Eminem's Take On Christmas Is Exactly What You'd Expect From Eminem

Eminem would like to wish you a "Happy F--kin Holidays."

While many of us are getting into the holiday spirt by trimming the tree or listening to Christmas tunes, the rapper finds he's most festive when simulating sex with a large plastic reindeer, which is pretty much what you'd expect from Eminem.

The 41-year-old certainly has not lost his love of juvenile antics, as he shared a photo of himself in a Santa suit getting frisky with Rudolph's cousin on Monday (Dec. 23):

We'll give him points for at least making his Christmas photo Christmas-themed, unlike some other celebrities we know.

Christmas, Gangnam Style!

Christmas, Gangnam Style!

Well, not really. This post will not be exploring back down below the Han River, but will be looking at the particularly Korean nature of Christmas. But if it has to do with rapid adoption of Western culture or mass consumer culture, you know  Gangnam has to come into this somewhere.

For many Americans, the Christmas and holiday season has always been a special time to be spent with family and is a sacred oasis from the world of work, no matter what one's religion. One has to remember that Christmas in Korea, and in Japan, for that matter, is a markedly different celebration. In recent years, Americans have been heard to the bemoan the over-commercialization of Santa's special day, and have been seen to fight over its perceived over-secularization, or even the supposedly "attack on Christmas." In the end, this is all a fight about a moral thing: a Rankin-Bass cartoon lesson about remembering "the true meaning of Christmas."

The winter wonderland of a Myeongdong Christmas is full of bright lights and consumptive fantasies.
C
hristmas in the Myeongdong fashion/shopping district is tradition.

However, South Korea has not been the country that was very invested in the decoration and accoutrements of that holiday, and even into the 1990s, not very much actually happened on 25 December besides being what Koreans call a "red day" on the calendar and a public holiday from work. For Koreans, it wasn't even the biggest holiday of the year, which is reserved for the Korean version of Thanksgiving, when people venerate their ancestors in the small rituals in the household. In fact, this holiday called Chuseok often ends up lopping three or four days off of the work week, depending on when it falls every year. So Christmas hasn't always been a holiday of great import for everyone in the land of the morning calm.

In Korea, Christmas is for couples. Every moment of the holiday is the final 15 minutes of that holiday special romantic edition of your favorite show, heartwarming end of A Christmas Carol, or alternatively and more recently, Love Actually.

A true Christmas couple getting an early Christmas Eve start. She even got her present!!! Merry Christmas, guys!!!

It's a time to look one's best, to go on the ultimate romantic date, to be the best couple one can be.

Christmas couples in Korea about and abounding on Christmas Eve.

It's full on romantic Christmas in Korea, Actually!

Christmas is one of the most successfully marketed holidays of the year and also the most lucrative for retailers and a great boost for the consumer economy. For Koreans, it is also the most fun. What other holiday involves as much a gift exchange, bright and gaudy colors, and tons of decoration, not to mention Christmas trees, wreaths, and mistletoe to kiss under? In fact, Christmas is the holiday with this largest overarching theme and set of aesthetic imperatives, complete with a standardized color scheme. It also serves as a great temporal and cultural backdrop to offer extra punch to action films such as Die Hard and even romantic comedies such as Love Actually. Christmas episodes of popular television series offer another point of emotional connection and point of common ground for fans. And for consumers, Christmas offers itself as the biggest theme party of the year.

Which is how the Koreans have come to adopt the holiday -- in terms of all of Christmas' accoutrements, decorations, peripheral trappings. This is most apparent in what for many South Koreans has become the ultimate piece of Christmas related popular culture, the romantic comedy and runaway hit here in East Asia, Love Actually. Since Christmas is, for most South Koreans, primarily a romantic holiday level that is only rivaled by the American emphasis on Valentine's Day, the film Love Actually was a hit here in a way that few Americans who saw that film as just another romantic comedy that happen to be set during the Christmas season could hope to understand. For Koreans, since Christmas was already heavily associated with romance and young couples sharing Christmas cakes together when the film premiered here in the winter of 2006, it hit a mark that simply doesn't exist in the West in quite the same way, since Christmas has long been associated with quiet time spent with family.

In order to understand Christmas in the South Korean context, one does have to understand how compressed economic development and a runaway consumer culture that is actually quite recent created the context in which an American-style, heavily marketed Christmas experience came into being in South Korea. In that sense, Christmas in Korea is very much related to "Gangnam Style." Christmas is very much related to a specific tradition brought from the West, on the shoulders of a religion also brought from the West, but importantly, with the recent emphasis on the superficial trappings of the holiday as it relates to sparkly Christmas trees, ornaments, and the opportunity to kiss under the mistletoe; and to the extent that Christmas offers itself as yet another theme through which romantic comedies can tell a particular kind of story, for South Koreans, that context becomes stripped away and Christmas itself becomes a time of romance itself, replete with gift exchanges and the chance to melodramatically express oneself to a special loved one. Like in the end of that movie.

Love, Actually in Itaewon.
"T
o me, you are perfect."

These Stylish Guys Were The Best Thing To Happen To 2013

We spend lots of time lusting after Hollywood's fashionable leading ladies, picking apart their red carpet gowns and off-duty clothes.

But don't think we've forgotten the men. This year, we developed more than a few celebrity crushes on a group of dudes with style game so tight, it puts ours to shame.

As we near the end of the year, here is an ode to the dapper men we fell in love with in 2013.

Andrew Garfield

andrew garfield

Sure, the Spiderman suit is cool. But Garfield's regular clothes, consisting of sporty jackets, baseball hats, cool kicks and skinny denim, are the real stuff of sartorial superheroes.

Will Smith

will smith

Will's tried almost every fashion trend in the book. But this year, at the ripe old age of 45, the Fresh Prince found his stride as a clean-cut yet laid-back dad, with simple silhouettes, pops of color and even some sneakers. Could your dad do that?

Prince Harry

prince harry

This prince has matured from headline-making partier into a professional royal. But he's maintained his boyish charm with a casual, carefree style sensibility that includes desert boots, low-slung pants and the occasional man jewelry.

Ryan Gosling

ryan gosling

Ryan's one of the only Hollywood men who can keep things interesting and exciting on the red carpet, showing up in velvet suits, saddle shoes and trousers so slim-cut they make our skinny jeans jealous. And when he's not posing for flashbulbs, he's got the most effortlessly cool everyday wardrobe, full of tough jackets, vintage tees and work boots roughened up just the right amount.

Bradley Cooper

bradley cooper

Maybe it's because we know he speaks French. But we always see Bradley as the smoothest of smooth operators, and he's got the slick wardrobe to match. It's Americana prep but with a glossy sheen and a sexy wink -- he may have a peacoat on, but it fits his body like a custom-fit glove.

Justin Timberlake

justin timberlake

Forget 2006 -- this was the year J.T. brought sexy back, courtesy of Tom Ford. Ford ushered in a new Timberlake era by getting the pop icon into a suit and tie and straightening those famous curls into a slick coif. Timberlake has never looked sexier.

Idris Elba

idris elba

Standing at 6' 3", Elba is a commanding presence who can pull off bolder styles, from spread collar shirts and playful beanies to colorful pants and even Toms. Oh, and he wears the heck out of a classic notch-lapel suit. Swoon.

Harry Styles

harry styles

The One Directioner's fashion sense might not be the reason he inspires blood-curdling screams from teenage girls, but it's what gets us excited. Like a young Jamie Hince, Harry somehow makes delicate scarves, the skinniest of jeans and even women's blouses look not only masculine, but sexy. These are rock star clothes for the next generation.

Justin Theroux

justin theroux

The timeless combination of motorcycle jackets, aviator sunglasses and tattoos can come off as cliche; but Justin Theroux makes it look like he's the one who invented the combo. Those impeccably groomed brows complete the package. Theroux is our shinier, Hollywood-approved, 21st-century James Dean.

Pharrell

pharrell

Just as he does with music, Pharrell likes to take a classic look, whether it be a tuxedo or cardigan, and twist it ever so slightly. The result? Something so original you've never seen anything like it. Get a load of this singer/songwriter/producer's cheeky outfits and be inspired.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt

jgl

He isn't slick or flashy, but that's why we love him. JGL's clothes speak volumes in understated tones, whether it's a slim-cut tweed suit or a basic sweater and jeans. For regular guys looking for fashionable dudes to emulate, Joseph's the most relatable icon out there.

Jamie Foxx

jamie foxx

No matter where he is or what he's doing, Jamie always looks like he's in his element. His clothing style is loudly confident but never brash -- any man at any age could learn from his bold shades and youthful zip-ups.

Eddie Redmayne

eddie redmayne

Now that Harry and William are taken, we're gunning for Eddie to be our British prince. With his natty slim-cut suits, chunky scarves and preppy coats, this actor is the picture of a modern English hunk.

Penn Badgley

penn badgley

Not unlike his "Gossip Girl" character, Penn is a hipster dreamboat from Brooklyn with the wardrobe to match. He doesn't mind a little chest hair poking out from those deep v-necks, nor does he mind getting some man jewelry tangled in it. And he certainly doesn't feel the need to wear a stuffy suit on the red carpet.

Zac Efron

zac efron

Efron's style might be described as one part frat boy, two parts Los Angeles hipster. The result? A trendy wardrobe full of beanies, v-necks and jeans... all carried off with swoon-worthy swagger.

Garret Hedlund

garrett hedlund

Kirsten Dunst's beau has the kind of effortlessly cool style that fits right in at a Saint Laurent show. His ties are skinny and his cardis are layered, but he doesn't take his hipster persona so seriously he can't also rock a backwards baseball cap.

David Beckham

david beckham

Sure, he can wear a suit like nobody's business. But this former footballer turned part-time underwear model earns kudos for being the only man on Earth who can make a newsboy cap look cool. Must be the tattoos...

Here are a few more we love...

Lover.ly -- search, save, shop and share wedding ideas in one place.

By Rachel W. Miller for Lover.ly

As we look back on another year gone by, we're reflecting on the biggest trends in weddings from 2013. These wedding styles, colors, and accessories aren't all new (nor are they "over" -- we expect to see more of them in 2014!) but they really caught on in 2013. Here are our top ten favorites:

1. Art Deco.

Thanks to "The Great Gatsby's" spring release, Deco details were everywhere in 2013.

2. Wedding gowns with elegant and dramatic backs.

This daring and romantic look was huge in 2013, and designers are already taking things to the next level for 2014.

3. Neutral bridesmaids dresses.

Bridesmaids dresses in shades of blush, ivory, and beige (or a combination of these hues) made bridal parties look romantic and ethereal this year.

4. Floral crowns.

Hello, halos! This whimsical look was part of a trend we expect to see a lot more of in 2014: 1970s-inspired vintage weddings.

5. Mint green.

Emerald may have been Pantone's 2013 color of the year, but a lighter shade of green was popular for 2013 weddings.

6. Wedding dresses with long sleeves.

Thanks to Kate Middleton, brides everywhere were more covered up in 2013.

7. Gold everything.

We saw a lot of gold wedding details this year, but gold foil invitations are one of the new styles we expect to see a lot more of in 2014.

8. Playful and colorful decor.

In 2013, there was a return to the simpler ways to celebrate: colorful confetti, glitter, pennants, balloons, and paper decorations.

9. Woodland creatures.

Woodsy rustic weddings have been popular for a few years now, but 2013 saw the introduction of several whimsical forest animals into the decor. The most popular? Deer.

10. Marriage equality.

This wasn't exactly a trend, but we were still thrilled to see more states allowing gay couples to marry and more and more same-sex couples heading down the aisle. Cheers to more happy couples in 2014!

Miserable Men Shopping Might Be The Saddest Thing On Instagram

$

It's no secret that many men hate shopping. But if you had any doubt, just swing by your closest mall and take a look: Dozens of men, as far as the eye can see, slumped on couches and benches, surrounded by shopping bags, just... waiting. Looking miserable.

Misery finds company on Instagram with the account miserable_men. Photo after photo of anguished, abandoned dudes out shopping, from the grandpa falling asleep in the mall to the dad waiting outside in the heat with the stroller, will probably make you chuckle a little... and perhaps inspire some sympathy.

To all the men out there still recovering from the misery of Christmas shopping, know that you're not alone.

Next time, instead of dragging him along...

The Rockettes are the picture of perfect uniformity, with every long leg kicking in time with the next. There's even a strict height requirement: Every dancer must be between 5 feet 6 inches and 5 feet 10 inches tall.

Yet two dancers from the legendary dance company recently told HuffPost Live that there is room for individuality in a way we'd never expect: The dancers are responsible for their own hair and makeup.

"We do our own hair and makeup for every show," said Christine Walsh Warren, "because we know ourselves the best!" Color us thoroughly impressed. Now we can add the Rockettes to the list of glamorous performers you never knew did their own makeup along with Miss American contestants and professional ballerinas.

FACE IT: We Need Subtlety in the New Year

$
0
0
Is it just me, or does everything and everyone seem over the top?

Maybe it was surviving three hours of Leonardo di Caprio's unceasing depiction of sex, drugs and profanity in his latest film. Maybe it was watching Miley Cyrus being celebrated by Barbara Walters. Kanya and Kim's every bump and grind?

As my wise psychologist friend Dr. Vivian Diller says, "People are asking what will get them noticed amid all the clutter out there." I certainly appreciate that in these fast-moving times, in which information is pouring out of every pore, it is hard to find your voice, let alone have it heard. This is true in our everyday lives, in which we are simply trying to get others to look up from their gadgets, as well as in the culture bombarding us with images.

In the world of books, not only is everyone over the age of 12 writing a memoir, but no one's life sounds interesting anymore if there wasn't at least abuse and alcohol in the home. On the stage (and now screen), August: Osage County tells the story of a family struggling with alcoholism and abuse, and adds drugs and incest for added pleasure. This is not meant to be a "they don't make them like they used to" lament, but watch or read a couple of Pinter plays and you will once again appreciate the seething emotions that can happen between the lines. Pausing is much missed.

I thought that again while watching the new play Domesticated, a Good Wife-like narrative at New York's Lincoln Center. Every point is repeated over and over, most having to do with the specific sex acts not being performed enough for one partner's satisfaction. Ten lines ago we got the point. Eventually, one can't shake the feeling of a dirty or frustrated man telling the tale.

One also feels that way, I am afraid, watching The Wolf of Wall Street. I revere Martin Scorsese's work, but it's hard not to feel embarrassed this time around. The details may be true -- and clearly, the main character did not live a subtle life -- but it doesn't mean every single one has to be shown. With excess eventually come not only disgust but pure exhaustion.

There is no doubt that doing away with subtlety is, if nothing else, a way to make impact. Getting noticed -- as well as radically altering her image -- was surely on Miley Cyrus' mind when she hit the stage with her infamous twerking performance. Though it reeked of desperation, it "tworked." The backlash lasted about 10 minutes, then the backlash to the backlash kicked in, and then she was on the cover of every magazine and on Barbara's Most Fascinating People list.

I have no idea how deep Miley goes, but I know for a fact that Beyonce is a class act. Yet, watching the 17 videos that go with her new album, I wondered why she too feels the need to repeatedly reveal every female part, ultimately eliciting more boredom than excitement. (Presumably young men would disagree.) She recently claimed that she is determined to follow Madonna's lead as a powerhouse. I'd like to think she meant as a constantly-reinventing creative machine, not as a woman who has to prove her sex appeal in increasingly explicit fashion.

In all this unsubtlety, there is clearly the attempt to reach through and matter. But just because you shock, it doesn't mean it has more emotional impact. In fact, I would say it has less. Josh Brolin putting his hand on Kate Winslet's shoulder in the new film Labor Day sets off more sparks than a naked di Caprio being titillated by a lit candle. (Note: I am not mentioning how a sheet between Clark Gable and Claudette Colbert's beds was sexier than a seven-minute lesbian sex scene now on screen.) Watching 70-year-old Mick Jagger do his thing in concert is simpler, yet more sensual, than watching Miley click that tongue or even Beyonce writhe in fast motion. One tattoo can be alluring while an NBA-style body of them becomes a blur.

Restraint is not only missed, it should be applauded when one finds it in unexpected places. For example, director Jason Reitman shows it in Labor Day. The Broadway revival (emphasis on revival) of No Man's Land, starring Ian McKellan and Patrick Stewart, is a master class in not having to say it -- but getting the meaning loud and clear. Likewise, there is comfort in the fact that the 1965 novel Stoner by one John Williams is suddenly on many reading lists. Heralded as an unappreciated classic, it is packed with emotional resonance without one whip or overstated sentiment. This is the real 50 shades of gray.

I wish many things for the new year, but a return to subtlety would be at the top of the list. Leave us some ambiguity; don't hit us over the head; let your great music stand for itself; give us a moment to ponder.

Obama Christmas Address Encourages Americans To Help Those In Need

$

HONOLULU (AP) — President Barack Obama is encouraging Americans to embrace the spirit of Christmas by volunteering at a soup kitchen, buying gifts for kids in need, or organizing food and clothing drives.

In his weekly radio and Internet address, Obama says the values Jesus taught can spur Americans of all faiths to be better parents, friends, neighbors and citizens.

First lady Michelle Obama says the nation should show gratitude by supporting military members and their families.

The Obamas recorded the Christmas message in Washington before leaving Friday for their annual vacation in Hawaii.

Watch the weekly address above, or read the full text below (via The White House):

THE PRESIDENT: Hello everybody, and happy holidays.

THE FIRST LADY: We know how busy this time of year is for everyone, so we’re not going to take much of your time. But we did want to take a moment to wish you all a Merry Christmas, from our family to yours.

THE PRESIDENT: This is a season for millions of Americans to be together with family, to continue long-held holiday traditions, and to show our gratitude to those we love. And along the way, some of us might even watch a little basketball or eat some Christmas cookies, too.

THE FIRST LADY: Here at the White House, over the past few weeks, we’ve had about 70,000 people from all across the country come visit us and look at our holiday decorations.

This year’s theme was “Gather Around: Stories of the Season.”

And in every room of the house, we tried to tell a story about who we are as Americans and how we celebrate the holidays together.

And we made certain to highlight some of the most powerful stories we know – the stories of our outstanding troops, veterans, and military families and their service and sacrifice for our country.

THE PRESIDENT: Our extraordinary men and women in uniform are serving so that the rest of us can enjoy the blessings we cherish during the holidays. But that means many of our troops are far from home and far from family. They’re spending some extra time on the phone with their loved ones back home. Or they’re setting up video chats so they can watch as the presents are opened. So today, we want all of our troops to know that you’re in our thoughts and prayers this holiday season.

And here’s the good news: For many of our troops and newest veterans, this might be the first time in years that they’ve been with their families on Christmas. In fact, with the Iraq war over and the transition in Afghanistan, fewer of our men and women in uniform are deployed in harm’s way than at any time in the last decade.

THE FIRST LADY: And that’s something we all can be thankful for.

And with more and more of our troops back here at home, now it’s our turn to serve – it’s our turn to step up and show our gratitude for the military families who have given us so much.

And that’s why Jill Biden and I started our Joining Forces initiative – to rally all Americans to support our military families in ways large and small.

And again and again, we have been overwhelmed by the response we’ve gotten as folks from across the country have found new ways to give back to these families through their schools, businesses, and houses of worship.

THE PRESIDENT: That’s the same spirit of giving that connects all of us during the holidays. So many people all across the country are helping out at soup kitchens, buying gifts for children in need, or organizing food or clothing drives for their neighbors. For families like ours, that service is a chance to celebrate the birth of Christ and live out what He taught us – to love our neighbors as we would ourselves; to feed the hungry and look after the sick; to be our brother’s keeper and our sister’s keeper. And for all of us as Americans, regardless of our faith, those are values that can drive us to be better parents and friends, better neighbors and better citizens.

THE FIRST LADY: So as we look to the New Year, let’s pledge ourselves to living out those values by reaching out and lifting up those in our communities who could use a hand up.

THE PRESIDENT: So Merry Christmas, everyone. And from the two of us, as well as Malia, Sasha, Grandma, Bo…

THE FIRST LADY: And Sunny, the newest Obama.

THE PRESIDENT: We wish you all a blessed and safe holiday season.

THE FIRST LADY: Happy holidays everybody, and God bless.

Kate Middleton Repeats Tartan Coat At Sandringham For Christmas (PHOTOS)

It's not Christmas until the British royals make their way to Sandringham.

Kate Middleton, Prince William, Queen Elizabeth II and the rest of the Buckingham Palace crew arrived at St. Mary Magdalene Church in King's Lynn this morning for Christmas Day services, decked out in their holiday finest. The Duchess of Cambridge arrived in a tan overcoat only to reveal that she was wearing a tartan Alexander McQueen dress coat, the very same one she wore in November 2012 to play field hockey -- yes, field hockey -- at St. Andrew's. The new mom topped off the look with a festive green hat by Gina Foster.

Walking into the church hand-in-hand with William, Kate and her hubby fielded questions about Prince George, who was notably absent from the festivities. "We've had a good morning with George and I can't wait until next year when he's bigger," Will said.

Prince Harry, recently back from his trek to Antarctica, joined the family at Sandringham bearded and solo (sorry, Cressida Bonas), while Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie looked very stylish in their coat/hat ensembles. As expected, there were no other Middletons in sight, but Kate's parents are predicted to join the royals for Boxing Day tomorrow.

Per tradition, gifts were exchanged during Christmas Eve so that the family can focus on religious services and the traditional turkey lunch during Christmas Day, which will take place at 1:15pm before the Queen's speech on television at 3pm.

Check out the royals in all their Christmas glory below!
