Ballerina's Dazzling Photos Prove Her Scoliosis Is Just A Diagnosis

Gigi Crouch’s gorgeous Instagram photos reveal the life of a ballerina. Her dancing journey, though, has been more than just perfect balance and pointe shoes.

MTV News reports that Gigi has been ballet dancing since she was 11. At 13, she was diagnosed with scoliosis, which meant she'd have to wear a back brace for 18 to 20 hours a day and start physical therapy.

Though the 17-year-old currently has three major curves in her back, she’s never let scoliosis stand in her way. Her Instagram photos prove it.

Using the handle @scolerina9247, Gigi mixes her poised poses with elaborate landscapes. She has more than 59,000 followers and recently contributed to Instagram’s blog, where she explained she recently stopped wearing a brace after wearing one for three years.

Hey everybody! Exciting news :) On Wednesday I received an out of brace X-ray. My results were the exact same as they were six months ago! Often times when living and working with scoliosis, no progression in the curve can be as great as decreasing your curvature. This has been my goal for the past couple of years and I'm so happy to be reaching it. For three years I wore a brace designed by Grant Wood for 18-20 hours a day. For a couple of months that time decreased to 12 continuous hours, then just sleeping. I'm so excited to say that I am officially brace free! The battle is not over, as I will continue to do the Schroth method of physical therapy to assure no progression in my curve! comment if you wear or have worn a brace!

On the blog, Gigi also mentioned expanding her creativity for her photos. The ballerina, who attends Pacific Northwest Ballet's Professional Division, enjoys photography and puts a lot of thought into her poses and layouts. Her photos are visually appealing, but what she really wants her followers to take away is that nothing can stand in the way of your dreams.

"I love to try to explore new angles and poses daily to get an output that is innovative, creative and pleasing to the eye. I hope that my pictures inspire others, and show them that nothing can stop you if you have passion.”

Monica Lewinksy Took Back Her Narrative In A Powerful TED Talk

“At the age of 22, I fell in love with my boss. At the age of 24, I learned the devastating consequences."

That's how Monica Lewinsky began her much-anticipated TED Talk on March 19, according to TED Blog.

“Like me, at 22, a few of you may also have taken wrong turns by falling in love with the wrong person. Maybe even your boss," she continued, according to The New York Times. "Unlike me, though, your boss probably wasn’t the President of the United States of America.”

Since becoming a household name in 1998 for having an affair with former president Bill Clinton, Lewinsky has kept a relatively low profile for the past decade. Yesterday, Lewinsky delivered a talk at TED2015 in Vancouver titled "The Price Of Shame."

Now 41, Lewinsky described the impact the Internet had on her story. “This scandal was brought to you by the digital revolution,” she said. “It was the first time traditional news was usurped by the Internet, a click that reverberated around the whole world... Overnight, I went from being a completely private figure to a publicly humiliated one worldwide."

“I was Patient Zero of losing a personal reputation on a global scale almost instantaneously," she continued. “I was branded as a tramp, tart, slut, whore, bimbo and, of course, ‘that woman.’ I was known by many, but actually known by few. I get it. It was easy to forget ‘that woman’ was dimensional and had a soul.”

As the subject of one of the first major "scandals" to play out over the Internet, Lewinsky discussed the powerful effects of online harassment. “When this happened to me, 17 years ago, there was no name for it," she told the crowd. "Now we call it cyber-bullying.”

Lewinsky cited Tyler Clementi, a New Jersey college student who committed suicide in 2010 after being cyber-bullied for being gay. “Tyler’s tragic, senseless death was a turning point for me,” Lewinsky said. “It served to re-contextualize my experiences. I began to look at the world of humiliation and bullying around me and see something different… Every day online, people -- especially young people who are not developmentally equipped to handle this -- are so abused and humiliated that they can’t imagine living to the next day.”

“Public humiliation as a blood sport has to stop,” she continued. “...Just imagine walking a mile in someone else’s headline.”

Towards the end of her talk, Lewinsky answered the question she keeps receiving: Why come into the spotlight now? “The top-note answer was and is: Because it’s time," she answered. "Time to stop tiptoeing around my past… Time to take back my narrative."

North West Is Kanye's Tiny Dancer In A Pink Tutu

It's no secret that Kim Kardashian avoids dressing her daughter, North West, in stereotypical pink. But as the reality star told Lucky magazine last year, it's a sartorial choice made by Nori herself.

"She doesn’t like pink or purple -- she likes greys, creams, oatmeal colors and black," Kardashian explained. "Every once in awhile she’ll add in some color, like with her little red Air Yeezys, but other than that she likes to keep it pretty simple."

But times have apparently changed. On Thursday, the 21-month-old was spotted looking extra adorable in a light pink leotard and matching tutu, which she donned for her tap class. On Friday, her proud mom shared a photo of daddy Kanye West holding his tiny dancer as they left the studio. "My cuties! #twinning #geminis," Kardashian captioned the snap.

And while they may be twinning, North seems to be an equal mix of both her parents. The 34-year-old reality star also posted this split of her daughter and herself at North's age, writing, "My princess and I at the same age! North is seriously the sweetest, funniest girl I know! ."

Julianne Hough Gets Sultry For Allure Magazine

Julianne Hough stuns in the April issue of Allure magazine and opens up about that highly-publicized split from Ryan Seacrest.

Although it's been two years since the couple called it quits, the 26-year-old actress and dancer, who is now dating Washington Capitals hockey player Brooks Laich, is shedding some new light on the breakup. First fact: Her beloved short haircut was a post-split decision.

She cut it for her role in "Safe Haven," but decided to chop more "when I cut ties with my relationship," she tells Allure. "It was about changing it up and beginning fresh -- in the movie but in real life, also.”

And second fun fact? Hough runs into her old beau from time to time. "It's hard not to," she says, "he's everywhere."

As for that time she rocked the Internet for wearing blackface to dress up as Crazy Eyes, Uzo Aduba's character on "Orange Is the New Black," for Halloween, Hough says she learned "a big lesson."

"Ignorance is sometimes not bliss; I really had no idea what I was doing, and it was all out of fun and respect for the character," Hough tells Allure. "I don't even know how to talk about it because it's such a sensitive topic. It makes me so sad to think that I was that dumb."

International McDonald's Restaurants Serve Macarons, And No They're Not Called 'McMacarons'

Macarons are a delightfully fancy dessert treat, typically sold at upscale patisseries in delicate packaging. While it's rare to find them outside of a pretty little shop located somewhere trendy, we recently rediscovered an unlikely place that makes its own: McDonald's.

Yep, if you've ever been to a McDonald's in France, Germany or Australia, you might've seen a yummy macaron peering up from a glass-covered McCafé display case. Unfortunately, no one thought to call them "McMacarons."

Here are the macaron flavors offered at McDonald's France:

macaron

According to Sabrina Spadaro, Corporate Communications Manager for McDonald's Australia, the company recently introduced the tasty treats in Australia in early 2013. McDonald's AU currently serves chocolate, cappuccino, coconut, chocolate mint, strawberry cream and salted caramel flavors.

Below are what macarons at McDonald's Australia look like:

Sure they're probably not comparable to macarons from Ladurée, but we would totally eat one.

People who have tried the macarons describe them as "heavy and sweet" compared to traditional macarons, while others say they're "damn cheap and affordable to satisfy mad cravings," which sounds totally acceptable to us.

Here's more McDonald's macaron porn, just because they look so beautiful:

Karlie Kloss Makes Her Music Video Debut For Chic's 'I'll Be There'

Taylor Swift and Karlie Kloss just graced the cover of Vogue magazine together, and now it looks like their friendship is rubbing off on each other even more: Kloss just made her music video debut.

The 22-year-old appears in the new Chic video featuring Nile Rodgers for "I'll Be There," which is the band's first single in years. Kloss is seen writhing around on the ground in black underwear and executing some serious Jane Fonda-style ab moves. Essentially, she does all the things normal people would do when they listen to music by themselves... if they were supermodels.

Kloss makes a few outfit changes throughout the video, switching from a red sweatshirt and black lingerie to a glitter dress. She eventually slips into an intricately cutout white number. So "chic."

We do have one request for the next music video Kloss stars in: make it Taylor Swift's!

Retired Yankees great Derek Jeter and girlfriend Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue cover model Hannah Davis caught a match Thursday in Osaka, Japan.

Jeter was in Japan to help out former teammate Hideki Matsui at a charity baseball game to benefit survivors of the 2011 earthquake and tsunami, the New York Post reported. He got to meet some of the wrestlers at the sumo tournament.

The ex-shortstop, pictured below with grand champion Hakuho, didn't carry a lot of weight with competitors. According to the Japan Times, Chiyomaru shook Jeter's hand without a glimmer of recognition. "I didn’t realize who it was,” Chiyomaru said.

Another sumo, Tochiozan, said, "He was a catcher or something like that, wasn’t he?"

Husband And Wife Discover They Crossed Paths As Kids, 16 Years Before Meeting

New Jersey couple Jourdan and Ryan Spencer met when they were set up on a blind date in 2004 -- but they first crossed paths more than a decade before.

Several years ago, while watching home videos together, the couple came across some footage from 1988 (which you can watch above) when a 10-year-old Jourdan and her family were visiting Sesame Place amusement park in Langhorne, Pennsylvania. Jourdan was in line for the water slide and her family was waiting at the bottom for her to come down. That's when Ryan, a then-13-year-old stranger, walked into the frame.

Jourdan's mom, her sisters and Ryan in the glasses.

"Ryan walked past [in the video] and he said, 'That looks like me,'" Jourdan told The Huffington Post. "We stopped it and rewound it and watched it again, it happened so quickly. We just kept watching it and rewinding it and watching it. We got out pictures of him at that age. There was no doubt about it -- his ears, his nose, his horrible glasses, his choppy bangs -- just no doubt about it."

Both Ryan and Jourdan grew up in New Jersey and both of their families remembered visiting Sesame Place around that time. Still, when they told their friends about the discovery, no one really believed them. (Jourdan said she didn't have a smartphone at the time to take a photo of the screen.)

They couldn't even convince the naysayers otherwise because the video, which was kept at Jourdan's parents' home, went missing. The Spencers assumed it had been lost or destroyed when the parents' house flooded during Hurricane Sandy.

2015-03-20-1426881839-7539051-sJOURDANRYANSPENCERlarge640.jpg

It wasn't until a family function two weeks ago, with all of Jourdan's siblings in attendance, that the video resurfaced.

"We were watching home movies and we saw Sesame Place and went, 'Oh, maybe this is it.' And we said, 'No no no, we lost that one,'" Jourdan said. "And then Ryan walked past. All of my siblings were here on that day. It was insane. Screaming, crying, everyone was so excited."

Jourdan told HuffPost that she believes there are no coincidences and that things like this really do happen for a reason.

"It’s beyond what I can fathom in my mind," she said. "It could be a movie."

The couple now lives in Scotch Plains, New Jersey with their three children -- Sophia, Max and Mabel. Their oldest Sophia, who is 6 years old, is fascinated by her parents' story.

"She keeps saying, 'How did Daddy know you were there?' 'Why were you there on the same day?' 'Was Daddy looking for you?' Because there's a part where it looks like he lost someone and is trying to find the people he was with. She wants to go back. She wants to know when we can go to Sesame Place."

Viral 'Terre Des Femmes' Photo Series Shares An Important Message, But Not An Original One

$

0
A powerful feminist poster series about judging women by their clothing has gone viral -- but it looks strikingly similar to a project from 2013.

The series, produced by student Theresa Wlokka of Miami Ad School in Germany for nonprofit Terre des Femmes, was picked up by news outlets from Bustle to Design Taxi this week.

The set of three posters shows the words used to judge women as they relate to the length of her skirt, the depth of her neckline and the height of her heels. The concept behind the series is that women are judged no matter what they're wearing, regardless of whether an outfit is considered "prudish" or "revealing." The images highlight the type of everyday misogyny that holds gender equality back.

The series makes an important point about the way people make damaging assumptions about women based only on their physical appearances -- specifically, their clothing choices. However, commenters and Twitter users have pointed out that these posters bear a clear resemblance to college student Pomona Lake's 2013 piece, "Judgments." (See a side-by-side of the two projects below.)

rosea lake terre des femmes
Left, Pomona Lake's 2013 project, "Judgments." Right, Theresa Wlokka's poster for Femme des Terres.

Lake, who formerly went by the name Rosea, told The Huffington Post that she reached out to Miami Ad School after friends shared the new series with her, informing them that the idea had been plagiarized. Lake says the school never responded, but Wlokka reached out to her personally.

According to Lake, Wlokka told her that she had never seen Lake's work before, claimed that this poster series was her original idea and apologized for the inconvenience.

"Sometimes you can absorb ideas without realizing where it's from, but in this instance, word for word the projects are the same," Lake told HuffPost. "If they had emailed me and reached out for permission and credited me with the idea, I would have said yes."

A Twitter account appearing to belong to Frida Regeheim, who is credited as the ads' copywriter, was deleted Friday. A tweet sent earlier in the day from the account claimed that the posters' creators had been in touch with Lake and received permission to use her idea -- something that Lake claims is untrue.

Regeheim and Terre des Femmes have not responded to HuffPost's request for comment.

UPDATE: 11:10 p.m. -- Wlokka gave her account of the situation in a statement to HuffPost later on Friday:

It started with that we got an assignment in one of our classes to do a print campaign for a charity organization last year. We instantly decided we wanted to do something for female rights. As women we've been harassed several times, in different ways, based on the way we look. From men, but also from women. We're too harsh on each other and call each other names. And I don't know how many times I've read about rape victims that were wearing a mini skirt. Who cares what she was wearing? She should be able to go naked and it shouldn't matter.

We also talked about how we think when we dress and how a lot of women often dress to please someone else rather than themselves.
There's such a big black cloud over such a simple, fun thing as clothing. It should be a way of expressing yourself and something to have fun with. Not a foundation to judgement.

After we made the ads and it spread over the Internet, to an extent we're overwhelmed by, we heard about Rosea's picture and other ideas that also are in the same direction. Of course we wanted to be unique, but we didn't see it as something negative that others wanted the same change as us. And that's something that Rosea agreed on when we emailed with her. We're all fighting the same fight. When it comes to advertising there usually is something out there that's similar to your idea. In this case we see it as something positive since it's for a good cause. We're really happy that the campaign has started a discussion and we hope that it makes people think. About how we treat each other, not about the way we dress.

We were in contact with Rosea yesterday and also tried to reach her today as we can understand her point of view. So far we did not get an answer.

Bra Fitting 101 For Women With Small Busts

$
0
0
Every woman knows that having great bras is important; it's a necessity, not a want, and one that can be a bit costly these days. When choosing a great bra quality should be at the top of the list, but we all love to look and feel sexy. Who knows when we may need to "suddenly" toss our shirts off, afterall!

Buying the right bra can be a bit tricky though -- half the time it's because instead of focusing on the fit, we tend to focus on designs, styles, and brands, leaving fit to be a last minute consideration. With the price tags on some of the most popular brands out there, realizing that we missed the mark on fit can be an irritating and costly mistake.

For those with a smaller bust, finding the right fit can be even more challenging than finding a reliable brand that offers high quality, affordable bras.

If you are one of the unfortunate cases who has to deal with the inability to even find a bra that has your size at all, consider going into the store, trying a bra on that is as close to your size as possible, and getting it altered later on. You can work with a seamstress who can alter the bra for you, or you can fill it up the old fashion way.

How Do I Know If the Fit of My Bra Has Been Compromised?

The Band
Can you stick two fingers underneath the band comfortably? Make sure that it fits nicely on the middle hook, in case of weight gain or loss.

Your Shoulder Straps Should Stay Put
Do your shoulder straps keep falling off your shoulder? Or are they digging into your skin? If after adjusting you find no relief, then you have the wrong bra on.

The Tug
Do you find yourself tugging the cups up? Maybe your nipples keep popping out or your breasts are puffing out awkwardly, the cups shouldn't be baggy either, rather they should hug your breasts comfortably.

Even Small Chested Women Need Great Support
I don't know a woman who wouldn't love to be able to take her bra off and strut around in a tank without having to worry about the big "droop" affect, as I like to put it. Yes, even small chested women can accelerate sagging without proper support.

Think of wearing a bra as a preventative measure for later on down the line, like wearing sunscreen on your face before walking out into the scorching sun.

Your Bra Size Can Change
Our bodies are constantly changing, whether it's from natural functions like our menstrual cycles or simply age, stress, or a vacation to your ultimate foodie destination. Never assume that you will always be the same size, and try to get a fitting at least once a year to make sure that you are wearing the right bra for you.Go Overboard

Quality Matters, so Don't Go Cheap but There's No Need to Go Overboard
Spending big bucks on a bra may not be in everybody's budget, but this is one of those scenarios where quality matters over quantity. If you are just starting out, create a budget that will allow you to buy a few great bras over a 6 to 12 month period. Have more than two or three bras sitting around, this will help to extend the life of your bras and give you a little more flexibility with style and wear.

Know the Signs of a Great Bra

  • The fabric piece between the fabric and your breast, called the bridge, should lie completely flat.

  • Your breasts sit comfortably in the cups without gaps or unsightly bulges.

  • The underwire is flat against your ribcage.

  • The band is straight across your back, not squeezing.

Affordable Brands That Specialize in Small Busted Women
There are great brands out there that specialize in bra's for the small busted woman. They not only offer amazing bras at a reasonable price, but offer a lot of tips to simplify bra shopping for women.

Lula lu $19-$60

Lula lu bra sizes range from size 32AAA to 38AAA and they offer beautiful and comfortable lingerie for petite women.

They have a great blog that offers a wide range of advice, that including the best small bust wedding dresses, and Straps and Bands, how to find the perfect fit.

Lula lu Tips For Determining Bra Size

STEP 1: Determining Band Size

Wear a lightly lined or unpadded bra.

Take the measuring tape and place your fingers on the 8″ mark of the tape with your right hand (the 8″ mark is just a placeholder for your hand and is not part of the calculation).

Bring the tape behind your back with your right hand.

Place your left hand behind your back.

With your right hand, pass the tape to your left hand, following the bottom edge of the back of your bra band.

With your left hand, pull the measuring tape to the front of your body, towards the top of your breastbone.

With your right hand, pull the tape to the front of your body as well, meeting your left hand at a point at the top of your breastbone.

Do not pull the tape too tight or too loose at your breastbone.

If the number is even, then that is your band size (i.e. 34").

If your measurement is an odd number then add 1". (i.e. if you measured 31," then round up to 32″).

STEP 2: Determining Cup Size

To ensure accuracy, we recommend you measure yourself while wearing an unpadded bra. Using a measuring tape, measure around your body across the fullest part of your bust. Again, this should not be too tight or too loose. To calculate your cup size, subtract your band size from Step 1 from your cup measurement.

The Little Bra Company $54-$80

A little pricier than Lula lu, The Little Bra Company has just as much to offer, offering a wide range of styles. TLBC stores are easily available, from California and Alaska, to Trinidad and Tobago, and they offer great tips and support on their blog. They range in size from 28A to 34C.

Mimi Holliday $44-62

Mimi Holliday definitely takes the cake in term of style in my opinion, offering amazing combinations and options. This UK brand does offer international delivery to the U.S. for $13, with shipping taking 5 to 7 business days, but this review from The Lingerie Lesbian will keep you entertained while you wait.

There are some great brands that offer amazing bras, even for small busted women, it just takes a little research. It's also important to make sure that the fit of the bra is correct, no matter the size of your bust.

Do you have a favorite brand that you find yourself going to over and over again?

This Incredible Acrobatic Couple Is Getting Married 38 Times In 83 Days On 6 Continents

Many starry-eyed marriage proposals promise the world.

Cheetah Platt, 30, and Rhian Woodyard, 32, are actually following through on that promise.

Instead of spending their money on an elaborate wedding ceremony, the Los Angeles couple decided they'd rather start their lives together by traveling the world, holding 38 wedding ceremonies along the way. For less than $3,000 apiece, the two -- both acrobats -- planned out an impressive itinerary spanning 83 days and 11 countries.

ajanta caves cheetah platt
The Ajanta Caves - Thana, India

"We live in California, which is a very expensive state," Platt told The Huffington Post, explaining how they transitioned from the idea of a traditional ceremony to what they've come to call a "worldwide wedding." "And weddings? Oh they're a lot of money. We didn't want to spend a lot of money for a single day."

The two anguished over the particulars of a wedding, then realized after "a lot, a lot of planning and preparation" that they could both get ordained online and marry themselves for free all over the world instead. "Not only is this possible," said Platt, "but oddly enough -- it's more affordable."

"I really want people to know that this wedding, three months around the world with unbelievable adventures... is cheaper than throwing a good -- not even a 'great,' not even an 'epic' -- just a good wedding in California for one day."

Given the scope of this adventure, surely the two traveled often prior to this?

"No," says Platt. "Absolutely not."

While Platt's job has taken him to international spots, and he considers himself well-traveled, Woodyard says she's "the complete opposite."

"I have been to three states," she says, laughing. "I have never traveled before at all, so something else that inspired this wedding was the fact that Cheetah could give me this amazing experience at the same time, and we could learn about each other."

The two struggled to pin down the highlights of their trip so far, given that everywhere they've been has been amazing and full of so many "firsts" for Woodyard. That list includes everything from seeing the Great Pyramids to Woodyards first time riding a subway.

"I've taken quite a few photos," she added.

giza egypt wedding

For Platt, two standouts have been getting married in front of the pyramids in Giza, and seeing a cheetah (his namesake) on the savannah in Africa. Woodyard's most memorable part so far has been exploring the Ellora and Ajanta Caves in India. At the time of their interview with HuffPost, they'd only just arrived in Thailand, with plenty more to see.

They emphasized that flexibility in where they wanted to go, and at what times, has saved them lots of money on their around-the-world journey, which started in Bogota, Colombia, in early February.

"We really chose everything based on price, because everything was going to be amazing," said Woodyard. "It didn't matter so much where we went -- it mattered that we went."

When they finally return home, they'll have one last (and legally binding) ceremony, with their family and friends. "That's huge," says Platt, "that's so important."

For their honeymoon (remember: this trip is their wedding), the couple says they don't have plans yet, but it could be anything from a weekend trip to northern California to another three-month international adventure.

As you'd expect, the photos are amazing. And did we mention they're both acrobats?

Levi’s has announced it's saved 1 billion liters of water in its manufacturing process. That's enough to fill 400 Olympic-size pools. That's enough to make a huge water-footprint dent. That's enough to provide H20 for days for all of its high-waisted-wearing hipster clientele in New York.

Paul Dillinger, Levi’s vice president of Global Product Innovation, said at a panel Tuesday at South by Southwest that the company has tracked results since 2011 when it began using less water in its finishing process. The reduction efforts include eliminating water during stone washes and combining multiple wet cycles.

During the panel, which was moderated by HuffPost Impact, Dillinger also called on consumers to wash their jeans less frequently.

Levi's new study, The Life Cycle of a Jean, found that 3,800 liters of water are used during the lifetime of a pair of jeans -- from the creation of your favorite 501s to that weathered holes-in-the-knees moment when you lay them to rest.

The study found that consumer washing accounts for 23 percent of water usage on average.

With the release of its water-saving results, the company is imploring others to join their efforts. Charles V. Bergh, the self proclaimed Levi’s “CEO with dirty jeans” wrote for Fortune:

“Even with the best intentions, companies today can only help solve some of the environmental and social issues that impact our world. In order to really make a difference, we must also encourage our global supply chain partners and consumers to prioritize these issues.

Multiplying such efforts would be significant -- and those opportunities aren’t pipe dreams. It would, however, require CEOs of major companies in the U.S. and across the world to use their voice and actions to address the debate about water consumption, climate change and the overall state of our planet.”

Dillinger also reminded consumers that the concept of sustainability applies to an entire life cycle of a jean.

"Most likely you're tired of that garment before that garment is tired of you," he said on the panel. "Donate to Goodwill to give it a new life."

Levi's is asking individual consumers to do their part and find out how much water they use and could save by washing their jeans less frequently. Check it out here.

This Little Girl With Down Syndrome And Her Baby Sister Will Totally Steal Your Heart

I'd like to introduce you to Ariana, aka "Squishy," the sweet, sassy and seriously adorable 2-year-old that has stolen my heart.

From the moment I discovered her via her mother's Instagram page, it was love at first sight. But it isn't just her chubby cheeks, infectious giggle and megawatt smile that have me captivated -- it's also the fact that Squishy has Down syndrome.

I grew up with a brother who has special needs, so watching Squishy's life unfold in a series of beautiful Instagram photos and videos really hits home for me. Although my brother doesn't specifically have DS, there is something uniquely amazing about being in a family with someone that has developmental disabilities. My sister and I definitely attribute most of our kindness and awesomeness to being raised with our brother. Which is also why I love that Squishy's best friend and sidekick is her 10-month-old sister, Keira, aka "Kiki."

The dynamic duo has the best adventures together, which are all captured by their mother, Andrea Hinton. The 30-year-old stay-at-home mom is on a mission to show that her two seemingly different daughters are actually very similar in many ways.

So, in celebration of World Down Syndrome Day on Saturday, we chatted with Hinton about Squishy, Kiki, parenting two exceptional little girls and what people should know (and love) about children with DS. Check it out below ...

What's the story behind Ariana's nickname, "Squishy"?
We received a prenatal diagnosis with Squishy and one day I was balling my eyes out when “Finding Nemo” came on. There’s a part of the movie when Dory comes across this tiny, innocent jellyfish and says, "I shall call him Squishy and he shall be mine." Right at that moment Ariana kicked me, and I felt like she was telling me, "It's OK, Mommy. It's all going to be OK -- I shall be yours." I started to enjoy my pregnancy again and I nicknamed her Squishy. And when she was born she was perfectly squishy! So it stuck.

Squishy has such a big personality! Give us three words that best describe her.

Intuitive: Squishy is always in touch with how others are feeling and sensitive to their emotions. Independent: She wants to do everything by herself, which is a good and bad thing -- good because she wants to learn everything, but bad when we are in a hurry. Lovable: There are no hugs in the world that can compare to a Squishy hug!

When did you learn that Ariana had DS? How did you and your husband feel about and deal with the news?

We learned that Ariana had DS when I was 26 weeks pregnant. I went in for an ultrasound where they thought they noticed something on her stomach so they sent me to a specialist. At that time the specialist said that there was nothing wrong with her stomach, but that they did notice something with her heart. We then went to see a pediatric cardiologist at Rady Children's Hospital in San Diego, California, who gave us her diagnosis, which was DS and atrioventricular septal defect (AVSD), a congenital heart defect. I was informed at that time that Ariana would have to undergo open-heart surgery shortly after birth.

It was a very out-of-body, devastating experience. People always say, "As long as the baby is healthy" -- well, what if your baby isn't healthy? Does that make you love her any less? Absolutely not. For us, it surely made us scared, but we love her even more. Jason was in basic training for the Army at the time so I immediately sent a Red Cross message to him to give him the news. Jason didn't even flinch while we were on the phone. His exact words were, "OK. But we are going to love her just the same -- she's our daughter and she was made from our love." He tells me now that the hardest part for him was not the diagnosis, but that he and I were not together to support each other -- to learn about everything together and love on each other. We didn't get to see each other until Ariana was almost 1 week old. Although his words were so comforting and reassuring, I was a mess. The fact that my unborn child would have to have open-heart surgery made my heart and body ache.

I had no idea what my daughter having Down syndrome meant. What it meant for her future -- for our future. I'm embarrassed to admit that at the time I had never even met anyone with DS. Would my daughter fall in love? Would she be able to have those mother-daughter talks with me like I do with my mother? Will she be happy? I had never felt so alone so I drove myself into research, blogs, YouTube, and I found so many touching and inspirational stories that made me more and more confident that Ariana would be just fine. The hardest thing for me was not Ariana, it was me. Am I a strong enough person? Will I be a good enough mom? And then I finally said stop. We planned and prayed for Ariana, and she is what I wanted, exactly as she is. I just didn't know that at the time.

How is raising a child with DS different from raising a child without?

We are still learning how different it is now that we have two kiddos. With Ariana being our first child, we enjoyed and really relished every milestone. When she sat independently, took her first steps, said her first word, signed her first sign, pointed with intent, all huge accomplishments that we worked with her every day, all day, meticulously. Now that we have Kiki, we are still doing a lot of the same things, but she just starts doing things on her own without any help from us; she's been walking since 8 months old. We realize now what people mean by "cherish babyhood," because time goes by so fast. As far as parenting, we treat both our daughters the same, we are going to instill the same morals, values and rules. I don’t want Squishy or myself to use Down syndrome as a crutch -- Down syndrome is just one aspect of my daughter, it does not define her.

Since your husband is in the military, does that mean he's gone a lot of the time? If so, how do you handle taking care of the girls without him around?

Yes, Jason is currently serving in the U.S. Army. He is gone for field expeditions at least twice a year and whenever he is needed in between. So, yes, unfortunately he is gone a lot. My father is terminally ill, so when Jason is gone for a long period of time we do our best to visit my family and I am able to get a little help. Jason also works very long hours so most days it's just me and our girls. I have learned to let the little stuff go, to be present in their world, because time does go by too fast.

Ariana and Kiki have the sweetest relationship! I hope they always stay that close. Have you thought about how you will explain Ariana's DS to Kiki?

We are just going to explain to her that her sister rocks a little something extra called Down syndrome, which is a condition, not an illness. A condition that may make learning and speaking come at a slower pace, but that doesn't mean that Ariana can't do it. Your sister will have many likes and talents like you. Just remember that when someone finds it difficult to speak or learn new things that doesn't make their feelings any less or any different from yours. So both of you, be kind to one another, love one another, protect each other, stand up for one another; you guys are sisters by blood but friends by choice, and I pray it always stays that way.

Were you scared to have another child after having Ariana?

Yes and no. We knew that the risk of having another child with DS was relatively small, but nevertheless still a chance. And it isn't Down syndrome, it's the health risks like Ariana's heart condition that can go with the diagnosis. When I got pregnant again, I knew immediately that Kiki was in perfect health -- motherly instinct. I did get the Harmony non-invasive blood test just to put our minds at ease. Not because we were worried about having another child with DS, rather because we wanted to be just as prepared for this child as we were with Squishy. We are planning on two more kids. We want Squishy to have a big family!

You are always so positive. Do you have any daily mantras/sayings/affirmations that help you remain at ease when times get tough?

I don't have any affirmations, but how can you not be positive with Squishy in your life? I have no reason to feel anything but pure love and positivity with my family. I have learned that I am stronger than I ever could have imagined. I can't be weak, I have to advocate for my daughter, make sure that I am her voice so she gets everything that she deserves. But I do have this quote that I always tell Squishy: "You must always remember you are braver than you believe, stronger than you seem and smarter than you think."

You started an awesome Facebook page for Squishy. What do you think people should know about children with DS?

I really want people to know that our kiddos are so much more alike than different. My Ariana is very much a 2-year-old. She gets into everything, is curious about life, she tests her boundaries and is hungry for knowledge. People should know that if we give our kids a little bit of patience and time, they will surprise you and you'll see that they are capable of anything, just in their own time.

What's the best thing about being Ariana and Kiki's mom? And what's the hardest thing?

The best thing about being their mom is having the pleasure of watching them grow and become their own. Ariana has come so far and has done everything that the doctors and specialists told me she wouldn't. They told me that she would not breastfeed because of her heart condition and low muscle tone. Well, she nursed until her sissy was almost born! They told me she would take an average of two years plus to walk; she was walking at 16 months old. They said she may be non-verbal, ha! She babbles her life story every chance she gets. And Keira has been the perfect addition to our family. Wherever Squishy goes, Kiki isn't far behind. Kiki's personality is just starting to bloom and she is the silliest, fastest -- she's going to be our athlete -- most curious baby.

The hardest thing is the mother guilt that I think all mothers have at one point or another. Did I do enough today? Did I set a good example? Did I give each one individual attention? Am I nurturing them the right way? Am I watching what I say about myself around them? It's extremely important for me to lead by example; I treat others how I want them to treat myself and my daughters, with kindness and tolerance.

What hopes and dreams do you and your husband have for Squishy?

First and most importantly, we want Ariana to be happy. That is our biggest hope. We want her to find her passion and be able to follow her dreams. We are introducing her to everything and anything so she can find out what she likes. Ariana is going to start tumbling and swim lessons soon. We are also getting her into piano, dance and sports as soon as she is old enough. We just want her to have every opportunity to succeed and we want her to be confident in herself.

These Reese Witherspoon Photos Make Us Nostalgic For The '90s

Call us biased, but we think the '90s gave birth to some of the coolest trends around. Fast forward to today, and they're still kicking. Everyone from high schoolers to fashion editors are now rocking crop tops, choker necklaces and septum rings.

While some things are better left in the past -- here's looking at you, slap bracelets and butterfly clips-- seeing these throwback photos of Reese Witherspoon make us miss the cool and carefree style of that decade.

The actress looks like your typical teenage mall rat in a sleeveless black turtleneck, polka dot mini skirt, knee-high black boots and burgundy lipstick at the launch party for her 1996 film "Freeway."

Though Witherspoon probably won't want to trade her red carpet dresses for this super casual look, the below images should reassure the star that she's aging gracefully.
