Carmelo Anthony's Hat Game Is More Dominant Than The Knicks' Triangle Offense

0
0
Carmelo Anthony has put Walt "Clyde" Frazier on notice with his fearless hat game. The New York Knicks may have a new All-Star trendsetter in the locker room. Unfortunately, opponents may not have as much to worry about these days when it come to the Knicks' on-court style.

Following the Knicks' lackluster showing in a 110-99 defeat to the Brooklyn Nets on Friday night, Anthony rocked a bold piece of headwear during his postgame remarks. The hat inspired plenty of commentary and jokes, including tweets from ESPN personalities and coverage from sports media outlets. The loss dropped the Knicks to 2-4 for the season as they struggle to adapt to Phil Jackson's famed triangle offense under first-year head coach Derek Fisher.

"I think it's just believing in ourselves a little bit more, whether it's in the triangle, whether it's on defense, whether it's in each other," Anthony told reporters while wearing his incredible hat.

While the team may need a greater belief in itself and more time before it can efficiently run the triangle offense, Melo's confidence in his own style seems to be quite strong.

The 'Party Dress' Might Be On Its Way Out

We probably started to veer away from the traditional “going-out dress” the moment we realized the following: a night of dancing requires more freedom than a mini hem allows; body-con was never the only way to be sexy; and frankly, there are far too many pants options that deserve their moment under the disco ball. Now, we have science to back up our suspicions: Pants (namely, our old-faithful skinny jeans) are becoming the going-out norm, leaving dresses in the dust. Or, at least in third place.

The Fashion Set Shows Us How To Look Cool But Stay Warm On Instagram This Week

To wear or not to wear -- your heavy winter coat.

Cold air, you sly fox, where did you come from and can you please bring back the pleasantly temperate season of fall? This last week has been pretty awkward for our wardrobes -- it's too cold to leave our chunky coats at home, but too hot once we step inside our offices and begin to sweat.

As seen on Instagram this week, cool temps allow for layers upon layers: all the capes, leather jackets, peacoats and turtleneck sweaters help us bundle up in comfort. Transitional weather is always tricking us, but if you sport a cute winter coat for a few more Instagram likes, we're not judging you.

Scroll down for some #OOTD inspo!

Stunning Jewelry Is All Over Our Accessories Of The Week List

Fall is all about cozy sweaters and big scarves, which means that many people forget about jewelry. And they shouldn't -- it's just as important as ever (even if it is buried underneath your winter coat).

This week, our Instagram feeds were full of fashion bloggers wearing pretty gold jewelry, chunky pearl necklaces and a plethora of rings, which made us totally reconsider our bling game.

Check out the best accessories we spotted this week and let us know which ones are inspiring you.

Camila Alves' Faux Lob Hairstyle Is This Week's Best Beauty Look

0
0
We've lost count of how many Hollywood stars are sporting a lob haircut these days. This longer bob hairstyle looks flattering on all face shapes. But if you're still unsure as to whether it's right for you, just take a cue from Camila Alves.

The 32-year-old nearly made us do a double-take when she showed up at the "Interstellar" New York City premiere wearing a faux lob alongside her actor-husband Matthew McConaughey. While she went right back to her signature loose locks, we think Alves could definitely pull off a shorter 'do.

Check it out for yourself below and see which other celebs made this week's best and worst beauty list.

BEST: Camila Alves

camilla alves

McConaughey's five o'clock shadow is kind of sexy, but it's Alves' glamorous hair and makeup that really has our attention. The hidden hair part gives way to a lovely lob that frames her bronzed complexion.

BEST: Beyoncé

beyonce

Bey went back to this tousled, wavy bob that we love so much. And she knows how to keep her makeup simple, yet sultry with cat eyeliner and nude-pink lip gloss.

BEST: Anne Hathaway

anne hathaway

The Academy Award-winning actress made a strong comeback on this week's beauty list with a retro-inspired lob, subtle smokey eye makeup and cherry red lipstick.

BEST: Miranda Lambert

miranda lambert

Lambert had one of the BEST beauty looks at this year's CMA Awards. We just can't stop staring at her shiny blonde waves, lush eyelashes and creamy pink lips.

WORST: Kacey Musgraves

kacey musgraves

What would Dolly Parton think of this bouffant hairstyle? While Musgraves' makeup is absolutely flawless, this big hairstyle is a total distraction.

WORST: Danielle de Niese

danielle de niese

The lyric soprano's heavy eyeliner and unflattering red-orange lipstick ages her well beyond her 35 years. Less makeup and a more polished hairdo would have turned this look around.

WORST: Brooke Candy

brooke candy

Candy is giving us "Lady Marmalade" vibes with this gelled pixie and costumey makeup. We get that this is her schtick but it's OK to switch it up every once in a while.

WORST: Kylie Minogue

kylie minogue

It pains us to see the Australian superstar wearing this dated pink shimmer eyeshadow that's too matchy-matchy with her off-the-shoulder top.

Breeder's Cup Gift Lounge

The annual Breeder's Cup World Championship horse racing was held at the Santa Anita Park racetrack in California on October 30 and 31st this year.

The prestigious horse racing event teamed with Gavin Keilly's event production company GBK to host a celebrity gift lounge at the Langham Huntington hotel in Pasadena, CA.

With the celebrations surrounding the Breeder's Cup, and it being just weeks away from the Thanksgiving holidays, there was no more useful and beautiful item at the gifting suite than SPARQ Home's soapstone housewares.

Visitors received SPARQ's hand-crafted soapstone cooking and appetizer trays and vodka shooter sets. There were even cheese serving plates carved in the shape of the Breeder's Cup logo.

On the beauty front Michael Todd True Organics handed out anti-microbial sonic skin-care brushes. EMK Beverly Hills gave out botanical skincare products, which use plant placenta in its line.

Grande Naturals, which promotes longer and thicker eyelashes, brows and hair, gave out two-packs of their mascara and lash enhancing serum.

There was plenty to eat including sandwiches and deserts provided by Ike's Love and Sandwiches, Barry's Gourmet Brownies and Lolli and Pops candy.

Attendees also received a wireless speaker by Geekbox that functions as mini jukebox. It allows the user to stream music in several ways including via Bluetooth, audio jack or a provided SD card that supports up to 32GB of storage. The built-in microphone can also turn the Geekbox in to a wireless speakerphone! At the suite, the Geekbox came with a customized skin in honor of the Breeder's Cup.

Khloe Kardashian's Birthday Wish To French Montana Fuels Reunion Rumors

If these two are still broken up, they sure are friendly exes.

Khloe Kardashian and French Montana reportedly split back in September, but Kardashian's appearance at the rapper's birthday party on Sunday leaves us wondering if they're back together again. The 30-year-old reality star, who wore a midnight blue dress with a daring thigh-high slit, posed for photos on the red carpet with French Montana and Snoop Dogg:

Kardashian also wished Montana a happy birthday on her Instagram account, posting a photo from the event as the two posed next to Kardashian's mom Kris Jenner:

The Definitive Guide to Fall Outerwear

0
0
'Tis the season when your outer layer dictates your first impression.

With an onslaught of new styles this season, it's hard to know which one is right for you. So we took the guesswork out of the equation. The PureWow guide for fall outerwear explains exactly what each new style has to offer, how to wear it and where it works best. (Sorry, Minnesota, the blanket isn't for you.)

Go ahead. Your new topper awaits.

The Blanket Coat

2014-11-01-blanketcoat.jpg

A newbie on the racks, this coat is exactly what it sounds like--a blanket-esque knit that drapes ever so gracefully over your shoulders. Since the fabric isn't typically heavy, try belting it at the waist to add shape and help with mobility. This is the perfect transitional coat, and it's also great if your winters tend to feel more like fall.

The Cape Coat

2014-11-01-capecoat.jpg

Similar to the blanket, the cape coat also falls over the shoulders and doesn't have sleeves. However, capes tend to be made from thicker, heavier fabric and have a bit more structure (less apple orchard, more Big Apple). The only downside? Wearing long sleeves underneath is a must. If you roll them up indoors - roll them right. "There's a right way to roll sleeves?" you ask. Why, yes, dear grasshopper. Watch and learn.

The Mod Coat

2014-11-01-modcoat.jpg

Sixties-inspired looks were all over the runways for fall '14, so it's only appropriate that we include this style in our roundup. This retro topper features a flat front and is known for being collarless, which means you might want to think about a scarf (or fur stole, if you ask us). Whether purchased vintage or bought new, the mod coat is a versatile pick that works over everything from dresses to denim. Go for it if you aren't afraid of sporting a few layers.

The Robe Coat

2014-11-01-robecoat.jpg?utm_source=synd&utm_medium=HUFFPOCOATSPIC&utm_campaign=NOVEMBER14

Like other loungy styles, this coat has a loose silhouette but is fastened at the waist with a belt of the same fabric. In other words, it's so cozy you'll feel like you're cheating. Word to the wise: This style looks great with heeled boots or booties. (Flats tend to make it seem like you actually just rolled out of bed.) A great alternative to your standard wool coat.

Love flats? Here's a guide to wearing flats 7 days per week. You're welcome.

The Long Overcoat

2014-11-01-longovercoat.jpg

A sharp coat never goes out of style. Long and lean, this menswear-inspired style is a true classic. It features a flat front and usually has deep pockets and buttons down the center. You'll want to wear this style with everything from your skinny jeans to your theater frock.

The Funnel Neck

2014-11-01-funnelneck.jpg

The opposite of the mod coat, the funnel-neck coat has a flat front and a stellar high collar. (No scarf needed here.) This style is fabulous for anyone who lives in a freezing, windy region (protection!) but still wants a couture-worthy silhouette.

The Boyfriend Coat

2014-11-01-boyfriendcoat.jpg

This "borrowed from the boys" coat is designed to hang loosely from the shoulders and often features wide lapels. You may typically shy away from boxy styles like this, but the boyfriend is decidedly flattering as long as you know what to pair it with--namely, a slimmer bottom (think: leather leggings, skinny jeans, a pencil skirt) that balances out the voluminous silhouette.

The Parka

2014-11-01-parka.jpg

Dear perennial parka, you're always on our must-have list. This type of coat is knee-length, hooded (often lined with fur or faux-fur) and stuffed with down or very warm synthetic fiber. It pairs well with fisherman sweaters and L.L.Bean boots. If your area typically gets more than five inches of snow in the winter, having a parka in your arsenal is a necessity.

Khloe and Scott Take The Dog House, Not The Hamptons

0
0
This week’s episode of “Kourtney and Khloe Take The Hamptons” was particularly frustrating for all parties. It was frustrating for Kourtney, who is fed up with Scott. It was frustrating for Khloe, who is torn between supporting Kourtney and having fun with Scott. It was especially frustrating for Scott, who can't seem to do anything right by Kourtney. (It's also frustrating for him because he slept on a bathroom floor and that is no way for a Lord to slumber.) However, this week's episode was the most frustrating for us the viewers. We are torn between sympathizing with pregnant Kourtney, sad Scott, and actually caring about their relationship.

The episode opened with Kourtney banning Khloe from their Hamptons home after Khloe had spent the past 20 hours traveling from South Africa. Oh and she smelled like a "fucking bear that was outside in dog shit for years." Her words. Gross. As if her day can't get any worse, she then has to shack up on a pull-out couch in Scott's hotel room. (Mind you, she still hasn't showered.) I spent the episode silently wondering when Khloe did get to shower, as she was wearing that black sweatshirt for the first third of the episode. But I digress. This isn't "Kourtney and Khloe Take A Shower."

Khloe and Scott come home to an angry Kourtney who demands Scott "get it together." Scott, clearly fed up with Kourtney, raises his voice. Khloe notes that she hasn't ever heard Scott yell like that, but did we all forget about that time they "took" Miami and Scott broke a mirror?

Eventually, Kourtney allows Khloe and Scott to come back to their own home. I know, I had to pick my jaw up off the floor too. Who saw that one coming? The crew smooths things over long enough to stage an obligatory Tracy Anderson workout class plug.

Khloe and Scott spend the majority of the episode trying to participate in fun, sober activities but still, this does not please Kourtney. Khloe even tries to play couples counselor with Kourtney and Scott but Kourtney thwarts those efforts too by kicking Scott out of bed. The Lord then sleeps on the bathroom floor and we all simultaneously wondered how there isn't a spare bedroom in that sprawling house of theirs. We soon find out there is a spare room however, it belongs to Princess Kim K (oh, Kim, how I miss you right now).

Basically, the Kourtney/Scott/break-up/make-up storyline is old AF. I get that as they have more children the stakes of their breakup get higher but it's just sad at this point. Scott is obviously going through a lot and doing what he needs to do to get through it. And he is very self-aware of that. Surprising self-aware. He says that Kourtney is the one person left in this world that is family to him but to be very honest, she is being downright cruel. Kourtney must also know this because she tweeted this Sunday night as the episode aired.

Scott didn't want to summer in the Hamptons yet Kourtney insisted they go. Scott can't sleep so she doesn't let him sleep in their master bedroom. Scott sleeps in Kim's room because he has nowhere to go and she locks him out of there. I just don't get it. And I don't want to watch it. At least next week we get to see Kim and Kris. I never thought I'd actually miss Kris Jenner.

Oh and one more thing: When Kourtney left Khloe and Scott at the tennis court and drove off without them and Khloe rode along the side of the car, that was SO unsafe. Not to be a Debbie Downer but that made me highly uncomfortable. It should have come with a "Do not try this at home" disclaimer.

Other than that, the episode was pretty much business as usual. Scott and Khloe got uncomfortably close, Mason and Penelope were painfully adorable, and French Montana still wears his sunglasses at night.

6 of The Best '90s Eyebrow Comebacks

We're cool with '90s fashion resurfacing, but '90s beauty? No, thanks.

Case-in-point: pencil-thin eyebrows.

Lena Dunham said it best in her memoir, Not That Kind of Girl. She always keeps an eyebrow pencil in her bag because, "I overtweezed my eyebrows like every child of the nineties and am now stuck with what my sister calls balding caterpillars."

Thankfully, we seem to have recovered from said decade of ill-advised plucking--and so have some of our favorite celebrities. Check out this slideshow of before-and-afters. And remember: Fuller is better.

Mirror, Mirror on the Wall: Ageless Beauty

0
0
"Mirror, mirror on the wall, who's the fairest of them all?"

This is a true story, for women of all ages, to think about before running to a specialist to make them artificially look younger.

We all know the saying: "beauty is from within." We are told that it is a woman's persona, not her face or her age, which makes her beautiful. It is her personality, the mix of charm and warmth that makes her shine. We know this is true -- to a point.

When push comes to shove we know the word "youth" is attached to everything from A to Z. A "young woman" in her mid 30s is running to her "beauty maven" to fill her face with injections of Botox and collagen. After having a child, she has a tummy tuck. From exhaustion as a mom or career woman she has her eyes done and by mid or late forties she is off to "the best" plastic surgeon for her "first" facelift. Am I right or am I right?

"Young women" are just as crazed with the mirror as us older grand dames, except for one 93 year-old woman: my mother.

The other night my husband and I were leaving our building for an evening out. There were four very old women in the lobby, one of them, my mother. Every Saturday night seven of her girlfriends meet for dinner. They are all widows and childhood friends. I have known them since I was little. The youngest is 86 and the oldest is my mother, at 93.

I could not help looking at them as I walked over to give my mother a kiss. All of them had one or more facelifts except for my mother -- a lady who stands her ground! She had her eyes done when she was in her forties and was told at the time that the puffs under her eyes were hereditary. I knew better, even at my young age, but just smiled to myself and nodded.

Nonetheless, and I might be biased, but I swear my mother was the most beautiful of the four women, it was so obvious. Her girlfriends' faces were all pulled and smooth but you knew they were "old." Their hands were old. Their hair was thinning. Their statures were that of old women. They weren't fooling anyone except themselves.

On the other hand, my mother's face showed her life. The crinkles around her eyes and her smile lines made her face soft: her blue "unbagged" eyes sparkled! Her entire persona lit up the lobby of our building. She looked young compared to her friends with their pulled faces, who had lost their real smiles from all the tucks and pulls. Not my mother though, she was (and is) truly a beautiful "old" woman with the same smile I remember as a little girl.

So to my young friends, as well as my older friends, "be careful what you wish for." A nip here and a tuck there, a little Botox and collagen and even a peel to rid yourself of sun-tanned lines might uplift your spirits as you deal with aging in a society that places so much emphasis on staying young as long as possible -- but you aren't fooling anyone.

The moral of this story is to know when to draw the line. At what point can you be comfortable enough with yourself to revel in your own beauty at any age? You are beautiful; don't forget that. But, if you have the courage to go through the natural process of aging, like my mother, you will not regret it. Your natural beauty will shine brighter than any smoothed wrinkle or tummy tuck. This I promise you.

Anna Kendrick Has A Great Comeback For People Who Criticize Her Looks

0
0
Anna Kendrick seems to have everything going for her: she's starring in "Into The Woods," she has a killer Twitter account and, most recently, she nabbed the December cover of Marie Claire magazine. But even the lovable, gorgeous and ridiculously retweetable Kendrick still has to deal with her fair share of haters. The 29-year-old opened up to Marie Claire about how she handles it when people criticize her appearance:

“The most common thing that I get is, ‘Am I the only one who doesn’t think that Anna Kendrick is pretty?’"

Ouch. But of course Kendrick has the perfect comeback for that question:

"And you’re like, ‘No, you’re not the only one. Arguably, all of the boys in my high school agree with you,’” she joked.

This definitely isn't the first time the "Pitch Perfect" star has tackled body image criticism head on. In an interview with Glamour magazine back in August, Kendrick explained that she doesn't rely on her image to help boost her career:

“The thing is, my appearance -- that’s never been my moneymaker. I’m fine being small. I’m fine being all the things I am. And I’m happy I’m not supposed to be on the '50 Most Beautiful' list all the time, because that would be super fucking stressful,” she said.

4 Things You Didn't Know About The Mansion In Taylor Swift's 'Blank Space' Video

0
0
Taylor Swift's stunning video for "Blank Space" is basically the best thing she's ever done, and if you are anything like us, you definitely took notice of the majestic mansion where her nightmare dressed like a daydream was filmed.

Welcome to New York Oheka Castle, the sprawling 109,000 square foot estate that once belonged to financier and philanthropist Otto Hermann Kahn.

The luxurious estate, currently owned by real estate developer Gary Melius, definitely conjures up images of "magic, madness, heaven, sin," as Swift sings on "Blank Space," so we rounded up a few facts about the mansion that likely piqued your interest.

1. You've definitely seen it before.
Over the years, Oheka Castle has appeared in a number of films and television shows, including arguably the greatest film of our time, "Citizen Kane." The massive estate was used to portray Xanadu, the fictional estate of Charles Foster Kane in the 1941 film.

xanadu1001

The castle and its lush grounds and gardens has also appeared in "What Happens in Vegas," "The Others," "The Anderson Tapes," the USA series "Royal Pains" and "Gossip Girl."

2. The castle served as one of the inspirations for Jay Gatsby's estate in F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby.
Located in Huntington, New York on Long Island, Oheka Castle was completed in 1919 and contains 127 rooms. Kahn and his wife, Addie Wolff, built the mansion as a summer home, where they "hosted lavish parties and regularly entertained royalty, heads of state, and Hollywood stars," according to the estate's official website.

Today it remains second-largest private residence ever built in America (the largest is the Biltmore House in Asheville, North Carolina).

3. It's the most to die for wedding venue.
Yes, you can have your fairytale wedding at the castle, if you can afford it. An average wedding at the awe-inspiring mansion costs $100,000, the estate's marketing director Nancy Melius told The New York Times in 2013.

Celebrities including Kevin Jonas and Joey Fatone, said "I do" at the magical locale with their respective partners.

4. It's just really, really ugly.
Just kidding! Look at this place. It's gorgeous.

Man Found Burning Atop MTA Train In Connecticut Dies

GREENWICH, Conn. (AP) — A 21-year-old man found burning on top of a New York City-bound commuter train in Connecticut has died.

Metropolitan Transportation Authority spokesman Aaron Donovan says Brian McClellen died at Westchester Medical Center in New York. He was taken there after workers found him aflame on Sunday morning on top of a Metro-North train, just after it lost power in Greenwich. The train was being powered by overhead electrical wires. Donovan says McClellen suffered burns over about 85 percent of his body. He says the railroad is trying to determine how McClellen got on top of the train and why.

McClellen was from the Cleveland area but most recently living in New York. His Facebook page describes him as an actor and model.

Beyonce's '99 Problems' Swimsuit Is Perfect For Her, But You'll Probably Want It Too

0

UPDATE: Beyonce pulled a fast one on us and bunched up what is actually a dress to make it look like a swimsuit. The good news? You can buy one here.

PREVIOUSLY: Let's be honest: Beyonce could wear anything under the sun and look absolutely amazing in it. (Reminder: she's Beyonce.) But this one-piece was made. for. her.

The photo she posted to Beyonce.com says it all, but in case you were temporarily blinded by her beauty and couldn't read, the swimsuit says: "99 Problems But My Ass Ain't One." And truer words have never been spoken:

beyonce

Of course, the swimsuit borrows a line from her husband Jay Z's song, "99 Problems," but we'd like to think Queen Bey was singing "Bootylicious" in her head as the cameras snapped.

Jennifer Lawrence Looks Angelic At 'Hunger Games: MockingJay Part 1' London Premiere

It's that time of year again: "The Hunger Games" saga continues.

And the cast was on-hand to celebrate the release of the book-turned-movie franchise's latest installment, "The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1," on Monday at the Odeon Leicester Square in London. But all eyes were on the film's female star Jennifer Lawrence, who stunned in an embellished white Dior dress, accessorizing with black strappy heels, angelic makeup and a stylish updo.

The 24-year-old actress signed autographs and took photos with fans before posing with her co-stars on the red carpet.

"Something that I really loved about these books when I first read them is that they're great, it's a fantastic story, but it's also a very important story to tell about how powerful just one voice can be," Lawrence said of playing heroine Katniss Everdeen in a recent interview. "And it can be scary. It is always easier to go with the more popular vote and to follow the person in front of you. It's really scary to stand up to a voice that's bigger than yours."

5 Things My Ombré Hair Taught Me About Life

This past May I graduated college. With a summer ahead in Los Angeles, and that powerful feeling of needing to reinvent myself that most often comes after a breakup and two pints of Ben and Jerry's, I cut my hair 8 inches. And then did what all rational people do when they are both celebrity obsessed and need a life change: I pulled up pictures of Olivia Wilde, Miley Cyrus (in her formative years) and Drew Barrymore, and requested that their ombré hairstyle magically appear on my head. I am not embarrassed to admit that when it comes to trends, I am a devoted follower rather than a leader. In the 6th grade, I got side bangs after everyone else got side bangs. In high school, when Cady Herring started wearing army pants and flip flips, I started wearing army pants and flip flops. And so obviously when Jessica Biel (who is clearly doing something right, given her Justin Timberlake arm candy), showed up on a red carpet with ombré locks of pure perfection, I quickly sat in a too-chic-for-me Los Angeles hair salon and jumped on the bandwagon.

It is now November, and I have just started a fabulous new job in Boston. And even though the leaves are falling and plaid is appearing on the backs of pinterest and pumpkin spice loving girls everywhere, my summer ombré hair still sits on the top of my head. As I reflect on both the transition out of college into the real world, and my hair evolution, I realize that the past six months of donning this trendy hairstyle have not been at all what I expected. I thought my blonder tips would give me that California-surfer-girl thing that I never seemed to master on my own, despite living on the West coast for the first 18 years of my life. And I also predicted that given my track record, I would be over it by the end of the summer and ready to try the next hair trend that Allure magazine tells me I absolutely, without-a-doubt, must have or I will die alone with 9 cats.

But to my surprise, my ombré has done so much more for me than help me score some #nofilter instagrams and compliments from my friends. It has been a free therapist. It has been like an extended browse through the Barnes and Noble self-help aisle. It has been like a guru that is always at my disposal. I'm being serious -- my ombré hair has taught me some fundamental things about life (and not only that Miley Cyrus looked way better before she decided that it would be a good idea to swing on a wrecking ball while in the nude). As I begin to accept that it officially time to swap my Haviannas for my JCREW booties, I'm reflecting on and sharing the five things that my oh-so-trendy ombré hair taught me about living.

1. It's never right on the first try

As much as I try to live by the mantra "progress, not perfection," I couldn't help but hope that my new (and shiny) ombré locks would blow in the breeze impeccably the minute I exited the salon, put on my sunnies, and got in the car. That, unfortunately, wasn't what happened. When I got home and looked in the mirror I realized that the highlights were a bit streaky and barely lighter than my hair color. It wasn't what I wanted, and it definitely what Jessica Biel would have wanted, but it took me almost a week and a half to muster the courage to call the salon to schedule an appointment so that they could re-do it.

My hair colorist responded to my call (which was really a desperate plea), with no hesitation -- "of course I'll fix it! Come on in! Let's get it the way you like it!" I guess I wasn't the first person in the history of hair styling to be unsatisfied with the initial result of highlights. As someone who really doesn't like complaining and running the risk of offending someone, this bump in my proverbial hair road challenged the part of me that would rather stay unhappy than make someone else feel uncomfortable. It also shed a light on my perfectionism and my need for instant gratification. But hair is such a perfect example of the cliché line that I still love: "life is a journey, not a destination." No color, cut, or style is permanent. And that's the good news! The problem was that my hair, and my hair stylist, had a more flexible attitude that I did! I cared only about a final result of perfect celebrity look-a-like ombré, but like all things in life, ombré is a process.

Once I started to understand this, and made my way back into the salon chair, I took a deep breath and accepted that both hair, and life, are usually never right on the first try.

2. It works better if approached gradually and in moderation, then all at once.

We've all seen those pictures of the ombré that looks like last season's color blocking trend, and/or prison stripes, and we think to ourselves, "absolutely not...is she crazy?!" But then when we sit in the salon chair we begin to be overcome by eagerness. The prospect of actually being able to test if blondes have more fun is enticing. And before we know it, we're blonde on bottom, brunette on top, and we realize the black and white trend was better left to those bakery cookies at the corner café. The best ombré is gradual. It fades with ease from a warm brunette to a golden blonde. When done well, you can't really see where one color starts and the other stops. The most natural looking ombré is done in moderation, aimed to enhance once's overall look rather than distract from it. I'm so glad my hairstylist reminded me to go with what looked and felt natural. I had to start slow. And test out the waters. No good hair deed comes out of compulsivity and urgency. So I did a slight ombre, and at the end of the summer, I went and brightened up a bit more.

Once I started to understand this, and made my way back into the salon chair, I took a deep breath and accepted that both hair, and life, work better if approached gradually and in moderation, than all at once.

3. It'll never look like the pictures

In addition to being the title of a 1997 movie starring none other than Jennifer Aniston, "picture perfect" is an ideal that I've struggled to achieve for a large part of my life. Not helping this ideal were my a few of my favorite things as a teenager: Vogue, Romantic Comedies, and Lauren Conrad. When I showed up at the hair salon on that summer day, my hair dresser assured me she would do her best to match my color to the magazine cutout I provided, but that a perfect match was impossible. IMPOSSIBLE?! My hair came out a little lighter than Olivia Wilde's and a little darker than Jessica Biel and I got to thinking about why I spend so much time chasing "picture-perfect," instead of just being as I am and experiencing life directly as it comes. When I went back in August, I didn't come with a picture. I came with my hair. On my head. And I asked her to make it a shinier and glossier version of what it already was.

Once I started to understand this, and made my way back into the salon chair, I took a deep breath and accepted that both hair, and life, will never look like the pictures.

4. It grows with you, not against you

Being that my summer ombré adventure was the first time I had ever colored my hair, I wanted a style that didn't require too much maintenance (a.k.a ROOTS!). One of the things that appealed to me so much about ombré was its reputation as a no-fuss hairstyle. I began thinking about what an ombré approach to my life would be and started to look at all the ways I work against myself. Those countless self-sabotaging relationships, the nagging self-criticisms...I was more work to upkeep than my hair color. I reflected on how easy it is to feel victimized by life and to feel that things are happening to me. But what if life is happening for me? What if all the events that may seem so difficult and painful in the moment are really lessons in the curriculum of my growth?

Once I started to understand this, and made my way back into the salon chair, I took a deep breath and accepted that (thankfully!) both hair, and life, gros with you, not against you.

4. It will inevitably change with time

I'm finally getting ready to make a hair appointment and go back to my all-over brown shade. More importantly, I'm grateful that as my ombré has grown out, I've outgrown it as well. As the months went on and I began to spend less time by the beach, the blonde began taking on different undertones. And now that its November, my ombré hair is not the ombré hair I obsessed about getting perfect in May. It's transformed, and reminded me how futile it is to obsess over things that inevitably change with time. As I loosen my grip on my perfect hair color, I feel more able to loosen my grip on having the perfect relationship, or having the perfect job, or having the perfect apartment. When I was younger I use to fear change, but as I'm growing up, I realize that change is actually a good thing--its rejuvenating and allows for new beginnings, more importantly, new hairstyles.

Now that I understand this, and am about to make my way back into the salon chair, I take a deep breath and accept that both hair, and life, will inevitably change with time.

And thank the hair gods for that!

Fake Taylor Swift Explains What New York Is Really Like

A few weeks back, Taylor Swift was named Global Welcome Ambassador for New York City.

But Swift's New York -- the New York of $20 million Tribeca apartments and court-side seats at Knicks game -- isn't representative of most other people's New York.

In fact, most of the info and vocabulary NYC GO had the 24-year-old dole out to tourists and newcomers in neatly packaged videos isn't really that helpful at all.

That's where fake Taylor Swift comes in.

From YouTubers Keep It Simple Stupid, Fake Taylor Swift tells you the cold, hard truth about New York City. Like, how filling out a rental application is such a total breeze (as long as you are match a half-dozen criteria), how 311 is totally there for you and how taxis are your friend, because they're pretty reliable and they're easy to hail, unless you're anyone but Taylor Swift.
