At New York's Frigid Fashion Week, No One Is Dressing Appropriately For The Weather

In case you're weren't in NYC this weekend, you should know that it was one of the coldest weekends on record. Like really cold. Like -1 degree Fahrenheit without the wind chill, cold. And this weekend also happened to be New York Fashion Week -- aka the few days in which people get dressed to the nines in hopes of being snapped by a street style photographer. And while there may have been a polar vortex in the city, the fashion crowd didn't let a little arctic air change their outfit plans.

At NYFW, we saw actors in short-sleeved dresses, editors in crop tops and bloggers in bare legs. And we have to give these ladies props, because we were outside in three parkas, fleece pants and snow boots. Check out some of the i̶n̶s̶a̶n̶e̶ brave getups we saw on the NYFW streets :

14 Items In Your Bathroom That Have Probably Already Expired

$

0

If you're obsessed with staying neat like us, there's almost nothing more immediately gratifying than cleaning something out. Here's some good news for you: It's likely high time you sort through your bathroom beauty and grooming items. Expired makeup and products do more harm than good, so saying goodbye might mean saying hello to clearer skin and healthier habits.

HuffPost Style turned to a few experts to get their takes on what products to toss and when -- among them, Dr. Pamela Dalton, a member of Monell Chemical Senses Center, Dr. Amy Wechsler, renowned dermatologist, and makeup artist Kari Bauce. To get motivated, Bauce offered us some pretty wise words. "You wouldn't feed your family something that came out of a can in 2011, so why would you put something on your face that's been sitting in a cabinet for that long?"

A reminder: This isn't some phony attempt to get you to buy more makeup or products, but rather a callout to, as Bauce says, "use what you buy." Without further ado, here are the 14 products you will (most likely) need to throw out right now:

1. Mascara
Expires after: Bauce says six to eight weeks; most say 3 months
Throw out because: "When it starts to dry out," says Bauce. It's also because you could easily get pink eye from old mascara, or contract a serious infection. Adds Bauce: "If it is flaking onto your face or your eyes itch, throw it out."

2. Nail polish
Expires after:One to two years
Throw out because: In an interview with Fitness Magazine, Annette Soboleski, a nail technician for OPI Products Inc., said that once nail polish is opened, "some ingredients will evaporate, causing the nail polish to thicken and separate." Once it separates and starts to clump, throw it out.

3. Face masks
Expires after: "One to two years, or if the consistency, dryness or color has changed," says Bauce.
Throw out because: Over time, the masks can become irritating to your face as the chemicals and ingredients within them begin to break down.

4. Perfume, cologne
Expires after: Your nose says it's gone bad
Throw out because: "There really isn't any danger in using a perfume that may have changed character, [but] it's best to just let your nose be the judge of when it's time to throw it out!" says Dr. Dalton.

5. Concealer
Expires after: One year
Throw out because: While concealer generally expires within the year, it could get dry before that, too, says Bauce.

6. Facial wipes or medicated pads
Expires after: The expiration date, typically two months
Throw out because: They've probably dried out anyway.

7. Blush
Expires after: Two to maybe three years, though Bauce notes that cream blush is more like emollient and you should toss it after about a year.
Throw out because: "It just stops working after a while, which is what you'll find with powder products in time," says Bauce. "They get drier, they get flatter. It if starts to get a film over it, toss it, because that film is mold."

8. Eyeliner
Expires after: Six months for liquid eyeliner, two years for pencil eyeliner
Throw out because: Liquid eyeliner starts to gather bacteria over time, but pencils keep longer because you constantly sharpen it. A white or grey tip is a sign of mold, adds Bauce.

9. Sunscreen
Expires after: Three years
Throw out because: According to the Mayo Clinic, sunscreen over three years old or past its expiration date is "no longer effective." They also recommend throwing out sunscreen that "has been exposed to high temperatures or has obvious changes in color or consistency."

10. Lipstick, lip gloss
Expires after: One to two years for lipstick, 18 months for lip gloss
Throw out because: Celebrity makeup artist Jamie Greenberg told HuffPost's OWN that "change in color, texture or smell are all big warning signs that your lipstick has expired."

11. Powder shadows
Expires after: Two to three years
Throw out because: "If you notice a film or if the color stops working very well, then it's aged out. If the color doesn't blend on in the way that it once did, don't try harder, that it means that it has expired," says Bauce.

12. Cream or powder foundation
Expires after: 12 to 18 months if cream, two years if powder
Throw out because: Like other emollient products, toss cream foundation after a year or if it starts to change color before that, says Bauce. Powder foundation is similar to powder blush, as mentioned above, in that if you see a film or if the color stops working, it's expired.

13. Primer
Expires after: One year
Throw out because: "If it's a matte primer then you might be able to get some time," says Bauce. "But again, remember this has been sitting around in a plastic bottle, and it's been separating. The general rule is chuck it after a year."

14. Brushes
Expires after: The bristles in your brush start to fray or fall out, or if you haven't cleaned them in a while.
Throw out because: Dirty brushes can irritate skin, so it's best to keep them clean or replace them every so often. Try washing or cleaning your brushes every two weeks with shampoo, or household items like bar soap and olive oil. Gently massage in the product, rinse it out and lay your brush flat on its side to dry.

Meghan Trainor Has Auburn Hair Now, And It Made Her Cry

Meghan Trainor, we are all about this look.

The formerly blonde songstress stepped out to a pre-Grammys party in Beverly Hills Sunday wearing a red, floor length gown. But the only red thing anyone really noticed was her new auburn hair.

The 22-year-old traded in her signature blonde locks for a shorter, choppier, darker 'do that made her pretty much unrecognizable at the event.

Trainor first debuted the new look on Instagram over the weekend. "NEW ALBUM. NEW HAIR. THANK YOU LO LO @loreienmeillon," she captioned the photo, shouting out celebrity hairstylist Lorien Meillon. Meillon, who works at the Ken Paves salon in Los Angeles, frequently shares photos and videos of Trainor on her Instagram.

The two appear to be friends, however, Trainor told Seventeen she wasn't too keen on her stylist's decision at first.

"My hairstylist said, 'We're gonna cut it. And we're gonna dye it.' I cried, and now I love it. I just have to get used to it. For 14 years I was blonde. I haven't had brown hair since I was three years old," she said.

Watch our lips movin' when we say that we absolutely love the new 'do.

Jennifer Aniston And Justin Theroux Spend Valentine's Day In Paris

Justin Theroux just took Valentine's Day to new heights -- literally.

The "Zoolander 2" writer and his wife Jennifer Aniston spent the Hallmark holiday in the City of Love, taking in the sights from atop the Eiffel Tower. Talk about romantic!

Theroux shared a photo on Instagram of his lady love gazing out the window while they enjoyed a meal together. "The Leftovers" actor captioned the pic simply, "#eiffeltower" with a rose emoji.

Last week, Theroux gave reporters the impression that his V-Day celebrations with Aniston would be pretty low-key, involving pajamas and Netflix. (Let's be real: that probably still happened after dinner, with silk pajamas and and lush Egyptian cotton robes.)

Looks like he exceeded all expectations. Can he be our boyfriend/husband?

You'll Recognize These Iconic Outfits, But Do You Know Who Designed Them?

$

0

Despite the dearth of black fashion designers featured in stores and on the runway, some of the most iconic style moments in history have been created by people of color.

From Jackie O's wedding gown to several of Michelle Obama's biggest public appearances, there are plenty of eye-catching looks that have colorful backstories you probably weren't aware of. Even the Playboy bunny costume was created by a black woman. #BlackGirlMagic

Long story short, whether publicly recognized or not, black designers have been slaying the fashion scene for ages. Check out the examples below -- and make sure to watch the video above for even more stylish proof.

Jackie Kennedy Onassis' wedding dress by Anne Lowe

Jackie O's gown for her marriage to John F. Kennedy was designed by Anne Lowe. The voluminous, off-the-shoulder dress was constructed out of 50 yards of ivory silk taffeta. Just 10 days before the wedding ceremony, a water line broke in Lowe's New York City studio and ruined the former First Lady's gown along with all 10 pink bridesmaids dresses. Lowe worked tirelessly to recreate all 11 designs in time for the Rhode Island nuptials.

The Playboy bunny costume by Zelda Wynn Valdes

Valdes was tapped by Hugh Hefner to dream up the first-ever Playboy bunny costumes thanks to her reputation for designing creations that highlighted the female body. Her namesake collection of curve-hugging designs was worn and loved by a host of Hollywood's biggest starlets during the 1940s and '50s, including Joyce Bryant, Dorothy Dandridge, Josephine Baker, Ella Fitzgerald and Mae West.

Farrah Fawcett's 1978 Academy Awards gown by Stephen Burrows

At the height of Fawcett's career in the '70s, it's no surprise that all eyes were definitely on the "Charlie's Angel" star when she wowed in a slinky gold gown by the world renowned designer Stephen Burrows at the 1978 Oscars. While Burrows was already a huge designer this moment definitely solidified Fawcett's style icon status.

Michelle Obama's 2012 Democratic National Convention dress by Tracy Reese

Reese is one of America's most beloved fashion designers and that fact was only strengthened when FLOTUS stepped out onto the 2012 DNC stage wearing her now famous sleeveless, pink-and-dusty blue frock. Since then the First Lady has worn countless Tracy Reese designs -- adding to the long list of A-listers who adore the New York-based designer's collection.

Sports Illustrated might be known for its sports coverage, but ever since 1964, the magazine has devoted an entire issue to steamy models in swimwear

Looking back at the swimsuit editions over the years, not much changed ... until this past weekend, when the glossy made history. For the first time in over 50 years, the highly anticipated annual issue featured three women, representing three different body types. Plus-size model Ashley Graham received her own cover, as did UFC fighter Ronda Rousey and model Hailey Clauson.

To prove just how monumental Saturday's unveiling really was, we decided to look at SI's swimsuit covers from the past 20 years to draw a comparison. Check them out below and join us in celebrating the fact that an iconic mag is finally celebrating women of all shapes and sizes.

3 Reasons President's Day Sales Might Be Worth It This Year

$
0
0
President's Day isn't the sexiest of holidays when it comes to shopping. Not romantic like Valentine's Day, or as patriotic as the 4th of July, or as lush and indulgent as the holidays. No, President's Day weekend is the workhorse of shopping holidays. Big burly items are on sale like mattresses, appliances, furniture and cars. So is last resort clearance merchandise like leftover January white sale linens to go with that new mattress, and holiday decorations. Discount to mid-tier department stores like Penney's, Sears, Kohl's, Target and Macy's typically have storewide sales to clear out the final bits of merchandise left over from the holidays. Most luxury retailers don't participate. Nor do boutiques, unless they spell classy with a K.

The retail component of nearly every holiday has been creeping and spreading well beyond the traditional boundaries. Holiday shopping started in early October last year and Mother's Day promotions began more than a month in advance of the actual day. But President's Day weekend sales -- perhaps because they lack of charisma, or perhaps because they overlap with more popular Valentine's Day shopping -- remain constrained to a long weekend, maybe a week at the most. A few eager online retailers are making feeble attempts but for the most part -- it's the weekend.

But despite the time constrains President's Day bargains should be worthwhile this year. Here's why.

Holiday retail sales were mediocre, and President's Day is the last resort for clearing out winter merchandise to open shelf space for spring styles. So while President's Day weekend is typically reserved for the big burlies, this year a wider variety of merchandise, including small electronics, clothing and home decorations, will be available from a wider variety of retailers.

Last year's holiday retail sales demonstrated with absolute clarity that shoppers want to buy online. But some types of merchandise simply demand a personal inspection. Only desperate insomniacs buy a mattress without giving it a test spin in a store first. The same is true for most appliances, cars, furniture and the other giant-sized items associated with this shopping weekend. This President's Day is an opportunity for retailers who want to get shoppers into their stores again to showcase special products, merchandising, remind shoppers how helpful a great salesperson can be and tempt shoppers with alluring products they might purchase impulsively.

Plus, shoppers in many parts of the country have yet another reason for switching from a screen to a store: they've been cabin-fevered by challenging weather. And so between the wider variety of merchandise, cabin-fever and the necessity of at least visiting a store to check out big relatively risky purchases, shopping on President's Day weekend will be more alluring than usual.

But shoppers, caveat emptor: browsing leads to buying. In fact there is a correlation between the amount of time a person spends in a store and how much they buy. So map out your plan and shop with a clear goal in mind. Remember the founding father dictum that a penny saved is a penny earned.

Is there more to life than being really, really ridiculously, good looking?

If you're one of these guys, there's a bunch of money in it. But fashion is just about the only industry where women make exponentially more than men; the highest paid male models pale in comparison to their female colleagues in the same bracket.

For example, according to a recent Forbes article using data from 2013 and 2014, Sean O'Pry, the highest earning male on the list, made $1.5 million, compared to Gisele Bundchen's $47 million.

As New York Fashion Week wraps up, we look at the fashion world's top earning male models (you know, the guys all over the ads in the front half of your favorite magazines):

Jessica Simpson most definitely got some action on Valentine's Day, and she's proud to admit it.

On Sunday, the singer-turned-fashion-mogul posted a sexy snap of herself and husband Eric Johnson on Instagram, with a cheeky caption to match.

In the pic, Simpson, 35, channels Daisy Duke (whom she played in the 2005 "Dukes of Hazzard" remake) in an outfit made up of tiny denim cutoffs, a matching denim shirt and a red bikini top. The mother of two accessorized with a pair of oversized sunglasses.

"Happy Valentines Day #thisJohnsonisgettinIt," Simpson wrote in the caption. Naturally, Johnson looks very pleased.

The Way You're Applying Makeup Could Give You Wrinkles

$

By Caroline Solomon, Glamour

2016-02-12-1455309810-9390122-skincareproductsw540.jpg

Confession: I spend way too much time thinking about the encroaching fine lines around my eyes, and the vanity mirror perched next to my desk computer is probably doing me no favors (I guess it's a must-have if, as a beauty assistant at Glamour, I'm tasked with sampling beauty products all day). Still, I probably use it to probe at my emerging wrinkles as much as I use it to try out new mascaras.

So in an effort to keep fine lines at bay, I enlisted the advice of experts who say that the solution is not just about owning (and diligently using) a damn good eye cream, but it's also about knowing how to care for the eye area too. Turns out, there's a proper way to apply eye products-- and doing it wrong can accelerate the appearance of wrinkles. Say what?! I know.

"Rubbing and pulling on the delicate skin around your eyes causes eyelids to lose elasticity and become more wrinkled," says New York City dermatologist Jessica Weiser, M.D. French-born epidermologist Isabelle Bellis adds: "The skin there is much finer than the rest of the face, so tugging can really damage collagen and break capillaries." The solution? Manage the area gently--treat it like silk, says Bellis.

Below, are the three most common wrinkle-causing errors derms see women consistently make; plus, handy .GIFs we created to illustrate the correct technique you should be using. Read on, and add these methods to your routine, asap.

Mistake #1: Pulling your eyelid too taught when applying eyeliner

2016-02-12-1455309828-6138715-eyelinerw540.gif

Dr. Weiser recommends "gently stretching the skin taut from the corner of the outer eyelid," and instead of tugging at the eyelid to get rid of any mistakes (guilty), she suggests removing smudges with a cotton swab. For tug-free eyeliner application, consider investing in liquid liners that glide on more easily (try Maybelline Master Precise Liquid Liner), or gel liners that don't create as much drag as other liners (I love Marc Jacobs Highliner Gel Eye Crayon Eyeliners, which glide on like butter). Or, you could do as Clemence Poesy does, and try tight-lining your eyes with eyeliner instead (lining the inner rims of your upper and lower lashes can seriously minimize tugging).

Mistake #2: Tugging at your eyes to remove makeup

2016-02-12-1455309865-5426086-makeupremoverw540.gif

When it comes to taking off your makeup, patience is your best friend. Dr. Weiser is a fan of soaking natural cotton pads in Bioderma Micellar Solution and gently applying them to the eye area until makeup is fully dissolved. If you've got waterproof mascara on, soak a cotton pad in an oil-based makeup remover (Lancome Bi-Facil Double Action Eye Makeup Remover melts away even the toughest mascaras) and gently wipe the lashes upward and downward until no mascara remains. She also cautions against becoming too attached to makeup remover wipes, which encourage tugging, and can also contain skin-drying alcohols and preservatives to keep them fresh (if you absolutely must use a wipe, consider an oil-based makeup remover wipe, like the ones by RMS beauty, which contains nothing but coconut oil).

Mistake #3: Rubbing your eye cream in too aggressively

2016-02-12-1455309901-9724164-eyecreamw540.gif

When it comes to applying eye cream, having a gentle touch is key. Eye cream should be applied in a light tapping motion (with the ring finger, which applies the least pressure to the skin) starting at the inner corner of the lower eyelid and extending to the outer corner, says Dr. Weiser (try Colbert MD Nourish Eye Cream, which is super creamy and absorbs almost instantly, guaranteeing crack-free concealer application). If the cream has not fully absorbed into the skin, follow up with a gentle patting motion with your ring finger to allow the cream to penetrate more deeply into the skin, advises Dr. Weiser. Bonus: Applying light pressure on the corner of your eyes with your ring finger after applying cream will tone and reinforce eye muscles, says Bellis.

Many people struggle with finding a foundation that matches their complexion, goes on seamlessly and doesn't transfer all over the place. But these makeup problems are tenfold for women with dark skin.

Why? Well for starters, there aren't as many options of foundation shades for darker skin, compared to individuals with light-to-medium skin tones. Most cosmetic companies miss the mark with formulas that are too red or too yellow. Not to mention, those that do get it right are often way too expensive.

Thankfully, there's a select group of YouTube beauty vloggers who can teach women with dark skin a thing or two about choosing the right foundation and perfecting their application technique. Get ready to take plenty of notes!

What you need: Creamy peanut butter and a new razor.

What you do: In the shower, apply a very thin layer of peanut butter to your legs and shave as usual. Heads up: You'll have to rinse out the razor pretty thoroughly every few swipes, as the blades get clogged easily.

Why you might try it: If you don't have your normal gel lying around, peanut butter works shockingly well, as its high oil content is extra-hydrating. Since it's kind of a mess, we wouldn't recommend it as a primary hair-removal tool, but in a pinch it certainly does the job.

Peanut butter: Is there anything it can't do?

Painting your nails at home always seems like a good idea at first. (Cheap, fast and in your underwear...) But between the streaks and the smudges and the general fear-of-screwing-everything-up anxiety, you could end up swearing off the process forever. First, calm down (you can do it). Second, read up on three genius tricks that will help you finally master the at-home mani.

1. Always leave your thumbs for last. They come in handy if (sorry, when) you need to clean up any edges. Instead, paint your pointer or pinky finger first. Then slowly work your way over to the rest of your digits.

2. Don't fear the non-dominant hand. To ensure that both sides are equally polished, think backward: Keep your non-dominant hand (the one with the brush in it) in one place and move your dominant hand underneath it to catch the paint.

3. Never worry about getting a little polish on the surrounding skin. Just let your nails dry and harden overnight. Then the next morning in the shower, you can peel off the mistakes like magic.

A Clever Trick for Fixing a Wonky Drawstring

How does your favorite hoodie go into the washing machine and come out with its drawstring wrapped around two bras, a pair of leggings and a sock you didn't even know was in there?

What you need: A plastic straw

Step 1: Untie any knots on the end of the drawstring and thread one end through the straw. Tie a knot so the string doesn't slip back out through the straw.

Step 2: Slip the straw (with your drawstring knot-side in) through the first hole, and thread it through the hoodie's loop (or sweatpants' waistband). The straw makes it easier for your hands to work it around the circle.

Step 3: Once you've worked the straw through the length of fabric, untie the knot, slip the straw off and voilà! A perfectly threaded drawstring without the hassle of that old safety pin trick your mother taught you.

"Big Bang Theory" actress Kaley Cuoco was a pretty "Penny" at the Grammys on Monday night.

The 30-year-old actress chose a wide-legged, bejeweled Naeem Khan jumpsuit with interesting cutouts that accentuated her great tan. Cuoco wore her hair in a tousled bob, with a smoky eye and nude clutch. She looked absolutely gorgeous.

Cuoco was a presenter at the Grammy awards. Her look absolutely sparkled on stage.

The actress later made waves when she was spotted out with Grammys performer (and hottie country singer) Sam Hunt. Cuoco is newly single since her split with her ex-husband, tennis player Ryan Sweeting, so naturally dating rumors will swirl!

Mark Ronson
Not every guy can get away with a tank top and cropped blue and black pinstripe jacket. Then again, not every guy is Mark Ronson, able to pull off a new era of New Wave that's never not just damn cool.

Leon Bridges
Bridges's shawl collar tuxedo is old-school elegant. With a bow tie and some patent leather lace-ups he'd look sharp, sure, but with that bolo tie and Chelsea boots, he stands out from the crowd.

James Bay
Bay puts a dandy twist on classic black tie, opting for a dark green velvet dinner jacket with his go-to topper. The effect is rakish and refined, aka a move that makes classic evening wear feel fresh.

Russell Wilson
It takes a pretty smart kit to stand out on a red carpet with the music world's personal style masters, but Wilson's slick DB more than stands up to the competition.

Slim black suit, crisp white shirt, black skinny tie: The one outfit that never fails, no matter if you're headed into a big meeting or the music industry's biggest night.

John Legend
Embroidery and black tie rarely works, frankly, but leave it to the mastermind behind Gucci's new look (creative director Alessandro Michele) and Legend, a guy who can pull off just about any well tailored look, make it work.

Lady Gaga Serves Some Bowie-Inspired Couture Realness At Grammys After-Party

Say what you want about Lady Gaga, but when she commits to a concept, boy, does she follow through.

After her show-stopping tribute to the late, great David Bowie onstage and on the red carpet, the singer celebrated her big night in another Bowie-inspired look for a Grammys after-party on Monday.

Rocking the same florescent orange hair as earlier in the night, Gaga upgraded the lightning bolt projected on her face during the performance to a mosaic-style design, as well as adding some earrings in the shape of black stars, most likely a reference to Bowie's last album

To compliment the face art, Gaga wore a coral colored dress with jeweled embroidery on the bust and straps, giving us some serious Queen of the Nile vibes. She paired the brightly colored frock with matching shoes and an oversized white feathery boa.

Yes, that's Pamela Anderson standing next to her, and no, we're not going to comment on whatever might have happened there. As the saying goes: if you don't have anything nice to say ... don't wear an outfit that looks like it was sewn together last minute to meet the dress code of a college toga party.

Sorry, we tried.

There are some times in life where you've just got to ask for what you want. This is one of those times.

During a performance of the Piece of Me show at Planet Hollywood on Sunday night, Britney Spears reached peak Britney with a special message for all those in attendance.

“I think it’s time to find a hot nerd, like, a really hot guy with a really big penis,” she announced to the crowd before gesturing to her crotch.

The heart wants what it wants. That's what the Selena Gomez song is about, right?
