Michelle Obama Debuts Quintessential 'First Lady' Hair (PHOTOS)

Michelle Obama may be a hip, of-the-moment FLOTUS. But the woman can still pull off the most quintessential hairstyle for a woman in her position: the voluminous, ultra-coifed first lady 'do.

FLOTUS attended a Toys for Tots event yesterday, sporting a blown-out, bouncy hairstyle that just screamed "first lady" -- a far cry from the sleek, modern bangs she debuted back in January, no? So while Michelle may have kicked off the year with trendy flat-ironed hair, it seems she's ending 2013 with a style that pays homage to the many hairspray-loving first ladies that came before her.

Think Mrs. O will keep this look for a while? Or is another "midlife crisis" looming?

If you think that giving a makeup fiend more makeup as a gift is a bad idea, then you're sadly mistaken. What you should avoid are those 50-shade eyeshadow, lip gloss and blush trunks that include only a few colors she actually likes.

Instead, look for the latest beauty products that come packaged in simpler sets, like a gorgeous nail polish and lipstick combos or a four-piece smokey eye palette. (She'd get more use out of her brand new item and it won't get lost in her stash.)

Here are nine gift ideas that will get you cool points with your makeup-hoarding friend.

Wedding Dress Made From Recycled Target Bags Is A Sight To Behold

One woman's trash is another woman's wedding dress...literally.

Reddit user boosted4banger posted these incredible photos Thursday with the caption, "Awesome wedding dress made from recycled target bags my sister put together for a school project."

How exactly do you make a dress out of plastic bags?

In the comments, the poster says it was a bit of a process. Her sister first removed the red Target logos, layered the bags and used an iron to bond them -- creating a much thicker material. She then lined the inside of the dress with recycled T-shirts to soften it.

One thing is for sure: this girl definitely deserves an "A".

Check out the slideshow below to see some wedding dresses made out of toilet paper.

Target Offers 10 Percent Discount As An Apology For That Massive Security Breach

$

Target CEO Gregg Steinhafel issued an apology on the company’s website Friday to the approximately 40 million customers affected by one of the largest credit-card breaches ever to hit a U.S. retailer.

To make up for the problem, which Steinhafel said has been "eliminated," Target is offering customers 10 percent off this weekend, the same discount Target workers get.

“The message I would like to leave with guests is that we value their business, and we appreciate the trust they place in us as a company and as a friend and a community partner,” Steinhafel said in a video posted to YouTube. “So at Target we get a 10 percent discount if you’re a team member, and we want to extend that team member discount to all of the guests that come and shop with us this weekend as a small way to just say thank you for being a great guest at Target.”

The discount is available Dec. 21-22, but some restrictions do apply:

“Valid in store only. Limit one offer per guest to be used in a single transaction. Void if prohibited by law. Not valid in Canada. No cash value.”

Hackers obtained the credit and debit card numbers of millions of Target customers over the course of 19 days, beginning the day before Thanksgiving, according to Reuters. If you are wondering whether your information has been compromised, the retailer says to call 866-852-8680. Here is the text of Steinhafel’s full apology:

“Yesterday we shared that there was unauthorized access to payment card data at our U.S. stores. The issue has been identified and eliminated. We recognize this has been confusing and disruptive during an already busy holiday season. Our guests’ trust is our top priority at Target and we are committed to making this right.

We want our guests to understand that just because they shopped at Target during the impacted time frame, it doesn’t mean they are victims of fraud. In fact, in other similar situations, there are typically low levels of actual fraud. Most importantly, we want to reassure guests that they will not be held financially responsible for any credit and debit card fraud. And to provide guests with extra assurance, we will be offering free credit monitoring services. We will be in touch with those impacted by this issue soon on how and where to access the service.

We understand it’s been difficult for some guests to reach us via our website and call center. We apologize and want you to understand that we are experiencing unprecedented call volume. Our Target teams are working continuously to build capacity and meet our guests’ needs.

We take this crime seriously. It was a crime against Target, our team members, and most importantly, our guests. We’re in this together, and in that spirit, we are extending a 10% discount – the same amount our team members receive – to guests who shop in U.S. stores on Dec. 21 and 22. Again, we recognize this issue has been confusing and disruptive during an already busy holiday season. We want to emphasize that the issue has been addressed and let guests know they can shop with confidence at their local Target stores.”

Kate Upton, Maksim Chmerkovskiy Split After 6 Months, Men Everywhere Smile Wide

After a six-month relationship, blond bombshell Kate Upton and dancer Maksim Chmerkovskiy are no longer together, Us Weekly was first to report.

"They are really good friends still and speak all the time, but their schedules just made it too difficult and it fell apart," a source told Us. "[Chmerkovskiy] has a lot of respect for her, but it just wasn't working anymore."

The two went public with their romance in September, three months after they started seeing each other, notes the New York Daily News. The photogenic duo was spotted in New York City's West Village holding hands and smiling, confirming months of speculation.

In October, Chmerkovskiy told Us Weekly that the 21-year-old Sports Illustrated model is "an amazing person" and added that they have an "incredible time together."

The newly-single (but surely not for long) Upton made headlines earlier this week when the trailer for her movie, "The Other Woman," came out, in which she appears alongside Cameron Diaz and Leslie Mann. The movie is set to hit theaters in 2014.

HuffPost reached to both Upton and Chmerkovskiy's reps for comment and will update the story once one comes through.

2013: The Year 'Ugly' Trends Made A Comeback

$

It's been a pretty banner year for the fashion world as far as remaining open-minded. Trends that have previously been deemed ugly, unappealing or just unflattering have seemed to make a comeback on the collections presented in the past 12 months.

Below, see the 10 "ugly" trends that became cool in 2013.

Birkenstocks The clunky footwear, oft associated with hippies and the like, made a major comeback in collections for Edun, Trina Turk, Houghton and Shades of Grey.

birkenstocks

Laundry bag print It's official: Celine can basically turn garbage into gold.

Culottes The always-awkward split skirt wormed its way back into our hearts via Alexander Wang, Emporio Armani and Proenza Schouler's runways.

culottes

Flashy logos Think it's totally uncool to wear a logo-emblazoned sweater obnoxiously announcing to the world the designer label you're wearing? Alexander Wang, DKNY and Pucci suggest you think again.

All-over leather Leather daddies made it mainstream, thanks to Prada, 3.1 Phillip Lim, Mulberry and Gucci.

Adidas shower shoes We can't say we saw this one coming, but Misha Nonoo used them to present her collection this year.

adidas

Overalls If DKNY, Rag & Bone and Mark McNairy New Amsterdam all support them, they're not just for farmers anymore.

overalls

Boxy flannels In case you didn't notice, the '90s are back... and that includes those boxy flannels, courtesy of Saint Laurent and Rodarte.

Flatforms We can't say we "get it," but the hoof-like shoes graced the collections of Tibi, Y-3 and Alice + Olivia this year.

Colored fur Not since Dion in "Clueless" have we seen such cool colored fur (real or faux). Thanks, Anna Sui, BCBG and Michael Kors.

The 10 Most Annoying People You'll Meet While Shopping This Weekend

$
0
0
This is it, guys. The last weekend before Christmas. Malls are open until midnight and there's an abnormal surplus of "safe" last-minute gifts (read: robes, commemorative ornaments and off-brand bath sets) in the front of every store.

And everyone you encounter is pretty much a jerk.

Except you, of course. Even though you are among the panicked hoards trying to find an acceptable gift for the in-law that you accidentally omitted from your shopping list. It's fine; you had your reasons. While you wait in line with the questionable pair of slippers, here's a handy guide to the most annoying people around you.

1. Suburban Moms With SUVs And Blood Lust

Don't even try to switch lanes, even if their Range Rover is but a speck in your rearview mirror. She WILL catch up and she WILL tailgate you. She's been stuck with her kids for too long, all of whom suddenly told her that they would be laughed out of their elementary school social circles unless she can acquire a zebra-print rubber band loom. That's right. Kids can be convinced to buy rubber band looms.

2. The Chipper Shopper Who Wants To Make Conversation In Line

She's usually wearing a themed vest and a Santa hat. You have a sneaking suspicion that she's not even there for last-minute shopping, but to treat an endless line like the world's worst cocktail party. (Which, for the record, would be a party where you stand in a crowd at Macy's, completely sober, listening to Jessica Simpson's version of "Little Drummer Boy.")

3. The Person Who Attempts To Cut The Line

There are moments when one's ugly side is suddenly revealed for all to see. A young woman in Ugg boots shuffles up to the line while at least 10 people are glaring at her, as if you're just there for that aforementioned world's worst cocktail party. She doesn't notice because she's texting. This is the moment that separates the genuinely good from the rest of us who identified a little too much with Bruce Banner in The Avengers movie, when he said: "That's my secret, Cap. I'm always angry."

4. The People Who Just Don't Get Lines In The First Place

There will be one line feeding four registers. And they'll just confidently stride right up, again like it's no big deal. They usually lack the entitlement of the line-jumper in that they genuinely have no idea about the concept of one line feeding many registers in an efficient fashion. You know this because, when clarified about their error, they jump back and apologize.

5. The Person Who Wants Everything In Separate Bags

Or something else that's ridiculously specific and not something a sane person would request at 10 p.m. the day before Christmas Eve at a grocery store.

6. Gaggles Of Teenagers

That's right, "gaggles." Get off my lawn. Or at least, out of the way. Who hangs out at a mall on one of the busiest shopping days of the year, without any intention of buying anything?

7. The Driver Of The Lurking Car Who Is Trying To Find Out Where You Parked

Think optimism is dead? Just look at the number of people who honestly believe they can find a parking spot near the entrance of a store this weekend. Suck it up, park in the back, get some exercise.

8. The Person Screaming At Some Overworked Cashier

Look, no one is happy to be in this situation. But did you really think that coupon code you found on RetailMeNot that promised 90% off full-priced toys at the Disney Store would really work? Don't take it out on cashiers, or anyone who is patiently putting up with the nonsense that is holiday shopping.

9. The Person Who Scoffs At You For Waiting So Long To Shop

You already know you made a crappy decision. You will feel guilty when you hand over that Winnie The Pooh mug and blanket set to your teenaged niece is definitely too old for -- if she even liked anything in the first place. You can already feel yourself being mocked on Facebook. You know that you'll give your single aunt a complex that will take multiple therapy sessions to get through when you give her that Chia cat grass planter.

You don't need someone reinforcing this, unless they have access to a time machine. Or will let you have access to that "gift closet" they invariably have.

10. You. And Me. And Us.
crowded mall
We're part of the problem. We may not yell, cut in line or do anything else unseemly. Yet, every year, here we are, panic-shopping. We might try to do the online shopping thing, but something will inevitably screw it up. The UPS guy will whisper-knock on your door, then claim you weren't home and reroute your package back to the Amazon.com mothership. Or, surprise! Barnes And Noble lied and they don't really have any of the things you ordered.

But really, those were isolated incidents. The rest of the time, it's definitely our fault. We wait for a better sale. Or, we take our packed schedules one day at a time and then, boom, it's Christmas. We wish people would actually follow the rhetoric they spout about how the holiday is too commercial, let's bring it back to what it used to be. But that never happens.

Maybe next year will be different.

LeAnn Rimes is a true beauty and a new Twitter photo proves she doesn't need a ton of makeup to shine.

The singer posted the following pic to her account Friday (Dec. 20), in which she looks virtually makeup free and beautiful while rehearsing for an Aspen, Colorado, performance. All hail, Queen Bey!

Shoppers at a Tewksbury, Massachusetts Walmart were shocked when pop star Beyonce paid a surprise visit to the superstore on December 20.

The star, whose new self-titled album shattered sales records after dropping unannounced on Dec. 13, jumped on the Walmart loudspeaker and casually offered to pay the first $50 of every customer's Christmas purchase via a gift card.

According to local Fox affiliate WGHP, the grammy-winning artist stopped at the store on her way to performing a concert in Boston.

"It was amazing, quite a scene," Walmart spokeswoman Sarah McKinney told the station. "Everybody was so excited when she came in, and it's so great what she did for our customers right before Christmas."

So how much holiday cheer did the superstar eventually shell out? According to Boston.com, Beyonce handed out 750 gift cards, totaling a whopping $37,500.

And just when we thought we couldn't love her any more. Swoon.

Isla, Savannah Phillips Can Teach Prince George A Thing Or Two About Cuteness

Prince George might have been Prince Charles' first grandchild, but he wasn't Queen Elizabeth II's first great-grandchild -- that role was already taken by Savannah Phillips, granddaughter of Princess Anne. Then came Isla Phillips, Savannah's sister, making George the measly third. It's OK, Georgie, you're still way ahead in line to inherit the throne.

But little Isla and Savannah could give Lil' G a run for his money in the cuteness department, specifically when it comes to cute clothes. The noble great-grandchildren bundled up for the Christmas Meeting at Ascot Racecourse on Friday with their dad, Peter Phillips, and their stylish mum, Autumn Phillips.

And for the cold outdoor event, they had the sweetest kiddie outfits. Savannah's red parka boasted a stylish sash at the waist, while Isla had a kitty hat with ears that we'd really like to steal for, uh, our baby cousin (cough ourselves).

Prince George, take note.

5 Makeup And Hair Looks To Copy In 2014 (And 5 To Definitely Skip)

$
0
0
When this year's red carpet season kicked off, many A-listers (ahem, Cate Blanchett) left us underwhelmed with their hair and makeup. Thankfully, leading ladies like Sandra Bullock, Lupita Nyong'o and Jennifer Lawrence lifted our spirits with their bold movie premiere beauty looks.

From Sandra's sexy, tousled waves to Lupita's lovely lipstick colors to J.Law's controversial pixie haircut, these three women showed us how to take risks with our hair and makeup. But, of course, there were those celebrities who managed to distract us with their red carpet fails.

Here are the beauty looks from 2013 we loved and hated. Get inspired for 2014!

BEST: Taylor Swift

taylor swift

The "I Knew You Were Trouble" singer hits all the right notes with this blunt bangs hairstyle, sultry smokey eye and soft pink lipstick. It's edgy yet not overdone.

BEST: Kerry Washington

kerry washington

Kerry looks like she stepped straight out of the '60s with this lash-tastic look. Her side-swept ponytail and nude glossy pout scream retro, while her lavender eyeshadow and peach blush are more modern.

BEST: Sandra Bullock

sandra bullock

If we had to sum up Sandra's hair and makeup in two words, we'd describe it as smoking hot. The "Gravity" actress' glossy brunette strands and bright red lipstick go perfectly with her LBD.

BEST: Lupita Nyong'o

lupita nyongo

No one can wear lipstick like Lupita. This electric purple pops against her chocolate complexion and adds a feminine touch to her buzz cut and masculine-inspired dress.

BEST: Jennifer Lawrence

jennifer lawrence

It took a while for "The Hunger Games" star's much-shorter hair to grow on us, but we are absolutely loving this pixie. Here she's giving us an '80s vibe with the piecey layers, dark brows, bright blush and hot pink lipstick.

WORST: Lana Del Rey

lana del rey

It's really hard for us to take the singer-songwriter seriously with these jeweled gator hair pins, graphic winged eyeliner, gray lipstick and lip liner. Time to tone down the theatrics, Lana.

WORST: Carmen Electra

carmen electra

Can we please leave the side-braid, half-fauxhawk hairstyle behind in 2013? It's also about time Carmen ditches the iridescent eye makeup and plays up her features with a brown smokey eye.

WORST: Adrienne Bailon

adrienne bailon

There is absolutely no reason for ANYONE to appear this orange. Plus, Adrienne's highlighted hair, gold glitter eyeshadow and peach eyeliner only magnify her bronzer/tanner mishap.

WORST: Vanessa Hudgens

vanessa hudgens

Coco Chanel's style mantra to remove one thing before leaving the house applies to hair and makeup as well. If the young actress had unpinned that faux braid, she wouldn't have looked nearly as sloppy.

WORST: Anna Paquin

anna paquin

It wouldn't seem like a stretch to assume that the "True Blood" star is drawing inspiration from her vampire TV series. But her grayish hair, pale complexion and red-stained lips translate into a terrifying look on the red carpet.

2013's best and worst beauty looks:

Study Finds British Peoples' Biggest Holiday Pet Peeves Couldn't Be More British

$

0
You've got crowded stores and unexpected guests and social-media-obsessed college kids, and yet none of those top the list of things some 2,000 Brits said that bug them the most about the holidays in a recent survey conducted by the Worcester, Bosch Group.

Instead, the survey found that visiting friends and family at a cold house topped their list of pet peeves, though only 20 percent of respondents said they would actually complain about it to a host. "The rest would grin and bear it (30.8%), make a joke out of it (16%), keep their coat on (15.7%)," the survey reveals.

Here's what other holiday hassles annoy British people the most:

  1. A cold house

  2. Missing favorite TV

  3. Screaming children

  4. Having to take our shoes off

  5. Awkward conversations

In a similar survey among Americans, appliance brand Kenmore found that not being able to find a unique gift for their host is one of the things that stress holiday guests out the most. According to the Kenmore survey, 85 percent of Americans have struggled to find something suitable and often arrive with no gift at all.

Check out more of what both surveys found (including the things Brits argue with friends and family over the most) and tell us: What's your biggest holiday pet peeve?

Mariah Carey and her family are currently on vacation in Aspen, where it is apparently tradition to walk your dog in the snow, while wearing a teeny bikini.

"It's just tradition," she wrote, "#aspen," presumably referencing the fact that she enjoys putting herself at an extremely high risk of getting hypothermia.

The singer later posted a photo, wearing the same bikini paired with a silky robe and furry red heels. "Warming up for the hottub moments," she captioned the picture.

7 Last-Minute Christmas Gifts That Don't Look Last-Minute (PHOTOS)

$
0
0
If you're reading this then you know you're way behind the 8-ball with holiday shopping. While Santa was making his list and checking it twice, you were watching Scandal and drinking gingerbread lattes. Shame on you. Now, it's less than a week until Christmas and you need to buy for everyone on your list in a very short amount of time. Can it be done? Sure. Can it be done without actually looking like you waited until the last minute? That is trickier but possible.

The key to last-minute gifting is to make it look like you thought long and hard for the perfect present. Here are seven last-minute gifts that don't look like afterthoughts. You should be able to get all of them at your local mall and in one shopping trip! Don't forget to splurge on some nice wrapping paper and gift bags (and by splurge, I mean SPLURGE). Over the top, festive wrapping gives the illusion that you really, really care -- which will hide the fact that you're really, really busy.

Patterned Infinity Scarf from Macy's
last minute gift
Tis the season for scarves! Lucky for you, a scarf is not the throw away gift it has been in the past. Nowadays, trendy infinity scarves are a favorite accessory for women, rather than simply winter wear. Make sure you get a fun pattern and great color -- a neutral colored wool scarf is still lame and a no-no.

Elephant Teapot from Target
last minute gift
Obviously you shouldn't get your dad an elephant teapot, but you also shouldn't be shopping for your dad on Christmas Eve. This teapot is a unique spin on something classic. It's cute, functional and can also be used for décor. Plus, the price is just right for last minute purchasing.

Pajama Sets from Macy's
last minute gifts
This is the one time out of the year that pajamas are a totally acceptable and fun gift. Holiday PJ's make you think of when you were a kid and still believed in Santa. If you have to get several gifts for sisters, best friends etc., go with matching jammies. You can wear them that night and then break them out again next year. They're also the only item of clothing you can get away with getting too big (you wanted them to be extra comfy, right?).

Automatic Wine Opener from Target
wine opener
Hello, lover. This is the holy grail of (inexpensive, last-minute) holiday gifts. If you're buying for a regular wine drinker or even an occasional imbiber, it's still awesome. There are several types of automatic wine openers and they work for any price range. Perfect for a hostess, a stocking stuffer or a gift for yourself after a shopping trip well done.

Luxe Throw from JCPenney
luxe throw
What's better than a cozy blanket on a cold winters night? Probably, a cozy blanket and a bottle of wine but, no need to go overboard here. The key to making this last minute buy amazing is to spend a little more moola for something incredibly soft. If you have an idea of the style that would match your gift recipients home, by all means go for it. If you don't, get a neutral color or simple print. If it doesn't match, don't worry. When they're not bundled up in its scrumptious warmth, they will be able to pop it in a closet.

Headphones from Best Buy
last minute gift
It's safe to assume that pretty much everyone uses headphones nearly everyday -- and they're usually cheap ones. Really nice headphones are one of those things people rarely buy for themselves. Last-minute gifts for men are tough to come by but shmancy earbuds are a sure thing. Plus, headphones are always getting lost or broken so there is a constant need for new ones!

Crystal Candlesticks from JCPenney
last minute gifts
As last-minute gifts go, candles might as well come with a sign that says "I bought this today." Candlesticks on the other hand, now we're talking! Crystal candlesticks are a great gift because they go with virtually any décor and if they don't match perfectly, they can still be used for special occasions or holidays. The great part is that most big name stores offer fancy looking candlesticks at reasonable prices.

And here is how to make that gift look special:

Resist Temptation and Give Your Client the Holiday Gift of Undivided Attention

$
0
0
Oh, the temptation. My recommendation, "resist!"

'Tis the season when the salon phone rings like a sleigh full of devoted clients, along with so many new customers, desperate for appointments, all within a two or three-week window around the holidays. And it is so, so easy to say "yes" to all that money and the chance to woo a new client, to run with the hectic fun of the season and calm those pleading tones at the other end of the line.

I cannot encourage you enough: be very careful not to overbook.

This is such a common, and costly, error among salon professionals in demand, particularly at this time of year. We think we've got it under control, we see an "opening" on the schedule -- a regular client is getting her usual cut and color. "I can squeeze in a quick cut while her color is processing!" And then they both want something different.

Your angst becomes obvious, your longtime client feels jilted, and that new client who was dressing for a special date or night on the town is disappointed, too. Suddenly, you're a half hour behind (or worse) all day. No client is going to remember that you tried to do a new client a favor. You might even need to comp or discount a service to heal the wounds. Much worse, though, you could lose your long term clients and damage your reputation.

Consider another scenario. Allow appropriate time. Be ready to welcome a change of heart by a client. This is dress-up time. Expectations are sky high, precariously so, dangerously high! Don't be the one to falter and, more importantly, be ready to fulfill an opportunity, to do something extra, to give that client a great experience, not just a cut, because we all know there is more to the salon business than good hair and salon services.

The season is so full of emotion, not all of it good, that it becomes particularly stressful. Be ready to look down at tears, and then listen. That takes time that is so valuable right now, but don't be so rushed that you can't show compassion.

I have not told you to say, "no," when you get one-too-many calls. Instead, be ready with referrals. You can still give them a solution. Help them find the way to another great stylist and, while you're at it, suggest a services with one of your colleagues in a neighboring salon. This is a great way of demonstrating your self-confidence as a professional. That's a favor and compliment to a colleague, too, that may very well come back to you. This works in so many ways.
