Tattoo Artist Brings Dots And Lines To New Heights In Stunning Geometric Ink Designs

Imagine this scene:

Sharp waves stretch back for as far as you can see, eating up the horizon in a vast display of stunning movement. Like the peaks and troughs of a chaotic line graph, the seas capture jumping fish as they weave in and out of the thrashes. Careful shading separates the animal bodies as they surface, drenched in the bleeding red pigment of a sunset-flooded landscape.

The description might sound like a recounting of an ancient Japanese print or a sprawling painted canvas, but the words are actually attached to artwork of a different sort. They tell the story of artist Chaim Machlev and his gorgeous tattoos.

Machlev's inked masterpieces would seem at home amidst the fractal imaginings of digital artists or the mind-bending creations of the op art world. Crafting arm's length swirls and chest-sized 3D globes, his tattoos throw traditional rosebuds and nautical anchors to the wind. Forget calligraphic text and tribal bands, Machlev pines for geometric wonders that destroy dimension and trick the eye.

Machlev's studio goes by the name "Dots to Lines," and though it's based in Berlin, Germany, his tattoos have been shown across the web, thanks in part to his stunning Instagram account. Here's Just How Much It Pays To Be Conventionally Attractive

We've come to expect impossible, even improbable standards of beauty to populate our magazines and our television shows. It's another thing entirely to find they've invaded our workplace.

But as a new video from Vox reveals, there are real, measurable economic benefits to being considered "conventionally attractive," and we're all affected.

Heavier women earn less. Taller people earn more. With how much symmetrical faces are rewarded among professional quarterbacks, one would think it directly affects how far they can throw the ball.

Overall, beautiful people are seen as more competent, kind and trustworthy, according to the video. Unless it's an attractive woman -- then, she might have a distinct disadvantage if applying for a "masculine" type job.

Over time, these taxes on our supposed imperfections add up, with a lifetime pay gap of $230,000 separating the "attractive" and "unattractive."

The effects are so pronounced, we're starting to wonder the going rate for each aesthetic advantage. An extra 10 cents an hour for skillfully plucked eyebrows, 15 percent pay cut for few extra pounds?

As Vox aptly notes -- is it any wonder the beauty industry has ballooned into a $160 billion business? "We're just responding to our economic incentives," the video says.

Prince George's Birthday Portrait Is As Adorable As You'd Expect

It's his party and he'll walk if he wants to.

That's what we can only imagine Prince George is thinking in this most recent portrait, released by the palace in honor of his upcoming first birthday on July 22.

The little prince is looking as fashionable as ever (he is the most stylish celebrity baby, after all) in a pair of Petit-Bateau overalls, a blue collared shirt and Early Days Alex Pre-Walker shoes.

Although we have to say Prince George looks a bit more advanced than "pre-walker." Perhaps it's because the Brits refer to this captured moment as the one-year-old's "royal walkabout."

Check out the adorable photo below while we use this entire week as an excuse to celebrate his birthday.

Kanye West Clears Up Wedding Rumors And Gives Some Amazing Quotes To GQ

Kanye West often has a lot of to say, and he certainly didn't disappoint for his latest interview with GQ magazine.

Nothing was off limits, as the 37-year-old rapper cleared up rumors surrounding what actually went down at his wedding and explained why he and new wife Kim Kardashian have more cultural relevancy than the gossip section of a 213-year-old newspaper.

Without further ado, here are Kanye's best quotes from his GQ interview.

If he feels like TMZ is trying to "de-fang" him when they mock him:
"I don't have fangs. I'm a porcupine. I'm a blowfish. Like, I'm a -- what's the fish that blows up? Yeah. I'm a blowfish. I'm not a shark, I'm a blowfish. So that perfect example about me hitting my head, it's like a blowfish. I wasn't coming out of my house going to a paparazzi's house to attack them. I'm defending my family in front of my own house. I'm defending my name as someone's screaming something negative at me. That's a blowfish. People have me pinned as a shark or a predator in some way, and in no way am I that. I wouldn't want to hurt anyone. I want to defend people. I want to help people."

On rumors he gave a 45-minute toast to himself:
"And what I talked about in it was the idea of celebrity, and celebrities being treated like blacks were in the '60s, having no rights, and the fact that people can slander your name. I said that in the toast. And I had to say this in a position where I, from the art world, am marrying Kim. And how we're going to fight to raise the respect level for celebrities so that my daughter can live a more normal life. She didn't choose to be a celebrity. But she is. So I'm going to fight to make sure she has a better life."

On Jay Z and Beyonce not attending his wedding:
"All that, I wouldn't even speak on. It doesn't even matter to me whatsoever, who would show up. Because the most important person to show up there, to me, was Kim. And that's all that matters to me."

On who is responsible for his wedding photo garnering more likes than any other photo in Instagram's history:
"It's because of Kim. Meaning there's no photo that I would have put up by myself, or next to one of my smarty friends, that would have got that amount of likes ... Now the thing that is the most popular is also communicating the highest level of creativity. The concept of Kimye has more cultural significance than what Page Six could write."

On why he married Kim:
"Like they said in 'Step Brothers': Never lose your dinosaur. This is the ultimate example of a person never losing his dinosaur. Meaning that even as I grew in cultural awareness and respect and was put higher in the class system in some way for being this musician, I never lost my dinosaur. Kim is this girl who fucking turns me on. I love her. This is who I want to be next to and be around ... You mean to tell me that this girl with this fucking body and this face is also into style, and she's a nice person, and she has her own money and is family-oriented? That's just as cool as a fucking fighter jet or dinosaur! And just as rarely seen."

The Art Of Dressing Like Kanye West (And Kim Kardashian)

When Kanye West speaks, we listen. Well, maybe not all the time, as he can get a bit long-winded. But for his turn as cover star of GQ's August 2014 issue, West has grabbed our attention once again with his spot-on men's style tips.

In an accompanying online feature titled "The Kanye West Guide to God-Level Fashion," the 37-year-old explains the logic behind his "tonal" style, proving he's learned a thing or two from the Karl Lagerfelds and Riccardo Tiscis of this world.

When explaining his minimalist, pared-down aesthetic (a.k.a. the same look his wife Kim Kardashian has made her "own"), West told GQ:

"Most clothes are black or white. But I don't like all that contrast. It looks either too work, too waiter, or too wedding-y to me. If that's even a word, wedding-y. Anyway, that's why I like tonal. There's less contrast; it's more casual."

But there is one color that gets the Kanye West nod of approval. He said, "Military green is classic, masculine, not too trendy -- all the stuff men's clothes are supposed to be." We couldn't agree more.

Check out Kanye West serving good face below for GQ magazine, then head over to the site to find out why he's obsessed with wearing so many layers and skinny jeans.

Hue Series: How To Get Bold And Bright Lips

Don't Withdraw the Lure

$
0
0
Here's the good news: You already know what your spouse likes. The simple truth is that what lured him or her into your marriage is your most effective tool in your tool kit of how to keep a happy spouse or partner. Use it! First of all, it has been established as tasty and desirable. Second, withdrawing a lure breaks an implicit promise you made about the quality of life with you. Thirdly, it keeps your love hooked.

Use the bait that your love found so tasty when he or she chose you and provide more of it, not less, during your time together. Your spouse, when confronted with the bad press on marriage, should look like the cat that got the cream and feel lucky for choosing you. And you are going to keep right on making that luck grow!

Here are some of the common types of bait with ideas on how to keep them fresh:

Sex - If it was great sex that reeled in your love, get more creative, not less. Be innovative about ways, methods and choreography, take initiative and fill in with "dirty" language or telling them they are sexy and desirable at unexpected times.

Affirmation - If your mate needs words of praise (and don't we all), then do become expressive and complementary. Use every possible medium -- cards, post-it notes, singing, saying, whispering, letters, emails, texts, telegrams and memos. Don't hold back -- too much is not too much.

Helpfulness - Does your mate want your help? Do your vacuuming, errand running, cooking or garden maintenance please your partner? Then make "what can I do for you" or "how can I help" become your new motto. Also, be perceptive. See and intuit what she or he needs (not what you want them to need). Then do it -- big points -- really big points.

Quality time - Does just being to be around you give pleasure? Then don't be stingy with yourself and your time. Make room for their company while doing ordinary chores or relaxing and schedule together time regularly. Create generous amounts of quality time alone together, with friends, traveling, and working out or watching or playing sports.

Gift giving - Is your love someone who feels better when receiving gifts? Do tokens of your affection seem to help prove you care? Then become a shopper or get help to figure out the best gifts. (And I do mean gifts. Gifts are what is wanted. Presents are what you want to give.) Your tributes don't have to be big. In fact, small, well-chosen gifts given with great frequency trump bigger bucks spent once or twice a year.

Beauty - If your looks were the bait, then amp them up. Now isn't the time for a radical appearance change. A marriage license is not a license to loaf. Snagging a partner is the time to get sloppy. If appearance matters and you no longer make an effort, your mate will feel tricked.

Women are visual, too. Picture a guy lying on a couch in old boxers with a large belly hanging out and a few days' of stubble. dirty hair, watching TV at a high volume and stuffing junk food in his face. Til death do we part shouldn't be made this difficult. Make your mate proud while you're out and try not to lose too much ground when you're in.

They say we lose the majority of our body heat through our heads (which is not actually true), so that must be why Kendall Jenner is wearing nothing but a giant fur hat on the cover of Love magazine.

The 18-year-old model and reality star is topless on Love's July 2014 cover, and posed for equally racy shots inside the pages of the magazine.

Jenner promoted her sexy cover on July 21 by posting it to her Instgram account and writing, "andddd my COVER of LOVE is finally here!! #DavidSims @kegrand @thelovemagazine"

Of course, this isn't the first time Jenner has gone topless for her modeling career. In addition to walking in the Marc Jacobs show during New York Fashion Week in a completely sheer sweater, the "Keeping Up with the Kardashians" star recently posed topless for Mikael Jansson for Interview magazine. She also went topless as a mermaid for photographer Russell James, as part of his "Nomad Two Worlds" project.

5 Ways Your Skin Is Telling You Something's Wrong

Published: 07/21/2014 10:43 AM EDT on LiveScience

The largest organ in the body, the skin, is sometimes said to be a window into a person's general well-being, because it can carry clues about the health of other organs. Changes in the skin, ranging from discoloration to new growth, may sometimes be early signs of more serious underlying health problems, dermatologists say.

"I think of us as medical detectives," said Dr. Doris Day, a dermatologist at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City. "I'm always looking for that clue — when did this change happen, why it's here, what are the other symptoms … Those clues will help me find what's going on inside, both in the mind and the body."

A handful of skin changes have been commonly associated with internal diseases. When people spot these signs, they might need to see their doctor, Day said. [7 Weirdest Medical Conditions]

"A few weeks is not uncommon to have something come and go, but if it persists beyond that, I would say see your doctor — especially if it gets worse during that time," Day said.

Rashes and patches on the skin

In general, a rash that does not respond to treatment, and is accompanied by other symptoms — such as fever, joint pain and muscle aches — could be a sign of an internal problem or infection. A rash may also occur due to an allergy or signal a reaction to a medicine, according to the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD).

A velvety rash on the back of the neck or around the arms, usually with a color slightly darker than the person's normal skin tone, is a sign that the patient may have an increased risk for developing type 2 diabetes, Day said. "When I see that, I warn the patient to get their blood sugar checked, and watch their diet."

Less commonly, the velvety rash — called acanthosis nigricans — could be a warning sign of cancer in an internal organ, such as the stomach or liver, according to Mayo Clinic.

A purple rash on the lower legs that does not respond to topical medication can be a sign of hepatitis C infection, Day said.

Bronzing of the skin and other discolorations

In people with diabetes, a bronzing of the skin can be a sign of a problem with iron metabolism, Day said. A yellowing of the skin, on the other hand, may signal liver failure, and may occur along with the yellowing of the whites of the eyes, Day said.

A darkening of the skin — mostly visible in scars and skin folds, as well as on joints, such as elbows and knees — could be a sign of hormonal disease, such as Addison's disease, which affects the adrenal glands, according to the AAD.

New growths

People who see new growths on the skin should always have them looked at by a doctor, as they could be skin cancer, and are sometimes also a sign of internal disease or a genetic syndrome, according to the AAD.

For example, in a condition called eruptive exanthemas, yellow bumps on the arms, legs or rear could be a result of high triglyceride levels, signaling uncontrolled diabetes, according to the AAD.

The distribution pattern of acne also can provide clues about the underlying problem. In women, acne that appears mainly along the lower face or jaw line can be a sign of polycystic ovarian syndrome, Day said. The condition often causes other symptoms, such as weight changes, thinning hair and increased hair growth on the face, she said.

Nail changes

Changes in the color or shape of nails can often be a sign of deficiency or organ system issues, Day said.

For example, nail changes that look like fungal infection may actually be a result of psoriasis in the nails, even though the condition typically affects the skin. People who also have joint pain could have a form of arthritis called psoriatic arthritis, Day said.

In addition, liver problems and kidney problems can sometimes cause changes in the color of the nails, Day said.

Changes in skin's hardness and dryness

High blood pressure and kidney problems sometimes result in a thickening of the skin on the shin, Day said. Moreover, very dry, itchy skin could be a sign of hormonal problems, such as an underactive thyroid, she said.

"If you are over 30 or 40, and you've never had eczema as a kid — and all of a sudden, your skin is dry and you seem to be getting eczema — that could be sign of a hormonal issue like low thyroid" function, Day said.

People with an autoimmune disease called systemic sclerosis may experience a swelling and hardening of the skin. In more severe cases, this could result in the hardening of internal organs, such as the lungs or heart, according to the AAD.

On the other hand, very loose and silky skin is a symptom of a rare connective tissue disease, called acquired cutis laxa, which could signal blood cancers such as lymphoma or multiple myeloma, and could progress to affect internal organs, according to the AAD.

Lauren Conrad Is Aware That Allure Thinks She's 'A Basic B--ch'

There are multiple entries listed under the term "basic bitch" on UrbanDictionary.com, but perhaps the most universal definition is "just an extra regular female."

So it's no surprise that Lauren Conrad called out Allure Magazine when they threw shade at the reality TV star-turned-fashion designer, classifying her as "Basic" in an article. Allure's article elaborates: "Made famous by Kreayshawn, and viral by YouTube, the Basic woman is remarkably unremarkable. What's noteworthy about her style is its very plainness. Except to her. She swears those red soled shoes are cutting-edge."

Conrad shot back at the magazine on Twitter:

Don't worry, LC. These are beautiful, loose waves that do not resemble a sausage in the least:

And Allure says that any Basic's favorite nail color is "Ballet Slippers," when clearly Conrad's favorite is Bachelorette Bash:

This family is clearly too busy having a blast to worry about the epic laundry situation they just created.

Rachel Andrews and her husband, Alex Howard, from Bellingham, Washington set out to take a nice family photo and commemorate their five-year anniversary. "We never got good wedding photos or family photos so this was our way to make up for it in one shoot," Andrews told ABC News.

Though the photo shoot -- like most family activities -- didn't go according to plan, the result was exactly what the family hoped for.

The photographer, Aaron Nelson, of Evantide Photography, told The Huffington Post in an email: "This was a 5 year anniversary/vow renewal shoot that Rachel Andrews wanted, ending on the mud flats for some messy fun family photos."

The photos show the family poised and put-together, then suddenly slinging some serious mud. Even Andrews' delicate wedding dress was not spared from the sludge.

How To Carry A Backpack And Still Look Like A Grown-Up

$

Chances are that at some point in your life you owned a backpack. Maybe you had a JanSport in elementary school to tote around your Spacemaker and Tamagotchi. Or perhaps you bought one for that summer you backpacked through Europe. One way or another, it's probably safe to assume that after college, most people graduate to slightly more sophisticated methods of carry their belongings.

But it doesn't have to be this way -- backpacks are having a renaissance. Thanks to cool new designs, there are many that work outside of the classroom. As long as you follow a few key rules:

  1. Avoid polyester backpacks unless you are trying to channel your inner 10-year-old. Instead, opt for knapsacks made of leather, canvas or suede for a more grown-up feel.

  2. Though backpacks generally work better with more casual outfits, a structured backpack looks more polished and can pair well with your office attire.

  3. Make sure your outfit is sophisticated. Avoid short pleated skirts, Mary Janes or anything else that could have people mistaking you for a school girl.

  4. If your backpack could work on a hike, then it's the wrong one for everyday use.

  5. Carry your backpack over one shoulder so it doesn't look like you're headed to class.

Below are a few stylish ladies who know how to rock a backpack. Take some style cues from them and then shop our favorite picks below.

It was an action-packed day as the group took some jet skis out for a spin, and Gomez was spotted holding on tight to Chiabra while he steered. Later, Gomez, Delevingne and another female friend continued the fun, daring to parasail high above the water.

That night, the girls changed out of their swimwear and continued the birthday festivities in St. Tropez. "Thank you SO much for my birthday wishes ☺️ -this has been the BEST birthday yet! THANK YOU!!!!" Gomez wrote, along with a photo of herself and her pals:
