Even Without The Sex Stuff, Dov Charney Was A Terrible CEO

$

0
The biggest question about American Apparel's ousting of chief executive Dov Charney might be why it didn't happen long ago.

In a press release Wednesday, American Apparel's board of directors said their decision to remove Charney "grew out of an ongoing investigation into alleged misconduct." While the company doesn't give a reason for his firing, Charney has been at the center of several lawsuits filed by former employees, accusing him of sexual and other harassment. He also has a reputation for lewd behavior.

But Charney easily could have been fired many times for a more obvious reason: Quite simply, his company has performed terribly under his leadership in recent years.

"As a CEO he failed on the most basic of levels," said Brian Sozzi, chief equities analyst at Belus Capital Advisors. He called the board's lack of action until now a "great mystery."

American Apparel's business has struggled for years. The company hasn't posted an annual profit since 2009 and has racked up $270 million in losses since the beginning of 2010. The clothing chain was brought to the brink earlier this year when it faced a debt payment and didn't have enough cash on hand to pay. Charney found an investor just in time.

Supply-chain problems have plagued the retailer, which makes its assortment of casual clothes in the United States. A federal investigation in 2009 found that thousands of employees at an American Apparel factory complex in downtown Los Angeles had problems with their status as legal workers. The company was forced to fire about 1,800 immigrant workers, nearly a third of its workforce. Then in 2012, the opening of a new distribution center proved disastrous, costing the retailer millions and leaving it short on cash.

Some of Charney's broader strategic decisions haven't worked either. In 2010, excessive expansion nearly bankrupted the retailer. More recently, sales withered as American Apparel tried to weather the assault from rapidly expanding fast-fashion monoliths Zara, H&M and Forever 21, which bring styles from the runway to store shelves in weeks.

Shares of the company's stock have dropped below $1 this year after trading as high as $15 per share in 2007.

american apparel

Retailers have fired CEOs for less, Brean Capital analyst Eric Beder told HuffPost. The fact that the board didn't show Charney the door in 2013 or before makes it more likely this decision isn't related to company performance, he noted. And lately, American Apparel has improved.

Antony Karabus, CEO of Hilco Retail Consulting, said Charney received so many lifelines over the past few years, even as the mistakes piled up around him, because he was American Apparel's well-known figurehead. But now, as the business becomes more complex and competition ramps up, the retailer needs a more experienced, professional executive at its helm.

"It's time to separate the individual from the company," said Karabus.

The board has suspended Charney and moved to fire him after a 30-day waiting period, as required by his contract. Chief Financial Officer John Luttrell, a veteran of retailers Old Navy, Wet Seal and Cost Plus, has been named interim CEO while the company searches for a full-time replacement.

"We take no joy in this, but the board felt it was the right thing to do," Allan Mayer, the company's newly appointed co-chairman, said in a statement.

A spokesman for Sitrick & Co., an external firm to which American Apparel's public relations department referred questions, declined to comment beyond the press release. Attempts to reach Charney by phone were not successful.

Johannes Minho Roth, whose investment firm owns a stake of about 13 percent in American Apparel, speculated to Bloomberg that the company may be planning for a sale.

Whatever the case, Charney hasn't quite yet been defeated. The L.A. Times reported that the embattled executive is determined to fight to the very end to regain control of the company.

2014-06-19-1.brothers.jpg

These three brothers are taking their family's tailoring tradition (their father owns the storied Savile Row retailer Turnbull & Asser) and bending the rules for a new generation of gents. Despite their connections to British royalty (they've clothed the royal family, and their cousin was Dodi Fayed, the billionaire beau of Princess Diana), the Fayed brothers are striking out on their own by founding their own clothing line, Bespoken, and headquartering their operation in New York City.

There's a new shape of shade in town, and it has nothing to do with an aviator or wayfarer. The lenses are round, the bridge is double wire, and they come complete with a serious vintage vibe. Sunglasses are about more than just preventing harmful UV rays from messing with your vision. If you want to look good in the sun, check out these throwbacks.

Downton Abbey goes from throwback to flash-forward with a modern take on early 19th-century styling. Double-breasted suits, topcoats, top hats and robes in luxe fabrics like fur and velvet will make the English dandy properly attired again.

Prison Break

Military-precision-style haircuts are back in a big way. Not quite Kim Jong-un but severe nonetheless. Cropped tight at the side and with considerably more length up top, this look is currently being championed by Brad Pitt in preparation for World War II movie Fury, but we can expect to see it make waves soon enough.

This Ingenious Hoodie Could Save Homeless People's Lives

When Anders Hsi constructed a hoodie that zips up the front of a wearer’s face, he had in mind a person who values his privacy, like a passenger on an airplane.

But when a homeless man named Joe approached Hsi and was eager to try on the innovative sweatshirt, Hsi realized his product could take on an entirely new mission, Mashable reported.

visor hoodie

The Visor sweatshirt zips up the front of a person’s face, but doesn’t impede vision or obstruct the wearer’s hearing and is very breathable, according to the product’s Kickstarter page.

The reason it appealed to Joe, and will likely pique the interest of other homeless people, is that it allows the wearer to be in public, and remain somewhat inconspicuous.

"If I zip the sweatshirt up, it makes me feel more private," Joe told Mashable. "People tend to stare at you when you're sitting on the side of the street. It's nice having some privacy, you know? And it's warm."

visor hoodie

While the stares are invasive, it’s also the violence that so many homeless people are subjected to that’s the more pressing problem.

According to a recent study released by the National Coalition for the Homeless, attacks against homeless people jumped 23 percent last year as compared to 2012.

In 2013, there were a total of 108 reported attacks against the homeless, according to the study. Nineteen of those assaults resulted in death, Michael Stoops, director of community organizing, told HuffPost in March. The year before, there were 88 reported attacks, 18 of which resulted in death.

The organization found a direct correlation between the number of attacks against homeless people and the proliferation of anti-homelessness legislation.

Four of the 10 "meanest" cities were located in Florida and California, which are both notorious for their anti-homeless laws, according to the "Homes Not Handcuffs" report released by the National Coalition for the Homeless.

Joe told Mashable that he thinks the sweatshirt could potentially provide a level of protection, and deter police and passersby from approaching him in an aggressive way.

visor hoodie

Hsi is still fundraising on Kickstarter to get his product off the ground and wants to incorporate a giving back element that will help homeless people get access to the sweatshirts. For every 12 hoodies he sells, Hsi will give one away to a homeless person in in Albuquerque, New Mexico, where he’s still testing the product.

Hsi told HuffPost that since meeting Joe, he has given seven other homeless people a Visor hoodie in return for their feedback.

Falcon, a homeless man, suggested that he add on more secure pockets in the front and increase the size of the mesh panels to improve hearing. Cristina, a local homeless woman, said she appreciates how she can work on her beaded craftwork on the street while still covering her face.

As of Thursday, the company had raised more than $9,000 and has set a goal of collecting $15,000.

visor hoodie

Hsi said contributions will go toward purchasing fabrics and accessories, and paying production costs.

One of his main goals, though, is to offer homeless people elevated comfort and a sense of dignity.

"Our project treats people who are homeless differently," Hsi told HuffPost. "We are including them in value-creating activity, leveraging their unique experiences and hardships to create design and a product that is better for everyone."

In 'SHINE' Video, 10 Total Strangers Got Naked Together And Found Body Acceptance

"Making a commitment to be part of this was kind of terrifying."

That's what one woman in "SHINE," a short video from The Goddess Project, said of her decision to join 10 strangers for a photoshoot where participants wore nothing more than body paint and strategically-placed bark. The women also shared their thoughts on body love and acceptance, and how taking part in the video empowered them to back against societal norms of beauty in their everyday lives.

(The video above may be considered NSFW.)

Filmmakers Sara Landas and Holli Rae organized the shoot to celebrate all types of women's bodies. They told The Huffington Post in an email:
We were inspired to make "SHINE" to help women move past their limiting beliefs of what is beautiful and powerful. We have both personally experienced the damaging effects of trying to fit into society's body image mold and we believe that every "body" deserves to be seen and appreciated for their individual beauty, talent, and light. We hope that this film will inspire women to join together, overcome their fears, and see the power in fully embracing themselves and each other.

"We have to stick together and empower each other to overcome all of the stereotypes placed against us," one participant said. "No matter what we've been conditioned to believe, it's time to step up and recognize how beautiful we really are." We couldn't agree more -- even if fully clothed and in the comfort of our own office.

These Photos Make Us Fall In Love With 'The Notebook' All Over Again

Even 10 years after it was released, "The Notebook" still leaves audiences yearning for the kind of heart-wrenching, everlasting love Rachel McAdams and Ryan Gosling brought to life on the big screen.

Which is why, back in 2010, Quebec Couple Cindy and Jean-Nicola Barile chose to reenact famous scenes from the movie during their engagement shoot -- and the results are incredible.

The images, shot by Blushing Bride Studio, have once again gone viral thanks to the film's 10th anniversary on June 25 and frankly, we couldn't be happier. Any excuse to share these breathtaking shots is fine by us!

As for the couple, they married in September 2010 and have a two-year-old son. Now, without further ado...

Tinder Tutors Ease The Burden of Picking Out 6 Photos

$
0
0
When the matchmaking app Tinder first launched, everyone claimed it was the easiest, laziest way to date online. There were no quizzes, no essays, no personality tests. Even reading was optional.

But those people were wrong. Tinder is hard. You must upload not one but six (6) different (!) attractive photos. You must select one of those to be the main photo that strangers see and judge. And, because Tinder hasn't realized we now communicate in "yo's," you must think of witty sentences to send to other human beings. Tough. Love.

Michael Raven, the 24-year-old co-founder of a tech-focused public relations company, is an avid Tinder user who feels its online daters' pain. So last Thursday afternoon, while in the Ozone coffee shop in London's hip Shoreditch hood, he decided to launch a Tinder consulting service called TinderUs. Two hours later, TinderUs was live. For a $50 "beta" fee, the website will arrange a live Facebook chat with one of Raven's three 20-something friends, who can help pick your Tinder photos, craft your 500-character bio and refine your come-ons.

TinderUs is one of several Tinder coaching companies that promise to take the headache out of dating on an app that vows to take the headache out of dating. For the uninitiated, Tinder's premise is simple: Is the stranger you see in that photo attractive? Then swipe right ("like!"), and repeat ad infinitum. If you turn the person down, they'll never know it -- but if you like them and they "like" you back, the two of you may begin chatting.

tinder

It would seem that very little could go seriously wrong in six curated photos. And yet one week after TinderUs' launch, the Tinder-tutoring service had already booked 45 consultations and paid Raven's rent for the month. It's also acquired a well-worn tagline: "It's the Uber for Tinder," says Raven.

Like previous "gotcha" services that start as a prank, get outsized attention for an absurd premise and then attempt to become real startups, TinderUs began has a "half-joke" that Raven is now taking seriously. Whether anyone else will is another question.

TinderUs is essentially selling the unbiased opinion of another Tinder user. Raven boasts that his consultants are young, in fashion, on Tinder and, somewhat cryptically, "on trend." Look at it this way: Do you have a friend with good judgment? He can probably do the same thing for free.

Raven is not one of TinderUs' dating consultants, all of whom work in the fashion industry (this is a key selling point, Raven emphasizes). Rather, TinderUs' creator is a self-described "tech hustler" and "future tech evangelist" with a "growth hacker background" and an evident affinity for tech buzzwords. His TinderUs Twitter account is a barrage of tweets begging for coverage from almost any journalist who's mentioned TinderUs, Tinder or online dating, while his Twitter profile picture is the go-to headshot of the aspiring tech elite: Raven wearing Google Glass.

Though I haven't personally glimpsed the photo on his Tinder account, TinderUs dating expert Rhyanna Taylor says Raven was "doing it all wrong" before she intervened on a recent ride home from a networking event.

"He's in business and has a PR company, so he put that in there, which is good. As women, we’re attracted to confidence and success in the opposite sex," Taylor explains, offering a taste of the advice she gives to clients. But Raven's pictures focused too much on his social life, says Taylor. "He had a lot of 'night out' photos of him out. He also had a lot of pictures of him and other people for the main image. I was like, 'it has to be you.'"

Taylor's crash course helped inspire TinderUs, and Raven later recruited 21-year-old Taylor and two other friends for his fledgling service. TinderUs charges a $50 fee for each 30- to 60-minute tutorial, and half of that goes to the consultant providing their services.

Raven already imagines he might expand the scope of the Tinder consulting with a premium service that provides fashion advice. The experts could "give advice on clothing, or send links saying, 'You should get this shirt, it would match your style,'" said Raven, adding that TinderUs could take a cut from any sales.

In the past week, Taylor has advised about 23 singles -- half of them male, many of them from the United States and most of them in their mid-20s to early 30s. One client told her she had a nice name and tried to pick her up (she demurred). Some men have come to her hoping to engineer their profiles to "hook up with as many people as they can." But, she said, "I don't feel like I'm going against any of my morals in this work."

Taylor offered up a few cardinal Tinder sins that must be avoided at all costs: Don't make a group photo your main picture ("I've seen it before where someone will say 'yes,' then ask who your friend is and it's awful"). Don't upload too many selfies (instead, your photos should include "a selfie, a social situation, your hobby and interests"). Don't ever include an inspirational quote ("Half the time it looks awful"). Better yet, don't say anything on your profile at all, unless it's certifiably brilliant or you're deliberately trying to weed people out ("You have to list the traits that are important").

On her personal Tinder account, Taylor's main photo is a selfie, but she's left her bio blank. She's too busy juggling her job as a photo shoot coordinator to fill it out.

"I haven't had the time for these kinds of things," she said. "I can't be bothered anymore."

For a small fee, she can always hire someone to help her out.

La Toya Jackson Explains Reason Behind Michael's Controversial Parenting Practice (VIDEO)

$

After Michael Jackson's sudden death on June 25, 2009, the entire Jackson family rallied around his children, Prince, Paris and Blanket. The three young Jacksons went to live with their grandmother, Katherine, and had the support of their uncles and aunts.

Until Michael's death, the public didn't know much about his kids. The pop star had shielded Prince, Paris and Blanket from the public eye, always requiring them to wear masks when out with him. Now, however, the three are often in the media spotlight.

Middle Jackson sister La Toya attributes this shift to her mother's different parenting approach, telling Oprah during a sit-down for "Oprah: Where Are They Now?" that Katherine was not a fan of making the children wear masks.

"My mother took things differently in her hands. She says, 'I don't want to do that to them,'" La Toya explains.

Now that they're older, Prince, Paris and Blanket may not be interested in wearing masks out in public, but at the time, they didn't seem to mind, La Toya says. "When Michael used to get ready to go somewhere, he says, 'Okay, we're getting ready to go. Go get your masks,' and everybody would run and say, 'I'm going to wear this one today!'" La Toya tells Oprah.

Making the children wear masks seemed bizarre to many, but La Toya says there was a practical reason behind Michael's controversial parenting practice.

"He wanted them to have their freedom to do whatever they wanted to do, and people not know that they were related to him," she explains. "They would go out with the nanny all the time and no one knew who they were."

Also in the above video, La Toya shares her opinion on how Michael would feel today about the exposure his children have received.

La Toya Jackson appears on "Oprah: Where Are They Now?" this Sunday, June 22, at 9 p.m. ET on OWN.

23 Ways Humidity Is Making Your Life A Living Hell

$
0
0
Do you recall only a couple months ago when you were so sick of the cold weather? Well, Mother Nature finally listened to all your complaining and now she is gifting us with the pleasure of extreme heat and unbearable mugginess (also known as summer).

You should have been more careful about what you wished for. The sun is (mostly) great. Humidity is not. And judging from the way this summer is starting out, know you've got a lot of sticky, oppressively hot days ahead of you. So, get ready to sweat through these 23 uncomfortable situations all summer long, and welcome to humidity hell.

1. Humidity makes you toss and turn in your sleep until you just resort to this:

sleepingfridge

Not the most energy efficient solution, but at this point, who cares?

2. It turns your sheets into Saran Wrap.

They will stick to you like glue. Then you will strip them off, along with the rest of your clothes.

3. It makes you, for once, not care that your shower doesn't get hot water.

A cold shower offers you brief respite from the humidity. Just pretend that it's actually your choice.

4. Why should you put deodorant on when your pits are already sweating?
You can't stop the sweat. You can only hope to contain it.

5. Thanks to humidity, blow-drying your hair turns your bathroom into an Amazonian jungle.

And it takes three times as long because you absolutely refuse to use hot air.

6. It instantly turns your hair frizzy the second you walk outside.

Next time, you won't even bother with blowdrying your hair.

7. Humidity makes it virtually impossible to put on makeup.

A wet, sticky face is not the best palette for a smooth eyeliner glide.

8. It makes your office clothes feel like a heavy prison dragging your body down.

Your workplace has a pretty relaxed dress code, but unfortunately, showing up naked is not allowed.

9. Thanks to humidity, now you never want to sit down on the subway.

Because then you will have to peel your sweaty ass off the seat.

10. But even standing and trying to grasp your sweaty hand on the subway pole proves futile.
You can feel the sweat pooling in the cup of your hand, and now you look crazy as you constantly switch hands to get a firm grip.

11. Humidity gives you that back of the leg sweat.
Every time you walk, your leg sticks together at the knee.

12. And that scalp sweat.

You never knew your head could emit so much liquid.

13. Don't forget those armpit sweat stains.

These are just classic.

14. It gives you those chest sweat stains.

Sometimes you sweat so hard that your chest stain bleeds into your armpit stain.

15. Humidity introduces you to belt sweat stains.
You know, when there are those lines of sweat right below and above where your belt is cinching your skin.

16. It is sure to provide that stinging sensation in your eyes as the sweat drips into them.

200142939002

It burns!

17. And you can guarantee humidity will give you that strong taste as your sweat seeps into your mouth.

Tasty.

18. It makes sure that even if you walk very slowly, you'll still arrive somewhere with a fully sweat-drenched back.
This is a surefire guarantee.

19. It makes sure you cannot escape beads of sweat all over your face when you arrive at your destination.

Nope, you did not run here.

20. Effectively, humidity surrounds you with that sticky wet feeling that covers literally every single pore on your body at all times.
It's like another layer of skin. A sweaty, hot, wet one.

21. Humidity causes you to be a bit repetitive when you greet people.

"It's so hot outside!" is now always the first thing you say to anyone and everyone.

22. But at least it allows for that rejuvenating feeling of walking into air conditioning after being outside for, like, one minute.

Pure bliss.

23. And it gives you a new favorite pastime: Staring directly into the A/C or fan for a good ten minutes to cool off every time you get home from going anywhere.

Ahhhhhh. That's much better.

Your Guide To The Best (And Worst) Sleep Positions

Whether you're a side, back or stomach sleeper, chances are you feel pretty strongly about your preferred sleeping position.

Most Americans -- 74 percent, according to a 2012 survey conducted by home décor company Anna's Linens -- sleep on their sides, while 16 percent and 10 percent say they sleep on their stomachs and backs, respectively.

And while we can really only speculate about what our slumber styles say about our personality, sleep position has very real implications for sleep and overall health.

What Men Really Think About Women's Fashion Choices

Women and men have some pretty strong opinions about fashion trends like crop tops and maxi dresses, at least according to the folks at Ebay Deals.

500 women, 500 men and a group of 150 others (of mixed gendered people), played word associations with various items of clothing. Turns out, 71 percent of both women and men expressed an affinity for yoga pants. But, the reasonings behind this shared attraction came from predictably different places.

While the ladies described the bundles of spandex as "comfy," "relaxing" and "casual," the fellas came up with terms like "sexy," "tight" and "nice." Of course, it doesn't actually matter what each gender thinks about each other's style, because when it comes down to it, we wear what we want.

There's Now BB Cream For Nails

There are anti-aging treatments on the market for your face, neck, hands and feet, and now a new beauty product is here to focus on your nails.

Orly has created the first blemish balm, a.k.a. BB cream, for nails. Acting like the tinted moisturizer we use for our faces, this polish protects against future breakage by strengthening and moisturizing brittle nails. Although it seems like this product would be a great base coat, Orly recommends to avoid using the BB cream in conjunction with any other polishes.

Orly BB Crème is just the latest example of products that are giving manicures the special, healthy treatment. Last month, Alexa Chung became the spokesperson for NailKale, a polish that uses kale in its formula.

We can't wait to see how Orly's BB Crème Treatment will take off -- but tell us what you think.

Flip Flops That Are Stylish Enough For Almost Any Occasion

Saturday, June 21 marks the first day of summer, so it totally makes sense that today (Friday) is National Flip Flop Day. After all, we need a day to prepare to get our feet prepped to be on display all summer.

There are few shoe options that make you feel as footloose and fancy free as flip flops. We love their casual nature, but thong sandals have gotten a bad reputation over the years for being inappropriate for most places or occasions.

To be sure, there are places one should avoid wearing flip flops -- including funerals, corporate offices or meeting the president, to name a few -- but there are also plenty of situations where they totally work if you're rocking the right pair.

With that said, we've rounded up some chic flip flop options that you can slip on for the beach or a night out on the town.

These ladies should have opted for a pair of flip flops!

Kate Middleton Surprises Kids At Hospice, Confirms She's A Class Act

When the cameras aren’t around, Kate Middleton pretty much does the same thing as when the press is hawking her: Helps to make the world a better place.

Earlier this month, the duchess of Cambridge made a surprise visit to the Treehouse, a hospice in Suffolk, England, that offers 24/7 care for kids with life-threatening diseases, Today.com reported.

kate middleton

Middleton coincided her visit with Children’s Hospice Week, which was observed June 13 to June 20. The goal of the awareness event is to educate the public on the amount of resources that are required to properly care for a child with a terminal illness and to collect funds for the organizations that support children and families in need of such care.

Since 2012, Middleton has served as royal patron for East Angelica Children’s Hospices (EACH), which runs the Treehouse along with two other hospice centers.

kate middleton

The duchess used the visit as an opportunity to learn more about the services hospices offer and the critical roles volunteers and support staff play.

"Around the clock support is crucial for children receiving palliative care. They and their families often need help every hour of every day, both in hospices and at home," Middleton said in a statement. "As patron of EACH, I have seen firsthand this remarkable and varied work and just how vital the support of staff and volunteers can be to the families of children with life-limiting conditions. It has been wonderful to see the fantastic public support for Children's Hospice Week over the last few days. Please continue supporting your local children's hospice in whatever way you can."

Olalla Oliveros, Spanish Model, Quit Career To Become A Nun

Olalla Oliveros, a well-known Spanish model and actress, has drastically changed her look. In the midst of a thriving career, the beauty from Galicia has donned blue sackcloth and a veil and joined the semi-cloistered Order of Saint Michael as a nun.

olalla

Oliveros cites a visit to a shrine, The Sanctuary of Our Lady of Fátima in Portugal, as the event that sparked her big decision. Though reluctant to talk too much about herself, Oliveros told El Diaro de Carlos Paz that she was increasingly unhappy despite her worldly success and felt an "internal earthquake" caused by her trip to the shrine.

Later, she couldn't shake the image from her mind as herself dressed as a nun, which she initially found "absurd," according to the National Catholic Register. After consulting with a priest in Madrid, she realized that God was calling her.

"The Lord is never wrong. He asked if I will follow him, and I could not refuse," Oliveros said, according to NCR.

Her agent, Mirella Melero, stressed that Oliveros' choice was due to a flagging career. On the contrary, Oliveros had just won a movie role, reports El Diaro. Though Oliveros entered into the order four years ago, she only recently decided to open up about her decision. Formerly represented by Agencia Plan B in Spain, she is now known as Sister Olalla del Sí de María.

Oliveros isn't the only former model to find a new life as a nun. In 2005, Sister Amada Rosa Pérez left her life as a top Colombian model to work with a Marian religious community. "I want to be a model that promotes the true dignity of women and not their being used for commercial purposes,” she told El Tiempo in 2010.

Never Wear Spandex on Your Bike Again

Before we get started, I disclaim: I was wearing tights under my dress. Fluorescent pink tights.

I don't care what you thought you saw as I rode my motorcycle down Pearl Street. You didn't see it.

And yes, those were gold ballet flats, and although they don't provide much ankle support, I was still wearing a helmet.

Plus, I changed into my Docs before I got on U.S. 36. (But I fear the pink leggings may have contributed to some looky-loo traffic congestion.)

I'm sorry. Now get used to it. This is a movement.

For fashion freaks, riding a two-wheeled single-person alternative vehicle -- a bike, scooter, motorcycle or cruiser -- seems like quite the quandary. You don't want to ride during the blizzardly pants-and-boots months. Then it warms up, and you want to wear dresses and peep-toes.

But the American cycling industry insists you cannot dress adorably and simultaneously sit on a bike. In fact, people are incapable of pedaling unless they are wearing flesh-sucking fabrics that end with an "x" (Spandex, Coolmax, Goretex), which would make even the marble statue of David look jiggly.

In fact, the League of American Bicyclists lists five materials under the "clothing" section of their webpage: the triple-x fabrics and wool and nylon.

That's it.

No cute cotton dresses, satin bows, no patent leather flats or jersey stripes. Just the five most uncomfortable fabrics ever made.

Adding visual insult to this travesty, said fabrics shall only be produced in unflattering colors, such as radioactive green, radiation yellow and nuclear fission blue.

Heck, while we're at it, let's billboard the entire uniform in brand names to make the cyclist look like a sell-out, too.

No more! (Exclamation point necessary to accompany me jumping from my desk with my manicured fist in the air.)

This June, in honor of the annual Walk and Bike Month, I want to redefine the concept of cycling. Let's take bicycles back from the recreational hobbyists who have fooled skirt-wearers into thinking that a lightweight frame is somehow more important than how your basket is decorated. (As if.)

Boulder's Cruisers get this concept, but only on Thursdays when they meet for their costumed rides throughout town.

But what about the day-to-day folks who feel jailed inside their stuffy, gas-guzzling cars because they don't realize that hundreds of thousands of people across the world do not buy into the American Spandex myth?

Don't believe me? Believe Copenhagen. Yes, the entire Danish city, and the nucleus of the Cycle Chic movement, which has swept Europe and is now gracing New York and increasingly more U.S. cities.

Cycle Chic is about riding slowly and stylishly; enjoying the fresh air and not trying to race the Hummer to the stoplight. From the Cycle Chic manifesto: "I will ride with grace, elegance and dignity."

I can see the quintessential Parisian cyclist, in a flowy black dress (Europeans always wear black, you know), strappy sandals and an oversized sunhat, accented with a flower that matches the flowers on her basket. There is no secret cult of car drivers bashing her on anonymous online forums. She rides the bicycle as it was meant to be ridden.

According to Copenhagencyclechic.com, bicycles helped liberate the working class -- especially women -- at the end of the 19th century. "The bicycle was relegated to being merely a toy or piece of sports equipment," the website says.

Choosing style over speed means no cyclists darting in and out of traffic like little drunken Lance Armstrongs. It means no armpit sweat soiling your clothes, and thereby eliminating the argument for the x-fabrics that "wick away moisture." A leisurely pace also cuts back on the number of Marilyn Monroe skirt flashes, although simple leggings underneath also do the trick.

Spandex advocates argue that a skirt can catch in the spokes. So make a do-it-yourself skirt guard.

And on those days when your outfit calls for stilettos, toss them in a gorgeous basket, such as a black basket designed to look like lace ($60 by Marie-Louise Gustafsson).

Or if you're on a bike with an engine, Willie and Max makes saddlebags in pink, purple, burgundy, red and white. Just be smart, in both the American and British definition of the word.

Hardcore Cycle Chic-kens might frown on me for lumping motorcycles in with their cruisers and Schwinns. But I, too, understand the joy of riding slowly and stylishly.

And my quads could never propel me the 50 miles a day I ride to and from work.

My bike's name is Cerise -- French, of course, meaning cherry red. I call Cerise my "moving meditation," with no distractions, no radio, no cell phones or passengers or coffee cups balancing on the console.

Just me, Cerise and my skirt.

And my pink tights. Which, now that I think about it, happen to be Spandex-y. And radioactive pink.

Summer is the season for bright colors, patterns, florals and the occasional neon print. Here in the city when the temperatures rise and the humidity is almost unbearable, we tend to stray away from darker tones -- especially black. The goal is to perspire, ahem, glisten, as little as possible right?

Well, think again. As we were lurking on Instagram this week, we found almost nothing but black. From Birkenstocks to neck scarves, we're here to remind you that black will never go out of style, and that it is totally acceptable to wear during the warm-weather months.
