Anna Wintour's Reaction To Crying Baby North Was The Best Moment At Kanye West's Fashion Show

Forget the unveiling of the "Yeezy Boost," the real entertainment at Kanye West's fashion show on Thursday was happening right in the front row.

A star-studded crowd at Kanye West's show during New York Fashion Week saw Kim Kardashian and baby North West seated between Beyoncé and Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour.

It all started out so smoothly:

But when North got a little fed up with daddy's new shoe collection, she decided to let it be known. And Wintour's reaction was priceless:

For comparison, here's Anna Wintour at last year's NYFW:

Other celebs in the room caught the moment as well.

"Best pic AHAHAHAH," Kardashian's mom, Kris Jenner, wrote on Instagram:

Now's the time to starting thinking about what to get your special someone for Valentine's Day. Flowers and chocolates are always nice but giving is more fun when you get creative. Below are some ideas that are guaranteed to delight any of the loves in your life!

1. Eberjey Gisele PJ Set, $115

I recently purchased these AMAZINGLY soft PJ's by Eberjey at my favorite LA lingerie and jewelry store, Rocks & Silk. They are made from "soft-like-butter" jersey and trimmed with pastel pink piping for a sweet, vintage-inspired touch. These make the perfect gift for any woman--they're an understated sexy take on the men's pajama and look great on all body types.

2. Jimmy Jane Afterglow Natural Massage Oil candle, $29

Rub each other the right way for Valentine's Day and set a sensual mood when you light up the room with this aphrodisiac-scented candle. Make the mood last even after the candle burns down -- you're left with warm oil to smooth onto skin for a massage. Scents include bourbon, cucumber water, dark vanilla, and pink lotus.

3. Kacey K lips necklace with white pave diamonds, $450

I met designer Kacey Karp of Kacey K in the Hamptons last summer and was wowed by her selection of gorgeous and trendy fine jewelry. These delicate 14K gold lips look beautiful on their own or as a layering piece. Plus, they come in six different versions from plain gold ($250) to rose gold with black diamonds.

4. 911 Caviar

911 Caviar distributes the finest caviar and specialty gourmet foods anywhere in the U.S. Products include Iranian Beluga, Sevruga and Osetra as well as American Caviar. One of the best caviars to try for the price is their sturgeon caviar (4 oz. for $78). It has a sweet and buttery, nut-like flavor and compares in color and taste to Caspian Osetra caviar. I order this delicious American caviar for all special occasions!

Ashton Kutcher Brags About Having Sex With Mila Kunis

Ashton Kutcher gets to do a lot of cool stuff, you know, since he's a very famous celebrity. But the coolest thing he gets to do is have sex with Mila Kunis -- and this is something he wants people to know, according to Us Weekly.

"Last week, I was walking with Mila Kunis, who's my fiancee. I get to have sex with her. It's amazing," the 37-year-old told the crowd at Lenovo's Tech My Way conference in Sydney, Australia, on Friday.

Later, Kutcher plugged Kunis' new movie, "Jupiter Ascending," telling the audience, "She plays the Queen of Humanity. I have sex with the Queen of Humanity!"

If you're confused as to what any of this has to do with tech, so are we. Also, Kutcher and Kunis welcomed a daughter last year, so we're pretty sure they had sex at least once (although there are other ways to bring a child into this world), but we're glad we now know for sure.

Kate Upton Channels Marilyn Monroe In Topless Photo

Kate Upton is having a Marilyn moment.

Upton appears topless in a recent black and white photo taken by photographer Sebastian Faena. Faena shared the image on Instagram Thursday and the resemblance between Upton and Marilyn Monroe is striking, from the platinum blond hair and dark eyebrows to the sultry expression. People magazine noted the image is similar to the "Last Sitting" photos Monroe took with Bert Stern.

This isn't the first time the 22-year-old supermodel has been compared to the screen siren.

"I always thought Marilyn was so beautiful and iconic, it was amazing to even be mentioned in the same sentence as her," she told British Vogue last year. "But I feel like nowadays it's easy to be genuine and show your personality, whereas I don't think Marilyn had that opportunity. And clearly she had a dark side, and I don't have that."

Taco Bell Flash Tats Really Let Your Taco Love Shine

If you happen to love Taco Bell's slogan of "Live Mas," then you're in luck. You can now (temporarily) tattoo yourself with it. Yes, you read that right.

Coinciding with New York Fashion Week (coincidence? we think not), Taco Bell released the temporary tattoos Friday afternoon to much fanfare. They offered a limited number of free flash tattoos -- which include regular designs, as well as a few themed ones -- which were gone quickly, but the remaining tattoos will sell for $8.99 a sheet (or $19.99 for 3 sheets) until Saturday morning at 11 a.m.

Sounds like the perfect Valentine's Day gift for the festival/fast food lover in your life:

Granted, Subway and McDonald's have somewhat ventured into the food-and-fashion before, but we think Taco Bell is doing it best.

Hot or Heartfelt: How to Write a Meaningful Valentine in 18 Minutes or Less

$
0
0
Sure, most women love receiving an exquisite bouquet of long stem roses, dinner at a Michelin Five Star restaurant or a bit of bling, but the most lasting of gifts for a heartthrob of either gender is your valentine. Why not make it special?

I know, Hallmark makes it so easy. They've gotten cleverer, hip, even. And there are those boutique-y imprints nowadays that you could almost have written yourself--if you were more of a writer. Why bother putting yourself through the torture of writing?

First, because it doesn't have to be torture. Writing a Valentine can be a pleasurable exercise, I assure you. And secondly, she--or he--will appreciate your effort. Your personally written words will mean more than anything a copywriter in Kansas City can come up with.

Dr. Craig Malkin, a relationship expert and Instructor in Psychology at Harvard Medical School says, "A personal valentine, from the heart, tells your partner they're important to you. Our capacity to be open with our partners about their importance in our lives is one of the surest ways to strengthen the relationship. And nothing conveys that more clearly than our own words."

So, how to write a valentine and where to start? Try these 7 simple steps:

Step 1: 1 Minute: Know Your Audience: Duh, right? Seems obvious that you do know your audience, but this first rule of writing is particularly apt here. You may be tempted to write the valentine you would like to receive, but first determine what would make your little honey-bun's heart go all a-flutter: admiration? Adoration? Something hot and sexy? Flirtatious? Should you make him laugh? Not sure? Ask him (or her).

And how do you want her to feel when she reads your valentine? Deeply loved? Admired? Turned on? Happy? Do you want her to laugh? Smile? A well written valentine starts with the end in mind.

Step 2: 1.5 Minutes: Tune into Tone: For a new relationship, you may want to hold back a bit. Don't assume the person feels the way you do, unless he's told you so. Perhaps, find one special moment to relive in the valentine. If you want to be flirtatious, do so, but leave something to the imagination if your relationship has not visited such territory before. On the other hand, trust your intuition. If you sense it's time to take a risk, you may be right.

A long-term relationship may benefit from a little sizzle. You can go sexy, passionate or deeply loving and adoring. You can even try a little of all three.

Don't underestimate the power of humor. Says Dr. Malkin, "Humor's a known aphrodisiac. For one thing, it lights up the pleasure and reward centers of the brain. Bottom line, funny is sexy."

Step 3: Half a Minute: Dear ______: Sure you can go all saccharine with "To My Beloved Wife" but it aint' gonna sound fresh. This writer suggests you stick with the tried and true, "Dear Abigail," unless, of course, her name isn't Abigail.

Step 4: 10 Minutes: Get to the Heart of It: This is the part where you come from your heart. What do you truly love most about your beloved? What do you admire? Or what sexy thing do you want to try with him after that 5-star dinner (do ask your intuition if he's likely to find the idea a turn-on or turn-off. If you don't know him well enough, save it for when you do).

Here are some tips to make your writing meaningful and elicit the emotion you're looking for; try one or two:

  • Get Quirky: Here's where another important rule of writing comes in: get specific. If you say she's beautiful, give specific examples. And don't just go with the obvious--eyes, curves. What's something unusual about your loved one's beauty?

  • Reminisce: Recall a particularly powerful moment you experienced--the time you climbed Mt. Rainier, the time you went camping in Big Sur and got rained out, only to discover a cute log cabin with Sunday Brunch and a 5-piece jazz band, the trip to Manhattan where your heel broke off and he gave you a piggy back ride for two city blocks, the picnic dinner on the beach that happened--unexpectedly--to be the evening the symphony played. Time in nature can be especially evocative.

  • Get Showy: You've heard the writing adage, "Show; don't tell," I presume. Use a metaphor, or a specific experience to illustrate your point. Compare her to a summer's day--or not.

  • Look to the Future: If it's appropriate, paint a picture of your future together. What would it look like? Again, use those quirky and specific details to make the image real for your sweetie-pie. Remember, if the relationship is new and you're not sure your honey feels the same way, take it slow.

  • Should it rhyme? Rhyme's a funny thing. It's certainly not very modern to rhyme. On the other hand, if you're being a playful--and you're good at finding the surprising rhyme--go for it. Maybe stay away from iambic pentameter, though, unless you're writing a sonnet.

Step 5: 1 Minute: Add a Quote? Feeling that your writing falls short of the depth of your love? Or looking for a little humor to close? After you've shared in your own words, you can certainly cap it with the expert wordsmithing of a professional writer or public figure. Here are a few of my favorites:
Blessed is the influence of one true, loving human soul on another. - George Eliot
Love does not consist in gazing at each other, but in looking outward together in the same direction. - Antoine de Saint-Exupery
It is only love which sets us free. - Maya Angelou
What is love? It is the morning and the evening star. - Sinclair Lewis
A loving heart is the truest wisdom. - Charles Dickens

You can find more quotes about love here.

Step 6: Half a Minute: End Simply; Simply End: Here, you may simply end with "Love," and your name. However, if you wish to get playful, feel free to add an adjective and title, such as "Love, your adoring wife, Lisa." It's a little mushy, but no one would hold it against you.

Step 7: 3 Minutes to 3 Hours: PS Surprise Him: Want to add something fun? Send your beloved on a mini-adventure. Perhaps you've left a little surprise for him in the bedroom that he needs to search for. Or maybe a mini-scavenger hunt in the garden leads to a candle-lit table (well, not in the garden in New England in February, but you Floridians and Californians can get away with it). This is your chance to be romantic and add a sense of playfulness and creativity.

Bonus: Dress it Up: You've written such a lovely valentine. Shouldn't it look as charming as it reads? Consider a card made from pink construction paper. Cut out a few red hearts (remember how to fold the paper in half, so the two sides look even?) and glue them onto the card or even add a doily (one of those white lacy things). You can add a little glitter and add a few extra words to encircle the center heart. It doesn't take much to make a pretty valentine that will be treasured forever. If cardboard and doilies are not your style, consider a collage using images from magazines or create something on your computer with clip art. Your creativity is bound to be rewarded, because you're putting something of you into the gift.

You can put your valentine in an envelope, attach it to a gift, or even put it in a box with a bow on its own to accentuate the love that went into writing and making it.

Happy Valentine's Day. It's all about the love--show some by writing a personal valentine.

Sally LaPointe's Fall 2015 Collection Is Putting This Designer On The Map

Who's the next great fashion designer? We're on the lookout this New York Fashion Week for the lesser known or up-and-comers who are creating clothing and careers that are worthy of some praise... and closet space. While they aren't household names yet, we're so impressed with their skills that we're betting they will be soon. So, check out “The Fresh Faces of Fashion” for the scoop on the designers we believe are the next big thing.

If you don't know Sally LaPointe's name, it's time you memorize it. The Massachusetts-born, NYC-based designer is making waves in the fashion industry with her minimal and perfectly tailored collections. Her designs have been seen on the likes of Katy Perry, Kim Kardashian and Emily Blunt, and are sure to grace many more red carpets for years to come. We sat down with the designer to find out a little bit about herself and about her latest collection (which was inspired by the German modern dancer, Pina Bausch).

Here's what we found out:

HuffPost Style: Who is the girl you are designing for?

Sally LaPointe: We call our woman the dark beauty. She is this sophisticated modern woman who is still very feminine but she's got a little bit of an edge to her. And we also kind of throw around the word handsome, so she's not overly girlie or overly sexy -- she's got this kind of quiet allure to her, that's very attractive and handsome.

HPS: Do you prefer designing for fall or spring more?

SL: My favorite is fall. I personally like dressing best in the fall and winter time. I love layering, I love texture, warm fluffy sweaters and coats and scarves and all of that.

HPS: What's the one thing you would never wear?

SL: The one thing I would never wear... that's a tough one... I guess maybe, like too many colors at once. I will wear color but not too many at one time.

HPS: Who alive or deceased would you like to go on a shopping spree with?

SL: George Michael.

HPS: If you could see any celebrity in your designs, who would it be?

SL: Julianne Moore just continues to be like this flawless, amazing, inspirational woman. What attracts me the most to her is kind of just how she has been able to stay so classy and talented and strong, so I'm really attracted to that. She would be pretty top on my list right now.

HPS: If you had to wear one outfit for the rest of your life, what would it be?

SL: Black sweater, black jeans and some boots or sneakers.

HPS: What was the first piece of designer clothing you bought?

SL: I bought a pair of YSL boots. I was so proud of myself. I kept them forever, it was probably eight or nine years ago and I loved them.

HPS: If you had one day left to live in NYC, what would you do?

SL: I would probably go to my local bar, which is like a "Cheers" place for me. I know everyone in there, it's like my family and then I would probably go hit up all my favorite food spots. I love dumplings from Chinatown, I love pizza, so I'd make a little food tour after I hit the bar.

On opening day at Mercedes Benz Fashion Week, New York, Katie Holmes and Drake joined Nigel Barker, Catherine Giudici and Langley Fox Hemingway to view Desigual's Fall 2015 collection. Usual fixtures on the runway, Adriana Lima and Harley Viera Newton sat front row to watch fellow models Behati Prinsloo and Chantelle Winnie Harlow dance down the runway in signature styled floral skirts and cocoon coats.

True to form, Desigual made the abstract quite wearable. This season however, brought an enhanced level of production that would entice not only the eccentric, but the sophisticated as well as.

Be Mine: 6 Valentine's Day Gifts That Are Worth Committing Too

$

Need the perfect Valentine's Day gift? Welcome to the club. Truth be told, shopping for your significant other can be a daunting task for even the most capable of gift givers. Whether you're looking for a present for your main squeeze, indulging in a bromance (no judgement), keeping things strictly platonic, or waiting for the verdict to come in on your new beau, fret not because I've rounded up the best buys that are sure to make your sweetie wanna bring it in for the real thing.

First up, the boys. From the outdoorsy guy to the couch potato, the world traveler to the whiskey connoisseur (and everyone in between), I've handpicked the gifts that are guaranteed to make him swoon.

Oh and just a word of warning to the guys out there who receive socks on Valentine's day morning...unless you're her grandfather, you should go ahead and expect an awkward "it's not you, it's me," speech in your near future. Just sayin.

The World Traveler
Is your valentine a frequent traveler? Whether it be a swanky passport cover, a new camera to capture all his adventures, or a Rosetta stone package to teach him how to say " I love you" in a new language be sure to choose a gift that shows your significant other how much you love their sense of adventure.

The Outdoorsy Guy

Dear dude. Don't flake out but no matter how much of a "guy's guy" you are, at some point in your life, you'll have to find a balance between what your face needs and your personality can tolerate. Its about that time, trust me. This is where your lady comes in. Ladies, give your man the gift of skincare! After all, with all the time he's spending outdoors his skin needs to be pampered and nourished! Besides, his softened kissable face will be something you'll both enjoy long after Valentines day is over. You can thank me later.

The Couch Potato

Does your guy hold onto the channel changer as if it's the last box of doughnuts on Earth? From a sterling silver remote, a Crestron system, to blankets that beg for a snuggle fest, there's an endless array of options to give your man for Valentine's Day that will have him surfing the tube in style. Wanna kick things up a notch? Make him dinner and put on some of your sexiest lingerie. Or better yet, loose the lingerie. Either way, I can guarantee you'll finally get him off that couch. Am I right, or am I right?

Lets hear it for the girls...Don't worry ladies, I didn't forget about you. Since getting a gift for the lady in your life can come with insurmountable pressure, I'm here to help boys. After all, you don't want to settle for the usual flowers and chocolate. They're basic, and no one likes a basic dude. Looking for something practical yet from the heart? I've got just the tips for you.

The Girls Girl

Carol Channing famously coined the phrase "diamonds are a girl's best friend," in the Broadway production of Gentlemen Prefer Blonds. While I don't agree with the blonde statement (I'm clearly a brunette), I certainly won't be debating her on the diamonds. After all, diamonds are forever. "For eva eva..." Anyone else tempted to break out into a Kayne West rap right now? No? Just me? Alrighty then. I'll move on.

If you've been together forever, or if your just sure she's "the one" you can do no wrong when it comes to diamonds. Pair them with a bubble bath and a handwritten love note and you'll be everywhere but in the doghouse. As they say, go big or go home. Cant afford to splurge? Don't. If she loves you she will rock a piece of grass wrapped around her ring finger just as proudly as she would a glistening rock. If you go the grass route though, I'd suggest a solid love note, or a poem. A poem never hurt anybody.

The Class Act

Fine perfume is always a tasteful gift for Valentine's Day but picking the right scent can be tricky. This is where I can come in. After being sprayed by the department store spritzer girl in the hair, mouth, and eyes on one to many occasions, I finally decided to take matters into my own hands. The Verdict? Go for a perfume that leaves a subtle yet lasting impression. I'm fond of those that have a youthful, floral smell like the Juicy Couture one pictured above. Best of all guys? Every time she sprays this on her wrists, she'll be thinking of you. Can you say, winning?!

The Do Gooder

If you're surprising your altruistic Valentine with a romantic getaway (go you), why not get her a purse to keep her travel belongings in that looks as good as the good it does. I for one am extremely passionate about products with a purpose and conscious consumerism and always feel like the best gifts are those that give twice. Feel the same? Great! A wonderful option comes from Figue who created a limited edition Rhino Pouch to raise awareness of illegal poaching in Africa to support Rhinos Without Borders. With 30 percent of proceeds going directly to the initiative, you can spoil your girl all while showing her you support her efforts to make the world a better place.

Whatever your plans are this Valentine's Day, I've got one piece of advice: spread the love. Because, call me corny, but I think love is worth celebrating. After all, the one thing that turns the world from a lonely place to a wonderful one, is love, in any form.

So Happy Valentines Day to you and yours!

When Your Crush Texts You Back

2015-02-13-picstitch.jpg

When your crush starts to text you back, you'll realize what you are texting is probably just your own fantasy regardless of whatever else may ensue afterwards. Recently, a bunch of my friends have been sharing their commitment issues and befuddled thoughts of why their relationship aren't working out like they wish. Though I'm not a relationship expert by any means, listening to numerous stories that all seem to sound so similar, that is: it wasn't working, this person broke up with me, he's too busy, we never had sex, got me thinking about how screwed up dating can be when neither one is the priority.

As I thought about my friends' dating woes, I had an ah-ha moment! We are probably loving and dating out of our true marxist lover personalities. Alain De Botton, a Swiss philosopher and atheist based in the United Kingdom, first introduced this theory to me in his book "The Consolations of Philosophy." Alain's example of how love and marxism are intertwined was about a guy who was obsessed with a girl until he learned of her shoe choice and dumped her.

I became emotionally overwhelmed with being a marxist lover, so I chose to dismiss it to put my social approach at ease. But that's precisely when marxism reared its ugly head.

Me and this guy were both totally engrossed in our own narcissistic habits and, in the end, it probably ruined any hope for an us in the future. I was loosely dating Jason* for a few weeks when my attraction for him grew at a pace I wasn't able to constrain. We had met on normal grounds. Totally sober in the early summer days just when the sun was setting on a glass enclosed art gallery. You could say we backed into each other because we were looking at different paintings on the opposite ends of the room. From that moment, I fell deeply in-like with Jason. My thoughts took over me. I was vexed. There were many nights spent wishing on full moons, fantasizing about what life could be like with him in the first few days of meeting even though I knew very little about his whereabouts.

But I was sure he was perfect. Jason was the quintessentially charming Sex and the City type of guy. He was creative, handsome and a real gentleman who walked on the left side and offered me his coat when I refused to wear my own. I wouldn't say he'd carry my purse, but on special occasions a girl got lucky.

After a few months of feeling each other out, I was losing my patience with Jason regarding his inconsistencies and horrible communication skills. Jason was, like, allergic to the phone. Where the hell was he when I needed him on lonely nights? Many hours spent wondering what he was thinking, should I text him, would calling be better that ticked my anxiety level up ten notches. What started out to be a good track record soon went AWOL. Dating other guys in between couldn't drown out my cryptic ideologies of this guy and I wanted more every time we happened to be hanging out. But that was about to end when the relationship finally culminated into a dark argument in the brisk cold city air. "You will never see me again!" I quietly streaked with mascara tears on the edge of my eye sockets. "You wouldn't know where to find me!" He threw back. Hailing a cab and angrily stumbling in, I wanted to run away from the whole situation. He was a fool and I knew it. But as you would think, he was still alluring.

In whatever way to explain, I eventually did see Jason a few weeks after the meltdown. Seriously though, why did he have to materialize just when I happened to be visiting my favorite bar in Chinatown? I was so sure I'd never see his face again. But here we were, all dressed up at some fancy event, when the room parted and our eyes locked into a gaze that seemed to last forever. Jason broke eye-contact first with his actions that left me utterly dumbfounded. On top of seeing my worse enemy, I stumbled upon another side of Jason I didn't know existed and things suddenly started to feel like a French sitcom. Jason picked up his flip phone, and then revealed an iPhone that he thumbed with in tandem. In that moment, I stared in awe- and if I wasn't so egotistical myself, my jaw may have dropped from amazement. Despite the razor sharp IDGAF attitudes which were being projected from the both of us, this was definitely Breaking News to me. How could the guy that I have been obsessed with for months have two cell phones?! How could the nonchalance on communication be culminated into this? Little by little, disillusionment set in and those layers of my Jason quickly peeled away. The result of what was left, the real Jason, had me speechless. It was that moment you walk away from those you realize you have nothing in common with. Sorry I'm late; I didn't want to come anyways.

Marxist Lovers would subconsciously prefer that their dreams remain in the realm of fantasy, but my fantasy would come true over and over again, unfolding in the most random events. Fake and uninviting when the reality really set in. It was a nightmare. When two cell phones came into the situation, I began to doubt what I initially thought of as attraction. Was it the allure of not knowing Jason's whereabouts or was it the fact that I may have been overlooking something that was right in front of me? But again, the fantasy was too enticing.

Not everyone wants to be the couple who gets tapas on a Saturday night, but it's normal and safe! It's like meeting someone on vacation, going on dates, holding hands while walking through a carnival, eating sweet treats and kissing on a park bench. Suddenly, when you're on a plane back home, you realize what happened may not have been your actual reality, but it's what happens in the Notebook, and therefore it is very romantic.

So, finally, I can theoretically believe that Marxist lovers truly feel that their power over the perceived does not dominate reality. "You're in love with me, admit it," Jason said to me during a game of cat and mouse. Taunted again, I struggled for a response as equal. And yet I responded, "Yes, I am so in love with you," even though I unwittingly knew, I was fueling and clinging to my own fantasized feelings.

Amy Schumer on the guy who's obsessed with her perm to put this into perspective.

How to Curl Your Hair With a Flat Iron

$

Curling your hair with a flat iron sounds like a contradiction, doesn't it? Why would you do such a thing when a curling iron is meant to curl the hair? I mean, the word 'curl' is in the tool's name for crying out loud. The answer is this: a flat iron provides a different type of curl than a curling iron does. You can create a style with flat, smooth pieces that transition into curled or waved pieces. You're also able to vary the texture with a flat iron to give a purposefully imperfect look to your do, one that is messy-cute and unkempt-sexy.

Learning how to curl with a flat iron can be tricky though and does take time to get used to. It's a technique that most need to practice to get right. In this post, I will show you how to do it and give you some tricks and tips along the way!

Step 1: Prep your hair with heat protectant. As mentioned in an earlier post, I prefer to use CHI Silk Infusion, but there are approximately five million other products you can choose to use.

Step 2: Take a small section of hair, and insert it into your flat iron. Your sections can vary in size for a more natural, beautifully imperfect look -- this is up to you. You may also decide where you would like your curl to start and can place your flat iron accordingly.

2015-02-13-flatiron1.jpg

Step 3: Twist your wrist, (the one holding the flat iron :)), about a half-turn, then pull, then twist again, then pull. Keep repeating this until you reach the end of your hair. For a more beachy feel, keep the very ends of your hair out of the iron.

2015-02-13-flatiron3.jpg

Step 3 (Alternative): Twist and pull just as Step 3 indicated, but for a tighter, more curly curl, twist the mid-shaft to ends around the entire iron mimicking what you would do with a curling iron. The picture below shows the beginning of this technique; simply continue wrapping the hair around your iron.

2015-02-13-flatiron5.jpg

Step 4: Continue with Step 3 (either version) throughout your entire head of hair. For more variation and imperfection with your style, you may opt to switch the direction of your curls, vary the section size, and begin the curls at different parts of your sections. You may want to change the direction of your curls near your face, (depending on the side), if you wish to have them sweep away from your face. Again, this is a personal preference that is entirely up to you.

Step 5: Comb your fingers through to break up the curls. Take your hands and shake your hair out. Apply a light wax or pomade through your ends to give a more pliable texture. I love Aveda's wax; it's lightweight and smells delicious. You can also use the pomade to help mold your curls.

Step 6 (optional): Tease/backcomb your hair for added volume. See my post "How to Pump Up the Volume of Your Hair" for a detailed tutorial.

Here are variations on a curl that I achieved using the flat iron:

Looser curl, ends undone:
2015-02-13-flatiron2.jpg

Tighter curl, side view: 2015-02-13-flatiron7.jpg

Tighter curl, other side view: 2015-02-13-flatirong6.jpg

Tighter curl, front view: 2015-02-13-flatiron8.jpg

Looser curl, sporadic pieces on shorter hair, (Yes, I just chopped my hair off.): 2015-02-13-flatiron.jpg

Keep in mind that using the flat iron to curl is a technique that takes some time and practice, so be patient with yourself. This technique is meant to be sexy, creative, and flirty, so just have fun with it! Now, it's your turn to try it out.

This Valentine's Day -- I Love You, But...

$

A lot is written and advertised about women's self-image and how damaging it is to women and girls of all ages. And I don't doubt it. Presenting an ideal that not all can live up to is a form of cruelty masked as billion dollar businesses that will never deliver on those promises but we hop on the treadmill anyway.

And by the way, I'm not talking about a real treadmill, because that will lead to a physical change if done properly and with discipline. I'm talking about the treadmills we all get on for destinations unknown that rarely deliver.

With Valentine's Day around the corner I'm reminded by a line I heard once that "expectations are premeditated resentments." Because invariably, the world, and specifically our significant others, rarely live up to the expectations placed upon them by us. And then we burn with indignation into the night when they don't. St. Valentine was a prisoner who sent his love light out into the vast expanse through the bars of his cell, hoping those who cared about him would "see it" and "feel it." That's not what this day has become in the ensuing millennia.

So here's what I propose for me and my girlfriend this Valentine's Day:

1. I solemnly vow to accept whatever happens on that day as an expression of your love for me and I for you, regardless of the wrappings and trappings of how it all happens.

2. I won't place any expectations on you outside of my control or outside of yours.

3. I won't form a resentment for anything I thought should or shouldn't happen February 14. It's just another day albeit loaded with anticipation and fraught with peril. But it needn't be.

Nothing on this day will be about anything other than "I love you just the way you are". If you like candy, I get you a grab bag full. If you like flowers, I get you persimmons, if you like clothes, I get you a gift card to your favorite store, if you like to be nearly naked around the house, I get you something sexy and skimpy from Victoria's Secret. It's about YOU. Not about ME. (Well, maybe the Victoria's Secret gift is a little about me.)

And I know wherefrom I speak. When my hair started falling out in my 20s I was pretty freaked out. And it didn't help that a few crazy cruel girlfriends remarked on it. When a man loses his hair, it's the dictionary definition of "out of my control" because hair signifies an almost pre-pubescent youth ideal. Not unlike what women go through when 15-year old girls grace the covers of women's magazines! It's almost like asking young men and women not to grow up and let their bodies express what that age actually looks like. And the absurdity that it should it be masked or changed. The Pope yesterday said that cosmetic surgery is like a modern-day secular Burqa -- with all the societal burdens that implies -- and for once, I can't say I disagree with him.

Men's perceived inadequacies bear relevance -- and to some degree equivalence -- to what women suffer through, perhaps just not as extremely. Breast size for women could equate with member size for men; heavyset men and women are both marginalized almost to the point of near-invisibility by a beauty-obsessed society; and for every woman looking to cosmetics to change the look of what is probably a perfectly fine face, there are legions of men have sought out toupees, topical creams, pills, hair plugs and hats for a world that sent them messages that having hair on one's head is preferable to not. It's interesting that the Ashley Graham video celebrating her plus-size beauty for Curves In Bikinis and breaking barriers with the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue association; instead engaged in a sort-of reverse sexism by showing ripped handsome men with idealized bodies, faces, and full heads of hair and somehow the same evolved thinking that all kinds of bodies are sexy in that spot didn't seem to apply to the men.

This Valentine's Day I'm going to say "I love you just the way you are" and mean it. And I sure hope she thinks so too. And I say that without any expectations.

How Olivia Pope Has Redefined Leadership for Young Women

Kerry Washington's InStyle cover is set to hit stores Friday, but the yet to be released issue has already generated quite a bit of debate. Washington's visibly lighter appearance on the cover has upset a number of super fans, even prompting a response from the magazine and Washington herself.

But in the pages behind the controversial cover, Washington gives her take on her character's influence on women.

In the issue, the 38-year-old actress explains to InStyle the differences between her personal red-carpet fashion choices to that of Olivia Pope's. Over the years, Washington's award-show wardrobe has consisted of daring colors, patterns and cuts. Most notably a crop top ensemble she donned while pregnant for the 2014 Screen Actors Guild Awards. As for Pope, Washington said, she "sticks to a more neutral palette in pastels by designers like Dior, Ferragamo and Escada." Fashion choices, which have become the inspiration for The Limited's 'Scandal' collection.

"Olivia's had a huge influence" Washington continued. In fact, she explained, "After the first couple of episodes aired, people started posting on Twitter things like 'I have a job interview today, and I'm trying to dress like Olivia Pope.'" And why wouldn't women want to channel Olivia Pope's fierce style to help land that prospective job? Pope is known for her attention commanding designer power suits, classic cardigans and detailed blouses. Her wardrobe has become the subject of articles, Pinterest boards, and blogs viewed by women who want to duplicate her flawless style in their line of work.

The considerable amount of interest shown by fans in Pope's wardrobe continues as Washington once again teams up with The Limited for the Spring "Scandal" collection. But it's not just her ensembles the young women, who tune in every Thursday with their glass of wine in hand, admire. It's the confidence, assertiveness and strength she projects.

"The Olivia Pope Affect"

Scandal's creator Shonda Rhimes has been credited for "breaking barriers" for casting the first black female to play a lead role on network television in 40 years. Washington plays a well-educated, complex, career-driven political fixer that defies race and gender stereotypes.

Some question if the show's success is an indicator that we are in a post-racial television era. But the "Olivia Pope Affect" doesn't stop there. The character has become a cultural icon and role model for women of all color. In a time where women are the breadwinners in nearly half of American households and 61% of millennial women aspire to one day hold a managerial position, Pope has become the quintessential career women.

Women want to dress like her, have her job and "handle" life's everyday challenges just like her. And it wasn't limited to the first couple of episodes either. Young women regularly post on social media their desires to channel Pope for prospective job interviews or in their current roles.

Pope's impeccable problem solving skills, assertiveness and unapologetic demeanor are traits that attribute to her success as a fixer. However, these qualities are typically not viewed positively when displayed by women. Yet, she is revered by those around her. The absence of the stigmas, associated with women in leadership, from the show allows ambitious female viewers to embrace their own leadership traits without the fear of sacrificing their likeability.

Over the years, women have made considerable progress in the workplace but they still don't compare when it comes to holding top managerial positions. Yes she is fictional, but for 60-minutes out of the week Pope inspires millions, who admire her ability to take command and yield fast result all while remaining composed, to do the same in their careers.

The character Olivia Pope is not without flaws. Her affair with a married man who happens to be the President of the United States is questionable at the least. But when it comes to her career, the show's protagonist is driven, efficient and powerful with achievements ranging from CEO of Pope & Associates to being a former White House advisor. So despite the moral gray area that is her love life, Pope is a transformative character that has played a significant role in defying traditional depictions of women on network television.

How One Designer Is Using 'Role Models Not Runway Models' To Empower Women

While New York Fashion Week featured many famous faces during its opening night on Feb. 12, it was the lesser-known ones that may have made the biggest impact.

Designer Carrie Hammer's runway show "Role Models Not Runway Models" was a highlight of NYFW for the second year in a row. "Role Models Not Runway Models" featured female CEOs, writers, actresses and entrepreneurs.

"I think it's important that women understand that beauty comes from power, personality, and accomplishments," Hammer said. "The women we put on the runway are all at the top of their respective fields."

The models included Brandthropologie CEO Billee Howard, Nexus founder Rachel Cohen Gerrol, senior editor of Bustle.com Marie Ospina and Director of Public Affairs at Coca-Cola Missy Owens.

In 2014, Hammer's show featured the first model in a wheelchair in NYFW and this year she included "American Horror Story" actress Jamie Brewer, the first model with Down syndrome to walk the runway.

"I think this challenges what we've been seeing for way too long. Uniformity. It's time to see not just diversity -- but reality," Hammer said.

Tanya Taylor's Fall 2015 Collection Is Perfect For Michelle Obama And Anyone Looking To Turn Heads

TANYA TAYLOR

We first fell in love with Tanya Taylor last summer after Michelle Obama stepped out in one of the designer's ultra-feminine and eye-catching creations. Since then we've spotted Taylor's eponymous collection on a slew of stars, including Beyoncé, Reese Witherspoon and Emily Blunt. If you need more proof of the 28-year-old's sartorial prowess, consider the fact that she was a 2014 CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund finalist. Taylor is poised to become a major figure in the fashion world.

We quickly caught up with the Toronto-born designer on Friday before her Fall 2015 runway show and talked dressing the first lady, designing with bold prints and fishing! Check it out...

HuffPost Style: We hear this collection was inspired by a fishing lure. Very cool! Do you fish?

TT: I don't, but I have friends that do! There is just something about fishing. A confident woman fishes. My grandfather and grandmother always did -- but there is something about the lure specifically, outside the actual sport that has this sharpness and has a quirky beauty to it and that is what I wanted to represent in the collection.

HPS: Your prints are always so stunning. A lot of New York designers shy away from bold prints -- where does your confidence in working with them come from?

TT: I grew up wearing prints and I've never been scared of them. I think that fashion should be expressive -- and for me I express myself in color and print, so it's very natural. But there's a solid dress in the collection, which is totally new for us -- but it's one of my favorites in the show. We're trying to add in more solids.

HPS: Did you have Michelle Obama in mind when designing any of the dresses in the collection?

TT: Yes! This one (points to apricot hued blouse and skirt on run-of-show board. See: photo #1 below) and this one (points to printed spaghetti-strapped dress on run-of-show board. See: photo #2 below)!

HPS: Who would be seated in your dream front row?

TT: Emma Stone. I like funny girls. I like girls that are lighthearted and fun. The two girls I brought to the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund Dinner were Gillian Jacobs and Jenny Slate and they're both comedians and awesome. I love them! And they're not at all afraid to speak their minds and they're confident. Emma Stone definitely embodies that as well.

HPS: What are you doing immediately after the show is over?

TT: We all go to Tortilla Flats next door and we have a margarita and we try to charge our phones so we can follow Instagram and keep up on everything. But, we just relax.

If you thought nail art was just a fad, we hate to break it to you, but crazy cool nail designs are still "in."

During New York Fashion Week Fall 2015, nail artists Miss Pop and Casey Herman blew our minds with the multi-colored, matte and metallic manis at Rachel Antonoff, Degen, Marissa Webb and Novis.

The highly intricate, hand-painted nail art flowed seamlessly with the heavy textures and rich hues found in the fall collections. And they're proof that what you wear on your nails is just as much a conversation starter as the clothes you wear.

In anticipation of the nail art takeover at Fashion Week, HuffPost Style teamed up with the uber-talented manicurists at Vanity Projects to create custom nail art designs based on our personality-filled Polyvore sets.

Photos Of Couples Married 50 Years And More Capture The Beauty Of Longtime Love

When photographer Tracey Buyce's mom died in 2007, her parents had been married for 46 years. In 2011, she lost her father too.

Buyce's parents on their wedding day.

Inspired by her parents' long marriage, the Saratoga Springs, New York-based photog embarked on an ongoing photo project in 2014. She started a contest on her blog, asking people to nominate couples who had been married 40 years or more. If chosen, the couple received a free photo session, prints and a flash drive of the images.

"This project began as a way to stay connected to them and honor their memory," Buyce told The Huffington Post.

So far, she has featured five couples -- Henry and Jeanette, married 53 years; Russ and Elinor, married 63 years; Gloria and Walter, married 65 years; Norbert and Mary, married 71 years; and Martha and George, married 70 years until George's death in Fall 2014.

"One thing all of these couples had in common was a quiet comfort between them," Buyce said.

The photographer opened up to HuffPost Weddings about how her mom and dad's marriage has influenced her and her work.

I have learned how to truly love, without conditions, from my parents. What has likely inspired me most about my own parents' marriage was their uncompromising devotion and deep commitment to each other. My mom and dad's marriage endured some incredibly painful times throughout its 46 years. Early on, they lost their 2-year-old son Brian to leukemia. Shortly after, Mom turned to drinking and suffered from alcoholism for many years. Those who knew Mom throughout her sometimes troubled life say she never fully recovered from the loss our family experienced. My dad stood faithfully by her through the ugly years of drinking, her recovery from that insidious disease, and her future years of sobriety.

To me, loving someone is loving them through both the best and the worst of times, as well as being able to see the good in that person when they are unable to see it in themselves. A true marriage is about believing in one another and having faith that your love will endure forever. The happy times are easy, it's persevering through the challenging times that creates longevity and growth in a marriage. I miss my parents every day and am deeply thankful for their true love.

Buyce has learned a lot from the couples she's photographed as well. "Marriage is complex, full of ups and downs and joys and sorrows," she told HuffPost Weddings. "Marriage is your own little universe that just the two of you create."

Meet the rest of the inspiring couples below.

Why Misha Nonoo Is The Ultimate Woman's Woman At Fashion Week

$

New York Fashion Week is not typically considered an oasis of calm. You'd be hard pressed to find a designer, especially one whose show is in 24 hours, who will cut out a chunk of their time to, well, do anything besides plan. Misha Nonoo, one of the designers in the 2015 Swarovski Collective (which is celebrating its 15th year of supporting and collaborating with emerging designers), is an exception to that rule.

It's with that down-to-earth attitude (the models in her show this season did their own hair, for example) and an understated aesthetic that Nonoo goes about not only designing but living her life, too. And it's working in a big way. The brand that started out with just coats now includes eveningwear, just launched e-commerce on its website and is loved by some major power players in the industry.

HuffPost Style chatted with the designer about the inspiration for her new collection, the importance of understanding how to dress a woman and the qualms of moving to a new neighborhood.

On what her Fall/Winter 2015 inspiration has to do with self-love:

"The inspiration this season was an incredible Tracey Emin show I saw in London called 'The Last Great Adventure Is You.' It was particularly amazing and moving to me, I think, as a woman, because her whole philosophy behind it was almost an epiphany of love and the self. She started out the project thinking it would be about somebody else, whether that was a family member, or a lover or something like that, but realized after creating the show that it's actually about herself. There's this unbelievable sense of optimism about that message. I think being comfortable and confident in yourself really the first step as a woman toward attracting anything else in your life."

misha nonoo
On the women she admires:

"Women who have the balance of the fragility and the strength. They're often mothers, wives. Stella McCartney, who has four children, is a huge creative force in the fashion industry and is a warrior for the environment. For me it's about women who are very multifaceted."

On diversity in the fashion industry:

"It's very important to me. I originally didn't see enough African-American girls, I didn't see enough Asian girls on my board. I said to my casting director, 'Where are the people who are racially diverse?' We don't just live in a one-dimensional world, where everyone is blonde or brunette and Caucasian. Women come in all different shapes and sizes, and that variation is what makes each individual so beautiful."

On dressing women:

"A friend of ours is a manager for a model who they call plus size. That's the amazing thing to me -- the most famous models who are supposedly plus size are a size 8/10/12. That really is not plus size. I'm slender, but I have big boobs and I have a bum. I understand all of those things. I think it's important as a designer to take those assets into account when you're dressing someone for every day."

misha nonoo

On the right way to find a mentor:

"Everything in life is a two-way street. Nowadays everyone is just looking for a mentor, when in fact, you have to excel in a field, and then you can go to someone with a great question, which could be the beginning of a great relationship. The best mentor relationships are when you're both learning from each other in some way. My mentors have definitely given me more than I give them [laughs], but it is a two-way street."

On the advice she carries with her at all times:

"Happiness is not something you just wake up and have, it's kind of a lifelong journey. People just think about being successful, but it takes a lot of hard work and effort. You're not just successful, you've gotta enjoy the journey of getting there. That's how you don't give up."

On creative freedom and Swarovski:

"We're working with everything in black. I wanted to work more with a textural feel than something that was so obvious. It's very clear because you can see the crystals sparkle in the light, but they are just a beautiful black, matte color. That's my aesthetic; it's very minimal, it's clean. Swarovski doesn't ask you to do something their way, they ask you to do it your way. They have a great understanding of that."

evening wear

On moving to a new neighborhood:

"I've been living in my current apartment for 18 months, and I just now realized there is an express subway stop much, much closer than the one I've been going to all this time."
