Chris Martin may have been at her side, but Gwyneth Paltrow turned heads Friday night (Jan. 10) in Los Angeles.

The 41-year-old stunner rocked a low-cut black jumpsuit at Diane von Furstenberg's "Journey of a Dress" exhibition, posing with the A-list designer as she hit the black and white carpet. Paltrow paired her plunging look with sleek straight hair, red lips and a snakeskin clutch.

Although her rocker beau was at the event, Paltrow chose not to be photographed with him, but she was snapped with friends and fellow couple, Jennifer Meyer and Tobey Maguire.

A source tells Us Weekly, that Paltrow and the Coldplay frontman, 36, were holding hands as they arrived and were spotted laughing at the party after she kissed him on the cheek.

Looking good, Gwyn!

The Right Way to Approach a Woman

I'm sitting in a new Starbucks (new to me) and I get to that happy place -- coffee perfectly doctored, laptop fired up, posture adjusted and fingers ready to fly -- when I notice a rather attractive older man entering the doors. He glances over at me and smiles, then goes about his ordering. He rounds the counter to that little spot where the drinks get dispersed to their rightful owners, pops a lid on his brew, swivels around and walks right up to my table.

"Hello," he says, with a nice dose of eye contact, "I've never seen you around here..."

"I thought I'd try a new coffee shop to write in, " I say. "Keeps it interesting."

"Well I hope you come back," he says with undeniable genuineness. "This place is much brighter with you in it. I'd drink coffee here every day if I knew a woman as beautiful as you would be in the room."

Wow. I'm blushing. Introductions follow and a few pleasantries, and then his enthusiastic farewell of "Have a wonderful day!" We didn't exchange numbers as he was at least a decade older and I think he sensed we were mismatched, but I was touched by the interaction. Of course I was flattered, but more than that, I felt admired, honored almost. I left the coffee shop a few hours later thinking, "Now that's how you approach a woman."

During another encounter I had a few years ago at a quaint little bookstore/coffee shop in Boulder, Colorado, I was relaxing enjoying my coffee when I noticed an exotic-looking, bearded man in line purchasing a book. After he finished, he turned around, walked up to my table, and promptly set the book he had just bought down on my table. He smiled and said, "This is a good one, I think you'll really like it," and then proceeded to take a seat at the far end of the shop. After that brief moment of shock that happens when a stranger breaks into your personal bubble, I opened the book and noticed a small note sticking out of the inside cover that read: "There is an ancient Japanese saying that a man can stare at a cherry blossom tree for a thousand years and never know true beauty. I think if he were to gaze into your eyes for just a moment, he would finally understand what beauty is."

The book was Way of the Peaceful Warrior and I was officially impressed. His creativity got him an introduction, a few hours of intriguing conversation and a dinner date. He was flattering without being forceful. Forward yet kind.

It seems that our culture has become overly obsessed with convenience and instant gratification, so much so that the crucial first steps of intelligent flirting get bulldozed over. It's all too easy to go from initial attraction to "hooking up" thanks to dating apps and the abandonment of the concept of courting. The truth is, we want you to charm us, captivate us and let us know that our presence has changed the temperature in the room. I'm not saying that I wouldn't give someone a chance who approached me in a simpler, less creative manner, but flattery combined with a little vulnerability goes a long way.

Also, I think originality is key when engaging the fairer sex. We want you to speak to us with a high degree of respect, to look us in the eyes and say something unique, to concoct a string of words constructed just for us. It doesn't have to be elaborate or especially deep, but it's got to be polite, positive and genuine. I've been equally intrigued by straightforward, uncomplicated lines, for instance: "It was really nice talking to you, would you mind if I called you sometime?"

Here are a few tips that might help you go from noticing a beautiful woman to spending some quality time with her:

• Don't approach us with a purely sexual line. While we do want to be noticed for our unique physical beauty, complimenting only our body is the opposite of classy. I once had a man tell me he "appreciated a woman who takes care of herself" -- borderline condescending.

• Don't walk up to us if you are too nervous. Sweating buckets, shaky hands, etc. will only make us uncomfortable. Cool confidence is appealing and inviting.

• Don't go for it when you're drunk, biggest turnoff possible.

• Location makes a big difference. It's almost expected to be approached at a bar, but it can feel like you're just trying to hook up and any attractive female will do. On the other hand, bookstores, coffee shops, grocery stores, the bank, the gym -- all places where we'll be pleasantly surprised to get noticed.

• Do not go for the ask right away. We are naturally suspicious at first, so make a point to carry on a conversation with substance for a bit before taking that leap. It says a lot that you can be articulate and are interested in getting to know us, plus we are more likely to say "yes" if you establish some degree of comfort first. We'll run at the first sign of pushiness.

• When you are ready to go for the next step, don't ask us out to dinner; it's too much of a commitment right off the bat. Suggest that we meet up for a drink, grab a cup of coffee, something short where we can get to know each other without pressure.

• Approach us within a reasonable amount of time. An interesting man can turn into a stalker quickly if a few bouts of eye contact morph into a staring session with no attempt to engage.

• Eye contact and a smile will up your chances significantly.

I'll leave you with a third and final interaction that still makes me smile. I was at the gym one afternoon, doing my thing on the leg press when this man walks right up to me and says, "Hi." My initial reaction was discomfort as I relish my workout time and don't expect to chit-chat. However, what he said after that really made my day:

"I don't normally do this, but I had to come over and meet you. You seem like a really driven and attractive person, and I was wondering if you might let me take you out some time. I really love your short hair, you don't see many girls wearing it like that and I think it is very striking on you."

Boom, floored. He was not the most attractive man, a little shorter than I typically like, and I probably wouldn't have picked him out of a crowd, but his boldness was incredibly alluring. His words seemed so honest and spontaneous that I didn't even mind him asking me out right away. He just laid it all out on the table without being rude or overeager, and it got him my phone number.

The point is, women appreciate a man who is self-assured enough to approach us yet humble enough to extend gracious compliments. You don't have to be ruggedly handsome and have six-pack abs, and you certainly don't need a book of pick-up lines (we can spot those a mile away). Act natural but put a little thought into it. Be assertive, not aggressive. Make us feel special somehow, and be sure to extend some sort of kindness our way. I have this recurring vision of being approached by a tall, dark, handsome man carrying a tall, dark, organic cup of coffee and a croissant over to my table. If I keep on writing in coffee shops, you just never know...

It's OK To Hate Wearing High Heels (Just Take It From These Famous Women)

$

0
High heels have long been seen as a key hallmark of womanhood, a symbol of sophistication that sets women apart from men and signals a female's sense of style and grace.

But let's be honest and admit that high heels can be the worst. They hurt, inflicting long-lasting damage on your muscles, bones, posture and more. They slow you down (try running to catch a bus in stilettos). And they also make you taller, a goal many petite women strive for but plenty of tall women would actually like to avoid.

So you may be shocked to learn: You don't actually need to wear them. Quietly but assuredly, several famous women have been waging their own mini battles against high heels -- and winning. Here are eight women who are proving that being a woman doesn't have to mean loving high heels.

"Why do we wear them? They're so painful." -- Emma Thompson

At the National Board of Review awards gala last Tuesday, British actress Emma Thompson accepted her Best Actress award with no shoes on. She finished her speech with the following manifesto: "I've taken my heels off as a feminist statement really, because why do we wear them? They're so painful. And pointless, really. You know, I really would like to urge everyone to stop it. Just stop it. Don’t wear them anymore. You just can't walk in them, and I’m so comfortable now."

"I have to take my shoes off, you guys." -- Lena Dunham

The "Girls" star also took to the stage to accept an award sans shoes. At the 2012 Glamour Women Of The Year Awards, Dunham walked onstage in metallic high heels; but a few sentences into her acceptance speech, she paused and told the audience, "I have to take my shoes off, you guys, I'm so sorry." After placing the pumps safely to the side, she quipped, "It was never going to go OK that way."

"I hate high heels, more than anything." -- Cara Delevingne

This top model has worn every sort of designer heel on the runways of Paris, Milan, London and New York. But Cara told Vogue UK in February 2013, "The worst part of being a model? I hate high heels, more than anything." Sure enough, when she's not on-duty, Cara can rarely be seen in anything but high-top sneakers.

"Literally, these [heels] slow you down." -- Kristen Stewart

Stewart's sneakers have become a ubiquitous red carpet staple, and the actress makes no apologies for them. "I feel more confident on my feet," she told InStyle.com in 2013. "Like in a photo, obviously, things look better wearing heels, but in terms of just kicking around and actually like experiencing an entire night, heels limit me." She added, "I feel I can experience about half of my night that I would be able to experience if I was just wearing shoes and I could run around. Literally, these [heels] slow you down."

"I do not improvise in heels." -- Amy Poehler

As a comedian who isn't afraid to be perfectly honest, Poehler told Vanity Fair, "I do not improvise in heels... I improvise in sneakers. Why would I improvise in heels? It's terrible." And why would a female comedian need heels to be funny when men can do so in flat shoes?

"[Please let my daughter] not have to wear high heels." -- Tina Fey

In her touching letter to her daughter in "Bossypants," Fey writes that she hopes her child will "not have to wear high heels" in the future (as well as avoid a whole slew of other curses associated with being a woman).

"When I'm wearing heels at events, my feet feel like they're sitting in pools of blood." -- Elizabeth Olsen

This actress takes after her famous twin sisters with her love of flats. She even wore flat sandals at the 2011 Cannes Film Festival, ground zero for glamorous get-ups (and the highest of heels). Olsen told ASOS magazine in 2012, "I don't like wearing heels. I've had a couple of times now where I feel like, by the end of the night, when I'm wearing heels at events, my feet feel like they're sitting in pools of blood. And it's really awful."

"Satan's shoes." -- Jennifer Lawrence

It's not all too surprising that the woman who face-planted while walking onstage to accept an Oscar is not a high fan of heels. (As it turns out, it was the deadly combo of high heels and a flouncy skirt that did Lawrence in that night.) Lawrence has called her heels "Satan's shoes," taking them off whenever she can (even during interviews).

Why do we do things that hurt us?

Diane Von Furstenberg Honors The Wrap Dress: 'She Made Me Famous. She Paid For All My Bills'

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Diane Von Furstenberg thought that, after 40 years, her wrap dress deserved a party.

The 67-year-old designer and dozens of her famous friends celebrated the opening Friday of "Journey of a Dress," an exhibit honoring the timeless style she introduced in the early 1970s: A flattering, easy-to-wear dress that fastens with a simple tie at the waist. "This is the first time that I ever honored the wrap dress, and she did so much for me," said an ebullient Von Furstenberg, wearing a black wrap dress with floor-skimming yellow kimono sleeves. "She made me famous. She paid for all my bills. And tonight we celebrate the wrap dress."

Marisa Tomei, Demi Moore, Tobey Maguire, Molly Sims, Edward Norton, Robin Wright and Rachel Zoe were among the many stars celebrating Von Furstenberg's enduring design.

"It's a total standard in a woman's closet," said stylist Estee Stanley, who counts Jessica Biel and Lea Michele among her clients. "It's just so easy: You throw it on, it's not uncomfortable, and it's sexy."

The exhibit at the Wilshire May Company Building, on view until April 1, features the designer's favorite dresses from throughout the decades. Scores of mannequins stand in neat rows, their narrow waists all belted, each in different versions of the wrap dress. A stunning mass stands in the center of the vacant department store, all wearing black and white.

Von Furstenberg is also known for patterns and color palettes, which splash across the exhibit space and serve as themes for the collections. A group of mannequins dressed in blues, browns and oranges stand atop a blue snakeskin-patterned floor, beside yellow geometric walls.

Part of "Journey of a Dress" is dedicated to the designer herself: Paintings and portraits of Von Furstenberg by artists including Andy Warhol and Annie Leibovitz fill one room of the exhibit. The hallway is lined with oversized reproductions of the DVF wrap dress in the pages of 1970s Vogue magazine and on models and movie stars then and now. Rene Russo, Jerry Hall and Iman wore them in the '70s, as did Cybill Shepherd in "Taxi Driver" in 1976. Michelle Obama and Madonna wore them recently. So did Amy Adams in "American Hustle."

Kiss Crashes Milan Fashion Week At John Varvatos Show (PHOTOS)

In case you thought Fashion Week was boring or stuffy, here's Kiss to remind you fashion is still rock and roll.

Gene Simmons and the rest of Kiss made a surprise appearance at Milan Menswear Fashion Week on Saturday, popping up at the end of the John Varvatos show. Walking the runway with the designer, the Kiss guys made their signature tongues-out faces and got the audience on its feet for a rendition of "Rock and Roll All Nite."

Partying with a '70s rock band isn't a run-of-the-mill occurrence at any Fashion Week show, especially in the typically staid Milan. But Varvatos has always been known for his connections to the music industry, famously setting up a store in what used to be the famed CBGB club in New York. At Saturday's show, Simmons praised Varvatos' clothes for their rock elements.

Oh, and the band has just revealed their ads for Varvatos' Spring 2014 campaign. Now we get it. We should have seen this runway "crashing" coming.

Deborah Lindquist: The Fashion of a Fantastical Future: Steampunk

$

0
At the dawn of this new year, we may feel that we are at a tipping point. The past year is just behind us, and the future is still being designed in our imagination. Maybe we want to re-write history a bit, letting go of some past memories, pull up roots, change our lifestyle. Anything is possible in our imagination, but what will we wear on our journey into the fantastical future of our dreams?

The idea of creating a futuristic alternative history is what steampunk is all about. Old-fashioned steam power plays an important role. Victorian life and silhouettes, the Wild Wild West, exploration of new worlds, technology and fantasy is all wrapped up in a fashionable hybrid of past and future.  Although steampunk "fashion" may be thought of as costume, there are elements that are wearable from day into evening.

Bustiers and Corsets:
While corsets as an underpinning gave the Victorian woman an otherwise impossible to achieve silhouette, bustiers today are sexy, wearable, and considerably more comfortable. From a middle corset to nip in the waist, a short cropped embellished bralette, or a full corset, all are designed to display and enhance your feminine assets. This vintage beaded wool and hemp/silk peplum bustier dress worn with tough-girl moto boots is both feminine and edgy. Just what the neo-Victorian steampunk girl needs to get through her day.

2014-01-12-steampunkphoto1_1.jpg

Ruffles:
Wide ruffled sleeves, face-framing ruffled necks, and skirts with a cascade of ruffles are mainstays of steampunk. Although ruffles can be thought of as romantic and demure, they are also dramatic and fun to wear. Try wearing a high necked capelet such as this ruffled reincarnated cashmere version over a bustier or simple, fitted top. The capelet keeps your shoulders warm while adding a bit of Victorian charm to your look. Add a vintage or handcrafted vintage-inspired pin to accessorize the neck.

2014-01-12-photo2capeletsteampunk_1.jpg

Futuristic Details:
Steampunk is a hybrid of past, future, and fantasy. Handcrafted, time-travel inspired accessories are prevalent. Discarded materials such as old watch parts, skeleton keys, and leftover bits of metal are translated into accessories, incorporated as hydraulic sci-fi body parts, and used on heels of shoes. This recycled cassette tape fabric middle corset with vintage leather appliques is many things: Upcycled, eco, and high-tech fantasy. Called sonic fabric, the fabric itself it actually plays sound, believe it or not . . . the perfect fantasy blend of past and future. Wear it with a simple button down shirt and a mixed media handcrafted pin at the neck.

And no steampunk look would be complete without goggles for the exploration of new worlds. Perhaps a monocle, to keep one eye on the present and one on the future. Happy New Year everyone. May your future be fashionable and historical!

As one of America's most sought after environmentally conscious designers, Deborah Lindquist creates exquisite apparel out of a mix of "reincarnated" and new Earth-friendly fabrics, such as cashmere, hemp and bamboo. Lindquist's avant-garde apparel has been showcased in numerous publications including Elle, In Style, Lucky, WWD, Vibe, People, Brides and Maxim. You can also catch her one-of-a-kind pieces during episodes of Lifetime's How to Look Good Naked and Access Hollywood's Hollywood Green. The Top Ten Cat Names Of 2013 (PHOTOS)

If an adorable new feline joined your household in 2013, you can now see if its name is a popular one.

The United States' largest pet insurance company, Veterinary Pet Insurance Co. (VPI), sorted through its database of 500,000 pets and determined the top cat names of 2013. For the second year in a row, "Bella" and "Max" topped the charts.

Curtis Steinhoff, director of Corporate Communications at VPI, acknowledged that the most favored kitten names were also among the most popular baby names. “This trend illustrates the close bond that pet owners have with their pets. Many people view their dog and cat as family members and they are naming them to reflect that human-animal bond," he said in a press release.

And if you prefer more unique, wackier names for your pet ("Fuzzbutt," anyone?), check out VPI's "2013 Most Popular Wacky Pet Names."

Take a look below to determine how your precious feline's name matches up.

Lob Haircuts Are Having A Moment In This Week's Best & Worst Beauty (PHOTOS)

Move over, pixie! The lob haircut, aka a longer version of a bob, is having a moment.

At this year's People Choice Awards, Queen Latifah debuted a new lob hairdo that looked stunning with her honey blonde hair color. And "Vanderpump Rules" reality star Katie Maloney also grabbed our attention with her brunette lob and pink lips.

See why these two stars are making us want to get a haircut (plus more standout hair and makeup) below and tell us what you think.

BEST: Queen Latifah

queen latifah

All hail the queen! She is positively glowing with her golden lob haircut and bronzed complexion. And her '90s-inspired dark lipstick adds a beautiful contrast.

BEST: Katie Maloney

katie maloney

If you didn't know who Maloney was before (like us), this hair and makeup is sure to make you remember. The budding actress' hair looks super shiny and healthy. Plus, we can't get over how her big brown eyes and bright pink lips just pop.

BEST: Amy Adams

amy adams

We'd like to welcome Adams back to the best beauty list with her slicked-back hair, dewy skin and coral-pink lips. It's a simple yet sophisticated look that anyone can recreate.

BEST: Melanie Diaz

melanie diaz

This "Fruitvale Station" star is rocking yet another one of our fave slicked-back 'dos of the week. And her bold brows and burgundy lipstick make it even sexier.

BEST: Jennifer Hudson

jennifer hudson

Hudson's pixie haircut just keeps getting better every time we see her. Here, the singer and actress pairs it with contoured foundation, brown smokey eyeshadow and matte pink lips.

WORST: Britney Spears

britney spears

While this is the best Spears has looked in years, we can't let this cornstarch yellow hair and overly-bronzed skin slide. A star of her caliber should have hair and makeup folks who can enhance her natural beauty, not mask it.

WORST: Sarah Michelle Gellar

sarah michelle gellar

We had to do a doubletake when we spotted Gellar at the People's Choice Awards wearing this unflattering updo, eye makeup and lip color. Together, the look makes her appear much older than she really is.

WORST: Ashley Rickards

ashley rickards

Everyone has bad hair days, but this is absolutely horrendous. Rickard's jet black strands appeared glued to her scalp. Even though her makeup isn't the worst we've seen, along with that nude dress, it succeeds in washing out her milky complexion.

WORST: Sally Hawkins

sally hawkins

This entire look can be described in one word: heavy. Hawkins' girly ringlets and thick eyeliner drag our eyes down. And that frosty pink lipstick is very outdated.

WORST: Jessica Chastain

jessica chastain

Chastain misses the mark (again!) with understated hair and makeup that translates into a mess on the red carpet. The actress has such gorgeous red hair and flawless skin that we'd like to see more of someday.

5 Hollywood Hair Myths (and DIY Cheats to Get Red-Carpet Hair at Home)

$
0
0
With award season once again upon us, we'll see plenty of breathtaking celebrity hair inspiration in the next few weeks, so I thought I'd debunk a few Hollywood hair myths and show you some easy ways to cheat the celebrity hair look at home.

Myth #1: The Myth of Freshly Washed Hair
Call it Hollywood's dirty little hair secret! Most women I know think that clean, just-shampooed hair is a prerequisite to having a good hair day, but that gorgeous hair you see on the red carpet? It's probably dirty. Stars are asked to show up for their Golden Globes or Oscar styling session with dry hair, preferably washed no sooner than the night before. Here's why: Dirty hair holds a style better than fresh, clean hair. And it's during the damp stage that style sets in anyway, meaning all that time you spend with the dryer and a brush styling dripping wet hair is a waste!

DIY it:
If you give up the myth of clean hair and allow yourself to wash it the night before and then just revive it in the morning, your hair will have more body and you'll have more time. To style dry hair, just dampen your brush and run it over the top layer of hair before you blow-dry and/or use products meant for styling dry hair, like dry texturizing spray, hair oil and dry shampoo, along with a straightening or curling iron (you've skipped the blow out step) to style your hair.

Myth # 2: The Myth of Red Carpet Curls
You'll never see frizzy curls on the red carpet, only perfectly defined, gorgeous waves or ringlets, even if the star's known for her naturally curly hair. What's the secret? First her hair stylist will blow hair straight to take the frizz out (kind of like ironing out the curls!) , then he'll go back in with a curling iron and put in precise waves or curls.

DIY it:
You can achieve a similar effect by applying frizz-fighting lotion or hair oil to wet or damp hair, then wrapping your hair tightly in a snail-like bun to sleeken the curl. Once dry, use a curling iron to give the curls more direction if needed.

Myth #3: The Myth of Superior Hair DNA
Not every celebrity has great hair. What they do have is great spirit... and hair confidence! To reference celebrity stylist Harry Josh's quote from my book, How To Look Expensive, "What's so great about Kate Moss's hair? It's medium-fine hair, cut to her shoulders. Nothing special. But we love it because we love the image she portrays. Attitude is everything when it comes to hair."

DIY it:
As Josh told me, "Own your hair. Even if you just pull it back, if you own it, it can look amazing." It's the 'fake it until you make it' theory... and believe me, it works. If you have hair confidence, you'll feel hair confident... and confident period!

Myth #4
The 'It's Real" Myth

You can often recognize a boob job in Hollywood, but fake hair? Tougher to catch. Stylists tell me with HD TV, you can see right through hair so they almost always have to pump it up with (invisible) extensions. Remember this as you watch stars on the red carpet and feel badly that you don't have their superior hair DNA (myth #4!).

DIY it:
There are plenty of extensions, the clip-on kind, on the mass market these days. I use them sometimes when I'm on TV and no one can tell. For a natural look you can buy some and even color them when you color your hair at home or give them to your hair stylist for a perfect match. Or you can thicken your own hair with the new volumizing powders. Got-2b, a drugstore beauty product, is my favorite. Apply to roots, massage in and your hair will look fuller instantly. For-real!

Myth #5: The Myth of The Award Show Ponytail
Those glammed up pony's you see every year walking the red carpet? I call them 'phony-tails' because even though they look like ponytails, there's nothing remotely resembling your 30 second at-home ponytail about them! These are sophisticated hair styles created by high-end, high-priced hair stylist who spends the time to first blow out, tease and curl a star's hair before pulling it back. Seriously. Celeb stylist Steven Dillon once gave me one of these dressy ponytails for an event and I sat in his chair for over an hour, a far cry from the 30 seconds it takes me to make a ponytail at home! One stylist I interviewed for my book told me he once pocketed $5000 (paid for by the movie studio of course) to make a film star's ponytail for her overseas movie premiere -- and that's not counting the cost of flying him to Europe first class and putting him up at the same chic boutique hotel as the star herself!

DIY it:
I've got some great ways to 'cheat' the time-consuming styling part and turn your own DIY ponytail into a red-carpet worthy hair style:

For a big messy celebrity ponytail, you can use a dry texturizing spray (Oribe's is my favorite) to 'tease' hair in seconds. Turn hair over your head and spritz the hell of it. Flip over your hair and pull it back, securing it with a bungee cord elastic so as not to squish the volume at the crown. For added volume, try Conair's Perfect Pony kit, which has a funky piece of plastic you place at the crown between layers of hair to create a bigger 'bump' in front of your elastic.

For a sleek ponytail, pull hair back sleek, apply some hair oil for shine, then go over the tail with a straight iron to smooth it out as if you'd blown it dry.

For a mix of the two styles, sleek front with a full tail, pull your hair into a sleek ponytail as described above, secure it with an elastic, then tease just the tail for a messy, sexy, red-carpet-worthy effect.

One more Hollywood ponytail trick: Always remember to take a piece of hair from the base of the ponytail and wrap it around the base of your ponytail to hide the elastic!

Television nominees included "Breaking Bad," "Downton Abbey," "Girls" and "Modern Family." Woody Allen will receive the Cecil B. DeMille Award for "outstanding contributions to the world of entertainment" during the 2014 Golden Globes ceremony.

Last year, "Argo" and "Les Miserables" took home top film honors, while "Homeland" and "Girls" won the lead television awards.

Check out live updates from the event below. The Golden Globes air on Jan. 16 on NBC starting at 8 p.m. ET.

Are Kate Upton And Justin Verlander Dating Again? Pair Spotted Together At Flyers Game

Sorry, fellas, Kate Upton might be off the market again.

Upton and Detroit Tigers pitcher Justin Verlander were spotted together at the Wells Fargo Arena in Philadelphia on Saturday, Jan. 11. The two were watching the Tampa Bay Lightning take on the Philadelphia Flyers, the Detroit Free Press reported via multiple local blogs.

People began tweeting about the sighting while at the game.

The two were also apparently spotted at Ciccio's/Water in Tampa, Fla., on Jan. 6.

The sightings have some wondering if the couple are back on after months apart.

Upton and Verlander were first linked in July 2012. His family apparently confirmed the romance rumors that October. But, by June 2013, the fireworks had reportedly fizzled.

The Sports Illustrated stunner went on to date "Dancing with the Stars" pro Maksim Chmerkovskiy. The two broke things off in December.

In November, the 21-year-old beauty told CBS what she looks for in a man. Two things on her list: confidence and a willingness to share.

"If you don't share your food. It's a complete deal-breaker for me because I have no boundaries when it comes to food, I don't know why," she said.

Katy Perry Scales The Great Wall Of China, Does The Splits

While many of Hollywood's A-list stars gathered at the 71st annual Golden Globe Awards, Katy Perry was half a world away and still hoping to claim the award for "best dressed" that evening.

Far from the festivities at the Beverly Hilton, Perry spent the day exploring one of the world's most recognizable historical landmarks in a way we haven't seen before. The 29-year-old singer scaled the Great Wall of China and felt it was the perfect spot to do the splits.

The rather flexible pop star shared a photo of the moment on her Instagram account, just as the awards ended on Sunday night (Jan. 12), and, perhaps feeling left out, she captioned the photo, "#bestdressed #goldenglobes." In leggings, a hoodie and a conical straw hat, Perry might have been named most-comfortably dressed.

Hey, we're just glad Perry didn't choose to go the Justin Bieber route on her trip to the Great Wall.

Why Did Reese Introduce '12 Years A Slave'? And Other FAQs About The 2014 Golden Globes

The 71st annual Golden Globes were full of surprises, upsets and a lot of people talking about drinking. Maybe you watched the whole thing. Maybe you switched over to "Girls" and missed some of the most head-scratching moments. In any case, we bring you the most frequently asked questions from the Globes ceremony.

Why did Reese Witherspoon introduce "12 Years A Slave"?

Because she's from New Orleans, y'all! Just kidding. There's speculation that Witherspoon introduced "12 Years" on account of her affiliation with Fox Searchlight Productions (she was announced as the star of "Wild," which the studio will release this coming spring). That said, the whole thing mostly just felt like these movie posters.

What was going on with that Jacqueline Bisset person?

Well, hold on. That Jacqueline Bisset person deserves some respect! She's been in the industry for a long time. As she put it: "I think it was was 47 years ago that the Hollywood Foreign Press gave me a ... promising newcomer." It was actually 45 years ago for her role in "The Sweet Ride," but whatever. She rambled, but that was because she was thinking about dinner.

Stop trying to be funny. Do acceptance speeches even really matter?

Actually, yeah. The Globes sort of function as a test run for the Oscars, in which Oscar voters can get an idea of what to expect in terms of an acceptance speech. As Scott Feinberg pointed out over at The Hollywood Reporter, "several people who are in close Oscar contests" -- such as Leonardo DiCaprio and Matthew McConaughey -- "did give themselves boosts with classy, funny and moving words at the podium."

Oh, so the Globes can basically predict who will win at the Oscars?

Not really, but it might be significant that a relatively wide swath of contenders won Globes. "12 Years A Slave," "Gravity," "Blue Jasmine," "The Great Beauty," "Frozen," "Her," "The Wolf Of Wall Street," "Mandela: Long Walk To Freedom" and "All Is Lost" all took home one award, in addition to two wins for "Dallas Buyers Club" and three for "American Hustle." "There was a different movie winning Picture ('American Hustle,' '12 Years A Slave'), Director ('Gravity') and Screenplay ('Her')," Pete Hammond noted at Deadline, "And that really shows how divided voters are about this year’s impressive lineup of movies."

Wait, so Leo is going to finally win an Oscar this year?

It's a real possibility! Leo's been nominated three times, for "Blood Diamond" (2006), "The Aviator" (2004) and "What's Eating Gilbert Grape" (1993). There are a lot of theories as to why he is only nominated and never wins, ranging from child-star syndrome to the quality of the films (are they "so great that they're eclipsing his powerful performances"?). In any case, the graciousness of his speech certainly didn't hurt his Best Actor chances, though it came too late to affect the Oscar nominations: voting for the Academy Awards closed on Jan. 8.

But I really want him to win!

We do, too.

Will tuxedo scarves become a thing now?

Maybe tuxedo scarves are presented at a special ceremony honoring veteran actors, perhaps held in a hunting lodge or a sauna. The whole thing is shrouded in secrecy, but you could probably just ask Jon Voight.

Why was everyone so upset about Woody Allen?

Woody Allen was honored for the Cecil B. DeMille lifetime achievement award, which Diane Keaton accepted in his place, by thanking him for his treatment of women in film (before singing an uncomfortable rendition of the Girl Scout friendship song). Perhaps because Keaton specifically mentioned Allen being great at "women-things," but also because of his extremely controversial past, many took issue with Allen's award and the validity of his being lauded for a lifetime that included marrying Mia Farrow's adoptive daughter and allegedly abusing another of Farrow's daughters. Farrow and her son, Ronan, were quite clear about their feelings on the matter.

Wait, that awkward song was from the Girl Scouts?

Apparently! You can cringe over all 45 seconds of it here.

When is Jennifer Lawrence going to get used to giving acceptance speeches?

Probably never. She's won, like, a lot of awards (including an Oscar and two Golden Globes). As Christopher Rosen noted, Lawrence's biggest competition at the Oscars will likely be Lupita Nyong'o, though whether the "12 Years A Slave" star can defeat America's Best Friend remains to be seen. As Amy Poehler and Tina Fey put it during the Golden Globes, "This is Hollywood, and if something kinda works, they'll just keep doing it until everyone hates it." At least she doesn't fake surprise.

Do I have to start watching "Brooklyn Nine-Nine" now?

Kind of! The show's only had 12 episodes and it won Globes for "Best Comedy" and "Best Actor in a TV Comedy." Andy Samberg was just as surprised about his win as everyone else, but "Brooklyn Nine-Nine" boasts an excellent ensemble cast which does an impressive job handling gender and race while perpetually maintaining a tone just north of "silly." It's possible that after these major surprise wins, the show -- which has brought in only modest ratings this season -- will be heading towards a second season surge, much like "The Office" saw back in 2005.

Why did Tina Fey tell Amy Poehler there's a "special place in hell" for her? I thought they were best friends!

Don't be a fool! Tina and Amy are the best friends that ever were and ever will be. That was a jab at Taylor Swift. Perhaps you'll recall last year, when Fey and Poehler joked that Swift had "better stay away from Michael J. Fox's son"? Well, Swift did not like that, telling Vanity Fair that Katie Couric told her that there is "a special place in hell for women who don't help other women." In other words, that subtle comment held a wealth of rightful passive aggression. Point Tina.

71st Annual Golden Globes Hit A Seven Year Ratings High

Well, it's a fact: America loves Tina Fey and Amy Poehler.

Early ratings for the 71st Golden Globes are in and NBC should be popping (more) champagne because Sunday's (Jan. 12) telecast was the most-watched in seven years.

According to Entertainment Weekly, the awards ceremony had "17 million viewers and a 5.4 rating among adults 18-49," up 8 percent from 2013, and 21 percent from two years ago.

With ratings up from last year, viewers must really enjoy Fey and Poehler, which is good news as NBC is set to welcome the pair back in 2015. A boon to NBC, the duo signed a two-year deal to host the awards ceremony. All hail Amy and Tina!

UPDATE: Deadline reports as of Monday (Jan. 13) at 1:25 p.m. EST that the ratings for Sunday night's Golden Globe telecast was actually 20.9 million viewers, a six percent jump from last year, making it the most-watched Golden Globes ceremony since 2004.
