Painfully Close Photos Of Human Faces Look Strangely Inhuman

$

Glance at a crowd of people from a great enough distance and they'll cease to even look human, their particular parts fading out of focus until the pack resembles a uniform army of flesh-colored toy soldiers.

Zoom in and you'll see their hands and hair and the choice of shoes. Keep going and you'll make out the shapes of their noses, the textures of their faces, the color of their eyes. Keep zooming and the temporary relief of human familiarity is ripped off like a scab, as every tooth, every ear, every pimple, every scar, becomes a singular visual event.

Brooklyn-based photographer Bruce Gilden gets close. So close, in fact, that by gazing upon one of his color portraits you can almost feel hot breath emanating from them, smelling just a bit sour. "You know, I’m photographing people that are not only left behind in most cases, but they’re actually invisible because people don’t want to see them," Gilden explained in an interview with GUP Magazine.

"I get close because I try to get close to the soul of the people in my pictures," he added. On the way to the soul, Gilden surely gets a good glimpse of the face, every blemish, wrinkle and pore, turning one of photography's most tried and true tropes -- portraiture -- into something unsettling, a little gut-wrenching.

Gilden, who is now 68 years old, has been taking photographs since 1968, when he was a student in college. He's known for his impulsive style, catching intriguing pedestrians off guard, leaping before them with his camera in one hand and his flash in the other. "Some are taken unawares, some are surprised," he told PBS. "Some didn't know what hit them. And I think most people like to be photographed. But since I work in a spontaneous way, I have to be a little bit sneaky because I don't want them to know that I'm going to take a picture of them."

Gilden's series, "Face," captures the full frontal expressions of people he describes as "underdogs," those outside the zones of gentrification, not privileged enough to possess the plasticky exterior of the masses. Finding subjects in places from Las Vegas to Des Moines to Milwaukee to West Bromwich, England, Gilden snaps their every quirk and blemish with the authority of a mugshot and the precision of a medical image. Whiteheads bulge with the promise of puss, foundation cakes up like dust gathering on a corpse. What Lucian Freud did to the body Gilden does to the head.

Gilden is not, however, spotlighting his subjects as particularly grotesque aberrations of the human being. He himself identifies with the outsider status of his subjects, and he respects them for it. "I identify with these people in my pictures, because I’m actually photographing myself. The people in my pictures interest me. I like them, and they motivate me."

Gilden's portraits may be unforgiving, brutal, ugly, even grotesque. Yet this visceral ugliness isn't the signal of a monster, but of a human being. One not sanitized and scrubbed clean, buttoned up and plugged in. For Gilden, the ugly is the good stuff, and maybe even lets the soul peer out.

Shonda Rhimes Finally Explains Why She Killed Off Derek Shepherd On 'Grey's Anatomy'

At long last, "Grey's Anatomy" creator Shonda Rhimes has explained why she ruined the show killed off the dreamiest doctor at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital.

On Tuesday, Rhimes told reporters at the Television Critics Association’s press tour that the decision to kill off Derek Shepherd (Patrick Dempsey) at last season's end was a "difficult one."

"What were the options? Derek was going to walk out on Meredith and leave her high and dry, and what was that going to mean? That was going to suggest that their love was not true, that the thing we said for 11 years was a lie, and McDreamy wasn’t McDreamy," Rhimes said. "For me, that was untenable. Meredith and Derek’s love had to remain Meredith and Derek’s love. So as painful as that was for me as a storyteller, the only way to preserve what felt true to me was that Derek was going to have to die in order for that to remain honest."

The 45-year-old writer and executive producer added, "I really couldn’t have the idea that he turned out to be a bad guy who walked out on his wife and his kids be a true story. To me, that was the only way to make Meredith and Derek’s magic remain true and remain frozen in time.”

The character's death came as huge shock to fans, who did not accept his fate easily and actually petitioned for his return.

Meanwhile, viewers weren't the only ones who shocked by the decision. Former "Grey's" star Katherine Heigl, told "Entertainment Tonight" she was "devastated" by the character's death, adding, "I just can't imagine the show without McDreamy. It's just so hard to picture."

That's not a worry for ABC President Paul Lee, who said he was on board with Rhimes' decision to off McDreamy.

“We’ve seen the pitch for 'Grey’s' next season,” he told reporters at TCA on Tuesday. “The show reinvents itself again. She really is a remarkable showrunner, and we have no reason to expect that 'Grey’s Anatomy' won’t go on for many years to come."

It's been a big year for beauty vlogger and transgender activist Gigi Gorgeous, and she credits that to being true to herself.

"I think this year I was the most honest with myself in comparison to other years," she told us at VidCon 2015. "I was honest with what I wanted to do with my career, and I took on different roles and I did different projects that I wouldn't have necessarily been involved with before. And I think that just worked."

Gigi has 1.6 million subscribers on YouTube and has appeared on shows like Project Runway, and she uses her internet fame to bring awareness to transgender issues. She said that she still deals with discrimination and bullying, but she focuses on the positive and on being unique and original.

"At the end of the day, it's all you. You are in control of your own life."

How John Legend Feels About Chrissy Teigen's Social Media Posts

Chrissy Teigen is without a doubt one of the most popular models on social media, sharing everything from behind-the-scenes videos from her shoots to funny commentaries to photos of her at home with her husband, singer John Legend. While a lot of people adore her posts, Teigen's outspoken nature and racier pictures also draw criticism. She's certainly not bothered by it, but is her husband?

When the couple sat down with Oprah for an interview on OWN, Oprah asked Legend if he ever feels Teigen crosses the line. Legend admits that, at first, he wasn't too sure about Teigen's candid posts.

"When Twitter first started, I was worried. Like, don't be too honest, don't share too much," Legend says. "But, then, I think she's actually more brazen on Twitter than she is just in regular life. She shows more of her sweet side in regular life."

A photo posted by @chrissyteigen on

Soon enough, Legend adds, he came around.

"Once I got used to it… I love it," he says.

Even Teigen's nude photos don't bother him. "The thing is, I see her in Sports Illustrated and it's no different," he says with a laugh.

A photo posted by @chrissyteigen on

One of Teigen's favorite things about her husband is that he humors her, she says. "He makes me feel like I'm the funniest, most beautiful person on Earth, all the time," Teigen tells Oprah. "I feel like he believes it!"

The two are tight, but they don't speak for each other, Legend clarifies.

"A lot of times, they want us to be like the president and first lady, where anything she says represents my views or represents us as a couple," he says. "I feel like she should be her own entity and her own persona. I'm not going to say, 'So you can serve my needs and my career, you have to muzzle yourself and not be who you are.' Because part of what I fell in love with was that person who she is."

A photo posted by @chrissyteigen on

At the same time, there is one type of social media comment that upsets Teigen.

"What does hurt me is when someone writes me something like, 'I am upset with John right now because of something you said,' or 'I'm not going to buy John's music,'" she says. "That hurts me because I never mean to connect him in any of my crazy things that I spew out."

Ultimately, though, neither Teigen nor Legend is interested in shielding who they really are.

"Us being authentic is better than us not being authentic," Legend says. "I think she has a lot more fans than any other model would ever have because people connect to her as a person. I think why people love her -- and some people hate her… is because she's not afraid to be herself."

This Is When You Need A Tie, In One Handy Chart

Men pretty much have it made when it comes to getting dressed. That is, of course, except for one small detail: the tie. It's hard enough to figure out all the different ways to knot one, let alone know when you should and should not wear one in the first place.

Figuring out when you can get away with the tieless look just became a little bit easier, thanks to this handy infographic by Business Insider. As it turns out, opting for a tie has everything to do with the collar of your shirt.

Unsurprisingly, shirts that have more traditionally styled collars require you to wear one, while edgier styles, like "the cut," for example, can be left as is.

With summer wedding season still in full force, there's no time like the present to figure out if you've been correctly sporting your ties. And if you're still not sure about when to wear a tie, check out these adorable pups who are getting it so right.

By Sarah Stodola for Fathom | The retail scene in Brooklyn gets a makeover on the regular. And no one knows that better than Strolby, the Brooklyn-based website that showcases and sells products from incredible indie boutiques around the world. Editorial director Sarah Stodola has the scoop on the best up-and-coming shops in Brooklyn.

BROOKLYN – A stroll through any number of Brooklyn's of-the-moment neighborhoods quickly confirms that the borough has emerged as perhaps the most dynamic location in the United States for indie shops. Already known for setting global trends, the retail scene here continues to evolve, with dashing new home stores opening along Atlantic Avenue in Boerum Hill, shops rising on the previously bereft Myrtle Avenue in Fort Greene, and innovative clothing boutiques going toe-to-toe with — and besting — the chains popping up in Williamsburg.

Here are ten amazing new shops that are reinventing Brooklyn all over again.

Sharktooth
111 Grand St., Williamsburg; +1- 718-451-2233
Owner Erin Boyle made her mark giving antique textiles a contemporary second life by dying them deep shades of indigo — the effect was as transformative as it was unprecedented. From her new South Williamsburg shop (she formerly occupied a much smaller space in downtown Brooklyn), she also sells unaltered vintage rugs and bedding in impeccable restored condition, and at refreshingly reasonable prices.

Patterns and textiles at Jill Lindsey.

Jill Lindsey
370 Myrtle Ave., Fort Greene; +1-347-987-4538
A multi-hyphenate in the best sense of the word, Jill Lindsey opened last spring as part clothing store, part home goods shop, part cafe, part wine bar, and, soon, part bridal and flower shops. The eponymous owner shouldn't be able to curate each with such aplomb — no one should — but her knack for tracking down the best of the moment in independent design makes her shop endlessly pleasant to browse and almost impossible to leave without a new purchase in hand.

Home of the Brave
146 Franklin St., Greenpoint; +1-347-384-2776
The owners of renowned Greenpoint clothing store The Wolves Within spun off their sensibilities into a home goods pop-up last spring. The experiment was such a success that they opened a permanent space last fall, featuring a rotating inventory of ceramics, blankets, kitchen goods, and rugs that heavily favors Brooklyn designers and makers.

Simple, stylish pieces at Elma Blint.

Elma Blint
739 Fulton St., Fort Greene; no phone.
A longtime vendor at the Brooklyn Flea, Elma Blint gave her jewelry line a permanent brick-and-mortar spot inside Courtney Washington's clothing boutique in 2014. Her trademark pieces exude a subdued cool and work as everyday accessories. The space has enabled Blint to expand her custom design services — she now has a place to sit down with customers — which is good news for anyone looking for one-of-a-kind wedding or other special occasion jewelry.

Jordan Heads Brooklyn
302 Malcolm X Blvd., Bed-Stuy; +1-347-690-0235
For a time in the 1990s, there was no person more fascinating than Michael Jordan, a once-in-a-generation athlete who made non-fans of the game line up for tickets. His superstardom spawned an entire industry of paraphernalia, including the legendary Air Jordan sneakers, which today have become coveted collectors items around which the owners of this new boutique in Bed-Stuy have built their inventory. For anyone with even a passing interest in Jordan at his height, this shop is a must.

Northeast fare at Hunting with Jake.

Hunting with Jake
380 Atlantic Ave., Boerum Hill; +1-718-522-6075
Part of the influx of new home goods shops on Atlantic Avenue, this one mixes vintage and antiques sourced from around the Northeast, along with new items from a careful selection of indie designers and makers. Highlights include a collection of vintage plates, cutting boards from Gowanus Furniture Co., and leather pouches from Tracey Tanner, all with more palatable price tags than you'll find at other nearby shops.

Off-beat attire from Electric Nest.

Electric Nest
60 Broadway, Williamsburg; +1-347-227-7023
Opened as a showcase for owner Leana Zuniga's bohemian-inflected line Electric Feathers, this shop in the exploding South Williamsburg neighborhood also carries accessories and home goods from other designers chosen seemingly at Zuniga's whim, which gives the space the overall aesthetic of a very stylish girlfriend's envy-inducing apartment.

Fly footwear at Idol.

Idol
101 Metropolitan Ave., Williamsburg; +1-718-599-4365
The owners of this sleek, esoteric spot specialize in clothing and accessories for men that fuse influences from art, hip-hop, and fashion — a serious undertaking in which no expense is spared in pursuit of perfection. The shop is stocked with items that can only be called cult classics, often discontinued, often from labels that should be better known than they are.

Budin
114 Greenpoint Ave., Greenpoint; +1-347-844-9639
This coffee shop/design store hybrid made headlines when it opened last year selling $7 lattes. Now there's a $10 version, as well as lattes from less obscure roasters for $4.50. Still, it's the shop's collection of goods from independent Scandinavian designers that's worthy of more attention. Much of the inventory has never been seen outside of Europe, making the finds here feel like true discoveries.

2015-08-05-1438799573-5903211-BrooklynGreenpointGeneralStore.jpg

A diorama of local talent at Greenpoint General Store.

Greenpoint General Store
87 Oak St., Greenpoint; +1-718-218-7775
One stated goal of this new general store is quite specific: to help preserve the vibrant creative community in Greenpoint, even as gentrification and its attendant challenges come to the North Brooklyn neighborhood. To this end, the shop sells inventory sourced exclusively from local makers like DCP Ceramics, Psyche Jewelry, and PLANTbrooklyn.

The 5 Stages of Grieving Over a Celebrity Divorce

$

2015-08-04-1438722888-8805687-GwenStefaniGavinRossdale2005.jpg

We know that we shouldn't continue to be surprised about celebrity divorces, and most of the time, we're not. Take Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner, for example -- much as we (okay, Em: She's the Us Weekly reader of the two of us) enjoyed the sweet photos of their "date afternoons" drinking smoothies together or pushing their kids on the swings at the local park, that marriage seemed like a ticking time bomb, given Affleck's fondness for booze, gambling and other women. But Gwen Stefani and Gavin Rossdale? That separation hurts!

From the outside, at least, they seemed to have it all -- a true marriage of equals that still had passion and sweetness after all these years (and all those kids). We loved that Stefani still talked about how hot her husband was, decades into their relationship, and we loved that dry-witted Brit Rossdale joked about how to "have it all" in a marriage. As he said on The Howard Stern Show recently: "

[Reporters] say to me, 'You're doing this, you've got a new record...'How do you guys find time for each other?' And I said, 'We don't, that's why we've been together so long.' I was f--king around, that's funny to me. Where I'm from, that's funny. And it was funny, for about a week, and then it's like, 'oh...interesting.' So it's just me and my big mouth.

Passion, humor and a marriage of equals who professed massive respect for each other's work and hotness -- if they can't make it work, then who can? Next you'll be telling us the Obamas' marriage is on the rocks. (Please. No.)

So to help us all through this difficult time -- and any future difficult times to come -- we have prepared a guide to the five stages of grief when it comes to mourning a celebrity marriage.

1. Denial

This first stage of grief helps us to survive the loss.  Life makes no sense. We are in a state of shock and denial. We go numb. Denial helps us to pace our feelings of grief -- it is nature's way of letting in only as much grief as we can handle. Common thoughts in this stage:
1) The magazine must have got it wrong. I'm canceling my Twitter!
2) Maybe they just need some time apart to realize how much they miss each other.
3) Even if they divorce, it doesn't have to be over. Elizabeth Taylor remarried her ex!

2. Anger

Anger is a necessary stage of the healing process. Be willing to feel your anger, even though it may seem endless. The more you truly feel it, the more it will begin to dissipate and the more you will heal. Common thoughts in this stage:
1) Do you know how often I defended your marriage to the doubting masses? I even Tweeted about you!
2) Why would you tell Cosmopolitan magazine how in love you were just a few months ago? That made me fall more in love with your marriage, and you knew that would happen!
3) Oh, so NOW you want privacy, so you can heal? What about MY healing process, huh?!

3. Bargaining

This is when you will do anything if only the couple will spare you the grief of separating. Guilt is often bargaining's companion. The "if onlys" cause us to find fault in ourselves and what we think we could have done differently. We remain in the past, trying to negotiate our way out of the hurt. Common bargains attempted during this stage include:
1) I promise to never again read Star magazine or any other crappy publication that publishes nasty rumors about your marriage being on the rocks when it's not. I'll stick to Us Weekly! I promise!
2) I'll buy your new album instead of downloading it for free! I'll buy it twice, and I'll make all my friends buy it too!
3) If Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner got back together, would you consider a reconciliation then? What about if Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake decided to start over?

4. Depression

Empty feelings present themselves, and grief enters on a deeper level, deeper than we ever imagined. This depressive stage feels as though it will last forever, when a loss fully settles in your soul. Common thoughts during this stage include:
1) I'll never Tweet again.
2) What's the point in even watching TV?
3) If they can't make love work, then love is a fallacy and we should all give up trying.

5. Acceptance

Acceptance is often confused with the notion of being okay with what happened. This is not the case. You will probably never feel "okay" with this celebrity divorce. Instead, this stage is about accepting the reality that the celebrity marriage is over, and that this new reality is permanent. Common thoughts during this stage, as we learn to live with the divorce, include:
1) Perhaps their careers will now blossom separately. Heartbreak is good material, after all.
2) What celebrity marriage could possibly survive in the spotlight for that long?
3) At least we still have the Obamas. And the Bachelor/Bachelorette franchise.

Kendall Jenner And Nick Jonas Are Reportedly Dating

In the middle of a summer full of celebrity splits -- Gwen and Gavin, Ben and Jen, Blake and Miranda, and most tragically, Kermit and Miss Piggy -- comes reports of a blossoming young romance that could make us believe in love again.

Sources are whispering to Us Weekly that Gigi Hadid played matchmaker for Kendall Jenner and set her up with boyfriend Joe Jonas' younger brother Nick.  The magazine's sources have given us incredible insight into their burgeoning romance, explaining that they're getting to know each other via text, but it's not like they had to work on it because "they had a flirty chemistry from the start."

If we're being real though (and if the two are actually dating), we're not sure it's destined to be everlasting love since Nick just split from his girlfriend of two years, Olivia Culpo, in June. But, one of the magazine's insiders says, "He absolutely thinks she’s hot," and you know, that's important.

Don't expect to see the couple hitting the red carpet together just yet, though. "When they're ready and it turns official, we’ll start seeing photos," another source added.

The Huffington Post has reached out to reps for Jenner and Jonas, who have yet to respond at this time.

Disney Princesses With Realistic Hair And Makeup Are Super Relatable

Realistic waistlines, realistic faces: there are very few ways Disney princesses haven't been reimagined at this point.

None of these comforting images, however, hit as close to home as seeing what the princesses would look like if their hair and makeup were a little less perfect.

Buzzfeed shared these glorious makeunders back in April, and now a corresponding video gives us an even better look at what these dangerously flawless icons would really look like if they had actually just emerged from the ocean or flown through the air on a magic carpet.

One exception to the rule is Tiana, who the video explains would, in fact, look just as lovely on her wedding day in real life as she did in the movie.

The struggle is real, ladies. Check out the video above.

Forever Young: Why The Fashion Industry Is So Obsessed With Young Girls

$
0
0
Last month, 14-year old Israeli model Sofia Mechetner opened up for the Dior show. In what has been described as a "Cinderella story," Mechetner has traded her impoverished life in Tel Aviv for a $265,000 contract with Dior. The only troubling part of the story? Mechetner's young age. In 2012, all 21 international Vogues signed a pact pledging they would not use models under the age of 16. However, fashion's obsession with all things youthful -- including the use of underage girls to model expensive clothes intended for adult women -- could not be stopped, regardless of any signed pacts.

This is nothing new. Sofia Mechetner is just the latest in the ongoing fixation of youth within the fashion world. In the 1980s, a 15-year-old Brooke Shields proclaimed, "You want to know what comes between me and my Calvins? Nothing." Fast-forward to today, where the daughters of famous celebrities are now in the fashion spotlight, regardless of however young they may be. Lily-Rose Depp, the 16-year-old daughter of Johnny Depp and Vanessa Paradis, is the face of Chanel's eyewear campaign. And Cindy Crawford's daughter Kaia Gerber -- who has been signed to IMG Models -- was recently in a photoshoot for Vogue Italia and had a photo spread in the September issue of CR Fashion Book, Carine Roitfeld's magazine. Oh yeah, and she's 13. These two young girls showcase the frenzied need from the fashion industry for younger faces. Their newly found spotlight has the possibility to replace their famous model mothers who, perhaps precisely because of their mature ages, could be considered irrelevant, as now there is a much younger look-alike to take over the throne.

There is something distinctly unsettling about watching a pubescent girl stalk down the runway, styled to look beyond her years and wearing expensive clothing intended for adult women. Sofia Mechetner's young age, with her height of an adult and body of a child, serve to distort reality and expectations of what a woman's body looks like. These young models who have yet to enter puberty -- lacking hips and a chest -- puts pressure on other, older, models to achieve and maintain a stick-thin physique. It also sends out a strong message to the American public at large. The models are meant to be desirable -- beautiful, sophisticated, more elegant and cool than you could ever possibly be -- and the everyday woman is encouraged to imitate that body type, to uphold it as a beauty ideal.

For young girls styled into models, the demands of working in the fashion industry can be confusing and incredibly uncomfortable. Young girls are subjected to endless judgments and critiques over their bodies, as casting agents and designers -- and eventually the model in question -- reduce a model's worth to her measurements. Young models also have to deal with being presented and viewed as sexual objects; a difficult concept to understand, let alone handle.

The employment of young girls in the fashion world is indicative of a broader cultural belief and fascination: to look good, you must look young. Advertisements on television, billboards, and magazines bombard us daily with messages solidifying that getting older is something to avoid and dread. For women specifically, there is an expectation to cling to younger years and do everything possibly to look younger. It's no surprise that plastic surgery and anti-aging products are multi-dollar industries in the United States, especially because of the perception that only young women are desirable or deserve attention. Just look at the women in the media -- from actors to talk show hosts to models -- and you will find young women almost exclusively on show. A woman over 35? Sorry -- she's expired.

As younger models appear on catwalks and magazine spreads, one must wonder: Is it really such a crazy idea for an older women -- as opposed to a pubescent minor -- to model products intended for an older woman? Considering that older women -- including Joni Mitchell and Joan Didion -- modeled in campaigns earlier this year, one might dare interpret this as a sliver of hope. I mean, Dolce & Gabbana even featured three grandmothers in their spring 2015 ads! Come on! However, given fashion's track history, the answer to such a question is already very apparent: Don't count on it.

Giselle Blew a Wonderful Opportunity!

$
0
0
Supermodel Giselle Bundchen made headlines recently not because she was named spokesperson for a new clothing line, or because of her husband Tom Brady's recent football cheating scandal, but because she had a little work done! Numerous reports indicate that she got breast implants, and eyelid surgery. Big deal, cosmetic surgery in her native Brazil is more common than getting a manicure.

The rub came from her previous comments expressing the fact that she would never undergo cosmetic surgery, because she prefers to be natural, relying on yoga, diet and a healthy lifestyle.

Not only did she have the surgery in Paris, she chose a Burqa as a disguise, not exactly politically correct! I understand why she had the operation, because in my plastic surgery practice, I see moms every day who want to regain their pre-pregnancy figures. It is understandable, and accepted in our youth oriented society. What bothers me is that Giselle tried to blatantly hide it.

I have been preaching in this venue for years that our society wrongly puts too much pressure on women to look younger and prettier, placing emphasis on looks, rather than intelligence and substance!

The media reinforces this notion, regularly trotting out young, beautiful fashion models and movie stars for us all to gawk, admire and even post as role models! The problem is, for the most part, they have had a lot of help! Besides Photoshop, they are primped and preened by the most talented makeup and hair stylists around. Then, bring on the plastic surgeons and cosmetic dermatologists, to tweak their "perfection" further with Botox, fillers and plastic surgery. Again, I have no problem with that, remember what I do for a living! Just be honest with us and admit that you have had some help! Otherwise, how do the women in our society compete, or God forbid, try to emulate these "beauties"? They don't have a chance to keep up, as most don't have access to the same beauty arsenal as these "role models"! Most women have a job, family and important daily responsibilities, there is no contest.

I admire actress Patricia Heaton, well known as the adorable, dynamic wife Debra Barone from the TV show Everybody Loves Raymond. After giving birth to four kids, she bravely admitted that she had a "Mommy Makeover," a tummy tuck and breast lift. No big deal!

Giselle, what a heroine you could have been? Arguably, the most successful and admired Supermodel ever, coming out of her Burqa, and screaming to the world, "I am not perfect and even my body changed after having two babies and I am getting older, and that's OK!" How refreshing and honest it could have been, as opposed to what it became!

I am the biggest proponent of diet and exercise, and regularly extol their virtues, but please Giselle, don't give false hopes to us all by having a little nip and tuck, and then give the credit to genetics, yoga and your skin care line for your lasting beauty at the ripe old age of 35!

Why can't we choose better role models? Why not admire and emulate people like your kid's school teacher, or your brilliant neighbor who runs her family and has a great job? Can't we select role models that matter and are worth respecting? Move over Giselle, make way for people we should admire!

Setting an example is not the main means of influencing others; it is the only means.

Solange Shines Light On 15 Women For Her "Word To The Woman" Puma Collaboration

2015-08-04-1438723934-6302476-Kicks.jpg

Before this shoot, I was in the middle of a two week whirlwind mixed with life, work and creative projects. I had a massive meeting in Amsterdam at G-Star headquarters then bounced around Europe. I briefly came back to New York, went away again, then returned to New York one day before this shoot.

I was counting down the days to the "Word to the Woman" shoot filled with excitement. I got to work super early that morning, partially because of excitement and partially because I knew I had to leave a bit early to make it to the shoot...I guess I am telling on myself at this point, but I completed everything I needed to at the office before I hopped in an Uber. Sitting silently in the backseat I was grateful it was just 7 minute zip from where I was.

We shot in a quaint two bedroom, cozy apartment, the way I like homes to feel. As I entered the room I greeted the team, DJ Lindsey (one of the featured women) and Solange before I headed into the wardrobe room.

I opened the door to the warmest welcome and one of the most beautiful smiles by Lizzy Okpo, who styled the shoot and put all my butterflies at ease. After checking out my outfit option I headed to hair and make-up, nestled in a little boys room full of toys. Apart of me wanted to dig through them like I was 5 but I sat down and started to get pretty! I am an adult after all.

2015-08-05-1438804812-9104348-Kittylayingdown.jpg

I turned around and literally choked on my words. Neal Ferinah was doing my hair, I haven't seen him in about 15 years and he has known me before I was even born (when I was still in my mother's womb if we want to get exact). It was one of those moments when you know your stars are aligned and you are where you are supposed to be. What are the odds!

While he was adding some life to my fro, my teal and salmon nails were asked to be covered in white which I decided needs to be my new go to color, it popped beautifully against my skin.
2015-08-04-1438726724-362256-tumblr_nsdd4iBXF61uczg7ro1_r1_1280.jpg

Everyone was moving fast and I was almost ready. I was most excited about my eye makeup because that is the one department where I literally can't do more then a black line. My eye makeup was bold and vibrant; beautiful tones of green and blues with a touch white to close the deal.

2015-08-05-1438804616-2421254-KittyLosstbunny.jpg

I quickly slipped into my nude ensemble, a color I don't often wear because of my pale complexion but the two -piece was to die for, and Lizzy's taste is impeccable.

My outfit was paired with the mono toned yellow suede Puma that I had already planned a few outfits around. I was a bit shy, nervous, anxious, and excited at the same time. The photographer, J. Quazi King was ready and so was I. The wall was white, the couch was concealed with a white throw, and the floors were wooden. I was briefed on the mood and took direction from Solange, you know a regular Wednesday afternoon!

She was so graceful as she showed me how to move and I realized I wasn't quite there yet... as I chuckled to myself. I tried to give a "fierce mean face" which somehow turned into a big teeth bearing smile, I think I was just too happy to even think an angry thought. It looks a lot easier than it is! Trust mii daddy **Skepta voice**.

I really loved the details of the books wrapped in salmon colored newspaper to boost the palette of the shot. It was minimal, soft, fresh, and innocent...a part of me that somehow was captured through every detail of my carefully curated environment.

2015-08-04-1438722005-4240358-CacheeLivingston422.jpg

Once we got the shot, I headed back to the wardrobe room for the video segment post rolling around on the couch. It all kind of made sense in that moment. I realized what the campaign was all about. The empowerment of women through a series of various visual stories that all lead to a road of greatness.

I have always admired women who had a voice, power, or wisdom who were not afraid to share it. Women who may see the light in another woman and pushes her to shine brighter. Women who dare to be themselves, take risks, be vulnerable, and love on purpose. These women are somewhat rare, because it takes a very particular type of woman to do this. This woman is selfless, loving, strong, willing, and able all balled into one. Somehow Solange was able to delve into a sea of women and handpick a few that to her innovate and redfine roles from varied walks of life.

In that moment, I stepped outside of my 9-5, my love for music, and my never-ending hustle to be embrace that special moment and be happy. I was beyond honored to be hand selected by Solange alongside such powerful and inspiring women. Here are some of the other women featured:

Hot Spot

Continuing our printed trend, The Underwear Expert recently highlighted polka dot underwear. Not just for kids anymore, polka dot underwear can be reminiscent of childhood, but more than that, it provides the wearer with a youthful look, style, and attitude.

The history of the polka dot originated in its simplicity - the dots were small and close together. But now, polka dots have branched out into all different sizes, shapes, and colors - and not just on regular clothing, but obviously on underwear, too.

We highlighted seven different pairs of underwear in our most recent polka-dot-themed underwear shoot. Some pairs are entirely fun, while others are - dare we say it? - very professional.

The aussieBum Spot Range has an "old school" take on polka dots this season. The underwear has a white body with black polka dots, for a 1950s-ish look.

The Happy Socks Big Bot Boxer has a more bubbly, and brightly-colored polka dot look in their underwear line. Overall, the look is very contemporary, for the more modern man who wants to update his underwear drawer, or just simply keep it looking fresh.

Croota and Levi's have a more minimalist approach to polka dotted underwear. Croota's Sprinkles 02 Boxer Brief has alternating dot colors, while Levi's has a fun red star print (yes - stars can count as dots in this case).

The Canadian brand, JM, uses metallics to show off their polka dotted underwear. The print is minimal, but it still shows off your greatest assets with that bit of flash.

What kind of polka dots do you prefer in your underwear - big, bright ones, small, conservative ones, or ones with a bit of flash? Let us know!

When It Comes To Fitness Trackers, Pretty Is In

$

What once served the sole purpose of tracking steps is now a fashion statement. Yep, the fashionable fitness tracker is on the rise, and for good reason: ugly ones fall by the wayside.

A survey showed 50 percent of users lose interest in their wearables and cite aesthetics as one of the top reasons for returning them. The strategy consulting firm Endeavor Partners, which works in the field of digital devices, came up with these numbers after surveying 6,223 U.S. adults, Tech Republic reports. Dan Ledger, principal at Endeavor Partners, pointed to Metawatch CEO Bill Geiser's theory about attractive wearables as a good example.

"Bill's whole thesis is that you can have the greatest product in the world but if it doesn't have the right design aesthetic, no one is going to wear it more than a week," Ledger said.

He has a point. As Jennifer Jolly wrote in a New York Times Well blog post, "I have tried the vast majority of current activity tracking gadgets and have eventually abandoned most of them. That’s not to say they didn’t perform their duty. The problem was that they didn’t match my outfit."

The new focus on fashion should come as no surprise: all the way back in January, Wired declared 2015 the "year wearables will stop being so ugly."

“When the first activity trackers started coming out, that sporty look was what people wanted. Now we’re moving away from that,” Garmin media relations associate Amy Noury told Wired.

Want a little guidance when it comes to good-looking wearables? Here are some options.

Misfit Swarvoski Shine,  $249

The Swarvoski Shine comes with a pendant, chain and sport band and tracks sleep quality, daily activity and syncs with smartphones.

Bellabeat Leaf, $119

The Bellabeat Leaf bills itself as the "world's smartest piece of jewelry." It tracks sleep, breathing, stress, physical activity and ovulation cycles. It can be worn as a necklace, clip or bracelet.

Tory Burch for FitBit, $175

The Tory Burch FitBit collaboration is pretty perfect for the fashion-forward. "Transform your tracker into a super-chic accessory for work or weekend, day or evening," the product description reads. Combined with the powers of the FitBit, how can you turn that one down

Of course, for some people, looks are the last thing on their mind when it comes to tracking their walks, runs and sleep. But it's certainly good to know that there are options for the fashion-minded people out there.

Canceling '19 Kids And Counting' Cost Discovery $19 Million

TLC took its sweet time before they decided to cancel "19 Kids and Counting" when Josh Duggar apologized following reports that, as a teenager, he allegedly molested five underage girls, including some of his sisters.

Duggar's confession came in May, but the network didn't officially cancel the reality series until July. As the network's highest-rated show, no doubt finances were a concern. The Wrap reports that TLC's parent company, Discovery Communications, lost about $19 million when they said goodbye to the Duggar family.

During a post-earnings conference call on Wednesday, the company's Chief Financial Officer Andrew Warren revealed Discovery had lost a total of $24 million during the second quarter, listing "higher restructuring and other charges this year of $19 million, primarily due to content impairment charges of canceling TLC’s '19 Kids and Counting,'" as the reason.

Still, TLC hasn't completely cut ties with the Duggars. At the same time that it  announced the series' cancelation, it also revealed their new partnership with child-protection organizations, Darkness to Light and RAINN (Rape, Abuse and Incest National Network), as part of a new campaign to raise awareness about child sexual abuse.

"TLC will work closely with both groups and with the Duggar family on a one-hour documentary that will include Jill and Jessa and other survivors and families that have been affected by abuse," the network said in its statement.

One Classic Dish, Five Ways

$

Whether you're planning a wedding reception, bridal shower or backyard event, classic white dishware can be an instrumental piece to creating your beautiful tabletop. Its friendly-to-look-at, amorphous character makes it suitable to be used in a variety of ways. We were able to develop five distinct styles with white dishware as the centerpiece, classified below as rustic, vintage, traditional, modern and storybook.

We teamed up with celebrity florist, Mark Held, and vintage rental wonder, Laura Meyers, to bring this project to life. Seek inspiration from some of our favorite industry pros, and voila: You'll have a tabletop detailed to perfection!

Rustic
2015-08-05-1438808083-5093203-Rustic_012.jpg

To pull off the rustic vibe with cachet, we paired classic blue glass with white china and complemented them with robust fruit and flowers. The wooden flatware added a layer of casualness, instilled the overall design with an outdoors, orchard-inspired feel. So simple and timeless!
2015-08-05-1438808214-3965034-Rustic_007.jpg

The team at Mark's Garden played with colorful florals and varieties of garden roses, citrus, strawberries and viburnum. By way of jaunty, vibrant colors, the end effect was flashy but also had a serene and complete feel to it.

Vintage
2015-08-05-1438808279-8796882-Vintage_002.jpg

With the vintage look, the objective was to create something simply irresistible that took the party back in time. We went retro by using Nemadji pottery, which served as the perfect backdrop to Love Detailed's copper mugs and plastic glassware.
2015-08-05-1438808320-5421617-Vintage_004.jpg

Colorful glass and vintage fabrics were the main elements used to develop the vintage look in floral. Alluring but muted tones of lavender, pink and ivory created what seemed to be French Impressionist's painter's pallet on this table.

Traditional
2015-08-05-1438808385-7042440-Traditional_005.jpg

A classic look that no wedding lover will ever be disappointed with! We appreciated this theme for its understated formality, and chose to use gentle, soft colors rather than loud ones. We combined the white landscape with gorgeous La Tavola linen, then added Dish Wish marble candlesticks, iridescent stemware and Love Detailed milk glasses. By using silver flatware and gold-rimmed plates, we doubled down on the design's lush elegance.
2015-08-05-1438808412-8287231-Traditional_008.jpg

When going for the traditional look, there's a whole array of reliable options that have delighted wedding guests for decades. We referred to some of them here, going with white lilac, ranunculus, tulips -- imbuing the table with elegant hues of white all the more.

Modern
2015-08-05-1438808446-280604-Modern_007.jpg

The modern look required a methodical use of color and ornaments. The pivotal decision was the inclusion of the Lucite Love Detailed napkin rings, which we accented with bold, contemporary metal. We created a sensational concoction between Love Detailed's copper votives, Dish Wish's brass candlesticks and flatware, and Mark Garden's gold vessels.
2015-08-05-1438808512-9091486-Modern_013.jpg

Candlesticks and architectural containers in varied shades of gold made for the perfect balance to the dark dishware. For florals, we rocked an amalgamation of white, soft blush, marsala -- Patatone's color of the year -- and touches of black to highlight the essential use of black in this modern theme.

Storybook
2015-08-05-1438808542-7634825-Storybook_005.jpg

In this design we created a surreal visage, fusing elements of white, navy and gold, and even a shade of jadeite. We fell in love with the blue sequin here, both for its texture and its sparkle against the gold flatware and dish rims. The marble chargers from BBJ Linen made for a jaw-dropping juxtaposition to the flashy tablecloth and mercury glass vessels. Lastly, we tied it together with organic blackberries.
2015-08-05-1438808567-5725614-Storybook_009.jpg

Dreamy elements served as a source of inspiration for the Storybook look. We used several whimsical and ethereal flowers, like immature hydrangea, anemones, ranunculus, brunia berries and helleborus. Planted atop navy linen sequin by La Tavola, Mark's Garden left its acclaimed insignia on this design.

This Kylie Jenner Makeup Tutorial Will Completely Transform You

$

If you're one of the 31 million people who follows Kylie Jenner on Instagram, you know the girl has her hair and beauty game on lock. Her face is always contoured within an inch of her life and she never has a strand of hair out of place. If this soon-to-be 18-year-old can do it (or rather, if her hair and makeup team can do it), how hard can it be?

We set out on a mission to find out. We tasked celebrity hair stylist Rachelle Hawkins and HuffPost Live makeup artist Kari Bauce to give one of our editors a Kylie Jenner makeover. 90 minutes later (yes, 90 minutes), the makeover was complete.

In terms of the hair, Hawkins prepped the roots with mousse, blew them dry and created soft waves using a straightener, alternating the direction of the waves to give body. She kept the ends straight, created a center part and added a little texturizing spray.

To find out exactly how Bauce created the makeup look, check out the step-by-step instructions below and scroll all the way to the bottom to see the before and after photos.

1. Start by applying a light, oil-free moisturizer on your face. Don't use anything too heavy because it will eat away at your foundation. (Try Aveda 'Tourmaline Charged' Hydrating Creme)

2. Put a light primer on your eyelids so that your eye shadow will stay on -- shimmery, light eye shadow tends to dissipate over time. (Try Urban Decay Cosmetics Original Eye Shadow Primer Potion)

3. Next, layer face powder on top of your eye primer, adding neutral contour to the outer corner of your eye to give it a little definition. (Try Bare Escentuals bareMinerals Mineral Veil

4. Cover your face with foundation. (Try Make Up For Ever Liquid Lift Foundation

5. Add concealer on the bridge of your nose, under your eyes, and basically anywhere you want the light to catch. Since you are layering so much makeup, don't use anything too creamy -- something that is harder in consistency is better. (Try Laura Mercier Secret Camouflage)

6. Put banana powder (which has a yellow tint and acts like highlighter) on any area where you want the light to reflect, like under your eyes and on your cheekbones. Let the powder sit for about 10 minutes. Remove the powder using a damp sponge. (Try Ben Nye Banana Powder)

7. Continuously layer more contouring around your temples, cheekbones and jaw line.

8. Take a brow pencil and reinforce your brows by filling in any areas that are sparse. (Try Anastasia Beverly Hills Perfect Brow Pencil

9. To further define your brows, put a little bit of concealer right under your brow bone.

10. Add a light, shimmery eyeshadow to your lids. (Try Stila 'In The Light' Natural Eyeshadow Palette)

11. Add blush on your cheekbones, but don't bring it too far down on your face -- it should only be on the temples and about halfway down your cheek. (Try Mac Powder Blush in Buff)

12. A major Kardashian trick is to put a stripe of luminizer down your nose, which not only helps to contour but also gives a nice glow. (Try It Cosmetics Hello Light Anti-Aging Crème Illuminizer)

13. Curl your eyelashes and add mascara. (Try L'Oreal Paris Voluminous Miss Manga Mascara)

14. Apply a pair of fake lashes. (Try Sephora Collection Luxe False Lash)

15. Smudge in some dark brown eyeliner around the lash line. (Try Butter London Wink  Eye Pencil Brown Sugar)

16. Pull a bit of mascara through the fake lashes to better blend your lashes with the fake ones.

17. If your lips have a lot of pigment, cover them with concealer before you apply lip liner.

18. Mix your lip liner (which should be flesh tone) with Aquaphor so your lips don't look too dry. Over line your lips and if you have a cupid's bow, cover it up. (Kylie uses Mac Lip Pencil in Whirl, but here we used Mac Lip Pencil in Spice.) Voila! You are now a dead ringer for Kylie Jenner.
