You might be in full fall mode, posting photos of your pumpkin spice lattes and apple-picking escapades. But Kylie Jenner hasn't given up on the bikini selfie.

The youngest Kardashian sister shared an Instagram photo of herself in a cheeky white bikini on Thursday. In the photo, Jenner strikes a pose while leaning against a column outside of her house. She captioned the photo, "you were my sun," but it's probably safe to say she's not referring to the column.

The 17-year-old reality star shared another bikini photo on Tuesday, writing "still feels like summer to me":

Of course it feels like summer to Kylie Jenner, because the Kardashians' life is essentially one big vacation.

Another major hair makeover for Jenni "JWoww" Farley!

The former "Jersey Shore" star and new mom dyed her dark brown hair to a light blond color back in August, but she was ready for yet another change. Farley posted a photo of her partially-shaved head to her Instagram account on Thursday, declaring that she was "over" her blonde hair, so she "pulled a Britney and shaved it off." (Poor Britney will never live that down.)

CVS Will Pay $225,000 Penalty For Mislabeling Packages

CVS has agreed to pay a $225,000 penalty for mislabeling store-brand beauty products.

The health and retail giant settled allegations by four California counties and the state's Department of Agriculture that the labeling of 11 different hair and skin ointments misrepresented how much product each package contained, according to a report by Fresno-based ABC 30.

Aside from a $1,200 fee paid to the Department of Agriculture, the money will be divided between Fresno, Yolo, Sacramento and Shasta counties.

"While manufacturers generally choose the container size, CVS/pharmacy has agreed to redesign the packaging of certain CVS Brand items," the company said in a statement to ABC 30.

Eight moisturizing and wrinkle creams, two hair products and a topical acne-fighting gel were identified. Under the terms of the settlement, CVS may continue to manufacture and sell the mislabeled products until Jan. 1, 2015. The company has two years to comply with California's labeling law.

It's unclear whether the implicated products are being sold at CVS locations nationwide, or just in California. CVS did not immediately respond on Saturday to calls and emails from The Huffington Post requesting comment.

The settlement marks the second mea culpa in as many weeks issued by the company.

Last month, CVS apologized for illegally charging women $20 co-pays for birth control, in violation of a regulation in the Affordable Care Act that requires health insurers to offer all generic forms of Food and Drug Administration-approved contraceptives at no cost. The company has said it is sending refunds to customers who were charged.

Check out ABC 30's report for a full list of the products.

Alison Teal Visits The Maldives' Trash Island And Reveals The Plastic Problem That Isn't Shown On TV

Last year, Alison Teal arrived on an uninhabited Maldivian island completely naked and ready to do 21 days without food or water for Discovery Channel's reality show, "Naked and Afraid." While the world watched Teal survive the scorching hot beach with coconut water and hats made of palm fronds, Teal struggled with something else.

She was overwhelmed with how much plastic trash she saw washed up across the small island. She even handcrafted a raft from the pollution and paddled back to civilization, thus winning the challenge.

"I told myself that I had to come back," she told The Huffington Post. "I wanted to see what I could do for a land that helped me survive for almost a month."

This past summer, Teal returned to the Maldives with photographer Sarah Lee and Australian filmmaker Mark Tipple to show the world what wasn't filmed during the 40 minutes that ran on TV.

In the photo above, Teal poses with plastic bottles and trash she found in just 50 feet of beach.

Teal filmed her return to the Maldives as a part of her online film series Alison's Adventures. Her goal was to clean the island while raising awareness about plastic pollution.

"When I went back, I didn't know what to expect," Teal said. "It was like walking into your home to find that it had been trashed. You couldn't take a step without [finding] a water bottle. It was a million times worse than when I was there -- and it was already bad."

Teal discovered that before the show began filming, two villages had spent an entire week cleaning the tiny remote island. When she returned, she gathered local volunteers and organized a beach clean-up.

"The most incredible part for me was to team up with the children there," she said. "They're the future of the Maldives and they're the ones that need to see what's happening."

With permission from the country's government, Teal and her crew documented the Maldives' Trash Island, also known as Thilafushi. Only a few miles away from the Maldivian capital of Malé, Thilafushi is an artificial island and acts as one of the country's main landfills. About 300 to 400 tons of trash are dumped on the island every day.

"I chose to highlight [Trash Island] as a global issue and not just to pick on the Maldives. It's still beautiful there!" she told HuffPost.

Teal wants people to see her photos of the Maldives' plastic problem and see it as an opportunity to recycle. "Instead of looking at this wasteland," she wrote on her website, "I see it as an opportunity to make a lot of pink bikinis!"

The bikini Teal is wearing in the photo series was made from Repreve, a company that turns recycled plastic into thread. The pink board Teal rides is made from recycled styrofoam.

"The main thing to do would be to stop manufacturing water bottles, but that's not going to happen any time soon," she said. "That's why I went back. I wanted to show how much plastic there is in this world and how we can turn [Trash Island] into a positive thing."

Stars On This Week's Beauty List Prove You Can Never Go Wrong With An Updo

Though it may seem like a labor-intensive hairstyle, updos are one of the classiest looks ever. And they don't have to be overly styled with lots of hairspray to look pretty and polished, as the stars on this week's beauty list proved.

Sarah Hyland
channeled Brigitte Bardot at the annual Teen Vogue Young Hollywood Party with a bouffant. Natasha O'Keeffe attended a screening for "Peaky Blinders" in London sporting a softly-swept updo. And Ciara looked fresh-faced sitting front row at the Valentino Spring 2015 show with her demure chignon.

Check out these chic updo hairstyles below, and see which other celebrities made our best and worst beauty list this week.

BEST: Sarah Hyland

sarah hyland

The "Modern Family" star is giving off retro vibes with her teased low ponytail, icy blue eyeshadow and powder pink lipstick.

BEST: Natasha O'Keeffe

natasha okeeffe

O'Keeffe reminds us of a porcelain doll with her dewy complexion, romantic updo, subtle black mascara and creamy red lip color.

BEST: Ciara

ciara

Ciara definitely had THE best time during Paris Fashion Week. And we love how she balanced out her runway outfits with simple hair and makeup.

BEST: Cate Blanchett

cate blanchett

Is it us or does Blanchett get even more beautiful every time we see her? The Academy Award-winning actress looked classy at the Zurich Film Festival wearing a sleek updo and berry lip gloss.

WORST: Noomi Rapace

noomi rapace

Rapace's stringy, parched bob isn't working for us, and the smokey eye makeup looks a tad messy. Altogether, it looks like a rushed beauty job made worse by the camera's flash.

WORST: Rumer Willis

rumer willis

Willis' hair and makeup are actually really stunning. It's her ungroomed brows that are giving us pause. A little tweezing and eyebrow fill-in would have landed her a spot on our best list.

WORST: Ellie Goulding

ellie goulding

Other than needing a brow pencil that actually matches her brow hairs, Goulding's blonde locks just needs to be brushed.

WORST: Shailene Woodley

We love that the "Fault of our Stars" actress is experimenting with a new blonde hair color. We just wish that her colorist would have dyed her roots as well for a shocking, yet stunning result.

This Is Proof That Everyone in Fashion Loves To Drink Coffee In Fall

We love Instagram all year round, but October is prime for our favorite social media platform. From hashtagged Pumpkin Spice Lattes to filtered photos of changing leaves, the fashion industry is obsessed with the days after the autumnal equinox.

Of course we're guilty, too. We love an image of a steaming cappuccino as much as the next fashion editor, so we're not surprised that our feeds have been entirely inundated with photos of coffee. Iced or spiced, editors and bloggers cozied up in their sweaters and posed with their cups of morning brew.

Scroll down for some seriously stylish October inspiration.

Cate Blanchett Is The Queen Of Cool On Our Accessories Of The Week List

It seems as though people spend a lot of time talking about clothes. Dresses, skirts and suits are constantly being judged, but sometimes, it's the accessories that make or break an outfit.

And this week, we are going to prove it. Below are six outfits that wouldn't be nearly as special without the killer accessories. Whether it's an interesting shoe, a cool clutch or a sporty hat, it always come down to the little extras.

Cate Blanchett's pumps

cb

Yes, her Stella McCartney dress is pretty badass, but those dark mahogany pumps are really stealing our hearts.

Julianne Hough's Michael Kors clutch

jh

Who says you can't match your clutch to your suit?

Selena Gomez's Louis Vuitton pumps

selena

Gomez's busy outfit calls for a simple pair of shoes. But simple doesn't need to mean boring. These double-strap pumps take this outfit from good to great.

Diane Kruger's Sophia Webster shoes

diane kruger

The exact opposite is true with a black dress -- you can have tons of fun in the accessories department. Kruger's black and white strappy sandals help to make this a fashion-forward look.

Ciara's baseball hat

A baseball hat doesn't just work with casual outfits, it's totally unexpected (and edgy) when paired with a fancier ensemble.

Olivia Palermo's Jimmy Choo shoes

Okay, we get it. Everything Olivia Palermo wears is insanely cool. From her head down to her feet.

If you frequently traverse the wide world of the Internet, there are certain truths that will appear to be self-evident: Things are always better when explained in gif form, the grammar police are alive and well in the comments section, there's no point in saying it with words if you can say it with a Grumpy Cat picture, and coconut oil is the solution to whatever ails you.

8 Things Your Friends Need To Chill About

We value our girlfriends' opinions above all else. But sometimes, their advice makes you wonder if they took a masterclass on "honesty" from your mother.

In the name of avoiding stress wrinkles, we've partnered with Elizabeth Arden to take a look at these moments and remind ourselves to shake it all off. Even if our first reaction is "way harsh, Tai," we know that our girls always have our best interests at heart.

1. They Get A Little Too Real In The Dressing Room
There's a lot of benefit to bringing your bestie on a shopping trip, but sometimes things can go awry. No, you didn't know you were "pear shaped," or that the dress that made you gasp at first sight "just isn't doing anything for you." You're entitled to live in delusion if you want to.

2. They Put Up Unflattering Photos Of You On Facebook
You've repeatedly told this friend not to post photos of you where: a) you're shoveling food into your mouth, b) your hair is doing that weird poodle thing again, c) you're wearing that one skirt that looks amazing in person but terrible in photos. It’s sweet that she thinks you look nice, but at this point, she's a repeat offender. You're almost suspicious.

3. They Let You Know That What You're Eating Is Actually Terrible For You
As you dig into your snack, your friend puts a hand on your shoulder. "Don't you know," she says, "what's in those?" As if you didn't already have enough concern about diet soda and cell phone radiation giving you premature wrinkles. Go eat some quinoa.

4. They Bug You About Using Your Phone
Brunch is your favorite meal, a religious occasion, and if you want to Instagram and text through it, you’re going to. Welcome to the 21st century, everyone. They should be thanking you for the careful filtering you're doing on this group picture the waiter took!

5. They Imply You Should Take It Easy On The Wine
As you reach to top off your glass, you notice a couple of the girls glancing at you sideways. There's really not much to say. Uncalled for.

6. They Say He's Not Good For You
Okay, he’s super unreliable and potentially involved in some debatable business. But he literally looks like Ryan Gosling and while your friends may just be looking out for you, they haven’t seen him without a shirt on.

7. Their Birthday Is Literally The Biggest Thing That Has Ever Happened To Any Of You
You love cupcakes and extra attention just as much as the next person, but seriously we're too old for World War III to break out because no one thought to bring you a birthday sash.

8. They Think Facebook Is A Platform For Their Game-Changing Words Of Wisdom
When scrolling through your feed, you can't help but stop and chuckle when spotting this girlfriend's statuses. Sure, those baby photos she posted were cute, but do we all really need to reflect on her opinions regarding chivalry in the modern age? Is she sure everyone needs to know what she thinks Solange said in that elevator? TMI, everybody.

Raven-Symoné: Don't Label Me 'Gay' Or 'African-American' (VIDEO)

At 28 years old, Raven-Symoné has a very clear sense of who she is -- and isn't. The former "Cosby Show" actress and star of "That's So Raven" recently sat down with Oprah and opened up about her strong sense of self, including her sexuality.

Raven has been relatively quiet about her personal life, but last year, when the Supreme Court ruled the ban on same-sex marriage unconstitutional, Raven tweeted a status that many saw as her way of coming out:

When Oprah asks if this was her way of saying she is gay, Raven gives a careful answer.

"That was my way of saying I'm proud of the country," she says. "But, I will say that I'm in an amazing, happy relationship with my partner. A woman."

Raven's reluctance to open up about her private life is something she has practiced since her early days as a young star, under her parents' guidance. "People in my family, they've taught me to keep my personal life to myself as much as possible. So, I try my best to hold the fence where I can," Raven says. "But I am proud to be who I am and what I am."

The actress says she has known who she is before she was even a teenager. "In that topic of dating... I knew when I was, like, 12," she tells Oprah. "I was looking at everything."

Still, the Louisiana native never felt the need to define her sexuality and doesn't want anyone else to do it for her.

"I don't want to be labeled 'gay,'" Raven says. "I want to be labeled 'a human who loves humans.'"

In fact, Raven tells Oprah that she rejects the notion of labels completely in all areas of her life. "I'm tired of being labeled," she says. "I'm an American. I'm not an African-American; I'm an American."

The remark seems to catch Oprah off guard. "Oh, girl," Oprah says, shifting in her chair. "Don't set up the Twitter on fire... Oh, my lord. What did you just say?"

"I mean, I don't know where my roots go to," Raven explains. "I don't know how far back they go... I don't know what country in Africa I'm from, but I do know that my roots are in Louisiana. I'm an American. And that's a colorless person."

"You're going to get a lot of flak for saying you're not African-American. You know that, right?" Oprah asks.

Raven puts her hands up. "I don't label myself," she reiterates. "I have darker skin. I have a nice, interesting grade of hair. I connect with Caucasian, I connect with Asian, I connect with black, I connect with Indian, I connect with each culture."

"You are a melting pot in one body," Oprah says.

"Aren't we all?" Raven asks. "Isn't that what America's supposed to be?"

"Oprah: Where Are They Now?" airs Sundays at 9 p.m. ET on OWN.

The Glamorous History Of Pin-Up Like You've Never Seen It Before

$
0
0
In "The Art of Pin-up," Dian Hanson describes a pin-up simply as a "provocative but never explicit image of an attractive woman created specifically for public display in a male environment."

But this imaginary female isn't just attractive. "Her sexiness is natural and uncontrived, and her exposure is always accidental: A fishhook catches her bikini top, an outboard motor shreds her skirt, a spunky puppy trips her up or the ever-present playful breeze lifts her hem, revealing stocking tops and garter straps, but never the whole enchilada."

Since they skyrocketed to popularity in the World War II era, pin-up images have occupied a variety of roles -- military inspiration, commercial photography, kitsch nostalgia and cult aesthetic. But the images of buxom hips and red lips rarely fall into the category of fine art. Which is rather unfortunate.

pin
By Enoch Bolles

Taschen's newest work of bound eye candy, titled "The Art of Pin-up," explores the work of ten major pin-up artists, delving into the histories that inspired their salacious artwork. The erotic compendium features images created from 1920 to 1970, largely sourced from original publications -- a rarity for pin-up literature. "I bought every pin-up book there was," Hanson explained to The Huffington Post, "and there have been many books done on pin-ups and all of them done from poor original sources, from calendars, magazine centerfolds and bad scans."

"Then there came a man named Charles Martignette; he had over 4,000 pieces. So much of the material of this kind had been destroyed by publishers and calendar makers because they owned it outright. Because of the frivolous nature of this material, that it was something meant to entertain men, they didn't see it as having any value. Even when the originals were large oil paintings they didn't see them as having any intrinsic value."

nude
By Gil Elvgren (c) Brown & Bigelow

The idealized images, sexual without being graphic, are a delicious throwback to simpler times, when a naked woman wasn't just a click away. The arguably feminist images also scream of women's liberation at its earliest stages. And while ogling attractive females isn't really anything new, examining the brushstrokes that made them is surprisingly recent.

"This one man was able to gather up most everything and package it away and put it in storage units down in Florida where no one could see it. When he died in 2008, this collection was dispersed and suddenly all this pin-up art came on the market and could be photographed, could be seen, could be spread around. It was a tragic thing for him -- he died young -- but it was a wonderful thing for pin-up art and all its appreciators and collectors. This book really documents that dispersion -- of being able to see the original materials for the first time and make a book that treated it like fine art."

Get Chic This Upcoming Fall Season

Get chic this upcoming season with the designer Cristina Ottaviano's new collection.

I met the young designer Cristina Ottaviano in her showroom in Downtown Manhattan. Her loft studio had a palpably dynamic working vibe. Sketches everywhere, dress mock ups on mannequin stands, people moving about in a hubbub of creativity and everything is bathed in this great light coming in through the huge windows. I met the entire impressive team and Cristina herself showed me how the magic happens. The petite designer, who can be easily mistaken for a model herself, has an ambitious vision which she interprets as a passionate modern femininity which when coupled with her disciplined work direction and old school craftsmanship, attention to details and maturity, is bound to become an unbridled success in the fashion industry. The inspiration for this collection was a painting of Ophelia by Sir John Everett Millais. The delicate, elaborate hand embroidery of superb quality, lace, as well as fine draping and romantic silhouettes are used extensively in Cristina's creations. Her debut collection has it all -- silk, wool, chiffon, tulle, leather and even fur. It is timeless, graceful, decadent sophistication in high style which is equally suitable for a night at the opera, that chic new restaurant downtown or an elegant dinner party at home.

For this shoot, my dear friend Rita opened her gorgeous house and agreed to be a model for some of the looks.

Here is a glimpse of the fall/winter 2014 season represented by four key looks.

2014-09-23-anyafoto_artdefete_042.jpg

Glamorous and feminine

This stunning body-hugging gown in soft shade of gray has a build in corset and an intricately embroidered neckline that resembles a delicate spider web. (How deliciously fitting!)

2014-09-23-anyafoto_artdefete_011.jpg

The neckline is the attention-grabbing element so skip the excessive jewelry and let the dress speak for itself.

2014-09-23-anyafoto_artdefete_015.jpg

The impeccable form-fitting tailoring of the dress ensconces the waist accentuating the feminine shape. The gorgeous gown will get you noticed, opt for this number when you really want to make an impression while entertaining for that special occasion at home.

2014-09-23-anyafoto_artdefete_038.jpg

Demure sophistication

My dress was a long-sleeve A-line which is dressy enough to host a Christmas or even a New Year's Eve soirée.

2014-09-23-anyafoto_artdefete_016.jpg

The eye-catching, lacy Oxford collar with a skilfully embroidered black beading is the epitome of elegance and sophistication with a subtle touch of decadence. Don't be confused by the demure design of the dress, its sensual tailoring and see-through upper part leave just enough for imagination. The tulle overlays zigzag lace pattern with hand-appliquéd beading work on each line which makes this dress an instant classic.

2014-09-23-anyafoto_artdefete_077.jpg

Wear your hair pulled back in a sleek pony tail or bun to really showcase the neck and details of the collar. Make a statement with a scene-stealing oversized, bold-colored pendant earrings. I wore emerald green clips from Dolce & Gabbana's collection.

2014-09-23-anyafoto_artdefete_021.jpg

Simple two-toned suede heels from shoe designer Max Kibardin were a perfect match.

2014-09-23-anyafoto_artdefete_066.jpg

2014-09-23-anyafoto_artdefete_058.jpg

2014-09-23-anyafoto_artdefete_005.jpg

Alluring duet

Create an alluring duet with this black chiffon and lace bow-tie blouse and a trim pencil skirt. There is just something so classic about this look. The skirt has a rich floral, white beading work on tulle which makes it very dressy.

2014-09-23-anyafoto_artdefete_100.jpg

2014-09-23-anyafoto_artdefete_087.jpg

I loved Rita's choice of earrings for this look. These fierce set by JCrew with the color combination of deep blue and turquoise brought the whole look together.

2014-09-23-anyafoto_artdefete_095.jpg

2014-09-23-anyafoto_artdefete_093.jpg

Timeless elegance

If I'd be asked to describe my style, this dress would be the embodiment of its essence! I love everything about it -- the flat, solid fabric, the sculptured shoulders and figure-skimming silhouette, this dress is so flattering and classy that it tops my wish list for cold months entertaining at home!

2014-09-23-anyafoto_artdefete_122.jpg

The built-in corset, something the designer Cristina Ottaviano perfected in this collection, is sexy and offers comfortable support without overly constricting the movement.

2014-09-23-anyafoto_artdefete_125.jpg

The crisscross draping with a small triangle cutout at the bust and artfully shaped voluptuous sleeves is something the designer so good at.

2014-09-23-anyafoto_artdefete_119.jpg

The draping further rounds off on the back to reveal the open back cutout.

2014-09-23-anyafoto_artdefete_128.jpg

Don't over accessorized, choose one bold piece like this Lucite earrings by NYC based jewelry designer Alexis Bittar. They added an interesting addition to the otherwise monochromatic look.

2014-09-23-anyafoto_artdefete_137.jpg

The pointy nude Christian Louboutin heels provide the needed length for the mid-calf dress length.

2014-09-23-anyafoto_artdefete_110.jpg

My friend's adorable cat Baron was enjoying the glorious, sunny weather bathing in a sunshine through the prism of the window. The only thing missing for this guy was the bow tie to completely fit into an entertaining in style credentials.

Sizzle up your style this upcoming season with the new, talented designer Cristina Ottaviano. Which look is your favorite?

The Gift of Afro-Textured Hair

Have you ever been bullied? Have you ever been made to feel "less than" over a characteristic that you could not control? What if you were bullied because of a gift that the Creator gave you? What if that very characteristic allows you to offer something amazing and unique to the world? Did you overcome it? That is exactly the storyline of my children's fable Sunne's Gift. Because celebrating difference is my mission, I will choose one gift to feature every week and celebrate it. The first gift is afro-textured hair. In addition to interviewing Lurie Favors of Afro-State of Mind about the steps needed to overcome hair-bullying directed at afro-textured hair, I contacted thought leaders and asked them why afro-textured hair is a gift. These are their responses.

Lea Michele Wows At 'American Horror Story: Freak Show' Premiere

Lea Michele might not be a star on "American Horror Story," but she still managed to steal the spotlight at the show's premiere Sunday.

Michele turned heads in a turquoise dress by Cushnie et Ochs at the premiere screening of "American Horror Story: Freak Show" at the TCL Chinese Theatre in Hollywood. The actress was on hand to support writer-director Ryan Murphy alongside fellow "Glee" stars Darren Criss, Jane Lynch and Kevin McHale.

In March, Michele said she would love a cameo role on "AHS" if Murphy would have her.

"I literally have said before I will work for Ryan Murphy for the rest of my life. I think he's a genius," she told Ellen DeGeneres. "Unless he wants to put me on 'American Horror Story.' I know what the theme is for next year and I'm in. So, if he'll have me, at least maybe for one episode ... Let's start that campaign."

In an interview with Red Magazine published on Oct. 1, the 46-year-old actress discussed the sexism she's encountered throughout her career, telling the magazine that she earned considerably less in her breakout role as special agent Dana Scully in "The X-Files" than her co-star David Duchovny.

"At the beginning, the pay disparity was massive. But that happens all the time in Hollywood," Anderson told Red Magazine's Debbie McQuoid. "It’s, 'Do this for me, I’ll get you a job.'"

Anderson also pointed out the insidious affects of everyday sexism that are equally problematic to the pay gap, telling McQuoid that sexism is "built into our society. It’s easy to miss and it’s easy to get used to it. There are things that are intolerable in today’s world, in terms of the perception of women. Whether they’re vamps or vixens... the expectation is that, if a woman is wearing a short skirt, she’s 'asking for it.'"

While it's always disheartening to learn more about Hollywood's sexism, it's refreshing to see a woman of power speaking up against it.

Michelle Monaghan On Sexist Double Standards And Why She's Absolutely A Feminist

What does it take to get to the top -- without losing your center? Our “Making It Work” series profiles successful, dynamic women who are standouts in their fields, peeling back the "hows" of their work and their life, taking away lessons we can all apply to our own.

Michelle Monaghan has come a long way from her days growing up in the small town of Winthrop, Iowa.

After graduating high school, Monaghan moved to Chicago where she studied at Columbia College and began to model. She traveled all over the world, modeling in Singapore, Tokyo, Milan and throughout the U.S. One semester shy of college graduation, Monaghan moved to New York City to pursue a career in acting.

The 38-year-old, who currently lives in Los Angeles with her husband Peter and their two children, Willow and Tommy, boasts a lengthy résumé. She has starred alongside actors like Robert Downey Jr. in 2005's "Kiss Kiss Bang Bang" and Vera Farmiga in 2011's "Source Code." This year, she made headlines for her performance in the Emmy award-winning HBO TV series "True Detective."

Monaghan has become a versatile actress, one who seems just as at home in Hollywood blockbusters like "Mission Impossible" as she is in independent features. She most recently starred in "Fort Bliss," writer/director Claudia Myers' indie film, as Staff Sergeant Maggie Swann, a single mom and army vet whose son forgets her after she returns home from a 15-month deployment.

Monaghan spoke to The Huffington Post about why all women's stories need to be told, how she defines success and why she definitely doesn't shy away from the word feminist.

How do you define success?
That’s honestly a really, really tough question. I’ll say that in this moment I feel really successful because I’m extraordinarily proud. When I feel a sense of pride about something, I know I’ve been successful.

It sounds like you’ve put a lot of work into a project, "Fort Bliss," and now that it’s all coming together you can sit back and kind of relish in it.

Yea, exactly. And, by the way, I’m not successful every day. But there are different times in my life where I feel that I can pat myself on the back. In reference to this movie, I’m patting myself on the back. I’m very proud of it and I’ve worked really really hard on it. And there’s no shame in saying that.

Hell yea. So by that definition do you consider yourself successful?

Definitely, I do.

Your character in “Fort Bliss,” Staff Sergeant Maggie Swann, is a woman and mother enlisted in the army. What impact do you hope her story has on viewers?

Well, this is a role that I love as an actor because she's a character I can really sink my teeth into. Someone who I consider to be an everyday woman, someone who’s complicated and complex and who some people might consider flawed but I just consider real. Someone who’s vulnerable and a nurturer but very independent. Those qualities represent all of the women I know in my life. And yet, we don’t necessarily see them reflected that much in our culture.

I certainly know that stories about female vets are nearly absent from our culture. Yet over 200,000 women serve on active duty -- they’re on the front lines and women are dying. Over 40 percent of them are moms. And so, what "Fort Bliss" focuses on is a mother’s passion to serve her job -- a woman who loves her career who’s really, really good at it and has a strong sense of duty to her country but yet is also a devoted mother.

When these women come home from combat society overall is judging them. Society says, “Well if a woman decides to leave home and leave her child, she’s a bad mother. But if a man decides to serve his country or leave home then he’s honorable and he’s doing a good thing because he’s providing for his family.” And that’s the double standard that I think permeates all of society -- not just the military. That’s something that I think has to change. We are judging women and saying that they’re not good mothers if they’re not making their children’s lunch every single day or tucking them in at night. It’s not realistic and it’s a complete double standard.

What are some issues your character, Maggie, faces in the film? And how do these issues relate to real women?

After Maggie returns home from her first deployment, she gets a divorce. Female soldiers have amongst the highest divorce rate in the country, because men are being left at home, unable to relate to their wives’ experiences, but more so because men are being left in nontraditional roles. In addition to that, my character suffers a sexual assault which is something that's incredibly prevalent in the military. A third of women in the military experience some sort of sexual assault.

And sexual assault in the military is largely underreported to begin with.

Exactly. We didn’t want to make the entire movie a commentary solely focused on sexual assault but we also knew that we couldn’t tell a woman’s story about the military without including that narrative. Maggie deals with a lot of different issues: PTSD, survivor’s guilt, sexual assault -- all of which are very common, but not necessarily true to every single soldier.

Feminism and the debate over what the term feminist means has been a huge topic of conversation lately. Do you consider yourself a feminist?

Yea, I absolutely consider myself a feminist. I think it’s so crazy that that word still has to exist in our society, to be quite honest. The fact that we even have to have that question -- shouldn’t everybody, every female, every male, be a feminist? I’m always floored when women are afraid to say they’re feminists. It’s almost like you’re apologizing for being a woman and I could never apologize for being a woman -- I’m so grateful. I shouldn’t be allowed to tell other women’s stories if I can’t say that I’m a feminist. I have to be a feminist in order to represent other women.

So, what’s next for you in your career?

I’ve done a complete 180 from "Fort Bliss" and I’m coming out with a Nicholas Sparks movie called “The Best Of Me.” It’s a really timeless and beautiful love story which comes out October 17. And then I have a film coming out in July called "Pixels" which is a big commercial comedy with Josh Gad, Peter Dinklage and Adam Sandler. We laughed non-stop for days on set, it was seriously one of the best times I’ve ever had making a movie. It’s also one of the first movies I’ve done that my kids can actually see which I’m really excited about.

Who is your role model?

My mom. She is the most extraordinary woman I know, I’m so indebted to her. She’s the biggest nurturer I know and she’s so selfless. She’s taught my brothers and me a lot of gratitude and I hope that’s something I can pass along to my own children one day.

Monaghan with costars Kevin James, Adam Sandler and Josh Gad on the set of "Pixels" via Instagram.

I feel proud to be a woman because (fill in the blank) _________.

Because I feel that I can embody everything great about being a human being. Truly. I can give birth! And I did, I did it twice! There’s nothing more profound about that and yet I can have a job that I love doing. I’m proud and fortunate to be a woman where I am today. In this country, I am fortunate to be a woman.

What’s one thing you desperately wish you could tell your high school self?

I would say be more daring and less judgmental about myself, and probably other people as well. And I definitely would’ve blended my foundation more.

While fashion month seems like a grueling four weeks for editors and buyers, it's perhaps most exhausting for the models. On top of all the travel, these hard-working ladies also face early call times and late-night fittings -- making sleep but a distant memory for most. Needless to say, it takes a special breed of model to walk dozens of shows per year, but the ones who can pull off the impressive feat hold a special place in the business for seasons to come.

3 Tips for Finding a Signature Fragrance for Any Season

I receive several emails a week asking about fragrances -- one of my favorite beauty items to shop for and to talk about.

Most of the emails are inquiries about finding a signature in-season fragrance. You would think finding a signature scent for any season would be easy, however; there are three things to consider before committing to a purchase.

When you are shopping for a signature scent, consider the following:

1) What fragrance category(s) do you like? Most fragrances are crafted of combined notes from more than one fragrance category, however; there are usually more dominant notes that stand out. Think this over to avoid buying a scent just because it is a season favorite.

Here is a quick rundown of the major fragrance categories:

Aquatic - airy, fresh rain-soaked, clean
Floral - romantic, classic, feminine
Fruity - bright, tropical, flirty
Citrus - tangy, invigorating, crisp
Earthy or Green - mossy, earthy
Asian inspired - exotic, sensual, earthy
Spicy - rich, peppery, warm
Woody - mossy wood, amber, musk

2) Consider fragrance brands that encourage blending. Bond No. 9, Jo Malone and Trish McEvoy are three of many fragrance brands that encourage mixing or blending of their scents, to create a unique custom scent. Blending two different fragrance categories can create more depth and excitement.

3) Don't buy a fragrance solely based on how it smells right after application. Ask for a sample and wear it for a day to find out how your body responds to it. You may find that a fragrance you really liked at first does not work for you after all, and it cost you nothing to discover this.
