Donald Trump Comes In 13th Place In Necktie Auction

GREENLAND, N.H. -- It was perhaps the one competition involving presidential contenders in New Hampshire that Donald Trump had a legitimate chance to win.

In an effort to raise money and bring some attention to the largely rural county in northwest New Hampshire, the Grafton County Republican Committee’s tie auction featured neckwear donated by potential 2016 GOP presidential candidates.

Real estate mogul and reality TV star Donald Trump was among the 18 possible Republican White House hopefuls who contributed a tie to the auction.

But when the online auction ended at midnight on Saturday, the famously well-dressed Trump -- the one prospective candidate in the field who sells his own line of neckwear -- finished in a disappointing 13th place.

Trump’s tie sold for $142.50, according to NH Journal -- not bad, for a 13-place finish.

Former Gov. Jeb Bush (R-Fla.), whose tie sold for $355, was the winner of the contest.

Among the dozen prospective presidential contenders whose neckwear sold for more than Trump’s were former U.N. Ambassador John Bolton, former Gov. Bob Ehrlich (R-Md.) and Gov. Scott Walker (R-Wis.), who, during a recent campaign swing through New Hampshire, wore a sweater that he purchased for $1 at Kohl’s.

As he has previously insisted in three other presidential election cycles, Trump says that he is seriously considering a 2016 White House bid.

Those who missed out on the opportunity to purchase one of Trump’s ties can take heart: His “Donald J. Trump Jaguar Stripe B Tie” is on sale through Macy's for $26.99.

Hollywood's youngest entertainers paraded around at the 2015 Kids' Choice Awards on Saturday. While most attendees are aware they have a pretty high chance of getting slimed, everyone wore their best spring attire.

The biggest trends on the orange carpet were bright colors and prints, as stars showed up in blue and coral dresses and rompers and floral button-downs. Host Nick Jonas sported a cool denim jacket and chino pants, rising singer Megan Nicole wore a neon green crop top and skirt and fan-favorite Fifth Harmony coordinated in neutrals.

See what everyone wore on the Kids' Choice Awards 2015 orange carpet below and tell us your favorite look of the night.

We're sick of our winter boots. They're covered in salt stains, the heels are worn down and they just make us feel sad. But you know what doesn't make us feel sad? Summer sandals.

7 Tips To Finding The Most Flattering Jeans For Your Body Shape

There's nothing more frustrating than trying on a pair of jeans, committing to them by dropping cash, and then getting home and feeling disappointed by your decision. It sometimes seems as though the denim actually morphs between the time you leave the store and the time you get home -- either that, or your body changed dramatically.

Michelle Obama Declares 'Black Girls Rock!'

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) -- Michelle Obama celebrated the beauty, power and tenacity of black women while spreading her own message of education for girls at Black Girls Rock!, an annual event honoring trailblazing women of color from all walks of life.

"No matter who you are, no matter where you come from, you are beautiful," Obama told the crowd, which included many young black girls.

"I am so proud of you. My husband, your president, is so proud of you," she added. "We have so much hope and dreams for you."

Obama was not among the honorees at Saturday night's festivities, held at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center. That distinction went to actress Jada Pinkett Smith, singer Erykah Badu, actress Cicely Tyson, "Selma" director Ava DuVernay, educator Nadia Lopez and Dr. Helene D. Gayle, president and CEO of CARE USA, a humanitarian organization.

However, Obama was the most celebrated participant. Wearing a form-fitting white dress, she jammed to performances from the likes of Badu, Fantasia, Sheila E!, Estelle and others and applauded the honorees.

But Obama got among the night's loudest ovations as she came on stage and declared "Black girls rock!" - the slogan and name of the organization founded by Beverly Bond, which is designed to uplift young black girls, a group that often has difficulty finding positive and reaffirming images of themselves in the world.

Obama acknowledged as much in her speech to celebrate three young honorees.

"I know there are voices that you are not good enough," she said, acknowledging that she often lacked self-confidence growing up despite encouraging parents.

"Each of those doubts was like a test," she said, "that I either shrink away from or rise to meet. And I decided to rise."

Obama, who recently completed a trip to Japan and Cambodia as part of her worldwide push for better educational opportunities for girls, lauded the young honorees for excelling in their studies.

"There is nothing more important than being serious about your education," the Ivy League-educated Obama said. "That's why I am able to stand here tonight. ... I want every one of our black girls do to the same, and our black boys."

Obama's speech was just one of many highlights of the nearly four-hour event, which will be shown Saturday, April 5, on BET.

Will Smith gave an emotional tribute to his wife, Jada Pinkett, who received the Star Power award. Smith alluded to persistent rumors that the couple's marriage was in trouble.

He said when one rumor got out of control, he had a chance of reflection.

"In that brief moment my heart jumped for a second and I started to imagine what my life would have been like without that woman," he said as the couple's daughter, Willow, beamed from the audience.

When Pinkett Smith accepted the honor, she alluded to recent slights of black girls and women - including a college baseball player's slur against Little League pitcher Mo'ne Davis - as reasons why Black Girls Rock! is necessary.

She also implored black women to celebrate and be aware of their own strength.

"I need you to understand that we are the women who marched from cotton fields into fields of medicine ... politics ... entertainment," she said. "We have found a way to march into a White House."

Tyson also spoke to the resiliency of black women as she accepted her legacy award from hosts actresses Tracee Ellis Ross and Regina King.

"The moment anyone tries to demean or degrade you in any way, you have to know how great you are," Tyson said. "Nobody would bother to beat you down if you were not a threat."

DuVernay, whose civil rights drama "Selma" received an Academy Award nomination, making her the first black woman to notch such an achievement, name-checked a host of other black filmmakers in her speech as she accepted her Shot Caller award, and implored women to "figure out what you need to do to be the heroine of your own story."

The show peppered songs from entertainers like Jill Scott, Estelle and others with inspiring stories from the award winners. One of the members of the group Sister Sledge sang the song "We Are Family," with the refrain "I've got all my sisters with me," as the audience grooved along.

And sisterhood was the spirit of the evening, evident when Obama came on stage to close the show with all the honorees. When an embarrassed King flubbed a line, Obama gave her a hug and then jokingly rubbed her back.

The actress and director then shouted with glee, "I've got Mrs. Obama pumping me up!"

Newark, New Jersey, was the place to be on Saturday, as the most beautiful and brilliant women of color gathered for the 2015 Black Girls Rock event.

Founded by philanthropist and celebrity DJ Beverly Bond, the annual awards ceremony celebrates trailblazers in the fields of entertainment, politics, medicine and education. Cicely Tyson, Jada Pinkett Smith, Ava DuVernay, Erykah Badu, Nadia Lopez and Dr. Helene D. Gayle were this year's honorees.

First lady Michelle Obama even made an appearance to empower young girls and stress the importance of education. She said, "I am so proud of you. My husband, your president, is so proud of you. We have so much hope and dreams for you."

The positive image of phenomenal women was furthered by the jaw-dropping style of those present. Black and white was the biggest trend of the night with singers Janelle Monae, Jill Scott, Estelle and Ciara sporting the classic colors. But the Pinkett-Smith family ruled the red carpet sporting fashion-forward ensembles that accentuated their natural beauty.

Clothing Labels List Sweatshop Atrocities So Buyers Will Shop More Consciously

$

The writing on clothing labels is generally kept pretty pithy, because unless customers are shopping in Milan, they’re likely not all that interested in the details of their garments’ origins.

But, in reality, just as important as fit and comfort is where clothes are made and how the people who produced them were treated in the process. That’s why advocacy group Canadian Fair Trade Network recently unveiled a powerful campaign that outlines on actual clothing labels the types of horrors sweatshop workers in Cambodia, Sierra Leone and Bangladesh face.

The stories represent what transpires at three levels of production -- harvesting, textile production and garment manufacturing.

A bright yellow sweater, for example, describes the devastating daily schedule of a child laborer in Cambodia.

labor

The label reads: 100% cotton. Made in Cambodia by Behnly, 9 years old. He gets up at 5:00 am every morning to make his way to the garment factory where he works. It will be dark when he arrives and dark when he leaves. He dresses lightly because the temperature in the room he works reaches 30 degrees. The dust in the room fills his nose and mouth. He will make less than a dollar, for a day spent slowly suffocating. A mask would cost the company ten cents.

The label doesn’t tell the whole story.

In 2012, Cambodia shipped more than $4 billion worth of products to the United States and Europe, making the garment industry its most lucrative export. Yet the industry’s workers typically toil six days a week and make just $100 a month, barely enough to cover their basic expenses, according to advocacy group Clean Clothes.

Some major European companies, like H&M, have heeded to mounting pressure and recently pledged to improve meager wages for factory workers.

H&M committed to developing pay structures that would enable a fair living wage in 750 factories it works with, including those in Cambodia and Bangladesh, by 2018.

Often, however, it isn’t just the meager wages that concern workers most. It’s the fact that they face unsafe working conditions that could cost them their lives, as the label on a sleek suit jacket demonstrates.

cambodia

The label reads: 100% cotton. Made in Bangladesh by Joya who left school at the age of 12 to help support her two brothers and newly widowed mother. Her father was killed when a fire ripped through the cotton factory where he works. She now works in the building across the street from the burned down factory. A constant reminder of the risk she takes every day.

The label doesn’t tell the whole story.

The hazardous conditions workers in Bangladesh are subjected to made international headlines in 2012 when 112 laborers died in the country’s worst-ever factory fire. Walmart, Disney and Sears were among the U.S. retailers who imported clothing from the devastated factory.

Perhaps what was most distressing though, was that Walmart and Gap rejected a proposed plan a year earlier that would’ve required them to pay their suppliers more in order to improve safety conditions, Bloomberg reported.

In 2013, a some major U.S. and European retailers, including H&M, signed an international five-year accord that demanded independent safety inspections of factories in Bangladesh and that participating companies pay up to $500,000 a year for safety improvements. Walmart declined to get involved and said it was forming its own safety plan.

To help customers support companies that partake in fair trade practices, the Canadian Fair Trade Network offers customers an extensive shopping guide. It lists Canadian companies that partake in fair-trade practices and also enables shoppers to search by product to find manufacturers they can trust. To urge companies to improve wages for factory workers in Cambodia, Clean Clothes launched a petition to urge H&M to do even more to protect workers there.

When Rihanna posted a photo of Lil' Kim on her Instagram account Thursday, we had no idea that she'd recreate the rapper's style at the 2015 iHeartRadio Music Awards.

Riri looked like she stepped straight out of the 1997 music video for "Crush on You" while performing her new single "Bitch Better Have My Money." Dressed in an emerald green Versace fur coat, thigh-high boots, nameplate necklace and oversized sunglasses, she oozed sex appeal and swagger.

The Barbadian singer even styled her jet black hair with blunt bangs that looked like the colorful wigs Lil' Kim wore in the '90s. #Nailedit

Self-Portrait Is The Chicest Way To Channel Your Inner Reese Witherspoon

Who's the next great fashion designer? We're on the lookout for the lesser-known or up-and-coming stars who are creating collections and careers worthy of some praise and closet space. Although they aren't household names yet, we're so impressed with their skills that we bet they will be soon. Check out "The Fresh Faces of Fashion" for the scoop on the designers we believe are the next big thing.

Self-Portrait by Han Chong

We've been fans of fashion designer Han Chong's swoon-worthy creations since his days as creative director at Three Floor. So it was no surprise that when he launched his own brand, Self-Portrait, last year we'd be coveting the entire collection. The Malaysia-born-and raised designer is own for his ultra feminine, eye-catching cocktail dresses that boast lace, leather and sheer detailing -- making them both sexy and sophisticated.

selfportrait dress

Chong once told Elle.com that the mission of his line was to design clothes that are "sophisticated enough so celebrities will wear it, but accessible for normal people." Mission accomplished. The line has been worn by Reese Witherspoon, Miranda Kerr and Christy Tiegen, and with dresses selling for no more than $450, snagging one of Chong's signature peek-a-boo frocks isn't out of the realm of possibility.

We caught up with Chong and got the scoop on the type of woman he designs for, what his alternate dream profession would be and the one Self-Portrait dress we should all own. Check it out below.

HuffPost Style: Why did you name the collection Self-Portrait?

Han Chong: There is a lot of talk about selfies the last couple years... but the notion of a self-portrait actually has a long tradition within art history. Through the self-portrait, artists have been portraying the times they lived in, its style and the dominant mindset of that time. The name plays with the idea of creating a personal identity.

HPS: There are a lot of sheer elements in your design. What's the inspiration behind that?

HC: Most of the designs are rather detailed. With their layered textures and combinations of materials, these designs have multiple references to various time periods and styles. A lot of the dresses are very quite feminine, but in each collection you’ll find some more androgynous-looking pieces, too.

HPS: Who is the Self-Portrait woman?

HC: Hopefully our creations encourage women who wear them to standing out rather than just blend in. Our designs are not what you would label “utilitarian “ like many other mid-price brands out there currently.

HPS: What celebrity would you love to see wearing your designs and why?

HC: Honestly, no one in particular. I feel very privileged every time someone chooses to wear Self-Portrait. All this is still relatively new to me – this whole thing with suddenly having a market – and I find it totally amazing that a larger number of women now choose to buy my designs. I remember when a friend of mine told me that she had been to a private party and that there was this girl wearing my stuff and I felt so proud.

HPS: What's the one piece from this collection that every woman should own?

HC: I would say the Azaelea dress -- it represents the true signature of a self-portrait women.

HPS: You're a Central Saint Martins grad, so you've definitely rubbed shoulders will plenty of amazing designers. Are there any classmates or alums whose work you admire?

HC: There are many designers, also from my own generation and from previous generations who have inspired me and who I truly admire, not just one. I find other designers’ work inspiring for various reasons. I love what Simone Rocha and J.W Anderson are doing also Christopher Shannon for Menswear.

HPS: If you weren’t a fashion designer, what would you be?

HC: I started studying art and then shifted into fashion. However, I doubt I would have become a very successful artist. I have participated in a few art exhibitions and even been included in the Venice Biennial in 2009 but it is different to experiencing my designs on display in departments stores all over the world, in cities like Hong Kong, Bangkok, Milan, New York and here in London.

HPS: What question do you wish you were asked more?

HC: I am not very good in interviews, so I’d actually prefer to let my designs speak for themselves. Ha ha!

Viral video of Patriots star Tom Brady jumping off a cliff has the Internet buzzing.

The Super Bowl-winning quarterback posted his vacation stunt to Facebook Saturday with the comment, "Never doing that again!" In the video, a woman -- perhaps his wife, Gisele Bundchen? -- asks Brady, "Are you gonna jump, Tom?"

The clip then cuts to "Superman" music as Brady surveys the water below, pondering whether to take the plunge. And yes, he does.

Never doing that again! #AirBrady

Posted by Tom Brady on Saturday, March 28, 2015

We wondered if there was a collective "Yikes!" within the Patriots organization, but a team spokesman told The Huffington Post Monday that he had yet to hear any fuss.

The video has been viewed millions of times, with one comment summing up Brady's adventure thusly: "No one can say he has deflated balls now," one Facebook visitor wrote.

Brady's thrill-seeking apparently didn't end there. He was also captured in the Bahamas playing pickup basketball with Michael Jordan.

If anyone deserves to be called a real-life King Midas, it's jewelry designer Hugh Power.

The Beverly Hills-based artist runs the House Of Solid Gold, a business that turns everyday objects into gold -- everything from earbuds that cost $14,995, to $75,000 reading glasses, to a soccer ball plated with gold and diamonds that sells for a whopping $375,000.

He even once made a gold toothpick for rapper Snoop Dogg, according to an episode of Secret Lives Of The Super Rich, airing Tuesday on CNBC.

But Power's pride and joy may be his $500,000 mountain bike made with 24-karat gold.

The chain, spokes and pedals are all covered in gold, and its emblem has 500 black diamonds and 600 yellow sapphires.

The bike's logo on the front has 500 black diamonds and 600 yellow sapphires and the seat is covered in alligator skin. The final touch: a custom water bottle made of gold and wrapped in stingray hide.

Despite the blinding price, Power is confident he can sell it.

"There's so much money out there and they're looking for places to spend it," he told the show."You'll always remember who gave you the gifts of gold."

The 3 Things Ingrid Nilsen Wants Every Young Woman to Know

$
0
0
I was shaking and the room was slightly spinning. Wearing an outfit that I had meticulously picked out, I found myself standing in front of the woman, who without knowing it, helped craft the person I am today.

The woman in question is Ingrid Nilsen (aka Missglamorazzi), whose bubbly personality and impeccable fashion and beauty sense brought her to YouTube and Internet stardom. Somehow, I was in the dressing room of Story, a revolutionary store in NYC whose goal for the night was to showcase Missglamorazzi's life story through a theme called "The Story of You."

Next thing I knew, I was in front of Ingrid with my iPhone recorder on, nervously trying to tell her who I am. "Hi, I'm Anna Koppleman, I'm here from HuffPost Teen. You tweeted an article I wrote earlier this year on you. I know I only have five minutes, so I'll just ask the important questions."

She smiled the smile I had witnessed across five years of watching her YouTube videos, and the interview began.

Do you consider yourself a feminist even though most of your career is based in beauty and fashion?

I think you can be a feminist, support other women and love makeup. I think that part of being a feminist is embracing who you are -- who other women are.

What are the three most important things you would want young women to know?

1. I want women to know that they are capable of doing so much more than what they think they are capable of.

2. Don't hold yourself back. Just let go and have confidence in yourself and believe in yourself.

3. Support other women. One of my favorite things is to see my friends succeed -- to create an environment of young women rooting for each other. I hope other young women do that with their friends, too.

You've mentioned in many videos that you were picked on as a kid. When you're doing big event like being on the red carpet at the VMAs, do you think back to those kids like, "Look at me now"?

Honestly, no. That never crosses my mind, because I am really happy in those times and it's really not a revenge thing for me, like, "Hahaha, look at me now." It's just "Wow, this is really awesome and I'm just going to really enjoy this moment and the people around me."

Being online, people must always be trying to tear you down either with hateful comments or just jealousy. How do you handle others' animosity towards your successes?

I think it's natural to compare yourself to people, but I think it's important not to become obsessed with it and ruminate on those things. In the end, that holds you back from your potential. You are capable of so many things. It's nice to have people to look up to and aspire to, but it's also good to live in the present and focus on what you are passionate about.

With over 3 million subscribers, when you release a video, you are impacting the sales of products, trends and the way young women look at fashion, beauty, and even themselves. Are you aware of everyone you are impacting?

You know, it's still something I haven't fully grasped yet. It's so crazy to be working on this video and then upload it and then realize how many people are watching it because it's so hard to wrap your head around those numbers, but it is so nice to have such a caring and supportive fan base.

On a selfish note: How do you get a guy you like to like you back?

Don't try to get him to like you! If you are weird, be weird! It's not about getting a guy to like you. It's about rolling with the punches. If he doesn't like you or you guys don't click, there are plenty of other fish in the sea. I am not about trying to get somebody to like me. You just end up so much happier when you don't try; you end up relaxed and comfortable.

***

They say that when you meet your heroes, you are always disappointed, but I wasn't. There she was, Missglamorazzi, in all her glory, standing in front of me. She was smiling, I was smiling, and she was happy to have me there... or at least she made me feel that way.

Even if it sounds naive and all too innocent, I like to think that certain things in life line up for a reason -- that five years ago, when I scrolled through YouTube and found a 21-year-old Ingrid putting on eyeliner, I was meant to one day write about my fascination with her, and then meet her. Or maybe I'm just insanely lucky.

Soo Joo Park already has a number of high-end campaigns under her belt -- Chanel, DKNY, Redken to name a few -- and on Thursday morning (her birthday no less), it was announced that the model has scored another lucrative contract, this one for L'Oreal Paris.

The Asian-American model -- the first in the brand's 106-year history -- has signed on with the beauty giant as its newest model ambassador, joining the likes of Karlie Kloss, Lara Stone, Barbara Palvin and Doutzen Kroes. Getting her start at 26, the platinum-haired Californian may have taken a very unlikely career path for an aspiring model, who typically get their start in as lanky teenagers, but in the few short years she's been in the industry, her career path has the trajectory of that of a rocket ship. Now at 28, the model is excited about what an international beauty contract means, not only for her sky-rocketing career, but the industry as a whole.

The Datelob

$
0
0
In advertising, there's something called an ADLOB. It stands for "Ad Like Object" and it's called for when we need to present something to a client that's a simulacrum of an ad without being a full on ad itself. In dating, I've discovered the need for -- and therefore invented -- a similar term, a Datelob. A datelob as you might guess, stands for "Date Like Object."

In New York, where every new acquaintance is bookmarked, sorted and categorized as either social or professional networking, it can often get confusing which falls into which category. A few years ago for instance, a man contacted me on LinkedIn (which I think most people would agree is for professional networking), asking to meet to discuss a job. Schedules being what they are, we ended up finally deciding to meet for drinks. About five minutes into the meeting, it became abundantly clear that the man wasn't really interested in talking work, but rather wanted to talk play. I finished my drink and left.

Another confusing situation was when an old acquaintance from college got in touch to grab drinks and ask for advice on how he could get into advertising. I assumed the meeting was benign and agreed to meet him. Within the first half hour, he'd hit on me.

Was I being hopelessly naive in these situations? Should I have know better? Or were they simply boys being boys and keeping things casually vague so that they could make a game time choice about what they wanted out of the situation when it arose.

And given this confusion, how can I properly re-adjust my approach in the future. Like when a handsome rep recently proposed drinks to "talk about future collaboration" with my company. Date? Not date? Who knows!

As it gets increasingly more and more difficult to sort out when things should and shouldn't be kept platonic, every time I meet a person out and about (and I bet most women would agree), it's hard to determine when they want nothing more than friendship. I'm even skeptical that it's possible for a guy to ask a girl to "hang out" or get together without there being some ulterior motive. So how do we go about figuring out which scenarios are personal and which are professional? Which are platonic and which are romantic?

All that said, I wonder, if part of what's wrong with the dating world these days is our incessant need to put labels on everything. I'll admit that when I see a person on a dating site say that they're looking for "friendship," I roll my eyes a bit. But maybe it is best for first dates to be treated as meeting a new friend. That would certainly take some of the pressure off of it. And maybe the next time a new friend of the opposite sex asks me to "hang out," or an old one asks to reconnect, I'll take it at face value and see where things go. In the meantime, there's something tantalizingly unclear about a datelob.

I know I'm not alone in feeling like this was the most brutal winter in the history of the world.Thankfully, unless global weirding has broken the cycle already, warmer weather is on the way. Before we start complaining about the brutal heat, I'd like to give a toast to all the women who left their apartments in their cold armor and still managed to look stunning!

Now let's Imagine how much better they'll all look scantily clad this summer...
