The Best Beauty Advice We've Ever Received From Our Mothers

0
0
There are no words that can truly express the love and gratitude that we have for our mothers. Every day they bestow upon us their great wisdom, including guidance on how to heal from a broken heart and how to strut in a killer pair of high heels.

The lessons we've learned from our mothers are deeply-rooted within us. And since sharing is something they would appreciate, we're dropping gems from our mamas.

In honor of Mother's Day, we are sharing with you the best beauty advice we've ever received from our mothers (and grandmothers).

My mom [Mary Ann] has always told me: "Pretty is as pretty does"-- meaning your beauty comes from how well you treat people and carry yourself in the world. No amount of makeup, lotions or potions can mask a mean spirit.

If there's one thing my mom [Marilyn] has taught me about beauty, it's that you really don't need to conform to any type of trend -- my mom has dyed her hair a million colors and wears the flashiest prints, because they represent her, not what others think about her. This has definitely been an inspiration for the bold, bright lipsticks I wear and my ability to accept my hair as hair, not a super precious gem that's worth a million dollars. Deborah Lindquist: Dressing Your Mom in Style for Mother's Day

By Deborah Lindquist

"Are you wearing that?" My mom asks me.

In my fearless quest to create my teenage sense of style, I did sometimes come up with "interesting" ideas. "Oh, do you mean this purple turtleneck bodystocking with a neon lime green micro miniskirt?" (This was before Punk Glam designer Stephen Sprouse made neon a hot trend.)

What?

So she may not ask you those questions anymore (with that look!) and besides that, you're now certain to wear just the right thing for her Mother's Day brunch, flea market shopping excursion, getaway, or whatever your day together brings.

Mother's Day is the perfect day to give your mom something fun to wear. Not only will she think of you every time she wears it, you know her well enough to know her favorite things. Here are some ideas for the perfect Mother's Day gift.

The pretty floral
Always in fashion, a pretty floral print skirt can be a great Mother's Day gift choice. This handpainted floral skirt is made of vintage kimono fabric, and is a lovely piece for your mom to wear to a brunch date out with her family.

An artistic sweater
Cardigans are the easiest layering pieces ever invented. Designed to button up or not, they become favorite go-to pieces when you just don't know how the weather will be today. Pops of color and artistic appliques make this reincarnated cashmere sweater a work of art and a fun piece to wear anywhere. Layer it over a basic top or dress and you're prepared for the day.

A lot of kisses
Mothers are all about love, and Mother's Day is the day to celebrate all the love she gives. From your earliest boo-boo kisses to the ones she now gives to her grandchildren, the love goes on. It's funny how kisses can change everything--even make a scraped knee feel better. It's as if they are magic. Spread some of those magic kisses around and give her a kiss appliqued scarf. No size required, just a fun piece covered in kisses.

Have a great Mother's Day, filled with happiness and love. Whatever you choose to do with your mom, knowing that you gave her a fashionable gift will keep you from asking the question, "Mom, are you wearing that?"

As one of America's most sought after environmentally conscious designers, Deborah Lindquist creates exquisite apparel out of a mix of "reincarnated" and new Earth-friendly fabrics, such as cashmere, hemp and bamboo. Lindquist's avant-garde apparel has been showcased in numerous publications including Elle, In Style, Lucky, WWD, Vibe, People, Brides and Maxim. You can also catch her one-of-a-kind pieces during episodes of Lifetime's How to Look Good Naked and Access Hollywood's Hollywood Green. She has dressed trendsetters such as Rihanna, Pink, Christina Aguilera, Jessica Simpson, Paris Hilton, Keisha Cole and Jessica Alba. Check out her press page and blog to learn more about Deborah.

Miley Cyrus Dances With Blow-Up Doll On Stage (NSFW)

Miley Cyrus added a blow-up doll and an inflatable penis to her stage act when she put on a "secret" show at G-A-Y in London on Friday, May 9. We could be like, "OMG MILEY!!!! THAT'S SO CRAZZZYYYY! WE ARE SoOoOoOo SHOCKED," but maybe we'll just be contrarian and declare this a snoozefest. Nothing really beats a huge hot dog these days, anyway.

"Everyone's gay," Cyrus said during the concert, according to reports from the show. "All it takes is one cocktail. And if that doesn't work, sprinkle something in their drink. That’s what I always do."

Enjoy these photos from her most boring show yet.

Kim Kardashian Wears All White To Her Bridal Shower In Beverly Hills

Kim Kardashian is counting down the days to her May 24 nuptials, and on Saturday, May 10, was caught by the paparazzi on her way to a hotel in Beverly Hills where she celebrated her bridal shower.

Shutterbugs from the photo agency X17 Online caught the reality star in a strapless white dress, pearls and silver heels. Her mother, Kris Jenner, also wore all white.

On Friday, Us Weekly posted what they claim to be the official wedding invitation of Kardashian and fiance Kanye West. The gold-embossed black invite calls for black tie attire and reveals a 6 p.m. dinner, but does not state an exact location. "Guests won't know the venue until they get to Paris," a source told the publication last month.

kim

Kardashian, 33, last celebrated a bridal shower in 2011 before she married Kris Humphries. The July affair took place at her mother's Calabasas home and Demi Lovato, Serena Williams, former Spice Girl Melanie Brown, Brittny Gastineau and Rachael Ray were all in attendance.

OMG It's Mother's Day: Last Minute Gift Suggestions

0
0
If you live nearby, a visit never fails. My favorite mothers' days have been the ones I've spent at home and that feel like any other lazy Sunday morning, but with my kids and my husband and all three dogs lazing around with me. Maybe you bring over muffins and a bag of her favorite gourmet coffee or a special tea.

A nice card with a note that shows her you've noticed nice things she's done for you this year, or in the past, is always a nice touch. Flowers with a note that says "happy mother's day" are great, but even more meaningful is something that lets you articulate just how thankful you are for your
relationship with her.

A book you've read and loved (and think she'll like, too). I like reading books recommended by my son and daughter. It gives me a little insight into their interests while also sparking great conversation.

Take a class together. Something you both enjoy -- a cooking class, yoga, a class about wine.

Suggest taking her on a trip she's always wanted to go on. Maybe it's just a day trip, or maybe it's a weekend at the beach. She'll love the thought, but even more, she'll love spending the time together.

Commission a pet portrait. You know you've been replaced. So why not give her a gift that celebrates her newest object of spoiling (nicely framed, of course, or at least delivered with a promise to do so later).

Take her to SoulCycle. Mom loves music, and she loves to make you sweat. Show her you're over that whole not wanting to been seen in public thing by taking her to your favorite trendy workout class.

Give her a grandchild!

Jennifer Lawrence Ditches Dior For Jason Wu At 'X-Men: Days Of Future Past' World Premiere

Jennifer Lawrence on the red carpet and she's not wearing Dior? Yes, it's true.

The 23-year-old
did the unimaginable when she attended the "X-Men: Days Of Future Past" world premiere in New York City on Saturday dressed in a Jason Wu dress. You're probably wondering, "What's the big deal? She looks fantastic!"

We have no arguments that Lawrence looks stunning in the navy velvet slip gown and her perfectly growing-out pixie haircut. However, it's the daring decision she made by NOT wearing the fashion house she gets paid lots of money to represent.

We can tell from the confidence she oozes in the photographs below that the Academy Award-winning actress has not a single worry about ditching Dior for Jason Wu. Besides, she's already revealed that she really doesn't "know anything about fashion." So, we'd cut her some slack, especially if that means seeing Lawrence step out in more form-fitting dresses like this by other designers.

What do you think of Jennifer Lawrence's surprising fashion switch-up?

Celebrities Wearing Candy-Colored Lipsticks Top This Week's Best & Worst Beauty List

0

Lipstick is one of the easiest and cheapest ways to update your beauty look. And the celebrities who landed on this week's best beauty list are wearing some of this season's hottest lip colors.

From Jamie Chung's strawberry pink lips to Joan Smalls' blue-purple pout, it's time to stash away your winter reds and burgundies for brighter spring shades.

See these stars' candy-colored lipstick looks below (plus more note-worthy hair and makeup).

BEST: Jamie Chung

jamie chung

The "Believe" actress popped up at a brunch in New York City sporting this half-up, half-down hairstyle that she paired with just a flick of liner on her upper lids, a touch of blush and berry lipstick.

BEST: Michelle Obama

michelle obama

FLOTUS turned heads at the opening of the Anna Wintour Center at the Metropolitan Museum of Art wearing a layered hairdo, boyish brows, kohl-rimmed eyes and glossy nude lips.

BEST: Alesha Dixon

alesha dixon

The English singer-dancer loves brightly colored lipsticks, and this red-orange shade pops against her bronzed complexion and sun-kissed strands.

BEST: Joan Smalls

joan smalls

Leave it up to Smalls to show us how to take this vampy lip color trend from the runway to real life. Plus, her fishtail braid is perfectly plaited.

BEST: Reese Witherspoon

reese witherspoon

Witherspoon channeled old Hollywood at The Met Gala with this coiffed hairstyle. The bronze eye makeup and hot pink lipstick add a modern touch.

WORST: Carmen Electra

carmen electra

This is an example of how NOT to wear false eyelashes. Electra's falsies are too long and clumpy, and the overdrawn brows and white eyeliner do not help.

WORST: Sofia Milos

sofia milos

Again, poor false eyelash application. The "CSI: Miami" star looks like she's stuck in another decade with the big hair, white eyeshadow and super glossy red lipstick.

WORST: Eva Green

eva green

It's a shame that the French actress' natural beauty is overshadowed by her dark and drab hairstyle, smudged eyeliner and unflattering nude lip color.

WORST: Belen Esteban

belen esteban

Esteban's attempt at side cornrows is an epic fail. And the Spanish TV personality's lack of attention to her over-plucked eyebrows and smokey eyeshadow just makes her seem tired.

WORST: Rihanna

rihanna

We're so sad to see Riri land on our worst beauty list this week, but this messy updo and washed-out face makeup is a no-go.

13 Mother-Daughter Magazine Covers We Absolutely Adore

Every Mother's Day, someone in our families always manage to find from God knows where throwback photos and then uploads them to Facebook. While we do get teary-eyed clicking through pictures of mommy and me outfits, some of those images we rather not share with the entire world.

But, when you and your mom pose for a magazine cover, chances are you're going to brag nonstop. At least that's what we imagine every time we see a mother and daughter featured on our favorite magazines.

From supermodel Christie Brinkley and her gorgeous daughter, Sailor to First Lady Michelle Obama and her nurturing mother, Marian Robinson, here are 13 mother-daughter magazine covers that we absolutely adore.

Edward Enninful, W's Fashion And Style Director, Says 'Without Diversity, Creativity Remains Stagnant'

0
0
There is a short list of black luminaries within the fashion industry and Edward Enninful is definitely on it. As W magazine’s fashion and style director he has helped break barriers and has challenged fashion's diversity problem -- all while producing some of the most stunning editorials.

For that and so much more, Enninful was honored at the 49th annual Frederick Douglass Awards, hosted by the New York Urban League. The event, which took place last Wednesday night, was full of other fashion heavyweights like Diane von Furstenberg, Balmain's Olivier Rousteing,Giambattista Valli and Jourdan Dunn, to name a few. But it was supermodel and Enninful's close friend, Naomi Campbell that was on hand to present Enninful with his award.

While Enninful said he counts himself "lucky" to have worked with fashion rockstars like Vogue's Anna Wintour and Grace Coddington, he also told the crowd that luck doesn't fix fashion's inequality when it comes to people of color.

But what if we lived in a world where luck had nothing to do with it, where high-quality education was provided to every student no matter the color of their skin or where they grew up? I can tell you, without diversity, creativity remains stagnant.

Indeed. Congrats, Edward!

Here's a look at a few Instagram snaps from the awesome event...

What Real Women Really Think About 'Push Presents'

0
0
Oh, the push present.

Chances are, you either just smiled fondly at the thought of (or looked down at) your very own, exaggeratedly rolled your eyes and/or gagged, or wondered WTF this thing is.

For you latter folks, I'll let Wikipedia inform you: push present (also known as a push gift, baby mama gift or baby bauble) is a present a father gives to the mother to mark the occasion of her giving birth to their child. In practice the present may be given before or after the birth, or even in the delivery room. The giving of push presents has supposedly grown in the United States in recent years.

In other words: Give birth, get a gift (other than the baby).

2014-04-15-rachelzoepushpresent.jpg

This whole push present discussion began in my circle when I posted this Facebook status:

2014-04-15-pushpresent2.png

That's right. As I was waiting at a popular Atlanta lunch spot for the valet to bring around my 2003 Xterra they hid down the street, two ladies were walking to their shiny white SUVs parked in front when one lady motioned to her Mercedes G-class and announced to her friend, "So this was my push present," followed by, "And this, too," as she flashed a sparkly right hand ring.

And that's when I ran her over. In my head.

I asked my FB pals to weigh in...

2014-04-15-pushpresent1.png

...and that they did (sans dicktures). Comments ran the gamut:

"It's not a Southern thing. I have a friend who gets Tiffany diamond stackable rings for each kid, another who gets Hermes jewelry. It's ridiculous. And I have a strong and unpopular opinion that it's just another way for needy women to get presents for doing something that women have been doing for thousands of years."

"My push present was a bowl of queso. It was amazing."

"I mean, if you get gifts for hosting parties, why not for hosting another human being in your body for nine months? Personally my husband bought me jewelry after both. Unexpected but very appreciated. He says it was a thank you for doing 'that.' He thinks men get a huge pass and the least they can do is say thanks officially."

"It's not a southern thing, it's a rich people thing... have you ever heard of a push present that wasn't jewelry or diamonds or cars, etc.? 'Congratulations honey! I got you some base layer tank tops from The GAP'..."

"When I married my husband, that was my present; when I had kids, they were my presents. Push presents are stupid."

"I don't judge a woman who gets a push present. I only judge a woman who expects a push present." (From a man)

"I did get a Rolex for 'sorry you had to get cut open.' I didn't expect it but I was so touched my hubby had thought about it before. I plan on giving the watch to my daughter when she's old enough."

"Mine was a LV purse and honey I deserved it! Push gifts are becoming more and more common to serve as a "thank you" for having gone through the entire pregnancy/delivery process. Push gifts range from diamonds and designer labels, to experiences like a vacation, to something sentimental like a bracelet engraved with your baby's name."

"I'm 0 for 2 on push presents. Pretty sure I'm supposed to consider the baby my present."

"I think push presents are perfectly fine and people should buy according to what they can afford. After carrying a baby for nine months, pushing it out, then probably being its first go-to for the next 25 years... heck yea I should get a push present! People only think it's bad because of the name. Just think of it as a first Mother's Day gift."

"Definitely not a fan. Just another way to try to get people to equate love and pride with spending money."

For the record, Beyonce reportedly did get one in the form of a blue sapphire ring:

2014-04-15-beyoncebluesapphireLorraineSchwartzbabyring.jpg

And Snooki received a Pandora bracelet because apparently her husband mistook her giving birth for high school graduation.

It's clearly a mom nation divided on this one. And it seems some mothers may not know exactly which side they're on until they receive or don't receive a post-birth gift. I definitely didn't see any moms saying, "Yeah, he gave me a diamond ring, but I was like, 'Honey take that back! Breastfeeding this child and not sleeping for the next 6+ months is the only gift I need.'"

I will say this -- if I am ever going to GET FAT AND NOT DRINK FOR NINE MONTHS, I think I'm deserving of a trip (via private jet) to my own tropical island stocked with vodka, nachos, puppies, and Sam Smith live serenading me the entire time.

But no one ever said I was ready for motherhood.

Whether you love them, hate them, or aren't sure yet, how about we implement these Five Golden Rules:

1. For the love of God, can we stop calling it a push present? I literally picture a Tiffany's box being pushed out of a vagina. If a man wants to show his appreciation for his lady giving birth, can't it simply be known as a gift from a thoughtful husband, just like he would send you flowers or take you out to dinner for landing a promotion at work? I think these gifts having a name at all is tacky.

Which brings me to...

2. If you're bragging to your friends that you got a Mercedes and/or a 7-carat diamond and/or a Hermes diaper bag for a push present over lunch your lettuce plate, please punch yourself in the face.

3. Ladies, try not to expect them, and for the love of God, don't compare them to your friends'. Every man and every family is different. You know there are ladies out there who get Bentleys and Birkins for giving birth and their husbands are total pieces of shit, while plenty of other moms are happily eating those bowls of celebratory queso with loving husbands and fathers by their sides. Mmmm, queso...

2014-04-15-quesodip.jpg

4. If you know a father-to-be who probably has no clue what a "post-birth gift" is all about, and you think his baby mama may be the type to expect appreciate one, maybe slip him a hint and let him make the call. Or better yet, send him this blog.

5. Guys, if you're going to do it, sentimental jewelry seems to be the way to go. Also queso.

Now if you'll excuse me, I need to take my birth control with a glass of vodka.

Choosing The Right Fit For Your Body, From Bobbie Thomas (VIDEO)

0
0
Beauty and style expert Bobbie Thomas has found a magic formula for flattering any body type with her unique “X Factor” approach, which focuses on the shape of a woman’s body rather than the size.

Bobbie, who admits that she can wear anywhere from a size 4 to a size 10+ dress based on style and designer, felt it was crucial to come up with a formula to help women identify their unique body shape in order to find flattering pieces.

“Everyone should pay attention to their ‘X Factor,’ meaning how their shoulders and hips are aligned,” Bobbie explained. “Once you know what your shape is, I have taken each shape and illustrated the best cut for each body type in my book.”

For example, a woman with a triangle shape—meaning she’s petite on top but fuller on the bottom—will want to add volume or texture to clothing on top with something like a ruffle in order to balance the hips.

Conversely, if you’re a woman who is fuller on top, you won’t want to add volume or attention to your top half, as these pieces will make your figure appear bigger.

“For girlfriends that are bigger, something fitted with lines that carve out the figure you want will be more flattering and will balance your figure,” she said.

“I don’t care if you are size 2 or 22. It’s all about proportions,” Bobbie insisted. “Your body shape is beautiful! Just figure out what you need to add to enhance it.”

Three Tips For Oily Summer Skin, By Bobbie Thomas

0
0
When it comes to combatting oily skin this summer, beauty and style expert Bobbie Thomas has some simple, easy makeup tricks up her sleeve.

Bobbie’s #1 tip: “Primer, primer, primer! A primer will help make skin matte, and as the days go on, it will help your skin resist oil in the future,” she said.

Avoid adding excess oil to skin with heavy creams, and use a lightweight primer to prevent skin from getting shiny.

“Smashbox makes a ton of primers for all different skin types,” Bobbie told us.

Another tip: use blotting papers throughout the day for spot control whenever you feel your T-zone is getting oily.

Finally, Bobbie recommends using a transparent, white powder to help absorb oil, though she cautions against re-applying layers of oil-clogging powder.

“Don’t just keep re-applying your powder color,” she warned, “because then it will get cake-y, and you might break out.”
