CRWN Is The Empowering New Natural Hair Magazine The World Needs

CRWN is a new natural hair and lifestyle magazine that aims to amplify the experiences of women of color with curls and afros to celebrate them like they are queens.

The magazine, which debuted last year with a small zine, is a print-first, quarterly publication that is set to release its first official issue on Aug. 27 at AfroPunk Brooklyn, a music festival that celebrates black artists and culture.

“CRWN is truly a lifestyle magazine,” Lindsey Day, the co-founder and editor-in-chief of the magazine, told The Huffington Post. “We are serving a woman who is more educated, well-traveled and sophisticated than ever before — largely because generations before us have fought to ensure our seats at the table.”

Day, along with CRWN co-founder and creative director Nkrumah Farrar, built a full-service lifestyle magazine that aims to touch on all the complexities and experiences of black women. Together, Day and Farrar aim to create a space that takes back the narrative around natural hair, sets new standards of beauty and promotes their mission around sisterhood, authenticity and self-love.

“When readers open issue one of CRWN magazine, they will essentially read our manifesto,” Day said. “What begins as a conversation about natural hair — hair inspiration, styling and haircare tips — extends to address the whole woman, the black woman in her totality.”

The magazine’s first issue will be filled with essays, profiles of entrepreneurs and stylists, as well as compelling content around beauty, fashion, finance, dating, health, travel and entertainment. Popular natural hair vlogger Whitney White stars on the cover of the magazine and the cover story, written by Black Voices Senior Editor Lilly Workneh, includes a foreword by image activist Michaela Angela Davis.

The photography in CRWN alone is breathtaking. Women of various ages, shades, backgrounds and hairstyles are reflected throughout the magazine to celebrate the diversity among us all.

“Above all, we want women to open CRWN Magazine and see themselves. Most of our subjects aren’t models; they’re real women and they’re absolutely beautiful!” Day said. “We want to convey a different aesthetic and sensibility, one that feels more real and attainable to our reader; and that feels like a premium experience as they flip through it.”

Farrar, who worked heavily on the magazine’s creative vision, says the overall aesthetic behind CRWN was designed to help build esteem among black women and to make powerful statements through words, graphics and visuals.

“The photography in CRWN Magazine has a certain sense of gravity, there’s also a certain amount of affection you can see for the subject,” Farrar told HuffPost. “It’s very much polished and for the marketplace, but it has soul.”

As for building a broader reach, Farrar believes CRWN will also have strong appeal among men because it celebrates a natural beauty he believes many men admire.

“The fact of the matter is, there are these ideas of what women think men want to see, that are largely driven by the mainstream conception of what beauty is; then there’s the truth of how black men want to see black women,” he said. “And the biggest part of that truth is that black men want to see the realness.”

Day and Farrar have big plans for CRWN. They see it not just as a magazine but as a platform that will help to promote businesses, brands and relationships. They expect the magazine to soar and there’s no doubt it will after the support they have already received from a robust audience that is eager to consume CRWN and has already submitted pre-orders

“We created CRWN for the love of our people, to uplift and celebrate our sisters and their beautiful natural hair,” Day said. “We’re doing this for our people, for the culture.”

Kanye West Is Opening 21 Pablo Pop-Up Shops This Weekend

Are you one of the many people still waiting to feel like “Pablo” by way of Kanye West’s almighty, coveted merch?

Well, if you live in what looks like pretty much any major city, you might be in luck. In his ongoing quest for global domination, West will open 21 pop-up Pablo stores this weekend at locations across the globe.

The usual suspects like New York and Los Angeles will host mob scenes pop-ups, while cities as far as Cape Town and Singapore will get their own namesake stores, too. According to Vogue, the product in each store will be specific to its home city, and “will have its name spelled out on tees and hoodies with Cali Thornhill DeWitt’s gothic script in a myriad of bold shades reminiscent of the collection West showed at Madison Square Garden in February.”

Of course, everything Mr. West touches turns to gold, so if you have grand plans to visit one of these shops, prepare to wait in line and risk walking away empty handed. Although, you just might end up spending less money booking a flight to another city’s shop than buying the inevitably marked-up goods later on Ebay

Amber Rose Reps A Genius Eyelash Tool You're Going To Want ASAP

Amber Rose regularly helps the world be a more sex positive, feminist and self-affirming place with her social media presence alone. Now, she’s lending her services to something we all could use a little help with: fake eyelash application.

In what feels like the least expected development of all time, Rose is now the face of an Estée Lauder brand, Flirt Cosmetics

According to Racked, Rose has spent much of her time promoting Flirt on social media but was still surprised herself when the brand approached her to be its face. “I’m tatted, bald headed, I talk about sex like really raunchy, but I’m very sex positive, but I just speak my mind. Are you sure you want me for your brand?,” she said, adding, “It’s the perfect match. I am their modern-day woman.”

Sold exclusively online and described in a release as “cutting-edge, rule-breaking, fun, and sexy” (words that could also easily describe Rose), its first, super innovative product launch is Flirt Flashes ― a small contraption that looks like a white-out dispenser, but actually assists in applying false eyelashes at the touch of a button.

Genius, right?

Flirt Flashes will retail for $28 and launches September 15. All us muvas will be waiting with bated breath and unadorned eyelashes until then.

Twitter queen Chrissy Teigen has heard enough about Ryan Lochte’s alleged assault in Rio ― she’s done, and she’s letting everyone know it.

On Thursday, the model expressed her frustration and annoyance with what she called Lochte’s “stupid as shit gas station international incident” in a series of tweets.

Teigen pointed out that there are other issues going on in the world that deserve attention, such as the recent airstrikes in the Aleppo, Syria:

When one commenter tweeted a story about the model’s stretch marks ― which made its way around the web this week ― in order to point out the headlines she inspired herself, Teigen gave this perfect answer:

We feel you, Chrissy. Unfortunately, the internet is a vast place filled with stories ― some extremely important, some extremely stupid.

What To Expect From Whoopi Goldberg's Reality Show About Transgender Models

If you've experienced model-competition show fatigue at any point in America's Next Top Model's 12-year, 22 season run (and counting), Whoopi Goldberg has your fix. Strut, a new show about Slay Model Management -- the world's first transgender modeling agency -- premieres on Tuesday, September 20, on Oxygen, and Goldberg is the project's executive producer. The show chronicles the burgeoning careers of six transgender models repped by Slay. Think: ANTM, but much more poignant (and minus the campy contest factor).

The show aims to add traction and visibility to today's transgender community, and connect them to viewers based on a set of common, core struggles and values. "Our models come from all walks of life; all different backgrounds and ethnicities. They are struggling with things we can all relate to -- trying to make ends meet, fighting to make a name for themselves and navigating the minefields of personal relationships," Goldberg said in a release. "All of these struggles are amplified by the fact that they are also fighting to break down barriers and taking on the responsibility of representing the transgender community in today's society. It's time to separate caricature from real people, and that's what we are doing with Strut."

The cast includes ANTM alum Isis King, Instagram star Laith De La Cruz, Dominique Jackson, Arisce Wanzer, and Ren Spriggs. The show's trailer features one-liners like, "They want a girl that's 6'2", 35-25-25 -- they didn't ask if you have a penis or not." There are also thoughts on shifting industry perceptions of trans models: "A decade ago, we were hiding on the runways. But now, it's a new age." These are tangible signs of progress, but they also underscore the amount of work that still needs to be done.

When the show airs next month, we're expecting your typical reality TV show sizzle, of course (the micro-spats, the egos, some drink-throwing drama), but underneath all of that, the subject matter is sure to encompass some sensitive plot points that need to be on television. Here's hoping Strut walks the walk. Check out the trailer, below.

Yes, This Is A Head Hammock For Napping On Planes And It's Amazing

A hammock for your head sounds like the perfect nap time accessory, especially while traveling.

The NodPod, created by Paula Blankenship of Heirloom Traditions Paint in Kentucky, is a memory foam head pillow that is attached to the headrest of a plane, train or automobile with Velcro, and sits under the chin to support the neck.

Blankenship’s patent focuses on the over-the-seat attachment.

“That gives it loft and height,” she told The Huffington Post. “You don’t have any forward head motions. It looks ugly, but it feels fantastic. I just came back from London, and I have never in my life slept on a flight. I slept the entire trip.”

Their site explains the problem we’ve all faced:

The reason it’s hard to rest or sleep while traveling is because you can’t keep your head, neck and back perpendicular and at a 90-degree angle similar to how you sleep in bed at night. This patented solution provides the solution to amazing sleep while traveling by recreating how you sleep on a bed, but in an upright position.

NodPod is currently looking for Kickstarter support to get off the ground. Over 2,000 people have already helped propel their goal of $20,000 to almost $80,000 with 21 days left in the fundraising.

For Blankenship, it’s a lifelong dream realized.

“This has been my passion on my life… and at 53 it feels good to finally do something and see it through with a patent. This time, I just said, you know ... ‘I’m going to make this happen.’”

As far as travel hacks go, one that may lead to better sleep is pretty appealing. Otherwise, tricks like choosing a seat with minimal distractions and dining before the flight takes off to avoid interruptions might help you get some ZZZs, too.

The Ultimate List Of Flattering Makeup For Redheads

$

2016-08-18-1471544204-7216240-opener.jpg
Photographed by Ian Barling.

It's been an exciting few years for redheads: The gorgeous Julianne Moore won her first Oscar for Still Alice, Joan Holloway made her grand exit on the finale of Mad Men, and the Titian-haired sisters Adrienne Vendetti Hodges (pictured left) and Stephanie Vendetti (right), founders of the website How to Be A Redhead, nabbed a book deal of the same name. As these women prove, the redhead is almost always the most striking woman in the room, yet the beauty industry doesn't typically cater to her. Finding makeup that complements her often fair, freckled, and sensitive skin, as well as her strawberry to copper-hued tresses, is not an easy task. So, in 2011, these sisters decided to change that.

"We felt like there wasn't an outlet for [redhead] women to go to and feel like they're trendy and beautiful, and get really great advice," Adrienne tells us. "I'm two years older than Stephanie, so we're very close and as kids we used to joke that we knew how to be redheads because we were so into beauty products. We used to joke that we were going to come out with a book on how to be a redhead, and it was always on the backs of our minds. So, after college we were like, 'You know what? We're going to do it!' We started it as a little blog, and in just two weeks' time we were overwhelmed with so many people writing in and all the people who are passionate about being redheads."

Clearly, there was a gaping hole in the market, but since How to Be A Redhead's inception (or was it its influence?) many makeup companies have started carrying shades that flatter more than just blondes and brunettes. We asked the sisters, who have since added L'Oréal brand ambassador titles to their résumés, to recommend the "redhead-friendly" (their term) products they swear by, including a brow gel they developed with Billion Dollar Brows. Plus, they've got tips on everything from wearing the right blush to making your freckles pop. Read on, redheads: You're in for a treat.

SPF
"We apply this right after we cleanse and apply oils or face lotion. SPF is the first step in our makeup process because we always want to protect our redhead skin. We burn so easily. It comes in a pump tube, and the product itself is clear. It literally disappears into the skin and feels, almost, like a powder. We don't even realize we have SPF 30 on our faces. It's a miracle!" -- Stephanie

Loose Power
"You hardly feel like you have makeup on, and it gives great, natural coverage. Usually, redheads have noticeable veins on their eyelids and underneath the eyes. With a few swipes of this powder all over the face, the skin looks perfect. It's a wonderful base." -- Adrienne

Make Up For Ever Super Matte Loose Powder, $29, available at Sephora.

2016-08-18-1471544414-8247826-image6.jpg

Liquid Foundation
"It's very rare for redheads with fair skin to find the perfect foundation. The pigments are either too red or too gray, but these are the perfect shades. And, there are up to five different shades for fair skin. I love it because it doesn't cover my freckles." -- Stephanie

"A great tip is if you want your freckles to pop, apply the foundation. Then, dip a Q-tip in water and gently dot on your face to expose your freckles. That way, you have coverage and expose your beautiful 'sun kisses.'" -- Adrienne

The sisters actually recently did a YouTube video with Clinique about this product because they love it so much. Adrienne uses "Alabaster" and Stephanie uses "Fair."

Clinique Beyond Perfecting Foundation and Concealer, $27, available at Clinique.

2016-08-18-1471544468-9025108-image7.jpg

Concealer
"Redheads usually have very sensitive skin, so when it comes to concealer, it's essential to find one that doesn't irritate the eye area and gives good coverage. This is definitely one of the best we've tried, and believe me, we've tried hundreds. We love Tarte, and the founder is a redhead! So, we're always partial to the line." -- Stephanie

Tarte Maracuja Creaseless Concealer, $25, available at Tarte.

2016-08-18-1471544502-2857701-image8.jpg

Eyebrows
"The best part about this product is every type of redhead, whether strawberry-blonde or auburn, can use it. The color is universal among redheads." -- Stephanie

Billion Dollar Brows Hint Of Tint, $18, available at How To Be A Redhead.

2016-08-18-1471544580-1913369-image10.jpg

Mascara
"Redheads [often] have coarse hair, so eyebrows and lashes are similar. It's our personal preference, but we don't use an eyelash curler, and that's why we love this mascara. It curls our redhead eyebrows and adds color!" -- Stephanie

"We have this mascara in brown and black. We love to apply black to the top and brown to the bottom, so our eyes don't look too harsh." -- Adrienne

COVERGIRL Full Lash Bloom Mascara By LashBlast, $7.99, available at COVERGIRL.

2016-08-18-1471544652-4151155-image11.jpg

Eyeliner
"We love a gel liner! The look is so classic. We have this eyeliner in almost every shade and have fun with it. We love expressing our fun, redhead personalities! If you're a redhead without green or blue eyes, use Emerald Seductive or Downtown Blue to line the top lid of the eye." -- Adrienne

Lancôme Liner Design Long Wear Calligraphy Gel EyeLiner in Emerald Seductive, $25, available at Lancôme.

2016-08-18-1471544701-2705737-image12.jpg

Blush
"For some reason, society has told redheads not to wear blush. Don't listen! The trick is to find the right shade for you. MAC has a great redhead-friendly shade called Gingerly. We think MAC must have chosen the name for a reason. The color has hints of pink, but its base color is almost the shade of a bronzer. It's gorgeous with fair skin and any shade of red hair." -- Adrienne

MAC Powder Blush in Gingerly, $22, available at MAC.

Do You Need To Exfoliate Your Armpits?

$

2016-08-18-1471544839-6435551-image13.jpg
Photographed by Brayden Olsen.

In the hierarchy of skin-care priorities, tending to our armpits falls pretty low. Of course, if you asked us, we'd say that we like our underarms to be free of sweat, smell, bumps, and maybe stubble (if you choose to remove hair there), but then we'd have to admit that we don't spend very much energy on getting them there. Instead, we rough them up with razors, swipe a bit of deodorant or anti-perspirant across them, and will them to cooperate whenever we're hot, active, or stressed.

The problem with that plan? It turns out our underarms are a lot more delicate (read: needy) than we've been led to believe. So, if you want to get rid of pesky bumps, discoloration, and odor, you're going to have to give them a little more of the same TLC you bestow upon your face.

Before we get into that, though, a brief lesson on the anatomy of an armpit: As dermatologist Jessica Weiser, MD, of New York Dermatology Group, explains, the surface of the underarm has two kinds of sweat glands: eccrine and apocrine. Eccrine glands are the ones you have all over your body that regulate your temperature. They produce clear, odor-free sweat when you're doing things like walking down the street on a hot summer day, or doing circuits at Barry's Bootcamp. Apocrine glands, on the other hand, are only found in areas with a lot of hair growth. They secrete fluid when the body is under emotional or psychological stress, and that fluid gets broken down by your skin's bacteria to create what Dr. Weiser refers to as "an unpleasant odor," and what the rest of us call BO.

But that's not all. The hair follicles in the underarm can also get clogged with dead skin cells or residue from your deodorant. The most annoying part? Simply shaving the delicate area on the regular is enough to throw your armpits out of wack. Shaving is, yes, exfoliation -- but it's a very aggressive form of it, and it makes it easier for dirt, bacteria, and irritants, like alcohol-based deodorants, to build up in the follicles. Not only that, it leads to ingrowns, which darken the area over time. And while there are plenty of creams that promise to lighten your underarms, Dr. Weiser says they often don't actually get to the root of the issue.

The good news, according to Dr. Weiser, is that a healthy armpit will look and smell pretty good -- and you only have to add a few simple steps to your routine to get it there. It's important to remember, says Dr. Weiser, that "above all, underarms should be treated gently, as the skin in that area is very sensitive and easily irritated."

You don't have to actually give them a facial (phew, because holding our arms above our heads while a mud mask dries isn't exactly our idea of a good time), but she does suggest using a soft washcloth or a gentle scrub to lightly exfoliate in the shower two to three times per week. Most of us can get away with using a body scrub or a bit of plain sugar, but if your skin is especially sensitive, use your facial exfoliator. "For more severe congestion, try a glycolic- or lactic-acid cleanser to help chemically break down dead skin cells," Dr. Weiser advises.

In her professional opinion, if you choose to remove hair, laser is your best bet to avoid irritation and discoloration, but she recognizes that it can be expensive and impossible for some skin types. "If you are going to shave, do it in the shower with warm water and a shaving gel or cream to soften the hair," she says. "Change your razor blade every five shaves for best results, and keep your razor dry in-between uses to prevent bacterial and fungal growth on the blades. And don't forget to shave in the direction of hair growth!"

Ideally, you should shave at night to allow your skin to heal and take a break from gels and creams, says Dr. Weiser. Then, consider the deodorant or anti-perspirant you've been using. If you suffer from uneven skin tone and dark patches, some brands, like Dove, make formulations designed to help soothe irritation and prevent future discoloration.

However, it's often alcohol, the primary ingredient in many traditional deodorants, that causes irritation in the first place, so Dr. Weiser suggests trying a natural crystal or mineral deodorant instead. Another option: an activated-charcoal deodorant, like the one from Kaia Naturals, which can help to absorb sweat, bacteria, and pollutants from the skin's surface. Note that these products haven't been studied enough to show consistent efficacy, but they're worth considering if you want to make the switch from traditional aluminum-based anti-perspirants.

The most important thing you can do to maintain the health of your armpits is also the most important thing you can do for your face (aside from wearing sunscreen): Wash them every single day. You wouldn't leave makeup, dirt, and grime on your face at the end of the day and expect it to remain clear and breakout-free, now would you?

Hair removal, pricey facials, wigs, and sandbagging: It's no secret that Hollywood actresses put a lot of effort into looking effortless on the red carpet. But it makes us feel like we're on a slightly more even playing field when we think about the fact that David Beckham, Kit Harington, Michael B. Jordan, and Justin Bieber don't wake up with glowing complexions and perfect hair every morning, either. There's always someone behind the curtain pulling the strings.

Yep, the guys have pros on hand to smooth their cowlicks, brush their brows, and mattify their complexions before they step out on the red carpet or in front of the camera (hell, even John Mayer has a multi-step skin-care routine nowadays). They're called groomers -- and we're putting the spotlight on them.

Ahead, L.A.'s most in-demand primping pros for the dudes are spilling their secrets and sharing their tried-and-true products. So call your dad, ping your brother, and text your friends. Let's hear it for the boys.

The Expert: Carola Gonzalez
The Clients: Michael B. Jordan, Elijah Wood, George Clooney, and more

For oily, thin, or limp hair...

"This product really does wonders," Gonzalez tells us. "It's amazing for when you want to add volume at the roots or get rid of oil. For lift, grab a little, rub between your hands, and massage into the scalp with fingertips. Or, to remove excess oil on hair, lightly go over just the areas that get greasy...using your fingers, a little product at a time." [Ed. note: Use on dry hair.]

R+Co Badlands Dry Shampoo Paste, $28, available at Barneys New York.

2016-08-18-1471545297-8173669-image9.png

For a natural-looking hold on all hair types...

"This product is super-easy to work into the hair," Gonzalez says. "It has a strong hold, but the texture is soft, making it great for styling, shaping, or adding texture to dry hair."

Magic Move Hard Paste, $18, available at Diamond Beauty.

2016-08-18-1471545356-2505489-image10.png

For a coiffed, dressed-up look...

"This cream is great to use on damp hair," Gonzalez says. "It gives medium hold, it's not sticky, and hair looks naturally styled. Rub a bit through the roots and lengths of hair, then sculpt hair by blowdrying with a brush or just using your hands."

Oribe Sculpting Cream, $35, available at Oribe.

2016-08-18-1471545389-8148381-image11.png

For unruly brows...

To keep brows looking naturally groomed, Gonzalez swears by Make Up For Ever's clear formula.

Make Up For Ever Clear Eyebrow Gel, $19, available at Make Up For Ever.

2016-08-18-1471545456-1162603-image12.png

For dry or chapped lips...

Not all balms are created equal: "Jack Black Intense Therapy Lip Balm is a matte lip balm that hydrates chapped, dry lips well," says Gonzalez.

Jack Black Intense Therapy Lip Balm, $7.50, available at Sephora.

2016-08-18-1471545559-7964322-image13.png

For troubleshooting...

Hangovers, sleepless nights, and common colds don't stand a chance against Gonzalez's tried-and-true regimen for waking up a client's complexion: "I refresh his face with Sisley's Botanical Floral Spray Mist for immediate hydration, then I apply Kiehl's Eye De-Puffer under the eye area," she says. "Then, to moisturize the skin, I use Kiehl's Ultra Facial Cream if client doesn't have oily skin. If he does, then I use Murad's Oil Control Mattifier and mist again with Sisley's spray."

Sisley Botanical Floral Spray Mist, $100, available at Nordstrom; Kiehl's Facial Fuel Eye De-Puffer, $20, available at Kiehl's; Kiehl's Ultra Facial Cream, $47.50, available at Kiehl's; Murad Oil Control Mattifier, $39.50, available at Sephora.

2016-08-18-1471545602-8369496-image14.png

For grease-free SPF...

Sun damage doesn't discriminate, so Gonzalez relies on this formula for her guys for two reasons: It isn't greasy and it's totally sheer. "It does not leave any white residue on skin," she says.

Elta MD UV Daily SPF Facial Sunscreen, $26.50, available at DermStore.

The Expert: Ashley Streicher
The Clients: John Krasinski, Michael Fassbender, Andy Samberg, and more

For a cool, lived-in hair look...

"I love using Hanz de Fuko products for men's hair," Streicher says. "All of the products they offer can be mixed to get the perfect look -- without creating flakes or causing the product to ball up. My all-time favorite is Quicksand. It's a super-matte paste that styles almost like a salt spray, so it gives your hair a dry texture, but also holds."

Hanz de Fuko Quicksand, $19, available at Hanz de Fuko.

2016-08-18-1471545718-9778143-image16.png

For healthy-looking skin...

"I just discovered the Shiseido men's line, and I love the Hydro Master Gel as a moisturizer," Streicher tells us. "It absorbs very quickly, but leaves men's freshly shaven faces plump and moisturized without being oily. Then, I love using the Laura Mercier Secret Finish Mattifying Gel on my guys that get shiny -- it looks very natural."

Shiseido Men Hydro Master Gel, $32, available at Shiseido; Laura Mercier Secret Finish Mattifying Gel, $28, available at Nordstrom.

2016-08-18-1471545839-4716028-image17.png

For facial hair...

"I love Tom Ford's beard oil," Streicher says, noting that she even got her boyfriend hooked on it. "It's important for men to moisturize the beard. The hair can be very wiry and coarse, so this step is important -- and this one smells divine. It makes you much more kissable."

Tom Ford Beauty Oud Wood Conditioning Beard Oil, $50, available at Mr Porter.

Last Tuesday, when Gabby Douglas sailed over the uneven bars during another gold medal haul for the U.S. -- the Final Five won first place in the team gymnastics competition -- I thought: What an amazing athlete. But also: What lipstick is she wearing?

I'm not the only one wondering. The ganache-and-burgundy hue Douglas wore drove beauty aficionados into a frenzy, as evidenced by a Twitter search of "Gabby Douglas lip color." There's no word yet on the exact hue that Douglas was wearing, but until she breaks her silence, here are some dupes to tide you over.

Dad Takes Epic Photos Of Son To Foster His Sense Of Adventure

Ohio photographer Aaron Sheldon has always enjoyed documenting everyday life with his 4-year-old son Harrison. For his latest father-son project, Sheldon added a fun fantasy element.

“Small Steps Are Giant Leaps” is a series of photos of Harrison dressed as an astronaut in ordinary situations in order to illustrate the sense of wonder kids feel as real life explorers discovering everyday adventures.

Sheldon told The Huffington Post he first got the idea for the project while riding the bus with Harrison through downtown Columbus.

“What was a normal, everyday event to me had him completely transfixed,” he said. “Seeing that look of amazement on his face at something so commonplace really struck me. I realized that my son is an explorer, and the world I take for granted, to him, is an amazing place filled with new sights and experiences.”

Sheldon wanted to figure out a way to document his son’s exploration of the world. He later that same week when Harrison went to the doctor’s office with an ear infection.

“Unlike most 3-year-olds, my son loves the doctor’s office ― every part that is, except for the exam table,” the dad explained. “My son had two fears: hand dryers and exam tables, and I was continually trying to find ways to help him face and overcome those two fears.”

As they waited for the doctor, Sheldon asked Harrison to sit on the exam table, and the little boy unsurprisingly said no. The dad then asked his son what sorts of people he thought were brave enough to sit on an exam table. After listing the usual cast of characters traditionally associated with bravery, like firefighters, Harrison had another idea.

“He said ‘What about astronauts, Dad. Are they brave enough?’” Sheldon recalled. “I said ‘Sure they are. After all, they sit on top of rockets and get blasted into space and, before they do that, they have to go to the doctor’s office A LOT!’”

Together, they pretended that Harrison was an astronaut, which helped him face his fears that day. When the exam was over, Sheldon told his son that he was proud of him for being so brave. “He then said to me ‘Next time I get sick, I can wear my astronaut helmet here and you can take a picture of me, right dad?’” the photographer recalled.

That’s when Sheldon’s vision for “Small Steps Are Giant Leaps” fully formed.

Initially the project consisted of the photographer and his son going to local stores, restaurants, libraries and other similar locations. Sheldon would snap a couple of photos of Harrison wearing an astronaut suit, and they’d carry on with their days. As the project progressed, they did some slightly longer photo shoots at exciting locations like the Capitol Building, NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center and Kennedy Space Center.

When Harrison’s mom isn’t working, she likes to join the duo and help her son get suited up, adjust his helmet and provide Pez candy as fuel in between shots.

For Sheldon, the message behind the project is simple. “’Small Steps Are Giant Leaps’ is about reminding parents that everywhere you go, there is a new and exciting world just waiting to be explored,” he told HuffPost. “Our job as parents is to help our children as they explore and make discoveries.”

“I hope that our project will help be a reminder to busy parents to take a moment and help their little explorer make a new discovery or explore a little bit more of their world every single day,” he added.

The dad hopes to turn “Small Steps Are Giant Leaps” into a children’s book. He is currently seeking out publishers and also launched a Kickstarter campaign to help raise funds. Sheldon hopes to parlay the project into an opportunity to promote science education in central Ohio as well.

As for Harrison the little astronaut, Sheldon said he loves the photos.

“Anytime I’m sitting at my laptop he’ll climb onto my lap and ask to look at our astronaut pictures,” he said. “When we started getting feedback from other parents after we launched our Kickstarter, I shared that with him too so that he knew the impact that he and I were having on other people.”

“Right now he is very excited without we are putting the book together, and he is helping me select which of the images will be going into it,” he added.

Photographic Evidence Proves Bill Clinton Was Such A Dad During His Presidency

Bill Clinton definitely dressed the part of “dad” during his presidency ― he dressed in ultimate ‘90s dad style, wearing short jogging shorts and puffy pleated khakis.

On the occasion of Clinton’s 70th birthday on August 19, we highlight his best dad moments in fashion ― from his “building a house with Al Gore” look to the “working on a farm with Hillary photo-op” outfit.

He might get another turn in the White House, this time as First Grandpa to Chelsea’s Aidan and Charlotte (two kids with “Sex And The City” names, oddly enough).

Happy birthday, Bill.

These Are The Best Men's Products That Women Can (And Should) Use

$

Because the world is unfair, women’s grooming and beautifying products are usually more expensive than men’s.

It needs to stop. Marketing is a lie and we’re not buying into it any longer.

In light of it being National Men’s Grooming Day on August 19, we’ve rounded up some of our favorite men’s products that us ladies can use, too.

1. Wanderer Calming Body Cleanser with Amber and Lavender ($9.50)

This stuff smells like a garden in the most pleasant, understated way. It’s not too flowery and the scent isn’t overpowering. It also lathers really well, making it perfect to use for shaving your legs.

2. Anthony Exfoliating + Cleansing Bar ($17)

No bar of soap should cost this much, but this one is decently sized and legitimately a joy to use. The scent is minimal and the two-in-one aspect of it totally sped up our shower time.

3. Calvin Klein CK One Summer ($54)

In today, Ck One Summer #fragrances #fragranceporn #ckonesummer2016 #ckonesummer #ckone #calvinklein #edt #newfragrance

This is like a beach party in a spray. There’s a definite muskiness to it and it lasts for hours so you don’t need a lot to go a long way. The lime mojito and cedarwood notes make it a really sexy scent.

4. Gillette Fusion Proglide Men’s Razor ($10)

Thick-haired ladies, celebrate this glorious razor! These babies don’t shred your legs like other women’s razors can and they do a great job at getting all the hair.

 5. Jack Black Intense Therapy Lip Balm SPF 25 ($7.50)

#JBspotted with the Strawberry Man himself (of #Wimbledon acclaim). Keep on keepin' on @chrisfavabean #getjackblack #lipbalm

This balm is ultra moisturizing with a non-greasy, smooth texture. The minty scent leaves your lips a bit tingly and also does double duty as a breath refresher.

6. Clinique Oil Control Mattifying Moisturizer ($26)

If you have large pores and/or oily skin, this is the holy grail. It acts as a dope pore minimizer and pseudo-primer. We put it on pre-makeup application and it gives a flawless finish.

7. Cetaphil Men Daily Face Cloths ($7)

These take off makeup easily and are great to keep in your bag for whenever you need to clean your face on-the-go.

8. Dove Men+Care Antiperspirant Deodorant, Clean Comfort ($4-$5)

#Lifehack

A photo posted by Dove Men+Care (@dovemencare) on

Maybe it’s a placebo effect, but this stuff LASTS. The smell is totally fresh and stays that way all day and night. Even on incredibly hot days when our other deodorants give up, this one keeps it pushin’.

Head on over to the men’s section, ladies. It’s a treasure trove.

Adele Needs Cold Medicine And All Anyone Can Talk About Is Her Makeup-Free Face

Adele shared a heartfelt video on Instagram Wednesday night, informing fans in Phoenix, Arizona that she was forced to cancel her concert due to a serious cold. The singer apologized profusely for her absence, but explained that she had to protect her health and her voice.

And all anyone can focus on is the fact that Adele is makeup-free in the video.

A video posted by @adele on

”Hello, it’s make-up free me: Adele looks almost unrecognisable” reads a headline from the Daily Mail, while Yahoo declares “Adele Is Makeup-Free and Sick but Still Stunning.” People announced “Adele Is Just as Flawless Without a Drop of Makeup on Her Face,” and PureWow invited readers to “Watch Adele Go Makeup-Free in the Sweetest Video.”

We’re big fans of the #nomakeup movement, and this response helps prove we still need it. Adele is suffering from a cold ― of course she’s makeup free. Do you often put on a full face of makeup to lie on the couch, blow through boxes of Kleenex and pop cough drops like candy? Illness is unglamorous, even when it happens to the queen of cat-eye

There’s no denying that Adele is flawless without a stitch of makeup on her face. The singer has gone makeup-free before and looked stunning every single time. But in this video, Adele’s intent is to be real and genuine with her fans. That’s what we really love her for.

Now, can someone please get this woman some DayQuil?

Keira Knightley Gets Refreshingly Real About Losing Her Hair

Keira Knightley is known for her stunning natural beauty on the big screen and the red carpet. But when it comes to her haircare routine, it isn’t always so natural. And for her, there’s zero shame in that game.

“I have dyed my hair virtually every color imaginable for different films. It got so bad that my hair literally began to fall out of my head!” Knightley told InStyle UK in a recent interview. “So for the past five years I’ve used wigs, which is the greatest thing that’s ever happened to my hair.”

We always applaud showing off natural hair, but it’s also refreshing when one of our style role models reveals her true haircare struggles. And wig or not, Knightley’s gorgeous hairstyles over the years prove she certainly knows what she’s doing.

Here’s an assortment of photos from throughout Knightley’s career, both pre-wig and during the wig era. Can you spot if any of these looks are wigs? We sure can’t.

My Journey To Embracing My Curly Dominican Hair

$

A photo posted by SunKissAlba (@sunkissalba) on

My natural hair journey began in 2011, about a year after starting SunKissAlba, my YouTube channel. This is when I noticed the severe change and damage I've caused on my curls after years of mistreating them and not appreciating the beauty they possessed. My hair went from being naturally curly to brittle, dry, and straight strands due to constant heat styling and lack of knowledge on hair products and ingredients. I remember crying in the bathroom the day I noticed my texture wasn't coming back to its original pattern. That was the day I realized how much I actually love my curls. Unfortunately, most of us tend to value only what we once had and lost and usually only change what we suffer from, but I've learned my lesson, and I never looked back.

The process of gaining back my curls was scary, because I didn't have the support of my family and I didn't know where to start -- but I went with logic. I rejected heat styling tools and couldn't stand the thought of having them around, so I put them in the trash, because I decided that step one was to stop doing the very thing that gave me unhealthy, damaged hair. No more heat, no more straightening, no more hair dyes, and no more unnatural ingredients. I stopped using products with artificial ingredients while educating myself on the benefits of organic ones. I became inspired and was sure I wanted to commit to this journey. One of the first brands I found that supported my hair needs was SheaMoisture. I immediately stocked up on several of their products to help nourish and hydrate my dry damaged hair, so that I can feel more comfortable styling it naturally and creating fashionable hairstyles. Today, almost five years later SheaMoisture still remains one of my favorite brands.

A photo posted by SunKissAlba (@sunkissalba) on

I also learned that cutting off the damaged straight pieces is part of this process, and imperative to see growth. Although I had long hair down my mid back, I accepted the fact that having long hair is worthless if it's damaged and dead. I went into my bathroom with scissors and I cut off about four inches of damaged straight pieces of hair and the next day booked an appointment with a curly hair stylist who specializes in the "dry cutting" method. She trimmed more hair off and styled my hair, while also showing me a better way to cleanse and style without using heat. My family did not understand what I'd gain from this, but I didn't expect them to: In my Dominican culture, having straight hair is valued as beautiful, the ideal. It wasn't their priority to have healthy curly hair; their priority was to have sleek straight hair. About six to eight months later, my family began to acknowledge the changes in my hair and shared their respect for my commitment, because I kept my word and never budged into the pressure and words of discouragement. It took me one whole year to fully get rid of all the damage after gradually trimming off the straight pieces left. A year later I was left with shoulder-length healthy curls, bouncy and cooperative without any sign of heat damage.

My family did not understand what I'd gain from this, but I didn't expect them to: In my Dominican culture, having straight hair is valued as beautiful, the ideal.

Today my family loves my natural curls and they often advise others to do the same with their damaged hair. My own hair journey has led them to change their views and their definition of beauty. My YouTube viewers have also witnessed my changes and progress, through the hundreds of hair videos I've published on my channel as I experienced how to recover my hair. Seeing me gain healthy curls and wear my natural curls with confidence has made them feel that they can do it, too. I'm so blessed to have such a diverse audience from all parts of the world who can come together on my channel, share stories and inspire one another through accepting their own curls with love. I didn't know what I'd gain from this when I started, but I can proudly say I gained more than I ever dreamed of. I'm so much more confident and have learned to embrace my natural self!

I'm so blessed to have such a diverse audience from all parts of the world who can come together on my channel.

This journey is not just about hair. It's about finding comfort in who you are and celebrating that in everything you do. I'm proud to say that beauty truly does come from within and same way we should care about the ingredients in our hair, we should care about the ingredients we consume from the inside out.

Gemstones and the Design World: An Interview with Zicana

Zicana owner and founder Frank Marasco knows gemstones. Ask him about their porousness, heat sensitivity, or place of origin and he'll tell you that and so much more. His knowledge always transcends the scope of the question. His passion is evident and enjoyable. And there is nothing we love more at St. Charles than working with people who are passionate about their craft. I sat down with Frank to discuss the various applications of semi-precious stones in design and their influence on his newer endeavors.

Framed and underlit Tiger Eye and Blue Tiger Eye slabs grace the walls of the Zicana showroom in Westbury, NY.

Lindsey Katalan: Tell me a little bit about Zicana.

Frank Marasco: Zicana designs, and is a leading artisan of, fine crafted made-to-measure gemstone surfaces and original signature pieces. Inspired by the organic beauty of natural elements, the label offers a series of collections consisting of jewelry, home décor and accessories. Zicana was derived from an epiphany I had while running the family's custom stone boutique. I came to explore gemstones and in 2011 had several revelations about using these exclusive jewels in new mediums and applications. It was from these concepts that the brand emerged.

The St. Charles of New York showroom's famous "Man Cave" features a dazzling Blue Tiger Eye bar.

LK: Your collection of gemstone surfaces are extraordinary. I have personally seen them used in kitchens and wet bars. Have you had designers work them into other rooms? If so, where and how?

FM: Since its inception, Zicana has been commissioned by interior designers, companies and private individuals alike. We work on several types of projects all the time. We actually have one happening now that is probably our largest yet; a restaurant in Massapequa, Long Island that will boast a spectacular grand bar comprised of our gray agate stone, sculpted and finished in a very unique fashion.

2016-08-09-1470702869-5652011-PowderRoom.jpg

LK: What is your most popular stone right now? Where, in your opinion, do you anticipate the trends will be going in the future?

FM: Because of the current trend in the world of design, our most popular materials are white and gray. I see the trend staying here for a while, due to their neutrality when applied to kitchen and bathroom applications. I believe that once more colorful materials are discovered, they will be used and appreciated as home accents in an area where clients are willing to be more daring.

LK: I hear that you are going to be delving into lighting. Can you tell me a little bit about this particular project?

FM: We have been working on a small lighting collection that involves incorporating the gems with different kinds of mediums. I hope that using exotic stones for lighting will showcase some of the possibilities and things you can actually do with this particular product and just how special it is.

Olivia Palermo Shows Absolutely No Fear In A Super Sheer Top (NSFW)

Let’s face it: It’s August, and it’s hot.

When it’s this hot, we must sacrifice a few things in order to keep cool. Some people stay home and forego a social life in pursuit of air conditioning.

Others, like Olivia Palermo, simply take the town in more ... airy clothing.

Palermo wore a bold, mock neck, completely see-through blouse with ruffled sleeves while out in Brooklyn on Wednesday.

Paired with suspender pants and Jimmy Choo flats, the bold top is part of her Chelsea28 clothing collection, and Palermo rocks it with serious confidence.

While we wouldn’t exactly call a mock neck top hot-weather friendly, we’d at least go so far as to say this look gives even Kendall Jenner a run for her nipple-positive money.

Model, “America’s Got Talent” judge and avid yodeler Heidi Klum is back at it again with the topless pics.

The 43-year-old posted a few snaps of her tropical vacation on Instagram this week, giving us a peek at what blue water and good genetics look like. Klum attempted to divert our attention away from her topless pics by instructing us to look, instead, at her jewelry.

“Love my new ❤️ necklace,” Klum wrote in the caption for an underwater photo, in which she wears only a long gold chain with a pendant and striped bikini bottoms. Never mind that the water makes her look somewhat like that child from “The Ring” who haunted your dreams.
