Neotensil: A Pricey Quick Fix for Under-Eye Bags

$

0
For $500 you can rid yourself of under-eye bags -- for a day. The latest beauty industry candidate for Dept of Daft comes from Jennifer Aniston and her co-owned company, Living Proof.

Neotensil is Living Proof's new eye treatment, and it boasts a technology that's described as an "invisible shapewear film." It activates within three hours and reduces bags under the eyes for up to 16 hours.

So, how can Living Proof justify $500 for a seven-week supply of a treatment that lasts a day? To find the answer, I looked more closely at Neotensil's secret sauce, Strateris. It turns out to be a high tech version of the old egg white trick -- an invisible film that temporarily tightens the skin.

According to Living Proof, Strateris is a "cross-linking polymeric film," and it "works by adhering to the skin and then begins to shrink, smooth and become flat, reshaping and recontouring the appearance of lax skin and bulges."

Basically, the active ingredient is a polymer, a string of very many molecules that form a long chain. The cosmetic industry has been busy with polymers since the invention of a "bimodal polymer" that can form a film that is flexible, humidity resistant and with good adhesion to the skin. The instant tightening effect meets consumer demands for immediate gratification.

Living Proof has always been partial to polymers. Its original anti-frizz hair care line is based on polyfluoroester (octafluoropentyl methacrylate), a polymer with a polyester backbone. Instant results with no long-term benefits are not unusual in beauty products. You can look out for ingredients such as polyacrylates or acrylates/dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate copolymer.

I'm not a quick-fix person when it comes to beauty. I know that eye bags and wrinkles that took years to develop cannot be treated in a few hours. In any case, I don't want to wear something that makes me feel as if I've got Spandex under my eyes. Despite the celebrity halo of Jennifer Aniston and the aura of quasi science from the former MIT Living Proof founder, I wouldn't spend $50 -- let alone $500 -- on Neotensil.

Fashion Whip: Celebrating Washington's Own Red Carpet, AKA The White House Correspondents' Dinner

$

Fashion Whip is a political style column in the Huffington Post by Lauren A. Rothman, inspired by Lauren's experience as the founder of Styleauteur, a style and fashion consulting firm.

Locals will have Hollywood royalty in their backyard this weekend. Saturday is Washington's big day to dress up, and every year the White House Correspondents' Dinner festivities get even the most slovenly dressers into a tie or tux. This is the media's weekend to celebrate and many will push through the daily news cycle as they attend celebrity-studded parties around town.

amy poehler whcd 13

Many of TV and film's biggest stars will be in attendance but even the flashiest of celebs tone it down on DC's red carpet. Actors and the people they emulate on TV and in movies will mingle at brunches and cocktail parties. You may see Julianna Margulies from "The Good Wife" alongside someone who really is a good wife, and America's favorite television president, Tony Goldwyn from "Scandal", may pose for pics with President Obama. While this event always has a best-dressed list, politicos and press superstars take their own turns to shine at the Washington Hilton.

Some famous on air-personalities enjoy fashion and style but, on the whole, this is an industry that doesn't do spray tans, teeth whitening, or borrowed jewels. You're more likely to see people getting their makeup done at a Nordstrom counter and a blowout in Georgetown, than ushering a glam squad into their home.

Just what, you might ask, is the key difference between a Hollywood red carpet and the White House Correspondents' Dinner? This presidential send-up is traditionally attended by the District's old-school press royalty. Washington's most valuable currency is power and here that nest egg grows with experience. Many wear the same shoes for 12 hours and get frustrated when dresses and skirts don't have pockets -- it's not unusual for me to be tasked at the last minute with finding clutches (with optional straps, of course) to accommodate reading glasses, multiple cell phones, and lipstick. The DC vanguard expects comfort and convenience from their ensemble even in the dressiest of circumstances.

Most celebrities visiting the nation's capital this weekend will be dressed in borrowed designer duds, accessories, and the latest trend in shoes as they are photographed coming and going. They will dress to impress and continue their personal branding through this unique extension of the recent awards season, looking to land an endorsement deal to become the next face of a fragrance, makeup empire, or retailer.

Meanwhile, the press core is a group that buys their own formal attire, sometimes on sale and usually off the rack. I have certainly helped DC power players source unique, custom, and couture gowns but, for this event, expect slits instead of cutouts, understated lace in place of bold patterns, higher necklines and peplum waists. Red carpet red is always popular and a sea of black makes it easy to blend in at the affectionately referred to "Nerd Prom."

The best way to add District sparkle and blur the line between celeb and politico? Rent the Runway -- a well-kept secret (totally worth bragging about) that will help any party-goer feel like Cinderella -- or First Lady Michelle Obama -- and fit right in!

On Thursday night, New York City was treated to a futuristic fashion show.

The Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) event called "The Future of Fashion: 2014 Graduates Collection" was presented by alumni Calvin Klein and hosted by British "It" girl Alexa Chung. The runway show featured 85 different looks all by FIT's graduating design students with, input from notable industry critics, like Rebecca Minkoff, Lisa Di Napoli , Mathieu Mirano and more.

The fashion show started about 45 minutes after its set start time, bringing a whole new world of relevance to the phrase "fashionably late." Alexa Chung made sure to remind FIT students after her introduction, "Remember when I come begging for dresses I did you this favor."

After the show we got to catch up with Chung, where we asked her to describe the show in three words: "Accomplished, eclectic, and wearable," she told us. She also named her favorites pieces for us ("I want the silver pleated skirt and then the beige jump suit with the split. It was like a top and then a trouser... Good luck finding that!") which you can check out in the pictures and slideshow below.

As a special treat for anyone who couldn't be there, the entire FIT Fashion Show can be found online here.

You want an SPF 30. But which one? ID your major issue to find a smart pick.

If you break out...
An oil-free, noncomedogenic (won't clog pores) lotion that promises a nongreasy or matte finish is your best bet. "It will have oil-absorbing ingredients and dimethicone, which stops the sunscreen from feeling sticky," says Howard Murad, M.D., a Los Angeles dermatologist. And this is just a bonus: Your go-to formula also works like a primer, leaving skin smooth and dry so you can apply makeup right away. Our favorite: Benefit Dream Screen, $32.

If you're dry...
Avoid sprays and gels. They often contain alcohol and exacerbate dryness, says Jessica Wu, M.D., a derm in L.A. Zinc oxide (a common UV filter) is also likely to sap moisture because of its astringent properties. So you're shopping for an SPF with chemical UV filters (you'll see avobenzone or octocrylene on the label) and hydrators such as hyaluronic acid, glycolipids or shea butter. We found Hawaiian Tropic Silk Hydration Face SPF 30, $9.

If you're sensitive...
You need a fragrance-free, hypoallergenic SPF with physical filters, like zinc oxide and titanium dioxide, rather than chemical ones such as avobenzone or homosalate. "You're less likely to react to physical filters, because they don't absorb into skin," Dr. Wu says. You'll love MD Solar Sciences Mineral Tinted Crème SPF 30, $32.

And one for all...
Body sunscreens are more universal, since skin below the neck is thicker and less problem-prone. Use a water-resistant option like Hang Ten Classic Sport SPF 50, $13.

Emma Stone On Body Image: 'We're Always Too Skinny Or Too Fat'

Emma Stone keeps it real when it comes to body shaming.

"I firmly believe that nothing really affects you or can really bother you if you don't already feel that way about yourself," Stone told USA Today in a recent interview. "I've seen a lot of comments that say, 'Eat a sandwich' or 'She looks sick.' I've been looking at myself in the mirror being mean to myself. I'm not sick. I eat sandwiches. There is in no way is it my intention to be a bad example. That has been kind of bothering me lately. I've shamed myself for it. We shame each other online. We're always too skinny or too fat or too tall or too short. They're just confirming this feeling I have about myself. I'm trying to figure my body out. It bothers me because I care so much about young girls. We're shaming each other and we're shaming ourselves, and it sucks."

As a person in the public eye, the 25-year-old has dealt with her fair share of criticism and weight rumors. But instead of letting such nonsense consume her, she chooses to avoid it.

"When I make a comment about someone or I choose to gossip about someone and speculate about their body or their life or their face, it's usually a reflection of something I'm feeling myself. That has become ingrained in me. I'm trying to eliminate gossip from my own life," she added.

Stone is not the only celebrity to speak up about body shaming. On Thursday, Gabourey Sidibe gave a moving speech about self-image while at the Gloria Awards and Gala hosted by the Ms. Foundation for Women. She called out Internet trolls who tear her down, as well as those who ask her about her own body confidence.

"If they hadn't told me I was ugly, I never would have searched for my beauty," she said. "And if they hadn't tried to break me down, I wouldn't know that I'm unbreakable. [Dabs tears] So when you ask me how I'm so confident, I know what you're really asking me: how could someone like me be confident? Go ask Rihanna, asshole!"

You go, girls.

5 New Uses For Julep Cups (PHOTOS)

After a painfully cold winter and bumpy start to spring, it's finally time to break out the oversized hats, place your bets and pour some mint juleps for none other than the Kentucky Derby. But no matter how prepared you think you might be for the "140th renewal of The Greatest Two Minutes in Sports," you're never really ready until you break out the julep cups. With a history that stretches back hundreds of years and a versatility that crosses multiple rooms in the house, these glasses have proven to be as American as they are practical.

Here are some innovative ways to use your julep cups long after the last horse crosses the finish line:

1. Desk Organizer
As nice as generic office supply catch-alls and pencil holders are, julep cups are a fabulous way to store your writing utensils while adding a metallic touch to your desk.

2. Flower Vase
The only thing better than beautiful blooms is beautiful blooms in a beautiful container. Skip the standard glass container and go with julep glasses for a touch of added character and sheen.

3. Bathroom Organizer
From makeup brushes to toothbrushes, your bathroom will be a little bit more organized and a lot more chic by opting for derby drinkware over that painfully coordinated bathroom set.

4. Candle Votive
Instead of spending money on separate containers for your candles, just pop a couple tealights in a couple of cups for a soft, silvery glow.

5. And Of Course, For Mint Juleps!
It's logical, traditional and just plain classy. And what better way to learn to whip one up than from master mixologist, renowned bartender and James Beard Award winner for wine and spirits, Dale "King Cocktail" DeGroff. Check out the video below and then head over to Bulleit for more recipe ideas.

Here's Why Spring Is The Best Season To Fall In Love

It's spring and love is in the air. With all the weddings, romantic picnics and opportunities for hand-in-hand strolling, spring is really the unofficial season of love. These carefree days make it the best time for lovey-dovey overload, and here's why ...

Spring is the best time to take off on a random romantic adventure. Come on, let's go!

It's the season that reminds us that love is most exciting when it's fresh and new...

...But that it's best when it's everlasting.

Spring is made for slowing down, walking hand-in-hand watching the sun set.

And of course, just chillin' and doing nothing.

Even though it's warm, spring is made for holing up just the two of you.

And there's no better time for an impromptu road trip.

It's the season that reminds us that love -- and life -- should be a roller coaster.

Springtime love means getting extra close to the besties you love most.

In Spring, love abounds in the strangest of places.

And when we find it, we never want to let it go ...

There's no better time to lounge with bare feet.

And walk hand-in-hand with no particular place to go.

Spring is made for adventures of reckless abandon.

Yep, it's Spring and love is truly in the air!

White House Correspondents' Dinner Brings Together Obama, Journalists, Celebrities And More

By The Associated Press

WASHINGTON (AP) -- President Barack Obama was set to join journalists, government officials, politicians and media personalities Saturday night at the White House Correspondents' Association dinner for an evening of humor and celebrity gazing that has become an annual tradition in the nation's capital.

Ahead of the dinner, Obama was spending the afternoon golfing at Fort Belvoir, Virginia, with three White House aides. First Lady Michelle Obama was to accompany him to the black tie event.

Joel McHale, star of the NBC series "Community," was signed to be the dinner's featured entertainer.

The dinner has often come at key moments of Obama's presidency. In 2011, Obama showed up the day before special operations troops killed Osama bin Laden. Last year's dinner came nearly two weeks after the deadly Boston Marathon.

This time, the U.S. and Europe are anxiously watching Ukraine and Russia's role in the turbulence in the eastern region of the former Soviet state.

The correspondent's association, which represents the White House press corps, is celebrating its 100th anniversary.

Several journalists were to be awarded prizes for their coverage of the presidency and national issues.

Glenn Thrush of Politico and Brianna Keilar of CNN won the Aldo Beckman Award, which recognizes excellence in the coverage of the presidency.

Peter Baker of The New York Times and Peter Maer of CBS News won the Merriman Smith Award for deadline coverage.

Megan Twohey of Reuters and a partnership between The Center for Public Integrity's Chris Hamby and ABC News' Matthew Mosk and Brian Ross won the Edgar A. Poe Award for coverage of issues of national significance.

Just bring that garland of roses to Johnny Weir because he is already a winner at the Kentucky Derby.

The former U.S. Olympic figure skater who became an unexpected star of the Sochi Olympics for his statements as an announcer as well as his fashion statements in the NBC broadcast booth is back on the job for the Run for the Roses. Along with Tara Lipinksi, Weir is working for NBC as a fashion correspondent during the 140th Kentucky Derby.

To the surprise of absolutely no one, he arrived at Churchill Downs on Saturday rocking an absolutely unforgettable Derby hat.

At Churchill Downs on Friday for the Kentucky Oaks, Weir was sporting another amazing hat.

"I think our role is to bring some fun and light to the Kentucky Derby broadcast," Weir told Richard Deitsch of Sports Illustrated before Derby Day at Churchill Downs. "That's what I think we were able to accomplish at the Olympics and I think NBC saw that and knew we could bring some fun and charm to the Kentucky Derby -- or at least some more."

Mission accomplished.

Nerd prom is here, but let's just say that the fashion is anything but nerdy. A-listers and politicos flocked to D.C. for the annual 2014 White House Correspondents' Dinner wearing some gorgeous dresses and snappy tuxedos. And though there were many best-dressed potentials in the crowd, Michelle Obama just might take the cake.

FLOTUS stunned in a gold Marchesa off-the-shoulder gown with a embroidered bodice and a flowy skirt. To complete the look, MObama went with a pair of statement earrings, kitten heels and what can only be described as the best blow-out ever. It looks like Crazy Eyes left the crazy on the cell block...

Politicians, journalists and Hollywood stars took over Washington, D.C. on Saturday night for the 100th Annual White House Correspondents' Association Dinner. While First Lady Michelle Obama wowed in an ivory Marchesa off-the-shoulder gown, "Orange Is The New Black" actress Uzo Aduba was definitely the talk of the town with her elegant red carpet ensemble.

Aduba let her hair down (literally!) for the evening with a shoulder-length bob and heavy, side-swept bangs. While this hairstyle is a complete 180 from the beautiful Bantu knots she sports on the Netflix original series, we're loving this new 'do. And her metallic gold eye makeup, fuchsia lipstick and black manicure add the finishing touch to that strapless black sequin dress.

Audrey Hepburn Was Even More Beautiful As She Grew Older

Whenever Audrey Hepburn is referenced, it seems as though the late star's memory is frozen into still shots from her younger days. Even though we admire the sass and style she displayed in films like "Funny Face," "Roman Holiday" and "Breakfast at Tiffany's," we also appreciate Hepburn's beauty as she grew older.

Wearing that same girlish grin that brought men to their knees and perfectly coiffed hairstyles that women still try to recreate, Hepburn taught us how to exude elegance. And the Academy Award winning-actress also showed us that we shouldn't be concerned about those worry lines on our forehead, because life's too beautiful to be concerned about wrinkles.

So in celebration of what would have been Audrey Hepburn's 85th birthday, we've selected photographs that prove she aged gracefully.
