Make Lemonade

Do you think Beyoncé would be Beyoncé if she let what happened in the past determine who she is working to become in the future?

2016-05-12-1463075718-5282011-22beyoncelemonadescreenshot2016billboard650.jpg

Definitely not.

That's the thing I love so much about her new visual album, Lemonade. It is about resilience, metamorphosis, and forgiveness. It's about taking life by the lemons and making it into one big cocktail of experience that you curate into the life of your dreams.

Whether it's weight gain, back pain, the "Haters," a cheatin' man (or woman!), money troubles, or just general frustration with not being where you want to be in life, you can always choose to "make lemonade," whatever that means for you.

Lemonade is not about brushing everything under the carpet and pretending to be okay. It's about walking down the street, Hot Sauce in hand, and handling your business like a woman. It's about not apologizing for your emotions, your mess, your humanity -- but rather, baring it all, unapologetically, and choosing to love yourself in spite of (because of?) all that mess.

Me paying tribute to Queen Bey's famous lemon Instagram photo.

I've had my hurdles and my rough patches in life. I've written about some of them here on the blog in the past. I, like every human being I know, have had to wrestle with shame, guilt, embarrassment, failure, being passed over, and the desire to give up.

Even Beyoncé deals with this stuff! No one is immune to struggle. The struggle finds you, one way or another. It's how you choose to deal with it that defines your experience here on this earth.

This is true of your experience with your body. And other people, and your job, and romance, and money, and family, and yourself. It's true whether you're a size 2 or 22. It's true whether you're black, white, brown, mixed-race, or any shade in between. We ALL get to decide.

My biggest takeaway after ravenously ingesting untold quantities of Lemonade over the past few weeks is this: no matter what happens to you, or what you're going through, you can choose to roll all of those experiences into who you become going forward. You can channel all of that negativity that's weighing down on you into a big, glorious release -- monster truck optional -- and then morph into the most glorious version of yourself yet.

I often remind myself that Beyoncé has the same 24 hours in a day that I do. I, like Beyoncé, have the option to either allow myself to be consumed by the sourness, or make lemonade. The same is true for you -- what will you choose?

Woman Fired For Not Wearing Heels Gets Flat-Out Awesome Support

Nicola Thorp was dismissed from her temp job at a finance company in the UK after she refused to wear high heels. Since then, her story has garnered a ton of attention online, the company who dismissed her changed its dress code policy and more than 100,000 people have signed a petition in support of changing laws that allow employers to make women wear high heels to work.

On top of signing the petition, though, people who agree that the policy is completely absurd are also tweeting pictures of their flat shoes in solidarity with Thorp.

The tweet originated with the Fawcett Society, a UK-based charity focused on women's issues and gender equality.

People have since begun tweeting pictures of their flat shoes with the hashtag #FawcettFlatsFriday. Women's Equality Party founder Catherine Mayer got in on the action, as did Labour MP Stella Creasy.

Other notable tweets came from London's Metropolitan Police cadets and the Mayor of London's environmental issues team.

And even though there's been typical online trolling and misogyny since Thorp's story started to gain attention, that hasn't held supportive men back from playing along as well.

Thorp's experience has incited a discussion about workplace discrimination and sexism, and many of the hilarious tweets from women highlight the ridiculousness of the idea that high heels make a woman more capable of being a professional:

"Just off to trustee board meeting. Will I be able to cope in flats?"

"Wearing metallic flats today. Height of unprofessionalism and think my IQ just dropped 10 points"

"Flat shoes today. Pretty worried I won't be able to do my job"

And for one lucky man, the hashtag inspired some bold new fashion choices.

Tweet on, feminists!

Kate Mara is one of the coolest stars in Hollywood. Miranda Priestly Would Loathe Anne Hathaway's And Emily Blunt's 'Devil Wears Prada' Reunion

Anne Hathaway and Emily Blunt apparently ditched their prior commitment to go to "some hideous skirt convention" to deliver a mini "Devil Wears Prada" reunion 10 years in the making.

On Thursday, the two actresses both attended an event in Los Angeles celebrating the fashions of "Alice Through the Looking Glass," Hathaway's latest film, and posed together for a picture so chic it belongs in the pages of Runway.

Hathaway's appearance marks her first public debut since giving birth to her son, Jonathan Rosebanks Shulman, less than two months ago. The new mom, stunning in a black-and-white floral getup, attended the soirée with husband and fellow actor Adam Shulman in tow, posing for pictures and mingling with other celebs.

The Oscar winner now has more than film credits in common with Blunt, who is currently pregnant with her second baby. She and husband John Krasinski welcomed their first child, Hazel, in 2014. The "Into the Woods" actress donned a simple black jumpsuit and bowtie heels for the event and walked the stone (?) carpet with Krasinski in style.

The two have clearly developed their keen fashion eye since "Devil Wears Prada" was released in 2006, but we have one bone to pick with Hathaway.

Florals? For spring? Groundbreaking.

These Sisters Are Creating A Future For Gender-Neutral Footwear

A pair of sisters from San Francisco want to change the landscape of the fashion industry by creating a type of footwear that is truly gender-neutral.

Sarah and Rachel Waxman, now based in Berlin and NYC respectively, are the minds behind Matriarch, a menswear-inspired footwear campaign for women, men and non-binary individuals.

The pair say that their inspiration for the campaign stems from their mutual love of traditional menswear show styles, but an inability to find them in sizes that fit their feet.

"People who do not ascribe to traditional notions of masculinity or femininity aren’t anything new either, and we think it’s time that the retail landscape finally starts to reflect this," they told The Huffington Post.

Matriarch is currently engaged in a Kickstarter campaign in order to fund their first production order. Check out an interview with the Waxman sisters below.

What is your goal with Matriarch?
Sarah Waxman: Our goal with Matriarch is to bring the quality typical of men’s footwear to all genders and do it in the most sustainable way possible. With Matriarch we aim to erase the boundaries between clothing deemed “appropriate” for men and women and offer conscious consumers better options.

We are two women who love menswear style and have always been frustrated at never finding what we want in our size -- particularly when it comes to footwear. We know this is not unique to us -- so many other women, trans, and non-binary folks have expressed this same issue. We wanted to fill this gap.

My background is in industrial design/footwear design so we are big proponents of letting beautiful materials speak for themselves. This influenced our choice to use vegetable-tanned leather exclusively. We think veggie tan is great because it develops a patina unique to each wearer over time. We prefer an honest material over something like a painted leather -- at that point why use leather at all? Vegetable tanned leather is also great because it is naturally processed. It gets its natural coloring from soaking in tree bark tannins -- the ancient, traditional way of tanning leather. It is also biodegradable. If you put our shoes in the ground, the leather will disappear after 100 years.

Why is it important that we have gender-neutral footwear options?
We believe the concept of breaking fashion down into “women’s” and “men’s” is outdated, limiting and unproductive. People who do not ascribe to traditional notions of masculinity or femininity aren’t anything new either, and we think it’s time that the retail landscape finally starts to reflect this.

What do you hope the future of fashion holds in terms of gender neutrality?

We hope that "gender neutral" loses its "trend" status and becomes more understood as a normal way of identifying one’s self. We hope that in the (near) future, anyone of any gender will be able to walk into a store and never have to feel bad or awkward or uncomfortable browsing in any particular section.

Jessica Simpson Is A Vision In Blue On Date Night With Husband Eric Johnson

Jessica Simpson and her husband, Eric Johnson, sure love their date nights.

The couple took some time away from the kids this weekend for a dinner at Mastro's Steakhouse in Beverly Hills. The two, who often enjoy dinner dates, were photographed leaving the restaurant arm in arm.

Simpson opted for a fitted blue dress with a high slit up the front and a daringly low neckline. She paired the sexy dress with strappy silver heels and some dangling earrings and left her blond locks down and loosely curled. Johnson let his lady's outfit shine by choosing an all-black ensemble.

Earlier this week, Simpson hinted that she's working on new music by posting a couple photos of herself in the studio. In one of the pics, the 35-year-old is sitting at the soundboard with none other than music legend Linda Perry.

If the photos are, in fact, a sign of new material to come, it will be the first time Simpson's released a new song or album since 2010's "Happy Christmas."

5 Ways to Take Care of Fabrics While Traveling

While it's all very well to take a cashmere blanket on the plane, a merino sweater for a chilly night on a safari park, or an angora cardigan for when the air conditioning gets a little too strong on (yet another) layover, when it comes to caring for these delicate materials, the picture gets a little fuzzier (sorry). So, while traveling with luxe materials may add extra pizzazz to your ensemble, it does come with the added stress of having to care for them.

Carry a Lint Roller in Your Carry-On

Good quality fabrics like cashmere will naturally pill over time. While a little shedding is to be expected, it's still on you to keep up the appearance of the fabric and make sure it remains looking fuzz-free! Using a lint roller, cashmere comb or depiller will do the trick, but avoid over-raking too often as this may result in holes. Our favourite is from Gleener which has three different blades for fine and thick knits - and it's portable enough to be considered travel size!

Wash By Hand

Delicate fabrics like wool or angora may read 'Dry Clean Only' on the label, but that may just be a way for manufacturers and retailers to keep the elite feel on the garment. In reality, many fabrics are best washed by hand. When you're on the go, of course, it is difficult to find time to swish and swill in the sink, but that quick dunk in the hotel wash basin can save a garment from being stained beyond repair, not to mention extending its shelf-life. For beach holidays, hand washing bikinis in-between washes can also keep swimwear feeling fresh if your villa doesn't have a washing machine.

Pack a Hand Wash Soap, and Use Lukewarm Water Only!

Fill a (clean!) sink with tepid water and add a small amount of gentle cleaning liquid - we've been known to use hand soap or even an all-natural shampoo! - to the basin, distributing suds evenly. Place the garment in only when the sink is filled, since the water pressure can stretch malleable materials. Make sure your sweater or cardigan is turned inside out, and, once submerged, soak anywhere from ten minutes to a few hours.

Lay Out Fabrics Flat

For best results, lay the garment out on a clean, white towel on your hotel desk, since this prevents color transfers, and gently roll the two items together to lightly press out any excess water. Once this is done, lay it out flat to air dry. Make sure any pockets are stretched out straight and that buttons are done up, to avoid uneven sagging and wrinkles. If you do find your top is a little too small, now is also a good time to 're-shape' it, stretching or pulling where appropriate. Alternatively, washing in slightly warmer water can be a good idea if your item is a little on the baggier side.

Tissue Paper is Not Just for Your Suitcase

Once dry, you should store your cashmere or wool with tissue paper, and, if you're staying in one area for more than a few nights, perhaps invest in some mothballs or rosemary to stash in your wardrobe. As a final note, hanging these sweaters is never a good idea - we'll say it before and we'll say it again: the fabrics are d-e-l-i-c-a-t-e and therefore don't respond well to being pulled at by the shoulders!

Never have a (mo)hair out of place, again!

Wow, Kendall Jenner Looks Stunning In This Completely Sheer Gown

And the award for classiest take on the naked gown trend goes to... Kendall Jenner

The Kardashian/Jenner family has an penchant for sheer anything. But this Roberto Cavalli gown Jenner wore to the premiere of "From The Land Of The Moon" at the Cannes Film Festival Sunday is almost so intricately beautiful you don't even realize it's basically completely see-through.

Jenner paired the bold dress with Chopard jewels and a slicked-back hairdo, looking absolutely stunning as she posed for photographers solo and with mom Kris Jenner.

Cavalli staffers, who were clearly very excited about the whole thing, uploaded a whopping six Instagram images and videos of Jenner in the design. In captions, the gown was described as a "long T-shirt dress in silk tulle all-over embroidered with intertwined black velvet and gold lurex snakes."

Little sister Kylie and mom Kris both expressed their admiration for Kendall's look on Instagram. "You're so beautiful @kendalljenner," Kylie wrote.

You're so beautiful @kendalljenner ❤️

We kannes hardly wait to see what other looks she has up her sleeve during the rest of the festival, which runs through May 22.

Will, Kate And Harry Are Knockouts As They Launch A Mental Health Initiative

Prince WilliamPrince Harry, and Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge (the former Kate Middleton) knocked the launch of the new program Heads Together out of the park. Literally.

The trio, who have collectively made mental health a focus and priority of their work, announced the initiative back in April, explaining it would bring together a number of charities with the common goal of ending stigma surrounding mental health.

The launch on Monday at Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in London included speeches, interactive games, a "what makes you happy?" wall and more. But arguably none of those things were more fun to watch than when each of the three royals had a go at a some boxing, to demonstrate a physical exercise that can improve mental health

Kate made it look easy in a now-sold-out (of course) Banana Republic skirt:

And William gave it his best shot:

But their skills seemed to pale in comparison to those of Prince Harry, who Monday continued his campaign to not only to raise awareness but to also be the most swoon-worthy royal of them all:

As if that weren't enough, Harry also tried his hand at a bit of DJ'ing by adding songs to a "Head Mix." Support network The Mix reported Harry's pick was "Runnin'" by Naughty Boy, while Kate chose Emeli Sande's "Heaven."

Leave it to these three to really roll with the punches, eh?

Janet Jackson's Style Evolution, From Cute Child Star To Sexy Mom-To-Be

Today is Janet Jackson's 50th birthday

We have watched the pop star in awe, as she went from being the cute kid sister in a talented musical family to becoming a legendary entertainer in her own right. Every move that Jackson makes both on and off stage is precise, and her outfit choices are just as detailed.

The "Dammn Baby" singer has experimented with many different trends since stepping into the spotlight. From tailored dress suits she donned while performing with her siblings to oversized black blazers and the single key earring she sported in "Control," Jackson's style evolution is just as iconic as the productions that make up her signature sound.

With recent reports that she is pregnant with her first child, we are really hoping that Jackson will give us glimpses of her maternity style. Can you just imagine the fashion fierceness that will ensue?

In honor of Jackson's milestone birthday, we have put together this photo retrospective of her greatest fashion hits over the years. Which era of Miss Jackson's style do you love most? Tell us in the comments section!

The One Piece Of Clothing That Gives Me Confidence

The Lonely Hour, a podcast created by Julia Bainbridge, explores the concept of loneliness through discussions with featured guests who tell stories of their own experience with feeling alone. In between seasons, Bainbridge commissions essays from other writers on the topic, like this piece on hooded clothing below.

By Charlotte Druckman

Four facts:

1. As soon as I could speak, one of my frequent refrains, uttered when sweet older women would ask to peek into my stroller was, "Don't see me, lady!"

2. My first pet was a snail, but what I really wanted was a turtle.

3. It wasn't until I was in my thirties that I experienced loneliness while being alone. It was fleeting.

4. I own upwards of 25 hooded items, all of which I wear often.

Poet Jim Harrison said that all people disappear. He "disappeared" at the end of March. I assume that's what he meant by that quote, that we all die eventually. But to disappear in life? To be alive and seen by no one?

The first time I wished I had that power, I was in eighth grade, and I spent the next few years coming up with ways to achieve it. I knew I couldn't "disapparate" or anything; I just wanted to figure out how to go unnoticed while observing everything. To hide in plain sight.

I've always liked to read people like they're characters in a novel, watching them interact to figure out what makes them tick or what their agendas are, but there's more to it. Eighth grade was also, not coincidentally, the year I was bullied by my three supposed best friends, all named Jessica. It was like the movie Heathers, except the Jessicas weren't particularly pretty or popular, and I went to a small, cliquey, all-girls prep school, so I had no Christian Slater to help me exact revenge. My only option was to make new friends, which, at that age, in those circumstances, wasn't very easy, especially after the Jessicas started a movement to get one third of our grade to stop speaking to me. (I still have no idea why any of it happened. Probably because I wasn't named Jessica.)

So began my mistrust of people.

Luckily, I've always enjoyed my own company. As a little girl, when left to my own devices, I'd invent characters to interview in my head. You could send me to my room and, as long as I had my record player (or, later, cassette player), I could listen to music and sing for hours. Once I learned how to read, I'd happily get lost in the pages of books, taking breaks for daydreams. So when the Jessicas tried to rip me to shreds and got our classmates to ignore me, being alone wasn't so bad. I did that for a while and then finally forged ahead, making some new friends. I even forgave the Jessicas eventually. But I still feel most at home when I'm alone. And when I pull a hood over my head, I am, in less than a second, all by myself.

One of my most prized clothing items is a chocolate brown, hooded sweater dress made by Gary Graham. I wear it as many times as I can each winter -- even when other people might consider it too casual -- because it's equipped with an escape hatch. When that hood is down, there's a security blanket factor to feeling it on my back, hanging off my neck. I like how it drapes, the slouchy elegance of its soft arc. And I like knowing I can pull it up if I need to.

As long as I have a hood, I feel sheltered -- cozy, comfortable, comforted, secure, or, like the thesaurus' two distinct connotations of the word, "protected" and "secluded." It gives me a sense of safety within the outside world, whatever that looks like.

Do you like to swim? To be underwater, sealed off from anything going on above the surface? I do. It calms, clears, energizes, and focuses my mind, which is what I assume happens when people who meditate "get it right." (I wouldn't know. It's never worked for me. Instead, I swim.) I used to do laps twice a week, for an hour at a time. I'd touch one wall, push off and glide through that whoosh of momentum, then propel myself forward until I got to the other wall. Back and forth like that, over and over. It's like being in a cocoon. Do you know what I'm talking about?

It reminds me a little bit of putting your hands over your ears and humming: There's the completely irrational thought that no one can hear you, and that you can hear yourself from the inside out. It's not that you can hear your innermost thoughts -- the silent ones -- it's that you can hear your innermost. In those moments, hands over ears or submerged in water, there is the illusion that your internal world -- what's going on inside your head -- has converged with your physical space.

When I put my hood up, it may not stimulate the same sensory responses, but psychologically, for whatever reason, it has that effect of collapsing the internal and external. The hood becomes the extension of my head, and everything under that fabric, my reality. It's like being curled up inside my own brain.

I had been traveling to that place -- my cortical hammock -- without sartorial assistance for years. Walking down the streets of New York City, an activity I enjoy almost as much as swimming, I rarely see people I know waving at me until they're right up in my face. I've got some kind of imaginary scrim up that makes everyone look fuzzy. Wandering inside my head as I walk, I find songs playing, whether they're piped through headphones or lodged into folds in my brain and pulled out at unexpected moments. Out on a mission, a stolen car mission/Had a little problem with the transmission. There are problems in the process of being solved, some my friends' (should he quit his job? Where should she take her out-of-town maybe-boyfriend for dinner and why does he continue to insist on staying at a hotel? How should he deal with getting squeezed out by his business partners who are possibly engaged in illegal misconduct? Where should she pitch her story?); some my own (what if I think that story is lame but know how easily she will get it published? Is there a better way for her to do it? Yes. Should I tell her? Isn't that HER job? Yes, I should stop doing her homework for her, but I enjoy doing it too much. I will try to stop. Why is my infuriating crush still unable to shit or get off the pot? Is it my fault? No. He is heartbreakingly sucky. I should find a new crush. I will focus on that, yes. But I can't quit him. Why? Get it together. No crying on the street. I'll think about it tomorrow.); some bigger than myself (How can freelance writers form a more perfect un-unionized union so people will stop exploiting us? Isn't it odd that Donald Trump has gotten as far as he has in this election? It's surprising no one has found a way to take him out. How would you do it? Blackmail? Assassination? Who would do it? The FBI? The CIA? Is there maybe a B613 like on Scandal? Probably. Someone, somewhere is plotting.); and some completely random (Someone needs to write a version of Lean In for creative types. Does the word "corny" have anything to do with corn? Has anyone tried making hot-honey gelato? The hot-honey people should start doing specific types of honey and matching them with specific types of chili peppers. Has that happened yet? Probably. What will be the next tahini? Is it tamarind? Is there such a thing as sesame milk? That would be so good in my matcha latte. Instead of a story on how Middle Eastern food is trending, can someone write a story about WHY it's trending and how that happened and the fact that all these chefs are going to Israel on sponsored trips? No one will assign that story. Have chefs started leading tours to their foreign regions of expertise yet? Not cruises. But if Yotam Ottolenghi and Sami Tamimi were to organize a trip to see THEIR Jerusalem, that would be great. This is probably happening already, too.) Are you ready for this action/Does it give you satisfaction/Are you hip to what I'm sayin'/If you are then let's start swayin'. This may seem exhausting to you, but I enjoy most of it immensely.

So, yes, I can get into hood-mode hoodless, but I prefer to do it with the proper equipment.

The first time I read about Harry Potter's cloak of invisibility I felt the sleeve-tug of want. An anonymous Christmas gift from Secret Santa Dumbledore, it had belonged to James Potter, Harry's deceased father, who had used it to sneak into the kitchens of Hogwarts to swipe snacks. The garment had nothing to recommend it aesthetically; it was no remarkable example of workmanship or tailoring. Its assets were unseeable to the most discerning eye. That was the point. Any person or object under its coverage became invisible.

In hindsight, though, I've decided the hood of Obi-Wan Kenobi's cloak is the one against which all others should be judged. It forms that perfect inverted turnip shape around the face, softening features while contouring them. That mysterious, swallowing hood shaded his cheekbones with the necessary chiaroscuro in Star Wars: Episode VI -- Return of the Jedi. (Women seeking flattering, dimmed lighting should pay attention and consider Obi-Wan's cloak a wardrobe essential.)

As far as wearers of cloaks go, no one carries a hood like Grace Jones. Designers like Donatella Versace and pop stars like Miley Cyrus have drawn inspiration from the singer, whose heyday was in the early 1980s and is still performing at the age of 67. Jones wore dresses with hoods, jumpsuits with hoods, Halston hoods, Alaïa hoods -- she even cited the hood as one of her trademarks along with sunglasses and her four-color painted lips. Those three things she used to stand out and identify herself to the world were also masking devices. In her book, Jones writes about the dangers of achieving real, lasting fame: "Once you have the attention, once people know your name and think they have you figured out, that's when the work really begins...How do you maintain the momentum, how do you develop yourself, how to keep from drowning in it all. From disappearing." She's talking about the fear of losing herself, not of becoming irrelevant, and I see her reflectively glossy painted lips, her dark, impenetrable eyewear, and her hoods as performative props that allowed her to control how much -- or little -- of herself she showed the world. She used them to ensure she'd still have a self to disappear into.

I have always admired Grace Jones for being a strong woman and for what she represents as a pop-cultural icon: She's a Jamaican-born disco queen who refuses to try to look like or be anyone else. I can't be anyone other than myself, either, which means you're never going to see me strutting my stuff with a neon silken hood cascading around my face. Camouflage and guerrilla tactics are more my speed. For me, wearing a hood lets people know that I'd like to be left alone. I don't want to sign their petition. I don't want to tell them which way Magnolia Bakery is, or where the sidewalk ends. It's how, as a grown-up, I say: "Don't see me, lady."

5 Foolproof Tips To Help You Nail Summer Wedding Style

There’s just something about a fresh start that makes us want to put our best self forward. So for weddings, the ultimate in new beginnings, we like to pull out all the stops. We’ve asked some of the most stylish women we know to weigh in on what makes for perfect summer wedding style. Then, we teamed up with dressbarn to create a cheat sheet for you. Here you’ll find the tips and designs that you need to feel great and hit the dance floor in style.

1. It's OK To Layer

Just because it’s summertime, doesn’t mean you have to go sleeveless. In fact, you can expect most venues to pump the AC so that even on the balmiest day, the ballroom will still feel like an icebox. Dresses with sleeves are an easy way to avoid the chill, but most ladies agree you can’t go wrong with a tailored jacket, a cozy pashmina or a chic cardigan to look extra cool, and not the least bit cold.

"A great blazer is key for an unpredictable evening -- or day! Choose something in a rich fabric like silk or angora to keep the look elevated. Go for something cropped, or long and oversized; anything in between will feel too business-y." – Natalie Decleve, 32, New York, N.Y., Natty Style

“Always carry a pashmina wrap. Something in a light gray matches everything and can be used in all seasons. A cropped cashmere cardigan with pearl buttons would also be cute.” – Ilina Ewen, 47, Raleigh, N.C., Dirt & Noise

“Nothing looks sexier than a sharp blazer over an ultrafeminine evening dress and freezing wedding venues are the best excuse for trying this idea." – Lauren Ciaccia, Senior Fashion Editor at Stylight

2. Lace Is Major Marriage Material

This fabric isn’t just for wedding dresses; in a cheery hue, it’s the perfect pick for guests as well. With the right accessories, a lace dress can range from elegant to boho and work for just about any venue, from ballroom to backyard.

“Lace dresses are a gorgeous trend right now and are perfect for wedding attire. I would accessorize a lace dress with a simple nude pump or sandal, a classic clutch and a beautiful chandelier earring.” – Jill Gott Gleason, 37, Grand Rapids, Mich., Good Life For Less

“I'd opt for a dress in a light peachy-pink or blush color -- it brings out a natural glow and is flattering to a wide range of skin tones.” – Rita Templeton, 35, Huron, Ohio, Fighting Frumpy

“By adding a pair of boots or booties to a lace dress, the look goes from fancy to free-spirited. Fringed accessories or a long pendant necklace up the boho factor even more." – Natalie Decleve, 32, New York City, NY, Natty Style

“I'd avoid anything dainty or anything that can snag the lace. Avoid a studded or beaded bag for this very reason.” – Ilina Ewen, 47, Raleigh, NC, Dirt & Noise

3. Play With Prints

Weddings and flowers just go together. Hello, bouquets! Which may be why most women agree that if you’re planning to wear a patterned dress, floral is the way to go. Colorful blooms are an easy way to inject a playful energy into your look.

“A floral dress is a great alternative for spring and summer weddings. It's not only seasonally appropriate, but can be very fun and festive too! Remember, this is the bride and groom’s joyous day. As a guest it's important to reflect that.” – Jill Gott Gleason, 37, Grand Rapids, Mich., Good Life For Less

“Black dresses are an easy go-to, but florals are a current favorite. I am also a fan of anything pink!” – Marissa Evans, 32, New York, HiSawyer

“Consider summery colors like yellow, turquoise or lilac. Pastels work well on hot days when the sun is shining.” – Meredith Hale, 39, Sleepy Hollow, N.Y.

4. Comfort Is King

Whether it’s shoes that make you want to be a dancing queen or a dress that lets you enjoy every bite of wedding cake, most women agree that when it comes to choosing a winning wedding outfit, comfort reigns supreme.

“Don't wear anything you can't sit in or dance in. Style and comfort are not mutually exclusive, but shop for what you feel good in, not what some magazine says.” – Ilina Ewen, 47, Raleigh, N.C., Dirt & Noise

“I [feel and look my best] in nude shoes, be it flats or heels; my shoe collection is pretty much all beige.” – Marissa Evans, 32, New York, HiSawyer

“Kitten heels add a bit of lift to make your legs look great, but not too much so your feet hurt.” – Ilina Ewen, 47, Raleigh, N.C., Dirt & Noise

“If the wedding is outdoors in the grass, avoid heels that may become stuck or make it difficult to walk.” – Meredith Hale, 39, Sleepy Hollow, N.Y.

5. Skip The Little Black Dress

Save your LBD for a wintertime affair. Summer is the perfect opportunity to brighten up your wedding wardrobe. If a patterned number feels too adventurous, stick to shades of blue. From sapphire to navy, this cool color adds vibrance but isn’t too attention-grabbing.

“I'd go with a blue colored dress ... It's neutral like black but adds more color, is appropriate in any setting and still lends itself to fun accessories." – Lauren Ciaccia, Senior Fashion Editor at Stylight

“I love navy dresses, especially in the summer. They look smart and they are just as slimming as black.” – Allison Slater Tate, 41, Orlando, Fla.

“I like to wear a color other than black, especially to a wedding where I am celebrating a happy occasion.” – Christie Maruka, 46, Wall, N.J.

“Black is usually my go-to color because it's just so easy, but if I [don’t] wear black, I would go with jewel tones, as they are pretty flattering for most skin tones.” – Diane Nassy, 44, New Jersey, Philzendia

Iran Arrests Fashion Models In Social Media Crackdown

DUBAI (Reuters) - Iran has launched a new crackdown on social media, arresting fashion models active on photo-sharing websites and a blog website manager after Tehran's top leader declared war on un-Islamic thoughts on the Internet.

Eight members of a modeling network were arrested and accused of publishing photos of women without the obligatory hijab headscarf on the picture-sharing application Instagram, Tasnim news agency said on Sunday.

State television also broadcast live "confessions" of a model who explained she posted photos of herself on Instagram wearing certain clothes or beauty products to earn money through advertisements.

The semi-official student news agency ISNA also reported on Monday the arrest of Mehdi Butorabi, 53, the manager of the popular Persian Blog launched in 2001 as the Iranian equivalent of the Blogger weblog publishing tool.

It provided a vibrant, diverse platform for thousands of young Iranians to express their thoughts.

The Center for Investigation of Organised Crime, a branch of the elite Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC), monitors social media to hunt for evidence of immorality or subversion.

Iran blocks access to Facebook, Twitter and YouTube but millions of Iranians easily get around that by using virtual private networks (VPNs).

However, that does not make them immune from state surveillance. Last year, three men and three women who posted a video of themselves singing and dancing along with a Western pop song were arrested.

Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said on Saturday the Internet was promoting un-Islamic thoughts that should be promptly dealt with.

"This is a real battlefield. The clerics and seminary students should prepare to enter this field and fight against deviations and erroneous thoughts," Khamenei was quoted as saying by his website.

Susan Sarandon Says Sex Is The Secret To Staying Young

Wonder how Susan Sarandon always manages to look so good? The 69-year-old actress puts it down to lots of time in bed ... and we're not talking about sleep.

"Sex -- that’s good for your skin, right?" Sarandon said in an interview with You Magazine when asked about her beauty secret.

The actress, who will turn 70 in October, says someone recently told her she resembled a "young Susan Sarandon," a compliment she thanks her healthy lifestyle for.

Aside from using sun protection, shunning cigarettes, and exercising, Sarandon's prescription for looking and feeling young has a lot to do with positivity.

"You have to take care of yourself," Sarandon said. "To stay young and healthy, you need to weed out toxic things -- and toxic people! Oh, and laugh and have sex -- if you’re lucky enough to find that -- those are really important, too."

Though she's willing to take a compliment, Sarandon says she's not afraid of aging one bit.

Getting older has never made her feel unsexy, she insists. "I never thought of myself as losing any of my sexuality or sensuality or curiosity and life force," she said. "I feel just as sexy as I did when I was younger -- more so, in fact. I see old pictures of myself and I prefer the way I look now because I’ve had more life."

Indeed. Earlier this year, Sarandon got some flack for boldly baring her ample cleavage at the SAG Awards. But she confidently hit back at critics with even more cleavage in a Twitter war.

Her confidence when it comes to aging has gotten her noticed. Sarandon, who has said she'll never have plastic surgery, recently became cosmetics company L'Oreal's brand ambassador.

"When I see people who have had massive work done, to me that isn't beauty -- it is the personification of fear," she said. "It's so unattractive and proves someone is not at one with what's happening naturally."

Prelude to Pitti: Five Upcoming Surprises at Pitti Uomo 90

2016-05-16-1463398177-732504-EVT_KL_5.jpg

Fashion is my addiction and even though I'm undeniably a woman, it is a craving not limited to womenswear.

Actually, watching great menswear on display, on the runway, in the showrooms and worn by real life men offers fantastic inspiration. Not to mention that fashion people are some of the most generous folks I know.

When it comes to fashion, and specifically menswear, Pitti Uomo is the one appointment that any self-respecting fashionista simply cannot miss. Twice a year, Pitti Uomo takes over the beautiful city of Florence and fills it with global fashion lovers, looking for the latest trends and searching for the next groundbreaking designer. This June, celebrating 45 years of Pitti Uomo and 90 editions of the fair, it's all extra special. Because Pitti Uomo, marking the occasion through their theme "P1tt1 Lucky Numb3r5" will feature wondrous appearances and unmatched surprises, events that people will be talking about for years to come.

Following are five of my personal highlights, what I'll be anxiously anticipating for the next month, until I finally arrive in Florence on June 14th.

Karl Lagerfeld has a trick up his fashionable sleeve for Pitti Uomo goers...

Karl Lagerfeld could and should be perfectly content to have already entered all fashion history books with his legendary styling and wondrous lifestyle. Yet the man who could literally sell consumers anything with his elegance, savvy and panache, doesn't seem to ever want to sit on his laurels. This time around, he's coming to Pitti Uomo with a photo exhibit titled "KARL LAGERFELD - Visions of Fashion" but insiders have been whispering that he's going to be making another announcement while there. My lips are sealed for now but what I can say for sure is that this collection of images and many never before published photographs by the great Monsieur Lagerfeld will be showcased creatively throughout Palazzo Pitti's Sala Bianca, which in itself will make for a magical journey. The exhibition is curated by Eric Pfrunder and Gerhard Steidl, and will remain on show in Florence until the 23rd of October, 2016.

Eton dares men to spin the wheel, with their Style Carousel

2016-05-16-1463398230-8195156-EtonSS17.jpg

Lets face it, we seldom get something for nothing, but Swedish brand Eton, makers of beautiful men's shirts (see a teaser image from their SS17 collection, above) that are at once elegant and easy to wear, have another surprise in store for any man in need of some style. It's a digital "spin the wheel" of shirts appropriately called the Style Carousel. The Style Carousel is perfect Swedish engineering at work, an online slot machine of sorts, featuring favorite Eton styles, that all men around the world in need of a style pick-me-up can try their luck on. The actual physical Style Carousel -- originally displayed in Swedish department store Nordiska Companiet -- will be on display at Pitti Uomo, inside the Eton stand and the online contest continues through May 22nd. Finally, don't even get me started about the welcoming atmosphere at the Eton showroom inside the Fortezza da Basso, and their legendary parties during Pitti Uomo. This time around, there will be one thrown just in time for Swedish Midsummer. You can bet I'll be there, with a flower tiara on!

Raf Simons is back in Florence

Raf Simons photographed by Willy Vanderperre

The introduction to the Raf Simons event at Pitti Uomo, titled cryptically "Florence Calling: Raf Simons" doesn't give anything away. Is the former creative force at Jil Sander and Christian Dior returning to his menswear roots? Will Simons be bringing his streamlined silhouettes and clean lines to a new brand, or will the Belgian designer, who also dabbled in furniture design at the start of his career, reinvent himself once again and bring us all along on a new fantastical voyage? Only Simons and the powers that be at Pitti Immagine know the truth, and they aren't talking. But how exciting to see Simons in person, on June 16th, in the midst of a fashion fair that simply teaches men around the world what to wear and how to flaunt it. And if you ask me, I thought his reinventions of those vintage Maison Dior designs, during his stint at the fashion house, were pure elegance at work.

The Pitti Italics special event shines the spotlight on Faust Puglisi

2016-05-16-1463398295-3217219-EVT_puglisi1.jpg

While London honors Sicilian culture with a stunning exhibition at the British Museum, Pitti Uomo celebrates a man who represents those perfect crossroads of Italy and North Africa, along with a few other invasions thrown in to make the island's style even more unique. Fausto Puglisi is a true Sicilian son and at a special event in Florence he will present the international preview of his first menswear capsule collection, together with the 2017 women's resort collection. Personally, I can't wait because I'm in admiration of Puglisi's exciting fashion background which includes stints at Ungaro, featured pieces at favorite LA store Mayfield and his infamous Grecian cheerleader outfits for Nicki Minaj and M.I.A. at Madonna's Super Bowl halftime show in 2012. And not many designers can boast being style icon and editor Anna Dello Russo's favorite, can they?! Well, Puglisi can.

Cartier in Florence... Because we can all have dreams

2016-05-16-1463398329-3726865-PI_NEWS_CARTIER_02.jpg

The last surprise on my list is one that men and women alike can enjoy. It's no accident the Renaissance was born in Florence because the city gives the visitor time to think, to find peace, to ponder world issues. And Pitti Uomo is the perfect event to take place in this magical place. I'm a firm believer that the world will only come together through film, food and fashion. And fine watches of course! So Cartier presenting in Florence their Drive de Cartier watch seems like perfection, the icing on the proverbial fashion cake. Inside a 15th century palazzo, the Drive man will offer a glimpse into the perfect lifestyle, the kind we all dream of attaining and perhaps shop accordingly to achieve. With their tongue-in-cheek tagline, "Cartier in Florence: All you need" the luxury brand is bound to remind us that it is only through feeling good that we can then go out into the world and do our best.

Pitti Uomo runs at the Fortezza da Basso from June 14h to the 17th, 2016.

How To Make Up Your Entire Face Without Using A Makeup Brush

$

Makeup brushes and sponges are great tools to use, especially if you're going for a sculpted beauty look à la Kim Kardashian. But they take up so much space in our cosmetics cases and somehow are always dirty when we need them most. That's why we've slowly started to ditch makeup brushes and go back to basics with finger-friendly makeup.

Using your fingertips to put on face makeup isn't a new concept. Professional artists often prefer this method because it allows them to "warm up" the product, making for a more natural finish. You also get better control during application and are less likely to waste product. Just make sure to start with clean hands to avoid spreading dirt and acne-causing bacteria!

Below are 13 products that will make it really easy to do your makeup without using a set of makeup brushes.

Makeup Products That Don't Require Using A Brush

Top Row (from left to right):

Urban Decay Naked Skin Color Correcting Fluid, $28. Dab on this green-toned corrector to instantly conceal red and irritated skin before applying your foundation or concealer.

Cover FX Correct Click, $18. Don't be fooled by the shape of this color-correcting makeup. Its cream formula makes it easy to target yellow, sallow complexions without leaving behind harsh lines.

Chosungah 22 Hidden Foundation, $38. This mini puff, filled with foundation, is nothing short of amazing. It releases just enough product so that you can cover up uneven areas on your face without going overboard.

Surratt Beauty Real Skin Foundation Wand, $65. With the brush already attached to this tube of foundation, you can simply pop it into your handbag for touch-ups throughout the day.

Maybelline Eyestudio Brow Drama Pomade Crayon, $8.99. It delivers bold pigment with a not-so-stiff crayon that also glides unruly brow hairs into shape.

Benefit 3D Browtones Instant Color Highlights, $24. You'll want to mark your calendars for the July 2016 release of this brow product that gives eyebrows an instant lift and glow.

Middle Row (from left to right):

Milk Makeup Eye Pigment, $24. This cream shadow in a tube ticks off all the major points on our must-have list, including long-lasting formula, rich pigment and crazy cool colors. Smudge it onto your entire eyelid or keep it close to the lash line for a subtle pop.

YSL Mascara Vinyl Couture, $29. Nail the rainbow lashes trend with this vivid mascara that saturates your lashes and gives them lust-worthy length.

Lipstick Queen Frog Prince Blush, $24. Lipstick Queen founder Poppy King has done it again with her magical green beauty products that transform into unique shades of pink depending on the wearer's pH levels. This silky, sheer blush gives cheeks a beautiful, healthy-looking flush.

H&M Beauty Glow-To-Go Highlighter Stick, $9.99. The next time you're shopping at this fast-fashion retailer, we strongly suggest making a beeline to the beauty department to grab this twist-up highlighter that can be used on your entire face.

Bottom Row (from left to right):

Glossier Flavored Balm Dotcom Trio, $30. These mint, cherry and rose flavored balms boast a subtle tint which make them perfect for swiping on your lips, eyes and cheeks.

Lancôme Juicy Shaker, $21. The two distinct hues in this modern lip oil represent the hydrating oil that gives your pout sexy shine and the pigment that delivers a barely-there stain.

Wander Beauty Wanderout Dual Lipstick, $30. Yes, these are lipsticks. But as we've learned through trial and error, they can also pull double-duty as blush.

This 17-Year-Old's Audrey Hepburn Makeup Transformation Will Leave You Speechless

We're constantly searching for ways to channel Audrey Hepburn's timeless style, but this teenager has absolutely nailed it.

Meet Annelies van Overbeek.

The 17-year-old Belgian is astounding people around the world with her skillful use of hair and makeup to transform into actresses including Hepburn and Vivien Leigh, historical figures like Anne Frank, and Disney princesses Belle and Snow White.

Van Overbeek posts the makeup transformations on her Instagram account, along with the vintage fashion finds that help complete her makeovers. Having a good set of natural eyebrows doesn't hurt, either! But if we didn't know her real age, we'd think she was way beyond her years.

We interviewed the uber-creative teen to learn more about how she brings these iconic characters to life. Prepared to be amazed.

The Huffington Post: What inspired you to do these vintage beauty transformations?

Van Overbeek: I have always loved using makeup and hair to transform myself into other people and movie characters. But it really started about a year ago when I cut my hair into a pixie cut and people started telling me I looked like Audrey Hepburn. I wasn't very familiar with anything Old Hollywood-related at all, but when I looked her up I fell in love with the elegance of vintage silver-screen glamour!

HuffPost: Do you do any research beforehand?

Van Overbeek: I wouldn't exactly call it research, but I study the character in question's facial features, expression, the way they sit/stand, etc. And then, I simply try to recreate it as closely as possible.

#AnneFrank

A photo posted by Annelies van Overbeek (@bewitchedquills) on

HuffPost: Who was the first classical character or historical figure you transformed into? How long was the process?

Van Overbeek: The first classical character I ever tried to transform into was Audrey Hepburn, and it took me quite some trial and error to get the look right, but practice makes perfect! Before that, I did dress up as movie characters such as Harry Potter, Hermione Granger and Sansa Stark from "Game of Thrones."

HuffPost: Where do you get the wigs, accessories and clothing to complete the looks? Do you do your own hair and makeup?

Van Overbeek: Yes, I do everything myself. I find most of the stuff in charity shops and on Etsy. I only have one wig, which I bought off Amazon, and the rest of my hairpieces were given to me by my grandmother.

HuffPost: Who takes the photographs? And what type of camera and editing equipment do you use?

Van Overbeek: I take all photographs myself on my iPhone 6S with a tripod and I sometimes use [Photoshop Elements 8] for skin retouching, but I mainly just use the Instagram filters.

HuffPost: What has been your favorite vintage look so far and why?

Van Overbeek: I think out of all the ones I've taken, the first Scarlett O'Hara one came out really well, but I also like my Audrey Hepburn in "Sabrina" one.

HuffPost: What has been the most challenging look?

Van Overbeek: Probably Sherilyn Fenn as "Audrey Horne." Not because of the hair or outfit, because of the eyebrows. That's the only look for which I've had to use face tape so far!

Follow Van Overbeek on Instagram to check out all of her impressive makeup transformations.

Coming Up Roses: This Is NOT Your Grandmother's Perfume

I am in love with rose perfumes...at least a few anyway. Except for the actual flower, and only in white, I have never been the biggest fan of rose anything, especially perfumes. The cloy scent reminds me of the 1977 version of Tea Rose or cheap air freshener.

It wasn't until I discovered Velvet Rose & Oud by Jo Malone that rose perfumes opened up my sensory world...and what a world there was to discover. These five rose scents have completely opened my mind, and have rocked my perfume world (and collection). My current obsession is Milieu Rosa by Odin, a beautiful floral composition blended with spicy rose scents; one word--amazing.

Clockwise Top Left:
Jo Malone Velvet Rose & Oud Intense Cologne features a dark, rich scent of damask rose wrapped in smoky oud wood and spiked with clove. Top Note - Clove; Middle Note - Damask Rose; Base Note - Oud Wood. ($170)

Tom Ford Cafe Rose is a seductive unisex scent. Three precious rose essences marry with exotic spices and dark coffee. Top Notes - Saffron, Black Pepper and May Rose; Middle Notes - Turkish Rose, Bulgarian Rose and Coffee; Base Notes - Incense, Amber, Sandalwood and Patchouli. ($225)

Odin New York Milieu Rosa is a beautiful rose scent with an undeniable modern mix. Fresh, soft, sensual and woodsy, this floral composition blends spicy Moroccan rose, delicate Rose de Mai and honeyed Turkish Rose Otto. Top Notes - Moroccan Rose Absolute, Raspberry, Cassis, Mimosa; Middle Notes - Rose de Mai, Geranium, Jasmine, litsea Cubeba Oil; Base Note - Turkish Rose Otto, Amber Woods, Oak Leaves, Vetiver. ($210)

Annick Goutal Rose Pompon is a fresh rose scent. Dewy light roses are at the heart of the perfume and is enhanced with delicate facets of fruit and woodsy patchouli. Top Notes - Raspberry, Black Currant and Pink Pepper; Middle Notes - Rose and Pink Peony; Base Notes - Musk, Cedar and Patchouli. ($149)

Aerin Rose de Grasse is meticulously crafted with artisanal attention to detail, including the hundred-petaled Rose Centifolia, hand-picked in Grasse, the French capital of perfumery since the 16th century. The pairing of rose and cognac is both intriguing and unexpected. Notes: Rose Centifolia, Bulgarian Rose Otto, Rose Absolute. ($185)
