An Easy Little Way to Make Sweaters Less Itchy

The winter struggle: All you want to do is swaddle yourself in heavy knits, but all you end up doing is itching and scratching and breaking out into hives. Here, a solution for restoring softness to that Brillo pad of a cardigan you've been wearing.

What you need: Hair conditioner.

What you do: Fill your sink with cold water. Take out your wool culprit of choice (one that allows for hand washing, not just dry-clean only) and soak it until completely damp. Drain the sink and press out excess water from the sweater. Apply a liberal amount of hair conditioner to the garment, working it into the fibers all over with your hands. Let it sit for half an hour and then rinse out with cold water. Lay flat to dry.

How it works: Wool is just sheep hair, y'all. It requires maintenance and a little love--just like your own tresses--every now and then.

We imagine the mind of a makeup artist must swirl with brightly colored lipsticks and creamy (but never cakey) foundations, shiny glosses and powdery shadows, crisscrossing and intertwining into a kaleidoscope of shimmering colors. We imagine that's what it's like because we've seen this vision manifest via a slew of jaw-dropping makeup masterpieces IRL (like this one or this one)--hence, the "artist" moniker. But unlike other artists, makeup artists tend to be a generous bunch and are happy to share their trade secrets with those less brush-adept (e.g., never-satiated beauty editors). And like eager disciples, we lap up the wisdom, taking careful notes and even tentatively trying out their teachings on our own--albeit in the safety of our own bathrooms and not on an A-list celebrity, thankfully.

Curious what this wisdom might consist of? We've got 10 perfect examples for you ahead. These are things that makeup artists have revealed to us they do that that we--in our blithe naïveté--had never even considered. Suffice it to say our lives have changed for the better since learning them. The question is are you ready for this life change? If so, keep scrolling to learn from the masters.

#1: Powder Away
2016-01-16-1452910525-1895315-slide1makeupforever.jpg
Make Up For Ever HD Microfinish Powder ($34)
Celebrity makeup artist Monika Blunder told us that she uses loose powder for so much than finishing off a completed look--subbing in for dry shampoo is one. Or, sprinkle it between coats of mascara to instantly thicken your lashes.

#2: Get Balmy
2016-01-16-1452910605-8405547-slide2herbivore.jpg
Herbivore Coco Rose Coconut Oil Lip Conditioner ($22)
In case you didn't realize, your trusty balm is so much more than just a hydrator. Take a cue from makeup artist Daniel Martin and use it as a highlighter, or blur out eye shadow for a softer look. It also makes any blush into a cream blush--just tap it on your cheeks after applying blush, then blend it out for a dewy glow.

#3: Dilute With Moisture
2016-01-16-1452910674-1666341-slide3elizabethardeneighthourcream.jpg
Elizabeth Arden Elizabeth Arden 'Eight Hour Cream' Skin Protectant ($18)
To give any product more luminosity, employ every makeup artist's favorite trick: Just add moisturizer. Opt for a light, blendable one that seamlessly mixes with foundation, concealer, and even eye shadow or blush. Think of it like the water in your watercolor paints that are your makeup products--the more you add, the lighter and softer the finish.

#4: Add Some Texture
2016-01-16-1452910740-5013958-slide4urbandecayafterglow.jpg
Urban Decay Afterglow 8-Hour Powder Blush ($10)
This New York Fashion Week hack is our holiday makeup inspiration. To add a velvet texture to your go-to lipstick, just dab your finger in a bit of blush or warm-colored eye shadow, then pat it over your lips. So much easier and more interesting than full-on matte, trust us. Don't forget to set with a makeup setting spray!

#5: Mist Away the Matte
2016-01-16-1452910802-4858405-slide5tatchadewyskinmist.jpg
Tatcha Luminous Dewy Skin Mist ($48)
Though we have a feeling matte makeup is about to see a resurgence, right now we're fully embracing the dewy, candlelit skin trend--if only because it's so much easier than trying to keep our foreheads totally shine-free. The problem arises when you're aiming for a smooth canvas and use more than a swipe of foundation and concealer to cover your annoying breakout--things can end up veering on the cakey side. The easiest solution ever? Give yourself a little spritz with your favorite facial mist, just like a pro makeup artist. The mist will instantly diffuse any harsh lines or caked-on texture.

#6: Beat Dryness
2016-01-16-1452910848-399464-slide7beautyblender.jpg
Beautyblender The Original Beautyblender ($20)
Cold weather is enemy number one for your already dry skin; even those of us who don't normal struggle with flakiness tend to encounter it during the winter months. Enter face oil and a beauty sponge. Makeup artist Edward Cruz told us that any time he applies foundation over dry, flaky skin, he uses a Beautyblender to dab and blend a small amount of face oil over those problem areas. He promises a "smooth and fresh finish"--and we're holding him to it.

#7: Sunset Eyes
2016-01-16-1452910932-5197290-slide6toofacedbronzer.jpg
Too Faced Sun Bunny Natural Bronzer ($30)
Bronzer might not seem like the most obvious candidate to win best double-duty product, but we're going to give it a chance thanks to a tip from makeup artist Carissa Ferreri. She says sweeping bronzer over your eyelids will give a barely there wash of color and make your eyes and cheeks pop in the most natural way.

#8: Cover With Red
2016-01-16-1452911008-3143603-slide8nyxlipstick.jpg
Nyx Matte Lipstick ($6)
Rita Ora always looks flawless--which is why we're taking her makeup artist Kathy Jeung's word as gospel. If you don't have a separate peach-toned concealer for covering under-eye bags (makeup 101, y'all), Jeung says not all hope is lost: You can take a matte red-orange lipstick and mix it with your everyday concealer to neutralize your dark circles. Crazy? Yes. Will we try it? Hell yes.

#9: Get Waxed
2016-01-16-1452911124-6851212-slide9milanbrowshaping.jpg
Milani Brow Shaping Clear Wax ($5)
Waxing your lip takes on a whole new meaning when you consider this industry trick: using a clear wax brow pencil to line your lips. Yes--a brow pencil. Why? Makeup artists swear that it keeps feathering and fading at bay when your trusty lip liner is nowhere to be found. Besos.

#10: Stack Your Lashes
2016-01-16-1452911181-2513734-slide10lashes.jpg
Ardell Fashion Lashes ($3)
If you love a big, voluminous, Bardot-esque lash look, you might be tempted to look for a full, thick false lash--don't. Ariana Grande's makeup artist Daniel Chinchilla says you're much better off stacking two light, thin false lashes on top of each other. Just make sure their bands are thin, to keep things looking natural. (You can read more of his mind-blowing lash tips here.)

Each purse has a sewn-in charging dock compatible with iPhones 5, 5S, 5C, 6 and 6 Plus. When you're out and about, you can charge your phone by slipping it into the specified interior pocket (it clicks into place). Then when you're back home, simply rest your purse on its wireless charging mat. (We suggest the kitchen countertop as home base.)

Skyline Rings Allow You To Keep Your Favorite Cities At Hand

$

Do you buy a single cup of coffee and sit at a Starbucks for an insane amount of time daydreaming of Paris? Do you miss London when none of your friends want to grab a pint on a Tuesday? Do you yearn for New York when you smell the faint scent of urine first thing in the morning?

Here's something that'll make you light up like a city skyline at night.

Goldsmith Ola Shekhtman creates intricate cityscapes you can wear around your finger and sells them on her Etsy shop, Shekhtwoman. She learned the craft in 2011 while in jewelry school in St. Petersburg, Russia.

“Back then I made everything by hand,” Shekhtman told The Huffington Post. “Melting metal, rolling, sawing, soldering and polishing.”

But when Shekhtman relocated to the U.S. with her husband, cat and turtle two years ago, she didn’t have her tools. So she took 3D modeling courses in New York City, and now uses the modern technique to create her pieces.

“It gives me full freedom to create, and now I am able to turn absolutely anything I think of into jewelry.”

Growing up as a girl in Siberia, Shekhtman always dreamed of seeing the world, which, as an adult has included stops in London, Israel and most recently San Francisco -- which she has completely fallen in love with.

“We are thinking of moving to California next,” she said.

Her idea for the city skyline rings was a combination of her travel bug tendencies mingling with another inner desire.

“I always wanted to have a ring for myself with cozy houses around my finger,” she said. “So, when I was goldsmith student, I finally made that ring and gave it to a friend as a present.”

Yet, she never felt the idea was complete. She needed more on that than just humble homes -- something with a little more razzle-dazzle.

Then in 2015, she decided to make a Paris cityscape and sell it on her Etsy shop. The design was a hit.

She then added Amsterdam and New York skyline rings as well. Currently she does designs for those cities and Berlin, London, Washington D.C., Charleston, Boston, Hong Kong, Stockholm and Edinburgh.

“Now I have a list with over 50 cities I want to ‘build’ during this year,” she said.

Expect to see Seattle and Chicago designs on her site soon as well -- they’re her biggest requests. (Prices start at $69 and go from there, depending on the materials you choose.)

A Timely Guide To Throwing Away Your Makeup

Cosmetics--unlike books and photos--aren't meant to last forever. (Do you really want expired products on your face, anyway?) In the best-case scenario, they won't work as well as they once did. (Think: flaky mascara, goopy gloss or streaky foundation.) In the worst-case scenario, you could end up with an infection. (Sties, breakouts and the like.) Here, a quick guide on when everything should go in the trash.

Lisa Rinna's No-Makeup Selfie Shows She's As Fresh-Faced As Ever

Lisa Rinna is seemingly ageless, and according to a new photo on Instagram, that's true whether she's all glammed up for the "Real Housewives of Beverly Hills" or lazing makeup-free on a Sunday.

A photo posted by Lisa Rinna (@lisarinna) on

The 52-year-old actress shared an up close and personal selfie from bed simply captioned "Me. Sunday," showing no signs of heavy makeup (her famous pout, however, was present and accounted for).

Rinna is often cited as the most "real" out of all the Beverly Hills "housewives," so seeing her share a bare-faced snap is not all that surprising. We're just wondering if she was inspired by castmate Yolanda Foster's similar photo, posted the same day?

A photo posted by YOLANDA (@yolandahfoster) on

It wouldn't be "Housewives" without a little unnecessary drama, but this looks like two women enjoying a Sunday well spent to us.

What To Wear In Your Tinder Pics

It can be difficult to stand out on any dating profile. Most of the time, you're just a dude in a button up in a sea of other dudes in button ups. According to Mashable, who conducted a study of 12,000 Tinder profiles in New York City, Los Angeles and Atlanta found that most men wore similar outfits, because duh, we're men and unfortunately we don't have too many options when it comes to clothes.

Leggings are divisive. Are they pants? Should they be worn in public? This is all up for debate. But what isn't up for debate is how comfortable they are. Derek Zoolander Gives Vogue An 'MTV Cribs'-Style Tour Of His Apartment

Ben Stiller is going METHOD reprising his iconic role of international male supermodel Derek Zoolander. No, seriously, the actor and the character have become almost one and the same in our minds. He's just that good (looking).

In the latest installment of the video series "73 Questions," Vogue asks Zoolander what he knows (not much), while touring his New York apartment, complete with a floor full of gym equipment and roommate Zoe Kravitz.

A sample question?

Vogue: "What are three words to describe living in New York?"

Derek: "Hustle. Bustle. And."

Also, we're pretty sure Zoolander's pad is just a David Barton Gym. Makes sense.

54-Year-Old Pageant Grandma Hopes To Take The Crown In Her Bikini

Younger pageant queens, be ready to fight for the crown. A 54-year-old English grandmother is vying to take the top spot as she gears up for her first ever beauty pageant.

Amanda Booth, of Wiltshire, England, decided to compete in the Ms. Galaxy UK pageant after her son tragically died in a car accident in 2008.

It was after the loss that she realized she wanted to change her life.

"Life's too short. I want to do something for myself," Booth told SWNS.

The grandmother-of-five decided to apply for the pageant and was surprised when she was accepted. The Ms. Galaxy UK contest is open to unmarried women who are over age 30. At 54, Booth is the oldest contestant, a spokesperson for Galaxy Pageants UK confirmed. There are four contestants who are over 50.

"I want to prove my self-worth," Booth said. "I'm excited about the whole concept and I'll have the confidence hopefully to get up there and strut my stuff!"

"We absolutely love that age is no boundary for these women who want to compete in our pageant," Holly Pirrie, director of Galaxy Pageants UK, told The Huffington Post. "Amanda is definitely inspiring women from across the UK, and around the world, [by taking] herself out of her comfort zone and facing a new challenge, whilst pursuing a dream that she has had for many years."

Judging by the bikini pics, we don't think she has anything to worry about.

Looking good, Glam-ma!

Viral Video Reveals The Problematic Way Society Views Breasts

$

One week after a video he made about public breastfeeding video went viral, Joey Salads is back with another social experiment that looks at the problematic way people often treat nursing moms.

The "Sexy vs. Breastfeeding" experiment compares the way people react to a mom nursing her baby in public and the way they treat a model in a low-cut top. While the woman in the "sexy" outfit receives looks of approval from male passersby, the breastfeeding mom is scolded and called "disgusting."

While the reactions seem pretty staged, the message of the video is still meaningful, as women today are frequentlyshamed for nursingin public. The video received nearly 50 million views on Facebook in less than 24 hours and prompted a lot of discussion about this issue.

As commenter Natalia B. Vázquez wrote, "[The video] IS fake, but this really happens every day."

Pixelate Your Butt (And Support A Good Cause) With Computer-Inspired Panties

$
0
0

It was just a matter of time before technology influenced the style of our panties.

Thanks to designers Cesária & Sebastião, the brand Maison Pixel aims to make computer graphics sexy and wearable with its pixelated-looking underwear. Influenced by a dream that Sebastião had of women wearing pixels on their bums, Pixel Panties are nerdy and yet slightly NSFW at the same time.

Depending on what your idea of comfy is, the panties are made with comfort in mind, so they are seamless -- you don't have to worry too much about them showing through your pants.

It's hard to see this product as anything other than sexualization via video game graphics, based on the treatment of women in traditional video games. Women are prone to be objects of sexual desire in games and/or they're subject to brutal violence. Also, the working environments for video game programmers is also sexist, in that men claim adding playable women to games would be too much work.

Back to the undergarment industry, Maison Pixel's mission goes deeper than the average underwear design. "For us as a brand it's really important that we give back to the community, so the best way we've come up to do so is to hand over a dollar for every unit sold to charity," Sebastião told The Huffington Post. "We design to empower women through their beauty and sensuality," he adds, noting that at the same time the company is "fighting for a generation of strong, educated, respected and independent women." Because of this, a dollar from every sale will go toward the Malala Fund for the time being.

Charity isn't the only thing on the brand's do-good list. Maison Pixel strives to keep the manufacturing of its undies as ethical as possible. "Production wise, all of our items are produced in Portugal, in plants with no child labor," Sebastião says. Additionally, they make sure that workers are getting fair wages, exercising their rights and practicing in safe environments.

The panties are an interesting intersection of women and technology. It's hard not to think of Gamergate while looking at these garments -- the male-dominated gamer community shuts out women by discriminating against and brutally attacking females, in both real and virtual lives. These video game-esque undies surely deserve a critical eye because of the relationship between women and gaming. At the very least, though, Maison Pixel makes an effort to elevate women rather than diminish them to sexual, violence-stricken objects.

See more photos from the collection below, and consider getting yourself a pair for $19.99 on PixelPanties.com.

Seen in both New York and Paris, PJs were worn alone, accessorized with everyday pieces or mixed and matched with classic wardrobe staples. The result? Sultry, effortless looks that prove pajamas don't just belong in the bedroom.

Pajamas On The Streets

Many style-blazing celebrities have also been spotted giving the trend a try, from Selena Gomez to Kim Kardashian to Rihanna. Most wore the style in a dressy way, stepping out in a head-to-toe PJ look.

How You Can Wear PJs In Real Life

You don't have to step out in a full-on nighty to try this trend yourself. Pick one pajama-inspired piece and mix it in with your favorite essentials. Pair a pajama top with a pair of pleated trousers in the daytime. Edge up a silk wrap dress with a jet-black moto jacket in the evening. The key to nailing this trend is dressing for comfort, while keeping it simple and sleek. Shop a few of our favorite pieces below.

Dating America

In 2016 we will be electing a new President, which means for the next year, fellow liberals and I will be quoting NPR in a desperate attempt to prove that we're politically active; But come time after the elections, we will stop pretending to read the paper on our iPad's and admit that we were playing Candy Crush all along. I'm a lazy liberal atheist with an opinion which can be just as dangerous as a right-winger with a shot gun who's overprotective of his property. Except instead of shooting you, my weapon of choice is to make you listen to This American Life and discuss the downfall of the Middle Class as we drink craft beer and listen to Wilco.

Despite my lack of knowledge on every issue that the country and the world is currently up against, there is one thing that I think I'm right about, and that is being liberal. Am I saying that everyone is wrong and I'm right? Absolutely not. Am I saying that almost every controversial issue that the right opposes (including marijuana legalization, gay marriage, and abortion rights) is either now legal or strongly supported by a majority of the American population? Perhaps.

I try hard to listen to everyone's opinion and have an open and honest exchange of ideas, but will become as stubborn as a cat on a computer keyboard when religion is brought into American politics. We live in a great country where we are allowed to believe and practice whatever religion or ideal we feel connected to. Everyone has the right to believe in anything they want, just like I have the right to believe that Cheez-Its can cure depression. It has not been proven that Cheez-Its have in any way the ability to alter someones mood, but my group of my friends and I STRONGLY believe in this ideal and we hold onto to it for dear life, despite the lack of evidence. Sound like a familiar argument? It should, because I'm laying it on pretty thick. So if we can agree to leave God and Nabisco out of the decision-making process for major issues in our country we'd be happier people.

As far as picking our next President goes, I have devised a pretty fair and honest system for myself to choose the candidate I like most; I like to think of them as someone I might potentially date (bear with me on this). Sure, I'm not going to agree with every aspect of life when it comes to someone I'm dating. We'll disagree on some things, they'll disappoint me from time to time, and in the end, possibly be completely different then the person that I originally fell for. Then we part ways, I'll feel a certain level of regret and shame that I let myself fall for that type AGAIN, and then we'll run into each at Trader Joe's and try to avoid eye contact by pretending to read the ingredients on the back of a quinoa bag. Am I still talking about politics? Sure, why not.

One thing I can guarantee you is that there are VERY few people I know that will go on a date with someone who will drop racist terms then brag to their friends about it. "He was very charming! Did talk a lot about how Muslims should wear arm bands, kept talking about 'the blacks,' and some very disturbing things relating to woman and their menstrual cycles. But other than that he seems like a great person!"

Yes, these are my thoughts and opinions. Do they have any accreditation or facts to back them up? Rarely, so basically I'm FOX News. I write this not as a piece to be taken literally as news source, but from the point of view of someone still figuring out how to form my opinions and have a voice in this crazy world. My feelings of exasperated disbelief with the people I disagree with most in the world are shared by everyone, Republicans and Democrats alike. If there's one thing that we all have in common, it's fear. Fear of each other, fear of those in charge, fear of those who want to hurt us. Now, the hippy idealist in me would call for all of us to join hands, realize that our problems are petty compared to those not only in other countries, but in our homeland as well.

In the end, we have only ourselves to blame for our ignorance, our prejudices, and our fears. Now excuse me while I go eat a meatball sub and blame Obama for my Irritable Bowel Syndrome.

The Best Manicures For People With Tiny Nails

Painting your nails without getting polish all over your fingers is a struggle. Doing so when you have really tiny nails is an even bigger endeavor. But having small nail beds shouldn't discourage you from rocking a fierce mani.

Red Carpet Manicure and celebrity manicurist Elle believe it's best to keep designs for tiny nails simple and clean. "Shy away from complex nail art, as it overpowers a smaller finger/nail bed," she says.

If you understand basic color theory, then you'll understand Butter London Global Colour Ambassador Katie Jane Hughes' general rule of thumb when choosing nail colors: White can make things appear larger, and black smaller. But don't be afraid to break the rules. "It's just makeup for your nails," says Hughes. "Try stuff, see what you like. It should be fun, after all."

Read on for more tips and tricks from these nail professionals that'll help you create the illusion longer fingernails.

When shaping your nails with an emory board, be sure to mirror image the shape of your cuticle. "This always creates the strongest and most elongating, flattering shape," says Elle. FYI: Here's a handy infographic that paints a clearer picture of your cuticle and other nail anatomy.

A nude nail polish can help elongate the look of your fingers, especially if the color is matched closely to your natural skin tone. Elle's personal favorite nude is Dermelect's "A Shore Thing," a pinky, sheer beige lacquer. Not a match for you? Hughes suggests Butter London's new Sheer Wisdom Nail Tinted Moisturizer line, which comes in six shades for fair to deep complexions.

Large, stick-on accessories will overpower your nail. Instead, Hughes advises trying negative space or floating nail art. If that's too advanced for your DIY skills, she says to "try a sheer nude with a simple skinny line down the middle as it will have an elongating effect." Or Elle recommends adding a stud to one or all of your nails for an edgy look that doesn't take up too much space.

If there is not enough space for nail art, go with an ombré effect. Incorporating different nail polish shades in the same color family, Elle created this grey ombré mani on Lena Dunham.

Your Wardrobe After Breast Cancer

$

One of the major concerns that breast cancer patients face after surgery and subsequent treatment has to do with their wardrobe. Everyone has this problem whether it results from breast size changes from surgery and/or changes that occur to our bodies from chemotherapy, radiation and/or hormone therapy. And most likely, this is the last additional expense that someone needs at this time when money may be at a premium and needed for necessities and treatments and medications. So what options might someone wish to consider? More than likely, some preparations were made before surgery. Clothing that is easy to slip on and off that requires limited arm movement is always a first choice. Loose fitting items are also likely selections. These items will be of utmost importance during recovery from surgery and while additional treatment like chemo and radiation are pursued. And special attention must be given if a port is inserted.

On top of all of this, most will face some sort of weight loss or weight gain depending on various treatments and now the real work and creativity begins. If you find that your changes are not extreme enough to require major size changes, you might be able to utilize some of the basic pieces that you already own. A belt here or a scarf there can shape a look that may allow you to adapt your clothing in ways that will make it more comfortable while disguising certain issues with which you are dealing. A loose-fitting sweater over a top that has become a little snug may be a perfect solution for extra warmth. But, you may find that you are not interested or physically able to deal with this matter on top of everything else and that would be completely understandable. This is when a sister or close friend can become your best ally and I am sure that she would love to be able to help you in this way.

Adding someone else can also help in other ways as well. Perhaps your friend has things in her wardrobe that she can share with you or may know of others who can help in this way, especially if you need larger or smaller sizes. Having someone who is willing to just go through what you have and create outfits for you can be of a major help. And if you don't have anyone close by to help in this way, you might consider checking with local support organizations and enlisting their help. There are always those that want to help if they are just given the opportunity.

If you need new clothes but funds are limited, thrift stores are always a great place to check out. Items available include undergarments as well as outerwear of all sorts. Everything is freshly washed and/or cleaned before being placed on sale so this aspect need not be a concern. Most towns have a Goodwill or Salvation Army store and now more organizations like the American Cancer Society are opening outlets that are similar.

If you are not in the mood to go out to shop for clothes at this time or if you might be very self-conscious about your new physical appearance, this might be the perfect time to shop online if this is something that you have not done before. The ability to try things on at your leisure and in the privacy of your own home is a luxury that would not have been available in the not-too-distant past. However, for many, it may be exactly what is needed at this particular time.

Help is available for whatever you may need. Every person who has ever dealt with breast cancer has experienced body changes on some level so just know that you are not alone in your need to find solutions for this aspect of your physical changes. The answers are out there. All you need to do is ask the questions and/or ask for the help that you need.

Pasties and Merkins -- a History

This piece originally appeared in Quail Bell Magazine, a place for real and unreal stories from around the world.

2016-01-16-1452903292-721118-9904734.jpg

It's a given. One of the most unnecessarily awkward conversations you will have in your life takes place between the ages of 12 and 16. This sweat-inducing, one-way talk will occur on an unassuming afternoon or early evening. You will have just cleaned your plate of that last liver slab and have but one question on your mind: Where does Mom keep the extra minty toothpaste?

But approximately 0.03 seconds after you've excused yourself from the table, Dad will clear his throat and start fidgeting with his sleeves. Mom will motion toward Dad. That's when your father, normally a harmless, likable fellow, will say, "Your mother and I want to talk to you." Did they know you lied about finishing your chemistry homework? No. But they do know you've been wildly misinformed about The Birds & the Bees -- and they're about to bash every sex myth you ever learned in the schoolyard.

After Mom and Dad's polite, clinical explanations, you will flee to your room, ashamed yet still curious. There are two questions they failed to answer: 1) What the hell is a pastie? and 2) What the hell is a merkin?

Yet these are not questions any sane person asks his mother or father. These questions are best asked of bored, slightly perverted magazine writers. Thus, though it has been many a year since your bar mitzvah or quinceañera, you will at long last learn the truth about pasties and merkins.

Pasties are adhesive nipple covers often used in burlesque dancing, stripping and other forms of sensual or erotic entertainment. They popped up in the 1920s to prevent dancers from breaking anti-toplessness laws. Generally speaking, pasties are just large enough to cover the breast's areola. Like any article of clothing, pasties come in various styles, depending upon the designer's preference. Sometimes pasties have tassels. Sometimes they have sequins. Sometimes they have tassels AND sequins. Somewhere out there floating in the universe are pasties with googly-eyes and fishtails. Pasties are, after all, primarily tricks of the showgirl trade.

Pasties do have a place offstage, though. Women of all kinds of 'reputations' wear pasties under backless dresses and even T-shirts (especially sheer ones). Think of them as nipple shades. These tamer versions of pasties usually come in neutral colors like white or beige. Like a Band-Aid, you simply remove the layer of waxy paper on the back to reveal a thin layer of adhesive. Then you place the adhesive over your nipple and gently press the front side of the pastie. An instant later, bye-bye headlights! There's also such thing as pastie glue, though it's less appealing to the Average Jane. It's meant more often for higher-end, decorative pasties.

Anyone can buy pasties -- and they don't need to prove they're 18, either. Bland ones are available at most any place that sells bras, whether a department store or a lingerie boutique. Flashier ones are less readily available, though hardly rare finds. Many artists and designers sell pasties on their Etsy.com sites, for instance.

Etsy is an online compendium of precious boutiques from around the world. Most vendors display goods they handmade themselves. Fashion accessories, especially in the 'alternative' vein, definitely dominate. Pasties, then, run rampant.

As of Sept. 18, 2011, Etsy vendor Hexotica of Melbourne, Australia was toting cheery cupcake pasties in pink satin and lace. These foam "dessert boobies," as she described them, featured pink satin ribbon 'frosting' and a lace/sequin 'cup.' Hexotica advertised that she offers a white version, as well as customizations. A tiny sampling of other Etsy vendors selling pasties include Goth Fox Designs, Estro Jenn's Designs and VOLAC Designs. An Etsy search for the term 'pasties' on Sept. 24, 2011 revealed 1,462 results!

So now you have a little background on what the hoot pasties are. But what about what's down below?

Introducing...the merkin!

Merkins are pubic wigs that were originally employed by prostitutes and other promiscuous folks to conceal signs of STDs. Whether you had sores, rashes, or bald spots, your lover never had to know -- as long as you got busy in the dark or with the presence of a few petticoats. Merkins have graced genitalia since at least the early 1600s. In the 1700s, merkins were often as ornate as head wigs, with ribbon, cloth flowers and other Rococo-like details.

Don't assume merkins are relics of the past, however. Now certain screen stars use them to escape the good girl's no-no of full-frontal nudity or to give a character's appearance more historical accuracy.

For an example of the latter case, take Kate Winslet in The Reader. Since the story takes place in 1958, Winslet could not have gotten away with showing her more modern grooming. Landing strips and Brazilian waxes, though common in the Generation X/Y world, barely existed in bygone days.

Merkins, with their old-timey kitchsy reputation, can also bring humor to a movie scene. Take, for example, Heidi Klum's huge, red, fluffy merkin in Blow Dry. In Harold & Kumar Escape from Guantamo Bay, several extras wore snow cone-esque merkins in red, white and blue.

Merkins, given the West's current obsession with hair removal, don't have the same razzle-dazzle appeal of pasties. More often they're seen as funny, not sexy. That's why if you search for merkins on Etsy.com, only a couple dozen items appear. None of them are actual merkins, either. They're just novelty items poking fun at merkins. Nonetheless, certain sex shops, especially ones specializing in LGBTQ merchandise, do carry merkins. Some drag queens, for instance, like to wear merkins in order to cover their male genitalia.

Since certain regions still prevent strippers from dancing completely nude, they may wear merkins over flesh-colored panties to indulge customers. If the regional laws disallow toplessness, strippers likely wear pasties, too. As long as customers don't look too closely, they won't notice what UrbanDictionary.com calls "a toupee for the pubic area" and "nipple patches."

Imagine -- merkins and pasties working in harmony both in the distant past and not-so-far future. It's a beautiful but strange planet we inhabit.
