Nicole "Snooki" Polizzi looked amazing at ESPN The Party's event at Basketball City in New York last night (Feb.2). The reality star took to the red carpet in a cut out mini dress alongside stars like Sherri Shepherd, Ice T and Robin Thicke, where she told the New Jersey Star-Ledger that she thinks New York and New Jersey are "kind of the same thing."

Keep doing what you're doing, Snooki.

Princess Charlene's Side-Swept Waves Is Her Best Short Hairstyle... So Far (PHOTOS)

We may never be royals, but Princess Charlene has convinced us that we have a better chance of looking like one.

The posh Princess of Monaco attended the Monte-Carlo Boxing Bonanza on Saturday sporting side-swept waves. You're probably wondering how she was able to pull off such a look with her short blonde strands, but she managed to do so effortlessly.

Charlene styled her crop into a textured and tousled hairstyle, taking advantage of those slightly longer pieces at the front. The results: Winter beachy waves that balanced her elegant makeup and drop earrings.

How To Make Your Home Feel Like A Luxe Ski Lodge

$

When we escape our homes for the winter season, it's usually to head to the mountains and hit the slopes. And the best part of it all? Snuggling up with a blanket in the lodge. But that doesn't have to end with a return trip home -- even the most luxe ski lodges have some decor elements in common, and its those exact things that you can bring back with you for the coziest transformation your home has seen yet.

1. Forget the TV, a fireplace is the ultimate focal point. Giving structure to a room by establishing a focal point is always a great idea, but using a cozy fire instead of technology to do so is an even better idea.
ski lodge fireplace

2. Never underestimate the value of a view. What's better than gathering by the fire? Looking out over an incredible panorama. Ski lodges have a way of framing the outside world in a romantically gorgeous way through picture windows and carefully-positioned patios. While that might involve a bit too much in the way of modifying your home, you can simply open the blinds once in a while.
ski lodge inside

3. Art isn't the only thing you can hang on walls. Whether it be sleds and snowshoes or trophies from ski competitions past, using your walls for something a bit more untraditional makes a strong statement.
ski lodge wall

4. Don't let exposed brick have all the fun. We've all heard how fabulous an exposed brick wall can be, but we happen to think natural stone or rustic wood does the trick just as well, if not better. Don't have one? Join the club. Incorporating natural elements, like incredible stones or wood cross-cuts to use as an alternative centerpiece, will do the trick.

5. A little touch of vintage or history goes a long way. Sentimental decor -- think old photos, vintage signs and artwork -- creates a cozy vibe.

6. Porches and fire pits aren't just a warm weather thing. We're done letting summer have all the fun with these additions -- lighting an outdoor fire and roasting s'mores might just be even better when you're wrapped in a blanket and watching the snow fall.

7. Texture is essential. From classic wool blankets to chic faux fur throws, layering these elements will instantly take you to a cabin in the Alps.

8. Bring some warmth with lighting and palette. Have you ever been to a ski lodge that didn't feel cozy? That's because it's all about earth tones and dimmed, yellow glows.
ski lodge lighting

9. Celebrate architectural elements. Exposed beams, wood trim and built-ins should be featured, not obscured.

10. Focus on comfort From a gathering-centered layout to having hot-chocolate and schnapps on hand at all times, these places know what they're design for -- a snug and intimate escape from winter.

'SNL' Knows Your Valentine's Day Will Probably Involve 'Some Dumb Little Thing from CVS'

Whether or not you care about Valentine's Day, we can all agree that a stuffed bear dressed like a bee or a box of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle chocolates does not a Valentine's Day gift make.

"Saturday Night Live" calls out all the last minute gift buyers it in this CVS commercial parody that nails the drug store chain's less-than-romantic V-Day merchandise.

And ladies, if your S.O. comes home with an 80% off Christmas stocking on any occasion, it might be time to give him the boot. Just sayin'.

James Marsden Would Beat Up His 'Anchorman 2' Character

$

James Marsden had an exciting 2013: finishing his arc as Criss on "30 Rock," portraying John F. Kennedy in "Lee Daniels' The Butler" and starring opposite Will Ferrell as Jack Lime in "Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues." From the looks of it, 2014 is set to propel him further into the spotlight -- at least when it comes to grooming. The Huffington Post met up with Marsden at Sharps Barber and Shop in Le Parker Meridien hotel on on Jan. 31 to discuss his partnership with Old Spice (which is to help launch the company's new hair care and styling products) as well as his numerous upcoming projects.

Hi, James, it's great to meet you.
Nice to meet you, as well. Can I get you anything? A little shave?

That would actually be very nice.
I'm just going to keep going with the dumb jokes. Is it going to bother you if I just have this running during the audio? [Turns faucet on.]

Well, we probably won't get many good quotes.
That's no good. [Turns faucet off.]

Not at all. So, why did you partner up with Old Spice?
I've been a fan of the brand for a long time, and I love what they have been doing recently with their ads. They invited me to come test out some of their new hair products. I thought it would be cool, and I get to check out the Super Bowl while I'm here in New York.

What was one the funniest, or one of your favorite moments from filming "Anchorman 2"?
Oof ... there was a lot of funny stuff that ended up happening spontaneously that didn't make the movie, but I don't want to spoil it for people, because it will probably be on the DVD. I mean, every day with those guys, you know, you spent 20 percent of the time doing what was scripted, and 80 percent doing improv. It was great because there were no real boundaries; you had free reign to come up with whatever you wanted to come up with. There were too many to count, it's hard for me to name one specifically.

You have a number of films coming up this year. You have "Endangered" -- which reminds me of "The Edge" with Alec Baldwin and Anthony Hopkins -- "Walk of Shame," "The Best of Me," "The Loft." Is there any film you are most excited for it to come out?
I'm looking forward to this Vince Vaughn movie I just did called "Business Trip." They're changing the title, but Steve Conrad wrote the script. He's a really great screenwriter [who wrote "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty"], and definitely a favorite of mine. Also, this other movie with Kristen Wiig, "Welcome to Me."

In that movie you and Will Ferrell are back together, right?
Well, yes and no. He's producing it. I don't think he is in it. If he did, he came in for a very small cameo.

Just in the films coming out next year you've got comedy, romance, thriller, drama and action. How important is it to you to diversify your parts?
I don't know if it is as important as it is interesting. I think it's more important from the actor's perspective to challenge yourself in different ways, and not in a show-off-y kind of way. One of the great liberations of being an actor is that you are afforded opportunities to play different characters, and jump from one genre to another. I'm of the school of thought that if it's more interesting for you, then hopefully it should be more interesting for the audience.

Do you think it is easier for actors to get comfortable and kind of just sit in one genre?
I think you can get comfortable. My thing, you know, was that I never thought I was particularly great at just one thing. I wasn't great at everything, I was just okay at a lot of stuff, and then got better at a lot of stuff. I kind of see myself more as a character actor, I guess.

Out of any roles from your past, which one would you be best friends with, and which one would you beat up?
Umm, I don't know, I think they've all been pretty good guys. Well, Jack Lime from "Anchorman 2" you'd probably want to kick the crap out of. He's a smug, arrogant guy. Fun to play, but would also be fun to step outside with. As for best friends, I don't know. Oscar from "Death at a Funeral" is at the funeral on acid, so it'd probably be pretty fun to party with that guy.

What about Rex from "Sex Drive"?
Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah! Good call on that one, I forgot about him. I'm getting to that age where you start to forget about your credits. He'd definitely be a lot of fun.

Can we take a selfie together?

Functional Fashion at Kent State University

$

While Kent State University is known for its stellar fashion programs (one of the primary reasons why I chose to attend school here), it isn't exactly located in a part of the country that one would consider a fashion haven. The cute, small-town Ohio vibe that one gets from simply meandering around downtown Kent is vastly different than the sleek and busy atmosphere of, say, Manhattan. And don't get me wrong -- it is by no means a bad kind of different. Although the school is large, there's just a certain ease and hip nonchalance that rests in our campus's atmosphere and, ultimately, the style of our students.

So what exactly does the typical Kent State student wear on the regular? It's impossible to give an exact answer to this question without spending hours on it (keep in mind we have almost 30,000 students, which means almost 30,000 personal styles), so let me paint a picture of what you might observe style-wise on a walk through the campus: While traversing the brick esplanade that weaves through KSU, you'll be sure to see lots of skinny jeans on girls and guys alike, a few girls sporting their favorite pairs of perfectly worn-in combat boots, scarves galore, definitely some beanies, a surprising number of skirts (even on the coldest days) and maybe a couple of those "I slept in and nearly missed my 7:45 a.m. class, so I just threw on these sweatpants and booked it" outfits. There are also always a few girls ambitious enough to tackle high heels for their campus commutes, and I've recently noticed that bow ties seem to be taking off with the fellows of KSU (I spotted two the other day).

As you can hopefully now tell, when it comes to surveying KSU's overall style, you're bound to get a little bit of everything. There's a distinct and unique attention to personal style that is apparent in almost every student you will encounter. However, different tastes mixed with the much needed functionality for our expansive Ohio campus creates a united sense of effortlessness amongst our students' looks.

A wonderful example of this concept can be found in this Fashionista. It's clear from her white crocheted top, lilac cardigan and skinny jeans that the base of her outfit journeyed along a soft and feminine route. When she added her army jacket, oversized infinity scarf and black boots paired with thick gray socks, her look became suitable for the campus and its current winter weather. The final touches kept the look perfectly practical while also adding a juxtaposing laid-back grunge element to the original girly outfit. She managed to seamlessly blend different elements to keep for a functional college look and still stay true to the fashion image she wished to convey.

It's easy to come to Northeastern Ohio with unclear expectations as to what a large number of twenty-somethings can offer fashion-wise, but each student truly has a strong direction for his or her personal style. Whether they fully realize it or not, all of the students at Kent State University are Fashionistas/os that are on a constant mission to prove that collegiate fashion doesn't have to sacrifice function.

Cassandra Neely is a sophomore majoring in Fashion Merchandising with a minor in Fashion Media at Kent State University. She's a self-proclaimed fashion enthusiast with a deep appreciation for the written word and a great pair of ankle boots. When she's not documenting the style of her peers for CollegeFashionista, you can usually find her mapping out her next creative endeavors with her nose in a book and a large cup of coffee in hand.

Vanity Fair's 2014 Hollywood Issue Features Lupita Nyong'o, Julia Roberts And More

A mix of seasoned actors and industry newcomers grace the cover of Vanity Fair's 20th annual Hollywood issue. The three-panel foldout boasts Oscar nominees Julia Roberts ("August: Osage County"), Jared Leto ("Dallas Buyers Club"), Lupita Nyong'o and Chiwetel Ejiofor ("12 Years a Slave"), as well as George Clooney ("Gravity"), Margot Robbie ("The Wolf of Wall Street"), Michael B. Jordan ("Fruitvale Station"), Brie Larson ("Short Term 12"), Chadwick Boseman ("42"), Lea Seydoux ("Blue is the Warmest Color"), and Idris Elba and Naomi Harris ("Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom").

2014's Hollywood issue is also notably more diverse than previous years. This year's cover features six black actors, compared to last year's cover photo of Bradley Cooper, Emma Stone and Ben Affleck.

Shot by famed celebrity photographer Annie Leibovitz, the cover photo has a crisp, Old Hollywood aesthetic -- women in flowing gowns and men in polished black suits. Julia Roberts breaks the female mold, however, wearing a black blazer and fishnets, happily perched on Elba's lap. (Channeling Erin Brockovich for another Oscar win, perhaps?)

This issue of Vanity Fair will be available in New York and Los Angeles, as well as on the iPhone, iPad, Nook and Kindle on Feb. 7. Look for it on national newsstands and in audio form on Feb. 11.

Blogger Lindsay Bottos Is Using Her Internet Haters' Own Words To Fight Back

$

In case you require proof that the Internet is a hostile place for women, look no further than Lindsay Bottos' Tumblr.

The 21-year-old artist and student, tired of the vitriolic anonymous comments she received about her looks, artwork and personal life, decided to do something about it.

lindsay bottos

Bottos is working on a series of images combining the harsh comments posted on her blog with self-portraits. The first set of images, published on her Tumblr on Jan. 26, has already been reblogged over 98,000 times.

lindsay bottos

In her initial Tumblr post, Bottos explained why she started the project:
I get tons of anonymous messages like this every day and while this isn’t unique to women, the content of the messages and the frequency in which I get them are definitely related to my gender. I almost exclusively get them after I post selfies. The authority people feel they have to share their opinion on my appearance is something myself and many other girls online deal with daily.

lindsay bottos

Bottos makes sure that the photograph and the comment make sense together; for example an image showing her body hair will be paired with a comment criticizing her decision not to shave.

"I picked the messages by subject matter," she told BuzzFeed. "They reference my tattoos, or face, or weight, or body hair. I wanted them to represent the scope of the messages I get.”

lindsay bottos

Bottos considers the series a work-in-progress, and plans to continue collecting and screencapping the anonymous comments she receives to use in the project.

"The feedback I've gotten has been overwhelmingly encouraging and I'm really excited to keep working with my ideas and evolving my work," she told The Huffington Post in an email.

lindsay bottos

Bottos is a welcome voice in the larger conversation about how women are treated on the Internet. In a Jan. 6 piece for Pacific Standard magazine, Amanda Hess shared her own experiences of receiving rape and death threats from online commenters, and revealed that women are much more likely to report online harassment and stalking than men. She also dismissed the claim that such threats are "harmless":
Threats of rape, death, and stalking can overpower our emotional bandwidth, take up our time, and cost us money through legal fees, online protection services, and missed wages... As the Internet becomes increasingly central to the human experience, the ability of women to live and work freely online will be shaped, and too often limited, by the technology companies that host these threats, the constellation of local and federal law enforcement officers who investigate them, and the popular commentators who dismiss them—all arenas that remain dominated by men, many of whom have little personal understanding of what women face online every day.

Some men have seen first-hand the vitriol women face online -- a notable example is Conor Friedersdorf, a staff writer at The Atlantic. In a Jan. 7 piece, Friedersdorf recalled the "intensely personal missives of hyper-sexualized hate" he read while managing the emails of writer Megan McArdle during a guest-blogging stint. He called for readers to "stop passively accepting behavior towards women (or any person) that wouldn't be tolerated anywhere in offline life."

Passive acceptance is the exact opposite of Lindsay Bottos' attitude when it comes to this project -- and that's why we love it so much.

Kim Kardashian's Vogue Cover Rumors Are A Rollercoaster of Emotions

Another day, another Kim Kardashian/Kanye West rumor.

The Internet started buzzing almost immediately Sunday night after Jezebel reported that Kanye had finally convinced his sort-of BFF Anna Wintour to feature his fiancée on the cover of Vogue.

'Ye's supposed campaign, which include accusations of him causing all kinds of havoc, including bashing Lena Dunham and using photos of baby North as bait, it has become hard to tell what's true and what is just being used to stir the pot.

What we do know is that everyone has an opinion about Kim K. potentially receiving one of the highest honors that exist in the fashion world. Fans (and some non-fans) took to Twitter Monday to express their excitement (and) disappointment in the potential shoot. One user even tweeted that the rumor must be "a sign of the apocalypse."

The report, which Jezebel credits to a "well-placed source," claimed Kim was being photographed in Los Angeles Sunday night, however, US Weekly reported Monday that the rumor is false. Neither Kim nor Vogue has made an official statement, but we're going to go ahead and guess that for now, it's not happening. We wouldn't be surprised to eventually see the curvy reality queen land the prestigious cover, though.

We'll all just have to wait (with bated breath!) to find out. In the meantime, we can debate more important things, like whether or not Kim should have dyed her hair back to brown.

The very stylish couple:

Color Matters: Choosing the Correct Eye Shadow

$
0
0
I remember when I first started wearing eye shadow I had no idea what I was doing. I couldn't quite figure out what colors matched and look good together. Being completely overwhelmed at a makeup counter is a feeling I am all too familiar with. I remember blending so many colors together that it would look like a blob of brown mush. Makeup artistry can be a tricky bastard these days. Over the years, I have learned some practical guidance that is very important when applying eye shadow. This guidance is called color theory.

Colors are defined as primary, secondary or tertiary. Primary colors are those that create every color in the spectrum: red, yellow and blue. Secondary colors are made by combining equal proportions of two of the primary colors: violet (red and blue), green (blue and yellow), and orange (yellow and red). Tertiary colors are made by mixing a primary color and its adjacent secondary color in equal proportions (red-orange, yellow-orange, yellow-green, blue-green, blue-violet, and red-violet). Sounds confusing, but all you need is a color wheel to break it down for you. Below is a picture of the pocket color wheel I always keep with me in my makeup kit and bring with me to my clients:

2014-01-28-IMG_0113.jpg

2014-01-28-IMG_9140.jpg

Complementary colors are directly opposite each other on the color wheel (e.g., blue and orange, or violet and yellow) and generally what I use when picking two colors for eye shadow. When mixed together, complimentary colors will cancel each other out and create a brown or grey color; however, when put side by side, these colors seem brighter and more vibrant, giving a greater contrast to your look. Normally you want to choose your eye shadows to complement your eye color. This is why blue eye shadow looks great with brown eyes, or purple eye shadow fits so well with green eyes.

Just a few more things to know before you get started:

1. Combining a primary color (blue) with a secondary color (violet) can create some especially bold looks.

2. Using colors that are next to each other on the color wheel (violet and red-violet) will help you create a harmonious ombré effect when placed side by side.

3. The color wheel is there to help guide you through the color selection process. There are no rules!

You can find books out there that will give you hard and fast rules on which colors go together, but I don't believe in makeup rules. I wear whatever makes me feel good and best brings out my personality. I suggest you do too. Play around with the color wheel and decide what combinations you like best for yourself. Don't let a book tell you what's right and wrong. My favorite makeup artist, Kevyn Aucoin, always said that "mistakes" often turn out to be exciting revelations. I hope you find the color wheel useful in discovering the right matches for not only your skin tone and eye color, but your personality as well. Now go on and color with confidence!

Adam Brody Thinks Seth Cohen Didn't Survive The Last 7 Years

In the seven years since "The O.C." ended, Adam Brody has maintained steady work appearing in a number of movies and TV shows and became engaged to actress Leighton Meester, but he doesn't think the show's Seth Cohen would have fared nearly as well.

"If I had to predict, I'd say Seth Cohen is dead," Brody told Nylon magazine when asked what he thinks the character would be doing today. "I think he'd be going down to Mexico and probably had a bad car accident. It wasn't any fault of his own, but yeah, knowing what I know now about Seth and his poor decision-making, that's my guess."

With such a somber fate for his former alter ego, it made it much harder for Nylon to wonder what bands Brody believes TV's favorite emo kid would be listening to today.

"I mean, he's probably hanging out in heaven watching Jimi Hendrix and Lou Reed live," Brody offered up as a consolation. "He's probably getting the best concert ever!"

Well that's a silver lining, we suppose.

Barbie Designer Defends Doll's Strange Proportions, Dismisses Body Image Concerns

It's all for Barbie's clothes.

At least that's what Kim Culmone, vice president of design for Barbie maker Mattel, said in defense of the doll's impossible proportions in a recent interview.

"Barbie’s body was never designed to be realistic. She was designed for girls to easily dress and undress," Culmone told Fast Company's Co.Design, adding that Barbie's bizarre proportions are necessary for designers to create outfits for the doll. "If you’re going to take a fabric that’s made for us, and turn a seam for a cuff or on the body, her body has to be able to accommodate how the clothes will fit her."

This is reportedly the first time that Culmone, described as "Barbie's lead designer," has spoken up about the famous doll's unrealistic shape. As The Verge points out, Mattel has "rarely remarked on its Barbie dolls' controversial body proportions," despite the many criticisms that have been leveled against the toy company for creating a doll that may fuel body hatred among young girls.

Culmone, however, roundly dismissed these body image concerns, telling Co.Design that she doesn't believe children compare themselves with their dolls. As the outlet points out, however, a 2006 University of Sussex study concluded that unrealistically skinny dolls like Barbie may "damage girls’ body image."

Last year, Rehabs.com released a striking infographic that highlighted just how strange and impossible Barbie's body is by showing what the doll would look like if she were a real woman. According to the infographic, Barbie's body would be so disproportionate that she likely wouldn't be able to have all the necessary internal organs to live, due to her tiny mid-section and 16-inch waist.

Also in 2013, artist Nickolay Lamm created proportionate 3D images of Barbie standing next to a human being, as well as images of a Barbie doll with the measurements of an average 19-year-old woman.

"Some people say that Barbie is just a toy and that we shouldn't pay so much attention to her body proportions," Lamm told the Huffington Post in May. "However, if skinny models in advertisements get so much scrutiny, I feel Barbie, a doll which million of girls play with, should be open to critique as well."

Take a look at Lamm's "average-sized" Barbie in the photos below, and tell us what you think of the debate in the comments section.

Kate Middleton Is Getting A Makeover (Not That She Needs One)

It looks like royals can't even escape a little judgment from their in-laws.

As long time Kate Middleton advocates, we have adopted a "Kate-can-do-no-wrong" mentality, specifically when it comes to her stylish wardrobe. The Queen, on the other hand, seems to feel differently. The Mail reported Sunday that Kate Middleton is set to undergo a "subtle but significant regal makeover" for an upcoming trip to Australia this spring. The makeover will be a big change from those $72 dresses we love so much.

The wardrobe overhaul comes with direct support from Queen Elizabeth II, who has commissioned her own personal dresser, Angela Kelly, to work with Kate's stylists on a brand new look. Designs by Alexander McQueen and Alice Temperley have already been in the works for gowns and dresses.

Additionally, Kate will be encouraged to wear the Queen's favorite tiaras (no biggie), along with some of her other most beloved jewels to aide in her regal image.

Her majesty is not the only person close to Kate to critique her clothing. In fact, just last year, her friend encouraged her to start dressing a bit more "quirky."

Sounds like there are some conflicting views on her royal closet. But one thing is certain, Kate will look flawless no matter what she wears.

Her most royal fashion moments:
