Move over Pharrell, there's a new hat wearer in town, and her name is Grumpy Cat.

The frowning feline knocked it out of the park when she arrived on the red carpet at the 2014 MTV Awards in what we can only assume is a piece from Vivienne Westwood's new cat-inspired collection. And we have to say, there was something different about her. Perhaps the grumpy gal was even feeling a bit ... "Happy"?

Grumpy Cat finished off the look with pretty much nothing else besides her famous scowl. After all, she's a cat.

We're not saying that the cat wore it better than Mr. Williams. But we're not not saying it, either. See it for yourself below!

If this is what Rihanna wears behind closed doors when she's with her rumored boo Drake, then we know exactly why the emo rapper is so sprung.

Riri showed up at the 2014 MTV Movie Awards sporting a pale pink satin robe, bodysuit and nude ankle-strap heels. The lingerie-inspired look was utterly sexy and showed off the "Monster" singer's gorgeous gams. Diamond jewelry, bedhead hair and neutral makeup completed Rihanna's red carpet outfit.

Mila Kunis looked lovely at the 2014 MTV Movie Awards on Sunday, April 13, in Los Angeles.

The 30-year-old actress wore a loose-fitting black dress as she took to the stage to accept her award for Best Villain in "Oz the Great and Powerful."

"Listen, you guys, you just made my 12-year-old self dream come true," she said during her speech. "This is by far the coolest award and I just realized I was the only woman nominated and I won!"

Where Lucy Became a Redhead and Marilyn Became a Blonde: Historic Max Factor Building Chronicles Hollywood Beauty Biz

There's a magical quality about movie stars from the Golden Age of Hollywood. As part of the studio system, women would receive complete makeovers and regular beauty regimes to match up with the reputation the studio wanted to build around them. If a young hopeful was signed, hair and makeup were paramount to her success. A lion's share of those glamour gal makeovers took place at the Max Factor Building, which is now a must-see museum at North Highland and Hollywood Boulevard.

A classic film buff, I was determined to add this museum to my itinerary on my recent trip to Hollywood. From the moment I entered, I was greeted with Art Deco grandeur. Bathed in pink, the great room features marble and gold columns, built-in shelving lined with memorabilia, and vitrines filled with vintage Max Factor beauty products and paraphernalia.

Blondes to the Left, Redheads to the Right

Beyond the impressive lobby are four beauty chambers labeled: "For Redheads Only," "For Blondes Only," "For Brunettes Only," and "For Brownettes Only." While some entered to have their hair and make up aligned, others were completely transformed.

Most people know that one of Hollywood's most famous redheads, Lucille Ball, was actually not a redhead at all. She became one at Max Factor. It's also where Marilyn Monroe went from 'brownette' to blonde.

Each room contains photos of stars that got the Max Factor treatment, and while all four are fantastic, I really loved the "Redheads Only" chamber. Photos of some of my favorites, including Barbara Stanwyck, Ann Sheridan and Rita Hayworth lined the walls. Of course, Lucille Ball took center stage. While many Hollywood stars became redheads at Max Factor, Lucy was probably the most famous in that both her overall hair color and make up combination was created here.

To add to the fun, a 1950s TV set plays the famous "Vitameatavegamin" episode of I Love Lucy on repeat, and an original setting of Lucy Ricardo's china (Franciscan's Ivy pattern) is on display. On another screen, footage of Lucy holding court as head of Desilu Productions shows her looking lovely as a businesswoman.

The "Blondes Only" chamber includes a bustier worn by Marilyn Monroe in How to Marry a Millionaire and an article revealing her beauty secrets. There's also a contraption known as the "Beauty Micometer," which looks like something out of a futuristic torture chamber. It is a helmet of sorts that was designed to assess a woman's face from all angles and contours. Because the screen could easily magnify any flaw, this device sought to seek them out and offer makeup solutions for them

A Brief History on Max Factor

Just as with any museum visit, this trip gave me the opportunity to learn about history, invention and inspirational people. Until I visited, my only association with Max Factor was recalling Jaclyn Smith say "Thanks, Max" in those sassy 1980s commercials she did for the cosmetic line, which showed gratitude for its founder. I knew the products had a long history in Hollywood, but I had no idea how long or how Max Factor, the man, revolutionized the cosmetics industry.

Long before his beauty products were available to the masses, Max Factor made his mark on Hollywood in the early days of cinema. A Polish immigrant, Factor began by creating custom-made wigs and makeup for the movies. Theatrical makeup didn't translate well from stage to screen, so Factor came up with what he called "flexible greasepaint," which revolutionized the industry because it didn't crack.

Factor was also famous for personally applying makeup to Hollywood stars to ensure they looked their absolute best on screen. Gloria Swanson, Joan Crawford, Jean Harlow, Bette Davis, Judy Garland and a bevy of others all got the personal treatment.

As such many of these stars endorsed Max Factor cosmetics for little money, in exchange for publicity for their latest film. Many of these stars were regulars at the salon, where even non-celebrity clientele would get the Hollywood treatment.

Catty Quips and Digs Abound

As immortalized in the 1939 Classic The Women, beauty parlors are famous breading grounds for gossip. As such, interspersed with the cosmetic and costume displays are some juicy framed quotes from silver screen queens. Here are three of my favorites:

Only two people in Hollywood I ever wanted to meet: Garbo and Mae West. Now I've met them both, and I can go home and lie down.

-- Bette Davis

Don't think I don't know who's been spreading gossip about me and my temperament out there in Hollywood, where that film was made

-- All About Me [All About Eve]

And after all the nice things I've said about that hag, Bette Davis. When I get a hold of her, I'll tear out every hair of her mustache!

-- Tallulah Bankhead

I don't hate Bette Davis even though the press wants me to. I resent her -- I don't see how she built a career out of a set of mannerisms instead of real acting ability. Take away the pop eyes, the cigarette, and those funny clipped words and what have you got? She's phony, but I guess the public likes that.

-- Joan Crawford

2014-04-14-BetteQuote.jpg

The Max Factor Legacy

When Max Factor died in 1938, his company was at the height of its success. His son took over the business and continued its reputation as an innovator and leader in the cosmetic industry.

Milestones included a kiss-proof lipstick (actual kissing machines were made to test its endurance), a line of camouflage makeup that was used during WWII, a male line of products; fragrances, and eventually special industry lines created for television.

Most of all, it seems, Max Factor revolutionized the beauty industry. He turned "brownette" starlets into "redhead" and "blonde" stars. He synchronized hair and makeup for the perfect look. Above all, he paved the way for every woman to look like a celebrity.

2014-04-14-MFChair.jpg

The Hollywood Museum

The Max Factor Building holds much more than the history of beauty that unfolded underneath its roof. It's also home to the Hollywood Museum, and as such, it really contains something for everyone. There's a dungeon that contains shrines to Freddy Kruger and Hannibal Lecter, with original costumes and ephemera. On other floors there are wardrobe and props from television shows like Mad Men, The Walking Dead and The Beverly Hillbillies.

More to my liking...there are some great items like Cary Grant's Rolls Royce, gowns worn by Greta Garbo and Jean Harlow, and a room of photographs of stars gathering at awards ceremonies and watering holes like The Brown Derby. One of the wildest exhibits is actor Roddy McDowell's entire guest bathroom, which was lined with photos and memorabilia from his favorite silver screen colleagues.

For fans of classic Hollywood, the building, the makeup studios and the overall museum are sensory overload and an absolute delight. I will undoubtedly return, because I couldn't possibly absorb everything in one go-round. (Did I mention there's an original pair of the ruby slippers on display?). In fact, the helpful guide told me that exhibits rotate, so there's always something new to see. I'm only hoping next time I can get a gander at that kissing machine.

Aaron Paul loves photobombing people almost as much as he loves Coachella (it's where he met and shared his first kiss with his wife, Lauren Parsekian).

Naturally, when the time came for his two loves to intertwine, the "Breaking Bad" star did not waste the opportunity. On Saturday, April 12, an unsuspecting couple was just trying to take a selfie when Paul totally photobombed them a few rows back. And because it's the celebrity mecca that is Coachella, you can see actor Kellan Lutz managed to sneak himself into the photo, too.

The couple shared the photo on Reddit on Sunday, and now the Internet loves Aaron Paul just a little more.

Spring Style for Your Style: How to Wear Spring's Fashion Trends Your Way

$
0
0
It's spring time and that means a whole new array of fashion and style items to update your closet and look. It doesn't matter what age or stage you are in life, a few fresh pieces of what's new from stores and brands can put a chic spin on your step as warmer weather hits. While it might seem that the key trends are just for the fashion forward consumer, there's always a way to work what's hot in the market your way. After all, fashion and style is meant to be all about you.

The full skirt, or the 'party skirt,' is one of spring fashion's most popular new companion this year. It has a the classic fit at the waist with a full bodice that can varying in volume and length to fit any taste, body type or look. It tends to be best paired with a fitted top to balance out its big statement, but that doesn't mean you've got to go with the classic fitted cardigan. T-shirts, including those with a bit of a rocker edge, detailing or other element, can work just fine with this item. Halter tops, tank tops, and even cropped tops for those who dare to bare a little skin at the midriff can work too. Your shoe choices are equally workable -- flats, low heels, ankle straps, strappy sandals, wedges, etc. can all work. There's nothing wrong with experimenting with boots for this item -- play with ideas to get your own personal look. While you'll find this item at all kinds of price points, ranging from investment pieces to fast fashion, it doesn't take breaking the bank to bring it into your look. Online retailer eShakti has a range of styles at the mid-range price point. H&M has some options for those who are looking for a super deal.

Speaking of boots, the spring and summer boot, cut ultra short to the ankle, is keeping pace as a casual footwear go-to. Brought to market first by designers like Isabel Marant, it's a pared down boot style that can work for spring jeans, shorts, skirts, dresses and pants for your casual weekends out and about or having lunch with friends. Watch the shaft height on your pick with this item -- where it hits on the leg can either elongate or shorten the proportions of your look. While this piece can range from ultra-boho and casual, you'll find more polished and classic styles as well. Dozens of fashion brands at all price points offers this piece -- Old Navy has a few styles for the budget conscious, and the choices go up from there.

If it's not your cup of tea, the other big footwear trend for the season is the mule, which has gotten a chic and sophisticated update with modern styling, interesting details and a range of casual to dress looks. Heels are higher than the mule styles of the past, including a lot of wedges which are most on trend this year for this item. You'll want to work with the mule as you would any other basic shoe in your closet - pretend as if it is a neutral and wear it with whatever you want, day or evening. Clothing brand Vince, which expanded into footwear a few years ago, has some really cool mule choices for your spring looks.

When it comes to accessories for spring, jewelry has continued to reign the roost. The statement necklace, now many seasons as an 'it' item has waned a bit, but you'll still find any past pieces going strong as this is ultimately a classic fashion piece any year. The arm full of bracelets combined in a dizzying display has moved to the fingertips for a lot of fashion enthusiasts. The look is intentionally overloaded -- with knuckle rings mixed in along with multiple styles on several fingers. Don't be afraid to keep it simple or go big -- the key is to have more than one finger adorned with a ring to get this look. If you haven't caught the Bauble Bar bug for well priced, trendy jewelry, it's a must-visit.

While skinny jeans never go out of style, the soft pant is a huge player for spring this year. Cuts and styles play on the tapered vibe that champions the skinny pant, but rather than tight fabric through the hip, the look is loose and easy with the right amount of fit and flow. Fabrics tend to be in the rayon family, but you'll find cottons and even fleece choices that can work just as well. This pant is so popular you'll find styles nearly at most stores and most price points. Shopbop.com has a big variety including a great range of fabric choices, too.

If the moto-jacket has grown tired in your closet, there are quite a bit of new choices coming into the picture for jackets this season. Bolero cuts and bombers in soft and simple fabrics are a good go-to to update your look.

Emma Stone wowed (once again) on the red carpet while promoting "The Amazing Spider-Man 2: Rise of Electro" in Rome, Italy on Monday, April 14.

The redheaded beauty rocked a glittery Valentino skirt which she paired with a black bra and see-through top, also by Valentino. The blouse featured a big bow at the collar.

“My mom always told me to do what makes me happy and dress for me. I was lucky, when I was young, to have a female role model in my life that was very much about me being myself," Stone told Cosmopolitan of her thoughts on style critics. "And with beauty and fashion, it’s supposed to be fun and experimental. I like the individuality of it all.”

Well, Emma has obviously never had a problem displaying her individuality on the red carpet.

Frances Bean Cobain Hits Up Coachella With Fiance Isaiah Silva

Frances Bean Cobain was noticeably absent from Nirvana's induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on Thursday, April 10. The 21-year-old old couldn't make the event because she was ill, according to her mother, Courtney Love. Cobain appeared to have made a full recovery by Sunday, when she was spotted at Coachella with her fiance, Rambles frontman Isaiah Silva.

Perhaps the most clothed celebrity at the festival Cobain, dressed in leggings and an oversized black t-shirt, stood out in a sea of girls wearing flowers in their hair and jean shorts that could double as underwear. Meanwhile, Silva's unkempt shoulder-length hair and layered cardigans will undoubtedly spur comparisons to Cobain's late father Kurt, but aside from embracing the grunge look, we can't say we really see it.

Let's All Rethink Our Bra Choices This Spring

After a long, gray winter, you couldn’t be more ready for spring. But is your wardrobe prepared? Sure, it’s great to get a jump on the latest trends, but have you thought about what to rock under your fresh seasonal duds? Take the change in season as an opportunity to rejuvenate your underthings, keeping in mind your unique shape, style and activities.

The right bra is everything, so let’s take a look at five key factors that affect your best bra choices.

FACTOR #1: FIT
While this isn’t exactly new news (we’ve long stressed the importance of the right bra fit), spring presents a renewed chance to finally find your perfect (bra) match.

tape measure woman

Larger busts: The large-busted ladies among us often struggle to find a bra that supports and flatters. The wrong undergarments can lead to unsightly and uncomfortable results: straps cutting into shoulders, or even worse, cups cutting into the top of breast tissue, leading to odd-looking spillage. The solution? A bra that features full cups to provide extra coverage, strapping in your bust in for an overall smoother shape. Bottom line: No more quad-boob.

Try: The Perfect Coverage Bra

Smaller busts: Meanwhile, ladies with more modest busts often bemoan their lack of natural cleavage during tank-top season. But the truth is that smaller breasts are perhaps the easiest to manage -- they simply don't require as much support as their larger counterparts. That said, finding the right fit is still important for smaller-breasted women, as a lack of proper support can ultimately lead to unnecessary sagging.

FACTOR #2: SHAPE
We’ll admit it: we’ve been rocking bulky sweaters for an awfully long time. So long, in fact, that we’ve totally forgotten how much shaping our breasts really matters – that is, until sheer white T-shirt season swings back around.

sheer white shirt

Don’t worry. All is not lost. Women with shapely concerns can seek assistance from bras that have both push-up AND full-coverage functionality for an added lift plus a sculpted shape.

FACTOR #3: SUPPORT
While renewed attention to your bra fit and shape are paramount, we can’t forget about lift and support! After all, warmer weather means bare legs, open-toed shoes, and of course, plunging necklines.

friends laughing summer

Push-up bras aren’t just for teenagers; all kinds of busts can benefit from the extra lift they provide, and padded versions can help push breasts up and together, creating the effect of a round, perky and slightly larger bust.

Try: The Push Up Bra

FACTOR #4: ACTIVITY
That tattered old sports bra you’ve been rocking on the elliptical all winter isn’t going to cut it for higher-impact outdoor activities like jogging.

jogging woman

Go ahead and embrace a new fitness routine, but make sure you have the right bra to go the distance. A supportive, stylish sports bra can make all the difference, especially for larger-breasted women.

Try: The Stand Out Sports Bra

FACTOR #5: FASHION
Finally: your bra should not only support your bust, but your daring fashion choices as well. Even if full-on strapless isn’t your thing, a dynamic multi-way bra can be a great option to accommodate the full spectrum of sexy, strappy spring styles.

shoulders

Bottom line: No matter what your cup size, there’s a option to allow you to flaunt your gorgeous bare shoulders.

7 Mistakes That Kill New Friendships

$
0
0
When I've talked with women (and men) about the challenges they face making friendships, I commonly hear that the hardest part is not always meeting people. Instead, it's the difficulty of turning those occasional, chance meetings into something resembling a relationship. What's the magic formula for turning an acquaintance into a friend? How do you build a friendship with the person you chat with at the gym -- without seeming like a stalker? And, why do some friendships never get off the ground, despite putting forth your best efforts? Certain roadblocks pop up over and over again, common behaviors we do without thinking about it. These mistakes may single-handedly keep your friendships from taking off. Here are seven of those missteps that can easily ruin a burgeoning friendship -- and keep you forever banished to the acquaintance-zone.

1. Not Asking Questions or Following Up
It can be like being caught in some small-talk purgatory: You see someone all the time, but you never edge past a discussion about the weather -- which, let me guess, has been crazy. But, are you showing an interest in their lives by asking (not too intrusive) questions and paying attention to the answers? If you're not giving the other person the opportunity to express themselves within a conversation, then you're simply having a soliloquy without the stage makeup. Ask questions, show genuine interest in the responses and follow up the next time you see each other. Then, and only then, are you building a foundation for a true, personal friendship to grow on.

2. Breaking Confidences
You might feel so honored to have been told something juicy that your new friend revealed that you can't help but tip your hand to another friend about it. Or, maybe you didn't really think that something was as sensitive as it was, and it didn't really dawn on you that you shouldn't share it. Either way, you're already putting cracks in the building blocks of trust and intimacy that are needed to form a genuine relationship, whether they find out about your loose lips or not.

3. Letting One Mistake Paralyze You
So you made a joke you shouldn't have, or you forgot to have your phone on when she was supposed to call you to meet up. Sometimes when a friendship is in the early stages, one false move can feel like a death sentence for the relationship. But, it is usually how you handle the mistake that has the lasting impact, not the mistake itself. A gracious and specific apology and a true effort not to let it happen again usually does the trick quite nicely to get the friendship back on track. On the other hand, being so embarrassed that you do a disappearing act will likely kill a friendship much more quickly than whatever mistake you made.

4. Being Pushy or Overly Indecisive About Plans
So, you're finally at the stage where maybe you'll have a smoothie after a workout with someone, a drink after work with a colleague or a barbecue with that other family after swim practice. Maybe you squander this by being too pushy -- it must be at this particular place, you can't stand this particular food, you can't stay a moment later than such-and-such particular time. Friendships flourish when both parties are looking to make the process as easy and natural as possible. Setting up a bunch of rigid parameters will only make the potential friend wonder if you're worth the effort. And, if you're on the opposite end of the spectrum, refusing to pick a restaurant, despite their asking thrice? Saying, "Whatever works for you" 17 times when they actually could use some help with the logistics may also make them think that building a relationship with you requires a bit too much effort.

5. Trying Too Hard to Impress
It's an understandable impulse; building a friendship is a lot like dating, after all, and the temptation to extol your own virtues or to name-drop can be hard to resist. But nothing says "insecure" like your fourth mention of once having dated Matt Damon's third cousin. Bear in mind that research shows we generally tend to like people who are not too self-enhancing, because we view them as more honest and more authentic. Constantly inflating yourself could move you into competition-mode, which is much more conducive to building 'frenemies' than friendships.

6. Gossiping Too Much
Some people think that any talk about other people is always a bad thing. As someone who ponders human behavior for a living -- and who has spent more time opining on celebrity break-ups than I care to admit -- I find that unrealistic. Sometimes, a discussion about others can serve as a sort of social glue to help build community and it doesn't always have to be malevolent. But, of course, some of it can be truly toxic. When you're talking about others to make them look bad, directly or indirectly, it's only going to make your new friend wonder what you're saying about her behind her own back -- and whether she might be better off backing away.

7. Missing Cues
The very best friends are the ones who are empathetic, responsive and sensitive to their friends' needs. Not taking a hint that this week is a really bad time to meet, that a certain topic is uncomfortable for them to talk about or that they don't quite share your renegade views about income tax can turn you into, at best, a chafing presence, or worst, a steamrolling nightmare. Listen. Observe. Make eye contact. Notice body language. Respond accordingly. Sometimes, we're so caught up in what to say to a new friend that it makes us forget: it depends on what we hear from them in the first place.

Put down the wine and get your fish and chips ready, because the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show is going across the pond this year.

The big show usually takes place in New York, with some instances of Miami, Los Angeles and Cannes, but on December 2 the Angels will be showing off the latest lingerie at Earls Court in London. Models Adriana Lima and Candice Swanepoel announced the news today at New Bond Street and already we're wondering about who will walk this show.

According to Vogue UK, Cara Delevingne has been asked to walk the VS runway -- but only time will tell. To be honest, we're still sad that Miranda Kerr won't be our favorite Angel anymore.

Recently, everyone has been talking about what a style icon Emma Watson is. The British babe has shed her "Harry Potter" image in favor of something a little more sophisticated ... or has she?

Though the Internet seems to think that Watson's fashion chops are new, it seems like the actress' style choices haven't changed that much. And we have proof.

In honor of her 24th birthday, we're taking a look at her style back in the day, compared to what she is wearing now. And trust us, things haven't really changed...

Though she never blends in, Watson has been a fan of camouflage for some time now.

What Your Shoes Are Really Doing To Your Feet

$
0
0
There are few accessories that excite women quite like shoes. Not only are they the key to transforming an outfit, but is there any item in your closet that can make you feel sexier? Of course, there's also a flip side: Is there any accessory that can cause as much suffering as uncomfortable footwear? And hobbling around in misery (or worse, going barefoot in public because you can't stand the pain) isn't exactly cute!

Since women are affected by foot problems four times more than men, Dr. Suzanne Levine, celebrity podiatrist and author of "My Feet Are Killing Me " stresses the importance of taking care of our tootsies -- and not just for the sake of looking good. "Our feet are a foundation," she says, "and the way we dress them influences the way we feel." With an entire chapter devoted to shoe sense, Dr. Levine walks us through how different sole styles affect our health and why many of us are shopping all wrong.

Stilettos

stiletto on foot close up

With an average height of thee to five inches, stilettos can surely lengthen your legs and even make them appear thinner, but Levine warns that they shouldn't be worn for an extended period of time. "Since there's not a lot of structure, your weight can't rest on the heel, and that puts pressure on the ball of the foot," she explains. Not only do your feet start to hurt, but you've got a greater chance of falling. "Stilettos are limousine shoes," advises Levine, "walk into a party or wear them to dinner, but they're not the type of shoes that should be used long distance -- they're not the type to function." Her tip: Go for high-fashion shoes, but always bring a backup pair. Alternating heel heights will ensure you're not overusing any one muscle group.

Pumps

shoes

Pumps may be a bit more practical and offer more support than stilettos thanks to a thicker and often shorter heel, but they're still not exactly an all-day shoe. In addition to having a change handy, Levine suggests above all else to be certain the shoe fits ... because no matter how pretty it is, sporting the wrong size can get nasty -- from hammer toes and bunions to ingrown toenails and blisters. "Shoes are supposed to match the anatomy of the foot," adds Levine, "the ball of the foot should rest on the widest part."

Platforms

platform shoe foot

While your feet may feel flatter and more secure in platform shoes than in heels, the danger with these is that you're far from the ground and one false step could lead to an ankle sprain. To be safe, Levine points out that there should be a half-inch of space between your longest toe and shoe's edge, so do check for that when trying them on. "Stand up, make sure you can wiggle your toes and definitely walk around the store in them," she says, including that your best bet to determine your shoe size is to be measured by a professional.

Mules

Mules can be open or closed toe, high heeled or flat -- but they are always backless. "They shouldn't be anyone's go-to shoe," notes Levine. From cramping to heel cracks, this style can be problematic because there's nothing in place to hold the heel bone in the proper position and you're forced to grip the shoe with your toes. When shopping, Levine says it's important to be honest with yourself: "The most gorgeous pair of shoes can easily make you forget your comment sense, so be careful."

Sandals

flip flop beach feet

Nothing screams summer like a pair of sandals that let your toes have their moment. Although a warm weather staple, Levine recommends you "save them for the beach and pool" instead of rocking shoes like flip-flops in the real world. Not only do they offer little arch support, but their open design leaves feet vulnerable to hazards from the street ... and nobody wants cuts and bruises, bacteria and fungus or dryness and callouses to cloud an otherwise sunny day!

Flats

Believe it or not, "a shoe with no heel is not always the best heel," says Levine, "the ideal shoe is the lowest heel you can wear with comfort." From ballet flats to loafers, it can be tricky to find shoes that are supportive and chic, but overall, Levine advises that shoes with rubber soles in a breathable fabric are what your feet really want. Regardless of the style, remember this: You should never have to break in shoes -- if they don't fit right away, don't leave the store with them in tow.

Sneakers

"The key with sneakers is to make sure they're appropriate for whatever sport you're doing," says Levine. That means you shouldn't get too carried away with things like lights or neon colors, as athletic shoes are not the shoes to choose for fashion. The wrong shoes can do a number to your back, knees and hips, so think about if there's enough cushion and bring your own socks so you can test them out they way you'll actually be wearing them.

Perhaps Levine's most solid advice through it all is to simply ask yourself if the shoe feels good. "Sometimes it's the last thing we consider!" she says. Since no one shoe is appropriate for every occasion, stick by the old saying: "If the shoe fits, wear it"... in moderation.

Every Instagram Filter, Definitively Ranked

Choosing the right Instagram filter is an agonizing decision. Do I want to be mysterious and moody with Brannan, or light and ethereal with Amaro? Do I look tanner with Earlybird or Kelvin? One could spend hours tapping back and forth between selections.

Fortunately, your choices are about to be winnowed down significantly, because as all Instagrammers know, there are some filters that are far superior to others.

Here's the definitive ranking of Instagram filters, from best to absolute worst. We took the liberty of reminding you what these filters look like on a couple of stereotypical photos. Feel free to disagree with us in the comments below!

18. Kelvin

kelvin

Kelvin... Oooh, Kelvin, Kelvin, Kelvin. We don't really know how to put this...

Yep. That about sums it up.

Best For: Using it ironically, because it's Kelvin.

17. 1977

1977

1977 is almost as pointless as Kelvin when it comes to Instagram. Sure, you look exactly as I'd expect you to look, but that doesn't mean I have a use for you.

Best For: Obviously, any photo you want to look retro, think punchy graphics or graffiti.

16. Walden

walden

Walden, what's your deal? It's like you want us to look pale and jaundiced at the same time. Rude.

Best For: The yellow tint won't work on your selfies but will look lovely on subjects outside. Think puppies and children.

15. Hudson

hudson

Hudson, you have the unfortunate talent of making even my beach pictures look icy, frigid, cold. There's a reason you're kept in the back with the other misfits. #Realtalk

Best For: Keep it outside. This filter is best for keeping things modern. Think architecture and sleek, shiny cars.

14. Inkwell

inkwell

We already have a black and white filter, Inkwell. GTFO.

Best For: When you're feeling pretentious and Willow just ain't cutting it.

13. Sutro

sutro

It's not that we have a problem with Sutro, it's that we just don't ever remember using it. Like, ever.

Best For: Sutro looks very dark and kind of scary, so perhaps save this one for Halloween.

12. Sierra

sierra

Sierra is really beautiful when it comes to landscape and still life, but it really washes us out, so it's getting bumped to the lower half of the list. Sorry, Sierra.

Best For: Making still-life photos look soft and sophisticated with a lovely glow.

11. Hefe

hefe

Hefe, we already have X Pro II and Lo-Fi, why do we need another bright filter? If X Pro II is Regina George, and Lo-Fi is Cady Heron, you're Gretchen Weiners. And we all know how many candy canes Gretchen Weiners got.

Best For: Fun photos with lots of color, like flowers or poolside pics.

10. Toaster

toaster

Toaster is kind of odd until you pair it with the impossibly perfect #toasted tag. Suddenly, you're looking at it in a whole new light.

Best For: Literally anything, as long as you add the #toasted caption a la comedienne Chelsea Peretti.

9. Nashville

nashville

Nashville is the one-hit-wonder of the Instagram filter world. That Creamsicle color is going to be perfect for one very specific photo, we just haven't figure out what that photo is yet.

Best For: You let us know when you find out. We have no clue.

8. Brannan

brannan

Brannan is kind of like that guy you dated in college. It's beautiful, and you really want to like it, but man is it moody. Save only for your most emo #tbt pics.

Best For: Artsy photos of chairs or ferris wheels, or any selfie that involves you staring into the distance.

7. Willow

willow

Black and white can be a little pretentious, but if anyone can pull it off, it's Willow. Willow is as soft and pretty as a photo can be when it doesn't have any colors in it.

Best For: When you want to take a selfie but aren't really camera-ready, black and white hides all flaws, and Willow in particular is very forgiving.

6. Lo-Fi

lofi

Lo-Fi, you beautiful monster, where's the middle ground? You either make our photos stunningly beautiful or the worst ever. Can't you be more consistent?

Best For: Lo-Fi shines in the food porn category. Proceed with caution when it comes to Lo-Fi selfies.

5. X Pro II

x pro ii

The most consistent of the "bright" filters, X Pro II punches up our colors without making them too garish. Instead they look sleek and oh-so-profesh.

Best For: Photos with pops of bright colors. (Think selfies with red hair or lips, green grass against a gray sky.)

4. Rise

rise

Rise, as in the rise of the morning sun, gives our photos a soft, warm glow. And we're totally cool with that.

Best For: Making skin look soft and smooth, or for adding that refreshing "morning" look to your coffee art or #dailycommute pic.

3. Amaro

amaro

Amaro hits the top three because (1.) it's easily accessible and (2.) it gives our photos a light, airy glow.

Best For: Blue-eyed selfies (just trust us), or any dark photo that needs to be lightened up.

2. Mayfair

mayfair

When we really can't choose, Mayfair is always there for us, ready to be just flattering enough without making it look like we're trying too hard. That's what filter friends are for.

Best For: Anything. When in doubt, Mayfair.

1. Earlybird

earlybird

Not only is it one of the most flattering filters in the palette (oh, what's up instant bronzer?), it's also one of the most popular, according to this infographic.

Best For: When your summer glow isn't quite there yet, and your selfies need a boost.

Lake Bell Poses Topless For Esquire's Next Big Thing Issue

Lake Bell is topless on the May 2014 issue of Esquire, which wonders if she's the "most important actor/director/writer of her generation."

Of course, we're not surprised to see the triple threat nab the cover of the magazine's Next Big Thing issue, as her directorial debut, "In A World," (which she also wrote, produced and starred in) is one of 2013's best movies you've likely yet to see.

It's not the first time that Bell has stripped down for the cover of a magazine. Last August, the 35-year-old posed completely nude for New York Magazine, save for a few strategically placed faux tattoos designed by her husband, Scott Campbell.

When fashion designers try their hand at a Disney-style outfit, they often just modernize the standard princess dresses, mixing nostalgia with contemporary tastes. But what these iconic characters call for is a more radical, imaginative look. And thanks to one artist, that's exactly what they got.

disney villain haute couture

Sashiiko Anti on DeviantArt took some of the best-remembered Disney princesses and villains, from Cinderella and her evil stepmother to Rapunzel and Mother Gothel, and created runway-ready outfits inspired by each.

Anti first conceived of her haute couture pieces by striving for a different aesthetic: "I just wanted to try something new and design totally new looks for characters loved by so many people. It's a real challenge and a lot of fun in the same time. Plus I really enjoyed watching all the movies for the second time, or third ... or fourth."
