The Best Alternatives For Anyone Who Hates Wearing Lipstick

$
0
0
We get it. Wearing lipstick is tricky. True, there are some really excellent lipsticks out there, but there are also plenty with super-drying formulas or ones that bleed all over your face.

Luckily, HuffPost Live makeup artist Kari Bauce is a pro in this department. She shared some knowledge that we believe will sway the minds of lipstick naysayers.

Here are three lipstick alternatives for anyone who hates lipstick, and our top product picks to put these tips to the test.

lip gloss

Lip Gloss

Why: Bauce recommends ones with a hint of color, not an opaque finish. Your lips will stay smooth and shiny thanks to ingredients like vitamin E and shea butter. It also requires little-to-no touch-ups throughout the day.

Try: Jouer Moisturizing Lip Gloss in Blush or Urban Decay Naked Ultra Nourishing Lipgloss in Beso.

Tinted Lip Balm

Why: If you're someone who keeps at least three lip balms in their pocket or bag, know that you can get the same color payoff with the tinted versions as you would with lipsticks. Bauce suggests keeping in mind that these tend to be on the waxier side. "Consider it to be ChapStick with color," she says.

Try: NYX Chunky Dunk Hydrating Lippie in Cherry Smash or Burt's Bees Tinted Lip Balm in Hibiscus.

Sheen Lipstick

Why: Okay, so this is technically lipstick, but it's not like the traditional ones you're likely used to. Sheen lipsticks have a thinner consistency, according to Bauce. "They're a step up from lip gloss if you find it to be too sticky," she adds. For an everyday, barely-there look, try sheen lipsticks that are complementary to your skin tone. Or you can go all out with intense colors that feel weightless and won't fade.

Try: MAC Supreme Sheen Lipstick in Good to Be Bad or Lancome Color Design Sensational Effects Lipcolor in Fearless.

This Is What Happens When Fashion Risks Pay Off

When women are invited to fancy events -- like weddings, galas and dinners -- most choose to wear a dress. And while that's always a safe bet, why not stand out from the crowd in something totally unexpected?

This week, Hollywood threw caution to the wind and showed up on the red carpet in some surprising, albeit successful, looks. Selena Gomez stunned in a sultry suit and Chloe Moretz wowed 'em in shorts -- looks like it's time to try pants.

Check out our best-dressed list below and let us know if you agree with our picks!

Chloe Grace Moretz in Valentino

chloe

Okay, everyone else can go home now. This is yet another home run for the young fashionista. Moretz's decision to wear shorts on the red carpet could have ended badly, but since she is wearing a three-piece matching set and strappy high heels, she looks on point for the Teen Choice Awards.

Selena Gomez in Saint Laurent

selena

There are few things sexier than a woman in menswear. Not only does this sophisticated suit make Gomez look extremely grown-up (we almost forgot she is a former Disney star), but the tailoring is spot-on. This is such a nice departure from the little dresses she has been wearing as of late.

Shay Mitchell in Misha Collection

shay

Though we've seen Mitchell in similar looks before, we're still in awe of this ensemble. Her white lace-bustier and matching skirt is a great way to show off her summer tan, while those metallic accessories and her deep burgundy lip add the perfect finishing touches.

Taylor Swift in Monique Lhuillier

taylor swift

Swift looks like an actress straight out of old Hollywood with her retro waves and tea-length dress. The light pink and red color combination is so elegant and the nipped-in waist really accentuates her figure.

Ali Larter in Christian Siriano

ali

Bright, fun, trendy -- this is the outfit we have been waiting to see Larter wear. The matching skirt and top is ideal for mid-August weather. And we're so happy that the "Legends" star is changing up her look from dark, matronly dresses.

This Is What Happens When Ugly Clothes Wear Good People

It seems like the dog days of summer has brought about the dog days of style.

Celebrities wore unflattering dresses, bizarre prints and busy outfits that landed them on the worst-dressed list.

Check out our the stars who flopped in the wardrobe department and let us know if you agree with our picks.

Hailee Steinfeld

h

Not only is this dress all wrong for the Teen Choice Awards but it doesn't translate off the runway.

Victoria Justice

victoria justice

This entire outfit is problematic. The dress is too busy with the open-back, criss-cross straps and exposed skin. The hair and makeup do not jive with the boho vibe.

Zendaya Coleman

coleman

Though we love animal print and we love thigh-high boots, we have to admit that they're not the best combination to wear on the red carpet. Coleman looks like she is dressing up for Halloween. She should have chosen only one statement-making item, not two.

Rita Ora

rita ora

Well this is a '90s trend we didn't want to come back. Ora looks like a cross between TLC and "I Dream of Jeannie."

Kendall Jenner

kendall

Between the cowl neck and the sheer panels on the pants, this outfit just doesn't work. The model is also far too pretty to be wearing so much makeup.

LA Delivery Service Brings Booze And Underwear At Same Time

The future of delivery services will arrive on Los Angeles doorsteps starting Friday afternoon thanks to a company that is offering to bring alcohol and underwear at the same time.

Saucey, an alcohol delivery service, is partnering with MeUndies, a Los Angeles-based underwear company for a week-long promotion where customers can order booty shorts and boxers along with bourbon and beer.

The alcohol and undies are being sold in special Sleepover Packs that cost between $40 and $100, depending on the number of customers.

Each pack includes a fresh pair of underwear, socks, a T-shirt, sunglasses, a hangover-fighting vitamin and your choice of alcohol and mixers, according to the Los Angeles Times.

Saucey will start delivering the booze-and-briefs packages at noon, but discerning customers may want to target their orders between 4 and 9 p.m.

That's when the company plans to have at least some of the Sleepover Packs delivered by underwear models in nothing but their skivvies, KTLA TV reports.

The 4 Simple Items That'll Change The Way You Do Laundry

$
0
0
So you've been doing laundry for years without ever thinking twice about it. What is there to think about, after all? You've got a hamper. You know to use detergent. You have common sense. But there are a few things your laundry room might be missing that could make this chore way easier -- and help make your clothes last as long as possible. Here's what you should be adding to your shopping list, stat:

Dryer Balls
dryer ball
Dryer balls 2-pack, $4.59, from Target
What they are: Rubber balls with little nubs.
Why you need them: The main selling point of dryer balls is that they reduce drying time (which is debatable). However, the bigger reason to buy a set, is that they keep static at bay. They also help keep comforters and pillows fluffy. And in desperate times, we've also thrown a few in with dry clothes as a lazy alternative to ironing.
How to use them: Toss a couple in the dryer with wet laundry. They'll gently bop around during the cycle, lifting and separating items.

Lingerie Bag
lingerie bag
Lingerie bag, $5, from Bed Bath & Beyond
What it is: A lightweight mesh bag with a zipper.
Why you need it: What goes into a washing cycle as underwear often comes out a tangled mess (especially with thongs). By keeping delicate items in a washable bag, they get nice and clean without intertwining.
How to use it: Throw dainty items into the bag, zip it up, then toss it into the washing machine.

Washing Soda
washing soda
Arm & Hammer Super Washing Soda, $9 for 55 ounces, from Amazon.com
What it is: Also known as sodium carbonate, washing soda is a powdery substance that's often billed as a laundry booster. (It does not contain detergent or soap.)
Why you need it: Washing soda helps your detergent work better by acting as a solvent to remove stains. It also has a temporary softening effect on hard water, which also improves detergent performance.
How to use it: Generally, you'll add a scoopful to the water in your washing machine after adding detergent.

Dye Catchers
color catcher
Shout Color Catcher Dye-Catching In-Wash Cloths, $4.50, from Drugstore.com
What they are: Individual sheets that help "catch" any leaching dye during a wash cycle.
Why you need it: Even if you're not committing the worst laundry sin (mixing red and white items in a load), you might have noticed that, after a few washings, lighter clothes can look a little dingy. A dye catcher can help you avoid such a fate, by absorbing any errant dye before it soaks into other clothing items.
How to use it: Usually, you'll simply toss a sheet in the washing machine after adding detergent, but check the package instructions.

Drop Everything, Misty Copeland Might Be Getting A Movie

It's another good day for Misty Copeland fans. The awe-inspiring ballerina, who most recently wowed us with one truly amazing Under Armour commercial, may be getting her own movie.

Deadline reported Thursday that New Line Cinema is optioning a biopic based off of Copeland's memoir "Life In Motion: An Unlikely Ballerina," which recounts her early struggles as a young dancer living in a welfare motel with her family.

Copeland's story is unique in the prestigious ballet world, where 13-year-olds are considered "late-bloomers." It is certainly not a story of privilege, but rather perseverance. From her humble beginnings taking dance lessons at the Boys and Girls club to her current status as American Ballet Theatre's third African American female soloist, she is living proof that no dream is too big. That alone sounds like pure cinematic gold to us.

Learn more about Misty's story in the clip above, and excuse us as we squeal with excitement.

Jennifer Aniston Speaks Out Against Botox, Reveals An Even Larger Cultural Problem

$

The Internet broke out in celebration this past week over Jennifer Aniston's recent comments about Botox.

"There is also this pressure in Hollywood to be ageless," the actress told makeup artist Bobbi Brown in an interview for Yahoo! Beauty. "I think what I have been witness to, is seeing women trying to stay ageless with what they are doing to themselves. I am grateful to learn from their mistakes, because I am not injecting shit into my face.”

She continued: "I see them and my heart breaks. I think, 'Oh god if you only know how much older you look.' They are trying to stop the clock and all you can see is an insecure person who won’t let themselves just age."

While Aniston’s decision to embrace the natural effects of aging is noteworthy in the greater context of Hollywood, her comments fall in line with a larger cultural problem: Why, when praising celebrities who do not conform to anti-aging norms, must we simultaneously criticize those who do?

The practice of age-defying procedures exists in a culture that idolizes young women. One need only to look to contemporary media to see the evidence: Advertisements and runway shows almost exclusively feature teenaged to 20-something models. The Center For the Study Of Women And Television reported that women over 40 made up just 30 percent of all characters in the top 100 grossing films of 2013. What this first tells us is, on a practical level, female celebrities who don’t keep up youthful appearances will likely be out of a job. But the lack of representation for older women also has important implications on a larger scale.

The types of people we see represented on television, in magazines and on the Internet help to inform the types of people that we as a society come to find valuable in real life. Contemporary media’s narrow representation of only young, thin, normatively attractive females comes to influence actual women’s lives in a very concrete way: The younger and more traditionally attractive one looks, the more social capital she has.

In this environment, placing blame on celebrities (or any women, for that matter) who undergo anti-aging procedures effectively punishes individuals trying their best to hold on to some semblance of power and social worth in a society that systematically oppresses women. Calling out older actresses who get Botox as being “fake-looking” or “insecure” only serves to distract us from focusing our energies on the actual larger, structural misogyny embedded within our culture.

It’s all well and good to appreciate celebrities, like Aniston, who resist the pressure to conform to such stringent standards, but only to the extent that their abstinence calls attention to the greater unjust pressures women face. Staying away from age-defying procedures is not “better,” and is not a requirement -- it is taking an extra, risky step. It is not women's responsibilities to shirk the few tools they have at their disposal to continue to hold power in an unequal climate. Instead of implying that it is, we should expend our energies creating an environment in which women of all ages and appearances are highly valued.

The fact that when celebrities do take measures to look more youthful, they only face more criticism, albeit of a different kind, just serves to underscore the larger problem at hand. If women who don’t remain young-looking are dismissed as old and “over the hill,” and women who attempt to do so with artificial measures are labeled “plastic” and “desperate,” there is no safe path for women to take as they age. This damned if you do, damned if you don’t scenario is all too commonplace in spheres that dictate the requirements of women’s appearances: Women are supposed to be thin, but are considered shallow if they watch what they eat too closely. Women are supposed to look "flawless," but are taken less seriously if they wear or show interest in makeup. Our cultural standards have set up countless situations in which women literally cannot win.

Media coverage of Aniston’s quote largely focused on her proclamation to not put any “shit into her face.” But what we actually need to focus on is on her suggestion that there is an unjust pressure in Hollywood -- and in our greater culture -- to be ageless, and then proceed to work towards eliminating said pressure. The actress had it right when she called on the industry to increase representation:

“I think fashion people need to start incorporating all ages, not just these 20-something perfect people, or not just for anti-aging [ads],” she said. “Represent beauty in all ages! You know what I mean?”

Yes, we do.

By acknowledging structural barriers to women's successes, and by increasing representation of not only different ages, but also of different races, sizes, and all kinds of appearances, we can begin to expand the notion of what it means to be a valued and valuable member of our society. We can begin to open up some of those impossible boxes, and reduce discrimination against those who fall outside the very narrow culturally endorsed norm.

Reese Witherspoon dancing is your new Taylor Swift dancing, only it's so much better. Because Witherspoon is really dancing like no one is watching, and you can tell her biggest concern is where she left her last glass of champagne.

Both TMZ and Us Weekly snagged fantastic footage of the 38-year-old actress shaking it on the dance floor at a wedding in Taverna Anema e Core in Capri, Italy, on Aug. 13. It's hard not to smile as Witherspoon lets the magic that is "I Will Survive" take over her body -- proving she's definitely someone you want on your wedding guest list.

Vogue's September 2014 Cover Leaked And It's Not What We Expected

$

Looks like Kelly Cutrone was on to something when she said the world will always need supermodels.

The (fashion) world has been waiting for every September issue to hit newsstands, but Vogue, which is one of the last issues to come out each month, is the one everyone really cares about. Now, thanks to fashion blogger Bryan Boy, the wait is (sort of) over. And boy, is it a doozy.

Bryan took to Instagram to share a snap of the glossy. The fashion mag strayed from its usual celebrity-focused covers and featured not one, but THREE models, namely Cara Delevingne, Joan Smalls and Karlie Kloss. Alongside the image, Bryan wrote, "Blockbuster American vogue cover!!!! Bravo! Blew everyone out of the water! Return to fashion!!!! Models!!"

However, with all of the endorsements these three have had this year (especially Ms. Delevingne), these models are already celebrities in their own right. Still, it's refreshing to see the most highly anticipated issue of the year feature women whose job is bringing the fashion within the pages to life.

If nothing else, perhaps this cover will finally get people to learn how to pronounce "Delevingne" correctly.

What do you think of the leaked photo? Sound off below!

Kendra Wilkinson Appears To Confirm Cheating Rumors In Reality Show Clip

$

You can't always believe everything you read, especially when it comes from the tabloids. But when a reality star is crying over the headlines in a clip from her show, it's a different story.

"Every word that came from the tabloids. Boom ... boom ... boom ... When did he do this? While you were eight months pregnant," Kendra Wilkinson tells the camera as her eyes begin to well with tears and her voice begins to break, in a teaser for her show, "Kendra On Top." "[I] felt like I was getting shot. Our marriage is down the drain."

Wilkinson appears to be confirming the rumors her husband Hank Baskett cheated on her while she was pregnant with their daughter -- rumors that were splashed on websites and across magazines earlier this summer.

In fact, the 29-year-old former Playboy model even admitted she "flushed her wedding rings down the toilet," which is exactly what a source told Us Weekly back on July 1. The magazine's source claimed that Wilkinson "grew suspicious and "started snooping," and when she discovered an unexplained charge on his credit card, she "flipped out," allegedly even punching walls, throwing wedding photos into the pool, and of course, flushing her wedding rings.

The future doesn't look good for Wilkinson and Baskett, with a source telling People magazine that the former "Girls Next Door" star is already meeting with divorce lawyers, despite the fact that the couple continue to appear together for the sake of the show.

The Disgusting Way Conservative Talk Show Hosts Talk About Michelle Obama's Body

$
0
0
Being a woman in this society pretty much means being constantly subjected to judgments about your body, but those judgments take on an entirely new pall when they are levied against the first lady.

Michelle Obama has championed campaigns for healthy eating and exercise, which of course means she should be criticized about what she eats and how she looks. Or at least that's what some talk show hosts seem to think.

The supercut above was compiled after a doctor on Fox News suggested that Obama should "drop a few pounds," a comment that was met with widespread criticism.

Newsflash, commentators: being thin doesn't mean you're healthy, being fat doesn't mean you couldn't run circles around someone smaller, and if the body is not yours, you probably shouldn't comment on it.

And women -- even first ladies -- are allowed to eat cheeseburgers.

Jennifer Lawrence Dating Chris Martin Is The Most Unexpected Rumor Of The Day

$

Well, this is unexpected.

Multiple sources have apparently confirmed to E! News that everyone's BFF, Jennifer Lawrence, is "seeing" Coldplay singer Chris Martin.

Does "seeing" mean the 24-year-old actress is able to bring her eyes into full focus when the recently separated musician is nearby? Or are they alluding to a terrible term reserved for romantic entanglements when you really aren't sure if you want to get involved with someone or not?

Whatever the case may be, Lawrence is newly single after she split with her "X-Men" co-star Nicholas Hoult for the second time, and Martin "consciously uncoupled" from his wife of 11 years, Gwyneth Paltrow, back in March. E!'s sources claim that Martin and Lawrence have been spending "quality time" together since late June.

Request for comment made by HuffPost Entertainment to both Martin and Lawrence's reps have yet to be returned at this time. But, if they are in fact dating, or "seeing" each other, we're calling it right now that they shall henceforth be known as Martin Lawrence. Sorry to the other Martin Lawrence.

Performance Artists Get Weird With Their Urban Environments

Have you ever been going about your business, meandering around your urban environment of choice, when suddenly your shirt gets caught on a rogue pole or similarly treacherous doodad? Suddenly your fate becomes indeterminate, as your thrown off balance and catapulted through the air, until you catch your footing and once again order is restored to the universe.

You know that feeling? Angie Hiesl and Roland Kaiser know that feeling.

DRESSING THE CITY AND MY HEAD IS A SHIRT - city intervention by Angie Hiesl + Roland Kaiser from Angie Hiesl on Vimeo.

The two enlisted 10 fellow performance artists for their short video "Dressing The City And My Head Is A Shirt," a "city intervention" that explores the intersection of bodies, clothing and urban spaces. The piece falls somewhere between an avant-garde performance and a playful YouTube romp, as international artists bend, twist, jump and otherwise contort their bodies in ways we never predicted, all the while incorporating their garb in the act.

The video, released in 2012 but experiencing a recent online moment, explores the limits and possibilities of movement and restraint. In what ways do our clothes restrict our bodies and in what ways do they liberate them? How are we shackled to the city and how does our city set us free? The video above may dance around the questions, but we have a feeling that's the point.

Check out the urban intervention above and see some choice still shots below.

Travel Tip: What to Pack in Your Daybag

$
0
0
This is a question that you guys have asked time and time again. When I travel, there are a few things that are always in my bag. These keep me out of sticky situations and have made all the difference when I travel.

Baby Wipes

Simple, but useful. Baby wipes have an endless number of uses. Walking around on a hot, muggy day? I use my wipes to help me keep fresh. Using a public bathroom and there's no soap? You'll be happy you have these.

2014-08-15-BabyWipes.jpg

Pro tip: Make sure that your wipes come in a small package and that they are biodegradable. I like to use baby wipes since they tend to be softer.

Bandaids

There is nothing worse than walking around all day in a beautiful city with blisters on your feet. I always have a couple of bandaids living in my wallet. They take up no space and can make all the difference.

2014-08-15-BandaidsCU.jpg

Scarf

A scarf is a great accessory to always have with you. You can use it as a pillow on the plane, as a blanket, to protect you from the rain or the sun... the possibilities are endless.

2014-08-15-SarfCU.jpg

Sunblock

A must! I always put a little bit of sunscreen in a small container and take it everywhere. It's amazing how sunburnt you can get just from walking around in the sun all day.

2014-08-15-SunblockCU.jpg

Water Spray

2014-08-15-WaterSprayCU.jpg

Freshness in a can. After a long day of walking around, there's nothing like spraying some fresh water on you face. So invigorating!

Pro tip: Make sure you get a small spray bottle!

Power bars/nuts

I don't know about you, but being hungry makes me grumpy! Keep healthy snacks in your bag just in case.

Hidden Cash

Take a small pouch and fill it up with cash. You will even forget it's there, but if you get lost in a strange city and need to take a taxi back to your hotel, this can be a lifesaver.

2014-08-15-CashCU.jpg

It sounds like a lot to carry, but all of these items (except for the scarf) fit right in a small pouch.

2014-08-15-SkullBag2.jpg

They stay compact, you can find uses for all of them no matter where you go, and they can truly be lifesaving.
