How Runaway Cellist Kelsey Lu McJunkins Found Her Inner Beauty And Strength (VIDEO)

Style isn't always about the clothes you wear.

The What’s Underneath Project from StyleLikeU is an attempt to show the connection between personality, body and style. The video series features brutally honest interviews with individuals while disrobing down to their skivvies.

The project's latest subject, Kelsey Lu McJunkins, grew up in a strict, Jehovah’s Witness, interracial North Carolina household.

Between religious meetings, church, field service -- all under the intense scrutiny of her parents -- McJunkins felt smothered.

Unable to pursue her passion for the cello, McJunkin took her talent to the University of North Carolina School of the Arts where she was promptly offered entry to the music program.

But McJunkins was unable to keep her studies a secret, and her mother’s abusive disapproval pushed her to flee home.

“Music was literally my escape... Music was everything. It was my only way of expressing, it still is.”

Yet even with an near full scholarship, the runaway teen found herself struggling to make ends meet. Looking back on her brief stint as a stripper, McJunkins recognized the choice of survival is one that she does not regret.

“I paid for my books, I paid rent. I did what I needed to do.”

Since then young cellist has rekindled a close bond with her parents and lives in Brooklyn, New York. As for advice to her advice to her fourteen-year-old self?

“Don’t be afraid to be yourself. There’s a reason for everything. What you’re thinking about and how you’re feeling about life shouldn’t be ignored.”

In an age when marriage proposals frequently go viral, there's a lot of pressure to capture the big moment in just the right way.

But what if you don't have a four-man camera crew or Hollywood-worthy film editing skills? That's where Ring Cam comes in.

The Ring Cam, which was launched in October 2013, is basically a ring box with a tiny camera inside. So when it's time to pop the question, the bride- or groom-to-be's reaction is instantly captured.

ring cam

Ring Cam is the brainchild of four college students from Michigan. One of its creators, Scott Brandonisio, sat down with Good Morning America to discuss the perks of the new device.

"Only the person proposing actually knows its there," he explained. "So you're able to capture that genuine element of surprise."

Indeed, most viral proposal videos involve elaborate schemes in which camera men are clearly visible. As you can see from Ring Cam's past proposals, the shocked reactions are the best part of the videos.

The gadget can be purchased for $149.00 to $249.00 from the company's website, or you can rent the box for just $99.

Be sure to watch the Good Morning America segment above for more info.

Best Tweets: What Women Said On Twitter This Week

When the release of the "Fifty Shades Of Grey" movie trailer fell on the same day as National Tequila Day, the witty women of Twitter took this opportunity to make some hilarious 140-character jokes. Gennefer Gross put the two seemingly-unrelated subjects together when she tweeted: "When being lured into an S&M chamber feels wrong, tequila makes it alright. - Fifty Shades of Grey trailer, sponsored by #NationalTequilaDay." Tequila really does make everything better.

Erin Gloria Ryan decided to destroy our Christian Grey fantasies with logic after she tweeted: "The least feasible aspect of Fifty Shades of Grey is that its male main character is a 27-year-old man who has his life figured out." Can't a girl dream?

While some were questioning the realism of the "Fifty Shades" storyline, other tweeters just dropped truth bombs: "Look, guys. The Fifty Shades of Grey trailer is amazing. There are going to be so many babies in December and January," tweeted Roxane Gay.

If You Plan On Wearing Nude, Read This First

Nude is one of the trickiest shades to pull off. And this week, Maggie Gyllenhaal tripped up wearing a flesh-colored jumpsuit thus proving our point.

A basic rule: When it comes to nude, finding the right color is crucial as it can easily become unflattering and wash you out. A good tip is to always go with a nude color that is a few shades lighter or darker than your natural skin tone to ensure that you don't look naked.

Check out Gyllenhaal's nude ensemble fail below along with a few other bad looks from Hollywood.

Maggie Gyllenhaal

maggie

Here, Gyllenhaal picked a nude tone that is blending into her skin and doing nothing for her complexion. Had she picked a slightly darker color it would have really popped. Those black shoes are also too heavy with the jumpsuit.

Rachel McAdams

mcadams

The actress' one-shouldered, printed dress with extra volume at the hip has too many competing elements. McAdams should have scaled back with a sleeker silhouette.

Zoe Kazan

zoe

The top and the bottom of this dress don't look like they belong together. The upper half is a different fabric and has a fashion-forward feel, while the shiny skirt looks like a prom dress gone wrong.

Lily Rabe

lily

The "American Horror Story" star picked a bad color. This top and skirt combo is blending together, the fabric is bizarre and the length is awkward. It should have been slightly longer or shorter for a more flattering effect.

Aubrey Plaza

aubrey

First of all, velvet in the middle of July? That makes zero sense to us. Then, Plaza went and paired it with a white ruffle collar which makes it look like she is starring in a Shakespeare play. The ruffle detail needed to be wore with a more modern dress to bring the outfit into the 21st century.

What Size Are You, Really?

J. Crew has introduced it's newest size: 000. Translating to a woman with a 23" waist, the Internet went into an uproar, with many people stating that this new size introduction creates difficult standards for women to physically achieve. This created a huge discussion surrounding sizing, global retail markets, and vanity sizing.

There was a blaze of opinions around this new size -- most negative. The National Eating Disorders Association released a statement:

We are disappointed that J.Crew is competing in the race to achieve a new low in marketing which promotes poor self-esteem and dangerous weight-loss behaviors. The company's new, 000 sizing will only triple the practice of unhealthy dieting in a society obsessed with skinny.

Retail customers and people sounded off on Twitter -- both negative and positive.

In May 2014, J.Crew opened two Hong Kong locations. According to CEO Mickey Drexler, the company plans to open up five or six more locations within the next five to six years. J.Crew responded to the backlash, claiming that the new size addition had nothing to do with "vanity sizing" and explained the decision was based on their growing Asian market and the desire to attract and satisfy their global customers.

"Our sizes typically run big and the Asia market runs small," a spokeswoman for J.Crew stated.

J.Crew, one of First Lady Michelle Obama's favorite brands, does run the size gamut: they offer up to a size 16, cuts in both tall and petite as well as shoe sizes ranging from 5-12. With all this backlash to the newly introduced 000, it's interesting that criticism of size offerings for companies like Lane Bryant or Ashley Stewart, both offering clothing up to size 28, are virtually nonexistent.

The idea of clothing sizes has drastically changed over the years as America continues to increase. Marilyn Monroe is often credited for wearing a size 14/16, which translates to about a size 4/6 today. America's sizing system that existed prior to the 1940's was first developed for menswear. In the early decades of the 20th Century, womens' sizing was done solely off bust measurements. This was quite troublesome to the Mail Order Association of America during the 1930's, when women were understandably returning clothing due to poor fit. The U.S. Government attempted to solve this challenge and awarded statisticians Ruth O'Brien and William Shelton a grant to fund a nationwide survey of women's measurements. The results created a complicated size system of about 27 different sizes. This was re-analyzed by the National Bureau of Standards which created a national size system that was required to be followed by the pattern-making industry in 1958. What was originally met with enthusiasm was eventually abandoned in the 1980's. In a response to America's expanding waistline and egos, the U.S. Department of Commerce got rid of the uniform sizing system, thus creating a varied size system and birthing the idea of "vanity sizing."

Vanity sizing is a term to define a marketing tool utilized by retailers in which they make clothes bigger, yet mark them as a smaller size to create a euphoric feeling in women about being smaller, thus encouraging them to buy more. Since there is technically no longer a legal U.S. sizing system to be followed by retailers, whether you are a size 0, 6, 8, or 12 -- it's not necessarily consistent. Knowing this information, women should feel less restrained by sizes. However, size shaming, the practice of making an individual feel inferior due to the size or shape of her body, is prevalent in society today. Approximately 91 percent of women are unhappy with their bodies and resort to dieting to achieve their ideal body shape. Unfortunately, only 5 percent of women naturally possess the body often portrayed in American media. With these startling statistics illustrating that a majority of women are unhappy with their bodies, it's time for us to wake up and realize that size shaming is not cool -- whether you are a XXXS or an XXXL.

Making a woman feel insecure regarding how much cloth it takes to cover her body further perpetuates the misogynistic idea that a woman's body is her greatest asset. J.Crew's introduction of a size 000 is a business move, not a personal one. Their response to retail opportunities within the Chinese market is for customer satisfaction and further illustrates how absurd the size system truly is. J.Crew's decision to introduce this additional size is just on the smaller end of the spectrum (with large financial opportunities) of offering all women fashion. Regardless of whether a woman is a 000 or a voluptuous size 18, she deserves to have fashionable clothing that fits her well.

Lea Michele Proves That The Ponytail Is Anything But Plain

A ponytail is our go-to hairstyle when we have very little time or don't know what else to do with our locks. But somehow it never looks as beautiful as Lea Michele's did this past week.

The "Glee" actress attended the Giffoni Film Festival in Italy wearing a perfectly tousled ponytail that accentuated her ombré hair color. And we love how she wore this simple hairstyle with a sophisticated little black dress, proving you don't need a fancy updo for a formal outfit.

Check out Lea Michele's ponytail below and see which other celebrities made this week's best and worst beauty list.

BEST: Lea Michele

Michele's anything-but-plain ponytail and teal eyeliner on her lower lids make for an effortless summer hair and makeup combo.

BEST: Rachel McAdams

Wowzers! We haven't seen a smokey cat-eye this perfect in a very long time. But the sultry eyeshadow makes McAdams' hazel eyes pop and it pairs well with her sheer coral lipstick.

BEST: Zoe Saldana

This maybe mommy-to-be is positively glowing with her bronzed skin, neutral smokey eye makeup and glossy red lips. Saldana's faux bob is a look anyone can recreate and not worry about committing to a haircut.

BEST: Mindy Kaling

Our favorite funny girl looks fabulous wearing her brunette tresses straight and pulled back to showcase her smokey eyes and bright red lipstick.

WORST: Tamara Taylor

tamara taylor

It saddens us to see "Bones" star cover up her beautiful face with this unflattering shaggy hairstyle and pewter eyeshadow. Her saving grace, though, is that raspberry lip gloss.

WORST: Lauren Worsham

lauren worsham

Worsham's pompadour-purple ponytail, false eyelashes, frosty white eye makeup and bubble gum pink lipstick makes her look like she's trying very hard to look youthful.

WORST: Pixie Lott

pixie lott

Lott's cornstarch yellow curls (and crisp denim outfit) brings back memories of Jessica Simpson during her Daisy Duke days. The hair color is too harsh for her skin tone and makes the English singer look like she's wearing a wig.

WORST: Lena Hall

The Deafening lead singer's blunt bangs, heavy side braid and thick framed glasses creates this very dark look that takes away from her piercing blue eyes and porcelain complexion.

Sabina Altynbekova Is Too Beautiful To Play Volleyball, Critics Say

A teenage volleyball player from Kazakhstan is coming under fire, but it's not because of her skills. It's because of her looks.

Critics say Sabina Altynbekova, 17, is so beautiful that it's a distraction to the sport. Even the athlete's own coach says his team is increasingly about one player, at least as far as the fans are concerned.

"It is impossible to work like this," Nurlan Sadikov, coach of the nation's under-19 team, told Tengrin News in a quote translated by the Daily Mail. "The crowd behaves like there is only one player at the championship."

A Google translation of an article has the coach describing the team as "hampered" by Altynbekova.

Sadikov was speaking specifically about a recent tournament in Taiwan in which the young athlete became an online sensation. Fans across Asia -- and, eventually around the world -- took to the Internet, smitten with Altynbekova. YouTube videos that show her warming up, high-fiving her teammates or just standing around have received tens of thousands and even hundreds of thousands of views.

The Straits-Times reported that Taiwanese fans were holding Kazakhstan flags and arriving an hour early just to get a glimpse of Altynbekova.

While there are numerous Facebook pages that claim to be associated with her and even a Twitter account with more than 22,000 followers, Altynbekova's only official online presence appears to be limited to an Instagram account and a page on VK, a social network popular in Europe, Russia and much of the former Soviet states including her native Kazakhstan.

Altynbekova's mother, Nuripa Amrievna, said the new star had been attending a boarding school for gifted children and recently entered Kazakh University for Humanities and Law.

"I wanted her to be admitted to the law (school), but she chose sports," she said, according to a Google translation.

She added that her daughter has been asked to model.

"But she will not go there -- we as parents are against (it)," she was quoted as saying.

Styling the Summer Party: Making Your End-of-Summer Fete Ultra Chic

$
0
0
Summertime means party time, indoors or out. It's the time of year for get-togethers, baby and bridal showers, birthday parties, BBQs, summer holidays and just about any opportunity to hit the back yard or patio for a little fun with family or friends. With the summer months winding down in the coming weeks and the end-of-season holiday to finish it all off, there's no better time to squeeze in a few more fun fetes or whatever big event you might be hosting on your calendar.

The cool thing about parties and events today is that it is easier than ever to host them. Style elements have leapt from fashion and interior design to every aspect of life and that includes this one. It doesn't take a huge budget to make something unique and special -- just a few little details and simple touches and you'll have an event that has guests talking for years after.

After you've considered all the standard basics -- number of guests, time of day you'll be hosting the get-together, location, venue, etc. it's time for the real fun to begin. While the go-to default of BBQ or catering is perfectly fine, put a creative spin on what you serve with unique and interesting food, pairings and menu items. For example, instead of going with the usual catered sandwiches or BBQ, consider having a taco bar. Plenty of Mexican restaurants offer catering and it can be a fun summer way to nosh and mix for guests. Play on fruit and veggie trays with an update to the usual favorites -- instead of watermelon and honeydew, try a combination of exotic fruits like mango, pineapple and passion fruit.

Drinks are always easy but that doesn't mean you can't be innovative in this area either. Trendy cocktails can be easier to do if made in bulk and put into sealed pitchers or other containers and chilled on ice for easy reach by guests. Trendy beer brands iced in giant metal tubs or plastic bins can be another way to treat guests to something a little out of the ordinary. For non-alcohol and kid-friendly drinks, infused water with fruits and other treats, classic lemonade with a choice of add-ins like soda water and fresh fruit can all be a way to make party beverages a little more special.

Every good get-together has plenty of sweets, and there are so many great ideas and options to treat guests to sugary confections. Stores like Dylan's Candy Bar and Sugarfina offer stylish candy that can be grouped into candy bars, dishes and other self-serve buffets that are easy for guests to grab and snack on. Pre-made goodies don't mean you've got to go with the traditional grocery store baked goods -- there's been a huge boom in niche and startup brands that have sweets of all kinds to make parties ultra chic. The team here love Natasha's Just Brittle and Plush Puff marshmallows. S'mores become even more fun to make and eat when you've got flavored marshmallows of all kinds, just add a variety of white, dark and milk chocolate for guests to select.

With food and drinks out of the way, don't forget to put a little style and personality into the experience for guests. Pick a few colors to work around and let your creativity go from there. Theme parties can be fun, such as island tropics, classic summer picnic, etc. Or you can build on a few bright colors and add little details like centerpieces, flowers, etc. A big trend in the market has been giant helium balloons in numbers and letters, as well as balloons grouped and displayed in unexpected ways. Just be sure everything is secured -- runaway balloons might be fun to watch soar into the sky but can be harmful and damaging to the environment and animals.

Serverware for the party has never been so easy, either. Forget the usual plastic cups and forks. There are so many better disposable options. Susty Party can be found online or at stores like Whole Foods and packs everything needed for a chic and stylish party that is easy on disposing and the environment. Prints come in fun styles like hearts, prints, chevron and tons of colors, with pretty paper straws, plates, tablecloths and cups to add instant style to any get-together.

You can't forget party favors for guests! But don't just give something that gets tossed away or into the junk drawer, or pack up food in a boring plastic container. Container Store has a range of little boxes and bags of all kinds for tucking food for giveaway to guests. The take-out cartons it carries come in so many colors and styles for packing up takeaway treats, candy, etc. You can also put whatever beer or soda items you offered during the day into a giveaway bag. Journals make a great party favor. Leuchtturm 1917's new neon collection is amazing for any age. Tuck a handwritten thank you note in the inside jacket and wrap with a ribbon for each guest.

Alessandra Ambrosio Tans Topless With Friends

When you're paid to model bikinis and lingerie, you can't have any funky tan lines.

That's probably why Victoria's Secret model Alessandra Ambrosio went without a bikini top when she laid out with two pals in Brentwood, California, on July 26.

The 33-year-old shared the steamy photo with her 2 million Instagram followers, writing, "Brazilian time out #sunworship #cali #brazilianbabes #foreveronvacation":

Ambrosio's time in the sun paid off, as she looked stunning in a sexy backless gown the following day. The mother of two posted a photo rocking the dress July 27, along with a punny caption: "U got my back !!!"

The Brazilian model recently shared some body-positive advice with Self magazine when she graced their June 2014 cover.

"Having a perfect body isn't everything. I want my daughter to be nice, have a good education and be disciplined," she said. "That's what makes people like her. A perfect butt doesn't make an amazing person. It's about feeling confident."
