Tips And Tricks For Summer Legs

0
0
To get bronzed, beautiful legs this summer, beauty and style expert Bobbie Thomas gave us a few excellent insider tips and product recommendations.

“Makeup will help create a glow, but if you perspire, it will rub off,” she explained.

Bobbie loves a self-tanning lotion from Jergens called “3 Days to Glow,” a product which gradually builds color over the course of several applications.

“In three days, you can monitor your color. Every time I turn people on to this, they love it!” she raved.

Currently, there are two types of self-tan formulas on the market: a gradual product that sometimes won’t provide enough color, or, on the opposite end of the spectrum, a darker, instant formula which can sometimes leave streaks.

Worried about a misapplication? Bobbie recommends a product called a Bronze Buff that can help remove streaks or smudged product.

Finally, Bobbie recommends an easy-to-apply, wash-off makeup stain from St. Tropez, which is available in different shades—both with and without shimmer—for face and body.

Tips And Tricks For Summer Legs

The Best Alternatives To Heels, From Bobbie Thomas (VIDEO)

If you don’t feel comfortable walking in sky-high stilettos, beauty and style expert Bobbie Thomas has a handful of helpful suggestions for practical, comfortable alternatives.

Bobbie is a big fan of flats, a footwear option that is both comfortable and cute for work or play.

“There are so many beautiful flats today because women have demanded comfort,” she explained.

When she’s not perusing new look-books from major brands or designers, Bobbie loves going to discount department stores like Nordstrom Rack to see what seasonal styles are on sale. “You might as well buy them at 30% off!” she said.

For sandals, Bobbie recommends finding a strappy, gladiator-inspired sandal or wedge this season with proper ankle support.

“You really need that ankle strap for support if you’re running around on errands,” she told us.

How To Be Stylish When Money Is Tight, From Bobbie Thomas (VIDEO)

0
0
For those of us who are on a tight budget this season, beauty and style expert Bobbie Thomas shared several cost-effective tips for re-purposing last season’s fashion trends.

Bobbie is a huge fan of recycling the pieces in your closet you love most from previous seasons or looking for classic, “season-less” staple pieces when you shop.

“We are really seeing a great, 'season-less' wave of items in stores today,” she said.

Bobbie listed a few great examples of these “season-less” pieces, like a maxi dress in a neutral palette.

“The maxi dresses we saw floating around last summer are back again,” Bobbie told us. “Get them in a more sophisticated color like a neutral or organic material, and you can wear it into the winter.”

Bobbie suggests pairing a maxi dress with a cardigan for an easy weekend look or adding a sharp blazer for work.

When it comes to accessories, Bobbie’s favorite “season-less” item may come as a bit of a surprise.

“It may sound strange for the spring or summer, but I love a good scarf in warmer weather!” she said.

Bobbie will braid or tie her scarf to make it less thick, fluffy and warm in the summer, and then unravel it when the temperature drops.

“You can use a scarf at a barbecue when you’re getting too much sun, and then when it’s chilly inside because of air conditioning, use it to cover your shoulders,” she said.

The options are limitless. From using it as an elegant shrug to wearing it as a protective wrap for your hair on the beach, a scarf is a versatile and inexpensive way to re-purpose a staple piece for any season.

Today's Inception: Macaulay Culkin Wearing A Photo Of Ryan Gosling Wearing A Photo Of Macaulay Culkin

Chelsea Yamase Shows Us The Bikini Brands Every Woman Should Try

0
0
Let's face it: Shopping for swimwear is not a fun activity for most women. And we've all been there at one point or another.

In order to minimize the time and energy we have to spend thinking about such an unpleasant task, we usually resort to whatever is convenient and easy (read: Victoria's Secret and J.Crew). Who cares that four other women at the beach will probably have the same suit? The old standbys are trusty and reliable.

But what if there was another way?

In an effort to save our summer from the same old monotony, we decided to consult an expert -- a women who lives in bathing suits 24/7 and puts as much care into her bikini purchases as we do with our clothing buys.

Meet Chelsea Yamase -- a 25 year-old model, jewelry-maker and hiking tour guide on the island of Kauai in Hawaii. She's somewhat of an Instagram celebrity (with roughly 20,000 followers), due to her amazingly active lifestyle and a devotion to bikinis that can only be described as semi-religious.

Her most important criteria for a suit? Soft materials and functionality. Other than that, she always looks out for big trends of the season, and this year it's all about intricacy and attention to detail. Cut-outs, crocheting, and multiple straps are replacing the standard triangle tops and unique touches like crop tops and high-waisted bottoms are the new norm: "They're like mini art pieces," Yamase said.

Check out some of her go-to brands below and get inspired to try something new this year.

Issa de' mar
With sexy cut-outs and an awesome variety of fits and styles, you can create the perfect mix & match for your body type.

Acacia Swimwear
Looking for something truly unique? Acacia suits always offer new styles and unexpected details.

Wonderland
If you're looking for more coverage -- or if you just don't want to shave! -- you have to try surf leggings. These colorful, waterproof, multi-functional leggings will forever change your beach style.

San Lorenzo Bikinis
Looking for endless styles and more affordable prices? San Lorenzo has you covered.

Mary Grace Swim
With reversible options, super soft fabrics and really vibrant colors and prints, Mary Grace Swim is a sophisticated and modern choice. Bonus: their full-coverage options strike the perfect balance between modesty and sexy!

Want more? Yamase recommends Mikoh for their innovations and more modest cuts, Rove Swimwear for their exemplary attention to detail, and Seea's surf suits and booty shorts for the perfect mix of fashion and function.

Shailene Woodley Tells InStyle What The Best Part About Having A Small Chest Is

0
0
Shailene Woodley may not be too comfortable chopping off her hair, but when it comes to body confidence, she seems to be doing just fine.

The "Fault in Our Stars" actress is InStyle's June cover girl, and exudes spring gorgeousness in a Dolce and Gabbana dress and Marni sandals (that we NEED, pronto.) Inside the glossy, she talks dating, her generation and how she feels about her body:

"I’m in a place where I feel healthier than I’ve ever been, and my body is exactly where it wants to be. I feel like I’m a woman. My boobs shrank. No one tells you that when you lose weight. No bra, no problem."

While some of us may be jealous of the fact that she doesn't have to wear a bra, it's certainly refreshing to see that a 22-year-old, who serves as a role model for young women, has a positive attitude when it comes to how she looks.

Check out the beautiful cover and to read the entire article, head over to InStyle.com or pick up your copy of InStyle, which hits newsstands May 16.

11 Things Wedding Planners Can't Say To Your Face

0
0
By Elizabeth Mitchell for Brides

Your planner is there to help you bring your dream wedding to life. That said, a wedding planner is not your personal assistant or your family therapist — even if some brides believe that's part of the job description. Of course, planners can't tell their clients they're acting like a bridezilla, but they can tell us! Here, wedding planners reveal the things they don't have the heart to say to your face. Take notes, ladies.

  • "We want you to make your own decisions. This is your wedding. Yes, flexible couples are the dream to any planner but indecisive clients can be a nightmare. It makes both of our roles so much more difficult when a client can't make a single decision without us. The perfect combination is a nice collaboration of ideas." — Celebrity Event Designer Brett Galley from Hollywood POP

  • "You are not a professional event planner so please stop acting like you know everything about weddings after reading two blog articles and surfing Pinterest." — Event Planner Shimona Mayo, Author of Power Plays for Brides

  • "I cannot be your secret-bearer. If you want to lie to your family about wedding costs, do so on your own and leave me out of it!" — Celebrity Wedding Planner Donnie Brown of Donnie Brown Weddings and Events

  • "Our contract clearly outlines what we have offered to assist you with. We often go above and beyond this, but sometimes you take advantage. We are not your personal assistants." — Mindy Home, Senior Events Manager at AE Events

  • "I'm not your friend, I'm your wedding planner. Don't call me to cry about fights with your bridesmaids or the groom. If it's a real problem, email me to schedule a conference call. But share your personal trials and tribulations with your mother and maid of honor. I'm not being paid to hear the details about how badly behaved some of your wedding party and family are prior to arrival unless you think they're going to misbehave at the actual wedding. The only reason to call me after 9 p.m. without a prescheduled call is if the groom is on fire and if you are getting married next week." — Professional Wedding Planner Sandy Malone of Weddings in Vieques

  • "We cannot stop time, create more time or get your time back. We'd love it if we could! We give you deadlines for a reason. If they aren't followed, unfortunately you may lose time, lose a vendor or incur rush fees." — Sojourner Auguste, Owner of Erganic Design

  • "Don't get hyper focused on certain layout details. Where your cake table goes or what side the favor box is on is not something that you need to stress about. Many times wedding planners make game day decisions on layout and you, and especially your guests, will never know the difference. Let the wedding planner worry about the minutiae." — Robyn Bruns, President of Red Letter Event Planning

  • "Do not call, text and email on the same issue within a short timespan. I usually have a rapid fast response time and my clients know this, but they should also know that I can't respond when I am meeting with another client or vendor. Leaving a voicemail and then following up five minutes later with an email to say, 'I left you a voice mail' and then a text that says, 'Please check your voice mail' 10 minutes after that doesn't help you get a response sooner." — Tracie Domino, Founder & Creative Director of Tracie Domino Events

  • "Wedding planners and designers don't make as much money as you think. This job is a labor of love. Sometimes when someone asks about the cost of my services their eyes get big and I hear, 'Oh you're rich.' What you have to take into account are how many hours I have to work in order to earn my fee. I pay for my gas, overhead, health insurance, staff. In other words, I am an independent contractor. Most weddings I plan are at least 12 months away. So in order to get a better idea of how much I make, take my fee and divide that by 365 days." — Certified Green Event Designer Veronica Cole

  • "A wedding theme is just that, one theme! Not a whole mix match of Pinterest concepts all mashed together. There is such a thing as too much." — Matiana Mitchell of Matiana Mitchell Designs

  • "Unless he wants to go, don't drag your fiancé to all of your appointments (and be ok with it!)" — Gabriela Solano, wedding planner at VIDA Floral and florist on BloomNation.com

'Bachelorette' Star Andi Dorfman Suffers Brutal Photoshop Fail

0
0
Here we have a horrifically photoshopped still for the upcoming season of the "Bachelorette." Andi Dorfman's promotional photo includes the signature rose and vacant gaze of really any previous ad for the show, but this one also appears to be missing her entire shoulder. As Jezebel notes, her hands also seem to have undergone some major retouching, but luckily they have not been mercilessly chopped off in the way of the left half of her body.

bachelorette

Maybe we ought to consider the fact that Andi Dorfman has lost her entire shoulder in some kind of accident. Perhaps she was hang gliding in Thailand or bungee jumping in a rainforest -- as bachelorette's from ABC's hit show "The Bachelorette" are wont to do -- and something went tragically wrong. Although, in this photo of her and Chris Harrison from two months ago, she had at least two shoulders / we can almost definitely blame photoshop.

Of course, if there were a hero of the hot mess that was Juan Pablo's season of "The Bachelor," it was Andi Dorfman. So, we wish her all the best in this upcoming season, and also hope that she still has approximately two shoulders.

The Eye Brightening Trick That Changed This Mom's Life Forever

For the month of May, HuffPost Style is turning the camera's focus on fabulous moms and moms-to-be in our Beauty Street Style series. Beauty maven and mom, Laura Kenney, is sharing some solid advice with our readers.

If your mental picture of a mother is a run-down woman, then it's time that you clear your head. Sure, moms often work until they're exhausted to make sure that their loved ones are well taken care of. But, they're also in the know on how to look fabulous on very little sleep.

While most mothers rely solely on concealers to mask tired-looking eyes, YouBeauty Editor in Chief and Co-Founder Laura Kenney has another secret: eyelash extensions.

"I get very natural-looking ones from EyeLure in SoHo once a month and they've changed my life," she told HuffPost. "They instantly open up and frame my eyes (the darker lashes help the whites of my eyes look whiter), and I don't wear mascara anymore, which keeps my eyes looking awake all day because I no longer have black flakes and smudges under my eyes!"

Laura added, "All I need is a dab of RMS Beauty's Living Luminizer on my lids, which leaves a beautiful, glistening wet look, and hello, eight hours of sleep (when I've really had only four). And I go during lunch, so it doesn’t cut into my family time."

See, it is possible to take care of yourself and still rock as a mom!

Jacqueline Kennedy Letters Reveal Feelings On Marriage To John F. Kennedy

0
0
Newly discovered letters reveal Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy's feelings about her marriage to President John F. Kennedy and reaction to his death. The 14 years of correspondence with an Irish priest will be auctioned in Ireland in June, The Irish Times reported.

In the letters with Fr. Joseph Leonard, Kennedy wrote in 1952 that her time with the then-senator gave her "an amazing insight on politicians -- they really are a breed apart."

She also wrote that then-boyfriend Kennedy was consumed by ambition "like Macbeth," and she noted her concern that Kennedy might be like her father, John Vernou Bouvier, a Wall Street stockbroker and socialite.

"He's like my father in a way -- loves the chase and is bored with the conquest -- and once married needs proof he's still attractive, so flirts with other women and resents you. I saw how that nearly killed Mummy," she wrote.

In 1953, the year Kennedy married the senator, she wrote to Leonard: "Maybe I'm just dazzled and picture myself in a glittering world of crowned heads and Men of Destiny -- and not just a sad little housewife. ... That world can be very glamorous from the outside -- but if you're in it -- and you're lonely -- it could be a Hell."

A year later, she wrote, "I love being married much more than I did even in the beginning."

Kennedy met Leonard, a Vincentian priest in Dublin, in 1950 when she was visiting Ireland. However, Kennedy saw Leonard only one other time, while she was visiting Ireland with her husband in 1955.

After JFK's assassination in 1963, Kennedy wrote that she was having difficulty finding comfort in her Catholic faith. However, "I have to think there is a God -- or I have no hope of finding Jack again."

In her last letter to the priest, before his death in 1964, she wrote, "I feel more cruelly every day what I have lost -- I always would have rather lost my life than lost Jack."

Jacqueline Kennedy died in 1994 at the age of 64. She never published an autobiography.

Philip Sheppard, a spokesman for the auction house selling the letters, called the words "in effect, her autobiography for the years 1950-1964." The lot includes 33 letters as well as 21 other pieces of correspondence and photos associated with Kennedy and Leonard, the New York Post reported.

The Irish Times said a reporter was told about the letters by the auction house and had an arrangement that allowed the publication to quote only a certain number of letters, and none of them in full, according to The Washington Post.

More Than 60 Models Under Arrest In China

China has emerged at the forefront of the fashion conversation with major brands such as Burberry, Dior Homme, and, most recently, Michael Kors hosting blowouts in Shanghai to build their respective presences in the region. Over the past few days, however, the country has earned negative attention after a group of more than 60 foreign models were taken into custody by officials for working illegally under tourist visas (as opposed to obtaining correct Schengen or working permits).

AmfAR Cannes Gala Goes Red

If Marilyn Monroe were still alive, she would surely wear red to this year’s Cinema Against AIDS gala.

The amfAR benefit on May 22, widely considered the social highlight of the annual Cannes Film Festival in France, will stage a red-themed fashion show of gowns created for the occasion. After shining a spotlight on the colors black and gold in previous years, Carine Roitfeld, who is overseeing the runway show for the third time, said she wanted to dedicate the show to Monroe.

Burqa Makes Surprising Fashion Statement In New Ad

0
0
Sure to generate attention -- and perhaps even controversy -- a new ad for men's fashion label Paisley features a figure in a burqa having lunch, shopping for a goldfish and going about the day. Eventually the Rolls Royce-traveling figure comes face to face with a woman at the top of a staircase, and ... well, it's a head-scratcher all the way to the surprise ending, but worth the time.

"It actually might make you think," Creativity Online noted.

On the other hand, Jezebel's Isha Aran wrote: "It's clearly more a fashion statement than a political or religious one, but do we really need to keep on employing a narrow stereotypical understanding of a widely debated and diversely expressed religious practice to make a fashion statement?"

What do you think of the ad? Watch it (above), and let us know what you think in the comments (below).

Diane Keaton Tried To Reshape Nose... With A Clothespin?

0
0
Oscar-winning actress Diane Keaton's new memoir, Let's Just Say It Wasn't Pretty, among other things, tackles her insecurities about aging. The 68-year-old actress, with her trademark look of baggy clothes -- the original body concealing look -- a bowler hat and oversized glasses, writes how she frets about aging, thinning hair and drooping eyes.

"They keep falling down. It's like the weirdest shaped eyes," she told NPR. "I have also a hair fixation. I frequently have to tell myself, you're not allowed to wear your hat today."

Keaton, who came into the public eye with her Oscar-winning performance in "Annie Hall," remains one of the few actresses her age who continues to get marquis roles in movies -- and who hasn't had any plastic surgery done. In her book, she talks about once trying to reshape her nose with a clothespin, but unlike many of her Hollywood peers, has had no plastic surgery on her face. "No. I haven't done that," she says. "But I could and I might, but at this point, it might be a little too late."

In her book, Keaton concludes that imperfections are beautiful. "I feel like wrong can be right in a lot of ways," she says. "So all those things you're disappointed with in yourself can work for you." And the shape of her eyes, she writes, is something she has in common with her father, she told NPR.

Keaton has had starring roles with Jack Nicholson, Robert De Niro and, this summer, Michael Douglas.

Fashion by the Sea: Standing Out from the Crowd

0
0
It was love at first sight. I was mesmerized by the campus' infamous waterfront view off of the James River and its breathtaking beach-like weather. The very first time I set foot on my beloved university was in the 10th grade on a college tour. This was the very first college visit I had ever made and I was more than ecstatic to way out my many options. Being that I am from the northern region where everything moves a bit faster than the remainder of the nation, visiting schools in the south felt exhilarating. It was not only new, it was different. What was most surprising, the south felt like home. Hampton University felt like home. I couldn't help but notice that I was one of the few in the tour group that gravitated toward the beautiful historically black university. As the tour guide described the many traditions and landmarks of the campus, my aspirations grew stronger to one day becoming a student.

Hampton University immediately became my dream school. Just from that initial visit, I knew it was the perfect college for me. It was different from my high school and I felt comfortable. As I roamed the campus, I couldn't help but notice how driven everyone appeared. All by the way the students dressed, it was apparent that everyone had a mission. Unlike many other schools, Hampton University enforces a dress code of conduct. The dress code of conduct not only encourages the students to dress to impress, but as well as prepares them for their desired professions. For example, the school of business is encouraged to sport black business suits on a weekly basis to help groom them into the entrepreneurs they hope to be.

Aside from appreciating the traditions of my home by the sea and its standard of excellence, I immediately fell in love with the fashion. Hampton University is known for their fashion forward student body. You can ask just about any Hamptonian and they'd describe the campus as "one big runway." It's amazing to see how many of the students put effort into their classroom attire. On a typical college campus, you're guaranteed to see a lot of sweatpants and tights. Here at Hampton, that's a rarity. Even if you were to come across a pair of tights or sweatpants on a Hampton girl, expect those garments to be dressed up into a jaw dropping fashion statement. Though the average Hampton student is usually fashion forward, that doesn't mean that everyone has the same look. There is a mixture of styles that can be found on campus including but not limited to vintage, afrocentric, chic, professional and classic.

Out of these categories, I found a Fashionista that I thought exemplified all of these in one. She's a little of each and every one of these categories and it shows through her ensemble selections. With this particular ensemble, she sports denim on denim, black booties, and a tribal print scarf. First and foremost, she is right on trend with pairing the denim shirt along with denim bottoms. Her denim ensemble creates both a classic and chic look. She accessorizes with a vintage creme bag, rings and bracelets. Her booties add a splash of professionalism and her scarf is a pop of afrocentric expression. I would have to say that she represent the fashion sense of Hampton University, perfectly. This Fashionista is spring time ready and exudes all that a true Hampton trendsetter is about -- standing out from the crowd.

Outside of contributing her posts as a Style Guru, she enjoys writing, photography, acting, and singing. She hopes to one day take on a career as a writer or television personality for a fashion based publication/network.

The Short Man's Guide to Summer Dressing

0
0
You know what they say: Big things come in small packages. Unless, of course, you manage to take that small package (i.e.: your vertically challenged frame) and minimize it even more in some of summer's worst wardrobe picks for the vertically challenged. Luckily, we're right by your slightly-less-than-average-sized side to keep you standing tall when the temps turn.

DO: Brighter Colors On Top

2014-05-12-theshortmansguidetosummerdressing139948143737.jpg
Kanye West: 5'8"

Bold colors capture the attention of the eye. Wearing them on your upper half draws the line of sight away from what you lack in the leg department.

DO: Micro Prints

2014-05-12-theshortmansguidetosummerdressing139948145132.jpg
Bruno Mars: 5'5"

Caution: Large paisleys, polka dots and the like can result in drowning. Scale those prints down so they're proportionate with your body. Need help wearing prints? Click here for our guide to pulling them off.

DO: Shorter, Slimmer Swimsuits

2014-05-12-theshortmansguidetosummerdressing139948147453.jpg
Andy Cohen: 5'9"

Barging around the beach in big board shorts isn't exactly going to turn heads for the right reasons. Trade in your overgrown frat boy trunks for a shorter (and slimmer) swimsuit that will lean out your lines and ultimately add precious inches.

DO: Slim Khakis

2014-05-13-theshortmansguidetosummerdressing139948144925.jpg
Shimon and Ariel Ovadia: 5'7"

Ditch the dated, diaper-ass Dockers. The wider width of a pant leg and extra fabric in the rear only serves to shorten your stature. A flattering fit for a chino should be more like your favorite pair of lean-lined denim.

DO: Seersucker

2014-05-13-theshortmansguidetosummerdressing139948147157.jpg

The age-old adage about pound-packing, height-minimizing horizontal stripes is pretty much the truth. And while vertical stripes can do just the opposite, those of the heavy chalk variety, a la inmates and investment bankers, only introduce other problems. The subtlety of seersucker is the answer.

DON'T: Tank Tops

2014-05-13-theshortmansguidetosummerdressing139948144731.jpg
Justin Bieber: 5'9"

Regardless of how you measure up in height or at the gym, tank tops for anyone under the age of 12 are rarely the right way to go. Then again, if you're looking to turn back the clock to your pre-teen years, bring on the beaters.

DON'T: Baggy Shorts

2014-05-13-theshortmansguidetosummerdressing139948144838.jpg
Nelly: 5'8"

Bottoms that bunch and billow are never a wardrobe win. But as you may have guessed, guys on the shorter side of the spectrum stand to lose a whole lot more. Sticking to shorts that stay closer to the leg and above the knee are the summertime solution.

DON'T: Rolled Jeans

2014-05-13-theshortmansguidetosummerdressing139948145339.jpg
Daniel Radcliffe: 5'5"

We know the '80s-era French roll is all the rage these days. The only problem is they disrupt the line of the leg, creating an illusion that causes you to lose a couple of inches. Opting for an unadulterated hemline, on the other hand, will leave you looking longer and leaner.

DON'T: Novelty Prints

2014-05-13-theshortmansguidetosummerdressing139948145010.jpg
Jack Black: 5'6"

Since height and age can often go hand in hand (see tank tops), don't be surprised if your Hawaiian flower swimsuit and graphic tee gets you carded at the cabana

DON'T: Flip-Flops

2014-05-13-theshortmansguidetosummerdressing139948145201.jpg
Cee Lo Green: 5'7"

Flip-flops for a day of fun in the sun is fine. But when you're headed to a destination other than the beach, your feet should be properly protected with shoes that are slightly elongated toward the toe. Chunkier, rounded shapes should be reserved for taller types.

Any tips that shorter guys should definitely be using that we left out of our Short Man's Guide to Summer Fashion? Let us know in the comments!

Julia Roberts Rocks 'Star Wars' Dress In Honor Of Her Kids

Julia Roberts is definitely a cool mom.

The actress proved this point by wearing a Darth Vader-inspired "Star Wars" dress on the HuffPost Live set while promoting the new HBO movie, "The Normal Heart."

"I have three children, two of them are boys, and they are 'Star Wars' fans. So since there are no Legos made of me and I am not in the 'Star Wars' movies, I have this fabulous Preen dress," Roberts told host Ricky Camilleri, adding, "and my boys think I'm like a superhero when I do something like this for them."

She also wore Preen's Darth Vader shirt on "Jimmy Kimmel Live" last week, pairing the graphic blouse with tailored shorts and hot pink pumps.

Preen debuted their "Star Wars"-themed collection at London Fashion Week in February. Here's the dress Julia rocked on HuffPost Live:

Summer Dresses for Every Style, Body Type or Budget

It's summertime! If the warm weather and sunny skies don't pull you towards dressing in the season's warm weather fashions, chances are you've got an event or two during the summer months that might require that you do. When it comes to this time of year the dress isn't just a great essential from a style standpoint but is among the most warm weather-friendly pieces you can wear.

The maxi dress has held the style court for a few years now and doesn't appear to be letting up on its solid position as a staple in any closet. A lot of women believe that this piece is limited to the ultra thin or tall body types, but any shape can make a maxi dress work. It all depends on the cut of the dress and the way it fits. For example, blousy fabrics can overpower petite builds or add bulk to a curvy shape. Opt for something that's a bit more fitted through the bodice instead.

If you're shorter in height, don't be afraid to have a maxi altered in its length. Just be careful that the dress hits flush to the floor or slightly higher -- you do not want much gap between the edge of the hem to the ground or it'll break up the line and proportion, making the body appear shorter or stocky. This proves true, also, with heel height and this piece. You can wear a maxi dress with heels but be cognizant of where the hem of the dress hits. If it is at the ankle or higher, go with a lower heel or opt for a different dress.

The midi dress is a big trend this summer, arriving newer to the style scene. Midi dresses tend to hit around mid-calf on most body types -- definitely below the knee. This can make the midi hard to work with for a lot of people. It tends to shorten versus elongate the body by its inherent design, so cut and fit become rather critical with this piece. Look for something that fits the body well from hip to hem. Voluminous midi styles can work -- just be aware of the role the extra fabric in the item is playing in terms of your overall look, as it can create the illusion of bulk or weight on even the slimmest of frames. Petite women may want to shy from the midi but once again, these same rules apply to your body type. For petite women, in general, volume and excessive material can overpower, and this holds true particularly with the midi dress.

Super short length dresses have grown a little tired after years of reigning popular, particularly for evening. But if short is the order, update the vibe with a sheath dress or cap sleeve cut this year. Candy colors, bright prints, and winter whites are playing up the trends in this dress length for summer. Wear with a flat shoe or a wedge versus a classic strappy heel or pump for a fresh take.

Moving from length to dress cuts and styles, you'll find a lot of options regardless of whether its a midi, maxi, etc. Camisole and tank top dresses are popular this summer, and the classic wrap or strapless cut of course have not gone anywhere this year. Regardless of taste, style or budget, there are more dresses than ever to choose from once you've got a cut in mind and understand what will be the perfect fit.
