Make Peace, Not War, and Other Holiday Tips

$

0
The holidays are the most festive time of year, but they can also be the most tension-filled. Here are some tips on how to have a low-stress season.

At the holidays, think merry and bright vs. serious and somber. Like eggnog, the conversation should be light.

Agree that it's okay to disagree with family, friends and party acquaintances, and then avoid the subjects you disagree on. Don't discuss finances, health problems, politics, religion, marital secrets or office gossip.

Be sure and RSVP to a party invitation. Your host will need a head count for food and beverages.

Dress for success. Holiday time is a time to wear something special, and it's always better to be overdressed than underdressed. If you're unsure what to wear, ask your host.

Don't overindulge at social gatherings. This applies to conversation, food and alcohol.

Don't be a wallflower. You were invited to add something to the party. Earn your keep by making conversation.

If you spill food or drink, own up to it. Offer to reimburse the host for any damages.

When you're a dinner guest, eat what is served unless you're allergic to that food. If you don't care something, pretend to eat by mixing the food on your plate. If the host asks why you're not eating, just say that you're leaving room for dessert.

Dining tips: never butter a whole roll, only a section of one; scoop your soup spoon away from you, not toward you; your napkin stays on your lap through the meal or is placed on the chair if you must excuse yourself; always pass the salt and pepper together, and remember that the bread plate goes to the left of the dinner plate, drinks on the right.

Never toast yourself at a gathering. This is the host's job. You can say thanks after you've been toasted.

Planning and giving parties is a lot of work. Don't forget to say thank you when you leave an event, then call the next day and send a thank-you note within 24 hours so the message is not lost.

Instead of buying someone who has everything another material object, give the gift that keeps on giving: a donation to that person's favorite charity in their name. Or give unique gifts, such as homemade jam or pickled veggies from your garden.

Re-gift without fear. Just make sure to rewrap the gift with new wrapping paper, ribbon and a card.

• Games and books for your host's children are perfect host gifts that will be used for years to come.

Don't wait till December 24 to buy gifts. Now that we can shop online 24/7, there's no excuse to procrastinate.

If sending out holiday cards, be sure and handwrite a personal message even if it's short. Holiday letters should be avoided except for your immediate family. And don't feel you have to send a card just because you got one.

For tipping, a general rule of thumb is to give cash equal to a service if you can manage. If not, homemade cake or cookies will be appreciated.

The 5 Hottest Cosmetic Procedures for Men Over 40

$

0
The cosmetic surgery industry is often one viewed as something for women, but the reality is that thousands of men go under the knife to improve their appearance every single year in the United States.

In fact, the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) has seen a 273 percent increase in the number of procedures performed on men since it started tracking statistics in 1997. Here are some of the top procedures men opt for when having cosmetic work done.

Liposuction

As men get older, fat deposits tend to build up in the abdomen, love handles and chest. Even men who are at healthy weight can have unwanted fat buildup in these areas. Liposuction is a common procedure to remove that fat and better contour the body. This cosmetic procedure breaks up and removes fat from certain areas of the body using a cannula inserted under the skin and removed using a high-pressure vacuum. This is the most common cosmetic procedure in the United States, with over 400,000 procedures occurring every year.

To be a candidate for liposuction, a patient needs to have a stable body weight, but with undesirable fat deposits in specific areas of the body. It should not be treated as a weight loss method, but rather as a sculpting method. Dr. Christopher K Livingston, a board certified plastic surgeon and hand surgeon in Houston, Texas believes any cosmetic surgery such as liposuction should be a "reward for a healthy lifestyle". He states "these patients are the best candidates and can have pleasing and long lasting results".

Gynecomastia Correction Surgery

Sometimes when hormones are out of balance or a man is over weight, men will struggle with over-developed or enlarged breasts. Gynecomastia can be emotionally difficult for men, changing quality of life as the man avoids activities that draw attention to the condition. Gynecomastia correction surgery involves cutting out excess glandular tissue and ultrasonic liposuction. The overall goal is to improve the contour of the chest.

In 2014, the ASPS estimated a total of 26,175 men underwent this procedure. Candidates for gynecomastia should visit their doctors first to rule out any medical problems causing their condition. As long as there are not underlying conditions that need to be treated, you are a good candidate. Dr. Livingston performs this surgery weekly and his patients state it "changes their lives".

Hair Transplant

When hair starts to thin, a hair transplant can help restore the look of a full head of hair. This common procedure, which has been around since the 1950s, involves taking a narrow strip of scalp tissue from the back of the head, dividing it into small grafts with just a few hairs each, and then placing those grafts into small holes on the front of the head where the hair is thinning.

Because the area where the hair is removed is in the back of the head, the existing hair will cover it.

Most men who are good health can have hair transplant surgery, provided they have sufficient hair in the donor area to perform the procedure. The procedure takes between four and eight hours under local anesthesia. In 2014, the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery indicated 112,409 people underwent surgical hair restoration procedures.

Botox

Men struggling with wrinkles on the face can turn to Botox for help. Botox involves injecting the bacterium Clostridium botulinum into the muscles that contribute to deep wrinkles between the eyebrows and other areas of the face.

Botox blocks the signals from the nerves to these muscles, so that they cannot contract, allowing the wrinkles to soften and relax. This effectively works on wrinkles of the forehead, crow's feet area and frown lines. It will not work on wrinkles caused by sun damage or gravity.

Botox has few risks and is considered a minimally invasive treatment. The effects last between four to six months, which means patients will need repeat applications to maintain their results.
However, over time the wrinkles will appear less severe as the muscles are trained to relax, which may mean fewer treatments are necessary to maintain results.

This is by far one of the most common procedures, with over 410,000 men having it in 2014 according to the ASPS. Dr. Livingston recommends a board certified plastic surgeon perform the botox injections that has experience in skin care, facial fillers, and laser treatments for overall facial rejuvenation that can be easy to perform, quick (during a lunchbreak), and relatively painless.

Blepharoplasty

Drooping eyelids can make a man seem older than he really is, and blepharoplasty is a common procedure to treat this problem.

The ASPS indicates that between 2010 and 2015, rates of men undergoing blepharoplasty increased by 34 percent.

Eyelid drooping occurs as an individual ages and the eyelids stretch, while at the same time the muscles supporting them weaken. This provides an environment for excessive fat to build up under the eyelids and above the eye.

This problem is a cosmetic one for most patients, but some people experience a loss of peripheral vision because of the drooping skin.

Blepharoplasty is an outpatient procedure that involves cutting the fold of the eyelid to remove excess skin, muscle and fat, then closing the cut. Because the cut is done on the fold or directly under the lashes on the lower eyelid, scarring is well hidden.

The procedure takes about two hours. Dr. Livingston believes this procedure is becoming much more common because it can be performed under local anesthesia in the office with excellent results and the recovery time is about one week. Dr. Livingston believes "men want cosmetic surgery that is easy to recover from and return to work or activities quickly".

If you are a man who is considering plastic surgery, you are in good company. Talk to your surgeon today to discuss your candidacy, and enjoy an appearance that is a reflection of your total health with the help of one of these procedures.

Amber Rose Channels Feminist Icons For Paper Magazine Shoot

Kim Kardashian can keep her champagne flutes because Amber Rose channeling suffragette Susan B. Anthony might be the best thing we've seen all year.

In the second installment of the Break the Internet issue, Paper Magazine decided to honor their readership with a collection of outrageous photo shoots entitled #Fandemonium, because this time "it was the fans who deserve the kudos."

Amber Rose was one of celebrities chosen to "make fans go nuts" for a photo shoot, in which she channeled some of the most iconic feminists in history, including Gloria Steinem, Susan B. Anthony, Dorothy Pitman Hughes and, of course, Rosie the Riveter.

Take a look below.

Rose organized "Slut Walk" in early October to speak out against slut-shaming and delivered an impassioned speech in which she stated, "[I've] decided to have this slut walk for women who have been through s**t."

The 32-year old mother of one attracted a considerable amount of media attention after her split with rapper Wiz Khalifa, an experience she credits with sparking her interest in feminism.

"I would look on [Wiz's] Instagram and he would have pictures of all these women all over him," she told Paper. "And then I would post a picture of me and my son. And people would be like, 'Does your son know that his mother's a whore?'"

"People are like, 'Wiz is out fucking mad bad bitches and you're at home crying over him because he's the best thing that fucking ever happened to you and now you're just a fat, bald-headed single mother and no one will ever love you,'" she continued. "So yeah, I guess months of seeing shit like that, I was just like, 'I can't live like this. There's something wrong.'"

Despite her negative experiences, Rose refuses to accept the ways society constructs womanhood as somehow inferior and hopes that women of all types will continue to unapologetically challenge patriarchy.

"I guess what I want with our generation is to have it not be that way," she said. "Like, all of us as women, let's just stick together and look out for each other. I was really glad that my Slut Walk was extremely diverse. There were all types of women from all walks of life there ... That would be the main thing for me ... really just try to take the racism out of feminism for our generation."

Holy S**t, Lisa Frank Is Hiring

$

Girls of the world, if your 9-year-old selves could have been granted one single wish, what would it have been? Besides making out with Josh Hartnett. Or bestowing your Tamagotchi with eternal life. Yes, I'm talking about working for her majesty of cool binder folders, goddess of anthropomorphized animals sharing ice cream sundaes, reigning queen of lunchboxes with attitude. The one and only Lisa Frank.

Girls (now probably women or somewhere in between), we bear potentially life-changing news: Lisa Frank is hiring.

Well, at least according to this Craigslist posting

That's right. You, sitting at your sad brown desk in your sad white office, could soon be in the magical land of Tucson, Arizona, surrounded by a potentially underwater office definitely covered in rainbow magic and sparkles. Your coworkers would likely include aliens and flirtatious golden retrievers, and you can all goof off and watch YouTube videos together until the boss unicorn comes in and everyone is like, "Get back to work!" But this so-called "work" would just be drawing magical universes of your own creation.

The Huffington Post has reached out to Lisa Frank, Inc., to verify the job posting, but (probably due to the wildly secretive nature of Ms. Frank) we have yet to hear back. So apply at your own risk. Or, while you wait for more news, change your email signature to Queen Professional Lisa Frank Artist for the day just to feel it out.

Jezebel did report on a potential Lisa Frank job posting last year, which noted that applicants must be willing to relocate to Tucson -- the headquarters of the company. And if you're tempted to visit to the Lisa Frank website after reading this, you'll come across a message prompting visitors to check back soon to see the "new Fantastic World of Lisa Frank® website!"

Whatever's happening over at LF headquarters, if you're an obsessed artist who is open to living in Arizona and has experience in packaging and process design, will you please switch bodies with me by spell or incantation so I can make my lifelong dream come true? Thanks.

UPDATE: The post has since been removed from Craigslist. We are awaiting comment from Lisa Frank, Inc.

Every lady's wardrobe contents are different. Each one tells a story of who you are and is an expression of personal style. However when it comes to expressing yourself as a polished leader, there are certain staple pieces that should be taking up residence in your most adored room: your closet.(It's definitely mine anyway!)

Fashion for women forty and over has come a long way. Middle aged women can certainly embrace the latest trends, and still appear professional and classy. Incorporating styles that are both flattering for your body and image, just takes a little creativity. For business dress, it's best to keep it simplistic and and somewhat conservative.

There used to be a time when professionals were expected to put on a suit or very dressy attire for each day. Everything has changed, today there are so many different perceptions of formal and business casual. Tuning into the environment you are dressing for is crucial, otherwise you might appear underdressed, sloppy, or overdressed.

Many business professionals travel frequently, so having the right wardrobe choices available takes away some of the stress involved with getting from A to B. When on travel, choose one dominant color. To add a little pizzazz and personality to your business dress, you can accessorize with brighter hues. A statement necklace, scarf, and the right makeup can also liven up your look without looking too out of place.

Of course always being neat and presentable goes a long way. One of my favorite style experts, Lawrence Zarian quotes in his book 10 Commandments For the Perfect Wardrobe -"Wrinkled clothes portray the image of ,I don't care or I don't know what I'm doing." It's dressing and acting like every day is a gift, that will make you stand out as a strong leader."

Prince Harry Swaps His Royal Duds For Saving Animals

He's no fictional action hero, but Prince Harry is trying to save the world in his own way.

The photos below show the dressed-down 31-year old on a trip this week to Kruger National Park in Kempiana, South Africa, viewing rhinoceroses that were killed by poachers and meeting with preservationists from the South African Wildlife College who are working around the clock to save the animals.

The visit brings extra recognition to an issue that's long been important to Harry.

He spent weeks working as a wildlife conservation volunteer in Tanzania, South Africa, Botswana and Namibia last summer, and this week released heartrending personal photos from that experience to coincide with his current trip.

"I know how lucky I am to have these experiences, but hearing stories from people on the ground about how bad the situation really is upset and frustrated me," Harry said in a caption posted to the official Kensington Palace Instagram account. "How can it be that 30,000 elephants were slaughtered last year alone? And for what? Their tusks? Seeing huge carcasses of rhinos and elephants scattered across Africa with their horns and tusks missing is a pointless waste of beauty."

His current trip isn't all serious, however, and Harry balanced out his royal tour of South Africa and Lesotho with a game of tag rugby in Durban. He also spent time at a nearby beach to watch surfers demonstrate skills they've learned from the mentoring organization Surfers Not Street Children, as well.

See more pictures from his tour below:

Kylie Jenner Cleared Of Animal Abuse Charges By Animal Control

$

0

UPDATE: Kylie Jenner has been cleared of all charges of animal abuse, Derek Brown, deputy director of the LA County Department of Animal Care and Control, told The Huffington Post. Brown said that his team had gone to Jenner's home to investigate the reports and "found no neglect."

"The breed is a lean breed of dog. Sometimes photos can be deceiving," Brown said. "People see slight ribs in a photo and think 'Oh my god,' but in this case, there's no neglect, and we're more than satisfied that the animal is being properly cared for."

Brown added that Bambi is receiving medical care for a condition related to the dog's small frame, but declined to give details.

PREVIOUSLY: The Los Angeles County Department of Animal Care and Control is investigating Kylie Jenner for possible animal abuse after receiving reports that the 18-year-old reality star has been neglecting her pet Italian Greyhounds, reports TMZ.

Over the weekend, Jenner posted a brief video of two of her three dogs to Snapchat. In the video, her dog Bambi appears to be very thin, with the dog's ribs and vertebrae clearly visible beneath its caramel fur.

The video prompted many commenters to note how skinny Bambi looked -- and apparently spurred at least one concerned citizen to contact Animal Control and report possible neglect. According to TMZ, the department's policy is to investigate every report of animal abuse it receives, so Jenner's celebrity will be no shield to an inquiry.

It is not, however, clear that Bambi is actually unhealthy. Italian Greyhounds are naturally lean, so Jenner may be feeding the dog a proper amount of food. A  representative from the Italian Greyhound Club of America told TMZ that Bambi's weight looked normal for the breed in the video.

Jenner's other two Italian Greyhounds are named Norman and Sophia. They, too, look slim in the many photos of them Jenner posts on her social media accounts, but they do not appear to be as thin as Bambi.

Even if Jenner ends up being cleared of wrongdoing in this case, she's still had a rough week in the press. She was roundly criticized for posing in a wheelchair for Interview magazine after photos from the shoot emerged on Tuesday.

Request for comment made by The Huffington Post to both Animal Control and Jenner's rep has yet to be returned at this time.

29 Hilarious Cards Guaranteed To Get You In The Holiday Spirit

Can We Reduce Wrinkles With Cocoa?

$
0
0

The good news keeps on coming. After a large study found that coffee can save your life (well, not really, but coffee drinkers had lower mortality rates), a new study suggests cocoa can make your skin supple and radiant during that long, happy life, brought to you by 3-5 coffee cups a day.

Cocoa is very rich in antioxidants -- flavonoids and flavonols in particular. Our skin suffers ultraviolet damage from exposure to the elements, leading to photo aging, and antioxidants can potentially mitigate those effects.

This is what researchers were testing in a neat new study, reported in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, in which 64 women consumed chocolate drinks for 24 weeks. Half of them had drinks with 4 grams of real cocoa powder, a powder produced so that it preserves the naturally occurring flavonols (each drink had 320 mg cocoa flavonols). The other half drank a nutrient and taste-matched cocoa-flavored beverage with no flavonols. The participants and the researches were unaware of which group they were in (a double blind, randomized placebo controlled study, which is the gold standard of studies).

After 24 weeks, the women treated with cocoa showed improvement of wrinkles in the crow-feet area, and their skin was more elastic -- these results were objectively and elaborately measured and are not personal impressions. These improvements didn't appear immediately, but rather 12 weeks into the experiment.

A good-for-you pleasure?

Over the years, cocoa, used in traditional folk medicine, has demonstrated quite a few health benefits, and has been shown to lower blood pressure and cholesterol, and aid in insulin resistance.

And a series of recent studies have hinted that not only will you look young, cocoa can also help keep your mind supple. A study published in Nature Neuroscience showed that healthy 50- to 69-year-olds who drank a mixture rich in cocoa's flavonols for three months improved their cognitive function. In another new study researchers gave 90 elderly people who were cognitively intact one of 3 cocoa drinks: high, medium or low in flavonol. The groups that drank the intermediate and high flavonol drinks showed improved cognitive performance and improvement in some mental tasks. A similar study with older people that already suffered mild cognitive impairment showed that high cocoa flavonol drinks improved verbal fluency and speed of mental processing.

Before you start a chocolate binge

As a chocolate lover I really enjoy these studies, but before we see this as permission to eat chocolate in all its delicious incarnations let's be honest: Most of the chocolate in the market is mostly sugar. Cocoa flavonol content isn't listed in the nutrition label, and many chocolate foods have very little of it. So if you love chocolate, here's another excuse to enjoy it; if you're not into it, there isn't compelling evidence to start a cocoa habit at this point, even if your laugh lines are digging into permanency.

Looking for flavonoid rich cocoa foods? Here are a few tips:

Cocoa powder: This is pure cocoa solids: fermented, dried cacao beans, with the cocoa butter separated out, and the remaining solids ground into a fine powder. Processed right, it is one of the most antioxidant rich foods in the world. Natural cocoa powder has more antioxidants than the Dutch-processed or alkalized version.

Cacao nibs: These are pieces crumpled from whole cacao beans, with pure chocolaty flavor, but no sweetness at all. They can be added to both sweet and savory dishes and are super rich in antioxidants.

Dark chocolate: Cocoa solids in dark chocolate vary, and are often listed on the pack, the higher the percentage the more flavonols it packs.

Milk chocolate: By definition the milk varieties will have less cocoa solids than the dark versions, but some fine milks have as much as 35-45 percent cocoa solids, while others have as little as 10 percent, making them a good source of -- let's admit it -- sugar.

What Is Keratosis Pilaris, And Why Does It Look Like Body Acne?

$
0
0

"Beauty Glossary" is a HuffPost series that breaks down beauty product techniques, treatments and ingredients so you know exactly what you're putting onto and into your body.

Has your skin been extremely itchy or irritated now that it's much colder outside? When you remove those wool clothing layers, are there tiny bumps on your arms or thighs that just won't go away? If you answered "yes" to these questions, you may  keratosis pilaris

Often mistaken for acne, keratosis pilaris is a chronic skin condition that forms white or red bumps when hair follicles are plugged with keratin buildup. It usually appears on the cheeks, upper arms, thighs, outer legs, buttocks and back. According to board-certified dermatologist Linda Honet, it's an annoying ailment that's relatively harmless but without continuous treatment, it just comes right back.

While a pimple is usually more painful and not itchy, Honet explains that with keratosis pilaris you have "multiple little bumps with dry plugs in the hair follicle that can be raw or red."

"People who have family members with asthma, atopic dermatitis, eczema, hay fever or seasonal allergies have a higher instance of KP than people who do not," says Honet. "KP often does get worse in the winter because the humidity falls and the ambiance moisture in the air sucks away moisture in the skin. Then, it gets itchy."

The primary way that family practitioners or dermatologists like Honet treat keratosis pilaris is by moisturizing. "Often these are very heavy-duty moisturizers that have alpha hydroxy acids in them like glycolic acid or lactic acid because they are chemical exfoliators," says Honet. "They actually de-plug the hair follicles, smooth out the skin and impart more moisture."

As a medical advisor for the Gwyneth Paltrow-backed skincare line Restorsea, Honet was able to self-test the effectiveness of the brand's new Revitalizing Scalp Treatment in treating KP. The derm explained that an off-label remedy like this scalp treatment is often used, especially if it does no harm to other body parts.

Honet believes what really makes this product stand out is how gentle it is in comparison to the mechanical exfoliators that are often used to de-plug hair follicles, such as bath puffs or Clarisonic brushes. She also recommends body washes that are formulated with alpha hydroxy ingredients. "Glytone makes one that's nice with glycolic acid, and Eucerin has a whole line that's called Professional Repair that's formulated for extremely dry skin," says Honet.

Maintaining a consistent and healthy skincare regimen is key to minimizing symptoms of keratosis pilaris. You'll want to use a gentle cleanser or exfoliator when bathing and not use hot water. Be sure not to scrub too hard because it can lead to more irritation. While people usually gravitate toward steamy showers and baths during this season, Honet points out that it actually strips your skin of any natural oils that you're making. Instead, use lukewarm water and keep your bathing time brief. Then, get out of the shower while your skin is still damp and apply a treatment. "It'll seal in the moisture and allow the medication to be more effective," says Honet.

Kim Kardashian Photoshopped Her Nude Pics And People Are Weirdly Upset About It

Back in May, "Keeping Up with the Kardashians" fans got to go behind the scenes of a nude photo shoot that Kim Kardashian finally posted on her website on Tuesday

Not shockingly, it seems those photos were photoshopped and, not surprisingly, some people aren't happy about it.

If you need another comparison, again here is the photo that was shown during the E! broadcast of Kardashian's reality series and the final photoshopped photo:

There are a few things you can count on in this world -- the sun will rise in the east and set in the west and Kardashian (and 99 percent of celebrities) is going to photoshop her photos. This is a woman who employs the use of photo retouching software just to ensure that not a single hair on her head is out of place before it's posted for her adoring fans and haters alike.

But what's interesting is the episode that originally featured the nude shoot was all about insecurities. Just like the rest of us, Kardashian has parts of herself she feels insecure about. In the episode, she laments the intense amount of public scrutiny that follows every time she posts a photo, telling her younger sisters, "I'm so insecure lately. Just with my weight. I cannot leave the house without Spanx."

So let's remind ourselves that, while Kardashian is particular about her image, she's also the woman who is being called a "fat bitch" at 37 weeks pregnant.

Hmm ... is it any wonder that she Photoshops her photos?

Why Models Need Protection -- at Any Age

$

Earlier this year, a new law -- The Child Performers Protection Act of 2015 -- was proposed to Congress, which, if approved, will grant underage models necessary protections in the workplace. This is revolutionary in an industry that is so averse to changing its ways, an industry that up until now has adopted so few rules regarding the treatment of its workers. For models, there exist no wage regulations, no transparent accounting practices, no insurance or benefits of any kind, no job security, no on-the-job-conduct policy. Meaning: Behavior that in any other work setting is considered inappropriate (or worse, harassment), in the modeling world becomes acceptable.

But, a model doesn't suddenly become immune to these issues when she turns 18, the age at which this new law would cease to be enforced. No, these are systemic problems within the fashion environment that persist throughout a model's career.

16, I was scouted by one of the world's top modeling agencies. Plucked from my sheltered suburban existence, I moved to New York at 17, one month after high school graduation leaving my stuffed animal collection behind. My career, unexpectedly, lasted for almost two decades, ending in January 2015 with a voicemail from my New York-based agency: It's time we part professional ways. The equivalent of getting dumped by a text.

I had a notable career, however, landing several national and international beauty and fashion campaigns, over 20 magazine covers, a handful of TV commercials and even a larger-than-life Times Square billboard; the job afforded me a comfortable, yet modest, lifestyle, and paid for two university degrees. So no, I'm not complaining. Just pointing out that being older than 18 doesn't eliminate the chance of being mistreated within the industry:

At 19, for example, I was told by an agency director, "Don't eat anything for the next two days. Drink only water," then advised to not eat much of anything for the next two weeks. At just under six feet, I weighed 120 pounds. 2015-11-27-1448645348-1510632-Jamaica.jpg At 24, I did a shoot in Jamaica (I know, poor me) that had me posing on the beach at the point where the surf meets the land, from morning to sundown. 4 days later, the resort doctor removed a tiny pyramid of sand from each of my ears. My hearing has never been the same. At 27, after going through the necessary casting and booking procedure for a job, after making the 20-plus-hour trip to a remote location in Brazil, upon arrival, I was sent home immediately. No explanation given. A dye-job gone wrong for a shoot when I was 30 left me with half a head less of hair after the strands fell out, in large clumps, due to damage. A scene from a horror film every time I showered, leaving me without a booking (read: income) for the next six months. At 31, I was spit in the face on-set by a designer, who, afterwards, refused to pay me the contractually agreed upon amount for the shoot. And, instead of standing up for me, my agency simply dropped me. Via email. 32, I lost a $40,000 a year regular client (my only regular client at the time) -- because of an avoidable mistake my agent made without consulting me.

While these above instances are unique to my career, I know that most models have experienced something similar: Situations in which they were entirely powerless, with no one to turn to for support. Plus, I cannot list the number of times I've had to manage a too-handsy photographer, deflect overly inappropriate comments or fight to get my worked-for paycheck.

And I get it. People don't want to hear the complaints of groups believed to be more fortunate. Especially models: young, beautiful things, seemingly getting paid sacks of cash to travel the world, wear beautiful clothes and hang out with friends who are also, young, beautiful things. People don't want the illusion shattered. And yes, most people don't know a model, those Amazonian-statured, symmetrical-featured freaks. To most, these girls exist only as silent and inanimate objects. But consider that these girls are all someone's daughters.

How is it possible that this very visible and pervasive industry not only exists but thrives with no set regulations dictating the behavior of those who work within it or protecting those involved? An industry supported by scores of consumers, many oblivious to its inner workings.

Not all modeling jobs are nightmares; some are enjoyable, collaborative projects. And while many in the industry are professionals, others absolutely abuse their positions for personal gain, taking advantage of the girls who they know are helpless. Girls (and women) who understand they are disposable, replaceable by a never-ending stream of younger, newer models on a conveyor belt.

So young when I started, I soon learned that to speak up meant to be difficult, which meant to be un-hirable. Starry-eyed and impressionable, I did as I was told. And, as in any dysfunctional relationship, the aggressor uses manipulation to suppress his subject, so, over time, I came to believe that there was nothing else -- aside from modeling -- that I could do, that no one else would have me. (The absurdity of which I realize now, but only after leaving the profession.) Sadly, I believe this is what much of the modeling industry counts on: women so willing, they will do whatever it takes to succeed, to keep their job.

While this new law is a positive step, something more needs to be done to alter the mindset of the industry as a whole, to impose regulations that will protect all models, no matter their age. More needs to be done to educate the public as to what they are literally buying into.

Maybe, however, if this new law does pass, girls will embark on their careers with something I lacked: a sense of being in control, of feeling protected. And maybe they will carry this attitude with them after they turn 18, empowering them to speak up when something feels wrong or goes awry. Instead of keeping silent.

Or, maybe, those in charge -- agencies, clients, photographers -- will simply stop working with girls who are under 18. Now, with this new law, it's just too much of a hassle.

Fergie looked Fergalicious Wednesday night at the Footwear News Achievement Awards in New York City.

The 40-year-old singer wore a super sexy sheer dress with a mesh bodice and interesting cutouts. Fergie paired the look with a black bodysuit and a single, leather glove.

Look back at it:

Earlier in the week, Fergie attended the 76th Annual Two Ten Footwear Foundation Dinner and Awards in a super-chic black suit with a high ponytail.

The singer was notoriously absent from a Black Eyed Peas' 20th anniversary video released earlier this summer, which only featured group members will.i.am, apl.de.ap and Taboo.

Fergie assured fans their was no bad blood between BEP members, telling Digital Spy, "I haven't been in the group for 20 years, so it's more their anniversary of being together for 20 years."
