The Daily Show's Jessica Williams Takes On Army's New Hairstyle Rules With 'Operation Black Hair'

If you've been keeping up with the news on the Army's new grooming and appearance policies, then you know just how biased the new standards seem. Basically, the natural way in which our hair grows out of our head, including the hairstyles that help maintain those follicles, have been banned.

Silly, right? Well it definitely makes for some great comic relief when you get past the sad reality. And that is exactly what "The Daily Show" had in mind.

This week comedian Jessica Williams took on the hot hair topic for the Comedy Central program with a video entitled "Operation Black Hair." In her signature tongue-in-cheek humor, Williams attempts to educate the masses -- er, white people -- on how to maintain "an army without a lot of pissed of black ladies."

5 Ways Concealer Will Change Your Makeup Game

After a late night or when faced with an unexpected acne breakout, concealer is one of the first things we reach for in our makeup bag.

And like most cosmetics, concealer has many uses beyond what it says on the label. Here are five different ways to make your life a little easier with a just a few dabs.

1. Make your lipstick last longer.

concealer lipstick

No lip liner? No problem. With an applicator or your finger, line and fill in your lips with the cover-up, making sure to blend so there aren't any uneven spots. Allow it to dry and then apply your lipstick.

Concealer helps your lip color last longer, adds dimension to the shade and prevents feathering. A dab of this product on your cupid's bow will make your lipstick radiate even more.

2. Give your lashes more volume.

Volumizing mascaras don't always do the trick, but a little concealer can help your eyelashes go the distance. With a small brush, apply a liquid formula to your lashes -- make sure to extend the brush to the tips. Then put on your mascara and marvel at the results!

3. Create the ultimate neutral eyeshadow.

concealer eyeshadow

During the morning rush, sometimes you just want something to refresh your eyes without eating up your time. Fulfill this makeup dream with cover-up.

4. Stop your eye makeup from running.

Quickly combat streaks of eyeliner and splashes of shadow by blending concealer into the problem areas -- that consistency will rub out the color, while giving you a fresh slate for touch-ups.

5. Enhance your flushed cheeks.

concealer blush

Whether you're looking to mattify your face or you want to amp up your glow, concealer will transform your bright or brooding blushes.

There are two ways to go about using concealer to enhance blush. One: Place small dots of cover-up along your cheeks and blend up with your fingertips, adding a powder blush on top. Two: Mix a little bit of concealer with a cream blush to add more warmth to your face.

Have you tried any of these concealer tricks? Let us know in the comments section!

Miss Idaho Wears An Insulin Pump, And She's Not Afraid To Show It

Miss Idaho 2014 is here to Pump. You. Up!

This isn't getting "pumped" in the conventional, Arnold Schwarzenegger-approved sense. Miss Idaho (aka Sierra Sandison) does it with her insulin pump, which the 20-year-old has started wearing with pride after struggling with her diagnoses of Type 1 diabetes two years ago.

"In February 2012, my world was flipped upside down by my diabetes diagnosis," Sandison wrote in a blog post after winning The Miss Idaho Scholarship Program last Saturday. "For a while, I pretended that I didn’t have diabetes, hoping it would go away. That led to crazy blood sugars, of course, and a very sick, grumpy, and discouraged Sierra."

Upset, but with no other options, Sandison says she gradually worked to bring her condition under control through a low-carb diet, lots of exercise and insulin injections. She was still self-conscious, however, especially when she was on stage for pageants.

"When I first started competing, I was using injections rather than a pump," she explains. "I didn’t want people to see a weird-tubey-machine-thing attached to me all the time, and could not wrap my head around having a medical device on my body for the rest of my life."

That changed when she learned of Nicole Johnson -- winner of Miss America 1999 -- who won the pageant while wearing an insulin pump.

Inspired, Sandison got the pump, and, after agonizing over the decision, wore it onstage Saturday during the Miss Idaho Scholarship Program pageant. She described the experience in her blog:
As I nervously walked out of the dressing room the first night of competition, the first person I saw said, “What’s that? Is that an insulin pump?”. My stomach flipped upside down. “I shouldn’t have worn this,” I thought, “everyone is going to be confused and wonder what I am wearing.”

Turns out the inquisitor, a fellow pageant competitor, also had diabetes -- but had opted not to get a pump for similar reasons. Undeterred, Sandison wore her pump throughout the competition, including in her bikini. The photo (see above) has inspired others to share photos of their own insulin pumps, united by the hashtag "#showmeyourpump."

See some of those photos, below:

The online campaign has inspired countless diabetics who rely on insulin pumps to help manage their blood sugar. Sandison's original Facebook post features more than a hundred comments and photos from people in similar situations. "You changed my 11 year old daughter's summer!" reads one comment. "She's been so self-conscious but since she read about you & saw this photo, she cannot wait to wear a bathing suit tomorrow."

This Closet Is Probably Bigger Than Your Apartment

For many of us, a 3,000 square-foot, three-story space sounds like the kind of thing our real estate dreams are made of. For one woman in Texas, however, it's just one very important part of her home.

In a space larger than most major city apartments lies Theresa Roemer’s closet. The wonderland of shoes, clothes and accessories -- or a "she-cave," as she calls it -- boasts goods from some of the biggest designers in the industry including Dior, Chanel, and Christian Louboutin. According to Roemer, the closet was a "life-long dream."

But the extravagant room does way more than simply showcase her impressive collection. "This closet was built and intended for fundraising," Roemer explained to Houston's KHOU News.

In fact, since moving in just a few months ago, Roemer has already raised tens of thousands of dollars for charity by hosting fundraising events. Talk about a fashionable way to give back!

Let's Talk About My Hair (Before You Touch It)

$

I can't pinpoint the exact moment my hair became a blessing instead of a curse. It wasn't in elementary school, when outings to the local Supercuts left me in tears. It wasn't in middle school, when the poofy pyramid sitting on my head was so different from the straight, obedient hair of the rest of my family that a few of my classmates asked if I was adopted.

By the time I reached high school, I'd given up trying to tame the beast. I stopped cutting and shampooing, and let my hair do its thing. No drastic change occurred overnight, but by senior year my hair fell down my back in curls of varying shapes and sizes. Still, beautiful hair has a price.

From Samson's shorn locks to Kate Middleton making headlines when she changes hairstyles, people all over the world, at every point in time, have been obsessed with hair. But in this country, we have a particular obsession with controlling hair.

With hair tied to so many aspects of a person -- gender, race, sexuality, health -- it's not surprising that many decide other's tresses are their business. Just look at the petition to comb Blue Ivy's hair. Now, I am not a black woman, and I don't know what it's like to have my hair viewed as a politically-charged statement. But as my hair has grown longer and wilder, I've discovered that all curls are politicized to some extent.

Curls aren't regular, or docile, or malleable. Most people see curls as a problem to be corrected.

"Your hair is so long! It's beautiful," strangers will say to me, but before I can thank them, the compliment is almost always followed by "Have you ever considered straightening it?"

Family, friends, acquaintances, strangers, everyone seems to have an opinion about my hair.

"Never cut it!"

"So you ever planning on getting some of that mane cut off?"

"You should donate it."

I understand, and respect, women in orthodox cultures who choose to cover their hair to shield it from the gaze of outsiders. My hair is powerful. Curls are contradictory, associated with both childhood innocence and uninhibited sexuality. For some reason, this gives certain guys the license to comment, from the innocuous -- "Your hair is top-tier." -- to the insulting: "Your hair looks like you just... y'know."

And of course, people want to touch it. My hair has its own atmosphere, and woe to anyone who gets caught in it. I can see the look in their eyes, as their gaze drifts from my face to my curls.

"Can I touch your hair?" they say, their hands already buried in my thick locks. But, my hair is magical, attuned to my feelings -- if I like you, the petting and braiding and touching feels nice. If I don't, well, your sweaty palms manage to snag on every knot and tangle.

With the chic bob re-emerging as a hot trend, and the fear of frizz instilled in young women like the fear of death, my friends and family often ask me when I'll cut my hair. I never have an answer. I keep it long not to make a statement, but because my hair is part of me. When I let my hair down, I envision Jane Eyre wandering through the moors, Lady Godiva riding through Coventry, a Pre-Raphaelite painting. But the epitaph that gets thrown my way the most is dirty hippie. The fact that I go through approximately one bottle of shampoo a year probably doesn't help.

It's just always surprising to me how often I am judged because of my hair. I think my curls are beautiful. My hair is big, and easy to hide behind. Many times I wonder if people see my hair instead of me. If my hair disappeared, would I go along with it? My curls are part of me, but they shouldn't define me, either.

Let Chrissy Teigen's Blond Hair Be Your Guide To Lightened Locks

Going from brown to blonde can be risky business. Nobody wants to revisit the chunky highlight trend of 2004, and overdoing it with the bleach can be just as tragic. So before you head to the salon for a lightened look, you might want to pull up a recent photo of Chrissy Teigen, who just perfected the summer trend.

Teigen recently made the switch from brunette to sun-kissed blond, and like most everything she does, she totally nailed the look:

The 28-year-old model's stylist, Tracey Cunningham, posted an adorable Instagram of Teigen as a blonde baby, next to a shot of her as a blonde now:

SAY CHEESE: Japan's Most Famous 'Schoolgirl' Is A Man

From the neck up, Hideaki Kobayashi is a middle-aged, bald man with a bushy mustache.

From the neck down, this Japanese man could pass for a Japanese schoolgirl as he parades all over Tokyo dressed in "Seifuku," the name for the sailor outfits worn by teenage girls.

hideaki kobayashi 3

The 50-something Kobayashi started dressing up as a teenage girl about three years ago. Before that, he was a computer engineer and an accomplished photographer — careers that he's kept alive.

He made his debut at an art and design event, but joked about the reasons behind his decision to dress like a giddy schoolgirl.

"That's a difficult question," Kobayashi told Kotaku.com last year. "It's not really something I've thought too deeply about. Hrm. I guess it's because sailor suits look good on me?"

hideaki kobayashi 2

As he's become more comfortable in his own skin -- and the schoolgirl skirts -- Kobayashi has become more direct about his intentions.

"Japan society is all about conforming to the other people," Kobayashi told CNN. "I just want to wear something cute."

hideaki kobayashi 4

Kobayashi is attracted to women, and identifies as a man even when he's challenging gender norms.

hideakikobayashi5

It seems to be working for him.

Even though Kobayashi sometimes gets rude comments from men on the streets of Tokyo, he's became an internet celebrity.

He's proud that he's sought out by young girls who want to take pictures with him and post them online, Oddity Central reports.

Kobayashi's reputation has spread so far that one Japanese prep school has hired him to teach teenagers to think for themselves.

"If there's something you want to do, do that," Kobayashi told CNN. "That's my message. Be yourself."

What The Heck Do You Do With... Toner?

$
0
0
Toners are the one skincare product I always notice collecting dust on drugstore shelves. And after getting the perplexed face from friends everytime I brag about its benefits, I believe I now know why: few people know how to use it, how it works or whether or not they really need it.

Traditionally, toners were recommended by dermatologists as a part of your face washing routine to remove any excess dirt. However, there are now moisturizing and skin-correcting formulations that go beyond getting all the grime out of your pores.

When used immediately after cleansing the skin, it can yield complexion-enhancing results. But before you grab the cotton balls and toner, here are three things you should know.

Toners can be used morning and evening.

Dermatologist and skincare line creator Dr. Ava Shamban put it best when she described toners as "the appetizer and not the main course." Making toner the second step after washing your face better prepares your skin for moisturizers and anti-aging treatments.

During the day, dermatologist and Sebamed medical spokesperson Dr. Marnie B. Nussbaum, recommends first using a gentle wash like Sebamed Liquid Face & Body to remove dead skin cells and excess sebum before applying toner, moisturizer and then sunscreen.

For nighttime, after cleansing she suggests following up your toner application with a hydrating serum or cream.

Toners are the most gentle way to exfoliate the skin.

This skincare benefit is an under-appreciated fact about toners."Witness that brown scuzz on your cotton ball when you wipe your face!" says Dr. Shamban.

While all skin types can gain from using toners, those with acne prone or oilier skin can truly reap the benefits. Dr. Nussbaum adds, "Because toners are formulated to remove sebum, oil and dirt from the pores, they help clear pores to minimize breakouts and blackheads."

Just be sure to avoid unnecessary irritants such as menthol, peppermint and citrus oils or toners with a very high alcohol or fragrance content. These ingredients may potentially give you an allergic reaction.

According to board certified dermatologist Dr. Marina Peredo, water-based formulas loaded with beneficial ingredients such as antioxidants and niacinamide are ideal for sensitive skin.

Toners help to restore your skin's pH balance.

Not all bar soaps and cleansers are squeaky clean -- they can alter your skin's natural pH balance and cause irritation. Dr. Peredo notes that derms once recommended toners to remedy the effects of not-so-gentle or water-soluble face washes.

Dr. Nussbaum also notes that if you're washing your face with hot water and abrasive cloths (which upset skin's delicate protective barrier), toners provide an extra barrier of protection with antioxidants and minimize the appearance of large pores. "Choose a toner that's pH balanced, meaning it will clear excess oil without going overboard and stripping your skin," she says.

Toner ingredients like cucumber and vitamin B5 help fight inflammation, and calm redness while hydrating and soothing skin. But no matter what it says on the label, if any product is stinging upon application, Dr. Nussbaum believes it may be too harsh and not right for your skin type.

Leave it to Dolce and Gabbana to convince us to spend an entire paycheck on a flight to Capri.

The luxury fashion house debuted its "Alta Moda" haute couture collection to a very lucky group of editors, buyers and big spenders in a secret cove off the Italian island. With nautical-themed lounge chairs complete with plush pillows, this was like no other fall runway show we've seen.

We're not sure what we love more: The crushing ocean waves in the background or the elaborate dresses and accessories. But one thing's for sure, Dolce and Gabbana's Autumn/Winter 2014 couture show was the most beautiful showcase on Twitter this week.

Is it a god? Is it a fashion guru? Is it a recently married celebrity? It is Kanye West.

West graces the cover of GQ's August issue wearing a beige jacket and a white tee that probably costs more than any shirt you own. The issue, which hits stands on July 29, features West opening up about his recent wedding with Kim Kardashian, being a (self-proclaimed) god of fashion and how he keeps his lifestyle outrageous.

Kim also shared a photo of Kanye's cover on Instagram and wrote "So sexy! My husband on the cover of GQ shot by Patrick Demarchelier!!!"

How To Throw A Wedding That Everyone Will Be Talking About

$

0
2014-07-02-brides_logocopy.jpg

By Elizabeth Mitchell for Brides

Obviously lush flowers and a gorgeous venue are some of the elements of a beautiful wedding, but picture-perfect décor doesn't ensure an epic party. Score a 10 out of 10 for overall experience by following these simple yet effective tips that will have your guests talking about your wedding for years to come.

1. Ask for song requests.

To ensure everyone is having a great time and dancing the night away, have your guests request a song via the invitation response, recommends Key Largo wedding planner Lynn D'Ascanio of Dasignerevents.com. "Give this list of songs to your DJ, along with the name of the person who requested each song. That way, if the dance floor starts to thin out, the DJ can play songs off of the request list." This pretty much guarantees that the person who requested the song will get up and dance and encourage others to do so as well.

2. Don't let your friends and family talk forever.

"Many fun events have been driven into the ground by deathly long speeches," points out Lynn Jawitz, owner of Florisan Wedding and Event Design in NYC. To keep the party popping, ask your speech givers to keep their toasts short and sweet.

3. Remember to thank your guests.

Speaking of speeches, it's important to let your guests knows how much you personally appreciate them coming. "It's hard to believe how often this simple step is overlooked," notes Jawitz. "Bite the bullet, make a speech (keep it short, of course) and just genuinely thank your guests for dropping their lives that day to share it with you."

4. And keep them in the know.

According to D'Ascanio, the best weddings are the ones that are organized and follow a timeline. "When the events of the day unfold in a timely manner, and the bridal party and guests alike are not left standing around wondering what's next or where they should go or what they should be doing, the entire day seems flawless."

5. Add in an element of surprise.

Who doesn't love a special surprise at a wedding? "You could hire a group of singers or dancers disguised as wait staff to break out into song or dance during dinner," suggests D'Ascanio. Or you and the groom could perform a practiced dance routine yourselves for the first dance, offers Greg Jenkins, founder of Bravo Productions. "A 'wow' factor can be memorable and will ensure your guests have a blast."

6. Opt for a short ceremony.

If possible, try to keep your ceremony simple and short in length. "A long, drawn-out ceremony takes away that guest energy level at the onset, and sometimes it cannot be recovered for the reception," warns Jenkins.

7. Give birthday shout outs.

Does your BFF have a birthday on the same day as your big day? Or is it his parents' anniversary too? "Have your MC acknowledge any birthdays and/or anniversaries with a dedicated song during the reception," advises Daniela Grafman, wedding & special events coordinator at Vision Entertainment Group LLC. People love attention. Plus, it's just a sweet gesture.

8. Hire a great band or DJ.

After all, they can, in fact, make or break a party. Florida wedding planner Aviva Samuels of Kiss The Planner, recommends looking for a high energy performer, while being careful not to choose an annoying personality to be your MC. "Great vocals, great dance moves and great spunk will have everyone up on their feet until it's time to go home. Seamless song transitions and the ability to read the crowd when they want to hear more of the same sound or a desire to switch to a different sound is where a DJ's talent also comes into play."

9. Provide transportation.

If you're hosting a destination wedding or your wedding is in a remote location, be sure to provide transportation for guests from their hotel to your wedding and back, says Lauren Randolph, founder of My Hotel Wedding. "This way people don't have to worry about driving home drunk, which guarantees that they can party harder."

10. Allow your guests plenty of free time.

This is particularly important if you have a destination wedding or a bunch of guests in from out of town, says professional wedding planner Sandy Malone of Weddings in Vieques. "Back to back activities after a long trip will run them into the ground. Let them have some time and space to explore and they'll be refreshed and excited at all of your events." We concur.

Rita Ora's 'My Little Pony' Hair Is A Must-See On Our Beauty List

Celebs color their hair all shades of the rainbow (ahem, Nicole Richie), but we thought our eyes were playing tricks on us when we saw Rita Ora's new colorful hairdo.

The 23-year-old British singer made an appearance at Michalsky Style Night in Berlin sporting a purple, teal and blonde dip-dyed ponytail that reminded us of "My Little Pony." The colorful tresses cascaded beautifully against her shoulder and added an unexpected pop to her all-black outfit.

Check out Ora's '80s-tastic hair below and see which other stars made this week's best and worst beauty list.

BEST: Rita Ora

Isn't this multicolored hairstyle rad? It almost deflects attention away from Ora's gelled sideburns. But with her neutral makeup, we give it a thumbs up.

BEST: Debra Messing

"The Mysteries of Laura" star's red hair looks really ravishing. Styled in big barrel curls, Messing's hair frames her face perfectly and accentuates her peachy makeup and navy eyeliner.

BEST: Jessica Chastain

Chastain is a vision of summer with her full, copper bangs, metallic gold eyeshadow and coral lipstick. The twisted updo helps to showcase those gorgeous chandelier earrings.

BEST: America Ferrera

We're getting pinup girl vibes from Ferrera with her glossy, side-swept waves, flirty eyelashes and red lips. Dewy skin helps to give this look a modern touch.

WORST: Kate Hudson

kate hudson

We're huge fans of '90s-inspired dark lipstick. However, this burgundy shade looks garish against Hudson's super tanned skin.

WORST: Rose McGowan

rose mcgowan

McGowan barely looks recognizable with her jet black locks all pulled back. We wished she would've spent a bit more time carefully choosing the best wine lip color for her porcelain complexion and filling in her brows so that they don't appear noticeably different.

WORST: Karina Smirnoff

The "Dancing With The Stars" professional has a lot going on with her over-plucked eyebrows, white eyeliner and melon red lipstick, which doesn't flatter her bronzed skin.

WORST: Alexia Dox

This is a messy fishtail braid to the extreme! While her makeup isn't entirely terrible, we just can't stop staring at all the flyaways.
