Stonehill College Puts the New in New England Style

When you think the world's fashion hubs, Massachusetts isn't usually at the top of the list. However, nestled in New England are smatterings of college students with fresh ideas and rebellious attitudes, making for a mecca of unique styles. A half hour from the beautiful city of Boston sits Stonehill College, a small school in the small town of Easton, Massachusetts. Stonehill, founded in 1948, is now an incredibly tight-knit community of 2,500 students.

While some may shudder at the idea of a small school, I find more reasons to love it with every passing day. Our community is full of diverse minds that lead to both innovative ideas and innovative styles. With a sprawling and stunning campus, you can't help but draw daily inspiration from the New England beauty. Despite its size, Stonehill is mighty in opportunities. With over 80 diverse academic programs and seemingly infinite study abroad and internship possibilities, it's easy to get a taste of the "real world," and gain exposure to different cultures while within Stonehill's utopia.

Stonehill's style can be described classily preppy. Preppy is synonymous with put-together, boasting perfectly tailored pieces and crisp, clean lines. And while this style tends to run traditional and professional, I feel that Stonehill students blur the lines that define this label. The fashion world as a whole tends to categorize styles, "preppy," "hipster," "trendsetter," when in actuality, some of the most successful style choices are those that can't be put into words.

Students tend to pull in pieces from several of these stylistic boxes, fusing them together for fun and fashion-forward looks. In the fashion blogging world, Stonehill's style could be represented by the picturesque posts of the talented Mackenzie Horan and Julia Engel. This Fashionista's outfit selection is the perfect representation of the classic, chic and urban style that characterizes the majority of Stonehill students. The clean lines infused with whimsical patterns and warm hues bring out the beauty seen in New England's winter. (Looks like these almost make you forget about how cold it is...almost.)

Fashionable freshman, Katie Lusa, describes her personal style as "earthy, comfortable and ecletic." Like most Stonehill students, she says she wears a lot of solid colors, but "likes to mix it up with something fun that makes a statement, like floral leggings or a purse shaped like a teapot." In this outfit, her maroon skinny jeans tucked into luxe riding boots add to campus' preppy feel. Her animal printed top adds that fun element, drawing the eye into the beautiful detail and flowy, elegant lines.

My favorite part of this Fashionista's look is actually her glasses. In general, I feel that the fashion world has made glasses cool again. Visionary designers like Warby Parker are transforming glasses into must-have accessories as opposed to necessary eyewear. This pair is so versatile. The classic tortoiseshell mixed with the large frames is the perfect infusion of preppy and hipster styles, which students often combine for wonderfully unique looks.

Like this Fashionista, Stonehill students make it simple to showcase their personality through their style. Her beautiful look definitely poses an argument for raising Massachusetts' standing on the stylistic charts.

Katie Fabry is a sophomore majoring in Communication Studies with a minor in Marketing at Stonehill College. Her personal style can be described as urban sophistication rooted in preppy traditionalism. When she's not running all over campus or interning for CollegeFashionista, she can be found obsessing over fashion blogs, daydreaming of Manhattan or planning ways to meet Harry Styles. After college, she hopes to move back to New York and write for a fashion magazine in Manhattan.

Why Paris Fashion Week Is The Ultimate Fashion Week

With fashion month spanning four cities and multiple weeks, it is quite easy for everything to blur into one. Though each destination offers something entirely unique, not all Fashion Weeks are created equal.

New York City is commercial, London is a hotbed for up-and-coming designers and Milan is where trends are established. But Paris is the ultimate.

Between the top designers, amazing fashion and elaborate shows, they certainly save the best for last. Here are seven reasons why it is hard to live up to Paris Fashion Week.

1. The street style. Yes, of course, there is drool-worthy street style in New York, London and Milan, but EVERYONE in the fashion world makes a point of attending Paris Fashion Week, which means there is rarely an outfit that is not street style bait.

2. The seat attendants. In New York, PR girls dressed in all black rush you to your seat should you require assistance, but in Paris cute French boys dressed in suits escort you to your row. Needless to say, countless show-goers "have needed help" finding their seats.

pr

3. The extra touches. Only in Paris would you find handwritten calligraphy and a single flower at each seat.

4. The venues. Nope, we aren't at Lincoln Center anymore.

5. You are really there to see a show. Models don't simply walk down the runway during Paris Fashion Week, you get entertained. There is live music, ambiance and something unexpected usually goes down. Like at Issey Miyake, where the models got dressed ON the catwalk.

6. The invitations. Often hand-delivered, it is not uncommon for the invitations to be as special as the shows themselves. This season, Kenzo sent out invitations with a light inside.

7. And most importantly, the biggest designers show in the City of Light. From Raf Simons to Karl Lagerfeld to Hedi Slimane, the gods of fashion are in Paris.

Furry Accessories Are The Hottest Trend At Paris Fashion Week

Ever since Céline made furry shower shoes happen, it has been pretty clear that the fashion world is up for anything unusual and fuzzy. So we weren't shocked to see furry accessories taking over the runway at Paris Fashion Week.

Between fluffy clutches at Kenzo and fur sandals at Vionnet, this new trend is just the latest ugly-chic fad we have seen during Fashion Week so far.

So, are you going to be wearing a furry belt come September?

Chrissy Teigen Is A Sleek Goddess At The Oscars After-Party

Oh Chrissy, you can truly do no wrong.

Mrs. John Legend arrived at the Oscars on Sunday night in an extremely elegant Monique Lhuillier gown, complete with pockets (for ample live-tweeting, we learned). She looked gorgeous, as usual, but perhaps her even more exciting moment of the night came at the Vanity Fair after-party, where she channeled Jessica Rabbit in a sparkly black stunner with a thigh-high slit.

Not everyone could pull off this sexy look while still appearing super glamorous, but of course, Chrissy nails it. And we would expect no less from the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue cover star.

What do you think of her sleeker second look?

Taylor Swift has become a staple on the award show circuit, whether she's nominated or not, and Sunday night was no exception.

Swift spent her evening watching the Oscars at the 22nd Annual Elton John AIDS Foundation Academy Awards Viewing Party, before heading over the ultra-exclusive Vanity Fair Oscar Party with pal Jaime King on March 2.

The 24-year-old superstar once again channeled old-Hollywood glamour in a slinky, sparkly black Julien Macdonald gown.

At the Vanity Fair bash, Swift rubbed elbows with the industry's biggest stars, caught up with former tourmate Ed Sheeran, and posed for photos with King, Ireland Baldwin and model Gigi Hadid.

Nicole Jenkins, Inglot Makeup Artist, Mixes Up The Perfect Red Lipstick

The way our minds are wired, we can't help but notice a woman wearing red lipstick on the street. So, when we spotted Inglot makeup artist Nicole Jenkins' bright red pout, we just had to find out the exact color she was sporting. It turns out she was actually wearing a combination of two Inglot lip shades.

"It's just an orange and a red mixed together. I start with the orange and layer the red on top," explained Jenkins. "It looks more neon than a traditional red."

Isn't it the perfect red lipstick?

'Chanel Shopping Center' Is The Coolest Thing At Paris Fashion Week Fall 2014, Of Course

Imagine walking into your local supermarket, getting ready to do a food shop, and instead of your typical brands you saw ... all Chanel everything. Now imagine you're surrounded by models dressed in the fashion house's latest designs while you browse. Oh, and you're also smack dab in the middle of Paris Fashion Week.

Sounds like a dream, right?

Well, that was the reality for Chanel showgoers at Paris Fashion Week on Tuesday. Aptly titled the "Chanel Shopping Center," the show transformed the Grand Palais into a mecca of "goods" draped with that iconic C logo we all know and love.

The internet exploded immediately with photos of everything from editors pretending to shop to Cara Delevingne and Karl Lagerfield walking hand in hand through the market. Even Kendall Jenner showed up, further cementing her place in the high-fashion industry. And what Chanel show would be complete without an appearance by our girl Rihanna, who, of course, rolled around the runway in a shopping cart.

Uncle Karl is a master of the runway show, so it's not really surprising that one of the most exciting moments of any Fashion Week thus far came from him. Head to style.com to see the entire collection, and check out some of our favorite moments as-told-by-Instagram below.

Ellen DeGeneres Gives Oscars Pizza Delivery Man $1,000 Tip

They say good things come to those who wait, and that couldn't be more true for Edgar Martirosyan, the unsuspecting pizza delivery man who made his national television debut on Sunday, March 2, delivering three Big Mama's & Papa's pies to the star-studded audience at the 86th annual Academy Awards.

Immediately after his delivery there were reports that Martirosyan left empty-handed, but his patience was rewarded with a whopping $1,000 tip when he appeared on "The Ellen Show" on Monday. DeGeneres revealed that she used Pharrell's hat to collect $600 from the audience, and topped it off with $400 of her own money.

Martirosyan also revealed that his delivery wasn't a pre-planned stunt and he was just as surprised as the audience to discover he'd be bringing pizza to the likes of Meryl Streep, Jennifer Lawrence and one of his favorite actresses, Julia Roberts.

According to Martirosyan, he got a call to deliver 20 pizzas for the writers of the show at the Dolby Theatre, only to be led on stage by DeGeneres, completely unaware of where she was really taking him.

If there is a lesson to be learned from this, it's always follow Ellen DeGeneres without a second thought.

The Sounds of Fashion Week

$

The majority of the world looks at Fashion Week as only catwalks, stick-thin models, and of course clothes. Clothes, clothes and more clothes. Clothes in all colors, shapes and size. Clothes you love, clothes you hate, but certainly not clothes you or I could ever afford.

Designers see Fashion Week as their chance to show the world their art. The runway is a stage, and dresses, pants, blouses and suits are the players. And, just like any good musical or movie, music is the best support one could ask for. While attendees and photographers come to see what we'll all be wearing in half a year (or, what the rich and fabulous of us will be wearing), it's hard to imagine what a show would be without a little walking music. Designers are inspired by music and often choose what's heard at their shows in order to match it perfectly with their artistic vision.

This year, I was lucky enough to take part in the festivities, watching how models walked to the music, and getting to experience the effect music had on how you see the collection. Below is a playlist of the ten best tracks I heard all week, as well as what designer chose them. Check out the brand and their collection as you listen to the music and see if it heightens your view of the gowns and garb being shown.

Here's your challenge: Click the designer's name to watch the collection on mute and listen to the chosen song. That way, you'll see just how brilliant these choices really are.

Daft Punk - "The Game Has Changed" (at CuteCircuit)

CuteCircuit is a brand based around the meeting point of fashion and technology. While their dresses and accessories are beautiful enough to hold their own, when you turn off the lights and turn on your phone, the sewn-in LED lights and screens go live and the clothes become something else entirely. Daft Punk's incredible score for the Tron movie is the perfect accompaniment for such innovation.

Blood Orange - "On The Line (Star Slinger Remix)" (at Noon By Noor)

Bliss - "La Mamounia Theme" (at Tadashi Shoji)

Tomas Barford - "November Skies (ft. Nina Kinert)" (at Georgine)

Nina Kinert's beautiful, breathy vocals perfectly match the upcoming Georgine collection, and Tomas Barford's all-too-cool beats provided the perfect rythym to walk to. If this song doesn't scream Fashion Week, nothing does.

Mikky Ekko - "Kids (Oliver Nelson Remix)" (at Rebecca Vallance)

New Order - "Age of Consent" (at Leila Shams)

Fred Astaire - "Cheek to Cheek" (at Venexiana)

Venexiana is the baddest chick in the game -- and don't get me wrong, the rest of her playlist would prove it. The designer's shows are usually a who's who of 1970's punk rock, which is the perfect contrast to her bejeweled gowns, ready for the Oscars or whatever fancy benefit you're running of to tonight (ha!). Somehow, hearing Sid Vicious screaming at you as a beautiful blonde walks in pink silk is always magnificent. The Fred Astaire choice was a genuinely sweet moment, and one that caught me off gaurd.

Four Tet - "Lions (Jamie XX Remix)" (at Katya Leonovich)

Coeur de pirate - "You Know I'm No Good" (at Lie Sang Bong)

David Bowie - "Suffragette City" (at Jay Godfrey)

Rock n roll was everywhere at Jay Godfrey's New York Fashion Week debut -- in the clothes, in the model's eyes, and certainly in the music. As is a rare treat at Fashion Week, Jay actually had Beau Croxton playing his electric guitar live. If the black leather wasn't saying it loud and clear, you can bet having a shaggy-haired rocker next to you did the trick.

If you've worked your way through all ten, congratulations! Now do this five times over with no sleep and no food. Welcome to fashion.

Just another reason to obsess over Jessica Alba's hair.

The actress and healthy lifestyle guru was just named beauty brand ambassador for the grooming tools company, Braun. Expect flowing locks and pretty looks, as Alba will be featured in a multi-platform campaign launching this month.

Tea Tree Oil For Your Body: What You Need To Know

$

It seems that an essential oil craze has been sweeping the nation. You can't even mention coconut oil without hearing how many ways women and men use the product to relieve their bodily woes. So if coconut can have all its glory, it's about time we put the spotlight on another formula.

Tea tree oil is somewhat of a mystery to us. Sure, we've heard of it, but what does it really do? We talked to two dermatologists to investigate the good and the bad of the fragrant oil. Read on to find out what we learned.

tea tree oil

Tea tree oil actually has antibacterial properties.

The component responsible for tea tree oil's bacteria-fighting abilities is "believed to be terpenes," explains Aurora DeJuliis, a dermatologist and aesthetician who runs the Aurora DeJuliis, MD European Medical Spa in New Jersey. "Terpenes is a type of volatile oil that has been shown to destroy bacteria."

Tea tree oil is particularly good for you from the neck up.

If you've heard that this essential oil could help treat acne, you've heard right. "Tea tree oil works on pimples because it has disinfecting and soothing properties," says Dr. DeJuliis. The oil penetrates the blockage between your skin and sebaceous glands and it's also good at "disinfecting the pores, and drying out whiteheads and blackheads," she says.

And get this: You can use tea tree oil in your hair. Dr. DeJuliis says that there are shampoos that have the oil in them to help fight dry and itchy scalps, but it's also able to combat your dandruff. Tea tree oil "is also effective in treating dandruff because of the different moisturizing properties of the oil," she explains.

But watch out, this is a liquid you want to keep far away from your mouth. Tea tree oil "is dangerous if taken by mouth. It can cause serious side effects such as confusion, inability to walk, unsteadiness, rash and coma," says board-certified dermatologist Dr. Janet Prystowsky.

The next time you have athlete's foot, give this oil a try.

Tea tree oil is "useful in treating different fungal infections, such as athlete's foot, or fungal infections of the nail,” Dr. DeJuliis says. But just because tea tree oil can work on damaged nails, doesn't mean it works on other kinds of bacterial infections.

Dr. Prystowsky explains that many of tea tree oil's supposed benefits haven't actually been proven: "There is insufficient evidence for rating the effectiveness of tea tree oil for cold sores, allergic reactions in the skin to nickel, yeast infections in the mouth, throat and vaginal infections" or other issues like lice and ringworm, she says.

People with sensitive skin might want to steer clear of tea tree oil.

Both dermatologists point out that the essential oil could be harsh on sensitive skin types -- Dr. Prystowsky adds "anyone with a tendency for eczema should proceed cautiously when using tea tree oil." However, if you do want to try the oil, make sure to remember these key tips:

Make sure to have a diluted solution on hand.

"It is probably best to buy tea tree oil already in the dilution needed rather than mixing it yourself," Dr. Prystowsky advises. But there are some DIY ways that will help you make the oil less severe. "Add a couple drops to aloe vera gel, and then apply the gel to pimples or blemishes. You can also add a couple teaspoons of tea tree oil to raw organic honey." Another mixing oil on the list is jojoba, "because jojoba oil is very similar to the oil produced naturally by the skin."

Dr. DeJuliis even gave us the recipe for one of her favorite DIY face masks. (Because of the tomatoes in the ingredients, this is catered toward those with oilier, acne-prone skin that can handle the acid.)

Dr. DeJuliis's Face Mask

Ingredients:
3 drops of tea tree oil
1 tsp of jojoba oil
½ a finely chopped tomato

Instructions: Mix until you have a smooth paste and apply this mask to your face for 10 minutes. Then wash off.

Or, just use an entirely different formula.

Dr. DeJuliis recommends alternatives like lavender, geranium, manuka and rosemary oils that are gentler on the skin than tea tree, but perform just as well. But, if there is any doubt, Dr. Prystowsky tells us we should consult the professionals. "Consulting your physician/dermatologist would be the best way to determine what accepted medications may be appropriate for your [particular] condition." So if you're using oils or herbs as alternatives to traditional medicine, you should probably do your research.

We agree -- if you are nervous about using alternative remedies that include tea tree oil, try performing a patch test first on your inner arm. And of course, it's always in your best interest to first consult a doctor before starting any new skincare regimens.

Marilyn Monroe's Alleged Kennedy Sex Tape Saved From Auction

Marilyn Monroe just got really, really close to being very, very exposed … allegedly.

Former bodyguard and active memorabilia collector William Castleberry claims that he has the only copy of an 8mm reel featuring a sexual encounter between Marilyn Monroe, John F. Kennedy and Robert F. Kennedy. Of course, no one else has been witness to said tape, so you'll just have to take Castleberry's word for it.

Castleberry claims he's kept the footage private out of respect for his good friend, Monroe's ex-husband Joe DiMaggio. Recently, his ownership of the film was threatened as it was among the items seized and sent to auction as a way for Castleberry to pay off a $200,000 court judgment against him.

The sex tape was scheduled to hit the auction block on Tuesday, March 4, but the auction was canceled as the debt has been settled.

Sounds like the world is just going to have to wait to see if this famous ménage à trois really exists.

This isn't the first time that a collector has tried to reel in cash by selling Monroe's sex appeal. Back in 2011, Spanish collector Mikel Barka attempted to auction a pornographic film of Marilyn Monroe in her early 20s. However, the tape did not receive a single bid and was judged to be fake based on the hairline of the woman featured.

How Do You Wear Your Life? #Gucci, #Gratitude

2014-03-01-image.jpg

We live in a society steeped in fashion. From a very early age, we are faced with the daily question, "What should I wear today?" In the very beginning, the question is posed to and answered by our parents. Oh! What fun so many of us have as mommies dressing our wee ones! So often our efforts are rewarded with "S/he is so adorable in that little outfit!" or"Oh, how precious!"

All too soon we become the stewards of our fashion. Often we begin as early as toddlers... kicking and screaming when being dressed in clothes not to our liking. Perhaps it is the fabric, the fit, the overall feeling it places upon us. We grow and, as we do, our clothes continually change. We begin to discover our preferences; style, fit, color, etc. Before we know it, we are immersed in a society obsessed with fashion. "What are you wearing?", "Who are you wearing?", "What will you wear to the (fill in the blank)?" It's amazing we have the time to focus on the substance of a day.

Well, I suppose it makes sense... after all, our appearance is an outward portrayal of our selves, which we present to the world. So, shouldn't we be more concerned with our manner, demeanor, expression, and attitude?

Before you clothe yourself with your fashion choice du jour, whether it might be Gucci or Mizrahi, why not ask yourself: "How will I wear my life today?" Do you even think about it? Do you cover it with an outer shell? Do you mask it behind a blank stare or a frown? Are you so far removed that you do not even feel an awareness? Or do you wear the light that can shine from within you and dress it in a smile clothed in threads of gratitude? Do you accessorize with grace, respect and kindness... or simply don baubles and bangles?

Do you light up a room with your sheer presence and energy? Or do you project your latest dismal situation? The outer image you project is most probably a reflection of how you feel. Do you choose to wear your life as a beautiful statement, or do you choose to wear worry, sadness and misfortune?

If we spent half the time thinking about presenting ourselves that we spend on shopping, primping and grooming, well I suspect we just might find ourselves in the middle of a decent society... one that is steeped in value and worth. Might I suggest that you wear your life, all of it, its richness and myriad of experience; the good, the bad and the ugly? Consider this... if you wear your life honestly, with a gracious nature, steeped in gratitude, then you will shine and you will always be in style.

Now, I am not suggesting that you pay no mind to your choices of clothing and accessories. I am simply recommending that, first and foremost, you consider how to present your self. Our selves are best served when we wear kindness, empathy, and gratitude.

So go ahead .. wear your life with gratitude, grace and gusto! After all, life is what you make it. Make yours shine, and by all means... wear it well!

Cameron Diaz Preaches Importance Of Pubic Hair (VIDEO)

If you need a refresher on human anatomy, Cameron Diaz can teach you a thing or two.

The 41-year-old actress got real personal when she visited "Chelsea Lately" on Monday night to discuss her new project, "The Body Book." A self-proclaimed "science nerd," Diaz felt that there is still a lot of things we don't know about our bodies.

Diaz addressed giving up smoking, Diet Coke and other guilty habits with Handler. However, the no-holds-barred host got down and dirty when she asked about the part of the book that delves into the labia. (No pun intended.) On the purpose of pubic hair, Diaz said:

Since we used to be covered in hair, and now we're not except for a few places, I figure there's a purpose for that hair. So I put some of the purposes for it and I also suggest that no matter how you enjoy grooming it throughout your life -- whether it's shave it all off, wax it all off, put a bull's-eye, birthday cake, I don't care -- just, girls, think about not taking it all off forever.

While dating pressures have often forced us to keep things tidy "down there," we love that Diaz has reminded us that it's important to love our bodies just the way they are.

How do you feel about pubic hair grooming?

Today is Shrove Tuesday -- also known as Fat Tuesday, Mardi Gras, or Pancake Day in the United Kingdom. Whatever you call it, today is the day to eat all the fatty foods you can get your hands on before Ash Wednesday, the first day of Lent.

Pancake Day might be one of our favorite iterations of Shrove Tuesday, because who doesn't love an excuse to eat pancakes? This year, on the heels of probably the most famous selfie in history on Oscars night, it's fitting that Pancake Day 2014 is meant for more than eating pancakes. It is also meant for taking pancake selfies.

In honor of Pancake Day, cookware company Tefal has created a hilarious online tool called the Pancake Selfie Maker for turning your selfies into pancakes -- because why wouldn't you want to look like a pancake? See how these 12 celebrities stack up, and go to TefalPancakeDay.co.uk to make your own.

Naomi Campbell Rocks An Afro For A Hot Second And We Love It

Naomi Campbell's signature bone straight hair is just as legendary as her modeling career and bad behavior. And while we've seen the British bombshell rock a plethora of hairstyles -- including blonde, short and nearly bald-- it's rare she ever goes the au natural route.

Well, that changed this past week when the stunning supermodel traded in her silky hairpiece for a kinky Afro wig. "The Face" judge debuted the eye-catching look Thursday on The Graham Norton Show. And it didn't end there. Naomi also sported the 'do Monday while taping an episode of "The View" and while chatting it up with the hip hop heads over at "106 & Park."

But just when we thought this could be a permanent and fabulous new look for the fashion icon, the Afro's stylish streak came to a halt Monday night on "Late Night with Seth Meyers," after Naomi walked out wearing a wavy weave.

Sigh. Well, it was fab while it latest!

Check out Naomi's awesome Afro moment below. Don't you think she should keep rocking it?

Kate Middleton is just a month away from her trip to Australia, where she will reportedly reveal a royal makeover, as ordered by Queen Elizabeth II.

Perhaps that's why she took the opportunity Monday night (March 3) to take a break from mommy duty to go on a date with Prince William.

The Duchess looked as gorgeous as ever in a head-to-toe black ensemble, complete with a coat we can't stop drooling over and adorable heeled booties. Our favorite royal pair headed to a local bar in London to celebrate a friend's birthday, the Daily Mail reports.

We love seeing Kate all glammed up, but we have to admit we prefer the more casual look for a night out on the town. Now, if only we could have gotten into that party ...

Head over to Daily Mail to see the entire outfit.

How Broke Girls From History Lived Out Their Fashion Fantasies

As someone who helps people commission original, personalized art, I've noticed that illustrated fashion makeovers are on the rise. Clients on my site, ArtCorgi, are commissioning art of themselves and their loved ones in which gorgeous clothes, jewelry and accessories are added.

These pieces enable my clients to live out their fashion fantasies without splurging on elaborate veils and evening gowns. Charmed by this practice, I was prompted to explore how budget-savvy fashionistas have gotten their style kicks in the past.

While there were plenty of royals and nobles who commissioned work depicting themselves in expensive clothes they owned, there are even more common folk who indulged their fashionable passions through less expensive artist means. Four particularly fun examples can be seen with portraits, fashion prints, fashion dolls and porcelain figurines.

Portraits:

Well before any other vicarious form of sartorial enjoyment entered the scene, everyday fashion lovers turned to portraits and paintings of wealthy nobility. Though they may never be able to afford a pearl-encrusted gown or skirts made with endless yards of mind-bogglingly expensive cloth, they could nevertheless admire paintings of them, many of which could be seen in various halls and churches that were open to the public.

Fashion Plates:

Not depicting any figure in particular, these illustrations, which were distributed as stand-alone prints and through women's periodicals, enabled everyday fashion lovers to imagine themselves in the day's hottest garments.

Fashion plates first came on the scene in the late 1700s. Their heyday lasted for a good 200 years. Though they're clearly not the means by which normal people live out fashionable fantasies today, fashion plates have become a popular collector's item. To peruse some fun examples, swing by the Myrtle Tyrrell Kirby Fashion Plate Collection shown on the Claremont Colleges Digital Library.

Fashion Dolls:

Before fashion plates brought fashion to the masses, fashion dolls were used to show the latest "it" dresses at reasonable costs. Given the high cost of producing high quality fabric and obtaining expensive materials such as silk, fashion dolls became a great means by which designers could share dress samples without sacrificing expensive yards of cloth.

According to James Laver's Costume and Fashion, one of Marie Antoinette's dressmakers toured the continent on a regular basis with wagons featuring fashion dolls wearing the queen's latest styles. In other cases, fashion dolls were sent from one city to the next, enabling local designers to investigate a new style and then pass it on. One might imagine such exhibitions were the closest thing many ordinary Europeans had to a fashion show.

In the mid to late 1860s, fashion dolls began to be more popularly used as children's toys and became less about exhibition for adults. These dolls have since evolved into the "fashion" dolls we know and love today, the most famous of which goes by the name Barbie. Who knew Barbie's ancestors used to go on tour!

Porcelain Figurines:

Though fashion dolls eventually evolved into childrens' toys, many fans of fashion collected porcelain figurines. In addition to showcasing beautiful, flowing costumes and garments, these figures also frequently exhibited references to contemporary pop culture and classic odes to classic literature and entertainment.

The dolls pictured above dated from the mid 1700s. What with their fancy clothing and references to characters from the Commedia dell'arte, they're not too different from the culture-inspired magazine spreads we admire today! Funny how little some things change.
