From designers to musicians, supermodels to Hollywood's hottest stars, GLAM4GOOD asks the world's most influential pop culture icons to share their thoughts on the true meaning of beauty and style.

GLAM4GOOD loves Rita Ora for her sick fashion sense, cool tunes and social media genius. Ora has exploded onto the scene to become one of the world's hottest "It Girls." She sings, models and acts in a big, bold beautiful way and tells GLAM4GOOD she wants to inspire people everywhere to be courageous in everything they do.

Ora is a fashion risk taker and is quickly becoming a style icon. GLAM4GOOD asked her how she thinks fashion empowers.

Fashion gives people a sense of identity through expression of clothes and appearance. You can wear things that mean a lot to you, all my jewellery is from my mother or grandmother and gifts. I wear a ring for good luck, for example, when I perform! Fashion gives me the confidence to look and feel great.

We asked Ora to tell us her definition of beauty and what words of wisdom she would give young people everywhere:

"True beauty is knowing who you are and believing in yourself. Happy people know their purpose, have courage to fight for it and strength to keep going."

Check out Rita Ora's official site, and in the album below, find more inspiring quotes from our GLAM4GOOD Pinspiration Series. Solange's Elevator Fight Is Further Proof That We Don't Know Anything About Beyoncé

On Monday, TMZ released the footage that is now surely etched into your memory: a frantic Solange attacking Jay Z, "while a stoic Beyoncé looks on." The Internet has spent the subsequent news cycles analyzing the incident, conjuring Illuminati symbolism and making elevator-related puns. Days after the inquiry began, however, there remain shreds of Rihanna-themed gossip and no real answers. We have to wonder what this would look like on any other set of celebrities; it would likely be written off as a hot mess of a confrontation and relegated to the tabloids. The whole thing is scandalous, sure, but probably the biggest draw of elevator-gate is that it completely shatters our idea of Bey and Jay as this perfect couple and, more important, forces us to wonder what we truly know about our reigning Queen of the Universe. That's why somebody kicking somebody else in an elevator at the Standard Hotel feels so shocking; not that it happened, but that it happened to Beyoncé.

1120mid

The way we talk about Beyoncé consistently verges on idol worship. We say she is “everything,” and in a way that's more telling than the vacuous term ever intends to be. More accurately, Beyoncé can be "anything" that we want her to be. Through the empowering lyrics and execution of her work, we are able to project whatever we need her to symbolize. She can be a beacon of feminism or sex positivity, hard work, success or an aesthetic ideal. What iteration of flawlessness do you need from Queen Bey today? An imaginary best friend? A maternal figure of wisdom? Just read whatever you're looking for into her latest song and / or Instagram upload.

But when we pause from "literally dying" over her every move, what do we really know about Beyoncé? She creates the perception that she’s sharing with us. Beyoncé posts what seem like intimate glances at her life to Tumblr. We see her frolicking with Blue Ivy, rolling around in pajamas or “going make-up free,” but it’s all highly curated. Over the course of her career, she and her husband have built a brand on the basis of untouchable perfectionism. The most stunning example, of course, is the movie “Life Is But A Dream.” Amid singing, dancing and crying, Beyoncé reveals virtually nothing. In the polished, middle-of-the-night confessionals (in which she still has camera-ready hair) we learn of her miscarriage and love for Jay Z, but it’s nothing she hasn’t carefully measured and re-packaged in the most flattering form. Her entire presence, be it through filtered photos or quasi-confessionals, is perhaps the most genius PR operation Hollywood has ever seen.

1120mid1

In a realm where we expect to know everything about celebrities, Beyoncé has managed to sidestep the voyeurism while maintaining our interest. In Internet years, an eon has passed after the Solange attack. Yet, Beyoncé has made no comment or statement beyond uploading a cryptic prayer and some old photos of Solange to Instagram. It’s questionable how much we genuinely know about any celebrity, but the stunning thing about Beyonce is that in most cases, she seems to almost control the rumors before we can think them up. This is a woman who has made us believe we have access to her behind-the-scenes reality, while simultaneously attempting to delete Super Bowl images from the Internet. If only briefly, elevator-gate shatters that guarded image, giving us a grainy, black-and-white glance into everything we don’t see, and forcing us to realize that we basic individuals never knew much of anything in the first place.

Note: HuffPost Entertainment contacted Beyoncé's representatives for comment on the elevator incident and subsequent rumors. They did not respond to our inquiry.

I on Beauty: Chapter 2

$
0
0
Beauty is more than skin deep. It goes right down to the core of who you are. Years ago I would have never thought that goodness and serenity, as well as proper sleep habits and meditation could keep our Post 50 faces aglow.

In the last chapter we talked about outward beauty tips, which are very important to maintain in Living Beautiful Post 50.

In this chapter I would like to share with you some inspirational and rejuvenating beauty treatments I use.

You have heard this many times before: "Get plenty of rest." This is imperative to looking good! It makes a huge difference what time you go to sleep at night. I spoke to my nutritionist, Sherry Belcher; who maintains that it is not always easy to retire before midnight, but it is healthier. Here is why and this is what she had to offer us about sleep:

Our bodies have a relationship with the rhythm of nature, a circadian rhythm. Our internal clock responds to sunlight and darkness. When light enters our eyes it stimulates the brain to make certain hormones and to wake us up. Conversely, when it gets dark, the body sends signals to make the hormone melatonin, which happens a couple of hours after sunset, which helps to make us sleepy. Sleep goes through deep and superficial cycles at night and according to some research the majority of our deepest sleep cycles (where the body does its repair, rebooting and general housekeeping) takes place early in the night between 10 P.M. to 1P.M. Melatonin, which is believed to stimulate the repair process in our bodies, peaks around midnight.

After 2 A.M. the sleep cycles are not as deep as the body prepares to release cortisol to wake us in the morning. If our eyes are exposed to light at night then we do not release the melatonin we need to make us drowsy. We also can miss the window of the melatonin peak but can get a second wind after 10 P.M. The quality of sleep that happens after midnight does not seem to be as restorative to the body.

2014-05-15-Bed_Shot_2.jpg

Aside from proper rest, I also meditate everyday. The method I practice is Shambhala. It is the Shambhala view that every human being has a fundamental nature of goodness, warmth and intelligence. The Shambhala path helps us break through the ancient crust of ego and awaken to the joy of fully living in this world. Awakening and opening, we discover the world to be naturally sacred-pure and full of beauty. By following this practice I believe that we can reclaim our natural beauty and birthright of wisdom and compassion. In this method, you keep your eyes open and affix them to a spot and follow your breath. The practice is to help you clear your mind and become calm. When I ask women if they meditate, and they reply with a yes, I ask them to explain to me exactly how they practice. They immediately say "Yes, I sit there and think about all sorts of things: dinner, children, my husband, work etc." While meditating the only one thing you should be concentrating on is your breath and letting go of everything else. When you practice proper meditation you will begin to experience a difference in your life. Start with five minutes a day, as most people cannot sit still and empty their mind for more than five minutes! In time you will be able to sit longer. For optimum results, work up to 30 minutes per day.

Of course, there are variations of meditation, most of which range along a continuum of some combination of concentration and open awareness techniques. Defining and understanding the type of meditation being practiced represents some of the most important and challenging factors in the field of scientific meditation research. The difficulty of creating clear and consistent definitions of meditative practices is evidenced by the discrepancies found in many academic descriptions of meditation.

2014-05-15-irene4_4.jpeg

The practice of Shambhala meditating is to sit upright in a quiet room or serene atmosphere, place your hands on your folded legs and if you can't fold your legs then you can sit on a chair. Your eyes are open for this practice, focus them on a spot in the room. Sit quietly and when a thought comes to your mind, label it as a "thought" and let it go. In ten seconds another thought will enter your mind and release it also. Keep doing this with all the thoughts that come into your mind, and before too long you will have trained your mind to be in the moment, hear what people are actually saying and have a richer life. It's not hard to do with a little practice. You wonder how an actor performs a one-man show for three hours on Broadway, he has what is called muscle memory. Your brain acts like a muscle, train it, and it will perform.

One of my favorite beauty icons is Audrey Hepburn who was always beautiful through out every decade. Even Post 50. She had a distinctive style and an abundance of grace and elegance. Audrey also practiced meditation as a method of achieving inner beauty.

2014-05-15-Audrey_Hepburn_1B.jpg

We all know Audrey for her roles in Funny Face (1957), War and Peace with her husband, Mel Ferrer, and Henry Fonda (1956), The Nun's Story (1959), The Unforgiven (1960), Breakfast at Tiffany's (1961), and of course my favorite My Fair Lady, and the Broadway production Gigi. In later years she became a goodwill ambassador for UNICEF. Audrey has always tried to raise awareness about children in need. It stems from her early years when she and her family went hungry during WW II. Audrey Hepburn was a true humanitarian and has left her mark on the world forever.

One of her wonderful quotes that defines beauty:

"The beauty of a woman is seen in her eyes, because that is the doorway to her heart, the place where love resides."

With so many pressures and stress factors in today's world, I credit my peacefulness to practicing sitting meditation. We as beautiful women need our beauty rest, our mindfulness and a healthy attitude.

Ex-'Scandal' Star Columbus Short Pleads Not Guilty To Battery

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Former "Scandal" star Columbus Short has pleaded not guilty to felony battery for a fight that seriously injured a man at a West Hollywood restaurant earlier this year.

Short appeared in court for a brief arraignment hearing on the case filed after he was accused of punching a man at the restaurant in March. The actor's attorney Jeff Jacquet had sought to fast track the case, but Deputy District Attorney David Schorr said the injuries involved were too serious to qualify. He said Short is accused of cold-cocking a man, knocking him unconscious and fracturing his left eye socket.

Superior Court Judge Keith L. Schwartz said based on the injuries the case wasn't eligible for the so-called early disposition program, which could have settled the case before a preliminary hearing in which more details about the altercation would be disclosed.

Short was ordered to return to court on June 5 to set a date for the preliminary hearing.

The case is one of several involving Short and allegations of violence. He faces a misdemeanor spousal battery case and his estranged wife has a temporary restraining order against him. Tanee Short claims her husband threatened her with a knife during a fight in April.

She filed for divorce after the incident, and a hearing on the restraining order is scheduled for May 21.

Jacquet has said Short will contest the restraining order and it will require a lengthy evidentiary hearing.

Short announced last month that he wasn't returning to the hit series "Scandal" for its fourth season.

FDA Warns Against Temporary Tattoos

By: By Stephanie Pappas, Senior Writer
Published: 05/15/2014 02:55 PM EDT on LiveScience

A press-on butterfly tattoo may seem like an easy alternative to the pain and permanency of real ink, but the Food and Drug Administration is warning consumers that temporary tattoos aren't risk free.

FDA officials cautioned that temporary tattoos can cause allergic reactions, in a May 13 seminar on the agency's website.

The FDA would like temporary tattoo users to report reactions to the government, said Katherine Hollinger, an epidemiologist with the FDA Office of Cosmetics and Colors. The agency cannot currently provide any information on the number of adverse reactions reported each year.

"If you had a reaction to a temporary tattoo or any cosmetic product, the FDA wants to know," she said. [8 Weird Signs of an Allergic Reaction]

FDA authority

Cosmetics (including temporary tattoos) do not have to receive FDA approval before they go on the market, while medicines do. However, the color additives in cosmetics do have to go through FDA approval.

There is no data on the number of people who use temporary tattoos each year, said Hollinger. The agency does receive voluntary reports of problems, Hollinger said in response to a question from Live Science, but would release those numbers only through a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request.

The FDA can take action against harmful products, but in the case of temporary tattoos, can only determine the existence of a problem if consumers provide voluntary reports of harm.

Types of tattoos

There are a number of temporary tattoos on the market, said Bhakti Petigara Harp, a chemist in the FDA's Office of Cosmetics and Colors. Beyond the wet-and-press tattoos found in bubble gum machines, there are several types of temporary tattoos that use plant-based and synthetic dyes.

One type uses henna, a paste made from the dried leaves of the lawsonia plant, which is frequently used to paint intricate designs on the hands and feet of Indian and Pakistani brides. Some henna products are mixed with a hair-dye ingredient, p-phenylenediamine (PPD), which gives the remaining designs a black or blue-black color. Although they are frequently used for skin designs, neither henna nor PPD are approved by the FDA for use on the skin.

Another dye, jagua, derives from the unripened fruit of the Genipa americana, a South American tree. Indigenous people in the Amazon have long used jagua for body decorations, but the dye is newer to the United States.

Allergic reactions to these dyes can involve rashes and blisters. Long-term effects might include scarring, skin changes and increased sensitivity to sun, Hollinger said.

Of course, real tattoos come with their own set of risks, including contaminated ink that has caused infection outbreaks.

Some people also have allergies to tattoo ink, particularly if it's red. In February, doctors reported the case of a man who developed an allergic reaction to his tattoo 20 years after getting inked, as a side effect of a bone marrow transplant.

Irina Shayk Slammed For Posing Topless For #BringBackOurGirls Campaign

Plenty of celebrities have already contributed to an online campaign and shared photos of themselves holding "#BringBackOurGirls" signs, in support of the safe return of the 276 Nigerian schoolgirls kidnapped by a group of Islamist militants called Boko Haram.

Irina Shayk, best known for appearing in the Sports Illustrated annual swimsuit issue, took a slightly different approach to the campaign, and her efforts haven't been as appreciated as she perhaps anticipated, reports Gossip Cop. On May 11, the 28-year-old Russian model posted a topless photo of herself to Instagram with only the sign reading, "#BringBackOurGirls" covering her chest.

Rather than commending Shayk for joining a worthy cause, the photo was met with a number of harsh comments from others in the Instagram community, who slammed her decision to pose nude as "tasteless" and "ignorant" given the subject matter of the campaign.

"Pretty, but the toplessness is distracting from the cause. It's not about you," one commenter wrote, while another chimed in, "Callous, self-centred [sic] and of very poor taste."

Two days after posting the photo, Shayk appeared to have brushed off the negative comments and posted a message seemingly aimed at her critics:

Meet The 4-Year-Old Whose Swag Rivals Ryan Gosling's

What's cuter than Ryan Gosling trekking through an urban wonderland? A 4-year-old who is all dressed up to look like Ryan Gosling.

Enter Ryker Wixom, a 4-year-old who mimics grown mens' looks and is becoming a bit of an Instagram celebrity by doing so. Of course, Ryker has no idea that more than 50,000 people are following him. "He does know that I am annoying and take pictures of him and his brother about once a day... like most parents," mom, Collette, told HuffPost in an email.

"Hey, Girl."

Collette started Mini Style Hacker about three months ago after seeing other well-dressed kids on the Internet. She thought Ryker was just as stylish as his pint-sized trendy peers, and wanted to show other parents how to dress their kids like dapper dudes -- without spending too much money.

She says she looks to celebrities and models for inspiration, then shops for similar looks at places like Zara, H&M, Gap, and Old Navy, and then poses Ryker like the original photo.

Collette offers great tips to other parents who might want to hack Ryker's style. "Knowing how to style a look is sometimes just as important as the pieces. For example, cuffing a kid's pant leg can turn an outfit from ordinary to fashionable," she says. Also, "Layer! Layering is great for kids. 1. It looks cool. 2. If they spill on a layer, take it off... boom new shirt. 3. You can keep them at a comfortable temperature in any weather."

Living Together: Good for Some, Not So Much for Others

$
0
0
Headlines trumpeted the news: "Co-habitation doesn't cause divorce!" (Live Science) "Best predictor of divorce? Age when couples cohabit" (Christian Science Monitor) "Call your dad: Living Together Before Marriage Does Not Lead to Divorce" (Slate).

All three statements are true for the one-third of younger Americans who have a bachelor's degree from college. And for the other two-thirds? The consequences of living together are more complicated, at best.

What captured media attention were several articles released by the Council on Contemporary Families, a nonpartisan organization of family researchers. One of those researchers was Arielle Kuperberg, assistant professor of sociology at the University of North Carolina-Greensboro. In the April issue of Journal of Marriage and Family, Kuperberg concluded that live-in relationships stand a good chance of lasting if the young people are at least 23 when they move in together. By that age, she writes, they should be able to identify compatibility and conduct themselves appropriately.

"The biggest predictor of divorce is the age at which a couple starts living together, not whether they are married of whether they live together," she says.

Brad Wilcox, a sociologist at the University of Virginia, says age and compatibility alone are not enough. Another factor, he says, is whether the partners have jobs that provide adequate financial support. Still another -- and perhaps the most important -- is whether both partners are 4-year college graduates.

"Most college kids will co-habit, get married and not get divorced," says Wilcox, director of the National Marriage Project, a research organization based at the University of Virginia. But, he notes, about two out of three younger Americans do not have degrees at the bachelor's level or higher.

Why would lesser-educated couples have a harder time making their relationships last? Sharon Sassler, a professor of policy analysis at Cornell University, sheds some light on this in a forthcoming book on cohabitation. Young adults tend to move in together within six months of starting their relationships -- more quickly than college graduates. Many do this in part because it's cheaper to support one household rather than two. And indeed, saving on rent may make a positive difference in a relationship.

However, if personal characteristics such as honesty and trust -- arguably as important to relationships as income -- aren't already well established, these couples have less chance of surviving the inevitable rocky times, says Wilcox. They are more likely to split up before getting married, and if they marry, more likely to divorce. That's especially true if they have children they weren't planning for, which many do.

Completing a bachelor's degree in college makes a big difference in the timing of having children. In 2010, 12 percent of unmarried women in their 20's who had graduated from college gave birth to their first child, according to U.S. Census data. In that same year, the proportion was a staggering 52 percent for unmarried, 20-something women with only a high school diploma or some college.

College-educated women are more successful at postponing childbirth for several reasons. The most important, perhaps, is that having a B.A. or B.S encourages and enables them to seek decent-paying employment first. Also, they are more likely to know about, and be able to pay for, the relatively new, vastly improved methods of long-acting, reversible contraception.

(Note to Hobby Lobby and other employers fighting in court to deny insurance coverage of several methods of contraception covered by Obamacare: This is a strong argument for making all contraception affordable and easily available to your employees, unmarried as well as married. Not to do so, when your policies cover highly effective remedies for other medical conditions, is not only unfair to female employees but short-sighted in terms of morale, quality of employee hires, longevity and productivity.)

Research by Evelyn Lehrer, economics professor at the University of Illinois-Chicago, came to a conclusion similar to Kuperburg's regarding relationships and age. Every year a woman delays marriage and completes additional years of education, right up until her early 30s, decreases her chance of divorce, she found.

Delaying marriage allows couples to discuss issues which, though common to some couples in previous generations, are more frequent today and call for a couple to take their time before getting married. How will partners share their paychecks? Divide household chores? Do they want children? If they do, when should they have kids and who will take care of them? How will they keep their independence as individuals?

It takes time to negotiate all that successfully, says Jennifer Drake Fantroy. Fantroy and her husband, Justin Fantroy, recently moved from the Washington, D.C. area to St. Louis. "Justin and I were together for a long time, even before we officially moved in together," says Jennifer Fantroy, now the assistant director for the Sue Shear Institute for Women in Public Life. "Before we made it to the 'my toothbrush is here but this is not my address' stage we had a talk about our expectations. I think we were sort of traditional in that sense."

They lived together for four years before getting married two and a half years ago. She was 28, Justin Fantroy, 29. "We never pressured ourselves to get married simply because we had been together for a long time," she says. "While we took cohabiting seriously, we also knew that there was another level of commitment that we both aspired to and hadn't yet reached. For both of us, marriage was an outward signal that this is it."

The idea of having children helped propel them to marry. Not because they felt they should be married to have a child, but because they believed marriage would enable them to provide a more stable, secure family for a child. "We needed health insurance, a clean, safe, place to live, and a job that provided paid leave after I had the baby," she says.

She continues, "We were grateful for our time living together, because it made the transition to marriage a little easier. I can't imagine getting married to someone, and then having to get used to being with them all the time. With Justin, I felt like, I already know that you're going to leave your socks everywhere, and that the cabinet doors will be open every time you leave the kitchen. I can focus on being your next of kin."

Christie's auction house says the Prada dress, featuring a red halter-style top and burgundy skirt, will go under the hammer in London on June 20. Proceeds will go to humanitarian organization Oxfam. The gown is expected to fetch between 3,000 pounds and 5,000 pounds ($5,000 and $8,400).

The actress, who plays Lady Mary in the costume drama, visited a Syrian refugee camp in Jordan last year. She said she hoped the buyer "will get as much pleasure from it as I did when I wore it to the Emmy awards and that we can raise as much money as possible to support the Syrian people."
