Alessandra Ambrosio: Plastic Surgery Freaks Me Out After My Botched Ear Pinning

$

A wise supermodel once said, "Models are some of the most insecure people I've ever met." And how.

Alessandra Ambrosio provided further proof of this theory in an interview with The Edit, in which the Victoria's Secret model revealed a surprising insecurity: her ears. While it might seem strange for the "Sexiest Woman Alive" to be zeroing in on such a small detail, Ambrosio claims it all began after attempting to fix her protruding ears when she was 11 years old:

"I always knew I wanted to be a model so I decided to have my ears pinned back, because they stuck out a bit. I found this doctor in my hometown [of Erechim] in Brazil who had only done it once before, so I was a guinea pig. The first few nights, it felt like someone had cut off my ears. For a year, I had to go back for mini-surgeries. Doctors say they can fix them, but cosmetic surgery freaks me out now."

Of course, Ambrosio isn't the first star to regret dabbling in plastic surgery. When speaking about the breast implants she got at 19, Denise Richards said, "I wish that I was confident enough with my body to not have had surgery." Carmen Electra, Courtney Love and Lisa Rinna have also expressed remorse about going under the knife. If the celebrities who supposedly set these beauty standards can nitpick and find the most minute flaws, then perhaps our expectations have surpassed the realm of possibility -- even with the added edge of plastic surgery.

Our takeaway? Embrace what you've got and stop stressing about being "perfect." You'll save yourself some agony... and lots of cash.

We can't spot a single flaw...

Kelly Ripa's Abs Put Pretty Much Everyone Else's To Shame

Kelly Ripa, can we have your abs for Christmas?

The talk show host bared her toned tummy on Twitter yesterday (Dec. 11), posting a photo of herself with her legs stretched up against a wall, which reads, "Whether you think you can or you can't -- you're right."

"Thank you @AKTINMOTION and @TheKaiserTweet for letting me lean on you," Ripa wrote, thanking her trainer Anna Kaiser, who founded the AKT inMotion Manhattan workout studio.

The 43-year-old's six (or is it 10?)-pack, quite possibly puts every other person's abs to shame, including Madonna's.

Ripa is seriously ripped.

Looking for Humane Angora? It Exists!

Ambika Friendly Furs

In the wake of the PETA expose of the horrors of the angora industry, people were disgusted, saddened and angry: Here's a link to the video, but in short, it's awful, awful, awful. The facts are that:
Ninety percent of angora fur comes from China, where there are no penalties for abuse of animals on farms and no standards to regulate the treatment of the animals. When you buy a sweater, hat or other product that contains angora, the angora fur most likely originated in China, even if the finished product was assembled elsewhere.

In response, H&M suspended its angora production, and since then, several Eco Chick readers have asked me about ethical angora. Is it possible?

AngoraBunnies

The truth is that all animals are mistreated in the conventional fast fashion industry; there's just no way to support healthy animal welfare in the cutthroat, deadline-obsessed fashion world (including wool; it is common for sheep to be violently shorn and hurt during shearing). One solution, is, of course, to go vegan with your clothing choices.

But there are animal-loving designers who have committed to making truly cruelty-free fashions from harvested fur (the animal is not killed, but shorn or brushed to remove usable fiber); they make wonderful and terrifically long-lasting pieces that, if cared for properly, can be worn for decades and even be passed on from generation to generation.

Supporting those people who are raising animals for their wool (sheep, alpaca), goats (cashmere), or rabbits (angora) and who are doing it in a sustainable way, gives artisans incredible raw materials, results in high-quality, long-lasting -- and incredibly warm -- pieces, and preserves open space for farmlands.

friendlyfurs_main

Ambika Conroy, designer (and creator!) of Ambika Friendly Furs is one such maker. She cares for her flock of angora bunnies herself on her upstate New York farm, harvests their fur when they molt (which only happens on the bunnies own internal schedule, not on ours), spins the thread into fiber, and knits it by hand into hats, scarves, jackets, legwarmers and ear muffs (shown above and at top).

You can read all about her process on her extensive From Bunny to Fur page. In the video below, you can see exactly how she gathers the angora wool from her bunnies, in stark contrast to the way PETA showed it done in China.

ambika legwarmers

I have visited Ambika's farm and personally saw how she treated her animals, which was with love, caring and grace. Which is why her creations are especially beautiful; they shine with compassion and care as well as the natural beauty of the angora (and yes, it's as soft as it looks in these pictures!)

Is ethical angora possible? We have our answer: Certainly, just watch Conroy speak, above. That's a happy bunny!

The 3 Worst Food Mistakes You Can Make For Your Skin

$
0
0
In 2008 alone, Americans spent $35 billion on cosmetics and skincare. But are all these dollars wasted when we follow a diet that causes acne, premature aging and other skin conditions? It sure seems so.

"A typical American diet is full of foods and beverages that are bad for your skin," Julie Upton, MS, RD, a registered dietitian and co-founder of Appetite for Health, told us. With the help of Upton and Elizabeth M. Ward, MS, RD, we've narrowed down the worst dietary mistakes we're making when it comes to our skin.

1. Packing In Simple Sugars

ice cream

"Nobody heads for a bag of carrots when they've had a bad day," Ward says. "They're going for the pint of premium ice cream in the freezer." But this choice might just make your bad day even worse if you take note of what's happening to your skin. Foods with added sugars spike your blood sugar and cause chronic inflammation in the body, which damages your collagen and elastin in a process known as glycation. The digested sugar permanently attaches to the collagen in your skin, and it happens each time you eat sugary foods like candy, ice cream, condiments and processed foods. Skin conditions like acne and rosacea can be exacerbated by glycation.

"This whole process is metabolically very damaging," Upton says, and she recommends satisfying your sweet tooth with antioxidant-rich natural sugars, like those found in fruits, to neutralize the inflammation caused by sugar and insulin spikes.

2. Eating Too Many Starchy, High-Glycemic Foods

pasta

"High-glycemic index diets are linked to premature aging of the skin," says Upton. Starches like white bread, pasta and white rice cause rapid spikes in blood sugar, which leads to inflammation in the body. This process produces enzymes that break down collagen and elastin, giving you sagging skin and wrinkles. What's more, studies have shown that swapping high-glycemic foods for their low-glycemic counterparts, like whole grains and beans, can improve acne, suggesting that high-glycemic foods actually spark breakouts. So the next time you're craving a piece of bread, you may want to think about opting for whole grains, which are low-glycemic, anti-inflammatory and rich in antioxidants.

3. Forgetting To Count Beverages

soda

"The number one source of added sugars in the US diet is beverages," says Upton. Just like in food, sugar found in liquids can contribute to premature aging, acne and other inflammatory skin conditions, especially since sugar in beverages like juice and soda are absorbed into the bloodstream very quickly. Sodas might just be the biggest culprit, since many dark colas contain advanced glycation end products (AGEs), which give them their dark color and have been shown to speed up the process of skin aging.

Excessive amounts of alcohol also wreak havoc on your skin, since alcoholic beverages dehydrate your skin and therefore accelerate aging. Water in your cells is what keeps skin plump and dewy and reduces the look of lines and wrinkles. "If you're not drinking enough water during the day on a regular basis and then you're having a couple of glasses of wine every night, you're really hitting your skin up twice there," says Ward. Some people also get very flushed from drinking alcohol with sulfites, she adds. If you're concerned about the effects of dehydration on the skin, you may also want to avoid caffeinated beverages, which constrict your blood vessels, reduce circulation and cause dehydration.

The bottom line: Both Ward and Upton recommend drinking plenty of water and eating a diet rich in fiber, protein and healthy fats, like those found in fish, to fend off aging and inflammatory skin conditions. And while the results of eating well may not manifest as quickly as a chemical peel or Botox, don't underestimate the power of nutrition. "A lot of beauty is how you feel about yourself," Upton says. "You don't exude confidence when you eat candy and soda all day. You just don't. "

Jack White, Karen Elson Divorce Finalized

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — A Nashville judge has finalized the divorce between Jack White and British model and singer Karen Elson.

Court records show the final divorce agreement was signed by a judge on Nov. 26. The agreement names Elson as the primary residential parent for the couple's two children and White will get about 150 days with them. White also retained rights to all his musical businesses, including The White Stripes, The Raconteurs, Dead Weather and his record label, Third Man Records. Karen Elson married White in 2005 in Nashville, but Elson filed for divorce last year.

Although the separation started off amicably, earlier this year Elson filed for a restraining order and accused White of threatening her, which White denied. A spokeswoman for White did not return email and telephone messages left Thursday.

Jennifer Lawrence Picks Out Clothes The Way We Do

$

We always loved Jennifer Lawrence for her lighthearted, unfiltered nature, but we love her even more when she puts it to really good use. (A prime example: That time she took an unequivocal stand on body scrutiny: "What are you going to do? Be hungry every single day to make other people happy? That's just dumb.")

Turns out Lawrence has the same sensible, realistic approach to clothes. In a new interview with the Telegraph, she confessed that the glamorous outfit she had on wasn't hers... and she chose it for rather unglamorous reasons:

She is wearing a tight white sweater with Marc Jacobs black pants and crystal-encrusted black heels. A diamond pendant hangs around her neck and a large ring shines on her finger. "None of this is mine,” she says. "I have to give it back." Then she adds, with a laugh: "Make as much news of the jewelry as you can and then maybe I'll get it for free. And the clothes? I looked at my options, tried this on and it was comfortable and covered up my stomach roll when I sat down. So I went with it."

You can choose outfits for being trendy, fancy and myriad other reasons. But let's be real: Many women pick their clothes based on how they feel about their bodies at that very moment. Hence the all-too ubiquitous sentence: "I'm having a fat day."

Lawrence certainly has no need to cover up her stomach or any other part of her body, for that matter. But if there's one thing any woman can relate to, it's the desire to feel good about her body in the clothes she's wearing.

And, for what it's worth, J.Law, we really hope you got to keep the jewelry.

Let's get real:

Cameron Diaz posed without makeup while promoting her new nutrition book, "The Body Book," and looked lovely doing it!

Diaz posted the makeup-free photo to her Instagram account Wednesday (Dec. 11). In the shot, she appears fresh-faced and smiling, wearing a cozy sweater and hugging a copy of the book.

"One of my proudest moments! Receiving the first bound copy of The Body Book!! @thebodybook LADIES!! I wrote this book for YOU and YOUR BODY.. And I'm so excited to share it with you!! You can pre-order it now. #loveyouramazingbody," she wrote.

On Thursday (Dec. 12), she posted a makeup-free throwback pic from when she was first writing the book.

"The Body Book" is a guide to becoming "happier, healthier, and stronger." Diaz wrote the book to teach young girls about a healthy lifestyle.

"She wants to stop their fixation on being thin, and for teenage girls to understand that being healthy is more important," a publishing source told E! News last year. "She wants to use her celebrity to make a difference. She knows she is a role model to girls and she really wants to use that position to do good. This book is not about weight, it's about making the right choices."

Beyoncé Gets Sassy With Joan Smalls, Chanel Iman & Jourdan Dunn In New 'Yoncé' Video

Christmas came twelve days early this year with the unexpected debut of Beyoncé's brand spankin' new album today. So it's no surprise we've spent the past hour marveling at her clever marketing skills and watching all 17 of the 30-second video previews from her long awaited project.

Bey's music videos are always epic -- stunning outfits, hot dance moves and sexy hair -- but our fashion-loving hearts were particularity moved by her visual for the song "Yoncé" which just happens to feature three of the world's biggest supermodels: Joan Smalls, Chanel Iman and Jourdan Dunn.

From what we can see, the scantily clad crew of cuties are writhing, strutting and lip-syncing to the song alongside Beyoncé on a deserted block somewhere outrageously beautiful women and superstars hang.

We were already hip to the fact that Mrs. Carter had cast Dunn along with fellow models Jessica White and Diandra Forrest in her "XO" video, but this one is strictly supermodels -- and we're loving it!

Check out the preview of the "Yoncé" video above...and we dare you not to drool!

David Koma Joins The Big Leagues As Thierry Mugler Artistic Director

There's a new fashion designer joining the big leagues, and he's only 28 years old.

You might not have heard his name, or if you have, it was probably in passing reference to a celebrity's red carpet dress. But Women's Wear Daily reports that David Koma, a London-based designer, has been named the newest artistic director of Thierry Mugler.

The decades-old French fashion label said its surprising hire is intended to reenergize the brand. "We want to write a new page for Mugler, putting it back on the map in the fashion business," said Virginie Courtin-Clarins, director of development, marketing and communications at Mugler Fashion, to WWD.

Mugler has, of course, been somewhat on the map in the past few years. Its Thierry Mugler Angel fragrance is a popular one, with Eva Mendes fronting recent campaigns, and stars like Lady Gaga have worn the brand at major events.

But Mugler hasn't had a solid head designer since Nicola Formichetti left in April 2013 after three years at the helm. Now the label can start fresh with Koma, a young designer with a growing group of celebrity fans. We first noticed Koma, in fact, when Miley Cyrus sported one of his youthful, futuristic dresses at the People's Choice Awards in 2012 (yes, in her pre-buzz cut days) -- it was one of our favorite things we'd ever seen Miley wear.

Check out a few of Koma's dresses below. Think this designer can transform the Mugler brand into a major fashion player?

Why I Decided to Come Out as HIV-Positive on 'Project Runway: All Stars'

$

viktor luna

To my Friends, Family and Fans:

I'd like to thank you all for the continued support and concern over my health.

When I was approached to be on this current season of Project Runway: All Stars, I decided that this time, I wanted to be seen for who I truly am. For those who remember me during Project Runway, Season 9, I was very protective of my feelings and how I was portrayed on camera. Many thought I was just quiet, but in truth, I was just hiding from the world. This season, I wanted to let it all out and be myself. You've seen me laugh, cry and openly share my feelings, but I haven't shared everything -- until now. To complete this process with myself, and to truly feel free, I chose to reveal my HIV status. In doing this, I have come to accept the virus inside me, and I now know this little thing isn't going to stop me anymore.

I discovered that I was HIV positive about seven years ago, and so many feelings surfaced: terror, devastation, embarrassment, loneliness and shame. I woke up every morning crying and feared that death was right around the corner. It took me about three years to finally come to terms with what I was living with. I decided to go out and audition for Project Runway to prove that this won't stop me from accomplishing my dreams.

Today, HIV is completely different than its initial introduction into the world. Modern medicine is continually changing HIV into a virus that people live with, not die from. I find great comfort in the support and resources provided to people living with HIV and AIDS today. In retrospect, I realized the stigma of AIDS was making me feel worthless. Still, as far as we've come, there are still many people living with the HIV virus and AIDS, and there is still no known cure. The virus does not care if you are straight, gay, what skin color you are, or even if you are the sweetest person alive -- everyone who is sexually active is at risk, and it should not be classified as a "gay epidemic."

As a public figure, and as an "All Star," it was my duty to be one of the many people to show that you are not alone, and you can still follow your dreams. I've shared my status with my family and my partner, all who embraced me with love and open arms. It was like lifting a huge boulder off my shoulder, and I finally feel completely proud of the person I am. With this responsibility, I hope I can create an impact and open awareness to you, and to everyone else.

Remember, we are all one, and only as one can we truly make a difference.

Peace and Love,

Viktor Luna

Former "Full House" star Candace Cameron Bure, who played teenage daughter D.J. Tanner on the show, opens up to Omg! Insider about her battle with bulimia after her eight years on set.

Cameron Bure, 37, has a new book out, "Balancing It All," and in it, she says, she talks "about the emotional struggle that I had in dealing with just a totally new life." She's referring to her marriage to professional hockey player Valeri Bure. She married him when she was 20 and moved to Montreal for his career.

"That really was the time of identifying with being an actress and that being my whole life, and then now being someone's wife and moving to a new city, a new country even."

"I turned to food for comfort and had to find a different source, because clearly it wasn't a healthy way to deal with things," she continues. "So that's really when my faith was kicked up a notch and sought comfort in my relationship with God -- and not with food."

For more with Candace, how the "Full House" producers shielded her while on the hit series and how that episode where D.J. went on a crash diet for a few days was handled, head over to omg.yahoo.com.

Miley Cyrus may have performed her hit songs at the annual Jingle Ball concert at Madison Square Garden in shimmery red undies and a crop top, but she arrived to the event looking tamer than we're used to. Tame for Miley, that is.

The 21-year-old walked the red carpet last night (Dec. 13) in wide black and yellow-striped pants and a sheer white top which allowed for her black bra to peek through.

Jason Derulo, Selena Gomez, Robin Thicke, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, Fall Out Boy, Austin Mahone and Ariana Grande also performed at the festive event.

Jennifer Lawrence's Photoshop Job On Flare Cover Makes The Internet Rounds (PHOTO, GIFS)

Leave it to the fashion world to find flaws in Jennifer Lawrence's appearance.

A GIF circulating the blogosphere has caused a June 2011 Flare magazine cover of the actress to resurface, bringing the gratuitous Photoshop job to the world's attention. In the resulting cover, it appears as if J.Law has been slimmed down and given protruding collarbones and more prominent, sunken-in cheekbones. Oy vey.

Funny enough, Jennifer might just be one of the most outspoken celebrities when it comes to calling out the pseudo perfectionism of Hollywood starlets as portrayed in the media. Upon seeing her recent ads for Christian Dior, the "American Hustle" star proudly proclaimed, "That doesn't look like me a at all," adding that Photoshop was certainly to blame.

Then, in November, while in conversation with Yahoo! CEO Marissa Meyer, Jennifer explained the issue further. "The world has this idea that if you don't look like an airbrushed perfect model," she said. "You have to see past it. You look how you look, you have to be comfortable. What are you going to do? Be hungry every single day to make other people happy? That's just dumb."

Amen, sister. See the aforementioned GIFs and cover below and tell us: Do you think it's good for us to constantly be seeing images that are the result of such heavy-handed retouching?

Princess Eugenie Takes In A Basketball Game In Head-To-Toe Black Like A True New Yorker

Princess Eugenie has been living in New York City for the past few months, working for New York-based art auction house Paddle8 and enjoying the best the metropolis has to offer: pizza, Lululemon, hipster clothing... and now, courtside seats at the Knicks game.

The royal was spotted on Saturday night watching the New York Knicks beat the Atlanta Hawks at Madison Square Garden. Eugenie sat in the best seats in the house alongside Michelle Trachtenberg, Michael K. Williams and Christie Brinkley, although from the looks of it, Eugenie didn't seem to be pals with any of them.

Instead, she looked like many Brits probably look at NBA games: slightly confused. But at least she dressed the part in head-to-toe black with a luxe quilted mini-bag. Plus, maybe she got friendly with the supermodel in her row. Christie and Eugenie becoming BFFs? That would just about blow our minds.

Beachy Waves For Winter Topped This Week's Best & Worst Beauty List (PHOTOS)

We may be in the thick of winter, but many stars are sporting one of our favorite summer hairdos: beachy waves.

Jessica Biel kept it casual at "The Truth About Emanuel" Los Angeles premiere with her ombré hair in tousled waves, and Gabrielle Union went glamorous with voluminous waves cascading down her back. Meanwhile, Reese Witherspoon gave her new bob haircut a twist with loose and layered waves.

Check out these beachy hairstyles (and more head-turning looks) and tell us what you think.

BEST: Jessica Biel

jessica biel

Could Mrs. Timberlake look any cooler? The actress' beachy hair, matte face makeup, subtle glitter eyeshadow and pink lipstick add a feminine flair to her leather jacket.

BEST: Gabrielle Union

gabrielle union

The "Being Mary Jane" star is positively glowing with her clean skin, curled lashes, glossy lips and big, beachy hair. It's simple yet sophisticated, and you can easily recreate this hair and makeup at home.

BEST: Reese Witherspoon

reese witherspoon

We love the blonde beauty's shorter hair even more with her spin on winter beachy waves. Her bronze eye makeup and coral orange lipstick add warmth to her milky complexion.

BEST: Blake Lively

blake lively

Blake Lively's honey-blonde locks are absolutely stunning styled into these lush, deep waves. The gold highlighter placed at the inner corners of her eyes is a beauty trick to make eyes of any color pop. And her bordeaux wine lip color completes the old Hollywood-inspired look.

BEST: Demi Lovato

demi lovato

Wow! We haven't seen makeup this immaculate in a mighty long time. But Lovato's flawless foundation, frosty pink blush and lipstick do well to balance out her blue-streaked updo.

WORST: Christina Applegate

christina applegate

The "Anchorman 2" actress missed the mark with this red carpet beauty look. Applegate's updo hairstyle seems unintentionally messy, that winged-out liner draws attention to her crow's feet and the pale pink lip color blends in with the rest of her nude ensemble.

WORST: Megan Good

megan good

The shape of Good's eyebrows may be on the thinner side, but it is flawless. However, the ghostly grey shadow she used to fill in those brows clashes with her caramel complexion.

WORST: Evangeline Lilly

evangeline lilly

The pompadour hairstyle is a classic 'do that not many people can pull off today, and we think it doesn't work particularly well here for Lilly. The shimmering eye makeup and lip gloss are also unflattering.

WORST: Halley Feiffer

halley feiffer

When wearing bright pink lipstick AND blush, women with fair skin tones like Feiffer's run the risk of appearing red in the face. Less cheek color would have easily turned this look around.

WORST: Edie Campbell

edie campbell

Why is it that in 2013 celebrities are still mimicking "Black Swan" eye makeup? We find it really hard to take Campbell seriously. At least her pixie looks great...

What Your Winter Wardrobe Needs Is A Pop Of Color

It's getting to be that time of season, when the sun isn't always shining and you look outside your window only to be disappointed by the dreariness. With winter gloom comes the desire to hibernate indoors and curl up on the couch with a cup of hot chocolate. But this somberness, unfortunately, also creeps into our wardrobes -- our black, gray and white items of clothing remain a constant.

So this week, we're making a change. We rounded up a few pictures that prove that with just a pop of color, whether it be from a Santa hat, a pair of socks or a multi-colored umbrella, snowy winter days needn't be dreary.

Judy Garland's 'Valley Of The Dolls' Wardrobe Test Shows Rare Unscripted Moments (VIDEO)

$

Judy Garland playing Helen Lawson in "Valley of the Dolls" may just be the best film role that never happened.

The actress was infamously cast and then fired from the 1967 production, but not before she had a chance to try on all of the gorgeous '60s-era costumes for a wardrobe test (above). That Garland's casting was hardly a coincidence wasn't lost on most people, particularly Patty Duke, who played the talented yet drug-addled Neely O'Hara, a character supposedly based on Garland. "But nobody was allowed to say that," Duke recalled in 2009. "I wasn't allowed to say I was playing Judy."

Duke also described the events leading up to Garland's unceremonious dismissal from the film:

"She was charming and funny -- oh, very funny -- but she was having a problem with alcohol and I don't know about other things. So the director, who was the meanest son of a bitch I ever met in my life... he kept [Judy] waiting and waiting. She had to come in at 6:30 in the morning and he wouldn't even plan to get to her until four in the afternoon. She was very down to earth, so she didn't mind waiting. What I minded was that there were gentlemen around her who supplied her with wine and other things, so when she finally did get called to the set, she couldn't function very well... and she crumbled."

Yup, sounds like Neely O'Hara to us. Like her fictional counterpart, Garland did eventually bounce back again, opening at The Palace shortly after... wearing the very same suit she models in the "Valley of the Dolls" wardrobe test. Go figure.

In honor of the 46th anniversary of the film's release, we're taking a look back at Garland's memorable wardrobe test for "Valley of the Dolls." Watch the video above.

She always had classic style:

Vogue is kicking off 2014 with a cover showcasing Celine's newest collection, full of crisp lines and primary colors. But the star it's chosen to model the clothes is a rather familiar face: Cate Blanchett.

The Aussie actress is the star of Vogue's latest issue, making it her fifth cover for the mag. Photographed by Craig McDean, Cate certainly looks lovely in Celine. But we're beginning to wonder if Vogue isn't getting a little too comfortable with the stunning blonde star...

There are plenty of rising stars who could've jumpstarted the year with great Vogue covers, such as an "every girl" TV fave like Lena Dunham or Mindy Kaling, or an of-the-moment model like Cara Delevingne or Suki Waterhouse, or an up-and-coming voice like Lorde, or a funny gal like Amy Poehler or Sarah Silverman, or an outspoken body image crusader like Robyn Lawley or Demi Lovato...

The list is endless. Alas, Vogue found an old favorite in Cate Blanchett. Would you like to see Vogue mix things up a little?
