Connor Cruise Insists His Relationship With Nicole Kidman Is 'Solid'

0
0
Connor Cruise, the adopted son of Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman, is breaking his silence over rumors he's estranged from his mother.

"I love my [mom]. I don't care what people say," the 19-year-old told Australian magazine Women's Day. "I know that me and [mom] are solid. I love her a lot. My family means everything."

In the past, Kidman herself implied that her relationship with her children was strained, telling GMTV in 2007, "My kids don't call me mommy, they don't even call me mom. They call me Nicole, which I hate and tell them off for it."

Ever since Kidman divorced Tom Cruise in 2001, there have been rumors that the actress' relationship with her son and his sister Isabella have been strained because of their ties to the Church of Scientology, which is said to be one of the main reasons the two movie stars split.

Despite the rumors, Kidman has remained notoriously silent about Scientology since their split, and she didn't budge much when pressed by The Hollywood Reporter in 2013.

"I've chosen not to speak publicly about Scientology," Kidman said when probed. "I have two children who are Scientologists -- Connor and Isabella -- and I utterly respect their beliefs."

As for Isabella, she too contends her relationship with her mother is not what tabloid have made it out to be.

"I love mom. She's my mom. She's great. I see her sometimes and I speak to her," she told New Idea magazine in 2012. 'We’re a very close family. I love all of our family."

Mick Jagger 'Devastated' By Death Of Longtime Girlfriend L'Wren Scott

News of fashion designer and model L'Wren Scott's death has left Mick Jagger completely devastated, reports Us Weekly.

A spokesperson for the Rolling Stones frontman told the magazine that Jagger is "completely shocked and devastated by the news."

Scott was found dead in her Manhattan residence around 10 a.m. on Monday, March 17, by her assistant, according to the Daily News. While a cause of death has yet to be determined, the 47-year-old was found hanging from a scarf on a doorknob, and sources told the paper foul play is not suspected.

Jagger, who is currently on tour with the Rolling Stones in Australia, had been dating Scott since 2001.

Dear Media: L'Wren Scott Was Not Just 'Mick Jagger's Girlfriend'

When the awful news broke on Monday that fashion designer and model L'Wren Scott had been found dead in an apparent suicide, media-watchers began noticing a trend in the way that news outlets referred to Scott:

The fact that Scott was Jagger's partner is certainly a relevant part of the story of her death, but many on Twitter expressed their consternation that a successful and accomplished woman was being defined, in part, by the man

Isaac Mizrahi On The 'Right Way' For Fashion To Incorporate Plus-Size (VIDEO)

0

On a recent segment of HuffPost Live, fashion designer and "Project Runway: All Stars" judge Isaac Mizrahi had some insightful things to say about the term "plus-size" and its role in the fashion industry.

In response to a reader's question about the lack of contestants who "design for plus-size persons" on the hit competition show "Project Runway," Mizrahi explains why plus-size shouldn't really be a defining term in the first place.

"I don't want to speak to a plus-sized woman differently than I speak to a woman," he says, recounting stories of his childhood when he was constantly "ushered off to the husky section," which had some long-term emotional effects.

Mizrahi then talks about the "right way" that the fashion industry should be embracing various sizes. "I don't like segregation, I like incorporation, I like integration," he says when it comes to clothing. "If you're going to do clothes, you need to do them in a whole size range."

The designer mentions that QVC, the current distributor of his brand, is great about featuring his styles from XXS to 3XL. However, retail sites like ASOS and Forever 21 have separate plus-size sections, while stores like Lane Bryant and Torrid cater to customers who wear larger sizes.

J.Lo's 'I Luh Ya Papi' Video Attempts To Tear Down Sexism

0
0
Can half-naked men, a yacht and J.Lo's entourage destroy sexism in under six minutes?

Perhaps not, but at a time when Beyoncé is sampling a feminist activist's TEDx talk and Lily Allen is calling out music industry sexism, it comes as no surprise to see another female artist jump on the "cool feminist" bandwagon. Jennifer Lopez's latest music video, for "I Luh Ya Papi," attempts to turn the male gaze on its head with some good, old-fashioned, equal-opportunity objectification.

i luh ya papi

"If she was a dude, they would seriously have her up in a mansion with all these half-naked girls or maybe even in a yacht," J.Lo's backup dancers inform the white, male executive trying to pitch a video shoot at the carnival or the zoo. "Why do the men always objectify the women?"

As J.Lo's ladies imagine a video that begins with the pop star "on the bed with a bunch of naked guys for no reason," the actual video morphs into that fantasy, complete with male crotch and a** close-ups, a yacht party, a sexy personal car wash and lots and lots of washboard abs. It's like giving a big middle finger to the sexual objectification of women in music videos -- and it flips off the establishment with humor, instead of anger.

i luh ya papi

J.Lo's flip of the gender script works as a critique of pop culture sexism in many ways that Lily Allen's "Hard Out Here" fails. The storyline of the video is dictated by the women, and J. Lo's Latina backup dancers never become her props the way that the women of color featured in Allen's video do. Plus, there is something wonderful about seeing a mainstream pop star -- one who has been working within the confines of music industry sexism for decades -- explicitly call out a gender-based double standard.

But the video's empowering undertones really start to fall apart when rapper French Montana (whom one assumes to be J.Lo's "papi" in this scenario) enters the scene. With the entrance of a powerful male character, the scripts are immediately flipped back to normal, as J.Lo's backup dancers stop calling the shots, and are instead put into bikini tops and used as furniture. While men scrubbing down their abs and using their butts to wash J. Lo's car seem absurd, women of color clad in animal-print outfits doing a sexy dance around a fully-clothed male artist just look like more of the same.

i luh ya papi

As PolicyMic's Elizabeth Plank points out: "This is what happens when feminism becomes 'popular.' It's done imperfectly."

So, no, Lopez and her girl power entourage are not destroying sexism. But at least they're acknowledging it. And for now, we'll take what we can get, talk about it and demand better.

Buddha Mama: Positive Vibes Through Gold Jewelry

0
0
Buddha Mama is a jewelry line that is more than originally meets the eye. Each of Nancy Badia's beautiful pieces embodies a positive lifestyle. Besides creating exquisite fine jewelry pieces, Badia, the jewelry line's founder and designer instills Buddhist values and intricacies to each of her jewelry "babies." Each piece has her blessing with a bespoke design or symbolic meaning behind it. To reflect her philanthropic side, a portion of Buddha Mama's sales are donated to Kristi House and Zen Village.

2014-03-17-IMG_2414.jpg Lauren Kaminsky pictured with Nancy & Dakota of Buddha Mama

I learned all about this great line at their NYC Press Preview at the Peninsula Hotel. Nancy's daughter, Dakota, has caught the Buddha Mama "bug" as she has started to design as well. Both members of the mother/daughter duo are creating beautiful pieces of fine jewelry, and I could not believe the detail within each treasure.

I ogled as I tried on this high-carat rose gold-netted hand bracelet, as well as necklaces and bracelets embellished with Buddhist symbols.

2014-03-17-DSC_0019.JPG

In the photo below, Dakota is showing off some serious Buddha bling. Here she is holding a yellow gold rosary-like necklace with a diamond encrusted Buddha at the end (note: check out her awesome skull ring with gold teeth -- that is one of her own designs for the Buddha Mama collection).

2014-03-17-DSC_0022.JPG

Each of Buddha Mama's pieces features a level of detail that could only truly be appreciated up close. Every bead used in her work typically features an intricate design, which is usually the Dharma-wheel, Mandala, or Buddha. These symbols are seen quite frequently though-out the entire collection.

It is known in the industry that the best and most obvious way to judge the quality of a jewelry line is to see if it is just as beautiful on the backside as it is on its front. Here are two pictures: the first showing the front of a Buddha Mama bracelet and the following an image of the back.

Amanda Seyfried Covers April Issue Of W Magazine, Proves That More Is More

0

Well, everything we've ever known to be true about bold makeup feels a little outdated now.

Amanda Seyfried is the cover star of W Magazine's April issue and looks absolutely stunning in a Chanel bathing suit and jewels. More notably, however, is her dramatic eye/lip combo, which contradicts every "less is more" beauty lesson we've ever heard. We already know there are health benefits to wearing lipstick, so perhaps pairing bright lips with heavy eye makeup is even healthier? Probably unlikely, but we're willing to do the leg work to find out.

To read the interview with Seyfried, where she divulges about everything from her adorable pup to her affinity for sex scenes, head over to W Magazine.

This Stunning Home Is Exactly Why You Should Paint Your Apartment Black (PHOTOS)

If you consider yourself one of those people who wouldn't be caught dead using dark, moody paints, this apartment is ready to change your mind. From its luxurious accents and impressive artwork collection to its bookcased walls and urban modern lighting, one thing is absolutely certain -- black paint has never (ever) looked so fabulous.

And the wildest part? Before the bachelorette pad was transformed into the layered, chic space you see below, it was none other than a run-of-the-mill YMCA. The association reportedly sold the building in 2000 before it was divided into 12 apartments in 2003 -- one of which was purchased by the current owner, public speaker and advertising consultant, Cindy Gallop. With a little help from designer Stefan Boublil of The Apartment Creativity Agency, the well-traveled Gallop embarked on her two-year design journey during which she carefully selected the dark hue for the reason that "the art pops against it.”

“I had to build something from scratch, so I could do anything I wanted with it,” she said. “It is the first time I built something about me.”

But it doesn't have to be "about her" for long, as the impressive space has officially hit the market. In other words, for a cool $5.995 million the midtown abode can be all about you -- and who knows, that might just mean white walls instead. But in the meantime...

The black background makes any color pop. (And leopard, too.)

Countess Vaughn Reminds Us Of The Dangers Of Wigs And Weaves

0
0
It's been awhile since we've seen Countess Vaughn on our TV screen. However, the actress who is best known for her roles on "227," "Moesha" and "The Parkers" recently appeared on "The Doctors" to discuss her horrifying experience with lace front wigs.

After a five-year long love affair with the hair pieces that require constant application of wig glue to stay in place, Countess realized that she had developed a severe scalp infection. But because she couldn't accept that a wig could be causing such damage, the actress let the oozing and hair loss that resulted from the infection go on for six months before consulting a dermatologist.

"It's crazy how one day everything's fine then the next thing, the simplest thing, can mess up your life," Countess said while taping the CBS show.

Now the 35-year-old star uses eyeliner to fill in her diminished hairline and discolored skin, which many people assume is caused by vitiligo.

And Countess isn't the only celeb we've seen suffer a follicle fail. Supermodel Naomi Campbell and superstar athlete Serena Williams have also experienced similar hair loss issues thanks to the prolonged use of hairpieces. Furthermore, there have even been reported instances of death connected to the high toxic levels of hair glue.

“I was embarrassed, you have to be at home, and be bald,” Countess said while holding back tears. “I had to go through this to teach my little one that you have to love yourself before anyone else will.”

Check out the video clip above for Countess' full story.

Katy Perry Is Still Confused By Feminism, Despite Her Best Efforts

0

Katy Perry is making progress, but a new interview with Australian morning show "I Wake Up With Today" proves she still hasn't completely figured out what constitutes feminism.

Like many other celebrities, Perry has never really been clear on the definition or comfortable calling herself the F-word. Back in 2012, she told Billboard magazine, "I am not a feminist, but I do believe in the strength of women." Flash forward two years later to March 16, 2014 when host Karl Stefanovic asked Perry if she considers herself a feminist, with the pop star giving a slightly different response.

"A feminist? Uh, yeah, actually," she said. "I used to not really understand what that word meant, and now that I do, it just means that I love myself as a female and I also love men."

Uh, Katy? It's great that you feel that way, but that's not what the word feminism means. We know you're trying so we're going to help you out. HuffPost's Social Community Editor Rebecca Searles created this handy guide back in 2013 that not only explains the concept of feminism, but will help you figure out if you're a feminist in two easy steps:

Guy In Yoga Pants Pranks Creepy Dudes (Again)

Who has the better butt? As this video demonstrates, it depends on the pants.

Earlier this month, in a video titled "Yoga Pants Prank," YouTube prankster Yousef Saleh Erakat documented what women have to put up with sometimes when they wear yoga pants. Now he's back with "Yoga Pants Prank 2," and this time he has a female accomplice to sell the ruse.

In it, Erekat's unnamed female co-host stops male passersby to ask who has the better butt, pointing out her own posterior while Erekat, also in yoga pants, bends over and shields his face. When bystanders make questionable or lewd comments (one guy even asks to feel both butts), Erekat turns around, playfully confronting them.

Attention Women Entrepreneurs: The Corporate Boardroom Isn't a Fashion Bored-Room!

0
0
There are many examples of successful female entrepreneurs. From Mary Barra, the first female CEO of General Motors, to small business entrepreneurs pitching their companies to wealthy investors on ABC's "Shark Tank," more women today are walking into corporate America with confidence.

But women who decide to start a small business in midlife are sometimes faced with the challenge of what to wear. They may believe that being an entrepreneur eliminates fashion decisions until their first presentation to investors, clients or prospective business partners forces them to think twice about their style choices. Wealthy businessmen like Mark Cuban or Mark Zuckerberg may dress in a more laid-back fashion, but this isn't appropriate for the female executive trying to make a favorable impression. She wants to adopt a style that is serious, yet still find outfits that represent who she is an a businesswoman without losing her individuality -- or spending a fortune.

A man who owns a small business may be able to get away with a good suit, some nice shirts, and a few striped ties when needed, but women need to be more creative. They want to look professional and fashionable, without being boring. Budget can also be a challenge for the female entrepreneur who is just starting out, and doesn't have a lot of money to spend.

Denise Shaefer, co-owner of A'maree's, a fashion boutique in Newport Beach, CA, advises clients to think ahead when first assembling their boardroom wardrobe. "I advise female entrepreneurs to think of their clothing as an investment," she commented. "When they find the perfect piece in our store it will often stay in their closet for 20 years. You're making an investment in yourself and your business, and want something that is going to be durable, stylish, professional and flexible."

Start With The Fashion Basics

Based on her 38+ years of fashion industry experience, Denise says every woman should own a silk and cotton shirt, along with the perfect blazer. Similar to a man's "well-tailored suit," these fashion basics always look good and aren't subject to the whims of fashion. She notes that the way to keep an outfit fresh and unique is by adding a favorite accessory, like a belt or earrings. These personal touches can make the outfit feel truly finished. One affordable fashion tip is to keep the accessories updated. For example, if you tend to wear the same belt, think about investing in a new belt as the seasons change and the look automatically changes with it.

Denise believes that boardroom fashion doesn't have to be boring. "It's not just about fashion; it's about people," she emphasized. "It's about empowering women to make fashion choices that 'feel like you' and represent who you are, not some corporate automaton. You want to walk into the corporate world dressed appropriately, but without losing your sense of individuality and uniqueness."

Smart fashion choices for the woman just starting her own small business can lay a solid foundation for a lifetime of corporate fashion success. Don't fall victim to the latest trends, but think instead in terms of building outfits that can mix and match easily, and withstand the test of time. Look for unique accessories that can make the difference between beautiful and boring, and keep those in style as the seasons change.

As your business grows, set aside a small amount of your income and slowly begin to add options to your wardrobe that will enhance your professional look, while still allowing you to be the unique individual you are.

British Vogue Editor Alexandra Shulman Says No One Wants To See 'Real' People On The Cover

0
0
Well, it looks like Alexandra Shulman wins the gold medal for honesty/disappointing news this week.

The Telegraph reports that in an interview with BBC Radio 2, the longtime editor of British Vogue admitted that people would rather look at photos of thin, "unrealistic"-looking models than photos of "normal" people.

While she argues that designers should be making their sample sizes larger, she feels there is a certain element of fantasy that readers are drawn to when it comes to reading a glossy mag. "People don't want to buy a magazine like Vogue to see what they see when they look in the mirror. They can do that for free," she said.

The statement seems a bit contradictory when you consider the fact that Nigella Lawson is the cover star of their April issue, and supposedly is wearing "no makeup." Of course, the struggle to stay creatively interesting while maintaining steady sales is a reality they have had to deal with many times.

Still, it is a hard reality to face considering the ratio of models to ... everyone else in the world. Vogue is a resource of beautiful fashion, but it is also a place for all lovers of style -- not just the ones who are a size 0 -- to draw outfit inspiration from.

We'll have to wait and see what comes next from the mag (and the entire industry for that matter). In the meantime, we can always check out those untouched Aerie ads to satisfy our "realness" cravings.

Why Lady Gaga Should Respect Demi Lovato

0
0
I was crabby on Sunday. Work has been crazy lately and having two little kids does not help the sleep cause.

My wife realized this so she told me to go to the gym before work. That usually takes the crab out of me. I really wanted to take a nap instead. I knew there was no way I would be able to nap so I did go to the gym. I went on the elliptical machine and started to workout.

While I was on I started to scroll through Facebook on my phone to look for some interesting things to read. Every story seemed to be "8 things blah blah blah" or "I am this state, what state are you?" or some Buzzfeed "I just took this quiz and I am Webster from Webster" poll.

Then one post popped out. It was not like the others to me at that moment. Here was the headline:

"Demi Lovato Rails Against Lady Gaga For Glamorizing Eating Disorders"

I am going to be honest. It was not the headline I was expecting to see. I do not know much about Demi Lovato except that she is a pop star, she has battled eating disorders and she punched someone one time. I do not know much about Lady Gaga except she wore a meat dress, she has a billion fans called "Little Monsters" and she is an artist...not a pop singer.

So I was expecting Demi Lovato to be all "cray cray" against Lady Gaga.

I read the story. Then I Googled Demi Lovato. Every title had it where she blasted, slammed or yelled at Lady Gaga.

That is not what I got out of the story at all.

What I did not expect is to see a pretty courageous story. And that Demi Lovato is a role model.

Last week Lady Gaga performed at the SWSX convention. During the performance she was strapped to a barbeque spit and rotated over a simulated flame. Stubb's Barbeque was a sponsor. Then towards the end during a song called "Swine," artist Millie Brown, known to drink colorful liquid and then vomit on canvas, drank green and black fluid and vomited on Lady Gaga.

The performance was sponsored by Doritos. Doritos, the powerful tortilla chips that unlocks bold and unique flavors. Whether it is "Cool Ranch" or "Zesty Nacho," go get you a bag!

When I saw it I thought it was gross. I am just being honest; I thought that I would not want to be vomited on in the name of art. But art is different for everyone. What is beautiful for one might not be for another. You do not have to love art but I do appreciate it all.

I also felt that it was "Lady Gaga being Lady Gaga" and she does this stuff all the time. She is outrageous. That is why she is as popular as she is. She had a meat dress and she performed with R. Kelly.

There are many people who are talented that do not have 40 million Twitter followers. She has that "it" factor. She is an icon for doing what she does on stage.

Demi Lovato did not see it like that.

She saw it as something she used to do. It brought back memories. She has publicly admitted that she has and been treated for eating disorders. She is very vocal about how serious eating disorders are and rightfully so. She saw Lady Gaga's performance as glamorizing eating disorders. That a young girl who is throwing up in the bathroom because she is "fat" will think that it is okay because a popular icon has someone throwing up on stage. It is a passionate topic for Demi, so she made a passionate response.

She went on Twitter, where she basically promotes her performances and VEVO videos and spoke her mind.

Screen Shot 2014-03-18 at 12.38.39 PM

Her view is not the majority. While most people would find vomiting gross and disgusting, very few would see it as glamorizing an eating disorder. Very few even commented about it except that it was gross.

It sparked something in her. She knew that if she went up against an icon, people would talk about her past. Talk about her and how she has "no talent" and all of those "Little Monsters" would defend their idol.

I know. I wrote about Justin Bieber once and a lot of preteens called me a "Swollen Vagina" on social media.

She knew people would tell her to "Chill out, this is not about you." They would tell her that this is the problem with America, we always complain about everything and this is why our kids will grow up to be "wusses." She knew that people would call her a bully because people feel that when you disagree with something it is bullying. It is not. She knew that people with made up names and avatars would do what they could to make her feel like crap.

She said what I am sure others wanted to say. Yet, very few did. She did not "slam" Lady Gaga like the media portrayed it. She did not "blast" her either. She did not really say anything negative about her and at the end even told her she was a fan. She basically spoke her mind and said that what she did on stage was not cool. She basically said that from her viewpoint, that was not cool.

And after that moment, in my eyes, she was a great role model. Not because I or others really agree with her, but she stood up for something that others might not see. She did not care if the majority agreed with her. She did it in a respectful way, and she brought more awareness to the cause she was fighting. That is why some are talking about it today.

The artist has responded and told Demi to "chill out." Lady Gaga has not responded.

Honestly, I hope that Lady Gaga does respond in a respectful way as well.

Because that is what made her a role model today. Courage.

Emma Watson has mastered the art of looking both classy and sexy at the same time.

The 23–year–old was gorgeous as she stepped onto the red carpet in Madrid at the Spanish premiere of her film, "Noah," on Monday, March 17. Wearing not–your–typical pant suit, Watson sported a J. Mendel look consisting of black pants and a low-cut white top.

Watson plays the role of Ila in the upcoming film with a star–studded cast that includes Russell Crowe and Jennifer Connelly. Even more impressive? Looking appropriate for a biblical movie premiere in a plunging neckline.

Why Allison Williams Is In No Rush To Plan Her Wedding

0

Sometimes brides-to-be get so caught up in wedding planning that they forget to have fun being engaged.

That's not the case for "Girls" star Allison Williams. Her fiancé, Ricky Van Veen, popped the question in February, but the actress says she's not even close to the planning stages.

“Literally, we have not even started thinking about the logistics of the wedding," she told People Magazine. "It’s so funny, even my friends are like, ‘So, ballpark, just tell me what time of year, just in case I travel,’ and I have no idea.”

But not knowing is actually a good thing, as it's given the 25-year-old a chance to enjoy the ride.

"As of now, it just exists as this hypothetical thing that will happen eventually. And none of it has started to become real yet. So eventually that’ll become things that we’re concerned with. But for now, it’s just the fun part,” she said.

You know what else is fun? Her giant, sparkly engagement ring.

Well done Van Veen. Well done.
