A bold lip is fun and makes a statement...until it starts to smudge. So how do you get it to stay put? We called on New York City celebrity makeup artist Troy Surratt to give us the scoop on how he makes a bright hue stay in place and last all night--and kiss your lip prints goodbye.

Your color won't be able to shine if it's flaking off. "Always exfoliate your lips first so they are smooth and ready to hold color," says Surratt. "I like to mix sugar and water for a quick DIY scrub in a pinch." Or you can try Fresh Sugar Lip Polish ($24; sephora.com).

Create a neutral base for your lipstick shade by applying a thin layer of your preferred foundation to lips beforehand. "This creates the best foundation--literally!--so your lip color will last," says Surratt.

Separate a two-ply tissue into two pieces. After applying your lipstick of choice (I'm wearing Clarins Rouge Eclat Lipstick in Coral Pink ($27; nordstrom.com), blot your lips with one of the tissue pieces then apply another layer of lipstick. Take the second piece of tissue and lay it on your lips while brushing an invisible setting powder--I used Milani Prep + Set + Go Transparent Face Powder ($10; walgreens.com)--on top with a fluffy brush. "The powder will absorb the excess moisture so the color won't slip around as easily," Surratt explains.

To prevent the dreaded feathering from happening, Surratt suggests using a concealer brush to line the outside of lips with concealer. This creates a wall that prevents lipstick from running away. I used the Revlon Concealer Brush ($6; amazon.com) and Make Up For Ever Ultra HD Concealer ($27; sephora.com).

We love of splurge as much as the next girl, but sometimes, the drugstore market is just as good as what's in department stores. Ahead, nine of the best drugstore anti-aging products that top dermatologists always recommend to their patients.

Neutrogena Rapid Wrinkle Repair Serum "It has retinol, which helps with fine lines and exfoliation, and it's gentle, so it won't cause the same irritation and dryness as some prescription retinoids can."--Sandra Kopp, a dermatologist at Schweiger Dermatology Group in New York City

Garnier Ultra-Lift Anti-Wrinkle Night Cream "The combination of retinol and rice protein peptides in the glycerin base work together to stimulate collagen production while hydrating your skin."--Francesca Fusco, an assistant clinical professor of dermatology at Mount Sinai School of Medicine and an assistant attending dermatologist at Mount Sinai in New York City

Olay Regenerist Regenerating Serum "It contains a peptide complex proven to stimulate collagen production."--Vivian Bucay, a dermatologist and the founder of Bucay Center for Dermatology and Aesthetics in San Antonio

RoC Retinol Correxion Deep Wrinkle Serum "A lot of my patients love this retinol. It helps to soften and smoothen skin, and fix sun damage."--Jason Emer, a cosmetic dermatologist and aesthetic surgeon in Mountain View, California

L'Oréal Paris Revitalift Triple PowerSerum
"Skin feels smoother and softer almost instantly, and very well hydrated--so much so that, depending on your skin type, there may be no need to follow with a moisturizer."--Karen Hammerman, a dermatologist with Schweiger Dermatology Group in New York City

Avène Ystheal Anti-Wrinkle Cream This cream is formulated with 0.05 percent retinaldehyde, a non-irritating form of vitamin A, which makes the formula gentle enough for sensitive skin yet still effective enough to optimize cell renewal and boost collagen and elastin production."--Jeannette Graf, a clinical assistant professor of dermatology at Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York City

Neutrogena Hydro Boost Water Gel "It's a true hydrating moisturizer with a high content of hyaluronic acid, therefore it will hold the water inside the skin, giving it a plumper, smoother appearance. It's also very well-tolerated by all types of skin."--Leyda Bowes, a dermatologist in Miami

Women's Rogaine Hair Regrowth Treatment 5% Minoxidil "Keeping a full head of hair is another way to address anti-aging."--Bucay

RapidLash Eyelash Enhancing Serum "This serum rejuvenates and transforms lashes, while also giving them a nice lift."--Fusco

3 Boring Makeup Ruts--And How To Get Out of Them

Everyone gets in makeup ruts. It's inevitable: You find a look that works on you; you master it; you start doing it...every single day. For years and years. I've seen this happen to women of all ages, even makeup artists. Some ruts are more common than others (hello, pinkish-beige lip gloss!), but every single one of them is worth reevaluating. I'm not saying your lipstick or eye shadow isn't working for you, but what feels like a risk today could be your favorite tomorrow. Of course, trying a new look is scary, but--deep breaths--we'll get through this together. Here are three makeup ruts I can help you get out of.

THE RUT: Wearing the exact same thickening black mascara since you were 17 years old.

THE FIX: Don't freak out, but I suggest giving up mascara altogether. Instead, use a lash curler--it is the single most important tool for any makeup artist in the world. You'll be shocked at how effective it is at making your eyes appear open and wider, even sexier. If you want definition on the lash line, swipe on Chanel Slate Eye Shadow as liner. And bam! Super on fleeeek.

THE RUT: Owning 12 shades of lipstick but wearing only the shiny pinkish-beige one.

THE FIX: On this one I'll let you stay in your comfort zone--sort of. You can stick with the same neutral shade, but look for it in a matte formula. It's chic and flattering and feels more modern than a superglossy version. M.A.C. Lovelorn is one of my favorites and looks beautiful on all skin tones.

THE RUT: If it's Friday night, it's black eyeliner time.

THE FIX: Aubergine, teal, sapphire...hey, come on! There's a world of color out there, and it's a million times more exciting than the black smoky effect you've been doing since college. (Personally, I love Make Up For Ever Aqua Eyes eyeliner in 12L, an awesome greenish blue.) I bet you'll think your eye color is way more vibrant once you mix a cool jewel tone into your repertoire.

Jaden Smith Shirtless In A Skirt Is A Gender-Fluid Dream Come True

Jaden Smith's new Instagram pic has got us feeling some type of way.

The former "Karate Kid," part-time philosopher and son to Will and Jada has basically been giving the middle finger to gender norms since he started wearing dresses back in 2015.

Now, a shirtless photo of Smith wearing only a black skirt, accented by bright blue nail polish and a red flower, has got our attention.

The 17-year-old captioned the photo shot by Peter Ash Lee for Vogue Korea, "Just Come Here," and he doesn't have to ask twice.

"Just Come Here"

A photo posted by Jaden Smith (@christiaingrey) on

Louis Vuitton tapped the young actor to be the face of their new womanswear campaign in January.

In a series of snaps posted on LV's creative director, Nicolas Ghesquière Instagram account, Smith rocks another skirt and a leather jacket alongside female models like it's no big deal ... because it's not, actually.

We are so on board for this gender-neutral clothing trend. Sex and gender aren't binary, so let's all stop dressing like they are.

Here's A Prom Night Game-Changer For Queer Teens Everywhere

$
0
0

Thanks to a new competition, one queer high school student will have the opportunity to receive a custom prom outfit that accurately reflects their gender expression, thereby allowing them to attend the seminal adolescent experience as their authentic self.

The contest is the brainchild of Sharpe Suiting, a queer clothing line featured in the HuffPost series "FABRICATIONS," and NiK Kacy, designer of gender-neutral footwear. Called The Love Fellowship, the project stems from the story of Claudetteia Love, a Louisiana queer teen whose school tried to ban her from wearing a tux to prom.

In response to the school, which eventually let Love attend the prom in the outfit of her choosing, Sharpe Suiting and NiK Kacy designed a custom tux and footwear for the queer teen. They even offered to throw an alternative prom, if needed. Now, the two designers want to extend that opportunity to other queer teens.

"Luckily, after an inordinate amount of press, and pressure from Love’s family and the school board, the principal backed down and Love was allowed to wear whatever formal attire she chose," Sharpe Suiting designer Leon Wu told The Huffington Post. "Hand delivering that custom Sharpe burgundy tux and matching shoes provided by NiK Kacy to Love’s house and seeing her face when she tried her prom outfit on for the first time was one of the highlights of my career so far, and it reminded me, yet again, of why I founded Sharpe in the first place."

Here is how the competition will work: Interested high school students who identify as queer have until Feb. 15, to submit a video through The Love Fellowship website that explains why freedom of gender expression as an individual is important to them. The two designers will then pick one winner to receive a custom prom outfit and will share several of their other favorite entries on their social media channels, as well.

The pair of designers hope to make The Love Fellowship an annual project to help queer teens to express themselves fully at what many people consider one of the landmark moments of a traditional high school experience.

"High school is a time in a person’s life when they start exploring who they are going to be and how they are going to express themselves," Wu continued. "How are they seen in the world? Will the world accept them for who they are?... Forcing youth to conform to rigid male-female gender expressions that don’t accurately reflect their identities nullifies this celebration. It sends a clear message that those students who don’t fit cleanly into arbitrary boxes are not worth celebrating, nor should even be included, which can cause a lasting impression throughout the rest of their lives. We should be striving to nurture individuality and creativity, and understand that each expression of self is valid."

Interested in entering the competition? Head over to The Love Fellowship website to submit your video and stay tuned to see which high school student wins the opportunity to have their dream outfit designed by NiK Kacy and Sharpe Suiting.

Woman Unintentionally Matches Her Shirt To A Hotel Wall

Every actress' red carpet nightmare -- wearing the same thing as someone else -- just *kind of* became a reality for one woman.

Reddit user Wickensworth posted a photo of a friend Monday who he said "checked into a random hotel" only to realize she was wearing the same shirt as... its walls.

The matching colors, the dividing stripe -- it's undeniably uncanny. All she needs to do is stand in front of the wall and voila, we have an exact recreation of  that scene from "Garden State."

We were unable to reach the friend in question for more context, so our pressing questions -- like the name of this fashionable hotel or who makes the shirt -- unfortunately remain unanswered. One we can still ask, however, is... who wore it best?

Bethenny Frankel Does Not Look Like This Anymore

Black hair is, like, sooooo 2008.

Bethenny Frankel debuted a shockingly red new 'do at the launch of Skinnygirl Candy in New York on Tuesday (Yes, it's good. We tried it). The reality star-turned-businesswoman is well-known for her raven locks, but decided to switch it up to promote her "guilt-free" new candy line.

"I wanted to do it, and [Skinnygirl Candy] was a great excuse," she told The Huffington Post. "It's whimsical, fun and the color of my logo!"

The new hair could (hopefully?) be a wig, but judge for yourself below.

(Side note: Is this not the exact same color Syndey Bristow rocked in the "Alias" pilot?)

Fellow "Real Housewives of New York" star Carole Radziwill came out to support Frankel (wearing some amazing purple gloves, BTW) for the candy bonanza event held at Dylan's Candy Bar.

The new season of "Housewives" has yet to be announced, but we already know that the series will be down two women -- Heather Thompson and Kristen Taekman will not be returning for the show's eighth season

"The women on the 'Housewives' that I work with, I really like and respect," Frankel told us about the upcoming season. "It's an interesting group and I've come to really rely and count on a lot of them."

Are we seriously on the eighth season of "RHONY"? It seems like only yesterday Bethenny was screaming at Kelly Bensimon on Scary Island, "GO TO SLEEP. GO TO SLEEP. YOU'RE CRAZY."

If the idea of buying a box of chocolates and one-dozen roses sounds so cliché to you, here are 10 Valentine's Day dating ideas to enjoy with your date, that won't break the bank.

Plus, Valentine's is on a three-day weekend, so you can enjoy these activities, regardless of your relationship status over the period of almost 100 hours.

10 Out-of-the-Box Fun and Creative Valentine's Day Date Ideas

1. Take a Dance Class. Dancing to tango music can be very romantic. Dress up for the occasion and find a class near you. If tango isn't your style, try salsa or hip-hop as an alternative. It will get your body moving and can get you in the mood for a romantic and memorable evening. Even if you can't find a class anywhere, take your Valentine dancing at a local spot with live music anyway!

2. Ride the Ferris Wheel. There's something romantic about riding the Ferris wheel, especially when it stops and you're feeling like you're on top of the world. Remember to kiss your Valentine when you're staring at the stars together. Then hold your date tight as you ride the roller coaster together. Show them you're there to protect him or her. Snap some photos and post them on Instagram (with permission from your date).

3. Skate Away. Whether it's ice-skating or roller-skating, take your Valentine to the closest rink in town. You'll find yourselves reminiscing about your childhood memories, while you get a little physical activity. Remember to catch her if she falls!

4. Create a Digital Scavenger Hunt. We know you're attached to your mobile phones and tablets (it's okay, so are we), so create a little mystery with your very own personalized scavenger hunt. Not sure where to start? Begin the day with a "Happy Valentine's Day" text and send the first clue. When she arrives at the destination, send her a second clue requesting a Skype or FaceTime chat where you can wish each other a Happy Valentine's Day, video style. Third, send another text message on where you'd like her to go next. Have her pampered with a manicure or pedicure to get ready for your big date night, or even send her to a spa for a relaxing massage. Fourth, at the end of the day, post a lovey picture of the two of you on her Facebook page for her and her friends to 'like.' Finally, send her a digital invitation with the exact location for your Valentine's date. Remember to take photos along the way and share them on all of your social media accounts so everyone can see how you celebrated with you love.

5. Go to a Wine Tasting. Many local wine bars allow you to stop by and taste several options before deciding on your favorite selection. Take your date to a bar known for their wine tastings, where you both can get a wine card for samples and compare notes. At the end of the night, buy him or her their new favorite bottle for the two of you to share on another date night.

tumblr_n5v8vbNYwm1rhhql5o1_500

6. Enjoy In-Room Dining. If you've waited until the last minute and realize that your date's favorite restaurant is already booked, no need to fret! Pretend you're on vacation and opt for an in-room dining alternative. You can take care of the appetizers and main course, but ask your date for input on the dessert the menu. Create great ambiance with candles, music, rose petals, and perhaps a bouquet of red tulips, if roses aren't in your budget. After that romantic dinner, there's not need to get a room. You're already there.

7. Book His-and-Her Massages. Having warm oil massaged into your body is surely a treat. If your relationship hasn't moved in that direction yet, book Swedish massages for the two of you in separate rooms, so you both can enjoy the experience and compare notes afterwards and say hello to relaxation.

8. Take a Cooking Class. Guys actually enjoy being creative in the kitchen. It helps with relaxation, so take him to a cooking class, where the two of you can whip up a fancy meal. Find a place to go for dessert together, with your menus in hand and order chocolate. It's the ultimate aphrodisiac.

tumblr_n4buk7ceTO1topkkpo1_500

9. Make it About Music. There's something uber romantic about sharing music with the one you love (or like). Plus, Shakespeare said, "If music be the food of love, play on." Make your Valentine's a night of music. Buy your Valentine a music CD or create a playlist, then stay in and watch a recorded concert on TV. Download a mobile app where you can name that tune and see who wins.Make a music playlist for him or her as a gift, then go out to hear some live music together. If your date's favorite band might be playing in the near future, surprise them and pick up some tickets as a gift. If the show is months away, watch some live concerts on TV together and download some music to listen to together, so you can get pumped for your upcoming concert date.

10. Go to a Fortune Teller or Psychic. He love me, he loves me not? Stop by a fortune teller or card reader with your Valentine to see what the future will hold. Don't worry, you don't need to kiss-and-tell after your turn.

P.S. Take your profile down before Valentine's Day. It's a leap of good faith that will help you have a Happy Valentine's Day.

How will you be celebrating Valentine's Day this year?

Paying It Forward One Design At A Time

2016-01-17-1453067350-8477367-BritiniatUxibal.jpg

Britini Port is the founder of Uxibal, "a philanthropic lifestyle brand" located in Antigua, Guatemala. Port uses her own unique designs to create an empowering mission for the women of Guatemala. Uxibal is Mayan for "sister". Her business model is inspired by the desire to create products for women that in turn supports them with education and work experience.

Her passion for helping women in rural Guatemala began while working there in the Peace Corps in 2010. After seeing the struggles by many Guatemalan people, women in particular, she saw an opportunity to have a positive impact on their lives.

In 2012 she began designing shoes and partnered with a local boot-maker to create their first signature leather & textile boots. The handmade and traditional processes allow Uxibal to provide new opportunities for struggling artisans. The company is preserving traditional weaving patterns and in turn shares the Mayan culture with the world.

Uxibal's products are made with care in-house. The team uses sustainable fabrics that are handwoven by a team of female artisan weavers. Locally sourced materials ensure a high-quality finished product. In line with their mission to have a meaningful social impact in Guatemala, they have partnered with non-profit organizations they are proud to recognize and support.

A few words from Founder & Designer Britini Port:

What has been your biggest challenge in starting your own company?

One of our biggest challenges was accessing the quality materials we needed to create a superior product. We've become creative in figuring out ways to use local materials in different ways- one way we do this is in our packaging. Instead of importing shoe boxes from China, we use handwoven baskets made in Guatemala and recycled textile bags to pack our shoes. They are unique and reusable too!

What advice would you tell someone who was starting their own company, today?

As a business owner, there are many little things you have to think about on a day-to-day basis and it can be overwhelming. Setting short-term goals for your company is a good way to stay motivated and keep your team moving forward. There will always be more you can do. Take the time to celebrate your achievements along the way.

Who is your biggest role model?

I'm really inspired by the artisans I work with. Many of the women and men we employ come from backgrounds of extreme poverty, have little formal education, and often face discrimination in Guatemala because of their indigenous roots. What motivates me at the end of the day is seeing the passion in their work and their desire to create a better life for themselves and their families.

Hilary Duff was a red carpet mainstay during her Lizzie McGuire days, but since her show ended, we haven't seen enough of the star ... until last year.

Thanks to Duff's new show "Younger, we've been seeing her everywhere and couldn't help but notice how much she has grown up since her Disney days. The actress has traded in her belly-bearing tops, low-slung jeans and Coach bucket hats for sleek dresses, power suits and pastel hair. In fact, we think it's safe to say this lady has become quite the style maven.

Check out Duff's style transformation from when she first came on the scene in 2001, up through today. Her fashion transformation is what dreams are made of.

7 Shoe Shopping Rules That Every Woman Should Know

$
0
0
As a little girl I was entranced by the thought of Cinderella placing her demure foot into that glass slipper insuring that Prince Charming would be hers. My love affair with shoes started with that fairy tale. Shoes have always been the finishing touch to a polished look and now more than ever the choices are astounding.

Sitting in a shoe salon the other day one of my clients commented that she has never been intimidated by trying on shoes. When she has to "Size Up" in her clothing she gets depressed. When she has to take a larger size in a pair of shoes it never bothers her! Shoe shopping is a joy for her because a larger size means nothing to her psyche.

Over the years there has been a focus on the shoe industry. Sarah Jessica Parker loved her "Manolos" in " Sex and The City." There is a definite psychology behind this "Shoe Business" so let's take a look at some of the ways we can add that all important accessory to enhance our confidence and outer image.

Jeanne went shopping with me and went crazy over a pair of black boots. They only had a size 7 and she wore a size 8. After pushing and pulling her foot eventually went into place. She stood and limped around the department. She was admiring herself in the mirror. I asked if the boots were hurting her and the limp was my answer. The 50 percent off on the ticket sealed the deal. She turned to me and smiled and exclaimed " My feet always shrink in the winter freezing weather!" "You live in Miami and there is no winter!" I smiled. One year later the boots took a trip to a nearby consignment store. Have you ever purchased for price or the love of a look and tossed comfort and lifestyle needs out the store door?

Cynthia called me to her closet one day last fall. She was having trouble putting her outfits together. After reviewing her options I realized that her clothing was not the problem. Her clothes were selected for the classic persona she enjoyed. Her "Shoe Hobby" led her to splurging on very dramatic pairs that did not compliment or complete her wardrobe options. After pointing out the solution she admitted that they were all exciting to look at but not to wear. A trip to a local department store shoe department solved her challenge. A few pairs that accessorized her closet and her lifestyle eased her stress of dress. Have you ever impulsed on a Cinderella accessory that never saw the light of day? Do you have trouble putting your options together with the right shoe, handbag or jewelry? At the beginning of the season pull together some clothing options complete with all the right accessories. Take a picture. Create a fashion catalog with your picture on the cover.

Here are my seven shoe shopping tips!

1. Never buy shoes in the morning. Your reality size occurs later in the day.
2. Make sure the shoes you select compliment a wide variety of your closet options.
3. When you see a sale sign ask yourself if you would pay regular price for this pair.
4. Review your current shoe wardrobe before shopping.
5. Sizing up a half size will insure comfort.
6. If you find a designer that provides style and comfort, select a second pair by them.
7. Select a heel height that gives you safety and style in that selected pair.

So my modern day Cinderella ... If the shoe fits ... buy it!

Look to the Past for Great Bob Hairstyles Now

$
0
0
Bobs are trending big-time right now in every way, shape and form... no exaggeration!

They are the hot style, and the really fun thing about the bob is that it doesn't have to be that traditional bob that is perfectly undercut with the cups just under the chin.

Let's take a look back, keeping in mind that any of these styles work right now:

Let's begin with the 1920s through the '40s. Bobs were cut right at the chin or just below and the hair was styled in horizontal waves or in a finger wave pattern. These are making a huge comeback with beautiful examples on recent red carpets.

Then we move into the '60s bob, with the famous Vidal Sassoon styles, followed to this day by so many stylists. He is pure legend in my mind! His bobs were cut to perfection. He reinvented the bobs. He cut them in more geometric styles, gave them lots of movement. It didn't matter what you did, the hair always fell back into its original form, framing the face to perfection.

Into the '80s and '90s, bobs were getting into more layered looks, including shattered layers and longer layers with lots of texture and movement. The geometric, structural styles were mostly gone. Sometimes the ends were flipped up to give it a modern edge.

Then we move into the 2000 generation. We start seeing a lot of A line bobs, where the back was cut shorter and then graduating substantially longer towards the sides and front. This can be done subtly or dramatically.

Stacked Bobs became popular, too, with the back cut shorter with the layers graduated up the back to give it a 'stacked' look.

The lob is a bob, but a bit longer, with the back brushing the top of the shoulders and typically going longer toward the front.

Here we are in 2016 and "guess what?" Every single bob that I just wrote about is HOT right now, every generation from the '20s to the '40s and '60s. We're seeing them all on magazine covers and on the stages at major award shows.

From the rocker, scrunched-up air-dry look to the finger waves, the bob isn't going away anytime soon. One piece of advice: You absolutely need to get with your salon professional and discuss what length and style of bob fits your facial structure. Almost certainly, more than one style will work, but the wrong style will be a problem.

11 Women Get Refreshingly Real About Finding Jeans That Fit Their Bodies

Jeans are a struggle. Period.

Whether you've got a big butt, flat butt, wide hips or barely any hips at all, all women face challenges when shopping for denim. But no matter your size or shape, everyone wants to feel confident in their jeans.

For some god awful reason, we only see one specific body type represented in ads, commercials and online. But news flash, there are countless women who don't look that.

To that end, we asked 11 ladies to strike a pose in their favorite jeans and give us some no bullshit advice on finding the right pair for their beautifully unique bodies. Here's what they had to say:

Let me break this down for you: I'm 5'10, have big hips, thick thighs and a bubble butt. Finding jeans that fit me perfectly is on par with slamming my forehead into a brick wall -- it's painful and frustrating. I found this pair of legging jeans from Zara by accident and they do everything I need them to do. They hug my curves in a way that covers what needs to be covered while also still showing that I have a shape. I love the true blue wash and the length is A+ for taller girls."
Jenna

I'm tall and thin, but I've got a little bit of booty. One styling trick that I use to create the illusion of a curvier figure is wearing my tops tucked in high-rise denim with whisker detailing right at the hips. I absolutely can't get enough of this light wash pair I discovered at Aritzia! They're extremely long and extremely comfortable."
Dana

Shop the look: The Casting Super High-Rise Skinny, $59; Other flattering options: Rag & Bone The High Rise Skinny, $2107 For All Mankind Dojo Tailorless Distress Flared Jeans, $198.

I know the jegging/jean debate is real, but I've found a jean with some stretch is the best fit for me, so jeggings it is! I've always struggled finding a pair that fits my wide hips without being too big in the waist, but high-waist has solved that problem for me. Not to mention, a higher waist draws attention away from my hips and toward my narrow waist."
Katelyn

At 5'11", I have a very hard time finding denim that is long enough. Usually I just settle for a cropped style, but there are a few brands that make jeans with long legs in mind. My favorite pair are these ones from MiH. They are long enough to wear with boots, sandals and sneakers and come in a bunch of different washes."
Michelle

Shop the look: MiH Daily Jeans, $100; Other flattering options; Frame Forever Karlie Tall Skinny Jeans, $209ASOS Tall Ridley Skinny, $48.

I rarely have to hem my jeans because I tend to purchase skinny jeans that fall right at the ankle or a bit below. As much as I love boyfriend and wider leg styles, they don't seem to work on my frame. Most of my pants are solid, dark colors, so this destroyed, light wash pair is an anomaly in my closet. I love them because they're edgy, but I can still wear them with pretty much any top for any season."
Kate

Having love handles just means there's more me to look fabulous. I adore a great pair of flares or bootcut jeans because they add balance to my rounder midsection. And it doesn't hurt that the '70s are totally on trend right now -- but really never go out of style. I also make sure the waist of the jeans is a little roomier so that they don't cut into my skin and accentuate those 'lovely' handles of mine."
Julee

The luxury of having curves is that you know you've found the perfect pair of jeans when they easily slide up over your thighs, hips and up to your waist. I tend to look for things that taper at the bottom, because even the slightest flare makes me uncomfortable. I like simple dark washes because I feel like darker looks better and also accentuates my hips in a nice way. Also, this might be controversial, but I'm so down with the high rise cut because they let shirts flow freely in my outfits, and since I don't do super tight jeans, they don't crush my organs."
Chanel

Shop the look: Authentic 1969 True Skinny Jeans; Other flattering options: Torrid Skinny Jeans, $58Forever21 Plus Size Classic Wash Jeans, $12.

Being a shorter woman with a big butt can definitely make it hard to find jeans that fit. It's hard to find pants that fit my butt and legs, and also don't expose my booty whenever I sit down. I always look for either high rise jeans or jeans that are a bit higher-rise in the back than they are in the front. These Guess jeans show off my butt while also fitting my legs. Other types of jeans that fit my body type well are Gap, these specific Levi's jeans and really any Citizens of Humanity jeans.
Alanna

I've experimented with almost every single style of jeans, and can now confirm that flat butts need skinny jeans, so peoples' eyes are drawn more toward your legs than to your butt (or lack thereof). At 5'4", I also like to go for ankle-grazing jeans to make my legs look a little longer. I tend to go for plain black jeans or ones with an interesting style or pattern -- the more you can distract people, the better! Oh, and never wear leggings -- they can make your butt look non-existent."
Alex

I'm really proud of my calves -- they have always been strong and prominent, but they have also always given me issues, whether it be in fitting into jeans, boots, etc. I remedy that with loose fitting boyfriend styles that are flattering up top and forgiving on the bottom. I especially love this pair from MiH. Mine have funky roping detail, but their Boyish Jean offers the same type of fit. As for shoes, I find wearing a shorter bootie fits underneath the cuff and looks great with the jeans."
Jamie

Shop a similar look: MiH Boyish Jeans, $235Other flattering options: Madewell The Slim Boyjean, $128Levi's Marker Boyfriend Jeans, $178

"I'm a tall, curvy girl, so I look for long jeans that hug my legs and butt perfectly without riding down throughout the day. That's kind of hard since there's a big difference between the inches in my waist and my hips, but I never settle for less when it comes to denim. High-waisted jeans are my fave but I have a soft spot for a good pair of tall, skinny Levi's."
Taryn

The Unspoken Beauty Of Dancers With Tattoos

$

Before photographer Travis Magee devoted himself to his camera, he toured the world as a modern dancer. He hasn't been able to shake his fascination with dancers' physiques -- particularly those that have been inked up -- since.

"The dancers' bodies are their canvas and very often they must perform with minimal clothing," Magee explained to The Huffington Post. "I’ve always been fascinated with the dancer who chooses to tattoo his or her body. It is unique, daring, and the first thing that the audience will notice when they first step out onstage."

Magee's obsession soon became an inspiration, as the artist set out to combine his interests in body ink, movement and photography in one epic photo series. The resulting images feature partially nude bodies entwined beyond recognition, with colorful tattoos seeming to pass from one body to another.

Magee had not met any of his subjects prior to shooting, nor had they met each other, and trust was a crucial factor in the images' success.

"It was important to me that the tattoos appeared to flow seamlessly together," Magee added. "I wanted the images of their flowers and vines to connect with one another. This way the dancers were not only connected through their partnering and movement, but also through the designs on their bodies."

Of course, many dancers choose not to have tattoos, particularly those who practice classical ballet. "In classical ballet it is all about the line," Rafael Bonachela, director of the Sydney Dance Company, explained to The Australian. "You probably can't even have a suntan, and if you're supposed to be a swan you can't have a great tattoo across your chest."

However, as tattoos become less and less taboo outside of the dance world, more and more dancers, from the Bangarra Dance Theatre to ballet icons like Sergei Polunin, are choosing to adorn their body with art that is as expressive as choreography.

If you'd like to see Polunin's tattoos in action, check out his performance for Hozier's video "Take Me to Church," and prepare to be floored. For more on Magee, check out his portfolio.

Here's The Jewelry Every Woman Should Own Beyond The Diamond Necklace

$

Diamonds might be a girl’s best friend, but a gold statement necklace is her trusty wingwoman, pulling together any outfit in the snap of a clasp. Americans spent an estimated $4.8 billion on jewelry for Valentine’s Day in 2015, much of it toward delicate jewels and romantic diamonds that aren’t exactly everyday-style-friendly. So if your S.O. is a little less Marilyn Monroe and a little more Ingrid Bergman, then diamonds might not be the way to her heart this Valentine’s Day.

Lucky for you, we’ve partnered with eBay to help you score the perfect bling for every kind of jewelry wearer out there, from those who keep it super simple, to those who love to go big and bold.

jewelry
Simple and basic. Keep those buzzwords in mind if you’re shopping for someone who doesn’t have (or usually wear) any jewelry. Think unobtrusive, barely-there pieces, like understated studs or a lightweight unisex watch.

jewelry
This jewelry wearer is ruthless in her hunt for of-the-moment accessories. She’s not loyal to one style or look, instead floating from trend to trend, the envy of “It Girls” everywhere. So, before you settle on something timeless like a locket or diamond studs, look to the runways for inspiration. The hottest jewelry trends of 2016 are shoulder dusters, chokers and chains. (The ’90s are back, haven’t you heard?)

jewelry
This gal wears the same jewelry for long periods of time. (We’re talking sleeping, exercising and, yes, even showering in the same pieces day in and day out.) That’s why comfort, durability and versatility are key if you’re shopping for an “I-live-in-my-jewelry” type, like an initial letter necklace with a thin chain or a delicate ring.

Tip: Avoid nickel and nickel blends, which can rust and cause skin irritation, and instead consider something more durable like sterling silver or 14-karat gold.

jewelry
If your special someone fancies herself a regular Iris Apfel, consider the allure of mix-and-match jewelry. Stacking bracelets, layered rings, and even mixed gold and silver pieces are the perfect accessories for the lady who likes to stand out.

jewelry
If you’re shopping for the kind of woman who bought herself a right-hand ring, chances are she’d prefer jewelry with more of a statement behind it than your run-of-the-mill statement necklace. Think funky accent pieces like knuckle rings, ear cuffs or statement rings.

jewelry
It’s nice having someone to rely on. But having a backup necklace you can always turn to in moments of fashion desperation? Some might say that’s even better. For your S.O. who loves versatile jewelry that can top off every look, the long bar necklace is the way to go.

Let eBay help you score the perfect jewelry for your special someone this Valentine’s Day.

Crash Survivor Makes Back Brace Incognito, Turns It Into Steampunk Armor

A teen from Charlotte, North Carolina, isn’t letting a back brace grind her gears.

Madelaine Cable got into a car accident that left her with a fractured T12, in November. She had emergency spinal fusion surgery, and after was told she had to wear a back brace for the next couple of months, all day long, in order for it to heal properly.

But instead of hiding away until the brace was off, the 17-year-old decided she wanted to be perceived as the survivor she was.

So she transformed her bulky brace into badass steampunk armor.

“I really hated how bland the brace looked,” Cable told The Huffington Post. “People would stare and give weird looks. I felt ashamed of it. I wanted to make it something fun that I'd enjoy wearing and feel proud of instead of embarrassed by.”

Cable and her friend Sarah Chacko, 19, share a love of all things steampunk -- a retro-tech style -- and Chacko, just happens to have a little copper and rust running through her veins.

“I'd steampunked other things, like Nerf guns, in the past,” Chacko told HuffPost. “And when I saw the different rivets and buckles on the brace, I thought, ‘Yeah, we could steampunk that!’”

Chacko came over to Cables with a basketful of materials like metallic spray paint, metal framing trim, plastic gear stencil, metal appliques, acrylic paint and “Sarah's trusty glue gun” to help put the apparatus of awesome together.

Five hours later, the girls were proud of what they created -- it looked like a beautiful chest armor. They even decided to share pictures of their cool collaboration with the steampunk-loving site, Epbot.

“[To me] it symbolizes the battle I'm fighting while going through this,” Cable said. “I'm a warrior.”

Currently, Cable is totally conquering Battle Back Brace.

Her doctors were very happy with her progress at her post-surgical appointment. She is starting physical therapy and now gets to spend a few hours out of her brace every day. She may even be able to wave goodbye to the brace altogether in another four weeks or so.

But for the time being, Cable seems at peace with her brace – and even finds it empowering.

“People are initiating conversation instead of just staring,” Cable’s mom, Linda, told HuffPost. “She feels like they see her, and not just her injury.”

Breathtaking Photos Show The Undeniable Beauty Of Freckles

2016-01-28-1454003589-415050-untitled20.jpg

In 2012, photographer Brock Elbank was playing in a weekend-league football match in Sydney when a spectator caught his eye. It was his teammate's son, Eddie, 10 at the time, with "an incredible face full of freckles, like I'd never seen before," he says. (This was hardly the first time Elbank had found himself drawn to a quirky, distinctive facial feature; he's also shot scores of bewhiskered men for his #Beard installation.) With permission from Eddie's father, Elbank had the young lad sit for a portrait, and the session touched off what he calls an obsession with freckles.

He has since shot more than 90 portraits for his new #Freckles series, from women whose shoulders and cheeks are just dusted with dots to a nose-pierced gentleman with freckles traipsing over his eyelids, across his lips, and everywhere in-between. His subjects, who hail from Britain, Cambodia, Switzerland, Italy, Norway, Sweden, Germany, Kuwait, Japan, the U.S., and more countries, come in all ages, sizes, and ethnicities, with one thing in common.

Make that a few thousand things. Recent coverage of #Freckles made the project go viral, and Elbank has been inundated with messages from freckled folks the world over -- more than 1,100 emails this past week alone, not to mention countless messages on Facebook, Tumblr, and Instagram.

While the series has garnered much support ("Stunning!"; "Makes me wish I had even more freckles!"; "As I look through your pictures, I am reminded of my mom saying my freckles are angel kisses. I feel that way when I look at the people you photograph."), Elbank says there is a darker side to the collection. "99% of these individuals have all suffered some sort of teasing, bullying, or verbal abuse," Elbank, now U.K.-based, says. "People can be so narrow-minded and cruel. Every one of us is the same. Just because some are visually different shouldn't mean they get a rough time at school and from society."

Potential models are invited to mail a color photograph of themselves to studio@mrelbank.com. Here, we share images from his diverse portfolio.

2016-01-28-1454003713-7664393-image9.jpg

Tsiu-Kim is half-Malaysian and half-Scottish, and the lead singer of an indie-rock band in London. She is a model who does not hide her freckles.

Viewers all around the world have commented on Elbank's work. Wrote one Israeli Instagrammer -- in apparent solidarity: נמשים ליא ("I have a freckle.")

2016-01-28-1454003782-759047-image10.jpg

It's quite rare to see an infant with freckles. But as a baby grows into a child and his or her skin is exposed to UV light, the body begins producing melanocytes (pigment-producing cells in the skin). If a youngster is genetically predisposed toward freckles, his or her melanocytes may become darker and proliferate, resulting in freckles.

2016-01-28-1454004059-2258921-image11.jpg

Many of Elbank's subjects are heavily freckled. "The heavier, the better in my opinion," he says. Each portrait requires four to seven hours of work.

"The freckles are all theirs and not added in any way; what would be the point? One French paper interviewed me in October and had a skin specialist view the work, who said it was fake. As I said, 'What would be the point of documenting freckles if the subjects didn't have freckles?' That's a lot of post-production [work]," says Elbank.

2016-01-28-1454004095-5390959-image12.jpg

Mania Mackowski's curves net her work as a plus-sized model, but it's what's going on above her neck, along with the rest of her stunning features, that caught Elbank's attention.

One of his goals in his work, in fact, is to feature a far-reaching global mix of individuals. (He told The Guardian, "Whatever I do in the next five or 10 years, I want it to have diversity -- Japanese, African, African-Caribbean, or Peruvian. I'm looking for an Irish-Peruvian-Caribbean!")

The Best Shampoo For Your Hair Type

2016-01-28-1454006643-5421161-unnamed1.jpg

The importance of shampooing has been drilled into our brains since we were little. Having grease and grime on our scalps isn't very appealing, after all. What our moms likely didn't tell us? Which shampoo -- of the many options -- we should be using.

Just like not all conditioners are created equal, shampoos differ widely. While some things may be obvious (if your hair is fine and straight, don't use a product made for thick, curly strands), we also understand that the countless choices can be overwhelming.

So, we've consulted some of the top hair insiders in the biz on which cleanser is best for which tress type. Click through to see their picks for long, short, and everything in-between. Because, visiting the beauty aisle shouldn't give you a mini panic attack.

Textured

If you're looking for a clarifying shampoo for your textured strands, try Kinky-Curly Come Clean Shampoo, which is good to use just once every couple of weeks to get rid of product buildup. This clarifier will quickly and easily clean out all of that extra product. Don't overdo it, though, or it will strip your strands of the natural oils they need.

2016-01-28-1454006719-7064798-image3.jpg

Kinky-Curly Come Clean Shampoo, $12.49, available at Walgreens.

Short Hair

Hairstylist Ryan Richman recommends that women with shorter strands not wash their hair every day. But, he also understands that product buildup and natural oils accumulate much faster in this hair type. The solution: "Choose a shampoo that will cleanse without stripping your hair of natural oils [or leaving] your scalp feeling dry," he says. "Dove Daily Moisture is great for everyday use. It cleanses hair without stripping, while leaving it soft and smooth."

2016-01-28-1454007079-239188-image.jpg

For those "short" on time, he also recommends a dry shampoo, like Dove's Refresh+Care. "With a few sprays, you can refresh your look and absorb product and oil buildup, leaving hair feeling clean with a freshly washed scent."

Dove Daily Moisture Therapy Shampoo, $3.48, available at Walmart.

Long Hair

The key to finding a great shampoo for longer hair is a product that will leave it feeling light as a feather (or close to it). Richman swears by Kérastase's Cristalliste, because it's silicone-free and "leaves lengthy hair looking smooth and beautiful without [weighing] it down."

2016-01-28-1454006868-6544639-image1.jpg

Kérastase Cristalliste Bain Cristal Thick Shampoo, $39, available at Kérastase.

Fine Hair

The struggle here often lies in lack of body and greasiness. Hairstylist Ryan Trygstad recommends a volumizing shampoo, like Shu Uemura's, which, he says, "Does a great job [at] keeping the hair free of oil and product buildup." If you're looking for a less expensive option, he suggests checking out Neutrogena's Anti-Residue Shampoo.

The Winter Bike Gear You Need For That Long, Cold Commute

$
0
0

Your job doesn't care if it's winter. You still have to get to work.

And the 904,463 people who commute by bike in the U.S. know it can sure get cold out there.

We asked riding experts around the country, from ride leaders to bike mechanics, about their must-have winter gear they use to stay warm on that cold commute (hint: it was mostly a jacket or gloves, duh).

Layers Are Key:

For Will Alvarado, a manager at Toga Bikes in New York City, his first step is to layer on a wool or synthetic base layer and an outer layer that blocks wind and moisture. "Look for synthetic fabric," he said, which is "really popular these days because they do a really good job of drying really quickly, [and synthetics are] more affordable than wool."

He likes Specialized's base layers and Deflect jacket ($100).

Feliciano Vera, the floor lead at Rapha Cycle Club in San Francisco, says he rides about six times a week, whether it's cold outside or not. He recommends Rapha's Pro Team jacket ($290), a softshell designed to feel like a jersey, because of its waterproof front and breathable back which allows it to keep you both warm and cool in a "pretty broad temperature range. I wear it with a base layer in mid-50s, or a long sleeve base layer down to temps in the teens," he said. "It's something I wear four or five times a week."

Gloves Are Vital:

Melinda Musser, communications director for the non-profit Community Cycling Center in Portland, Oregon (which helps Portlanders get into cycling and stay safe), recommends a set of gloves from Shower Pass.

The Crosspoint Wind Glove ($45), made with three-layer windproof, waterproof and breathable technology, is a "very breathable glove that is not too hot or too cold for the Pacific Northwest climate," she told HuffPost. "What we like about this glove is that it's water resistant and padded just enough to allow the rider to maintain good dexterity while gripping the handlebars."

Randall Huskamp, who leads riding groups in Boston every weekend through the harsh winter, makes a good point: "You ask about one piece of go-to winter clothing, but you must understand that it really takes a set of clothing if you bike when it is below zero, which can happen," he told HuffPost.

Huskamp layers heavily, on his torso and legs, but for his hands, he likes mittens from Black Diamond ($79.95), which "give my hands plenty of room for a small glove and hand warmers. As temps warm I use gloves as the mittens get way too warm," he said.

Todd Atkins, VP of Boulder Cycling Club, put gloves at the top of his list: "Your face can be so frozen you can't talk, your feet can be so cold you can't feel the pedals but if your fingers get so cold you can't operate your brakes, that's a serious problem and a safety risk," he said.

"You may not realize it, but you rely on the tactile feedback of your brake levers to properly control your brakes. When your fingers get that cold, you not only lose that feedback, but your grip and hand strength are compromised and you lose a lot of coordination in your fingers. It also burns like hell when you finally get blood flowing again."

And Fenders Are A Bike's Best Friend:

"Wintertime is real rough on your bike, Alexi Dolloff-Brammer at Ace Wheelworks near Boston, said. He won't ride without a set of fenders and recommends those from Planet Bike.

Because they go over your wheels, they protect both you and your bike from all the black slush and sludge that puddles up in the streets. That nasty stuff, made up of melted snow, oil and grit from the road, doesn't just stain your clothes, but it can mess up your bike's drivetrain and breaks, which can become a serious threat to you and others.

"If you get full-coverage fenders that wrap around your wheel, it channels the slush forward and down in the channel and forces it out of the way so it keeps it out of your chain, cogs and breaks, which makes these last longer," he said.
