It was a big week for Kim Kardashian West. Not only did the reality star turn 35, but she also co-hosted the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund Show. And of course, she did it all in style. We especially loved her sparkly skirt and top combo at the CFDA/Vogue event (this lady knows how to dress her baby bump).

But she wasn't the only one in her family to hit it out of the park. Kendall Jenner stole the show at the Balmain x H&M runway show, both on the catwalk and on the red carpet.

Check out all the other best-dressed stars of the week (they're not all Jenners or Kardashians) and let us know if you agree with our picks.

Alexandra Shipp made the ultimate commitment as an actress to prepare for her role as Storm in the upcoming "X-Men: Apocalypse" film. The 24-year-old cut off her long and flowing locks into a buzz haircut, which she debuted at Comic-Con back in July.

Shipp has been proudly rocking her close crop on the red carpet ever since, and we love how she's paired it with statement-making makeup. Below, check out the bold brows and severe cat eye she wore to the 22nd Annual Elle Women in Hollywood Awards. The starlet's buzz haircut is proof that you don't need hair down-to-there to be beautiful.

Check out Shipp's buzzcut below, and see which other celebs made our best beauty list.

5 Effective Tips For A Younger-Looking Smile

$
0
0

A smile is often the first thing you notice about a person. It lights up your face and, if you have a nice one, can make you more attractive. Some even think a nice smile can turn back the clock.

One 2011 study determined that people found smiling faces to be more attractive and youthful -- with some faces deemed up to three years younger when they had a smile on!

But what if you don't have a Hollywood megawatt grin? Decades of chewing, grinding and sipping through your teeth can leave your smile a little lackluster. And receding gum lines, yellowing and shifting can make for an aging smile.

Luckily, there are plenty of little steps you can take to preserve and protect your smile.

1. Go sugarless.

Dry mouth is a common complaint as we get older. There are hundreds of medications on the market that list dry mouth as a side effect -- including those used for incontinence and blood pressure. These drugs cause our mouths to produce less saliva, causing discomfort and making swallowing more difficult. But less saliva is also bad news for your oral health as saliva is what helps prevent decay and infections in the mouth.

The NIH recommends chewing on sugarless gum or sucking (not biting) on sugarless candy to help keep the saliva flow going in your mouth. These are also a great alternative to sugary candy and drinks -- such as juices and sodas-- that create acids in the mouth which eat away at your precious tooth enamel. But just be careful, as sugar-free products can sometimes cause stomach upset.

2. Avoid stains.

Discolored teeth are instantly aging. "As we get older, our teeth do get darker,"American Dental Association spokesman Richard Price told The Huffington Post. Price says that as we age, the internal part of the tooth begins to shrink, while the amount of dentin -- which is yellowish -- increases. As the enamel wears down, we see more and more of the dentin showing through.

To blame are our diets and lifestyle choices. Red wine, some carbonated drinks, coffee and teas can all cause surface stains. "Anything that will stain a carpet will stain your teeth," Price said.

But if you just can't resist your morning cuppa, try switching from black tea to green or herbal teas which are less likely to stain. And while you may be tempted to brush your teeth immediately afterwards, it's best to swish with water and then wait at least 30 minutes before you brush, so you don't damage your enamel.

3. Cut back on snacking.

We know snacking can be bad for our waistline, but it's also not great for our oral health. Frequent snacking, like munching on those potato chips at your desk or sipping a can of cola, can keep the acid levels high in your mouth for an extended time as you snack throughout the day. Sugar is obviously found in junk foods, but also in things like bread and cereal. They produce acids which, in turn, contribute to a breakdown of your tooth enamel. Price also says to avoid hard candies, which are akin to "bathing your teeth in sugar," while you suck on them all day.

If you must snack, Price recommends snacking on things like celery sticks or cucumber slices, that won't linger on your teeth.

4. Whiten and brighten.

As we age and our enamel thins out, we're bound to lose some of the pearliness of our teeth. Depending on which route you want to go and how much you want to spend, there are a variety of whitening products on the market which can help you get your teeth several shades whiter. Over-the-counter strips are a more economical option which you can do from the comfort of your home. You can also get custom-made whitening trays to fit your teeth with a trip to the dentist that usually have more potent whitening power. If you don't want to fuss with whitening at home, your dentist can do an in-office session as well, with options like laser whitening and bleaching. It's best to talk to your dentist before using any of these options, to discuss what's best for you. Treatments can sometimes cause sensitivity and gum irritation, so Price says you should always start a bleaching regimen under your dentist's supervision.

5. Fight inflammation.

Food or bacteria around the tooth that enter your bloodstream can lead to inflammation. And that inflammation can contribute to chronic diseases in the body, such as high blood pressure and diabetes.

According to Price, anything that's good for your body is also good for your oral health. "Skin does two things: it keeps blood in and germs out. Gums are skin," he explains. "If you're brushing and your gums are inflamed, they're more apt to bleed. When they bleed, there's a hole in the skin for blood to get out and germs to get in."

Brushing and flossing properly -- for at least two minutes -- twice a day can help keep inflammation at bay. There are other foods that you can include in your diet that are also thought to keep inflammation at bay. Foods like fatty fish, which are rich in Omega-3s, beets, kale, tomatoes, blueberries and garlic are also known to help fight inflammation.  Many spices, including turmeric, cinnamon and ginger, have also been known to help.

Amber Rose Makes A Statement With 'Popular Slut Club' Shirt

If you're thinking of calling Amber Rose a "slut," she's going to beat you to it.

The 32-year-old, who hosted a SlutWalk in Los Angeles earlier this month, hit up the Playhouse in Hollywood on Thursday night in a pink latex pencil skirt and a bright yellow T-shirt that read "Popular Slut Club."

Rose is all about empowering herself, and recently took on GQ for describing her as "Kanye's infamous ex" and "Wiz Khalifa's baby mama" in a profile.

But this isn't the first time Rose reclaimed the names she's been called with her sartorial choices. In September, she shared a photo of herself wearing a sports bra that read, "Slut? Only when I want to be," and she and BFF Blac Chyna showed up to the MTV VMAs wearing outfits with words like "golddigger," "stripper," and "slut" scrawled all over them.

Marche-style stuffed zucchini

Stuffed zucchini are a tradition in the history of Italian cooking and arose as a poor dish, made by chopping up leftovers and mixing them together. The version known as alla marchigiana – Marche style – uses veal for the filling, but in my recipe I have replaced it with seitan, a high-protein product made from wheat. This eliminates all cholesterol from the recipe, helping prevent heart disease. The original recipe also calls for frying the zucchini, but here we will simply blanch them. In addition to adding extra fat, frying must be done at a very high temperature that oxidizes the fat, forming toxic compounds.

Ingredients

400 g (14 oz) fresh tomatoes 200 g (7 oz) grilled seitan
1 handful parsley
250 g (9 oz) feta cheese
6 small zucchini
1 onion, extra virgin olive oil, salt and pepper

Thinly slice the onion and sauté it in 1 tablespoon of olive oil and 2 of water. Rinse and chop the tomatoes, and add them to the onion. Salt to taste and sauté. Meanwhile, chop the seitan. Lightly grease a non-stick pan with some oil and sauté the seitan. Transfer to a large bowl when done. Crumble the feta and add it to the seitan. Chop the parsley and add it to the seitan mixture. Season with pepper and blend well. Rinse and trim the zucchini. Cut them in half lengthwise and, using a teaspoon or corer, remove the pulp, being careful not to break the zucchini. Stuff the zucchini with the filling and then cook them in a non-stick pan with a little oil. When they are done, pour the hot tomato sauce over them, simmer for 10 minutes and serve.

Risotto with treviso radicchio

Risotto is a classic Italian dish and there are numerous versions. The most famous is with radicchio from Treviso, which has a somewhat bitter taste. I took the original recipe – typical winter fare, hearty but high in fat – and made it lighter by changing a
few things. In place of butter (high in saturated fat) I use fresh ricotta and feta, and for extra fiber I use brown rice instead of the classic Carnaroli white rice. In fact, it has been proven scientifically that just 30 grams – 1 ounce – of fiber a day helps reduce the risk of colon cancer.

Ingredients

1.5 l (6 1/3 cups) vegetable broth (or water) 1 onion
250 g (9 oz) long Treviso radicchio
320 g (1 2/3 cup) brown rice
40 g (1.5 oz) feta
80 g (3 oz) fresh ricotta salt
White pepper

Heat the broth. In the meantime, thinly slice the onion and sauté it in a little water. Rinse and trim the radicchio, and then cut it into thin strips. Add it to the onion and stir gently. When blended, stir in the rice. Continue cooking, adding the boiling broth as needed, a ladleful at a time, until the rice is done. This will take about 40 minutes. When done, salt to taste and stir in the crumbled or diced feta and the ricotta, blending it in thoroughly. Season with freshly ground white pepper and serve.

Perry Ellis Denies Exec Demanded 'No Blacks In My Ads'

Fashion's diversity problem extends well beyond the runway, according to racial discrimination lawsuits filed against the likes of Alexander McQueen and Tiffany & Co.

Now Perry Ellis International is the latest fashion clothing conglomerate to be slapped with a lawsuit alleging both racism and homophobia, accusations it denies. Yahoo reports Joseph Cook, the president of PEI-owned Original Penguin's wholesale division, filed a lawsuit against the company on Wednesday in Manhattan Federal Court.

Cook, an openly gay African American, says he was "forced to endure highly offensive homophobic, racial and ethnic slurs" from PEI president and COO, Oscar Feldenkreis. Cook alleges that in 2013 Feldenkreis told him to make sure there are “no blacks in my ads” and that he “did not want anyone who looked too gay.”

“I am deeply saddened as a gay man and someone who has always been proud of who I am no matter my color or sexual orientation that a company executive could be so intolerant of others,” Cook said in a statement released through his attorney, Douglas Wigdor.

PEI responded saying it "categorically denies" the accusations in a statement carried by Vogue UK:

Perry Ellis is a company that promotes equal opportunity and a positive working environment. The company is proud of the fact that it is probably one of the most diverse companies in the apparel business following its multicultural roots, stemming from Puerto Rico and Cuba. Perry Ellis categorically denies any allegations to the contrary. The claims that have been asserted will be vigorously defended against.

The company's current ads include models of color:

Caitlyn Jenner Takes A Page From Duchess Kate's Style Handbook

Remember the blue Issa dress that Kate Middleton wore when she and Prince William announced their engagement back in 2010?

Of course you do. And so did Caitlyn Jenner, who stepped out Wednesday night wearing a dress that, if not the same one, is pretty darn close.

The 65-year-old even paired the dress with strikingly similar black pumps, though they have a slightly pointier toe.

Jenner was recently spotted repeating a look of her own, but there's no denying she was inspired by the duchess this time around.

Hey, if you're going to take style cues from anyone, Kate is certainly not a bad choice.

Does Axe Body Spray Smell Better Than Fancy Cologne? We Investigate

$

Say you've promised yourself (and your friends) that you're going to make yourself smell better from here on out.

But there are so many options -- in choice and price -- that we'd understand if you gave up before you even got started.

We're here to help.

We wanted to see if people (specifically women) prefer designer men's colognes over Axe deodorant body spray (secretly hoping that they liked the cheaper version over the expensive kind), so we put together the following list that ranks three of Axe's new White Label Dry Spray line of antiperspirant deodorants with four more expensive colognes, to see how it all stacks up.

In a blind smell test, we asked five of our style editors to take a whiff of a man wearing each fragrance and tell us what they thought.

If you're not careful, the stuff you spray on yourself can be as bad (or worse, it turns out) than just going au naturale, but you might not have to pay as much as you'd think to get a fragrance that works for you. Here's a rundown of how they performed, ranked from worst to best.

How One Woman Used Silly Hats To Raise Some Serious Awareness

$

When Sara Cutting was diagnosed with triple negative breast cancer in July 2014, she bravely decided to take control ahead of chemotherapy by shaving off her hair in the days before her 18-week treatment began.

Soon the "365 Day Different Daily Headgear" challenge was born. To raise money for MacMillan Cancer Support, Cutting vowed to share a photo of herself in headgear each day for a year starting Oct. 14 2014, even if, as she predicted, she was not feeling up to it.

Now, one year and 365 hats later, Cutting has completed the challenge and raised over $24,000 for MacMillan. Her hats were amazing.

A quick scroll through Cutting's Instagram account is a heartwarming, and at times hilarious, look back at her treatment. She posed in an array of headgear, from the ordinary to the obscure (cheese grater hat, anyone?), finishing every photo caption with "Now go check your tits."

EmbedContent(5628f338e4b0443bb562d780,

,Embed,html,Some({}))

The photos are not only a reminder to people to stay aware of their own breast health, but as Cutting told The Huffington Post, it also served as a welcomed mood booster.

"During chemo it was very tough, but it definitely helped me plod on through those tough days, although I have to admit there were times where immediately after doing my selfie, I would have to go straight back to bed. It has really taught me to literally take one day at a time," she said.

EmbedContent(5628f338e4b0443bb562d782,

,Embed,html,Some({}))

She looks so at ease behind the camera, but Cutting admits the experience was completely new.

"Before I lost my hair, I'd never worn a hat, certainly never taken a selfie and NEVER posted hats or selfies on social media," she said. Still, once the photos started gaining attention, milliners approached her with an abundance of hats.

"All of a sudden boxes started to arrive at my door. I even got to borrow a Philip Treacy hat. I was terrified; it was worth a fortune and I was happy when I dropped it back off safely to his shop," she said. "My poor stepdaughter's room is now full of hats -- some of which have been made especially for my campaign."

EmbedContent(5628f338e4b0443bb562d783,

Now that the challenge has been completed, Cutting is training for a marathon and hopes to continue spreading awareness. One thing she plans on keeping, however, is her sparkle.

"Since losing my hair, I always give it a dose of gold glitter. Even now, it's growing back, I still put glitter on my shaved head. I love being bald now. From being more terrified of losing my hair to dying from cancer, I now love shaving my hair once a week and being a live disco ball. It makes me smile that when I hug men with beards, I always leave a little glitter on their facial hair," she said.

Mummified Derrick Rose
How to pull it off: Wrap all the toilet paper you have on yourself and proudly wear your Derrick Rose jersey. Leave eyeholes though -- you don't want to fall and get injured in real life like the costume's namesake

G.O.A.T. Serena Williams
How to pull it off: Tape "G.O.A.T." to a T-shirt, grab a tennis racket and hold the biggest silver plate (or tin foil-wrapped plate) you can find. Be the greatest.

How to pull it off: Get punched in the face and quickly grab an icepack. Or, just go for the ice packs and put on a lonesome face.

Tarnished But Still All-Powerful Roger Goodell
How to pull it off: Sloppily put on a jacket and tie, tape letters reading "WORLD'S MOST POWERFUL MAN" to your shirt, hold a giant "NFL RULE BOOK" and affix an egg to your face. (This one's a bit more difficult, but so is Goodell, amirite?

As the night goes on, be sure to rip up your rule book and litter everywhere. Goodell wouldn't have it any other way.

J. Crew Will End On-Call Shifts For U.S. Workers

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — J. Crew has agreed to end on-call scheduling at stores nationwide, following similar moves by several other major retailers, New York's attorney general said Friday.

In April, Attorney General Eric Schneiderman's office wrote to 13 retailers questioning the practice of keeping workers on call for shifts on short notice. The letter also cited possible violations of New York's requirement to pay hourly staff for at least four hours when they report for work.

"Workers deserve protections that allow them to have a reliable schedule in order to arrange for transportation to work, to accommodate child care needs and to budget their family finances," Schneiderman said Friday. The company has agreed to provide one week of advance notice about schedules at all its New York stores, he said.

Senior Vice President Maria Di Lorenzo said J. Crew ended on-call shifts nationally this month. The on-call shifts had helped the company deal with unexpected staff absences and schedule changes for product deliveries, she said. The retailer began discussing possible changes 10 months ago, has disabled the on-call feature from its scheduling software and now will fill needed slots on a voluntary basis, which may present some challengers for managers, she wrote in a letter to the New York attorney general.

"Further, J. Crew has strict anti-retaliation policies," Di Lorenzo wrote. "Consistent with those policies, J. Crew will not retaliate against associates who do not volunteer to cover these shifts."

That follows announced agreements confirmed by Bath & Body Works and affiliate Victoria's Secret, Abercrombie & Fitch and Gap Inc. Williams Sonoma said it's also ending the practice.

Urban Outfitters has agreed to end on-call shifts at its New York stores, according to the attorney general.

The Only Weight I've Lost From Running Is Caring What People Think About Me

This post originally appeared on xoJane.

It is 8 am on a Monday. This morning holds all the potential of the week ahead -- potential to have a perfect training week, to coast on the good mood that always comes from a good run. Potential to beat my speed and distance expectations.

I have a training plan taped to the pantry door so I can casually gesture to it when I brag to my husband. Did you see my pace today? He rolls his eyes because, of course, he already got an alert from MapMyRun with all my stats and a sweaty selfie.

Monday means a blank week ahead, where I can scribble my accomplishments, share triumphs.

I am a runner.

I started running a year ago to achieve a lifelong goal and to pull myself out of a postpartum funk. I didn't just want to run, I wanted to be a runner. The first few months were heavy with self-doubt. Just read what I wrote about it for xoJane in December. (Cliff Notes version: Who do I think I am, being this fat and trying to run?)

runner

Now I don't care what anyone thinks when I go out running.

What has changed after a year of running three times a week?

Let's just get this out of the way: My weight has not changed at all. There's probably an internet's worth of trolls ready to tell me I must be doing it wrong, but I'm just like *shrug*.

To me, it's so much more satisfying to examine what has changed in the last year as a result of running. Like my early stumbling blocks, the greatest changes have been all in my head.

First off, it feels so good to look at how far and fast I can run today, compared to one year ago. A year ago I ran for one brutal minute before I needed a full four minutes to recover. After two or three rounds like that, I felt like I had put in max effort and went home limping and huffing.

Today, I run and run, pay less attention to the time, take walk breaks for steep hills or to pick up a tossed sippy cup. (I still execute the majority of my runs while pushing a 28-pound toddler in a 25-pound stroller. This makes me a badass.)

Some days there are longer walk breaks with less invincibility to fuel me. Months ago I complained to my husband (a runner since high school) about how unsatisfying a run had been. I was slow, heavy, achey, grumpy. He told me it might feel crappy all week, but eventually it would feel great again. Now I've learned to accept the tough days and keep moving. At one time, my motivation was so fragile and sensitive!

Last year, I wrote, "Each day is a battle with my own mind's powerful attempts to keep me stationary and hidden inside the house." That attitude has totally flipped; it now takes a very powerful force to pull me off my training plan. This summer, I ran through oppressive south Texas temperatures. In the last few months I have had weekly migraines, but I keep making up workouts.

Now a quick 30-minute run is not enough. I start to feel best after 45 minutes or an hour. My idea of cross-training is walking because my motto is "Miles, Miles, Miles" -- somewhat to my own detriment.

A doctor suggested I add strength training because building muscle improves insulin sensitivity. I am as obsessed with vanquishing diabetes as I am with becoming an athlete, so I had good intentions. Still, when I get an opportunity to work out, all I hear is "Miles, Miles, Miles."

Plenty of people are into exercise -- that's not so special. It still feels strange to me, though, because for so long I didn't think I belonged in that world. Even through the years when I wasn't running, I subscribed to running magazines, built my aspirations on stories of "real" runners. This year I started to notice that real runners are a lot more like me than I knew.

It began with a kind comment on that December article, pointing me to a Facebook community of running women called The Fat Girl's Guide to Running -- "The world's first virtual running club for plus size women." Founder Julie Creffield started running ten years ago and now inspires thousands of women to keep going and claim the title "athlete." I appreciate that her merchandise, books, and blog posts don't exclude me based on size or speed.

Then this summer, Women's Running magazine caused a bit of a sensation when it featured plus-sized runner Erica Shenk on its August cover. I bought a copy as soon as I could find it because from my perspective, it was a watershed moment. A fitness magazine with someone like me on the cover, an article titled "3 Reasons Your Weight Doesn't Matter," and a feature on gear that is actually made in my size. It was the magazine equivalent of being able to walk into a store and try on clothes instead of just daydreaming about being included.

running

My own well-loved copy.

Around the same time, I learned about Mirna Valerio when she was profiled by Runner's World. I wanted to think I was like her -- same age, same size, a blogger. I wanted to think I could become more like her -- a better, faster runner. She is not just a runner (which is awesome enough), but an ultra runner, a shocking feat for any (type of) body. She takes a selfie on every run, to claim her place in that experience.

Media attention for women like Mirna, Julie, and Erica indicates a subtle shift from the old narrative of running to get skinny to running while fat and enjoying it. I didn't want to pretend I was invisible on runs anymore; I wanted to be there, no matter who saw me.

In a year of running, I have noticed exactly one strange look from a bystander. I know some runners get heckled and harassed, but I must keep my headphones loud enough to miss all that.

A year ago, I went out for runs in whatever raggedy old stretchy thing would provide the best camouflage. Now I gear up in clothes that work for me because this is a passion I've proven my commitment to. My arms are bare and my running tights are tight.

Today I am 12 weeks into a half-marathon training program. The race is in December, and I know I can complete it. In fact, now I'm pretty sure I can do many of the things I've long daydreamed about -- hiking, paddle boarding, cycling.

But I'm not just daydreaming about these activities, I'm planning for them.

Coach Has Repopularized The Pinback Buttons You Loved In The '90s

When's the last time you wore a button? Maybe it was back in the '90s at a boy band concert or perhaps more recently during the last presidential election. Whatever the case, pinback buttons -- and their smaller yet equally cute cousin, the lapel pin -- are definitely not at the top of our must-wear lists.

But that's about to change. We were reminded of the simple yet impactful power of the button/pin after falling in love with Coach's fall 2015 leather racer jacket:

The highly adorned jacket is a prime example of how much fun getting all buttoned or pinned up can be. The possibilities are endless by just adding or subtracting the tiny accessories.

We even tried it ourselves ...

Tyga Continues To Be Explicit About His Relationship With Kylie Jenner In 'Ice Cream Man' Video

If you thought Tyga's song "Ice Cream Man" would be filled with clever euphemisms for oral sex, you're wrong. It cuts straight to the chase.

"She like to fuck me, suck me, suck then fuck me / I'm the ice cream man, she chunky monkey," the 25-year-old raps on the song off the mixtape he released in August -- a few weeks after Kylie Jenner (who we assume is the inspiration) turned 18.

He also pays tribute to Jenner's butt with the line, "She got a marshmallow booty, I like to sprinkle it too."

Between this and Tyga's ode to statutory rape song "Stimulated," where he raps,“They say she young, I shoulda waited / She a big girl, dog, when she stimulated" -- it's like, we get it, you're having sex. Congrats.

We do have one question, though: Is Tyga calling her fat when he says she's his "Chunky Monkey" ... or what?

Digi-Dating, Digi-Sex, Digi-Love

1985: Marian, an unmarried 25-year-old resident of Chicago, felt lonely one evening. Hoping to meet Mr. Right (or at least Mr. Right Now), she showered, did her hair, put on makeup and slipped into her slinky black dress. Then she walked downstairs from her second-floor apartment, hailed a cab, and took an expensive ride to a singles bar several miles away. At the club, she bought herself a couple of overpriced drinks and waited for a decent looking man to display interest in her. Several men offered to buy her a drink, but none of them was her type. Eventually, dejected and depressed, she left the bar and went home.

2015: Marian, an unmarried 25-year-old resident of Chicago, felt lonely one evening. She pushed some popcorn into the microwave and logged on to her Tinder smartphone app. She noticed a couple of cute guys right away. She swiped their profiles to indicate interest, and before her kernels had popped she was texting with one of them. Twenty minutes later he arrived at her doorstep, happy to share her popcorn, a movie, and a little bit more. No hours of preparation, no expensive cab ride or overpriced drinks, no parade of losers, and no disappointment at the end of the night.

In the examples above, the 2015 version of Marian benefited greatly from digital technology and its ongoing elimination of the barriers to romance and sexuality that once existed. For her, the Internet transformed the backyard dating pond of yesteryear into an ocean of digital opportunity. So instead of wasting her night, modern-day Marian quickly and easily located the (semi-intimate) connection she was looking for. And she is hardly alone in her approach. These days, practically everyone who's interested in meeting a potential romantic or sexual partner is online. Men and women, gay and straight, young and old -- they are all searching for someone, and they're nearly always conducting that search in the digital universe.

The trend toward online romance began in the early 1990s with AOL chatrooms and "bulletin boards" like Craigslist. Digital dating got "official" in 1995 when Match.com launched the first-ever online dating service. Soon thereafter, literally hundreds competitors hit the Net, and by 2005 sites like Match and eHarmony were BIG business. Or so we thought.

Nowadays the dating websites that dominated the mid-2000s are antiquated small potatoes. In fact, the online romance and sex scenes didn't fully take flight until 2009 with the advent of dating and hookup apps. The first of these was Grindr, geared toward gay men seeking sex and/or romance (but mostly sex). Almost immediately the app went wild, and within a few short months the market space was littered with knockoffs geared toward every demographic imaginable. These days, whatever it is that you're looking for, there's an app that will help you find it. And an astounding number of people are taking advantage. For instance, Tinder, a relative latecomer to the scene (launched in August 2012), has more than 50 million users, and they're swiping at other members' profiles 1.5 billion times per day. (That's billion, not million, and day, not year.)

Of course, some people (mostly older folks) are less than thrilled with this development. Essentially, they worry that this increasingly easy access to romantic stimulation is cheapening the product, creating a "faux intimacy" that benefits nobody. As psychologist Dorree Lynn says, "It's easier to hop into bed than have a relationship." She feels that "communication skills, genuine communication skills, which means face-to-face communication, are quickly going by the wayside." In other words, she worries that digital technology is providing people with a watered-down version of intimacy that ultimately prevents the formation of genuinely deep connections.

What Dr. Lynn and other doomsayers fail to understand is that the paradigm for "genuinely deep connections" has shifted. Thanks to digital technologies, modern daters, whether they are looking for something casual or serious, have learned to meet, flirt, date and eventually mate differently than their predecessors.

For many digital daters, especially those under the age of 30, a couple of nicely worded texts can be every bit as alluring as a smoothly delivered in-person pickup line, and a racy sext can be every bit as arousing as a surreptitious hand placed lightly on the knee or thigh. More importantly, after the first date, things like text messages, video chats, and even mutual online video gaming can be fun and meaningful ways to further the relationship -- every bit as effective as face-to-face flirting, dating, and hanging out. And let's be perfectly honest: If people didn't like these new ways of connecting, they wouldn't be so popular!

The simple truth is that digital-age dating and sexuality is not the same as pre-Internet dating and sexuality. Nevertheless, people still manage to meet, date and fall in love. They're just traveling a different pathway to get there. For some, like Dr. Lynn, this can be a scary proposition. In fact, older adults, particularly those who came of age pre-Internet, nearly always prefer a more traditional approach to dating -- or at least a blended approach where they meet online (via Match, eHarmony, and the like) but then go old-school with chatty phone calls and dates that take place in restaurants, theaters and similar in-the-flesh venues. The younger generation, however, has evolved, incorporating digital devices and communications into their lives, including their romantic lives, in ways that are both ubiquitous and perfectly healthy -- even if their elders don't understand them.

Just the Way You Are

For people that grew up feeling like they weren't lovable, love can be a tricky thing. We are all to eager to give, whether it's a batch of cookies, a blouse, or a blow job. We attach our hopes and expectations to potential friendship and romantic prospects that have no hope of meeting them. We make ourselves too available to people that don't deserve our time. We abandon ourselves and try to become more of what we think others want from us.

I see way too many women going through some of the same painful things that I myself went through looking for companionship. If you're looking for a relationship to complete you or provide validation, you're most likely going to be attracted to the wrong kind of partner and you won't be able to give. Whether you're Plus Size or have a body like Giselle, it seems like no woman is impervious to the sneaking suspicion that she is somehow not enough, and that fear can drive some really strange behavior when it comes to romance.

Desperation
Preconceived notions of the kind of person you should be with
Giving parts of yourself away
Being used

Whether or not you believe it, you deserve love, just as you are. No, not you minus twenty pounds or plus two cup sizes. Not you with more money or less body hair. Not you with more accolades or fewer past failures. The very raw, unedited version of you. You in soft pants and a messy bun with no make-up, after eating a cheeseburger.

You don't have to do anything or be anything in order to deserve love. You don't have to give anything away or go chasing it. You, just as you are today, living your life, can attract love in a variety of forms. Romantic love, friendship love, familial love, career love, follower love. Just by being you.

2015-10-23-1445559347-8809086-Melinda0111.jpg

While you can't always go through life with photographer Roberto Ligresti lighting you, or hair and make-up artist Vanessa Evelyn keeping every hair in place, you can beam worthiness from the inside out and attract the things you want into your life.

Whether or not you've got the love you're looking for in your life right now, it's headed your way. The ONLY catch is that you have to be there, ready and waiting to receive it. Not with your head in toilet because you've eaten or drunk too much. Not with you sweating your credit card balance because you've overspent in order to compensate for a feeling of emptiness in your life. Not with you obsessively plotting and scheming on how to get ahead in your career because you're convinced that your abilities alone won't get you there.

Even if you've walked away from a good thing before. Even if you have (or are) giving away parts of yourself to people who don't deserve it. Even if you've been rejected. Even if you haven't spoken to them in years. Even if you haven't blogged in six months. Even if you aren't entirely sure what any of this means, but have a faint glimmer of recognition that you want some of this in your life.

Complete and total acceptance. Unabashed praise. Uncompromising loyalty. Limitless devotion. Abundant affection. These are all attributes of a sincere, loving relationship. These things are all available to you, if you can find a way to be still amidst the chaos and focus on what you want. Take your eyes off of the fleeting pleasure of the moment, and focus on the bigger picture of what you deserve. I can speak to this because this is what I experience now, in my marriage to the love of my life.

You don't have to change yourself, or anything in your life, in order to be deserving of the love you seek. All you have to do is recognize this possibility, and then sit back and wait for the good things to start rolling in. And take it from me -- they will!

Kim Kardashian "LOVES" Halloween. We know this because she tends to go hard when it comes to costumes and she just wrote "I LOVE Halloween" on her website.

Historically, Kardashian embraced Halloween as it was famously defined by "Mean Girls," and wore four different costumes in 2010 alone. With Halloween fast approaching it's time to take a walk down memory lane and remember all of the star's epic looks:

As a skeleton in 2014.
