Wide Waistbands, Pt. II - Thick Style

0
0
Wide waistbands on pairs of underwear are becoming a rising trend in the underwear sphere. While this look is mostly sporty, it does more than just give the dudes wearing them a more masculine look. Longer measurements have been implemented in elastic departments, which should appeal to men that are more, shall we say, brand-conscious and on-trend. The wide waistbands are also more convenient for guys who want an additional contoured fit, which slims the waistline. Part II of The Underwear Expert's Wide Waistband feature focuses on boxer briefs and trunks that give a little extra boost in your overall look - which is a bonus for most anyone.

One of the first brands to highlight wide waistbands back in 2007 was - who else? - Calvin Klein with their Steel Collection. The current Intense Power Collection has black waistbands with the brand name in intense colors.

papi also has a similar look with their Cotton Modal Collection, which is featured on The Underwear Expert website in the Brazilian Trunk style. But of course, papi's brand name is placed right smack dab in the middle of the waistband.

Discover and N2N look very similar to the Calvins - like the Intense Power Trunk, the Deer Boxer changes the waistband's name in order to complement the underwear body. The Deer Boxer has a gorgeous, super colorful print, with each letter of "DISCOVER" in a different color. Pairing them with a black elastic, this makes the color truly pop.

N2N Luxe Trunk has a dual-tone finish, with an overall sexy look. "N2N BODYWEAR" is on the front of the waistband and stretches across the band, going from hip to hip.

The Saxx Fiesta Boxer, papi, Funky Trunks, and Jor are some of the limited boxers with a colorful waistband.

Which boxers do you think you'd try out? Do you prefer wide, colorful waistbands, or plain black ones with unique details? Let us know!

This Student's Contribution To Ruth Bader Ginsburg's Collar Collection Did Not Go Unnoticed

Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, noted lover of theater and the arts, clearly appreciates the finer things in life.

So it's no surprise to hear that the Notorious R.B.G. took the time to write a thank-you note to Sahra Harvin after receiving a handmade lace collar tatted by the college student over the course of four months.

Harvin has been tatting -- the art of making certain types of lace -- since July 2014, she told The Huffington Post on Friday.

"I took a class and was instantly hooked," she said.

After making a collar for a friend with a literary blog who dresses up as characters from Victorian novels, Harvin decided to create a collar for Ginsburg, inspired by the Notorious R.B.G. meme.

"The thing about tatting is that most of the projects aren't particularly useful. Nobody needs a million doilies, but they're nevertheless fun to make. And projects are always more fun when you're making something for another person," Harvin said.

She realized Ginsburg was one person who might regularly wear a handmade lace collar.

"I thought, 'Hey! Ruth Bader Ginsburg is always wearing a lace collar over her robes! Maybe she'd like one!'" Harvin said. "As a feminist, I've always been inspired by her, and I think we are so lucky to have such an brilliant, progressive woman on the Supreme Court advocating for our rights."

Harvin sent Ginsburg the collar without expecting any response. She said she was shocked when a handwritten note of thanks appeared in her mailbox.

Harvin had worried the collar wouldn't even reach Ginsburg.

"I actually considered not sending it, because I was worried months of work would get thrown away by a staffer who didn't realize what it was," Harvin said. "It's incredible to me that she took the time to write a handwritten thank-you note. It's just so special and gracious."

The student said she hopes the note of thanks, an image of which she posted to Reddit, will catch the eye of potential tatters and inspire more people to learn the art.

The Most Iconic Jewelry in Movies

0
0

Precious jewels have provided fodder for drama practically since drama was invented, with precious stones and trinkets used as plot devices in plays written as far back as 100 B.C. As man-made substitutes such as rhinestones, moissanite and cubic zirconium started making the market for seemingly-precious stones more, well, precious, so did the real thing become more dramatic to seek out on film. Here are a few of the most sought after, revered and iconic pieces of jewelry dramatized for our viewing pleasure.

Heart of the Ocean -- Titanic

James Cameron's box office champ offered up one eye-popping set piece after the other, not the least of which was Kate Winslet's greatest asset. Get your mind out of the gutter! We're talking about the legendary Heart of the Ocean necklace worn by her character, Rose. Lore has it that the diamond was originally owned by Louis XVI and cut into a heart shape after the French Revolution. Caledon Hockley (Billy Zane), the wealthy son of a Pittsburgh steel tycoon, purchased the diamond for Rose, his fiancée, who soon finds herself swooning over Leonardo DiCaprio's starving artist, Jack Dawson.

The Pink Panther Diamond -- The Pink Panther Series

The Pink Panther is a large and valuable pink diamond, first shown in the first film of the series, released in 1963, which introduced Peter Sellers' iconic character of bumbling French police inspector Jacques Clouseau. The diamond is called the "Pink Panther," because of the flaw at its center: when viewed closely, it is said to resemble a leaping pink panther. The phrase reappears in the title of the fourth film The Return of the Pink Panther, in which the theft of the diamond is again the center of the plot. The phrase was used for all the subsequent films in the series, even when the jewel did not figure in the plot. It ultimately appeared in six of the eleven films.

One Ring -- Lord of the Rings Trilogy

Never has one piece of jewelry caused so much misery, mayhem and death as the One Ring from J.R.R. Tolkien's Lord of the Rings Trilogy. The ring is deceptive: it appears on first glance to be a ring that bears invisibility upon its wearer. However, we later learn that it was crafted by Sauron the Dark Lord as part of his design to win domination over Middle-Earth. The Lord of the Rings concerns the quest to destroy the Ring to keep Sauron from fulfilling his design. This is a good example of when a simple moissanite ring would have sufficed, not to mention saved a lot of nice people headaches (and severed limbs).

Marilyn's Diamonds -- Gentlemen Prefer Blondes

Marilyn Monroe's ode to materialism, "Diamonds Are a Girl's Best Friend," might be her most signature moment in a career that produced many. Bedecked in ice from the neck down, Marilyn's seductive jig through a parade of suitors was the ultimate symbolic salute to 1950s materialism that (depending on your POV) either blessed or cursed generations of women after. That said, few women before or since made looking sparkly quite so...sparkly.

Julia Roberts' Necklace--Pretty Woman

When wealthy tycoon Richard Gere does a My Fair Lady-style makeover on streetwalker Julia Roberts in director Garry Marshall's box office smash, his finishing touch is the stunning necklace he puts around her neck. Custom made by French jeweler Fred Joaillier, the necklace is made with 23 pear-cut rubies set in the centers of diamond encrusted hearts, set in 18k white gold. It's understandable that Gere initially snaps the box shut on Roberts' fingers as she reaches for it--we wouldn't want to give it up, either!

007's Rolex Submariner--The James Bond Series (Connery, Moore and Dalton)

The James Bond series established from the get-go that if you're a world-class secret agent, only the best will do. From the series' first film, Dr. No, in 1962, Bond wore a Rolex Submariner as his timepiece of choice. As the series progressed, the Rolex had many other functions, as well: laser beam cutter, saw, poison dart gun, etc. Designed as a diving watch by Rolex in 1954, it was largely used by military personnel until it was so popularized by the Bond films, that it remains Rolex's top-selling model today.

007's Omega Seamaster -- The James Bond Series (Brosnan and Craig)

Bond traded his Rolex (some watch enthusiasts feel in a downward direction) for an Omega Seamaster, an equally venerable sport watch made by the famous Swiss watchmaker since 1948. With its distinctive blue bezel and face, Bond's Seamaster can be worn with a short-sleeve shirt or a tuxedo with equal aplomb. Like its Rolex predecessors, Bond's Omega has also been outfitted with a variety of gadgets that have gotten the superspy both into and out of hot water.

Cache of South African Diamonds -- Diamonds Are Forever

Okay, so we're James Bond fans. If you don't like it, click on another link and be gone! In Sean Connery's last "official" turn as James Bond (Never Say Never Again, made 12 years later, is viewed by many as a "bootleg" Bond flick), 007 poses as a diamond smuggler in order to smash a group of criminals, but uncovers a plot by old nemesis Ernst Stavro Blofeld to use the diamonds in the construction of a giant laser (a precursor to drone strikes, if you will) to be used as a terrorism tool from space. The diamonds act as a "McGuffin," or forgotten plot device, until the final, very humorous shot of the film.

2015-07-11-1436601441-5308040-MIBgalaxy
The Galaxy -- Men in Black

No doubt the most complicated jewel on this list, Agents J (Will Smith) and Agent K (Tommy Lee Jones) spend most of this wild, joyful sci-fi romp seeking it out to save it, while a villainous Bug (Vincent D'Onofrio) wants to destroy it. Yes, it's an actual galaxy containing planets filled with peaceful beings, but it's also small. As in the size of a marble. As in it's hanging on a collar around a cat's neck. Protecting said galaxy around said cat's neck becomes the mission of these top secret agents of the MIB, in what has to be the most important jewel in film history, or certainly the most populous.

2015-07-11-1436601470-5372828-RD
The Bag of Diamonds -- Reservoir Dogs

Another classic example of a McGuffin, Quentin Tarantino's freshman directorial effort shocked many with its gleefully graphic violence and virtual iambic pentameter profanity, with a plot primarily revolving around a diamond heist gone horribly, horribly wrong, and the aftermath where the surviving thieves convene in a remote warehouse to ostensibly divide the loot. Of course, things get more complicated than that. Although we never actually see the diamonds in question, the bloodbath that ensues during the film's duration gives little doubt as to their value, or to the talent of the man who has simply come to be known as "Q.T."

Female Entrepreneur : Karen Quinones

2015-07-11-1436622237-5075857-KQ.jpg

I first met Karen Quinones when she walked into a luxury fashion showroom in Paris. We were working on a selection of women's wear for her boutique and I kind of fell in love. She is the kind of person that lights up a room and has the natural ability to command attention in an elegantly, understated way. Her energy bounces between tough director and sweet curiosity. She knows what she likes and is not afraid to stand behind her intuition yet open to learning about new ideas. This appears to be her formula for success. Karen has been scouting cutting edge brands for her boutique in Miami, appropriately named "En Avance," for over 20 years. She started out on Lincoln Road in Miami with a multi brand store but had the foresight to move to the Design District before any other luxury brand had even heard of it. After working with Karen on several buys; I had the chance to collaborate with her on a "Pop Up Shop" during Miami's Art Basel. The experience was like tagging along with the Mayor of Miami's Design District. She knows everything that is going on as far as business development of the district, has the admiration of local business owners and the devoted trust of her clients. The thing Karen would hate to admit is she is also strikingly beautiful and the woman who will roll up her sleeves and jump into any task, big or small, with equal dedication. I wanted to know more about Karen and hit her up with a few questions....

EP - I have never fully asked you about your background and driving force. How did you get to where you are and is it what you envisioned?

KQ - As a child I grew up surrounded by fashion. My grandmother made couture bridal gowns and my father worked at a men's store that specialized in custom suiting. Fashion is in my DNA.

My grandmother taught me how to sew and at a very early age I was making my own clothes... mainly pants. As a child I wasn't allowed to wear pants so in high school, I would change into my pants at the bus stop. Sorry Dad..
.
At the age of 15 I started working in retail and never looked back.

EP - Opening a boutique is a brave venture and relocating a boutique an even more courageous act. What were the signs that helped you make that decision?

KQ - Well my decision to move from Lincoln Road was due to the fact that my building was sold and the new landlord quadrupled my rent. It was a difficult time for me as I am a creature of habit and to move my business to the Design District which at that time was mainly abandoned buildings, home interior and design firms, took a big leap of faith. I basically had to start over. Necessity is the mother of all
(re) invention

2015-07-11-1436622281-6467584-Store1.PNG

EP - How did it feel when the major fashion houses started dropping stores around you? Was it more threat of competition or justification that you have vision?

KQ - After being alone in the Design District for so long, it was great to see the majors coming in. After all, this was the plan outlined for me back in 2006, it just took a lot longer than expected because of the crash in 2008. And of course it's always great to have Hermes and Dior as your neighbors.

On the flip side, with major names come major increases which lead me to my move one block West nearly 2 years ago.

EP - You have built your business on being a few steps ahead; what brands have you pioneered and what brands are on your horizon?

KQ - I see several innovative Designers coming out of Eastern Europe. I recently saw Paskal while working in Paris and I was impressed by her laser-cut technique. She seems to be the most promising Ukrainian Designer.

2015-07-11-1436622341-4038188-Store2.PNG

EP - Do you identify as a female entrepreneur? What have been some of the obstacles and advantages of your gender?

KQ - I don't feel I have had any advantages being a Latin female in this business in fact the opposite, it's challenging to get respect in this business. I've been in business for nearly 25 years now and I still face obstacles. In my dealings with landlords, it has been especially difficult as my last two landlords were men.

EP - You are always on the go; can you share a snapshot of your travel schedule?

KQ - My travel schedule for Pre-Spring market was hectic.
I started the month of June in NYC, then back to Miami, off to Milan, back to Miami, off to Paris to wrap up market and back to Miami July 1st.

EP - Retailers are having a tough time dealing with client retention due to the expanded options offered by the internet and overall flooding of the market with goods. How do you plan to keep your business viable?

KQ - With internet shopping at your fingertips, it's very difficult at times. There needs to be regulations for online stores, especially from Europe who ship tax free but that's another issue...

In order to stay relevant, I too have an online store but I make sure I have different designers...the smaller brands that are hard to find online. Also, I think the client still wants that personal service and the in-store experience. I still need to touch the fabric, see the details and those things aren't possible online.

EP - What advice do you have for any person who has ever dreamed of having a shop?

KQ - If it's your dream, understand that it's hard work. You have to love what you do and do what you love. Never follow trends, your instinct is key along with dedication and commitment.

EP - You are obviously following your passion and that dedication has lead to your success. What have you learned by doing what you love?

KQ - I have learned that less is more. Attention to detail is most important. Also trust your instincts.

EP - Without giving too much away; what is next?

KQ - I would love to have a small store in either NY or Paris...who knows, maybe one day.

Another day, another viral Instagram post from Miss Amber Rose.

The 31-year-old model gave her 7.1 million followers something to double-tap on Saturday when she posted pictures of herself lounging poolside in a teeny white swimsuit:

Last month, Rose told Cosmopolitan that the slut-shaming she sometimes gets on social media has only made her feel more comfortable with herself.

"You get to a certain point in your life where you really find out who you are, and sometimes that happens when you're 25, but for me, it was 31," she told the magazine. "I didn't quite know that before. I guess social media did help create the feminist monster that I've become."

You do you, Amber.

Demi Lovato, singer, actress and self-love advocate, wants everyone to love their curves.

The 22-year-old took to Instagram on Saturday night to share some words of encouragement with her 18.6 million followers. The star posted a photo of herself, clad in a summer-appropriate watercolor floral onesie, with the caption, "Learn to lurrrrrvveee yerrrrr currrrrvveees. I actually used to hate them... But then a special someone helped me learn how to love them... And he sure loves them ...#squats #COOLFORTHESUMMER."

The "Cool For The Summer" singer, who many believe was referencing boyfriend Wilmer Valderrama in her caption, has been very open about her struggles with body image, and often turns to social media to share positive messages.

Earlier this month, the former Disney star took to Twitter to shut down body-shamers who criticized her for wearing a revealing bikini top while promoting her new single.

Lovato also regularly posts makeup-free selfies, encouraging her fans to do the same.

Demi, always keepin' it real.

Miss Oklahoma Wins Miss USA Contest

0
0

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — Olivia Jordan of Oklahoma was crowned Miss USA on Sunday, wearing a hot pink strapless dress as she deftly fielded the interview portion of the competition by saying the country needed to improve race relations to beat out 50 other contestants.

After weeks of controversy generated by pageant co-owner Donald Trump's critical comments about Mexican immigrants, the pageant passed with no mention of the real estate mogul who was not in attendance.

Instead, the focus was on women like Jordan and others who'd worked hard to get to the stage.

The 26-year-old winner was followed by first runner-up Ylianna Guerra, 22, of Texas, and second runner-up Anea Garcia, 20, of Rhode Island. They were followed by 25-year-old Miss Nevada Brittany McGown as third runner-up and then Miss Maryland Mame Adjei, 23, rounding out the top five.

Jordan, who takes over from 2014 winner Nia Sanchez of Nevada, was a standout during the interview segment when each contestant was asked two questions and given 30 seconds to answer each. When asked what the next big issue is that the U.S. needs to tackle, she said it was race relations.

"We have not solved this issue," Jordan said. "We really need to work on being an accepting society."

During the second interview question about which woman should be put on the new $10 bill, she initially said she wished television star Oprah Winfrey was eligible before ending by suggesting Harriet Tubman, a former slave who led other escaped slaves to freedom.

Asked afterward by The Associated Press about the Trump controversy, Jordan responded: "We have freedom of speech in this country, and immigration is certainly an important issue."

She added, "This organization is not one person. It's definitely not just me. It's a family. This organization celebrates diversity, and I think that was clear on the stage tonight, and I look forward to spreading a message of love and diversity and acceptance."

The annual contest, generally known for its dazzling dresses and sexy swimsuits, was this year under an uncomfortable spotlight due to comments made by Trump, the pageant's co-owner.

Trump slammed Mexican immigrants during his announcement that he was running for president. That led to widespread fallout against his business dealings, including the pageant.

Broadcasters, including NBC and Univision, dropped the pageant and a slew of celebrities lined up to perform, judge and host dropped out just as the pageant was kicking into high gear in Baton Rouge.

Pageant organizers rushed to fill the gap so the show could go on. Satellite and cable channel Reelz television stepped in to air the show, while assuring people that Trump would not benefit financially. It was also streamed live on the pageant's website. And former Miss USA and Miss Universe winners were recruited as judges.

The pageant featured an evening wear and swimsuit competition as well as the question and answer session. The preliminary contest was held earlier this week and then the number of women remaining was progressively narrowed during the course of Sunday evening's telecast.

Jordan, of Tulsa, Oklahoma attended Boston University, where she earned a B.S. in Health Science and was a group fitness instructor and a personal trainer. She has appeared in several national and international commercials and feature films, most recently, Hot Tub Time Machine 2.

Paula Shugart, who heads the Miss Universe Organization, thanked the CEO of Reelz and the returning pageant winners for stepping in to help during a news conference Sunday.

"I love you all. You are the only reason we exist," she said to the women during a news conference Sunday.

Shugart said the challenges of the past few weeks will make for great practice for whichever woman is crownedMiss USA, teaching them how to stay focused: "You have to forget everything going on around you."

When asked if the relationship between the pageant and Reelz would last beyond Sunday night, Stan Hubbard said the agreement was for one night only.

The 51 women represented every state and the District of Columbia.

Jordan will hold the title for a year and will go on to represent the United States in the Miss Universe pageant.

Senior Pageant Queens Prove Beauty Has No Expiration Date

0
0

A far cry from the stereotypically cut-throat and ruthless beauty pageants you've heard about, Ms. Senior America is more about working what you've got than winning a tiara.

The annual pageant calls on women age 60 and up to showcase their talents, inner beauty and fashion sense in order to find "the gracious lady who best exemplifies the dignity, maturity and inner beauty of all senior Americans."

This year, photographer Everett Meissner was on hand to photograph the Massachusetts state-level competition and the images made our jaws drop.

"I discovered the Ms. Senior America Pageant and felt it would be interesting [to photograph] since most standards of beauty relate to youth," Meissner told The Huffington Post.

He took photos of not only the contestants but also previous winners. "They showed a great sense of camaraderie with each other," Meissner said. "It felt like more of a celebration than a competition."

Meissner says he was most struck by the women's attitudes. "These women were confident and strong-willed. You could tell by speaking with them that they had a very positive view of their age and a confidence in their beauty," he said. And that graceful aging is evident in every single one of his stunning images -- showing the women radiant in their shiny gowns and glittery jewelry.

"The way they embrace their age with pride instead of thinking of it in a negative way goes a long way," he said. Indeed.

Work it, ladies!

This Is What A Woman Looks Like

0
0

Serena Williams, the most dominant female athlete of her time -- and arguably the most dominant, full stop -- won her 21st career Grand Slam title on Saturday at Wimbledon.

Simultaneously a world-class athlete and a style icon, she lifted her sixth Wimbledon Venus Rosewater Dish with a rose gold diamond-set Audemars Piguet watch secured to her wrist. She looked, it must be said, completely awesome and totally in control.

One day before, The New York Times published a story entitled, "Tennis’s Top Women Balance Body Image With Ambition," in which the coach of fellow tennis pro Agnieszka Radwanska said they have decided to keep Agnieszka's weight down in part because "first of all she’s a woman, and she wants to be a woman.”

But who looks more like a woman than Serena Williams? No one, that's who.

The night following her victory, Serena took her title out on the town to the Wimbledon Champions Dinner at the Guild Hall in London.

Per usual for a powerful woman, Serena has dealt with more scrutiny of her looks than her male peers. One man felt compelled to tweet at J.K. Rowling over the weekend to say Serena is "built like a man." No, she is not. What does that even mean?

She is glorious. And more importantly, she is the kind of woman we should want our daughters to look up to.

This year's Wimbledon men's champion, Novak Djokovic, was mesmerized by Serena's grace.  Who wouldn't be? Only small, scared men, that's who.

Holding her trophy while in a jewel-encrusted dress, Serena reminded us that no one should ever think femininity and athleticism are mutually exclusive.

Serena Williams is what a woman looks like. Bye, haters.

Kristen Stewart Talks Aging, Success And Apologizing In Marie Claire August Issue

0
0

Kristen Stewart is the latest star to grace the cover of Marie Claire, and girl looks amazing.

Inside the August 2015 issue, the 25-year-old gets candid about everything from aging to finding success -- and finding peace with her public image.

"I’m really proud that I am able to move forward and not fall into every mental crater. That’s a new thing for me. Age has made me smarter and calmer. And it is fucking awesome," she told the mag.

The star, who's been in the public eye since she was just a kid, explained the difficulties she faced as a teen in the industry.

“Between ages 15 and 20, it was really intense. I was constantly anxious. I was kind of a control freak. If I didn’t know how something was going to turn out, I would make myself ill, or just be locked up or inhibited in a way that was really debilitating.”

Stewart's anxiety in the public eye is unsurprising, as she was often criticized during the early days of her fame -- she looked too sad on the red carpet, she was too "awkward" in interviews -- but she's done living in the conventional realm of what it means to be an actress. And she's definitely done with apologizing for doing things her way.

"Lately, I’ve been doing less of the ‘I’m sooooo sorry,’" she explained. "And more of the ‘No. Fuck. Jesus.'"

That unapologetic attitude has carried on to her personal appearance, too. More specifically, her ever-changing hair.

"My hair was such a crutch. I looked quote unquote 'sexy' no matter what. I could hide behind it. As soon as I didn't have all that hair, I had to let my face hang out. I felt more confident than I had in a really long time. And it felt really good. Maybe to most people, long hair is prettier. But then what? Is your main goal in life to be desired? That is boring as fuck."

#SorryNotSorry.

You can read Kristen's entire interview when the magazine hits newsstands on July 21.

Inside Prince William's First Day At New Job As Ambulance Pilot

LONDON (AP) — Prince William clocked in for his first shift as an air ambulance pilot on Monday, nervous but excited about his new job.

The second-in-line to Britain's throne will face emergencies ranging from traffic accidents to heart attacks in his role working for East Anglian Air Ambulance in eastern England. William will juggle his royal duties with nine-and-a-half hour shifts in the first few months — including night shifts — as part of a rotation where he will work four days and then have four days off. He'll work less in the future to accommodate royal tasks.

"I feel doing a job like this really helps me to be grounded and that's the core of what I'm trying to become," he said. "I'm trying to be a good guy, to do what I can and trying to be a decent individual."

William will also juggle both jobs with fatherhood. He took unpaid leave in April after he wrapped up his first phase of training, and has returned following the birth of Princess Charlotte, whom he described as "a little joy from heaven."

"At the same time, there is a lot of responsibility, especially when George is around — he's been a little monkey," he said. "It's no more difficult than what everyone else has to do."

William and his crewmates began work right way, responding to a first emergency call at 9:20 a.m. The charity will release details of the incident later Monday.

The prince, who will donate his salary to charity, has previously been a Royal Air Force search-and-rescue pilot based on an island off Wales.

Another day, another sexy bikini selfie from Emily Ratajkowski. Who else?

The 24-year-old Sports Illustrated swimsuit model is currently vacationing in Italy, and she's got all the Instagram pictures to prove it.

In one snap, (the most risqué) the model-turned-actress is seen gazing out to the beautiful landscape with her backside to the camera. She captioned the cheeky photo with an Italian flag emoji and the hashtags "#belmondpostcards #ppandemeatpasta2015 #ravello."

And there's plenty more where that came from. The "Blurred Lines" video girl modeled her swimwear like the pro she is, using the gorgeous backdrop to her advantage. She also got cozy with a few of the locals.

The brunette beauty also shared a video of herself out for dinner, waiting for her food to arrive. She captioned the video, "Italian food got me like...#ppandemeatpasta2015."

Nike Launches Flyease, Changing The Game For People With Disabilities

For college sophomore Matthew Walzer, simply putting on his shoes was an impossible task. Lacking the dexterity to get his foot in and out of his shoes, the Florida teen, who was born with cerebral palsy, had to enlist the help of his mother and father or others. While he could dress himself, Walzer, 19, told The Huffington Post, “shoes were the one issue” he had learned to deal with and accept.

Until he wanted change.

“By the time you turn 16," he said, "it gets frustrating or embarrassing if you're out with your friends and your shoe comes untied and you have to ask your friend, ‘Hey, can you bend down and tie my shoe for me?’”

So he decided to do something about it. Walzer, then in high school, sent a letter to Nike, first reaching out in 2012. He was intimidated, he said, but persistent.

“It took me a couple years to kind of just figure out exactly what I wanted to say in the right way,” he said.

But luckily for Walzer, his letter ended up in the hands of Nike CEO Mark Parker, who in turn passed it along to Tobie Hatfield, the company’s senior director of athlete innovation. Coincidentally, Hatfield had just embarked on his own journey to explore what Nike could do to help athletes facing physical challenges as well as the Challenged Athletes Foundation.

What resulted in the three years since was a partnership between Walzer and Hatfield’s team at Nike that culminated Monday with the company's unveiling of the Zoom Soldier 8 Flyease. The shoe is the first of its kind for the company, and perhaps any athletic brand specifically designed and dedicated to help those with disabilities and difficulties of buying and wearing shoes. It will be available July 16 in limited quantities at Nike.com for North America.

“We used Matthew as a muse, which was awesome because he couldn’t believe that a big company would do something for him,” Hatfield told HuffPost.

Hatfield began his work in developing shoes and technology for athletes with disabilities back in 2006 with Sarah Reinertsen, a professional paratriathlete, whose leg was amputated when she was 7 years old.

“She was mentioning how much of a hassle it is to buy a pair of shoes, cut the shoe ... and fit it and glue it on, velcro it on, tape it on, all that kind of stuff,” Hatfield recalled. “She was like, really sheepishly, ‘Do you think, you could maybe help?’ And I looked at it and I said, ‘Damn, Sarah, you have to do all of that?’”

Hatfield said that while Reinertsen struggled, she acknowledged the greater difficulties faced by other amputees she worked with who didn’t have the support system of a professional athlete.

“She said the hassle factor was too high, that they wouldn’t even get out and be active because of it. And I said, ‘That’s just not acceptable. We can do better,’” Hatfield said.

Nike Sole, a foam cover for the carbon fiber prosthetic blade developed in 2012, is now used by amputees like Reinertsen and others while competing or participating in physical activity.

However, the technology that wasn't the only groundbreaking factor. The company's distribution of the product proved innovative as well. For the first time in its history, Nike handed over the intellectual property of a design to another organization -- Össur, an orthopaedics and prosthetics company.

“They know their consumer base way better than we do,” Hatfield said.

From there, he began to learn about other challenged athletes -- “not just amputees, but people with cerebral palsy, people with diabetes” -- and to work toward solutions to make their lives easier. It was also an area that hit close to home for the Nike family, after Jeff Johnson, the company’s first employee suffered a stroke in 2004, subsequently losing use of the right side of his body.

“He couldn’t put his shoes on because of that, he couldn’t tie them. So, similar to cerebral palsy where you lose your dexterity, you lose the feeling and you the ability essentially -- what we take for advantage, to put shoes on and to tie them -- they couldn’t tie them,” Hatfield said.

With Walzer’s letter, success with Reinertsen and the motivation to help Johnson, Hatfield created Flyease technology, which, he says, allows for rear entry and no laces to tie, while still managing to provide support.

“Easy entry, easy access, easy adjustment, easy closure,” he said of the shoe.

The first iteration of Flyease appears on the Zoom Soldier 8, a LeBron James Nike series. (The Cleveland Cavalier star also happens to be Walzer’s favorite athlete.) The structure of a basketball hi-top shoe also provides the ankle support needed by people who may have cerebral palsy.

“It just made sense that we connected all of those dots,” Hatfield said.

"There is a real need for a solution like this and it feels good to be a part of something that is going to help so many people," James said on Nike.com.

As part of the Zoom Soldier series, Flyease technology will stay with Nike and be sold and distributed by the company. For Walzer, the ability to buy a shoe from Nike rather than a specialized company is a transformative experience.

"Up until working with Nike, when I needed a new pair of shoes, we had to go the mall and make a day out of it. We'd go to every store,” Walzer said. “Before even seeing if they were comfortable, it had to be easy for my parents to get my foot into the shoe.”

Hatfield echoed Walzer, saying selling the shoe will give the opportunity for many others “to be able to utilize something that really wasn’t ever designed for them before until now.”

For Nike, it could mean more partnerships, Hatfield said, particularly with the military, which is also at the forefront of progress for injured veterans. Working with Center for the Intrepid in San Antonio, Texas, which helps military amputees and burn victims, Hatfield said Nike helped shoes fit better with medical braces.

Hatfield underscored that while Nike is excited about what it’s been able to accomplish so far for people with disabilities, the company “want[s] to do it right.”

If Walzer can, he’ll be a part of that team. His dream is to be working for Nike in the future in some capacity, he said. For both men, the Zoom Soldier 8 Flyease means, in a way, more than the company has ever achieved before for any major star or athlete.

“It’s so important for quality of life, it’s not always about trying to win a gold medal or achieve a world record,” Hatfield said, before invoking Nike's mantra: “If you have a body, you’re an athlete”

With the release of the Zoom Soldier 8 Flyease, Hatfield said the company is already working on further developments, including a running shoe that incorporates Flyease technology. The Zoom Soldier 8 Flyease will be sent to the two U.S. basketball teams participating in the 2015 Special Olympics World Summer Games in Los Angeles from July 25 through Aug. 2. Hatfield added that Nike has also been working with the U.S. Paralympic Rugby Wheelchair team on technology that makes it easier for athletes to remain in the chair while competing.

“It’s basically kind of kickstarted a lot of work in this area,” Hatfield said of the shoe and the company’s hopes to continue innovating.

“Once you start down this road, I don’t know how you could ever go back,” he said.

Why Not You?

I've shared before that I'm in my first year of modeling, having finally decided to buck tradition and pursue my lifelong dream.

But you may not know that this isn't my first time on the merry-go-round of fashion--I had the chance to follow my dream 15 years ago, and turned it down. As a teenager, I was "discovered" in a mall in Columbus, OH and did a test shoot with a local photographer. I booked a bridal runway show, as well as fit work and a local T.V. appearance for Layne Bryant. At 15, I had already landed a dream client and didn't even realize how fortunate I was!

There came a point where I had a decision to make. I was getting positive feedback and a few people in the industry were telling me that I had what it takes. "Go to New York!" they said, advising that this was the way to test the waters and make a serious attempt to make modeling a full-time career for myself. This defied anything that I had ever imagined for myself and anything that I felt I was worthy of at that time in my life. Instead of running with it, I chose to play it safe and take a more traditional path, which is something that I regretted for a very long time.

2015-07-10-1436558227-9720567-M2.jpg

Here I am, almost 15 years later, and I'm finally putting it all on the line and modeling as a professional in New York City. This photo is from my first test of my modeling endeavor this time around, shot by Plus Model Magazine Editor-in-Chief and Fashion Photographer Madeline Jones.

This year has been exhilirating and filled with incredible experiences. I am eternally grateful to my agency, TRUE Model Management, for all of the opportunities they've generated for me. Though it's going really well right now, there are still some days when those same insecurities that kept me playing it safe back in High School still come up and haunt me. I get to a casting, or on set, and find myself wondering, "What am I doing here?" This is pretty normal for most people that are taking on a new challenge and trying to learn a new craft, but it makes for crap pictures if I don't keep myself in check mentally!

"You just have to go in there and feel like you belong in there, like you can go toe-to-toe with the biggest names in this industry," said my Booker the other day. "They're going to hire somebody for this work, Melinda. Why not YOU?"

Beyoncé is famous for using her stage "alter ego" to help her overcome her stage fright and confidence issues, with "Sasha Fierce" in 2010 and most recently, "Yoncé." Not one to argue with Queen Bee, I recently developed an alter ego of my own to help prop me up in those moments where I'm not feeling quite worthy of the opportunities before me: Melania Stardust.

2015-07-10-1436558358-6154092-sashafierce.jpg

While this may seem really silly to some, it really does work to help make you feel invincible and project confidence! Here is an image of Beyoncé in full on Sasha Fierce mode, owning her star power on stage!

The point is, whatever mechanism you're using, find a way to get yourself in a state of mind where you can face down your fears and take steps to fulfill your dreams. After all, someone out there is going to get that promotion, boyfriend, dream house, etc.--why not YOU?

How To Stretch Out Your Shoes Using Only A Plastic Baggie And Water

By Caitlin E. Harrington, writer at LittleThings.com

It might be a little cliché, but really, what woman doesn't love a pair of heels? They elongate your legs, dress up even your most casual outfit, and add just a touch of sexiness. In every woman's closet you will find that there are two types of heels: the tried and true, reliable pair, and the gorgeous pair that are so painful to wear that they sit on your shoe rack collecting dust.

The go-to pair of heels is a must have. They are a pair of heels that match just about any outfit; have an appropriate heel height for any occasion, whether it be going to work, bar hopping, or heading to a fancy event; and they are something you can stand to wear for hours at a time.

The second type of shoe, the "gorgeous and painful," will drain your wallet and break your heart when you realize an hour into wearing them that your feet are slowly suffocating, and you can no longer feel your toes, a pain that was felt by a BroBible editor who took on the challenge of wearing women's heels for a day.

The good news is that this life hack video will show you how to turn each and every pair of heels in your closet into a go-to pair that won't leave your toes numb! All you need are some plastic baggies and a little warm water, and voila! Your shoes will fit as perfectly as Cinderella's glass slipper.

Worth the Splurge Makeup Products

0
0
I am always on the hunt for cheaper products that are comparable to their more expensive versions. There is just something so satisfying from getting the same $65 look from a foundation for only $15. That being said, I have found products out there that are definitely on the pricier side but really do live up to the hype. I have searched far and wide and have not yet been able to find a double for these items. These products are worth looking into If you are in the market for some high end products that will be worth your money. Now without any further ado here is a list of a few of my beauty must haves that are definitely worth the splurge.

NARS Blush, Orgasm 0.16 oz. $30

This blush will give your face a glowy ethereal look that you will not be able to duplicate with another blush. A little goes a long way with this color. It is highly pigmented and extremely blendable. If you have a little extra change and are looking to treat yourself, this blush is worth every penny.

stila Magnificent Metals Foil Finish Eye Shadow, Kitten $32

If you are looking for something a little extra to make your eyeshadow pop then stila's foil eyeshadow in Kitten is exactly what you are looking for. It provides a shimmer that I haven't found duplicated in any other paint pot.

bobbi brown long-wear gel eyeliner black ink $19

This is perfect if you are looking for that liquid liner look without the difficulty of liquid liner application. The color is an intense black that glides on smoothly and dries looking just like a liquid. Some gel liners tend to get flakey or dry out quickly in the pot causing you to prematurely toss it out. This long wear liner keeps its consistency overtime and is just as easy to apply out of the jar two or three months after purchasing.

HOURGLASS Ambient Lighting Palette: Dim light -Incandescent Light -Radiant Light $69

I firmly believe this is a magical powder with magical powers. It blurs and defuses many of the issues you might be having on your skin. The three colors offer you different options for multiple areas of your face. It is an effortless and well-blended powder that works great with all skin tones. I recommend this pallet to all my clients.

Smash Box Photo Finish Foundation Primer Oil Free 30ml/1oz $29

Hands down this is my favorite face primer. It glides on smoothly while minimizing pores. This primer perfectly preps the skin to allow for the smoothest application of your foundation. I have found products that come close but still seem to fall short of the quality of this product.

MAKE UP FOR EVER Smoky Extravagant Mascara Black 0.23 oz $36

This mascara glides on smoothly without any clumps or hassle. It thickens and elongates while still keeping all your lashes separated. I stumbled upon this product a few years ago when it was given to me as a gift. I'm not sure if it's the wand design or the actual consistency of the mascara itself that makes it so wonderful but whatever it is I believe it is the best mascara I have tried on the market.

Yves Saint Laurent Top Secrets All-In-One BB Cream Skintone Perfector SPF 25 PA++ Medium 40ml/1.3oz $53

BB cream is great for people who aren't about all the fuss of makeup application. It is a primer, a foundation, and an SPF all in one. I was never big on BB cream until I tried this and I fell in love. It provides great coverage yet is super light on the skin. The product is perfect for summer.

Beauty Blender Original Blender Sponge - 0.15 oz $16

The Beauty Blender is a tiny reusable makeup sponge that allows for even and effortless foundation application, and it is AH-MAZING. It leaves you with similar effects to that of airbrushing and will never leave streaks in your skin the way a brush can. It is fast, effective, easy to clean, and does not soak up all your product like other sponges can. This little gadget has BIG powers. This is another product I recommend to anyone and everyone.

NARS Velvet Matte Lip Pencil, Dragon Girl $24

If you love a classic red lip this is the product for you. Finding a perfect red is always a challenge. Usually, I find the colors to be too orangey or too maroon. This color is the perfect combination of both. Red Dragon is highly pigmented with long lasting staying power that doesn't dry out your lips. This pencil alone has upped my red lip game into a new level.
