Britney Spears Is Living 'The Mermaid Life' In Latest Instagram Photo

Britney Spears already has magical mermaid hair, but now she has a tail to match.

The singer shared a photo on Instagram of herself dressed in a shimmering mermaid's tail while hanging poolside with her adorable sons. The performer paired her blue tail with a striped blue-and-white bikini top, and her pastel blue locks are seen cascading over her shoulders.

The mother of two captioned the pic "The mermaid life."

Brit is just the latest celebrity to try a tail on for size. Kim and Kourtney Kardashian recently shared photos of their little ones, North West and Penelope Disick, donning similar mermaid outfits while on vacation in St. Barts.

The magic of mermaids transcends age.

Lots of Beautiful Hair at Teen Choice, Some With Splash of Color

$

Teen Choice delivered! Rita Ora added a light breeze of pink to her signature platinum blonde tresses and Britney Spears, honored as a style icon, splashed her ends with blue and purple to create what might even be described as an ombre.

All the stars collecting awards in Los Angeles for best movies, acting and music were, of course, beautiful. Most of them stuck with recent trends of natural looking cuts and colors with subtle, soft color transitions. We didn't really see any big departures from what's been popular.

Winning an award as a TV comedy actress, "Glee" star Lea Michele stayed with her long layers and caramel highlights. What can you say? It works!

Teen Choice for best TV drama went to the cast of "Pretty Little Liars." Accepting the award were cast stars including Lucy Hale, who does a lot of long brown layered wavy hair, recently went short with a bob, but then had extensions to do a long ponytail in a cool, slick-back look to accept her award with other cast members. Also going with a center part and slick-back look from the "Pretty Little Liars" cast were Janel Parrish and Shay Mitchell.

Actress and singer Zendaya (star of Disney's "Undercover KC") went with a ballerina bun high on top to walk the Teen Choice blue carpet. She changes the style of her dark, brown hair often, and the results are nearly always fantastic.

So, no new trends emerged but we saw lots of beautiful hair. Love those kids! Love change!

'Man Buns Of Disneyland' Is The Happiest Place On Instagram

Mickey's got competition.

The @manbunsofdisneyland Instagram account is definitely worth a follow... and then some. It's one continuous, swoon-worthy feed of men who sport all kinds of buns at Disney parks nationwide.

Man Buns of Disneyland is not dissimilar to #ManBunsOfMontauk, the hashtag that highlights hairstyles in one of New York state's famous summer getaways. Both are proof that for better or for worse, man buns are taking over the planet, one destination at a time. Take a look at some of our favorite shots below.

Oh look! A man bun near the park entrance!

But HOW is that bun gonna stay intact on Mickey's spinning Fun Wheel?!

Fashion Designer-Entrepreneur: Sarah Gercke

2015-08-21-1440143984-1376790-STSUNSET.JPG

When you first meet Sarah Gercke it is a bit like what I imagine a lightening strike to be...she is energetic in a flash of golden hair that evokes a 70's, all natural, goddess kind of thing. Sarah is engaging and rapidly shares her thoughts with a buzz of creativity pulsing from her so infectious that whatever she is doing you feel immediately onboard. Sarah has the presence of a leader and it is that power she has harnessed to make several impressive achievements in a relatively short career. She opened a multi brand fashion boutique in Aspen back in 2005 which transformed over the years into her own fashion line. She designs for a gutsy, life loving woman who also embraces her soft side. Gray Aspen was first introduced in the fall of 2008 with an immediate following from the luxury loving jet set that Sarah has cultivated over years of being with the customer. Her designs are classic with a sense of artistic flare. You can also feel the influence of her outdoorsy, equestrian upbringing even in her sexiest dresses. The collection draws strength in her jacket offerings that remain fresh and season-less. She is also a doting mother who balances her hectic, creative schedule (design, production, sales, vision) with quality time centered around the always adorable Townsend or "Townie" as he is referred to in these early years. It has been far too long since I have seen Sarah and wanted to catch up to see what journey she is pioneering now...

EP-Sarah!! For those who have not read your bio; give us a quick run down of what brought you to where you are...

SG-Well first and foremost, I need to say thank you for such a kind introduction.... wow! I grew up in Charlottesville, Virginia riding horses and playing sports. I went on to attend the University of Virginia, where I played lacrosse and majored in Classics (with a specialization in Latin..... yes, Latin.... :). One of my best friends and I decided to move to Aspen, Colorado on a whim and off we went. After a couple years working in an art gallery, I decided to open my own store, The Gallerie Aspen. Fashion has always been a part of me. I have loved it since I was little and I was always putting outfits together, dreaming up designs in my head and constantly reading fashion magazines. Although, I had never pursued it professionally...so, I finally did. The Gallerie grew into an awesome store carrying the likes of Lela Rose, Derek Lam, Alexander Wang and Ports 1961. I still had this urge to create some of the designs that were always in my head, and thus Gray Aspen was born.

2015-08-21-1440144084-2258539-GRAYJACKET.JPG

EP-What are some of the lessons you have learned by opening your own store and subsequently your own brand?

SG-A LOT of lessons have been learned. One: there will be many ups and downs. Learning to roll with those; learning to adjust and change is probably the most important. My dad told me when I first opened, that the ability to change in business is what would help lead me to success. Two: you better love what you do when you open your own business.... because you will be living and breathing it.

EP-Tell the truth, are you ever exhausted and what pulls you through those moments?

SG-Absolutely! Oh my gosh. There have been many times I have wondered "What on Earth am I doing?!" and then I remember that I am doing and living my dream. Learning to breathe, being present and taking one small step at a time when I am feeling overwhelmed helps.... oh, and wine. ha!

EP-I know you are a runner; what does this routine do for you beyond the physical? How does this feed your soul and in turn influence your work?

SG-Honestly, some of my best designs come into my head when I run. Running helps center me and clear my mind. When my mind is cleared of all the chaos from the day; then I have space to create.

2015-08-21-1440144140-8219230-WAISTDETAIL.JPG

EP-You have an incredible network; can you explain how you cultivated it?

SG-Relationships have always been one of the most important things in my life. I really care about people.... my family, friends, and my clients. I feel so blessed for how many amazing people I have met from shopping with me. When you really care about something, you naturally cultivate it. So, I care about my network of clients.... how they are as people.

EP-Who are these "Gray Aspen" women?

SG-The Gray Aspen woman is a sophisticated but playful woman. One who cares about fashion; about the fabrics, about the fit... a woman who wants special pieces that she will covet. I will tell you that many of my clients are very educated, well traveled, very interesting women who are off doing amazing things in this world.

EP-Why was it important for you to produce in New York City?

SG-I am just an all American girl! I like keeping things close. I love giving business to the Fashion District in NYC.... it is obviously more expensive than overseas, but to me it is worth it. Plus, I love visiting NYC and checking in with them when I need to.

EP-What are some of the goals you set for yourself with Gray Aspen?

SG-When I launched Gray, I literally had 2 styles. Those 2 styles grew into an average of around 15 pieces per season. I want to continue to grow Gray but not compromise the quality of my product or over saturate the market; keep it special. I know who my customer is but I always want to try and push the boundaries a little with some different styles every season. I keep testing the waters.

EP-How do you envision the course with Gray Aspen to continue?

SG-Currently, I am expanding my clientele and pushing the label more. I see wholesale of the collection to some of my favorite boutiques is on the horizon....

EP-What are your favorite pieces to create and which ones do you own?

SG- Fortunately, I am the sample size, so if you look in my closet....
my favorite pieces are probably jackets and vests. I love my Loudon blazer; it is my tailored blazer.... very equestrian and longer in the back. I would wear a vest every single day if I could, so naturally I am always coming up with new ones.

EP- If you could say something about what Gray Aspen means to you other than beautiful fashion?

SG-It is my heart and soul. This has most definitely not always been the easy path, but I just breathe it. I remember designs that I had when I was in high school. It has always been in me, Gray just did not become a tangible product until the launching of the actual collection. Gray Aspen will always be just who I am.

EP-Any tips for ambitious creatives who want to do what you have done?

SG-Keep your head down and work, work, work. Follow your dreams but make sure you have your bases covered both on the creative and the business side. There will be so many rewarding times and there will be so many difficult times. Don't give up! Find what it takes to get you through the tough times and do not ever let success go to your head...always keep your feet on the ground.

EP-Lastly, why do you do this? What drives you?

SG-I cannot even explain it. There is some crazy fashion vibe inside of me! I just really love what I do.

Product Review: Lipstick Colors and Swatches

$

I recently came across a few lipsticks from a company called Kismet Cosmetics. Many of you probably have not heard of this brand. I hadn't either until very recently. Kismet is a boutique cosmetics brand that is based out of Louisiana and was created by a local makeup artist in the area.

I tried three of the semi-matte lipsticks from their Velvet Collection: Crushed Coral (a mix of pink and orange tones), Burnout (a classic red) and Vivianna (a rich plum). I also tried out their new Succulent Collection that just recently became available. The Succulent Collection is Kismet's 2015 Fall/Winter collection of liquid lipsticks. The collection has four shades: Elope (a nude), Flamingo (a vibrant pink "statement color"), Speakeasy (a classic red) and On Point (a pink with orchid and nude undertones).

When trying these lipsticks, I based my review of them on four points:

1) Color Intensity: Does the lipstick color transfer on my lips just as it looks in the tube?

2) Moisture: Does this lipstick hydrate my lips or leave them looking and feeling dry and cracked?

3) Resilience: How often will I need to touch up this lipstick? Is it long lasting?

4) Pliability and Wear: Does this product spread comfortably onto my lips without being so creamy that it bleeds through the lip line?

Without any further ado, here is my experience with each of the lipsticks I tried.

Velvet Collection of semi-matte lipsticks:

Crushed Coral: The name of this lipstick describes it perfectly. It is an orangey color that is very popular right now. Crushed Coral is a perfect blend between orange and pink that looks amazing in the summer months. I think this lipstick would complement any boho chic look perfectly!

The color transferred from the tube almost identically, which is always refreshing to see in a lipstick. It was creamy and glided nicely onto my lips. Since this color is on the lighter side it was not very noticeable when it began to fade. I only needed to touch it up once during the day. I highly recommend this for anyone that loves the summer beachy look.

2015-08-05-1438737452-3505785-CrushedCoral2.jpg

Crushed Coral

Burnout: I am a sucker for a good red lipstick. The color transferred onto my lips exactly how it was presented in the tube. It went on smoothly and felt nice on my lips. The non-drying formula allowed the lipstick to glide nicely on my skin.

With that being said, there are a lot of red lipsticks out there and everyone looks for the red the suits them best. I think this color would look best on someone with a bit of a lighter skin tone than mine. Against my skin it looked a little on the pinkish red side rather than the deep red I usually go for. I used Kismet's liquid lipstick "Speakeasy" over top of this to darken it up a bit and it brought me to the desired deepness of a blue red that I love! Overall I think this is a great color. The color payoff is amazing and I only needed to touch up twice throughout the day.

2015-08-05-1438737813-6606866-Burnout2.jpg

Burnout

Vivianna: This lipstick surprised me. Looking at the color in the tube I thought it would be my least favorite of the semi-mattes. Turns out, it ended up being my favorite! In the tube it looked like it would be dryer than the other lipsticks and that it would transfer as a flat purple on my lips. Boy, was I wrong. This lipstick went on just as smoothly as the other two. The difference however was the other lipsticks seemed to remain true to their color in the tube when applied to the lips. Thankfully, in this case, the color transferred differently than what I was looking at in the tube. Once applied, it was a deep purplish pink color with hints of burgundy. It is the best deep berry color I have come across on the market. I will be using this on a regular basis (wearing it now actually!). I had to touch this lipstick up twice during the day and it was only after eating meals. It doesn't seem to fade very much on its own without something physically pulling it off. Love, love, love this color!

Overall Comments: These lipsticks are vibrant, long lasting and extremely hydrating. I tried 3 of the 10 semi-matte colors that are currently part of the Velvet Collection and if the other 7 lipsticks hold up to the same standards I would highly recommend giving them a try.

The Succulent Collection:

Elope: This color is a mix of brown and pink. It offers nude look for those that still like to use lipstick but aren't all about the flare. I think this color would go great on people with fair and medium skin tones. The darker your skin is the less I think this color would work for you.

I noticed on me that the color was just a little to close to my normal skin tone to look natural. For someone like me with darker skin I would suggest using this color to help tone down brighter lipsticks. I used this with one of my hot pick lipsticks and I loved the results. The texture is creamy and the color on the lip is true to the color in the tube. The lipstick had long lasting staying power and did not need much touching up.

2015-08-05-1438738648-6482201-Elope3.jpg

Elope

Flamingo: As advertised, this is truly a statement color! All you girls that love bold pops of color should look into this lipstick. If hot pink, baby pink and fuchsia had a baby I am pretty sure Flamingo would be born. The staying power of this lipstick is intense. I had to rub off the color with a cloth to fully remove it at the end of the day. The creamy formula keeps your lips looking hydrated and does not bleed through your lip line.

2015-08-05-1438738764-9892273-Flamingo2.jpg

Flamingo

Speakeasy: As I mentioned earlier in the article, I used this liquid lipstick to help darken up the look of the Burnout semi-matte lipstick. I like this color both on its own or mixed with another lipstick to help darken it up. It is a true classic red in my mind, and has the deepness I look for in my red tones. The creaminess is consistent with the other lipsticks as well as its long wear formula. This is a highly pigmented lipstick so be very careful not to color outside the lines!

2015-08-05-1438738838-6696550-Speakeasy1.jpg

Speakeasy

On Point: This is my FAVORITE of the liquid lipsticks. It is the perfect Fall pink. The nude undertones of this color make it great for the season. The brightness of the pink however, makes it a wonderful all year around color as well. I highly recommend this lipstick. It is hydrating, long lasting and classically pretty. I think this color would look good on any skin tone across the board. It is truly on point!

On Point

Color swatches left to right: Elope, Flamingo, Speakeasy, On Point

2015-08-05-1438739134-2162408-IMG_1534.jpg

Overall Comments: Liquid-style lipsticks are in high demand and offer a look that is turned up a few notches. I think these are great for anyone who doesn't prefer the classical application of lipstick and is looking for something that keeps up with the trends of the season.

I have to say I was overall pretty impressed with the products I tried. It shows that you don't need to rely on the big brands to deliver a quality product. I hope this encourages more boutique brands to start popping up and providing us with more great options to choose from.

This Caitlyn Jenner Halloween Costume Is The Worst Idea We've Heard All Year

$

Halloween is still two months away, but there's already a horribly offensive new costume looming on the horizon.

The retailer Spirit Halloween plans to sell a Caitlyn Jenner costume at its pop-up stores in New York City this year, according to the New York Daily News.

“Caitlyn Jenner has proven to be the most important real-life superhero of the year, and Spirit Halloween is proud to carry the costume that celebrates her," Trisha Lombardo, the company’s head of PR and marketing, told the Daily News. She offered no further details about the item, which will go on sale within the next four to six weeks.

Lombardo rejected the notion that the costume was problematic in an email to The Huffington Post. "At Spirit Halloween, we create a wide range of costumes that are often based upon celebrities, public figures, heroes and superheroes. We feel that Caitlyn Jenner is all of the above and that she should be celebrated. The Caitlyn Jenner costume reflects just that," she wrote.

Still, Vincent Villano of the National Center for Transgender Equality expressed his concerns.

"There's no tasteful way to 'celebrate' Caitlyn Jenner or respect transgender people this way on the one night of the year when people use their most twisted imaginations to pretend to be villains and monsters," he said in a statement to HuffPost on Friday.

We couldn't agree more.

This story has been updated to include an additional statement from Trisha Lombardo.

Supermodel Miranda Kerr launched KORA, an organic skincare line, after failing to find appealing products on the existing market. Here, the Australian beauty talks beauty as part of a holistic and healthy lifestyle.

Describe your look:
Classic, but free-spirited.

Five-minute routine:
Cleanse, mist, and moisturize

Never leave the house without:
KORA Organics Vitamin Enhanced Lip Balm--if you lick your lips you get a daily dose of Vitamin C. Also, KORA Organics Citrus Mist, tweezers, cell phone, RMS Beauty "Un" Cover-Up and Lip2Cheek.

Beauty from the inside out:
Mediation. Nurturing the mind, body, and soul connection. Exercise often. Keep moving. From the outside, using my certified organic skincare. I also feed my body with foods that are high in nutrients like lots of fresh greens and noni juice.

Exercise regime:
I like exercises that I enjoy like ballet, Pilates, swimming yoga, even jumping on the trampoline with my son.

Cleanse or not:
Because I'm a certified life coach I'll just do my own cleanse and have cold-pressed organic green juices. A three-day green juice cleanse helps reboot my system. The body can really heal when you're detoxifying it, and provide it with the right nutrients.

Beauty essentials:
The KORA Organics Age Defying Phytox Oil. I love the results I've been getting over the past six months. Also, the body lotion and citrus mist. I'm obsessed with tweezers. I feel like I need to pluck one of two hairs from my brows every day. And an eyelash curler.

Skincare secret:
A dry body brush. I'm obsessed with dry brushing in the morning and at night. It's very good for circulation.

Hair remedy:
A coconut oil treatment overnight. I put a towel down while I sleep.

In-tub must-read:
The Optimized Woman by Miranda Gray.

Spa-cation at:
Qualia in Queensland. It's an ecofriendly spa that's private and has incredible views.

Fragrance of choice:
KORA Organics new Heart Chakra Essence, an essential oil fragrance rollerball fragrance. It's my personal brand of supercharged oils that really heals and nourishes your heart. It uses aromatherapy to inspire kindness and compassion. It has a very high vibration.

Best advice from mom:
Let your heart shine.

Best advice from the pros:
Don't take anything personally.

Beauty icons:
Audrey Hepburn. Jane Birkin. Bridgette Bardot.

Anything else:
I'm very passionate about the whole mind-body connection. It's not just about nutrition on the inside, or nutrition on the outside. Rose quartz is infused in all of my products to give the vibration of love so you feel nurtured and appreciated.

Forget about bright makeup, it's all about the nude.

The actresses on this week's best beauty list glowed and glowed some more. We had Connie Britton radiating like the goddess she is, with subtle shimmer on her eyelids and a light pink flush that brought out her natural freckles. Then there's Gabrielle Union, who is fiercely continuing her glimmering red carpet reign with an almost gradient flesh-toned lip.

See these two ladies and the others who are convincing us to go nude for the rest of summer. With our makeup, we mean.

Prince Harry To Visit The United States In October, Cue Freak Out

Kensington Palace announced earlier this week that Prince Harry is visiting the United States at the end of October. HOORAY!

The prince will be stopping by Washington, D.C. to attend events related to the Invictus Games, a sporting event he started in 2014 for wounded, injured and sick service personnel. The next games will be held in Orlando, Florida in 2016, the palace said.

When Prince Harry previously visited D.C. in 2013, he caused quite the stir as congressional staffers packed the halls and even outdoor walkways to catch a glimpse.

The most recent royals to cross the pond were Prince Charles and his wife Camilla, who visited the U.S. back in March. The pair also toured D.C., meeting with President Obama and checking out the usual tourist hot spots, like the Lincoln Memorial and Mount Vernon.

Fingers crossed Prince George and Princess Charlotte come visit soon!

Nick Jonas Denies Dating Kendall Jenner

Nick Jonas and Kendall Jenner's relationship has officially been downgraded from taking it "very slowly" to a figment of our imaginations.

Earlier this month, sources told Us Weekly that the 19-year-old model began dating the 22-year-old singer after she was introduced to him by mutual pal Gigi Hadid, who is dating Jonas' brother Joe. And just this week, sources told E! News that the pair were keeping things "pretty light as of now."

Awww, cute, but that's a not how Jonas sees it. In a story published Friday, he told E! News, "We're not dating,"

He added, "Kendall is great and naturally with her being good friends with Gigi and with Joe and Gigi dating, there are times we'll be in the same place and we all hang out."

As for Jenner, she's been way too busy soaking up the sun in St Barts to clear up dating rumors:

Bikini'd Kourtney Kardashian Enjoys The Beach While Scott Disick Vacations In Mexico

Kourtney Kardashian soaked up the sun in St Barts while her ex Scott Disick was thousands of miles away in Mexico.

Kardashian was photographed in a color-block bikini walking along the beach with children Mason and Penelope and sister Kendall Jenner Thursday, enjoying the last days of her family vacation.

Meanwhile, Disick was over 2,000 miles away at Joe Francis' Casa Aramara in Punta Mita, Mexico. He shared a photo on Instagram Thursday from a hot tub.

Kardashian and Disick split in July after nine years and three children together. Disick's "partying" was apparently part of the issue.

Kris Jenner opened up about the breakup in Haute Living, saying: “[Kourtney's] kind of my hero right now -- she makes good decisions. She always puts her children first and is accepting, loving, and dedicated to her family -- she doesn’t get easily ruffled. This situation has made me realize how strong she is."

Despicable Fat-Shaming Campaign Aims To Reveal People's ‘#ThinnerBeauty’

$
0
0

"No shaming please. No hate speech please."

That's what was written in the About section in a new "skinny acceptance" campaign called Project Harpoon before it was taken down from Facebook. The "campaign" photoshops images of plus-size women to make them look skinnier.

And yes, it's wildly problematic.

The creators of Project Harpoon describe the project on Instagram as a "movement" that asks people to support "being in shape and not feeding into obesity." The images include plus-size celebrities, models and everyday people.

It's fat-shaming at its ugliest.

Under the misguided mission that the project is showing everyone's "#ThinnerBeauty," Project Harpoon's now-defunct Facebook page described the campaign as being "dedicated to showing both sides of modern day beauty."

"In current societal fashion, a recent trending surge of ‘pro-obesity’ and ‘fat acceptance’ have paved the way for many people to renounce exercise and personal healthcare in general," the page's description read. "The page aims to only show that being skinny is okay as well! Skinny shaming is not okay."

(Quick reminder: No one is shaming skinny people by highlighting fat or plus-size bodies. We highlight fat and plus-size bodies because they're rarely represented in pop-culture and are stigmatized in real life.)

Before the campaign's account was removed from Instagram, the photoshopped posts included horrible captions beneath each image.

"From runaway freight train to fashion week NYC runway model, she's got some potential," one caption read beneath an image of a plus-size woman on a runway next to the same image photoshopped to make the woman look much slimmer.

Another Instagram post featured a photoshopped image of a plus-size woman wearing a feminist t-shirt, with the caption: "If you're a feminist, you should at least be in shape so you can attend the protests, not get stuck in the parking garage!"

The campaign was originally discovered on Facebook on Aug. 19, but it looks like both Facebook and Instagram have removed the project's page. Before being removed from the two platforms, Project Harpoon had over 2,500 Instagram followers and had gained momentum on Facebook after Facebook Newswire posted it on their page.

Instagram confirmed to The Huffington Post UK that Project Harpoon's account was disabled for violating their bullying policy.

After being kicked off the other two social media platforms, Project Harpoon moved to Twitter and Reddit to photoshop images of women (and a few men) without their permission

The images include celebrities such as Melissa McCarthy, Rebel Wilson, Meghan Trainor and plus-size models Tess Holliday and Ashley Graham.

Many people have criticized the project as peak fat-shaming and blatantly offensive. Among those horrified by the project is plus-size model and outspoken body love activist Tess Holliday who's own images were wrongfully photoshopped.

"It's abominable that this [Facebook page] is using my image without permission to promote themselves," Holliday told E! News. "This kind of hit piece is exactly why I started #EffYourBeautyStandards. I am asking my followers to boycott this [page] and any others like it. Loving yourself is the most powerful message we all need to stand behind."

We couldn't agree more.

Meet the Woman Behind Beyoncé's Street Style Transformation

"She wears the crown for all the work that she's put into the industry," says Beyoncé's personal wardrobe curator, Zerina Akers. "But I also want her to have fun. After all she is a woman."

Over the past year, Akers has worked with the multiplatinum superstar analyzing the right cuts, fits, and silhouettes solidifying Queen Bey's place in fashion royalty--one which the consummately best-dressed singer maintains through not only her own wardrobe, but a forthcoming partnership with Topshop, too. But there's another, equally stylish side of the pop icon, and anyone who visits the 33-year-old's Instagram or website will notice: Recently she has been upping her fashion game with seemingly impromptu shoots no matter where in the world she happens to be. We've also seen Bey sport some names outside the runway regulars including Harbison, Marco de Vincenzo, and Romeo Hunte--courtesy of Akers. "I really wanted to bring in some new designers, some younger kids to see what they're doing," Akers told us recently, adding, "and then incorporate more international designers and underground streetwear designers out of London."

It's been a masterful evolution for the singer who has lately taken to bold color, feminine prints, and punchy accessories. For the Mayweather-Pacquiao fight, Mrs. Carter slipped into a cardinal Harbison jumpsuit, while another occasion saw her opt for a tailored, canary yellow Zadig & Voltaire suit emphasizing the star's renewed focus on rainbow-like shades. "I wanted to be a little more experimental with color," says Akers, adding, "like the orange Cushnie et Ochs top and pink Dsquared2 shorts. She's such a bright person and I feel like in fashion today everyone strays away from color."

However, one outfit that Akers references as a favorite was an all-cream look Beyoncé wore earlier this summer, which hinted at the shift in wardrobe that's sophisticated and clean, but accessible: Pairing a topper from Barneys New York with Frame Denim jeans, her ensemble was a study in how to approach neutral dressing at all price points. "High-low is all about color selection, shape, and fabrication of the garment," explains Akers. "I can get a skirt for $50 in matte jersey. It's going to move and hug the body in a similar way as a skirt that's $795." Akers says the secret to her A-list client's style comes down to the fit: She and Bey have been gravitating toward asymmetrical and bias cuts.

But the best part of her role, the stylist maintains, is being able see Beyoncé excited about the looks. "That's the reward," says Akers matter-of-factly. "That she's enjoying herself and feels beautiful and confident." How else, after all, to run the world?

Kristen Stewart Doesn't Owe You a 'Coming Out' Speech

$

BY RACHEL KRAMER BUSSEL

Kristen Stewart has issued a bold response to those intent on confirming exactly what sexual label to pin on her. In the latest issue of Nylon, in which the actress appears on the cover, she tells anyone interested in her sexuality: "Google me, I'm not hiding." She added:

If you feel like you really want to define yourself, and you have the ability to articulate those parameters and that in itself defines you, then do it. But I am an actress, man. I live in the fucking ambiguity of this life and I love it. I don't feel like it would be true for me to be like, 'I'm coming out!' No, I do a job. Until I decide that I'm starting a foundation or that I have some perspective or opinion that other people should be receiving... I don't. I'm just a kid making movies.

It's a fitting statement from Kristen Stewart, not only because she's called fame "the worst thing in the world," but also because she's saying, essentially, that the focus on her personal life detracts from discussion of her work -- or anything else about her. It's a reminder that Stewart doesn't owe the Internet an official "coming out" -- and to presume she does is insulting and insensitive.

MORE FROM THE DAILY DOT

Already, her sexuality has become part of the cultural conversation about Stewart -- this article being no exception, I admit. Whereas Nylon simply went with "Riding Shotgun with Kristen Stewart" for a headline, countless reports about the interview have honed in on her comments about her sexuality, making it the focal point. Some, such as "Kristen Stewart plays coy over sexuality rumors," made it seem as if she didn't go far enough in her statement.

This is natural, I suppose, in a world where, as the Advocate explains, before a celebrity like Stewart has officially "come out, "media outlets create "a glossary of queer innuendo that is meant to signal to a reader that a person is gay or in a same-sex relationship, without actually stating it outright." Their hilarious list of these ways of saying-it-without-saying-it -- which includes "tomboy," "gal pal," and "sapphic circle" -- highlight the absurdity of our need to make Stewart answer the question "What are you?" not for her satisfaction, but for ours.

By phrasing her comments as she did, Stewart turns the question back on the asker, pointedly making us collectively wonder, "Why do we care so much about who she's sleeping with? What does it change about how we perceive her whether she's dating a man or a woman?" Those questions, whether we're talking about a famous movie star or the rest of us, are much harder to answer than a simple word can ever summarize.

In an interview with Beatrice in 1997, writer Jill Nagle said, "Sex is what academics would call oversignified. You can play tennis with a friend without worrying about 'what it means,' but you can't do that with sex." That quote has stayed with me, because even though in the intervening years, we've made a lot of progress in terms of being more knowledgeable and accepting of a variety of sexual orientations, sex acts, and genders, we still want a simple way of framing a topic that's actually more complex, in many cases, than one word can summarize.

We still get so fixated on who people are screwing we practically salivate over every juicy detail -- witness the media frenzy when an interview with Cate Blanchett was edited in a way that implied she'd had sexual relationships with women, followed by her clarification that she hadn't, actually. Stewart does not want to be a poster child, and her comments, appearing two months after her mother was quoted in the UK's Sunday Mirror confirming Stewart's relationship with assistant Alicia Cargile, are a way of making it clear that she takes such fascination with her sexuality as intrusive.

Stewart is also making a larger point about the changing role of labels like gay, lesbian, and bisexual -- namely, that for many people, they are beside the point. She went on to tell Nylon, "I think in three or four years, there are going to be a whole lot more people who don't think it's necessary to figure out if you're gay or straight. It's like, just do your thing."

We've seen numerous similar sentiments in recent pop culture, from people who are proud, unashamed, and not hiding their same-sex attractions and relationships, but don't want to be defined by them, from Miley Cyrus' pronouncements about being gender- and sexually fluid and Raven-Symone's rejection of the label "gay" ("I want to be labeled a human who loves humans") to Maria Bello's embrace of the term "whatever" to describe her sexual orientation and Ilana on Broad City's declaration that "I have sex with people different from me."

In their way, those rejecting sexual labels are offering up a very optimistic point of view, one that presumes that whatever your sexual orientation, you are entitled to explore it and define it for yourself, regardless of what anyone else thinks. This is, of course, true -- though it's vital to note that we haven't yet reached the point where living either in the ambiguity Stewart praises or as an out gay, lesbian, or bisexual person means you're free from discrimination.

Stewart's right to find the questioning off-putting (if you don't agree, ask yourself if you'd want your every date, kiss or act of holding hands, let alone what you do in bed, obsessively scrutinized). As Sarah Seltzer pointed out at Flavorwire, just as asking celebrities whether they're feminists has led to an increasingly pointless PR spin cycle, so too does questioning them about their sexuality often come across futile and passé. Seltzer argues it's in celebs' best interest to remain as publicly ambiguous about their sexuality as possible, lest they be pigeonholed.

To some extent, I agree, but in Stewart's case, specifically, her words don't sound ambiguous. They sound like the opinions of someone who simply feels there are more important things in her public life than her personal relationships.

That's not to say having out queer celebrities as role models isn't important; rather, that those who want to take on that responsibility should be able to do so voluntarily, or else it's pointless -- a debate exemplified in the responses to Roxane Gay saying on Twitter that Stewart's sexuality is not a big deal. Stewart clearly does not want her sex life to precede her acting in the public eye. She doesn't want her sexuality to oversignified, or even, it seems, brought up at all.

The latter is unlikely to happen, but we can grant Stewart -- and by extension, everyone else -- the right to define or not define their sex lives as they see fit.

Well, according to Us Weekly, the 28-year-old posed for the Kardashian-inspired pic in honor of her husband Spencer Pratt's 32nd birthday.

How One Man Gamed Instagram To Show Support For #FreeTheNipple

$

James Shamsi is on a mission to free the nipple on Instagram -- or at least point out the social platform's murky policies when it comes to "acceptable" nudity. Like many women (and a few good men) before him, Shamsi noticed the double standard applied to men and women's nipples on Instagram. Namely, women's nipples are censored, while men's are not.

"I realized the absurdity in the over-sexualization of the female nipple," Shamsi told The Huffington Post via email. "I wanted to show Instagram just how silly their own policies were by showing them how easily male nipples could be interpreted as female -- and with the greater aim of highlighting the fact that the only real difference [between men's and women's nipples] are the weighting we choose to give to female nipples according to labels we arbitrarily assign to them as a society."

To test out Instagram's policies, Shamsi posted the below, cropped photograph of a man's chest on Instagram.

Since the nipples look as though they could be those of a woman, he suspected that if reported, Instagram would remove the image. He even asked his Facebook friends to report the image so he could test his theory.

⛔⛔⛔ PLEASE REPORT ME (Insta: @jamesshamsi) ⛔⛔⛔I'm doing an experiment on my Instagram (@jamesshamsi).For those of you...

Posted by James Samir Shamsi on Tuesday, August 18, 2015

Unsurprisingly, it worked. Instagram removed the image for being in violation of its Community Guidelines a few hours after it was posted. Shamsi then contacted Instagram, alerting them that the chest they had censored was actually a man's. Soon after, the post was reinstated. "Instagram reinstated the photo because these were male #facepalm," Shamsi wrote in a subsequent Instagram post (below).

Shamsi's nipple experiment follows a similar campaign first started by Associate Professor Micol Hebron in June 2014. She brilliantly suggested that women simply paste male nipples over their own scandalous lady ones. Problem solved!

TBT to that time, over a year ago (June 2014) that I posted an image of male nipple and told everyone to put it over...

Posted by Micol Hebron on Friday, July 3, 2015

Instagram seems to realize that creating guidelines for nudity is a seriously fraught process. In a statement to The Daily Dot regarding Shamsi's photograph, an Instagram spokesperson said:

Standards around nudity vary greatly by culture, country, age, and other factors. Our goal has always been to find a balance between enabling people to express themselves, while also making sure that our large, diverse, global community feels comfortable. Striking the right balance is hard -- and examples like this highlight the complexity of this issue. As always, we continue to analyze our policies to make sure that we’re listening to people and meeting the needs of our global community.

In January, Instagram told The Huffington Post that they "recognize that we don’t always get it right" when it comes to nudity on the platform. It looks like they are still grappling with where to draw the line.

Torturing Animals! For Eye Liner?

$
0
0
One of the most heinous acts of animal cruelty is the egregious use of cosmetic ingredient testing on innocent creatures. The procedures are blood-curdling: force-feeding to the point of burst, irritants rubbed into skin and eye without anesthetic, and swallowing chemicals to the point of "lethal dose." And once testing is complete, the animals who forewent so much of their precious, thankless lives for people's vanity are callously and painfully discarded as nothing more than worthless detritus.

This shocking disregard for the welfare and sentience of animals needs to end!

2015-08-20-1440110342-8860123-cosmeticsimage.jpg

Thankfully, more than thirty countries including many in the European Union, Israel, and India, among others, have enacted cruelty-free cosmetics policies. This is a great start to be sure, but the United States, probably under industry duress, has not caught up with these forward thinking nations. Indeed, the United States' regulatory apparatus neither requires nor forbids animal testing for cosmetics, an indefensibly lackadaisical, timid position.

Wayne Pacelle, the President and CEO of The Humane Society of the United States has stated about testing that:

Given the ready availability of alternatives, there is no compelling reason to continue using outdated animal testing methods that cause tremendous animal suffering. So many companies are already using non-animal tests for shampoos, makeups and other products sold around the world, and the United States can help accelerate that trend.

Now is a time to act. There is a new opportunity to end this wicked practice in the United States and it needs our voice! Currently, the Humane Cosmetics Act (H.R. 2858) is a bill that proposes to end cosmetics testing on animals. The HCA calls for a prohibition on animal testing for cosmetics produced in the United States, eased in gradually over the course of a year after passage, and would also prohibit the importation of cosmetics for which animal tests had been conducted (to take effect three years after passage). What's remarkable about the bill, never mind the substantive affect it will have on the lives of millions of creatures, is its bipartisan nature: the bill is sponsored by Republican Representatives Martha McSally (AZ) and Joe Heck (NV) and Democratic Representatives Don Beyer (VA) and Tony Cárdenas (CA). (As of June 25, H.R. 2858 was referred to the Subcommittee on Health.)

But because this is the United States Congress, passage of the bill might take a while. So while we wait and hope for Congress to act, use this website as a source to see which companies are cruelty free and use no testing while developing their products. In addition, if you feel so included, many groups have already sponsored online petitions to Congress in support of this needed legislation.

The Jewish tradition has been clear. Rabbi Samson Raphael Hirsch said, "here you are faced with God's teaching, which obliges you not only to refrain from inflicting unnecessary pain on any animal, but to help and, when you can, to lessen the pain whenever you see an animal suffering, even through no fault of yours," (Horeb, Chapter 60, Sect. 416). It's taught in the authoritative work Minchat Chinuch (80) that "there is not only a prohibition of causing pain to animals, but there is also an obligation to prevent their pain wherever possible." While there may be a right to conduct animal testing to produce life-saving research, there is still a duty to reduce all animal suffering at all costs. And when looking at cosmetics, surely it is inappropriate to torture animals.

This practice of torturing animals for beauty items is cruel and indefensible. This is the most opportune time to end this horrendous practice once and for all in the United States. And the numbers are on our side: a poll taken in 2013 found that 73 percent of American voters are in favor of banning animal testing for cosmetics. Let us do our part to flaunt our enshrined rights to advocate for this bill! Now is the time for us all to get active and vocal, to call upon our elected officials to support this Act and join other countries of the world by transitioning towards a cruelty free culture.

Rabbi Dr. Shmuly Yanklowitz is the Founder and CEO of The Shamayim V'Aretz Institute and the author of eight books on Jewish ethics.

Beautiful Black Men And Women Flaunt Their Looks With #FlexinMyComplexion

It's no secret -- society often associates beauty with Eurocentric ideals. Even a Google search for "beautiful skin" renders mostly images of white women. Because of this, people with darker skin complexions often go unnoticed and uncelebrated -- but that's changing now.

A group of black women decided to redefine beauty on their own terms with the hashtag #FlexinMyComplexion.

Women (and a few men) of color showed off their photos on social media, flaunting their brown skin. Though the hashtag has been around for a few months, #FlexinMyComplexion amassed more than 85,000 tweets after POCBeauty asked it's more than 26,000 followers to use it and submit photos of themselves embracing their darker skin, according to Clutch

"I think it’s important for women of color to know if they’re brown/dark they’re beautiful too and deserve to be noticed," the woman who runs POCBeauty told Clutch."Dark skin, in all backgrounds, is beautiful and should be recognized as so.” POCBeauty is a Twitter account that celebrates people of color. The creator remains anonymous because she's constantly harassed for highlighting non-white women, Clutch wrote.

Ironically enough, white women used the hashtag to express that they didn't like that it excluded them. Go figure.

Users, including writer Maisha Johnson, clarified the hashtag's purpose.

"It's not about exclusion, it's giving some space to people who usually don't have space," Johnson told BBC in the video above. "It's not about saying we're more important and you can't participate because you're not beautiful, it's about saying we don't hear nearly enough that we're beautiful and that's what this is about."

Despite the criticism, the powerful tweets show off the beautiful and various shades of melanin. Take notes, mainstream media:
