How A Midwest Thunderstorm Resulted In Magical Engagement Photos

There are certain moments in our lives -- vacations, wedding days, family picnics -- when rain is basically the worst thing ever. But once in a while, the rain we dread so much creates a memory we never saw coming.

This was the case for Jeff and Jessica, a young couple who recently planned their engagement shoot in the small town of Kelly, Kan. only to have it interrupted by one of those famous midwest thunderstorms.

Of course the lovebirds and their photographer, from Salt and Pine Photo, decided to turn lemons into lemonade -- which resulted in one of the most enchanting engagement photos we've ever seen. Here's their story:

The day started out fine, the couple is all smiles stealing kisses on Jeff's family farm.

Then, the storm clouds came in, ominously looming overhead.

The rain began to pour down on them -- but Jeff and Jessica powered though it.

Their photographers Joe and Darryl thought an outfit change might give the rain a chance to stop -- and it did for a minute.

But then the rain had other plans and became a full on downpour; Soaking them head to toe.

And this one -- all of which would not be possible had they gone inside.

If this engagement shoot is any indication of their marriage, we have a feeling this couple can weather any storm thrown their way.

It's Fall! Make Sure Your Skincare Routine Is In Season

2014-09-25-iStock_000014828855Large.jpgWhat do heirloom tomatoes and skincare have in common? As I am relishing the last tomatoes of the summer season and getting myself into a fall frame of mind, I am reminded that skincare should be seasonal, too. While safe and effective skincare is a year-round pursuit, certain times of year require extra effort. Fall is a case in point. After the ravages of summer sun and increased opportunities for free radical damage (aka aging), your skin needs a bit of extra help to recover its glow.

I ran this idea by two of the most respected skincare experts I know. Angelina Umansky, fourth generation esthetician and Bay Area beauty expert, agreed wholeheartedly. "Throughout the summer, the skin builds up a layer of dead skin. And residue from all that sunscreen acts as a barrier, preventing skincare products from penetrating the skin. So, an important first step in the process of repairing summer sun damage is to exfoliate." To make sure you exfoliate wisely, check out these exfoliation do's and don'ts.

In addition, Angelina recommends including Topical Vitamin C in your fall routine to brighten your skin and prevent further free radical damage. Finally, to increase cell turnover rate and increase collagen production, she reminds us not to forget retinol.

Dr. Eric Alden Lewis, respected Beverly Hills Dermatologist, agrees that exfoliation, Vitamin C and retinol are key components for your fall skin care routine. Importantly, he reminds us that "a critical component of fall skin care is lubrication, lubrication, lubrication. With fall, skin dryness becomes a major concern. Skin dryness ages the skin and increases damage from sun exposure."

With this in mind, I recommend face oils and serums for the fall season. As always, choose products that work from the inside out, penetrating all the way to the lipid barrier. The reason is simple: the older you get, the fewer lipids you produce and that makes your lipid barrier way less effective at holding moisture in and keeping the elements like sun and wind out. Effective face oils and serums can replenish the lipid barrier to create softer, smoother, more hydrated skin. If you're still on the fence about using face oil in your daily skin care routine, please read my earlier post: "The Great Debate: Face Oils vs Creams." Everyone I know who has made the switch to face oils would never turn back.

Men: When It Comes To Being Stylish, Start With Your Shoes

2014-09-25-imgshoe.jpg

Women everywhere have reason to celebrate: millennial men are officially fashionable, much more so than their Baby Boomer parents. Since 2009, growth in men's ready-to-wear has outpaced that of women's wear. Wonder why you haven't heard the term "metrosexual" recently? Because a forward-thinking, well-dressed man is no longer taboo. The rapid growth of e-commerce is changing the retail experience and enlisting more men into the ranks of the truly stylish. The big-box shopping experience has never suited the average male because men buy, women shop.

That being said, most men's closets -- when it comes to suits -- still look something like this: dark navy and grey suits and jackets, crisp white and blue button downs with a few checks and stripes mixed in, and a handful of khaki and grey slacks. The tie rack is draped with stripes and prints and a few cuff links idle on the dresser. And what about the shoe rack? There's probably a go-to black oxford or derby (hopefully not square-toed) that sits next to a less-utilized deep brown pair.

Women have always known that fashion is not about "fitting in." It's about standing out and showcasing your personality. Many men are still missing the opportunity to properly market themselves in professional and social interactions which sends the message that details don't matter.

So, where to start? Easy. A stunning pair of shoes will make a simple off-the-rack suit look powerful, just as a plain pair will make a heavenly custom-tailored suit seem earthbound. Start with your shoes because they are the "coup de grace" of any outfit. Here are 3 tips for choosing great dress shoes that will make a lasting impression:

1. Understand the styles.

The three main styles of men's dress shoes are the oxford, bluchers and loafer. In oxfords the tongue is hidden by the facing which contains the laces. In bluchers the tongue runs seamlessly into the front of the shoe or upper.

Oxfords are the most classic, elegant, and dressy in this shoe family, capable of elevating any outfit. Bluchers, on the other hand, are less suited for formal wear, but their "smart-casual" appearance works well in a more social setting.

Lastly, loafers are laceless and every man's favorite because of comfort and ease of slipping shoes on and off. Loafers can run from a soft pair of driving moccasins to a dressier tassel loafer. It's important to be conscious of how your loafers react with your outfit. Too dressy a loafer in a dressed-down situation can seem forced, while a casual driver with a suit can border on sloppy.

Those three styles all have a place in your wardrobe, but don't be afraid of the dress boot. Gaining in popularity in formal settings, a dress chukka or Chelsea boot shows you mean business. It's an alternative look to the classics, while your pant leg will cover up the higher boot ankles, leaving simply the smooth, minimalist look of the boot's upper and quarter.

2. Pick quality materials.

Look for brands using calfskin leather from the southern parts of Europe, such as Italy, Spain and France. All of Paul Evans styles, for instance, are made in a family owned factory in Naples.

Leather soles, leather lining and extra sole padding are all signs of quality. With proper care, a quality dress shoes will last you the rest of your life. It will develop its own unique patina (or skin) as you clean and shine it over time. A timely resoling is like changing the tires on your car. A cheap pair will come apart at the glued seams and will no longer be wearable after a few years.

3. Choose your color wisely.

Your standard black and deep brown will certainly get you through the workday, but shoe color is a great time to think differently than the masses. In lieu of a monotone black, look for a hand painted black. With hand painting, the depth of black pops on closer examination, revealing light and dark shades of grey. In some of our newer Paul Evans styles, you can take it a bit further, choosing a leather shoe in forest green or deep sea blue. These unique colors are actually quite easy to wear with your work suit because they are so dark and formal upon first glance.

For your browns, think beyond your standard, stale shade of brown. Add some pop by choosing an oxblood, a reddish brown, or a burgundy, a brown that skews purple. These are two amazing alternatives that you can wear every day with any color suit (other than black). On the lighter scale, cognac adds white, yellows and oranges to your brown for a perfect spring and summer color.

With these three tips in hand, go ahead and step out of the box. Find a pair of dress shoes that make you stand out and take your entire wardrobe to the next level.

Steal His Fashion: Menswear Inspired Looks

$
0
0
Menswear has definitely been a source of female style inspiration for many years.

Is this because guy inspired fashion has the ability to provide a polished look, which in turn allows us gals to exude a certain kind of power and conviction?

Maybe it's simply because rocking some sneakers is just way more comfortable than a crippling pair of high heels. I don't know, you do the math.

All that I can say is that there is just something so incredibly chic about a woman confidently working a pant suit.

Male prints and fabrics allow women to play up a stronger suit as opposed to the stereotypically softer, more colorful hues and materials associated with female fashion. The simplicity of menswear really is something to embrace, and when embellished with hints of feminine touches, can create a look that is both stunningly androgynous and convenient to wear.

So relinquish sartorial convention and try picking up a few tricks from the boys by adding just the right amount of dude to your feminine duds. Add several of these very potentially posh pieces into your style repertoire for a surefire way to get some heads turning.

Oxford Shirt

Flattering on any body type, the button-down oxford shirt can be played up or down in a myriad of occasions. This type of shirt provides an irrefutably refined appearance when paired with any form of bottom from shorts to slacks to a pleated skirt.

Add a touch of casual and layer an unbuttoned oxford over a tank and some jeans or try it under a blazer for a preppy ensemble. The denim chambray oxford is always a great alternative when looking for an edgier contemporary aesthetic.

The Power Suit

With the creation of Yves Saint Laurent's le smoking, the first female crafted tuxedo suit, it became a controversial statement of femininity to blur the lines of masculinity and transcending gender rules in an entirely new fashion.

The sleek semblance of a power suit commands respect and attention to any woman courageous enough to don this three-piece affair. Perfect for any professional environment, the suit is a quiet way of telling everyone not to mess with you.

Try a simple pantsuit at the office or play it up for a social occasion by trying the all white suit or wearing a bandeau under your jacket instead of a full on button-up blouse.

Feel free to mix and match the separate pieces with other articles of clothing, and try a bold lipstick color for a funky yet classic ensemble.

Watch Out

One of my favorite aspects about menswear is the watch. I love a good masculine watch; therefore I see no harm in borrowing from the gentlemen when it comes to timepieces. I believe in chunky watchbands and wide opulent faces with intricate inner mechanics.

A stylish and high quality watch will never go out of style and will become a piece that you can cherish for years to come and wear on a daily basis (so that you'll never again be fashionably late).

Pair your watch with gold bracelets and bangles for a feminine touch. Just because you have delicate wrists doesn't mean you don't have to be on time, am I right?

Overalls

Although one may initially think of the overall as a male worker's uniform, they are certainly back in style and incredibly comfortable to wear both day and night. The denim onesie can be a very tricky look to pull off successfully. The main issue with this item typically is how to wear it in a fashionable and unfarmer-esque manner.

In order to achieve a stylish overall-based outfit, avoid the spaghetti strap tank, flannel top, or bralette (this isn't the 90's any more) and elect to wear more mature under-layers such as delicate blouses, striped tees and crisp white shirts. Long legged pant overalls are perfect for the upcoming fall season over a knit sweater or jersey tee.

Sporty Chick

Athletic inspired gear isn't only for the guys on the football team. The appropriate mix of polo shirt and even sweats can all come together to conceive a very "trendy girl meets urban downtown" appeal.

Beat the boys at their own game by adding flashy accessories and touches of feminine flare for a look that's just downright cool. Channel your inner tomboy and pair a varsity jacket with a feminine silhouette such as a skirt or a dress with a collared neckline.

I tip my hat to all of the well-dressed gentlemen of the world, but your pastel colored Dockers and floral print blazers are no match for a lady in a well fitted tuxedo jacket (although your attempts at feminine wear are definitely not going unnoticed).

But it looks like us girls are giving you a run for your money, and proving to be standout competitors in your very own playing field.

Fall Arrived This Week, Bringing Darker, Romantic Styles

$

By Gina Rivera, Phenix President, Founder and Hair Expert

Fall is here. Technically, it arrived this week with the equinox. Temperatures are cooling (we've already had our first snow in Colorado), days will grow darker and, if we haven't already, we begin to move our hair toward darker shades and update the styles.

This is also a great time to plan for the Holiday Season, and, specifically, we should make appointments to see our stylists. Schedules quickly fill this time of year and you don't want to be left in the cold.

Many of us will head toward reds, and this has been predicted for months, that the deep, rich reds will be popular again. Also expected are some dark browns and I'll be looking for some black shades. What I don't anticipate are the ombres, giving way to soft highlights instead. This move away from ombres is well underway with hair headed toward more natural, gentle, less dramatic tonal transitions.

In haircuts and styles, wavy bobs and romantic updos are showing a lot of strength. I'm curious about the fate this fall and winter of slick-back looks. These have been so strong on the red carpets and runways lately, including the Big Four Fashion Weeks finishing soon in Paris. These shows are for spring and summer styles next year but "who's waiting?"

Intermixed we've seen some softer, less controlled looks working their way in. Betsey Johnson presented her line in New York (these shows are for clothing primarily but we see trendsetting hair, too) with some beautiful bobs with lots of sexy, messy volume, some of them teased out madly. This was the antithesis of the slick-back look. It wouldn't be a surprise at all to see more of this and maybe sooner than later.

Sarah Hyland of "Modern Family" wore a high bun at the Emmys recently but it wasn't ballerina tight. Her hair had a soft, loose look with romantic wisps around her face and soft highlights, a great transition style into fall. "Mad Men" costar Jessica Paré at the Emmys wore a tighter bun in back but even this had a softer look and shine than some of the more severe finishes we've seen. Halle Berry was among several stars at the Emmys with a pixie. Hers was soft and feathery.

In addition to the buns, a lot of hairstyles incorporating braids have been popular heading into fall and winter with both soft, wispy looks and controlled, shiny finishes. Some of these braids are tracing the hairline along the forehead, others are featured in a chignon.

Remember, if you're thinking about a transition from summery shades of honey to something dark and deep, you'll probably need more than one appointment with your stylist to make that happen beautifully. With the Holiday Season nearly here, don't hesitate to line up a date with your stylist. If you're looking to have something done for a Halloween party, better make that call now.

As always, be open to change!

What Gameday Looks Like At These College Campuses (PHOTOS)

Tailgating is a time-honored tradition for American college students, especially at big state universities or D-1 athletic schools. It's great because you don't actually have to know anything about sports, just come filled with pride for your college.

We combed through some of the hashtags people were using to post photos from gameday -- #rolltide #HookEm #nolenation -- and collected a batch of images to show what tailgaiting is like at various campuses around the country. For good measure, we included a few shots from inside the stadiums too, because how could we not show off people using jetpacks and parachutes above the football field?!

Men's Style: 4 Tips for Looking Taller and Leaner This Fall

$
0
0
One of the first things I ask every man I work with is, what do you want to play up or play down about your physical appearance. Many responses include some combination of looking taller and leaner.

Knowing how to wear clothing well can help you accomplish this with greater success than you might think. The right look can create a smoke-and-mirrors effect that will have you earning more compliments than you may have ever received.

Fall is a great time to learn how to dress to look taller and slimmer because you can play with layers. Read on for my 4 top tips for looking like you've added inches onto your height and shaving lbs off your width.

2014-09-25-JWP_rath073.jpg
1) Make sure your pants aren't too long.

When you have excess "puddling" of material around your ankles, the eye gets drawn downward, thereby making you look shorter. But, by having your dress pants hemmed to minimum break, you'll reduce all that unnecessary material, allowing the eye to rise up to the other details in your outfit (see #4), which make you look taller.

2014-09-25-Stripes.png

2) Create as many vertical and diagonal lines within your look as possible.

The eye follows whatever direction the lines go. So if you have vertical or diagonal lines in your outfit, that's how the eye will travel, making you appear longer and leaner.

These lines can be within patterns or as part of the lines in your clothing. This includes verticals and diagonals in your suit jacket and the vertical line created by a scarf. And don't forget about a hoodie and puffer vest combo. The vertical lines created by the zippers of the hoodie and vest work to elongate your look.

You live in a warmer climate? Not to worry. The diagonals in a v-neck t-shirt have a similar lengthening effect.

Bonus Tip: I tell clients who want to look taller or reduce weight around their face and neck to only wear v-neck t-shirts and sweaters, as crewnecks can make you appear choked up around your neck, which results in your looking shorter and wider overall.

2014-09-26-Monochromatic_colors.jpg
3) Wear dark colors and the same tones on top as on bottom.

Light colors make things look larger, so it makes sense to wear dark colors if you want to appear slimmer.

Another trick in this vein is to wear the same color or at least similar tones of color on top as you do on bottom. In this way, you avoid the horizontal line that a color break across your middle creates, cutting you in half and shortening your stature. Likewise, avoid wearing a belt that contrasts strongly with the rest of your outfit, as it both draws attention to your waistline and makes you look shorter.

2014-09-25-JWP_rath067.jpg
4) Use clothing details that draw attention to your upper half.

When your look draws people's eyes upward, there's an automatic association with height, and as a result it creates visual length. One way to do this is to wear peak lapels on your suit jackets and sport coats. Another way is through colored button threading on your lapels, pocket squares and scarves. When you add these details you bring the focus upward toward your chest, shoulders and face.

Are you sensing a theme yet?

Looking taller and slimmer is all about controlling the direction the eye goes so that you can create a visual streamline. When you take control of your look in these four ways, you create dramatic and powerful results. It can completely transform both how you feel about yourself and how you're perceived by the outside world.

This is the high-end fashion we love to drool over admire -- Dior, Balmain, Dries Van Noten... the list goes on. The models are on top of their runway game, fashion editors are killing the street style and the front row seaters are mostly Kim and Kanye.

As such, we're totally copping to stalking photos of all things PFW on Twitter and we can't get enough. Dior had fun house mirrors outside the Louvre and Julien David debuted his Spring collection with a dance video of ballerinas. Add a macaron and it doesn't get more Parisian than that.

With fall in full swing and election season just around the corner, Erin Gloria Ryan had a genius ploy to get people to the voting booths: "Everyone would vote if there was free pizza." If there was free pizza, people would be trying to vote twice.

In other news, Kim Kardashian and Kanye West might have some tough competition for the most famous celebrity couple since Chris Martin and Jennifer Lawrence are rumored to be dating. Callie Beusman asked a good question when she tweeted, "Are Chris Martin's kids Team Peeta or Team Gale?" We'd go with Team Peeta but to each their own.

Witherspoon, who produced "Gone Girl," wowed on the red carpet in a form-fitting red gown:

In a recent interview with Vanity Fair, the 38-year-old actress opened up about why she felt compelled to work behind the scenes for the film:

“A couple of years ago I started looking at the scripts that were coming in, just through the normal Hollywood pipeline, and I was sort of dissatisfied with the parts for women," the actress said.

"And I thought, if I don’t get busy trying to produce things –- for myself, for other women –- who’s gonna do it?”

BYU Students Protest School's Ban On Beards

$

PROVO, Utah (AP) -- A group of Brigham Young University students is protesting the Mormon church-owned school's ban on something its namesake once sported: a beard.

About 50 students, some donning paper beards, biked, skateboarded or rollerbladed their way from the Provo City Library to campus during the "Bike for Beards" protest on Friday night.

"I love BYU. I love being a student here," protest organizer Shane Pittson said. "But the rule on beards I find particularly outdated."

The 23-year-old international studies major and other students have launched a petition drive to get the school to lift the ban.

University spokeswoman Carri Jenkins said students agree to its grooming standards before their first day of class and the beard ban was set in place by students.

"It's nothing against beards. It's just how we choose to represent ourselves at the university," she told The Salt Lake Tribune (http://bit.ly/1pkn2fh ).

Brigham Young and many other early leaders of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints grew beards as they aged. A statue of Young in downtown Salt Lake City depicts him with a beard, but another at BYU shows him clean-shaven.

The BYU Honor Code, created in the 1940s, states that "men are expected to be clean-shaven" and beards are not acceptable. But students can be exempted from the prohibition if they have a medical condition such as scarring.

Among other things, the university's mandatory student contract also forbids premarital sex, alcohol consumption and tattoos.

In 1971, then-university President Dallin Oaks defended the beard ban as "contemporary and pragmatic," but he said he would be surprised if it was not eventually changed.

At the time, Oaks said beards and long hair on men were elements of "slovenly appearance" linked to "protest, revolution and rebellion against authority. They are also symbols of hippie and drug culture."

Pittson enjoyed growing his own beard this summer, but he shaved before the protest.

"I figured it would make more of an impact to say, `I respect the university and here I am abiding by the rules but asking for change,' " he told The Tribune.
