20 Things To Stop Giving A Sh*t About In 2016

$

0

The new year is a perfect time for self-reflection and resolution-making. It's also a great time to hit "refresh" on the way you look at your life and the things you prioritize. This year, instead of vowing to hit the gym every day, we thought we'd make some un-resolutions and tally some of the things that we're going to cross off our list of stressors for the next year. Because, sometimes, you just need to give fewer f**ks about the things that are weighing you down.

Below are 20 things we've vowed to stop giving a sh*t about in 2016. What would you add?

1. Having plans on a Friday night. After a long week, sometimes all you want to do is watch Netflix and order takeout. Own that instead of feeling guilty about it.

2. The sexual connotations of Netflix and chill. Maybe you just literally want to Netflix and chill! Watching Netflix and chilling while doing so sounds delightful! (See above.)

3. "Putting yourself out there." Yes, it's great to make new friends and open yourself up to new romantic connections if you're looking for them. But often the people who tell you to "just put yourself out there!" ignore the immense amount of effort and mental energy it takes to do that. Also, oftentimes finding new love is more about dumb luck than individual effort.

4. Watching every new TV show and listening to every hit song. There is way too much great television and music to keep up with it all. Just stick to the things that truly excite you.

5. Doing trendy workouts you don't enjoy. Hard pass on paying $45 a class to feel like death.

6. Making plans you have no interest in to catch up with people out of obligation. Ain't nobody got time for that. Instead, dedicate time and energy to nurturing the relationships you truly care about.

7. The perfect winged eyeliner. We officially give up.

8. Twitter trolls. This one is easier said than done, but often it's best to dedicate as little energy as possible to garbage humans on the Internet.

9. Getting tons of likes on Instagram. If you want to Instagram your brunch/weekend trip/view/funny sign/visiting BFF, do it because you want to, likes be damned.

10. Whether or not Hillary Clinton is "likeable" enough. Nope nope nope, moving along.

11. Making a big deal out of Valentine's Day. Whether you're in a relationship or not, putting too much importance on an arbitrary day as a marker of "real" love is more stressful than it's worth.

12. Wearing cute workout clothing. This is not meant to shame people who have and love said workout clothing. More power to you! But no one needs to feel obligated to look loungewear runway ready when heading off to gym.

13. Wearing 3-inch heels every day. If that's your style, again, you do you and rock it. But if you're putting your poor legs and feet through hell for a few extra inches, maybe don't. You'll still be just as gorgeous without the heels.

14. Finishing every book you start even when you aren't into it. Next time we get halfway through a novel and feel zero investment in the main characters, we're just gonna close it and give up.

15. Having the "perfect" body. You are enough, just as you are. Too much mental anguish goes into seeking an impossible standard.

16. Fake "pasta" made out of vegetables. Just eat the damn noodles if you want them.

17. Selfie shaming. Take and post as many fierce selfies as you want to. No one has the right to determine the images you put out there but you.

18. How your life compares to the lives of your former classmates/friends/siblings. Forget comparisons and arbitrary timelines. You do you.

19. Avoiding adding cheese in your salad. Life is short, put a little cheese on your lettuce.

20. People who don't give a sh*t about you. #BYE

Happy 2016, y'all!

Miss Colombia Ariadna Gutiérrez Opens Up About 'Humiliating' Miss Universe Flub

More than a week after being mistakenly crowned the winner at the 2015 Miss Universe pageant, Miss Colombia Ariadna Gutiérrez has opened up about the “humiliating” ordeal.

“I was disconnected. I haven't received phone calls from almost anyone. Very few people have communicated with me,” the 22-year-old told Colombia's W Radio on Wednesday, explaining why she’s been mostly silent about the incident. “That's because I had to grieve for what happened.”

Gutiérrez had already started celebrating what she believed to be her victory at the Dec. 20 Miss Universe pageant when host Steve Harvey interrupted her revelry to announce that he'd read out the wrong name for the winner. In a mortifying on-air moment, the crown was then taken from a visibly stunned Gutiérrez -- and given to an equally flabbergasted Miss Philippines, Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach.

Photos of the aftermath show an emotional Gutiérrez being comforted by her fellow contestants.

After the on-air flub, Gutiérrez, who was named the first runner-up, was widely praised for responding to Harvey’s mistake with grace. “Everything happens for a reason,” she said backstage immediately after the mortifying incident.

She later took to Instagram to congratulate Miss Philippines for her win. “Life continues and in the future we will find out why things happen the way they happen,” she wrote in her post

In her interview with W Radio this week, however, Gutiérrez had a few stronger words for what happened, calling the incident a “great shock” and a “great injustice.”

“They did not do things the right way,” Gutiérrez said of the way the error was handled.

“They could have done it, I don't know, the next day in a press conference or a press release,” she said, referring to the stripping of the crown.

Still, Gutiérrez stressed that she was looking on the bright side.

“I managed to make history, which I think is more important than winning the Miss Universe title,” she told W Radio.

New Year's Dinner at The World's Best Restaurant

Fermented plums and wild beach roses.

Last night, Lisa and I ate a special New Year's Eve dinner at Noma, reputed to be the 'World's Best Restaurant' for an astonishing four years in a row.

Well, it was.... perhaps the best word is.. unique.

Many years ago, (many, unfortunately), I was in Nagano, Japan. This was even before the winter Olympics were held there, so this was a LONG time ago.

In any event, I was invited to what was called a 'very special meal' at a Buddhist Monestary in the mountains outside Nagano. There, I was served a multi-course dinner consisting entirely of vegetables. This was not your typical 'vegetarian' meal. On the contrary, each dish, and there were many, was completely unique - and beautifully presented.

It was more like discovering an entire cuisine that you never knew existed before. As though you were having Chinese food or Italian food for the very first time in your life.

This was our experience at Noma last night.

An entirely new and different cuisine. 14 or 15 courses of food and ways of preparing it that we had simply never tasted or experienced before. That alone was more than worth the price of admission.

The philosophy behind Noma is that all of the ingredients are localy sourced. Denmark has its gastronomic limits when it comes to the raw material - pine trees, clams, seaweed, moss - you get the idea. But Chef Rene Rezepi's creativity is astonishing. Anyone (or almost anyone) can broil a chicken. But try making roasted kelp ice cream - then try making it taste better than vanilla!

The courses, and there were many, (although each one is small), ran the spectrum from sea urchin and walnuts to egg yolk, potato and nasturtium to sliced raw squid and kelp. But to list them does not even begin to explain the incredible complexity with which they are prepared and presented.

2016-01-02-1451730647-9922851-IMG_4140.JPG
Summer squash with caviar

One course, call simply Cabbage and Samphire was actually a kind of sandwich of watercress and samphire between two leaves of 'crispy cabbage' - two cabbage leaves that had been baked and prepared in a variety of ways for 26 hours - each. The taste was, as I said, unlike anything we have ever eaten before.

The photo above, for example, was fermened plum and wild beach roses, but presented as a kind of disc roaring with flavor but the kind of flavors I simply have never had before.

All in all, an absolutely astonishing experience.

I have to, in writing this, thank my good friend Mark Bittman, the food critic for The New York Times, who help us enormously in securing this reservation. Even then, it took nearly a year of back and forth emails. But believe me, it was worth it.

Oh, and one more thing.

I lived in Copenhagen for about 6 months in the 1980s when I was working with Jan Stenbeck and we were building TV3, the first commercial TV station in Denmark (and VJ-driven!).

At that time, my taste in food was, well, let us say, a bit less developed. In fact, I ate at the same Chinese restaurant pretty much every day. Remarkably, last night, in a walk along the Strogt, the walking street, Lisa and I found the restaurant. It is still in business!
2016-01-02-1451730934-3350549-ScreenShot20160102at5.34.49AM.png
27 years later - still in business

Sadly, Noma will not be. Having achieved the absolute pinnacle of success in the food world, Noma is closing its doors for the last time, one year from today - so get going!

Obama's Hawaiian Holidays Just Keep Getting Better

$

0

As the first family's eighth annual Christmas trip winds down, one thing has become clear: The Obamas are adept at Hawaii vacations.

President Barack Obama and his clan went out for shave ice, had a fancy dinner at Alan Wong's Honolulu, packed in tons of tee time and, of course, showed their appreciation for our troops with their annual Christmas Day visit to the Marine Corps Base Hawaii

And as they look toward their last year as the first family of the United States, we're starting to feel a little sentimental -- especially when it comes to the Obamas' Hawaiian holidays.

Below, six glorious things that have happened during their's annual trip to Hawaii.

1. When Obama surprised the country with his impressive surf skills.

Of all the candid snaps of the president taken throughout his career, one particular photo series takes the cake for being the coolest: Obama body surfing at Sandy Beach Park, his childhood surf break.

Unfortunately, surf sessions like this would prove to be more difficult as president.

"The Secret Service these days does not like me doing it," Obama told American Urban Radio Networks in 2009. "The last time I tried it, they had a bunch of people out on jet skis in the water and surrounding me with all kinds of stuff."

2. When Obama's abs were so distracting, the White House banned them.

When the first family went snorkeling at the Hanauma Bay State Park in 2010, the White House banned media from taking pictures of the president sans shirt.

Reporters traveling with Obama were issued "strict instructions that there would be no long lenses or other sneaky attempts to take pictures of a shirtless leader of the free world," according to a report in The New York Times.

Apparently, the White House learned this lesson from Obama's 2008 trip, when photographs of the leader and his "Barack Hard Abswere published everywhere.

3. When a Polar Bear trolled Obama around Oahu.

Frostpaw, the "polar bear" activist from the Center for Biological Diversity, had followed the president around the country for months, trying to draw attention to the controversial Keystone XL pipeline (which Obama eventually rejected last November). So when the Obamas came to Hawaii for the holidays in 2013, the furry stalker followed.

Bill Snape, the IRL environmental lawyer behind Frostaw, finally got the shout out he was hoping for when Obama took a short break from his tee time at Kailua's Mid-Pacific Country Club to say, "Hey polar bear!"

The greeting was considered a "victory" for the Center of Biological Diversity, according to the ClimateWire.

"So he makes his putt, I start clapping and waving at him, real respectfully, and that's when he said, 'Hey polar bear!'" Snape told ClimateWire. "And the rest was history."

4. When FLOTUS and Oprah snuck in some girl time on Maui.

The end of the Obamas' 2013-2014 holiday coincided with Michelle Obama's 50th birthday, so the president surprised the first lady with an extra week in Hawaii.

And since Michelle Obama's good friend Oprah Winfrey was celebrating her 60th birthday at her ranch on the island of Maui, the two turned the extension into one of the coolest joint-birthdays ever.

While the details of their get-together were kept secret, local reports confirmed that swarms of police officers and Secret Service agents were outside Oprah's residence during that week.

We can only imagine what delicious farm-to-table feasts the two could've enjoyed together.

5. When Obama dropped the mic.

While golfing the last hole at a Kailua golf course, Obama set his stance, positioned his club, then carefully sunk a 40-foot chip shot at the 18th green. When the ball dropped in, the president spun around proudly to look at nearby spectators and press.

"A cheer went up when he made the shot," Julie Hirschfeld Davis, a White House correspondent for the New York Times, wrote in a press pool report. "And POTUS raised both arms in triumph, then turned and pointed in your pool's direction, in a 'You guys saw that, right?' kind of a gesture, although he didn't say a word."

6. When Obama surprised hikers climbing the grueling "Stairmaster from Hell".

Locals and tourists often climb the Koko Head Crater Staircase -- 1,048 wooden steps known as the "Stairmaster from Hell" -- for a quick but strenuous workout. But when Obama and his security entourage barreled up the crater in December, hikers had to step aside for a breather.

Thankfully, Obama greeted everyone along the way, even as one passerby took advantage of the situation and asked the president to "legalize it on your way out!"

Jeb Bush, Selfie Master, Teaches 'Selfie Training' Class

$

Voters who don't know how to take a selfie: Jeb Bush is here for you.

Since we're in the midst of the "Selfie Election," it pays to stay informed, and it's no surprise that the candidates have gleaned a thing or two about this important social issue.

Hillary Clinton acknowledged early on that, "For younger people, [selfies are] as important as anything they could have asked me. So I just say, 'OK, we’re going to do it.'"

Ben Carson, on the other hand, wrote in a Washington Post op-ed that, "beyond the obvious narcissism of endlessly photographing oneself and blasting it over social networks for others to admire, selfies are dangerous." He also really hates selfie sticks.

But Bush has got it down to an art, and turned a question asked at a recent fundraiser ("How has the role of the selfie changed [your] candidacy?") into an impromptu stand-up routine glittered with wisdom and punctuated with the classic Bush-Wait-For-Applause shrug.

Here are his fool-proof rules:

1. "It is a requirement that you take one, and I do it with great joy in my heart."

2. Treat it like an autograph: "Look, it wasn't that long ago that people wanted signatures on things. Forget that. Now, it's 'I want my damn selfie.'"

3. Have a long enough arm, "Or [he] will take over."

4. Be young: "Young people do it better than older people."

5. "It's cooler to do it diagonally rather than straight up."

6. Place the camera higher than your head: "You look skinnier."

To give you some perspective, Bush has come a long way since June, when he experienced an awkward encounter with a flustered voter in Iowa.

Today's tech-savvy savant with a "selfie stick of an arm" is hardly recognizable from the Jeb of months passed. And if you practice his steps listed in his six commandments above, you, too, can have selfies that look like this:

This Pasta Purse Lets You Take Your Love Of Carbs On The Go

First there was the pizza pouch. Now, for the slightly more fashionable carb lover, there's the pasta purse.

Rommy Kuperus, a Netherlands-based blogger and designer, boasts a wide selection of wacky items in her Etsy shop rommydebommy, including a giant clutch in the shape of a piece of farfalle. The $100 bag has a pouch that can carry all the essentials any pasta lover might need in their life.

Kuperus offers other, less wearable designs on her site, like a set of sanitary napkin accessories and a salad clutch, but it's her more understated pieces, like the farfalle purse and a biscuit clutch that really get our parmesan grinders going.

Despite their quirkiness, it appears from the site's reviews people love the funny food designs. Reviews call the pieces "so much fun" and "a dream."

Of course, for $100, you could buy enough actual pasta to take with you everywhere you go, but this way is much cuter.

Adorable Photos Of Barack And Malia Obama Are #FamilyGoals

$

This is President Barack Obama's final year in office, but the father of two is also facing another milestone in 2016.

Malia Obama, the president's eldest daughter, is gearing up to go off to college -- and if photos from the first days of 2016 are any indication, the president is squeezing in as much quality time with the 17-year-old as possible.

On the last day of their annual Hawaii vacation, the father-daughter duo seemed nearly inseparable during a family trip to the Honolulu Zoo.

"While younger daughter Sasha stayed close to her cousins, Obama walked hand-in-hand with older daughter Malia," the Honolulu-Star Advertiser reported.

The happy duo were photographed again on Sunday --  and again, hand-in-hand -- returning to the White House.

Talk about #FamilyGoals:

Malia, a high school senior, spent last year touring college campuses, including Ivy League schools like Brown, Princeton, Yale, the University of Pennsylvania and Columbia, which is the president's alma mater.

As Malia gets closer to starting college, Obama isn't holding back his feelings about her imminent departure from the nest. Last fall during a visit to a college in Michigan, the president almost teared up while talking about Malia becoming a young adult.

"Just yesterday, Malia started her first day of senior year. You know, I was sitting in her room because I was going to see her off her first day of school. She puts her head on my shoulder and she says, 'Daddy, you know, you realize this is probably going to be the last time that you ever send me off for my first day of school,'" Obama said during the speech.

"I had to look away," he added. "I didn’t want to just be such a crybaby. It makes no sense. Michelle and I are way too young to have daughters who are both almost in college now. So as a parent, I was a little freaked out."

We feel for you, POTUS, we really do.

Lily-Rose Depp Gets Her First Cover, Appearing On Love Magazine

Lily-Rose Depp, arguably one of the most talked about models of late, finally got her own cover. Depp, the daughter of actors Vanessa Paradis and Johnny Depp, made her glossy debut for the upcoming issue of Love Magazine

We almost didn't recognize the it-girl, who sports highly pigmented makeup (uh, hello blue eyeshadow!) and what seems to be a ruffled top. The image instantly reminds us of the colorful glamour of the 1980s, which Depp pulls off quite well. Photographed by Willy Vanderperre, the cover was styled by Love Magazine's fashion director Panos Yiapanis

While this definitely sets the tone for what might be Depp's big year, she already accomplished something huge last July: starring in her own Chanel advertisement

Take another look at Depp's cover debut above. We can't wait to see what else she has in store for 2016!

The 15th issue of Love Magazine hits stands on Feb. 8.

Eva Longoria Reveals She Was 'An Ugly Duckling' As A Child

Take heart, children of the world: You might grow up to look like Eva Longoria!

The actress appeared on the "Today" show Monday to discuss her new NBC sitcom "Telenovela," and in the course of her talk with Hoda Kotb and Jenna Bush Hager, she revealed that she was "an ugly duckling" when she was a child.

"I blossomed very late," Longoria explained. "I was like the ugly, skinny dark one -- 'la prieta fea' is what my family called me, which is 'ugly dark one.'"

Longoria said that her sisters, by contrast, were blonde, green-eyed and beautiful. But thinking that she would never have the advantage of beauty led Longoria to develop other parts of her personality to get ahead -- parts that have proven very useful as an actress.

"I was kind of always funny. I was like, 'OK, I'm not gonna be pretty, I'm gonna be the funny one,'" she said. "And then I got the chance to do it!'

Of course, Longoria is now, at 40, considered one of the most beautiful women in the world. She didn't reveal when her "ugly duckling" phase ended, but it probably wasn't all that late; Longoria was crowned Miss Corpus Christi in March 1998, the month she turned 23.

"Telenovela" -- which looks a little like a cross between "UnREAL" and "Jane the Virgin," if Rogelio were the star of the latter -- premieres Monday at 8:30 p.m. EST on NBC.

Lorde Confirms She Didn't Throw Shade At Kendall Jenner And Harry Styles

She may be a huge pop star, but when all's said and done, Lorde is just another teenager who's never been on vacation outside of her own country.

The "Royals" singer shared a picture on Instagram over the weekend and expressed what sounds like major FOMO in the caption.

When you scroll through your feed and all the pretty famous boys and girls are on yachts or in Saint Barth's and you're at home where it's raining and you've never even been on a holiday to another country before, never been to a tropical island let alone Saint Barth's and actually you aren't even sure if you're spelling Saint Barth's right.

After seeing the post, fans began speculating that she was throwing shade at Kendall Jenner and Harry Styles, who were recently spotted on vacation together in St. Barts. (Note: There was apparently plenty of PDA involved.)

Lorde laughed off the accusations by clarifying her initial caption. "Lol no 'shade' folks if i were on an island or in even nearish proximity to a yacht you would be hearing all the f**k about it just making fun of my own lameness," she wrote.

But can we just take a minute to note that Lorde almost definitely has enough money to take herself on vacation and to buy herself a yacht?

Here's Why Leonardo DiCaprio Has Never Had A Bad Hair Day

The Changing Face Of Leonardo DiCaprio!

How is that even the same person?! #MPOriginal

Posted by Moviepilot Video on Tuesday, December 29, 2015

Want to look like Leonardo DiCaprio? Buy a lot of pomade.

It appears that the key to the actor's style is consistency. DiCaprio sported floppy blonde locks as a teen, but ever since starring in "Catch Me If You Can" in 2002, his off-camera look has defaulted to that film's slicked-back look -- no matter how long he grows out his hair to play a character.

It also helps if you can be born with an impressive widow's peak, cultivate a permanent yacht tan and have a personal hairstylist on set every day.

Whether it's short, parted down the middle, combed to the side, or long (the hair he grew out for his role as Hugh Glass in "The Revenant" partially spawned the man bun era) it's almost like the 41-year-old has never had a bad hair day. Even including, dare we say, his Arnie Grape days.

Here, we investigate. Check out the major shift in 2002:

ADAY Makes Clothes That'll Help You Keep Your New Year's Resolution

If you're one of the many people whose New Year's resolution is to get in shape, then you're probably in the market for some workout gear that'll motivate you to go to the gym. In which case, you'll want to know about a new activewear company that is going to help you do just that.

Meet ADAY, a London-based brand founded by Nina Faulhaber and Meg He that creates clothing that works for the gym and for real life. Basically, there's no need to bring a change of clothes after your workout, as their pieces can take you from your pilates class to the office ... and then to dinner (just don't forget to shower in between, ahem).

"The ADAY woman is a smart, busy woman with things to get done -- her most scarce resource is time," says Sonia Gupta, Director of Global Operations at ADAY. "Wearing ADAY all day doesn’t require you to pack several changes of clothes for all the different musings of your day -- it’s one outfit that can tackle anything and be ready for the unexpected," Gupta continued.

Right now, the line is available for purchase on the brand's site, and while you might assume that the pieces look like ordinary workout clothes, they actually look more like ready-to-wear garments. In fact, we would sooner liken them to designs by Acne, Alexander Wang and 3.1 Phillip Lim, rather than Lululemon or Nike.

The line starts at $18 for cashmere-and-wool socks and goes up from there. Tank tops clock in around $50, while leggings and track pants are in the $95 range. These prices may seem a little steep, but the high-performance fabrics ensure that you won't be replacing your gear every couple of months -- these pieces will last for years.

Now you're out of excuses not to hit the gym.

We may have all just come back from winter break, but we're already dreaming of another vacation thanks to Lena Dunham.

The "Girls" star posted a bikini selfie on Instagram on Sunday, in which she's seen lying on a striped beach towel sans makeup.

"Not her natural habitat but she's trying her darnedest!!!" Dunham captioned the pic.

The actress, writer and director has been a strong proponent of body positivity and often shares images of herself in bikinis or underwear with her millions of followers on social media.

But even though she's doing her best to spread positive vibes, Dunham has faced her fair share of criticism and mean comments online. (It got so bad Dunham decided to hand over control of her Twitter account.)

Back in October, the Daily Mail called one of her outfits an "eyesore," which prompted her to hit back.

"What the Daily Mail calls an eyesore I call a damn dream, @marahoffman," she wrote on Instagram. "This onesie takes me from @tracyandersonmethod to brunch to fetal position and I couldn't feel more heroic."

You just keep doing you, Lena.

Striking Equinox Ad Puts Public Breastfeeding In The Spotlight

A striking new ad from Equinox Fitness features an image of a mother breastfeeding twins while dining at a restaurant.

The Equinox ad is part of a campaign called "Commit to Something," a collection of seven bold images by iconic fashion photographer Steven Klein.

According to a press release from the New York-based chain of fitness clubs, "Each of the seven images tells a different story about commitment." The nursing image is meant to depict "a young mother unapologetically breastfeeding in public."

The mom is portrayed by model and actress Lydia Hearst. "All vignettes are a virtuous expression of taking deliberate action and going 'all in,'" states the release.

Normalizing the sight of breastfeeding is a positive, but we'd like to think moms don't have to be wearing fancy jewelry to nurse in public.

We Can't Stop Designing Insane 18th-Century Wigs

The people at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London really want you to procrastinate -- in the name of 18th-century fashion.

Their new design-a-wig game lets you create ridiculous Marie Antoinette-esque sky-high hairstyles, complete with powder, gems and other absurd ornaments that are just begging to make a modern-day comeback.

The game is as easy as it is addicting: first, you create any ridiculous wig style you want by "combing" (scrolling) the hair in any direction. Then, you can throw on whichever decorations your heart desires.

"In the late 18th century, women's hair styles went crazy! Create and share your own hair-raising design," reads the game's instructions.

Challenge accepted, Victoria and Albert. Challenge. Accepted.

Apparently, the authentic human or horsehair wigs were built up with padding and pig fat. Sounds appealing, right?

Modern-day styles pale in comparison to these looks. Katy Perry gets crazy with color, and Lady Gaga achieves some serious volume. But why not experiment with a more historically classic look? May we suggest a ship, some fans, and a noggin full of the queen's jewels?

Here's hoping that this game inspires a new generation of hair styles, and 2016 becomes the year of the 18th century wig. Sayonara, man buns, you've overstayed your welcome anyway.

H/T Jezebel
