Emerging Houston Lifestyle Brand: J. Landa

0
0
Jewelry designer and store owner J. Landa harnesses his passions for style, travel, art, culture, religions and history to create and curate jewelry collections tailored to his valued customers.

Growing up in the jewelry business, he was exposed at an early age to both the design and business sides of the industry, and has added to his knowledge over the years by working hand-in hand with other artisans and by traveling the world in search of beauty and meaning that can be translated into wearable art.

He doesn't follow trends, but he does design multiple collections as seasons and colors change and new materials become available. "Each of my pieces represents what I'm feeling at the time and tells a story," says J, "and I'm lucky to have found a niche that can capture all that."

A Booming Economy in America's Most Diverse City Leads J. Silver to re-emerge as a Global, Sophisticated Fashion Destination -- With a New Name and an Emerging Designers' Laboratory.

After 15 years of serving fashionable Houstonians and city visitors with top designers, exclusive collections, and unmatched customer service, the popular J. Silver jewelry store on Rice Boulevard is now J. Landa, reflecting the owner's personal vision for a true lifestyle brand.

It's not just a completely renovated store with new designers and an elevated architectural space - it's a new level of dedication to expertise in service and personal styling. "Our customers -- who are from all around the world -- will feel like they are buying from trusted experts who know the latest trends and who can put together individualized styles. We have a very chic, professional and well traveled clientele and my new store will exceed their expectations," says owner and designer J. Landa.

To fulfill his design vision, Landa entrusted long-time collaborator Dennis Brackeen of Brackeen Design Group, who also re-decorated Landa's Southampton house. "When Jay approached me about taking on the project, my wheels immediately began spinning," says Brackeen. "I wanted the new space to evoke a mix of styles and emotions. The new design is very much like the jewelry that it showcases: exotic materials, interesting finishes and rich, vibrant colors." It's also a reflection of the owner himself. "It's everything I like; it's the way I like to live," Landa explains "I always say that if you can't live the lifestyle, you can't sell it. Now we can!"

Individualized customer service has always been in the store's DNA, but this new incarnation takes it to another level. "We're not about just shopping for pieces, but feeling great about the overall experience. We will offer an environment that is curated with exclusive merchandise -- many from favorites Chan Luu, Alexis Bittar, Dian Malouf and Spanish sensation Uno de 50 - as well as J. Landa designs, that customers will not be able to find anywhere else," says Landa. Merchandise will remain at accessible price points, as well.

A feature of the new store will be an emerging designers lab to foster talent and build new artists' careers. "Houston has been very good to me, and my customers have helped me grow as a designer with their feedback, ideas and encouragement. Now we can help develop that next generation of designers by showcasing their products in-store," says Landa.

"Houston is now the most diverse city in America, and maybe the world," says Landa. "It was time to create an environment that not only showcases that diversity but delivers it to a global clientele."

Beauty is Earned

Sometimes wisdom can come from the most unlikely of places.

I've been in the beauty industry for my entire career, on the brand marketing side. Although I've worked in the space across almost every category, each new brand is a unique challenge; it's why I love the beauty business so much. I've recently been working on a brand new product, having great fun meeting new people in the process. This one is so different than any other I've worked on; such a great experience!

The beauty industry is a tough one, though, I must say. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and there's no fountain of youth that's for sure. What one product will do for one person might not do anything for another. It's all in how you look at it, and your own perceptions of beauty.

In the course of what might have otherwise been idle chit-chat the other day, a fashion stylist I know made a very profound statement. At the time, I silently said "whoa," putting it on backburner to process later. It was that profound, at least in the context of beauty and fashion products.

Since it was directed to me, I wasn't quite sure if this was a compliment, a novel way of thinking, or an unintentional dig. As I've thought about it more, though, I'm realizing it is just a different take on reality ... coming from someone who's job it is to make people look (what some might say) unrealistically beautiful.

"Beauty is a gift for the young, but as you get older you have to earn your beauty."

Did I just get called "old?" Do I have to try that hard to look good now that I'm older? Are my days in the sun over already?

As I've reflected back on it, none of that was intended at all. It was a snap of reality that as we age, beauty gets harder and harder to obtain and maintain.

We have to watch what we eat and drink more intensely, if we are still going to fit into those same pair of jeans. We need to be more conscious of our hairstyles to keep our faces framed in the best possible light. For some of us we need to do a little more waxing than we used to! Makeup needs to be more consciously and discretely applied to accentuate the positives. And those lines on our face can in fact add character, if we embrace them.

We have to earn our beauty, but it's not just about superficial looks. As we age, our experiences and our outlook make us more and more attractive, but not in a youthful way any more. We become more interesting and more fascinating with more texture as we age ... which makes us more beautiful in the process.

We have to earn our beauty. I'll take it as a compliment, and a way of life.

Summer 2014 Beauty Trends

0

While spring and fall traditionally usher in the new trends for fashion and beauty, summer may be my favorite season for experimenting with makeup. The fashion is brighter, the weather is warmer and the sense of anticipation and adventure is rife. Whether you're getting glam for cocktail hour at a rooftop lounge in Manhattan, partying poolside in LA or basking in the natural beauty of the Outer Banks, I recommend shaking up your makeup routine with that same sense of adventure. Here are my ideas on how to make summer 2014 your most beautiful yet.

New York
With three short months to squeeze in trips to the beach, outdoor concerts and festivals and visits to your fave al fresco hangouts, summer in New York calls for makeup that lasts and lets you change up your look in a flash. For a finish that doesn't quit until you do, make sure to prime your skin before applying a stitch of makeup. Try keeping your primer in the fridge for a cooling wake-up call before a steamy commute. Keep skin fresh throughout the day by spritzing on my Boudoir Mist Spray Foundation rather than patting on powder, which can easily cake in hot, humid weather. Women in New York love a bold lip, but maintaining the look can require more maintenance than usual on sticky summer days. For a fresh take on color try a vibrant waterproof liner like my new Two-Faced Eyeliner Duos. A bold swipe of emerald or turquoise is an instant update and the formula won't budge.

2014-06-23-greenliner.jpg

Pair emerald liner with fresh skin for maximum impact

Los Angeles
A golden glow remains a summer must-have in LA, but even the most devoted sun goddesses know that faking it is a requirement for aging gracefully and avoiding harmful rays. While you may have mastered the art of bronzing ages ago, keep in mind that the color you wear can also enhance a tan and keep it from looking flat (and fake). I created a sultry look for model Jessica Hart for the cover of Australian Harper's Bazaar and anyone can wear it. I love a bold orange lip and it's easy to pull off in a universally flattering shade like my DéVine Goddess Lipstick in Hara. Pair with your favorite shades for a modern take on Hollywood glamour that's perfect poolside. Add a flush of blush that combines bronze and coral hues for a gorgeous, multidimensional glow. When sunny days turn into sultry nights add a fabulous faux lash for a smudge-free alternative to mascara. Fluttery will get you everywhere!

Outer Banks
The beaches of North Carolina deliver a combination of natural beauty and southern charm that makes for the ultimate relaxing summer sojourn. Channel your inner southern belle with a classic, refined beauty statement worthy of Scarlett O' Hara. Her iconic look still inspires local beauties to embrace a well-groomed brow and impeccable red lip year-round. I adore this look and the laid-back pace of a North Carolina summer makes it well worth devoting a few extra minutes to achieve. If you haven't been blessed with the perfect arches of Vivien Lee, try my new Browtox to add color and definition. For a rouge pout with staying power, it's essential to prep the lips before applying color. I always apply foundation or concealer over the lips before I apply color to even out and neutralize the color of your natural pigment and create an even texture for color to adhere to, making for a cleaner lip finish. Always apply lip liner last to perfect the shape of the lips and keep color in place without creating a harsh line.

From the city to the shore, summer is the ideal time to experiment with a fresh take on your go-to look.

June Ambrose Throws Her Daughter The Birthday Party Of Our Little Girl Dreams (PHOTOS)

Chances are your 10th birthday party wasn't held at a designer boutique and didn't include customized Converse sneakers, gourmet pastries and a handful of celebrity kids as guests. But then again you're not Summer Chamblin, the adorable daughter of celebrity stylist June Ambrose.

Between dressing her star-studded clientele, Ambrose teamed up with event designer John Goodman to bring her daughter's "High Tea Soirée" to life.

Summer, a budding fashionista who is often spotted front row with her mom during New York Fashion Week, was joined by approximately 45 of her friends for the fun-filled day -- including Alicia Keys and Swizz Beatz's kids, as well as NBA baller Amare Stoudemire and his wife Alexis' little ones. The shindig started off at the luxury children's clothing store Bonpoint in Soho, New York, where the partygoers got to customized their own pair of Converse sneakers and enjoyed face paining by INGLOT Cosmetics, all while jamming out to tunes by DJ Tyger Lily.

The festivities then moved next door to the high-end pastry shop Laduree where specialty sweets and a three-tiered Marie Antoinette-themed cake awaited the kids. Oooo la la!

And what's a kiddie party without a goodie bag? But yet again, these weren't your run-of-the-mill favors -- each of Summer's chums took home canvas "designer" totes by My Other Bag that were filled with everything from Miu Miu Doll T-shirts, Carol's Daughter products, EOS lip balms, Rocawear threads, a custom candle titled “The Summer Socialite" by Walton Home NY, and the list goes on!

Fired American Apparel CEO Vows To 'Vigorously' Fight For His Job

Ousted American Apparel chief executive Dov Charney is not going down without a fight.

A filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission on Monday said that Charney plans to dispute the board's decision to fire him, and that the executive has support from some shareholders to regain his spot at the helm of American Apparel.

Last week, Charney was booted from his positions as CEO and chairman by the company's board, which claimed he violated his fiduciary obligations to American Apparel.

In a termination letter published by BuzzFeed on Sunday, the board cited violations of the company's sexual harassment policies and the misuse of corporate funds as additional reasons for Charney's dismissal. The executive has faced numerous lawsuits from former employees accusing him of harassment, and he has a longstanding reputation for salacious behavior.

Charney wholeheartedly disagrees with the board's assessment.

"Mr. Charney believes that such termination is without merit and intends to contest it vigorously," Monday's filing says.

In a letter sent June 19, Charney's attorney Patricia Glaser gave the board until Monday to meet with the ousted CEO to talk about his reinstatement. If Charney is not allowed back at the helm of the casual clothing retailer he founded, he will pursue legal action, Glaser warned.

With a 27.2 percent stake in American Apparel, Charney has essentially adopted the role of an activist investor. He plans to get involved in "matters related to governance and board composition, management, operations, business, assets, capitalization, financial condition, strategic plans and the future [of American Apparel]," according to the SEC filing.

He has no plans to sell his shares, according to a report from The Wall Street Journal. The filing claims that some American Apparel shareholders have told Charney they want him back.

American Apparel has brought on investment firm Peter J. Solomon for aid while it deals with the boardroom battle. John Luttrell, the interim CEO of American Apparel, said in a release that the move was needed to "ensure that we have adequate access to capital in the future at a reasonable cost."

"We believe the hiring of a financial and strategic advisor at this important juncture is in the best interest of our stockholders," said Luttrell.

Beauty Routines That Can Cause More Harm Than Good

0
0
When the warm weather hits, so do the summer fashion and beauty trends. Products everywhere want to help people exaggerate the effects of summer on their bodies. Everything from lighter hair, tanner skin and long mermaid locks are longed for and created with products from the stores.

While you may like the way these summer beauty rituals look on you, they may be more damaging to your body than you realize. Here are just a few warm-weather fads that can cause more harm than good. They just might not be worth the consequences.

Tanning Oil: Even though you may want to be tan and sport that summer glow, it's important to put your long-term goals ahead of your short-term goals when it comes to the health and upkeep of your skin. While the actual oil doesn't harm skin, the extended exposure from the sun that it promotes can cause a great deal of harm.

Tanning oil and sunscreen below an SPF of 15 don't block enough of the sun's harmful UV rays to protect your skin and will allow the sun to cause damage. The popular Banana Boat sunscreen with SPF 4 only blocks about 75percent of UVB rays while SPF 30 blocks 97 percent of the rays. Protecting yourself from the sun's UV rays will benefit not only your health, but your appearance as well.

In fact, many of the wrinkles, skin thinning and overall "leathery" look of skin that are often associated with old age are actually due to extended periods of time under the sun without protection. Even more importantly, protecting your skin from the sun can help prevent skin cancer.

Tanning Beds: While tanning beds may seem like a quick, easy fix for pale skin, their consequences may not be worth the tan. According to Livestrong.com, women who use tanning beds more than once a month are over 50 percent more likely to get melanoma. Melanoma is the most dangerous and deadly form of skin cancer.

In the past, tanning beds were often advertised as a safe way to tan, but cancer research has discovered a strong link between tanning beds and melanoma, especially for young users. The younger you are when you start using tanning beds, the higher your lifetime exposure to dangerous UV rays becomes.

Sun-In Hair Lightening Product: While Sun-In seems like an inexpensive, easy way to add light, golden highlights to your beach waves, it can actually be pretty unhealthy for your hair. Sun-In contains a mixture of chemicals in its bottle that work to lighten hair. The product can dry out hair and weaken it, causing strands to break more easily or even fall out.

The effects can worsen if Sun-In is combined with the use of straighteners or high-settings on hair dryers. Sun-In can also increase the number of pesky split ends that show up. Sun-In is not recommended for people with darker hair. It can make the hair look discolored or give it an orange-colored tint rather than the desired effect of natural highlights.

Bleaching Your Teeth: Our teeth aren't naturally a dazzling white color, yet many of us try to bleach our teeth to get that effect. Even though it is a common practice and it doesn't seem like it would be harmful, teeth whitening can actually have negative effects on your pearly whites.

Hydrogen peroxide is used in most teeth whitening products, both those that are used in professional offices and at home. This can cause changes to tooth enamel, making it weaker, and increase sensitivity. In addition, while the teeth whitening will not be permanent, the harmful effect on your teeth will be. The more you use teeth whitening products, the more obvious the effects will be.

Unfortunately, the demand and popularity of teeth whitening and bleaching products is increasing among both men and women. This is due to the promotion of the "need" to have model-like white teeth and because of the stains that food and drinks like tea, coffee and wine can cause.

Lash Extensions: At first, eyelash extensions seem like a miracle product. Something to visually thicken and lengthen your actual lashes that doesn't have to be applied daily? But the reality isn't as perfect as it sounds.

The lashes have to be individually applied using a semi-permanent glue. Then, touch-ups are recommended every three to four weeks. Wearing the eyelash extensions for long periods of time allows for the possibility of damage and hair loss for your natural eyelashes, especially if the extensions were not applied properly. You could also be more prone to irritation or infection due to the glue or bacteria that your extensions can catch.

So the next time you plan on starting one of these beauty rituals, consider the consequences and weigh them with the benefits. The short-term effects that the products and routines will have on your looks may not be worth the long-term penalties.

These Student Designers Just Made Toilet Paper Fashionable

While they may not be old enough to compete in "Project Runway," one group of fashion designers are seriously giving the contestants on the show a run for their money.

According to NJ.com, each year, Bayonne High School teacher Irene Pyke hosts a Toilet Paper Creation Contest where she challenges her fashion marketing students to make a dress out of -- you've guessed it -- toilet paper.

Budding designers used the fragile material to construct impressive garments, ranging from detailed cocktail gowns to party dresses. This year, three winners were chosen out of roughly 100 designs.

Scroll down to see a photo of one of this year's winning dresses.

"They're very creative," the New Jersey teacher told the site, who came up with the idea for the contest after reading about a New York City couple getting married at a public toilet. "Each year the designs are getting better and better."

If Adam Levine Wasn't Confident About Proposing, God Help The Rest Of Us

Get this: reigning "Sexiest Man Alive" Adam Levine (a guy who surely isn't lacking in self-esteem) said he wasn't feeling particularly confident when he popped the question to model Behati Prinsloo last year.

The Maroon 5 frontman and "Voice" judge stopped by "Live! With Kelly & Michael" on Monday to talk about what was going through his mind during the proposal.

“It doesn’t matter how certain you think you are,” he told host Michael Strahan and guest host Beth Behrs. “You still get down on that knee, and you get woozy, and you’re like, ‘I’m doing this, oh my god.’ You can’t be confident about it. I’m a confident person, but I got on that knee and everything changed immediately. I lost my equilibrium. I had to get on the other one.”

Levine also admitted that he wasn't feeling particularly suave when he finally mustered up the courage to ask.

“I had nothing,” he said. “I usually have some charming thing to say. I remember one thing about it. I did say at one point, ‘Both knees! Look, I got on both knees!’ And it didn’t sound charming at all.”

Last week on Ryan Seacrest's radio show, Levine said that he went the gentlemanly route and asked Prinsloo's dad for his blessing before proposing.

"I did ask his permission," he said. "I don’t want to talk about it, you know how I am, but yes, of course I did. I had to. And it was extremely nerve-wracking."

Alyssa Milano isn't letting her pregnancy get in the way of her chic style, even if she's just picking up some groceries.

The 41-year-old was spotted in Los Angeles on June 23 rocking a clingy blue dress, a sleeveless beige cardigan, and strappy stilettos. Perhaps Milano's favorite accessory was the bag of Pasta Chips she was seen snacking on:

Anne Hathaway is making us do a double take.

The Academy Award-winning actress, who has sported a notable pixie cut since her turn as Fantine in the 2012 movie-musical "Les Miserables," was seen donning a shoulder-length wig on Tuesday, June 24, while filming a scene for her upcoming role in "The Intern."

Woman Says She Found 'Cry For Help' Hand-Stitched On Tag Of Her New Dress

0
0
When Rebecca Gallagher purchased a new floral-print dress, she says she was shocked to discover a cry for help on the garment’s tag.

“Forced to work exhausting hours,” the hand-stitched label in the dress reportedly read. Gallagher told the South Wales Evening Post that she purchased the dress at a Primark store in Wales. It's unclear where the message originated. In a statement on its website, the European clothing retailer notes the dress has not been available for sale since 2013.

The Post reports that Gallagher, 25, refuses to wear the dress, and is convinced the message is a "cry for help."

“To be honest I’ve never really thought much about how the clothes are made, but this really made me think about how we get our cheap fashion,” she told the outlet. “I dread to think that my summer top may be made by some exhausted person toiling away for hours in some sweatshop abroad.”

On Monday, Primark emailed The Huffington Post the following statement:
We find it very strange that this has come to light so recently, given that the dress was on sale more than a year ago, with no other incidents of this kind relating to this dress. We would be grateful if the customer would give us the dress, so we can investigate how the additional label became attached and whether there are issues which need to be looked into.

Primark’s Code of Conduct sets out the core principles that suppliers and factories must follow to ensure products are made in good working conditions, and that the people making them are treated decently and paid a fair wage. We inspect each factory to ensure it is meeting the Code and support it by providing guidance and training when issues are identified. Primark is a member of the Ethical Trading Initiative (ETI), and our code is based on the ETI base code.

Earlier this year Primark’s overseas factories made headlines when a building in Bangladesh collapsed, killing more than 1,100 garment workers, some of whom made clothes for Primark. The company agreed to pay a total of $12 million in compensation to the workers and their families, according to The Guardian.

From the Sheets to the Streets: Sleepwear-Inspired Clothes

Every now and then, we all have one of those mornings when it's extra-impossible to get out of bed -- let alone put together a look. Luckily, the sleepwear-inspired trend was made just for mornings like these.

Pajama-inspired clothes may conjure up a full silk button-up shirt and pants ensemble designers send down the runway every now and then. Or you might picture a corset and sheer robe combo that only Rihanna could rock outside the boudoir. Au contraire. Here are some sleeper pieces that are perfect for lazy brunches, midweek hangovers -- even casual days at the office. That whole getting-out-of-bed thing just got a whole lot easier.

1. TOPSHOP has sweet cami-and-shorts sets that would look right at home at a summer music festival or urban street fair. Try pairing the top with tailored slacks for a cute work outfit.

Cat Print PJ Shorts and Shirt, $50, Right: Alien Tee and Shorts PJ Set, $40

2. Always-accessible ZARA has a lot of great sweat/jogger pants that -- when styled the right way -- look just as snazzy in the boardroom as they do in the bedroom. These zippered jogging pants would pair well with bomb stiletto heels.

Above: Jogging Pants with Zips, $79.90

3. Wildfox's dreamy room-service fantasy lookbook (below, left) dropped last year and won many stylists over. But items like this fleur de lis printed set (below, right) is what keeps them coming back for more. This would look wild with a black or tan slim midi skirt and blazer.

4. The T by Alexander Wang line has some amazing french terry, cotton, and spandex basics that would look just as good in yoga class as they do on the dance floor. For the leather detailing alone, though, these sweatpants (below, left) are an obvious top pick.

5. Kimonos as a summer beach/pool cover up are a necessity, and Nasty Gal is the go-to spot to snag one of these glorified bathrobes. Want some advice? Keep it (relatively) short and skip the fringe. You've got a new super-stylish way to keep from getting sunburnt -- or even a little defense against that too-chilly office A/C. Dress code? What dress code?

The Class of 2014

2014-06-24-14340059725_f0175ef924_b.jpgCongratulations to all the 2014 graduates across the country! We have had many high school and college grads visit the Salon over the last few weeks for pre-commencement blow outs and updos. Many have been with us since they were very young and we are so proud of all of them!

Earlier this month we also had the pleasure of treating the ladies of this year's LaGuardia Community College President's Society to an afternoon of beauty here in the Salon before their year end gala! The President's Society is designed to enhance the cultural and professional experiences for a select group of high achieving students, beyond the standard academic rigor of their daily curriculum. Focusing on Career Planning, Communication & Comportment, Cultural Appreciation, and Community Service & Leadership, the program aims to increase their preparedness and confidence in their transition from Community College to higher education or careers.

2014-06-24-14153569257_60c7642edb_b.jpgOur involvement for the past two years was made possible by one of our esteemed clients and a longtime resident of The Carlyle. She has dedicated so much to this group of young men and women : from taking them to them to the opera, providing them with crucial networking skills, to treating them to their celebratory gala dinner. The gala, held this year at the landmark Gustavino's, provides members with an opportunity to meet community leaders, entrepreneurs, and potential mentors.

It was such an honor to be able to spend time with these remarkable young women. Their ambitions are truly inspiring. And their goals for the near future - from studies in the arts, to tech internships - prove that they will one day be the mentors that future President's Society members look to for leadership. When we saw them all leaving - beautifully coiffed, made up and dressed for their event it clearly demonstrated to us all just how truly transformational our work here in the Salon can be. We not only beautify our clients but fill them with a true sense of self confidence - how wonderfully gratifying that is for us all!!

This DIY Surf Spray Is Totally Going to Save Your Summer Hair

2014-06-24-35A1481.jpg

Fess up: Come summertime, your hairstyling routine takes a turn for the simple and uncomplicated. 80-degrees is officially too hot for blow-drying and heat-styling, and besides, that's just time wasted indoors when you could be outside enjoying the weather!

One of our favorite ways to add texture and movement to our hair just happens to be one of our favorite warm-weather activities: jumping into the ocean. Unfortunately, since we live in Pennsylvania, the deep blue sea isn't exactly sitting in our backyards, so we do the next best thing: douse our hair in homemade surf spray.

While there are plenty of similar products available on the drugstore shelf, whipping up a batch of surf spray is cheap and -- surprisingly -- super simple. And while the ocean may dry your strands and make them brittle, the addition of coconut oil in an at-home spray adds a healthy dose of moisture to counteract the salt's drying effects.
