Men's Biggest Grooming Problems... Solved

$
0
0
Men, admit it -- you don't know how to groom everything on your body. And everyone can get embarrassed asking for advice about said issues.

But, leave it to Reddit to be the epicenter of advice when it comes to men seeking clever hacks to all things back hair, cowlicks and unibrows. No joke, people will hide behind their usernames to ask (and answer!) some of the most intimate questions they have to offer.

User mylittlescar, who identifies as a UK-based professional barber and male groomer, opened up an Ask Me Anything (a.k.a. AMA) thread, which proceeded to be flooded with men's beauty worries and seemingly excellent advice.

So guys, according to this barber, here are some tips and tricks to taming the unruly beasts in your grooming game.

Cowlicks

Sorry to say, but the cowlicks are yours. You will never be rid of cowlicks. The best thing to do is to work with them instead of trying to hide them. Every time you go to have a haircut, let your barber or stylist know of your cowlicks, and a good one can help work them into your style.

Alot of Male Celebrities have cowlicks for example. Brad Pitt and John Mayer have pretty sever ones on the front of their fringe. But they wear styles that work with the cowlicks, so you'd never really tell.

Brazilian Waxes

I do lots of Brazilians ( Bum sack and Crack we call them at my place ) Theyre probably one of the 2nd biggest waxing treatment sold, besides back waxing.

They last for 4-6 weeks and you get perfect smooth and clean everything, it's honestly much better than shaving I can recommend it 100% - My clients never go back to shaving.

Moisturizing

The Biggest mistake most men make would have to be moisturizing. The modern world is filled with lots of nasty pollution, UVA/UVB rays, and just a really light, non-greasy, SPF moisturizer does wonders in the long term health of your skin.

Unibrows

Waxing, Threading or Permanent hair removal IPL (Intense Pulsed Light).

Make sure to ask for someone who specializes in male grooming for the waxing!

Sensitive Scalps

I recommend a gentle but nourishing shampoo that will keep your scalp free of sebum without drying it out. Tea Tree oil helps prevent and treat spots/zits and helps calm any redness. A Professional product is more expensive to purchase, but you need to use much much less shampoo per application than a drugstore brand each time you shampoo.

HuffPost Style Recommends: Paul Mitchell Tea Tree Special Shampoo

Bacne

A salicylic acid scrub for the body acne will help.

Thick Hair

Use a serum or argan oil in it while tame to prevent frizz, and keep it healthy, and soft if you get really frizzy hair. I like Moroccan Oil, you only need a really small amount, and your hair feels incredible and leaves you without frizz.

HuffPost Style Recommends: MoroccanOil Treatment

Dandruff

I swear by Nizoral for dandruff. It's an anti-androgen and WORKS! 2 weeks of use and no more dandruff.

Working With Damp Hair

Stick to creamy / wet products. You could get away with a forming cream or grooming cream in damp hair. Just be sure to towel dry as much as you can and not to apply too much! But know that wet products = Wetter look! If you want to achieve a matte dry look, You'll need dry hair. If you want to achieve a slicker, wet look the creams in damp hair will do.

HuffPost Style Recommends: Evo Crop Strutters Construction Cream

Beard Maintenance

Make sure you have a nice shampoo/conditioner for your beard inside the shower as well!

Source

Greasy Hair

Try to go light on your product. Invest in a professional product since you'll use much less product than drugstore brand. If you hair is super oily after a day or two, Dry shampoo is a life saver. You can even try some powders, like American Crews Boost Powder but I much prefer the dry shampoo and it's easier! You just spray on your roots and your hair becomes matte, and non-greasy.

Kardashian topped off the bold look with a boxy black and white clutch.

The 35-year-old reality star has been busy filming "Kourtney & Khloe Take the Hamptons" in Southampton, N.Y. Kardashian announced her third pregnancy on the season premiere of "Keeping Up With the Kardashians" in June. She and boyfriend Scott Disick are already parents to their son Mason, 4, and daughter Penelope, 2.

Just gorgeous.

Kelly Rowland looked radiant in an Instagram photo posted Aug. 9:

The 33-year-old mom-to-be smiled over her shoulder as she cradled her growing belly. Rowland captioned the photo, "#P.R." as she is currently vacationing in Puerto Rico.

Rowland first announced her pregnancy on June 10 with a cryptic Instagram photo of baby sneakers. The Destiny's Child alum accidentally revealed that she's expecting a baby boy during an interview, in which she referred to her baby using the pronoun "his."

"Aw, f--k it! It's a boy. It's a boy!" she said after realizing her slip up.

This Model's Attitude About Body Image Is Truly Beautiful

It's not hard to spot Nikia Phoenix in a magazine spread or on the runway. The model has a look that you just can't forget thanks to her stunning freckled face.

While Phoenix has built an impressive portfolio, including ad campaigns for Alternative Apparel, Coca-Cola and Target, she still faces prejudice and ridicule in the fashion industry due to her unique skin tone and features.

"I've been to castings where the clients, photographers and casting directors will speak negatively of you in front of your face as if you can't even hear them," Phoenix told HuffPost Style. "I've been dropped from shows because of race. When that model of color quota has been met, that's it."

In spite of adversity, her positive attitude has helped her to "tough through it."

Phoenix said, "I know that I'm not perfect. I have these spots all over me and stretch marks and scars. When I look in the mirror sometimes I see those things, and sometimes I don't. Yes, I've had my moments when I wished that I could just fit in with a crowd, but I'm glad I stand out. Through the good times and bad, I’ve learned to love what makes me me."

Downtown man Billy Joel has spent 2014 performing monthly at New York's Madison Square Garden, and for the August show he surprised fans in attendance by singing "Uptown Girl" to Christie Brinkley, his ex-wife, who was in the front row.

Brinkley was impressed:

Joel and Brinkley met in 1983 and grew close while filming the video for "Uptown Girl"; they would later marry in 1985, have one child together (Alexa Ray Joel) and stay together for nine years. The former couple has remained close, with Brinkley writing a heartfelt tribute to Joel's mother after her death in July.

Rihanna Taps Into Her Wild Side For W Magazine's September Issue

As far as we're concerned, Rihanna is officially the only girl in the world. When it comes to September issues, anyway.

The 'World's Wildest Style Icon' is W Magazine's September cover star, and she looks just as wild as we expected. The 26-year-old stuns in a Donna Karan New York dress, Ashley Lloyd headdress, Amrapali ruby and diamond ear cuffs, Meadowlark septum ring and a Stephen Dweck sterling silver and pyrite necklace. Oh, and a whole bunch of awesome face makeup.

But if you think all she did for the glossy was strut her (fabulous) stuff, think again. "Rihanna came [to the shoot] with her own mental mood board, channeling the power of Grace Jones and the sophistication of Josephine Baker," writes editor-in-chief Stefano Tonchi.

Inside the mag, Ri looks a bit less tame -- but equally as fierce-- in Balmain posing alongside iconic supermodels Naomi Campbell and Iman.

If you needed any further proof that she has staying power in the fashion industry, this is it.

Everything You Need To Know About Keeping Your Food Fresh

Americans throw away nearly half of their food every year, according to a 2012 report by the NDRC. This is alarming -- as Reuters puts it, "Just a 15 percent reduction in losses in the U.S. food supply would save enough to feed 25 million Americans annually."

Part of this waste, no doubt, can be attributed to our misinformation about how to store -- and when to toss -- our groceries. In the shelf life chart below, you'll discover how to keep your food, how long it can last on the counter, in the fridge or in the freezer and what expiration dates are really all about.

You might be surprised to learn that milk can be stored in the freezer for three months, ketchup is good for a year and honey lasts forever. Enjoy!

Well, that's definitely different.

James Franco posted an Instagram photo August 11 revealing his brand new bleached blond hair. Franco appropriately summed up his new 'do in the caption, writing, "That Late 90s bleached look":

The lightened hairstyle is quite a departure from his previously brown locks. For comparison's sake, here's Franco at the "Child of God" premiere in New York on July 30:

Kate Upton Says She Wasn't Allowed To Wear Detroit Tigers Gear In Yankees Stadium (VIDEO)

The New York Yankees apparently didn't want one of the most famous supermodels in the world wearing the opposing team's gear in Yankee Stadium. Filling in for Kelly Ripa on the show “Kelly & Michael” on Friday morning, Kate Upton told co-host Michael Strahan about her experience at the Yankees-Tigers game earlier in the week.

Upton said she used to be a Yankees fan, but now she can't root for them since she's dating Detroit Tigers pitcher Justin Verlander. When she went to see her boyfriend pitch against the Yankees, she wasn't allowed to show off her Tigers fandom.

"I had to pick a side, and I felt it too when I walked in," Upton said. "The Yankees told me, they're like, 'You're not allowed to wear a Tigers hat. You're not allowed to wear any Tigers gear.' It's like a bad breakup."

Scroll to the 2:35 mark in the video for Upton's Yankees story.

It seemed like Upton was smart enough not to cause a ruckus like Elaine Benes did with her Baltimore Orioles hat. Upton didn't wear any baseball gear, didn't get kicked out and got herself a nice souvenir.

Taylor Swift cracked jokes about her notorious romantic history at the Teen Choice Awards on Sunday, August 10.

The 24-year-old introduced the award for "Choice Actor in a Drama Movie," and referenced her past relationships with celebrities like Jake Gyllenhaal, John Mayer and Joe Jonas.

"Oh, hey guys," the singer said. "You know we've had some amazing memories here together at the Teen Choice Awards. And so, I was excited when they asked me to come and present this award, because no one knows more about dramatic males than I do."

Swift proceeded to present the nominees, which included Ansel Elgort for "The Fault in Our Stars," Bradley Cooper for "American Hustle," Russell Crowe for "Noah," Jason Dohring for "Veronica Mars" and Jon Hamm for "Million Dollar Arm," with Elgort ultimately snagging the win.

Swift, who stunned in a green crop top and skirt combination, was nominated in the categories of "Choice Female Artist," "Choice Smile" and "Choice Female Country Artist."

Korean-American Author On Cosmetic Procedures: I Don't Hate Myself Or Want To Be White

$

Korean-American writer Euny Hong thinks society’s stereotypes about cosmetic surgery might need some augmenting.

Hong, author of The Birth Of Korean Cool, told HuffPost Live last week that we need to stop assuming that a person’s choice to have a cosmetic procedure is fueled by negative self-assessment or a desire to adhere to a Western beauty standard.

"I think we've gotten to a point where we're becoming really sensitive to things like body dysmorphia, but I think it's gone too far, where people are accusing everyone of hating themselves," she said. "And it's extremely condescending to say, 'When you see yourself in the mirror, do you think you're unhappy? Do you think you're monstrous?’”

Hong, who had double eyelid surgery, is Korean-American and was raised in South Korea, where cosmetic surgery is deeply ingrained in the culture.

She said she has been accused of trying to emulate Caucasian features and that people ask her whether her decision to undergo the procedure "reflects an insecurity about not appearing Western."

"That makes me rather upset, because that's not the underlying motivation. Korea is a racially homogeneous society, so there's no reason why there would be an advantage to looking more Western," the author said in the interview.

Hong described the procedure – three stitches that produced a crease in her eyelid -- in a Wall Street editorial last year.

In the piece, Hong said her decision to have eyelid surgery had nothing to do with “Asian self-hatred and white-worship,” a common criticism of Asian women who choose to have the surgery.

She joked that she was simply “vain” and that large eyes unequivocally look better.

“I did it because I was dissatisfied with my appearance, of course, but not because I wanted to look Caucasian.”

While Hong says the desire to get reconstructive surgery may lie in self-empowerment, she does not advocate the procedures for everyone. "I think it's healthy to be suspicious of cosmetic surgery. I think there are definitely cases in which it should not be done, like young children."

Wedding Invitations Really Should Be Addressed By Hand -- Here's Why

The rules of wedding etiquette are constantly changing, making it difficult for modern brides, grooms and guests to find up-to-date and correct information. That's why we launched #MannersMondays, a weekly series in which we ask our followers on Twitter and Facebook to submit their most burning etiquette-related questions. Then, with the help of our team of etiquette experts, we get you the right answers to your biggest Big Day dilemmas. Check out this week's question below!

Anna Post -- great-great-granddaughter of etiquette guru Emily Post and author of Emily Post's Wedding Etiquette -- is here to help us answer this week's question. Find out what she had to say below:

No, there is no need to hire a calligrapher to address your wedding invitations, nor does calligraphy need to be used. Printed (as in non-cursive) or otherwise embellished handwriting is fine. The idea, though, is that the addresses are handwritten, as it is much more personal for such a special invitation.

I did decide to hire a calligrapher -- Holland Wilson, whose exquisite work I found on Pinterest -- and was thrilled with the results. I love all things paper and hand-lettered, and my own attempts to produce an elegant script sadly fell far short of the calligraphy I admire. I knew this was probably the only event in my life where I could justify the expense, so I went for it.

Budget, interest, and time constraints can all be arguments against professional calligraphy. You should plan on one to two weeks in your invitation schedule if you are going to hand-address your envelopes. Keep in mind that envelopes can sometimes be ordered (with the return address printed on the back flap) to arrive in advance of the invitations, allowing you time to write out addresses while the rest of your order is completed. Whether you hire a calligrapher or go the DIY route, plan to check over the finished pile against your list of addresses and order at least 10 to 20 extra envelopes in case of mistakes.

If you do decide to print from a computer, use a font that’s more scripted (as opposed to Times New Roman or Arial -- this isn’t a business letter) and print directly onto the envelopes rather than onto labels. The world certainly won’t end if you print out your wedding invitation envelopes, but if at all possible, this is the one time to sit down with a pen.

You can submit your wedding etiquette questions via Facebook or tweet them to us @HuffPostWedding with the hashtag #MannersMondays.

Condé Nast Spins Off Lucky Magazine, But Don't Freak Out Just Yet

Looks like Lucky is about to go from being the "magazine about shopping" to the "magazine you can shop."

Condé Nast announced Monday that the glossy, which has long been plagued with rumors of folding, is merging with e-commerce platform BeachMint to create The Lucky Group, a completely separate publication and e-commerce site, to launch early next year. Ad Week reported that the newly formed group will not follow Condé Nast to its new offices to the World Trade Center and will instead find separate office space in New York City.

Josh Berman, co-founder of BeachMint will serve as chief executive officer while current Lucky Editor-In-Chief Eva Chen will be its chief creative officer. And while the thought of breaking off from the publishing empire might sound suspect, the move has been anticipated. After all, Ad Week reported in January that the publication was going to focus more on e-commerce. Chen has become well-known for her love of shopping -- and sharing her wardrobe with readers. In fact, according to a statement by Condé Nast president Robert A. Sauerberg, the new direction aligns with their original vision for the mag. "By adding an e-commerce component to Lucky, we’re fulfilling the brand promise—to create the ultimate shopping resource and provide advertisers with the ability to truly integrate at every point within the customer journey," he said.

And even though ad sales have declined nearly 34 percent since last year for the stylish magazine, the future of Lucky as more than just a fashion magazine seems hopeful. Of course, it doesn't hurt that Anna Wintour will remain on board as an advisor.

What do you think of the surprising news? Sound off below!

5 Stages of Maternity Swimsuit Shopping

$
0

Kim Kardashian caught a lot of flack recently when she suggested that "no pregnancy style" is perhaps the best pregnancy style.

"If you can do it, hide. Never leave the house," said the famous mom, adding, "Wear a huge blanket."

At first, like pretty much every other woman on the planet, I naturally found her comments to be wildly insensitive and ridiculously impractical. But after spending approximately 800 self-esteem-killing hours shopping for a maternity swimsuit, I'm starting to think Kim might be on to something. As a torture device, I'd have to say the maternity swimsuit ranks somewhere between the rack and the Iron Maiden (the fact that those of us fated to its clutches are forced to purchase our own instrument of doom only adds insult to injury).

Seriously, if not for the potential sweat-inducing issues associated with wearing an oversized afghan on the beach, I'd be cutting armholes in my bedspread and telling curious sunbathers Kim Kardashian made me do it. But since heatstroke sucks and this trend is unlikely to catch on, I will instead share these five stages of maternity swimsuit shopping with you in the hopes that they might help other moms-to-be out there cope with a highly traumatic, yet tragically unavoidable, summertime experience.

1. I Can't Possibly Look Like This From Behind (Denial)
Three-way mirrors are soul-crushing windows into the depths of hell under the best of circumstances; put a pregnant lady wearing an ill-fitting tankini in front of them and expect nothing short of a full-scale nervous breakdown. At least from the front or the side, the reason I have no waistline is obvious. Catching an unadulterated glimpse of my bathing suit-clad rearview makes me want to slap a "Baby on Board" sign on my back as a feeble means of explanation.

2. What Sort of Sadistic, Woman-Hating %*#@ Designs These Things?! (Anger)

Leopard print? Strapless?! About 10 minutes into my shopping trip, I became convinced that most maternity bathing suit designers harbor not-so-secret vendettas against pregnant women and, as such, have devoted their lives to devising the most unflattering garments possible for this poor, beleaguered demographic. Haha, you know what would be really messed up? If we made the bra cups super tiny and dipped the whole thing in eye-catching hot pink glitter!

3. Maybe I Can Just Squeeze Into a Regular Swimsuit (Bargaining)
Don't listen to this desperate voice in your head, ladies. Don't do it!! Therein lies the path to madness, i.e., nearly strangling yourself in the dressing room trying to squeeze into a simple black non-maternity two-piece that looked relatively roomy on the hanger but somehow morphed into Barbie doll clothes the second you put it on. Learn from my mistakes.

4. I Guess I'll Just Sit Under an Umbrella Wearing a Caftan While Everybody Else Has a Good Time (Depression)
The lowest point of the shopping trip, this is the part where you resign yourself (however temporarily) to what seems like an unavoidable reality at the time: Summer fun is not for the likes of you. And you can't even drown your sorrows in frozen margaritas. Excuse me, I'm just going to sit in this dressing room for the rest of my life and cry.

5. Fine, I'll Just Buy This Marginally Hideous Polka Dot Suit So I Can Get the Hell Out of Here Already (Acceptance)
They say time heals all wounds. In this case, enough time spent under fluorescent lighting in front of three-way mirrors erases all previous notions of what your body is supposed to look like in a swimsuit. Approximately 15 bathing suits into my quest, my back and feet were so sore I was ready to walk out of the store with a tie-dyed number that only half covered my nipples (thankfully, my 13-year-old daughter stopped me). Which brings me to my most valuable piece of advice: NEVER, EVER GO MATERNITY SWIMSUIT SHOPPING ALONE.

5 Shoes To Keep Under Your Desk That Will Instantly Elevate Your Look

Liana Satenstein

They often say that the first thing people notice when they meet you is your shoes. Yet, when my colleague Fashion Market Editor Kelly Connor and I were trekking back to the office last week after a round of early morning showroom appointments, attention-grabbing footwear was the last thing on my mind. I was looking haggard in an outfit I had blindly thrown together at the crack of dawn: a pair of faded black jeans, a basic button-down, and a pair of scuffed flatforms. The whole time I kept thinking "But how do French fashion editors like Emmanuelle Alt make it work?" Their uniform of choice is straightforward--a simple shirt and skinnies--and yet the overall effect is always enviably chic. "It's the shoes," said Connor as I look down at my chunky-soled clunkers. "A classic black pump can work wonders."

SEE MORE: The Domino Effect: Why a Dramatic Haircut Changes Everything

Aside from a pair of classic office-appropriate wedges that I've never worn (and never will), I do not own a pair of shoes that will upgrade a lazy, last-minute look--say, a pair of jeans and a classic white shirt--to something vaguely boardroom-worthy. According to Connor, there are two types of shoes to stow underneath your desk for those just-in-case moments, namely a pointed pump and a strappy-heeled sandal.

"These are timeless classic shoes you can throw on at a moment's notice if you're wearing something super casual and have a meeting or interview," she says. "A good suede or leather pump can make jeans and T-shirt look intentional and a little bit more pulled-together even if you did just roll out of bed." Simple enough. But what if you are into experimenting with color and texture? "It's tricky because if the shoe is in a color or pattern you have to plan your outfit more carefully. The point of the shoe is its simplicity and versatility," she says.

Another benefit to keeping pumps at your desk besides their game-changing powers? You won't feel guilty sneaking into work in your box-fresh Stan Smiths. Here are five sophisticated shoes to add to your closet, or desk, right now.

Tavi Gevinson On How Taylor Swift Helped Her Through Her First Break-Up

$
0
0
She was sitting front row at fashion shows at the age of 13, running her own magazine by the time she hit 15 and now, at 18, will be starring in the Broadway production of "This Is Our Youth," this month. Tavi Gevinson seems anything but your average teenager, but as it turns out, her high school experience was ... pretty average.

As the newest cover star gracing New York Magazine's fall fashion issue, the recent graduate is all grown up, opening up about normal teen milestones like crushes, hormones and break-ups (though to be fair, not everyone gets to be consoled by Taylor Swift). Scroll down below for highlights from the interview and photos, and head over to nymag.com for more.

On high school...
“I think everybody should go to high school. It’s horrible, and it unites you with other people.”

On moving to New York...
“Every time I’m like, What if I go to New York and I get caught up and I become a horrible person? But then I’m also like, I’m about to discover a lot of things about myself, like this poem I have on my wall. The last lines are: ‘You have not grown old and it is not too late to dive into your increasing depths where life calmly gives out its own secret.’ And that’s something that I repeated to myself a lot after the breakup and that I think about a lot whenever I feel like being a teenager is so much of who I am and I get nervous, and then it’s like, No. Things are just beginning.”

On the bright-side of this summer's break-up...
“… coming out of the breakup has kind of reignited my love for fashion, because it’s a way of asserting a new identity and becoming a new person and giving yourself space.”

On her first break-up with her high school boyfriend...
“I flew straight to New York for a wedding, and then I visited Taylor Swift at her home in Rhode Island. I hate being heartbroken, but who better to discuss it with than Taylor Swift?”

On her identity as an actor...
“I no longer get into stupid thought wormholes about identity and stuff. At one time I did have some impostor syndrome about acting, but then I remembered I’ve been doing this since I was little, actually.”

On her character in "This Is Our Youth"...
“Kenny said most girls just play her as a bitch, and in the beginning I think I was playing her that way, but then I started discovering her layers.”

On whether she’ll miss being a teenager...
“I will try to hold on to the intense feeling. I will both be glad that that’s no longer happening and kind of miss it. When you’re 14, you’re basically on drugs all the time -- the hormones in your body are so crazy. But I really loved and appreciated the intensity of that. And you’re experiencing everything for the first time, so everything feels like an epiphany. And, like, I really liked the experience of having a crush, because I was like, this is my thing and it doesn’t have to do with you and you’re just some dummy boy for me to project on.”

You could say that boardwalk foods are the ultimate indulgence. They're usually fried and either extremely salty or extra sweet. But what better way to celebrate summer than with a hot dog after an ocean swim or some frozen custard to cure you from the sweltering heat?

For a little over five dollars you get a gallon (!) of the most succulent and sticky caramel corn ever. Dolle's has been making their corn with Spanish peanuts, salt, caramel and butter since 1910.

2. Fries From Thrasher's In Ocean City, Maryland

Ocean City, MD

Once you read the steps on how these fries are made your mouth won't be able to stop salivating. First, they fry them in peanut oil. Then they fry them again. Then they sprinkle a good amount of salt on them. And, finally, here's the kicker: They douse them in apple cider vinegar.

3. Chocolate-Covered Bacon From Marini's Candies In Santa Cruz, California

chocolate cover bacons!

This boardwalk staple combines two favorite foods: chocolate and bacon. Joseph Marini III, the fourth-generation candy maker who has been selling the bacon goodies at the Santa Cruz Boardwalk, credits his success to the fact that he makes sure the bacon is always very crispy before covering it with chocolate.

4. A Hot Dog From Peaches Corner In Myrtle Beach, South Carolina

It has been a neighborhood tradition since 1937 to grab some grub at Peaches Corner. The hot dog is one foot long and oftentimes wrapped in bacon.

5. Fish Tacos From Rockaway Taco In Rockaway Beach, New York

Rockaway Taco

It's safe to say that no trip to Rockaway Beach is complete without waiting in line at this eponymous taco shack and chowing down on some perfectly crispy-on-the-outside-yet-moist-on-the-inside fish tacos. It's simply a New York City summertime must.

6. Donuts From The Fractured Prune In Ocean City, Maryland
