
Beyond sorting lights from darks, there's an art to getting clothes really clean, and chances are you're unwittingly making some mistakes. We asked laundry experts to give us the dirt.

By Erika Rasmusson Janes

White Jeans

White jeans that are a cotton/spandex blend (and that's pretty much every pair these days) present a challenge because they can't be washed with that go-to stain remover for whites: "You can't bleach spandex," says Clorox scientist and "Dr. Laundry" blogger Mary Gagliardi. Using chlorine bleach on white jeans with spandex will result in yellowing -- exactly the opposite of what you want. Instead, use color-safe bleach.

Swimsuits

swimsuit laundry

Tossing your suit in the wash—even in a mesh bag, even on the gentle cycle—is a mistake, says Steve Boorstein, aka The Clothing Doctor. Skip the washer and the detergent, and simply rinse your suit with water after each dip in the pool. If a salt-water or chlorine smell still lingers, soak it in water mixed with a teaspoon of vinegar. And to prevent chlorine or salt-water damage in the first place, wet your suit with regular water before taking a dip in the pool or ocean.

Dark Clothes

To keep your dark clothes (especially cotton) from fading, you know to wash them inside out, in cold water -- but you need to skip the dryer, says Gagliardi. The heat is far more damaging to dark-colored clothing. "Air-drying is the secret to keeping clothing looking like new," says Lindsey Boyd, co-founder of The Laundress.

Your Kids' Clothes

childrens clothes laundry

They go into the washer dirty and look totally clean when you put them into the dryer, so how is it possible that when you then pull them out, you find them ruined by a constellation of dark, blotchy stains that appeared from out of nowhere? Those blotches are actually oil-based stains -- the remnants of last Friday's pizza dinner, for instance. From now on, Gagliardi recommends, pretreat oil-based stains with a tiny amount of liquid dishwashing detergent. "The superconcentrated grease-cutting surfactants work well on these types of stains," she says. Boorstein suggests washing these items in a mesh bag, so you know exactly which items should be air-dried. Another tip: If it's a special item -- say, his holiday button down -- take it to the dry cleaners; the solvents used can cut through tough oil stains. To get a better price (these are your kids' clothes, after all), tell your cleaner that the items don't need to be pressed.

Down Jackets And Comforters

The secret to washing down items correctly: an extra rinse cycle! Residual detergent in the feathers can reduce down's ability to be fluffy and trap air, which is how it holds heat, says Gagliardi. Part of the problem is that when you wash a coat or comforter, the down gets wet and clumpy and the weight doesn't distribute evenly, making it hard for your machine to rinse and spin effectively. She recommends taking your down items to a laundromat and washing them in a large-capacity washer. Then, dry items completely with a clean tennis ball.

Towels

towels laundry

Skip the fabric softener or dryer sheets. "Fabric softeners reduce the absorbency when drying off -- the whole point of a towel," says Boyd. To prevent towels from getting a yucky smell (the result of bacteria, says Boorstein), be careful not overload the machine, wash on the longest cycle in the hottest water and remove immediately after the wash cycle is finished.

The Washer

Surprise! The washing machine itself needs an occasional cleaning, thanks to build-up of detergent, fabric softener, dirt and dead skin cells. (High-energy and front-loading machines are especially susceptible to mildew, according to The Laundress.) While commercial, washing-machine cleaners are available, Boorstein recommends regularly running a "rinse" load of hot water and bleach.

The Wild Thing Anna Wintour Wouldn't Let Madonna Wear To The Met Gala

Well, that's one way of sticking it to the (wo)man.

The Met Gala had celebrities and fashion icons alike flocking to New York by the dozen Monday night. It seemed like anyone who is anyone was there. Absent from the celebration, however, was Madonna. And now we have insight as to why.

The singer posted a censored photo to her Instagram of what she claims she "wanted" to wear to the event, but says the choice was denied by Anna Wintour, the host of the evening. Captioned using the hashtag #artforfreedom, it kind of looks like Madonna is throwing shade at the fashion queen.

We have to admit, we're pretty happy Madge chose not to show up on the red carpet wearing this, for our sake, and for the sake of every worst-dressed list, too. Plus, maybe now we have some new music to look forward to from our favorite "Material Girl"?
