Lobs are cool, and long waves are pretty — but, this spring, we're daring ourselves to think outside the (hair) box by trying the "black sheep" of the coiff world. Flyaways? Cornrows? Mullets? We may have been guilty of turning up our noses at some of these looks, but now we're eating our words and ready to take these straight-from-the-runway 'dos to the street.

Jeopardy Contestant Tells Trebek He's Wearing 'Fancy Suit' Made By Children

A Jeopardy contestant accused host Alex Trebek of wearing a suit made in a sweatshop during an episode of the game show that aired Wednesday.

The showdown begins around 1:30 in the video above, when Trebek introduces contestant Tom Cavanaugh, who then says he plans to spend his winnings from the show on a documentary about sweatshop labor.

"I went to Bangladesh about 10 years ago and toured a garment factory and I thought, 'What if, what if I saw a shirt that I was wearing being made by these people.'" Cavanaugh begins. "And so it's to try to put a face on who makes our clothes."

So far, pretty tame. Then Cavanaugh goes right for the jugular: "Maybe you can find out the names of the 8-year-olds who made your fancy suit there, Alex."

To which the audience belts out a collective, "Ooooohhhhhh."

"Was that a low blow?" Cavanaugh sarcastically asks.

The truth is a lot of us probably wear clothing made by people working in sweatshop-like conditions. Some of the America's biggest retailers, like Walmart and Gap, use factories in countries like Bangladesh where safety conditions are pretty terrible.

So, yeah.

If you haven't already noticed, beards are back! Well, they really didn't go anywhere but the whiskered look is definitely enjoying quite the resurgence. In fact, the New York Times calls the look a "scruffy fashion statement" that has grown from it's trendy roots in Brooklyn to corporate board rooms, sports fields and beyond.

With that said, it's no surprise that we stumbled upon Bearded and Black, a Tumblr page filled with fine black men sporting fantastic facial hair. And it's not just the beards we're digging. These dudes are also serving up some serious style.

We couldn't resist rounding up a few of our favorite photos from the site. Check out these dapper brothas with beards...

Katy Perry wants to wish you a happy birthday ... kind of.

The "Roar" singer took to Twitter on Thursday to debut the cover of her next single, "Birthday," off of the "Prism" album. The image, which she captioned, "In honor of #TBT may I present the cover of my NEXXXT single, BIRTHDAY," took advantage of Throwback Thursday with an old-school family photo, in which her sister's face is blurred.

Shortly after posting the image, Perry tweeted that if her 52 million followers could manage to get #BIRTHDAY trending, that she would de-blur her sassy sidekick. When the tag began to trend, Perry revealed her sister's face. Birthday balloons and a cake have been half-heartedly photoshopped onto the picture, making the whole thing look a bit like a cheap birthday card.

Listen to "Birthday" and decide for yourself whether the artwork fits the tune.

Somehow, the Irish manage to make everything just a wee bit more awesome.

Case in point? This incredible surprise wedding dance a groom and his guests performed for the lucky bride.

Now, we've seen some amazing wedding dance videos before: this wedding entrance dance down the aisle, the Harlem Shake during the ceremony, the BFF's Britney Spears dance at the reception -- but this one, which took place at the wedding of Mairead McCargo and Rob Wilson in Belfast, has us actually saying, "OMG! How did they do that?"

You have to see it for yourself above. Then, thank us in the comments section.

Anderson Cooper has talked about his child modeling days before, but he recently opened up about the disturbing experience that led him to quit.

Cooper started modeling at age 10, and worked for Ford Models. Earlier this week, he sat down with Howard Stern, who asked him why he stopped at age 13.

"I got propositioned by a photographer...a male," Cooper recalled. "He somehow got my number and called me up and offered me money, and it so freaked me out. I never told anybody. I just stopped. I was like, 'Forget it.'"

"At that point, you were obviously aware you were gay, but it wasn’t like you wanted to be with an adult man," Stern continued.

"Yeah, I was 13 years old. I wasn’t even thinking about sex with anybody," Cooper said. When asked if he thought the photographer knew he was gay, he said, "I don’t think he had any idea. You know, maybe he did—I honestly don’t know. I think he saw that I was on my own, that I didn’t have a parent or guardian there."

His comments begin at the 8:00 mark in the clip above. He shared his thoughts about Alec Baldwin and discussed his career in the same interview.

Alexa Ray Joel Slams Plastic Surgery Rumors, Stands Up To Bullies

Alexa Ray Joel might look different than when you last saw her, but the musician and daughter of Christie Brinkley and Billy Joel is slamming rumors she's had extensive plastic surgery and is putting bullies in their place.

On Wednesday, April 2, Joel posted a photo of herself after her performance at the Cafe Carlyle in New York City and addressed those rumors.

"On a personal (and slightly ridiculous note): I would just like to add that all of the continuously-circulating rumors that I have had extensive 'face-work' and undergone breast-augmentation surgery is simply and entirely 100% false. The only thing I have ever had done is my nose, which I have always been completely candid, honest, and open about," she wrote. " Any visibly-positive alterations in terms of my public-image are an absolute and sole credit to my brilliant makeup-artist and stylist, @darlingcait ... Who is a true beauty-wizard and visionary."

Anyone who has learned how to contour their face knows that a good makeup artist can be just as transformative as a surgeon, and Joel didn't take cruel comments about her appearance lying down. The 28-year-old posted her own comment on Us Weekly's post that compared Joel's new look to a photo from 2001, when she was just 16 years old.

"This is absolutely hysterical!!! I was 13 years old in the pic posted as a 'before.' In this latter pic, I am 28 years old [that's the age I am now]," she wrote, though we will note her math is off by a few years. "I have lost weight simply from maturing, and I have fully contoured 'stage makeup' and hair done for my first debut show at the Carlyle Hotel in NYC. Obviously I'm going to look different, it's called 'growing up'!"

Joel again stated that the only plastic surgery she's had is a rhinoplasty, and suggested that everyone picking her apart take a long hard look in the mirror.

"Anyways...sorry to disappoint everyone...I don't have low self-esteem at all, contrary to all of your unsubstantiated opinions, and I accept and love myself for exactly who I am, as every empowered woman should!" she wrote, adding, "To the nasty bullying-bloggers who seem to get a kick out of picking apart, psychoanalyzing, and objectifying complete strangers...Why not take a long look in the mirror and worry about yourself?"

Bizarre Truths About the Brassiere

$
0
0
Most of the time it is a mindless action I do every morning and night. It has just become incorporated into my daily routine -- putting on my bra and taking it off. Recently, a few close male friends asked me about what it's like having to wear a bra everyday after seeing a sizing guide for bras: What does it feel like to wear a bra? How many do you need to own? How much are they? This really got me pondering, and I think it would be good for every woman to stop and really examine this garment that holds so much history and meaning in society.

Some backstory
It seems that having something to protect and promote boobs has been around for centuries. Certain ways of folding fabric to shield the breasts and nipples have dated back to ancient Egyptian and Roman times, among other civilizations. From then, through the Middle Ages, and to the present, women have been wearing some kind of garment on their chest.

The bra we are familiar with today had its beginnings in 1913 with its inventor Mary Phelps Jacob. After getting frustrated with the corset, both the fit and look with her evening dress, she fashioned a bra out of two handkerchiefs and a ribbon. Her friends then wanted a bra too, soon followed by a stranger who wanted to pay Jacob for a bar. This was when the brassiere became patented. Jacob knew she was on to something.

As time progressed into the 1920s, the preferred silhouette for women became more boy-like requiring a flatter-chested look. Corsets were out the window and bras took center stage, which provided women with a more comfortable option. 1940s and 1950s fashion called for breasts to be more cone-shaped, enter the bullet bra. The next trend was the Wonder Bra that came out in 1964 to give the ultimate push-up, but lost favor until the 1990s when this bra had a come back.

Later in the 1960s was when the concept of bra-burning came into existence. Bra-burning was an action to be done in protest where women would set their brassieres on fire. The protest against the Miss America pageant in 1968, while no bras were actually burned, this is where the legend started of bra-burning. Although many women during this time did not actually burn their bras, it was a symbolic notion on the politics of the time. While bra-burning took on many different meaning then and now, it stands that bras embody so much more than just fabric and underwire.

Bras have gone through a lot of transformations -- different fabrics, cup shapes, and support - which are usually the result of shifts in American society that impacts women's roles.

American society and the over-the-shoulder boulder-holder

Bras have long had a deeper, sometimes emotional meaning in American society. How a woman's breasts look tend to be a much bigger deal to other people than to the woman herself. In my younger years I would wear push-up and padded bras because I was a late bloomer. I wanted my boobs to look like the other girls'. One day I wore a padded bra instead of a push-up -- it gave me a slightly flatter look than the push-up -- and I was harassed by many of the boys at school, openly and to my face. A similar occurrence has happened to many of my female friends and family. This phenomenon also seems to affect women outside of my circle -- even women in positions of power. Actress turned writer/director Lake Bell expressed this in an interview that if you're a woman in a position of authority should you still wear a push-up bra? Because if you do wear one that could that send the wrong message to those you are managing or to those who are above you in the hierarchy in the workplace. It's funny how a garment that is worn under our clothing has such an impact on those around us outwardly.

Bras now
Personally, I love bras. I think they can make a woman feel sexy and beautiful. I buy lingerie more for myself than for the person I am with. I also understand that bras can have a deeper meaning, that they come with some extra baggage that most of the time I honestly don't even think about. The more I have spoken with a variety of women the more I believe this to be true for them as well.

I spoke with a previous Victoria Secret sales associate about bras and it was a fantastic conversation about what bras really imply in today's society, both the pros and cons.

"It seems that a woman will buy that same type of bra over and over, not get any variety. If she is interested in push-up bras she will buy all push-up bras. Actually, push-up bras are the most common style women buy. It's because it gives the look of larger, perkier breasts. Our actual boob size isn't good enough."

Bras are a necessary, wonderful evil, I suppose. It is not acceptable to go out in public without one on, and I really wouldn't want to because of possible physical pain (nipples chaffing). I don't like being judged on the size of my breasts, but I do like feeling sexy in a gorgeous bra. It's a daily battle that will continue on for women. There is so much meaning and history in such a small piece of clothing for but then again, isn't that how many articles of women's clothing are?

Wedding Hairstyles: Choosing the Right Hairstyle for You

During the wedding gown search, brides are able to try on sample after sample before saying yes to the dress. That's what makes choosing a hairstyle difficult: It's impossible to do a trial run of every style you're interested in.

When it came time for me to select a dress, I didn't mess around. In fact, I ended up buying the very first one I tried on -- an A-line Casablanca. Three months later, with six and half months to go before we say, "I do," my hairstyle search is deadlocked. So I decided to see what advice the professionals have to offer. For all the brides out there, who, like me, are having a hard time committing to a hairdo, here's some helpful advice from past Martha Stewart master hairstylist Anthony Sorensen, who now works at Juut Salonspa in Edina, Minn.

Pinpoint your wedding style and schedule a consultation

2014-04-04-weddingstyle.jpg

Are you a modern bride? Vintage? Classic? Glamorous? Rustic? Think of the words that describe your attire, venue, décor and overall design. Then keep these words in mind when searching for styles. Also, Sorensen adds, "Stay classic! Trends come and go and you want your wedding photos to be timeless."
Cut out a save your favorites, then schedule an appointment with a wedding hairstylist who can help you narrow down the options. Don't already have a trusted hairstylist? Not a problem. Ask other brides in the area who they worked with, and do some research about their experience online.

"Always do a trial with your stylist," Sorensen says. "It calms nerves on the big day."

Consider the dress

2014-04-04-312.jpg

Depending on your dress' neckline, shape, fabric and/or special features, certain hairstyles will look better than others. You'll also want to bring a photo of your dress and any accessories to the hair consultation. Talking about the options once you have it narrowed down to a few styles makes it easier to find the perfect match.

"I always consider the neckline on a wedding dress. If it's high I usually go up. If it's low, down could look better," Sorensen says. "For complicated dress designs, try to keep it simple." You don't want your hair to take away from the dress!

Up do or don't?

2014-04-04-bridalheadpiece.jpg

"Consider time of year you're getting married when choosing whether or not to put it up," Sorensen says. "For humid summer months, it's probably a good idea to go with an up do. It will stay and you won't have to worry about it. For dry fall and winter months, it's better to leave it down."

Don't be a daredevil

2014-04-04-simplebeautifulbridalfashion.jpg

Your wedding day is not the time to try anything drastic that could create damaging effects. If you've never cut your hair short before, it's probably not a good idea to do a trial run of that before the wedding. Also, don't overdo it with products. Hairspray is a necessity, but you still want your hair to look natural, not completely frozen in place. The same is true for gel and volumizing mousse. Too much could have you looking like a puffed up poodle.

Remember, comfort is important, too

2014-04-04-bridelookingoutawindow.jpg

Hairpieces and headbands can add extra glamour to your bridal look, but beware of anything that pokes or prods from the get-go. If a hair accessory bothers you from the start, you don't want to risk being miserable for the entire ceremony and reception. Look for accessories that require fewer pins or have fewer teeth.

Be YOU

2014-04-04-coutureweddingdress.jpg

Believe in being you. If others' opinions get too loud, always bring it back to what your gut is telling you. Your hairstyle has the power to define your entire bridal look, so you want it to compliment your personality, not someone else's.

Why Paulina Gretzky's Golf Digest Cover Isn't Sitting So Well With Some LPGA Pros (PHOTO)

Maxim model Paulina Gretzky doesn't play professional golf but she is engaged to PGA tour star Dustin Johnson and has two famous parents, hockey great Wayne Gretzky and actress Janet Jones Gretzky.

That apparently was enough for Golf Digest to put her on its cover. It was also enough to irk players on the LPGA Tour, the New York Times reports.

"We don’t get respect for being the golfers that we are," two-time major winner Stacy Lewis said, according to the paper. "Obviously, Golf Digest is trying to sell magazines. But at the same time you’d like to see a little respect for the women’s game."

Seven-time major winner Juli Inkster seemed to feel the same way. "It’s frustrating because it’s Golf Digest; it’s not Sports Illustrated’s swimsuit issue. I think they should maybe recognize some of the great women golfers that we have," she said, according to the Times.

(Story continues below)

Gretzky, who gained visibility by posting provocative selfies on social media, is not setting any precedent, USA Today notes. Kate Upton (who appeared with Arnold Palmer) and Golf Channel anchor Holly Sonders were the previous two women to grace the cover of the magazine. The last LPGA tour winner to make the cover was Lorena Ochoa in 2008.

"You know the old saying, sex sells," veteran pro Angela Stanford said, according to USA Today. "And nobody can argue with that. It's just the way it is. But the LPGA has some attractive women and very fit women, so why not use them? I'm just baffled by it."

Golf Digest Jerry Tarde defended the Gretzky cover in a statement, explaining that Gretzky, "ranks at the high end of the golf celebrity scene" and could attract new readers.

The article about Gretzky, who tells the magazine she once missed the ball in front of 30 people while playing in her dad's tournament, features the model doing golf-improvement exercises. The issue hits newsstands April 15.

Kate Moss has still got it.

The world-famous supermodel was spotted in a strapless two-piece by the pool in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, this week, soaking up the sun with her daughter Lila Grace and a few friends.

A model since the age of 14, Moss, now 40, was the poster-child of the "heroin chic" movement in the '90s. Nowadays, she's not only a cover girl but also a contributing editor for Vogue U.K. and a sought after designer-collaborator. Judging by the way she owns that black bikini look, we're hardly surprised she's still fashion's "It" girl.

Ariana Grande Denies Salary Rumors, Is Not Making More Than Jennette McCurdy On 'Sam & Cat'

Ariana Grande wants fans to know that a salary dispute is absolutely not the reason her "Sam & Cat" co-star Jennette McCurdy is feuding with Nickelodeon.

TMZ reported on April 2 that McCurdy is upset that Grande makes more money than her and it's threatening the fate of the show's future, but Grande took to Twitter on Friday, April 4, to set the record straight.

"I hate addressing rumors and I hate gossip but this is really bothering me. Jennette and I agreed upfront that we would be treated equally on this show in all regards (as we should be, considering we each work just as hard as the other on this show)," the 20-year-old actress and singer wrote in an extended tweet. "The rumors circulating about our contracts and our salary not being equal are absolutely ridiculous and false. I don't know who's putting these idiotic quotes out there but I thought I'd straighten it out and try to end this nonsense."

Grande went on to address the future of the show, writing, "As far as the show goes, I don't know what's happening because I'm not directly involved with the problem but I just wanted to address this one rumor in particular because I am NOT making more money than my costar, nor do I think I should be. So we can all move on and get out of our heads that this was a money thing cause I don't play like that at all. I am, have always been and always will be about equality and fairness."

Grande, added in a follow up tweet:

Whether or not "Sam & Cat" will be renewed for another season remains unknown at this time, however, McCurdy made it clear she is not happy with Nickelodeon. The 21-year-old was a no show at the Kids' Choice Awards this past weekend, and tried her best to explain to fans why she was absent, writing in an extended tweet:

A lot of you guys are asking why I didn't attend the KCAs.... I wish I could explain everything as thoroughly as I would like to, but unfortunately a simpler explanation is all I can write. I was put in an uncomfortable, compromising, unfair situation (many of you have guessed what it is) and I had to look out for me. I chose to not go because sticking up for what is right and what is fair is what my mom taught me is ALWAYS the most important thing. I want to thank those of you who have reached out with kind words of support, McCurdians and Arianators alike. No matter who or what you support, I believe in supporting fairness first. If you have done that, thank you.

With Grande firmly denying reports that the feud is financially motivated, it once again seems like the racy photos of McCurdy that leaked in March are at the root of the show's alleged problems.

23 Style Secrets From the Most Chic Woman I've Ever Met

I met Erin Hazeleton when she was writing for fashion magazines in New York City. This was more years ago than I care to remember -- but she looks the same. What struck me the first time I saw her, and still what strikes me every time I see her is how she exudes pure elegance. She reminds me of my godmothers, whose style tips I wrote about here, and indeed, their style philosophies are not that far apart.

2014-04-04-erinparis.jpg
Erin Hazleton (Courtesy of Erin)

Last week in Geneva we met at the Mirror Bar of the Metropole Hotel in Geneva, and I couldn't help but make her promise to put her style philosophy in writing. Here are her tips. Which means two things for me. First, I am going to clean out my closet. Second, when she comes to Washington, DC next weekend, we are going to go shopping together!

Thank you Erin for being an inspiration -- of style and of substance.

(As told to me by Erin Hazelton)

Fashion:

1. As Diana Vreeland once said: "Too much good taste can be boring." To offset this truth, I often find myself using leopard as a neutral. There is a fine line between being vulgar and interestingly chic. That said, never take your clothes too seriously. A little touch of humor -- or extravagance -- can make an otherwise uninteresting look seen instantly smart.

2. Keep it neat. If you are going to wear something oversized on top, keep the bottom skinny. If you are going to wear billowing trousers, tuck in your top to show off your waist or opt for something that is closefitting or waist-skimming, otherwise you risk looking messy.

2014-04-04-erinvenice.jpg
Erin Hazleton (Courtesy of Erin)

3. Dress for your body type, not for the latest trends. A cropped top and high-waisted trousers is a current look I like... but that doesn't mean everyone should wear it.
Learn to work with your body, highlighting the parts you like. Belt a small waist. Show off your shoulders. Camouflage the parts you are uncomfortable with. Narrow shoulders and no boobies? A deep V creates some shape up on top. My best friend thinks her hips are too big, but she has a tiny waist, so her favorite proportion is a full skirt with a high waist. Poof! Her hips are hidden under a swish of fabric, only her tiny waist left behind to be admired. I've also adopted this look for myself, but for the opposite reason: my hips are too narrow and I like to give the illusion of a more hourglass shape.

If you don't like your arms, don't wear sleeveless tops, even if you love the top. You aren't going to feel comfortable wearing it, your arms constantly on your mind. If you don't feel great, you don't look great.

4. Lulu Lemons are wonderful and flattering, but they are intended for the gym and, at a stretch, grocery shopping on your way home from the gym. Try to wear real clothes when you are not working out.

5. A boat neck is always flattering... and elegant.

6. My mother taught me to always buy high quality coats, shoes and handbags. They are the things you use everyday and the things everyone will notice first.

7. It's almost spring: show off your ankles. Trousers that hit just above the ankles are always chic... think of Grace Kelly and Audrey Hepburn. Pair these trousers with flat sandals or college loafers for day and choose an elegant pump or high-heeled sandal for evening.

Which brings us to shoes:

8. Just say no to big platform pump. I don't care how short you are, there is no excuse for looking like a stripper. If I see another actress walking the red carpet in a pair of these uniformly colored hooves, I'm going to start a petition.

If these kinds of shoes are hidden under a floor-length gown, fine -- no one can see them. But if you can see them? No. Absolutely not. If you need height opt for a sculpted wedge or an over-the-top, Miu Miu, proclamation platform or a shoe with a subtle, hidden platform, but if you think a two-inch platform is invisible because it's the same color as the rest of your shoe, guess again.

I'd sacrifice an inch or two of height in the name of fashion any day.

9. Everyone should own a nude shoe. Because the shoe matches your skin tone, there is nothing highlighting where your leg ends, which helps to give the illusion that they go on for much longer than they actually do. I've never heard anyone complain that her legs look too long.

Whether it's a flat sandal, a simple pump or high-heeled sandal in the perfect shade of nude, you can't go wrong: they go with everything. I usually pair mine with floral prints or bright colors... nude and red is a classic combination.

10. The black pump. It seems obvious, but there is nothing more useful than a black, closed toe pump. Elegant and timeless, this shoe adds quiet elegance to any look. A slight point to the toe is more modern and helps to add elongate the leg.

11. If you feel your outfit is a boring, the best way to make it more dynamic is to dress it up with an embellished shoe. Leopard print, gold or beaded and embroidered are among my fancy shoes of choice.

Other accessories:

12. Just like on Wall Street, more is never enough. A little gold letter on a chain around your neck isn't going to change your look, but a huge cuff on each wrist? Or a shining statement necklace or oversized Eddie Borgo tassel necklace peering out from under a white button down? Kind of brilliant.

"Too loud?" you say? Open up any J. Crew catalogue and ask yourself again. Prodigal is the new preppy.

13. Don't be scared of a fancy cell phone cover. A golden gate motif, a bejeweled peacock, a Chanel perfume bottle on a chain, or a cover entirely encrusted with pearls? Why not? Cell phones are already kind of obnoxious. Embrace it.

14. Pearls never go out of style. Never. I'm a big fan of wearing them in a more sensual or slightly punk way -- never too literally. I love a pearl choker, a Dior pearl "piercing" or one of Ana Khouri's pearl ear cuffs. I leave the tidy, boring single strand to my mum.

15. Handbags are another great way to add some character to a look. Never buy a boring one. If you go for a classic shape, why not buy it in red or kelly green? That said, it is difficult to wear a color everyday, so you will inevitably resort to a black, brown or nude everyday bag -- we all do.

This "everyday" handbag is the one you will wear most, so while it may feel boring -- it has to go with everything -- make it special. Let this bag be the one you spend the most on. Go for luxury. Hermès is obviously the ultimate choice, but perhaps not the most realistic. Look for a bag by your favorite designer or brand and make sure it's not an "it" bag... one that you've seen in every magazine or on the arms of all of your girlfriends. You want it to last, not look dated by next season. You also need to make sure it is big enough to hold all your stuff and has a shoulder strap. Being dominated by your handbag isn't chic, but being able to maneuver your way through the day with both hands definitely is.

If you the bag passes these tests, hold you breath and blow the better part of your paycheck. This is an investment piece.

Beauty:

16. Take care of your skin. Figure out what works for you and stick to it. The worst thing you can do is to constantly change your beauty routine. You'll aggravate your skin. I like a gentle cleanser, a lightening serum, a light moisturizer with SPF for day and something a bit heavier at night. Find an eye cream targeted to your "issues": dark circles, puffiness, fine lines. I also use a gentle, at home, tri-weekly peel to keep my pores clean and my skin glowing.

17. A light foundation hides a multitude of imperfections. Even skin tone is a must. Find a great foundation that perfectly matches your skin. (I like "invisible" formulas like Giorgio Armani Maestro Fusion Make-Up and Koh Gen Do Manifanshi Moisture Foundation). Apply with your fingers or a foundation brush and then cover up any residual spots and under eye circles with a cover-up (I swear by like Kevyn Aucoin's The Sensual Skin Enhancer).

18. Mascara or discrete eyelash extensions are really all you need to finish your makeup look for day. Healthy-looking skin and long lashes can take you quite a way...

19. If you need more, a bronzer or taupe/brown eye shadow brushed in a straight line and blended under your cheekbones adds instant definition. A bright pink or apricot blush on the apples of you cheeks makes you look fresh and awake. Like you just ran a 10K.

20. Try to keep your nails neat. If you don't have time to paint them, cover them with a clear coat of shine. This will also add an extra layer of protection against splitting and chipping. If you do have time for color, I'm partial to the classics, only using reds, almost invisible pinks and the occasional beige.

I go wild with jewelry, but nail art terrifies me.

21. Hair. Hair is a tough one. I'd love to get a blowout every other day, but that's not realistic (more like once every three months). Keep a travel-sized brush in your handbag or car and run it though your hair when no one's looking (preferably not in public) and you'll look like you just walked out of a salon... until the wind hits you, then game over.

22. I might get some flack for this, but don't dye your hair unless you have to. Chances are your natural color looks pretty good, even if you find it boring. Un-chemically treated hair often looks healthiest... and it won't go brassy or green after a few months. If you do need to color, opt for a natural, vibrant shade and then take good care of it. Nothing looks worse than dried out locks, ratty roots and artificial color.

23. I once met a countess who told me she always wears her long hair up in a chignon when she went out in the evening. That always stayed with me and a standard I often follow. But since my husband really likes my hair down, I break this guideline for him... sometimes.

Vincent Kartheiser's Shaved Hairline For 'Mad Men' Is Rather Unfortunate

No one can ever accuse Vincent Kartheiser of not being dedicated enough to ensure the authenticity of his "Mad Men" character Pete Campbell.

The actor arrived at the Season 7 premiere party at ArcLight Cinemas in Los Angeles on Wednesday, April 2, with a very unfortunate 5 o'clock shadow all along his hairline. The 34-year-old first shaved the top of his head and gained 25 pounds to play Campbell as he unraveled in 2012. He had since started to grow his hairline out, and was last seen at PaleyFest in February with a very uneven hairstyle.

Now that the cast is wrapping up filming the AMC series' final episodes, Karthesier says he'll miss the world that show runner Matt Weiner has created, but said that shaving his hairline isn't something that particularly concerns him. "It doesn't bother me, one way or the other," he told E! News.
