Why does my face look so terrible when I don't sleep enough?

There's a million reasons to get a good night's rest, but one of them is the simple fact that people tend to look terrible when they're exhausted.

In fact, a recently published study in the journal Sleep showed that eyes get more swollen and red, eyelids get droopier and skin gets more wrinkled when people skimp on shuteye. Meanwhile, another study showed that getting eight hours of sleep makes faces appear more attractive and healthier, compared with the faces of people who stay up all night.

But why do the eyes and skin on our face seem so affected by sleep (or lack thereof)?

Dr. Sherrif F. Ibrahim, M.D., Ph.D., assistant professor in the Department of Dermatology at the University of Rochester Medical Center, says that it has to do water retention, and the fact that the skin of the upper and lower eyelids is the the thinnest skin on our bodies.

"Any changes in hydration, whether you’re dehydrated or you have salt retention because you have a big meal the night before, are going to reflect in that thin skin so easily compared to any other skin in the body," Ibrahim tells HuffPost. Specifically, being dehydrated will produce a more sunken look, while having too much salt (like if you consumed a really salty meal the night before) will lead to water retention and a puffy look.

How sleep in particular affects this water retention is still not completely known, Ibrahim says. However, he speculates that it could have something to do with the reason for why a person stayed up late the night before.

"Usually when people are up late, if they're doing something, they're usually drinking or partying or crying, and that is more of a contributor to why their eyes might be puffier," he says.

As for those dark under-eye circles, a number of factors could be at play. Ibrahim notes that it's the blood vessels under the skin that are actually responsible for the darkish hue, so when you're dehydrated, you can better see the color of the blood vessels (which appear blue under the skin). In addition, as people get older and begin to enter middle age, they will begin to lose volume around the eyes, producing what is called a "tear trough." This "tear trough" casts a shadow where the cheek and eyelid meet, which also contributes to the appearance of darkening. While these are general factors responsible for contributing to darkening around the eyes, Ibrahim notes that lack of sleep will only exacerbate these effects. So get your beauty sleep!

Childhood Sweethearts With Down Syndrome To Finally Tie The Knot 30 Years After They Met

Austin Wayne Underwood and Jessica Smith, from Fort Worth, Texas, are both in their mid-30s and both have Down syndrome -- in fact, that's what brought them together in the first place.

Underwood's mom, Jan, has spent much of her life advocating for fair treatment to children with Down syndrome. She became a resource for other moms who have kids with Down syndrome to turn to for advice, Fort Worth Texas Magazine reported.

When Underwood and Smith were 3 years old, Smith's mom reached out to Jan and they've been close friends ever since. According to the outlet, the families have spent every Christmas together for the past 30 years, but in 2012, Underwood decided to break the tradition.

Fortunately, he had a legitimate excuse.

Underwood took Smith, who he has loved since childhood, for a drive in a limo to look at the Christmas lights. When he stepped out of the car, he got down on one knee and proposed.

Read the entire story at Fort Worth Texas Magazine.

The childhood sweethearts, who've decided they wanted a Western-themed wedding, are set to marry this summer.

"For me, it is about being a part of Jessica’s life and always being together," Underwood told Fort Worth Texas Magazine about their upcoming nuptials.

Bondi Hipsters Recreate Miranda Kerr GQ Photo Shoot With Thought-Provoking Results (NSFW)

Looking at Miranda Kerr's recent British GQ photo shoot, it's unlikely many thought: "What if a tattooed, bearded man was posing for these photos instead?" But two guys from Australia decided to do just that in order to highlight double standards in the fashion industry.

Dom Nader and Adrian Archer of Bondi Beach, Australia, are the men behind Bondi Hipsters, a parody duo whose YouTube mini-series focuses on them making it in the fashion biz. In an attempt to recreate Kerr's May 2014 British GQ shoot photographed by Mario Testino -- for which she posed mainly nude -- Nader stepped in front of the camera and bared some skin. He also mimicked some of Kerr's more personal quotes, which were about same-sex attraction and having mile-high orgasms.

(Some images below are NSFW)

"We thought it would be interesting to re-shoot Miranda Kerr's recent UK GQ shoot, using a man as the subject," Christiaan Van Vuuren, a writer for Bondi Hipsters, told The Huffington Post in an email from Sydney. "With this, we want to re-quote some of the things that she said in her GQ interview, but coming from the perspective of a male."

The laughable results of the Bondi Hipsters shoot is meant to shine a light on the industry's representation of women.

"As you can see, the shoot comes across very differently," Van Vuuren wrote. "We think that this is a good case for the over-sexualization of the female body in the high fashion world. For some reason as soon as you put a man in there, and have a man talking about same-sex curiosity and masturbation it's an entirely different thing that we aren't used to seeing in the media."

Check out photos from the Bondi Hipsters shoot below.

Peaches Geldof Dead: Model And Daughter Of Musician Bob Geldof & Paula Yates Dies At 25

Peaches Geldof, British TV presenter, model, and daughter of musician Bob Geldof and the late Paula Yates, has died at the age of 25, reports the BBC.

The 25-year-old was reportedly found dead at her home in Kent Monday afternoon, reports TMZ. Details surrounding the death are still unclear. Kent Police are treating the death as "unexplained and sudden."

Geldof is survived by her husband Thomas Cohen, her two children Astala Geldof–Cohen and Phaedra Geldof-Cohen, her father, and her sisters, Fifi Trixibelle Geldof, Pixie Geldof and half-sister Tiger Lily Hutchence-Geldof.

Just hours before her death, Geldof posted a photo of herself and her mother, who died in 2000 at the age of 41, as the result of a heroin overdose, to her Instagram account.

In a statement, confirming her death, her father told the BBC:

"Peaches has died. We are beyond pain. She was the wildest, funniest, cleverest, wittiest and the most bonkers of all of us. Writing 'was' destroys me afresh. What a beautiful child. How is this possible that we will not see her again? How is that bearable? We loved her and will cherish her forever. How sad that sentence is. Tom and her sons Astala and Phaedra will always belong in our family, fractured so often, but never broken. Bob, Jeanne, Fifi, Pixie and Tiger Geldof."

This is a developing story.

Kristie Alley Returns To Jenny Craig, Wants To Lose 30 Pounds

Kirstie Alley has led her weight loss journey publicly, and now the former "Fat Actress" is returning to Jenny Craig in her quest to whittle her waistline.

"I'm not like circus fat," the 63-year-old says in a new ad for the weight loss program. "I just wanna lose like 20 pounds. Because your food is so yummy, and I want my personal consultant Laura back!"

Ok, well she really wants to lose 30 pounds, but it doesn't take much for Alley to convince the company to take her back, and we can't say we're surprised since they go way back. Alley first signed on to be the face of Jenny Craig back in 2004 and managed to drop 75 pounds thanks to their pre-packaged meals, before parting ways in 2007.

"I have a goal to lose 30 pounds,” Alley told "Today" show co-host Matt Lauer on April 7 of her new weight loss goals. “Thirty pounds is a lot.”

The actress explained that a combination of “man troubles” and overeating during the holidays made it too easy for her to regain some of the weight she had shed. Alley's weight has famously yo-yoed over the years, and since leaving Jenny Craig, she claims she's lost 100 pounds thanks to Organic Liaison, a weight loss program she helped develop.

And while she's gained some of that weight back, Alley isn't abandoning her Organic Liaison line, but she's incorporating it into her new diet plan. According to People magazine, supplements from her line will now be sold at Jenny Craig centers.

And beyond her captivating voice and rise to fame, we will always remember Billie for her sensational style. From her signature Gardenia hairpieces to her glamorous gowns, it's easy to see why Billie is such an icon.

This Is What Happens When You Marry A 'Game Of Thrones' Fan

It's only fitting that a wedding on the same day as the "Game of Thrones" season four premiere would feature a nod to the show's most infamous families.

A pretty clever fan got married Sunday wearing traditional suit-and-tie wedding garb. But while taking photos, he and his groomsmen revealed the secret hiding beneath their classy threads: GoT-themed T-shirts!

The groom -- who posted the pics to Reddit -- rocked a House Stark shirt (risky at a wedding, huh?) while his groomsmen repped the other houses including House Lannister and House Baratheon. Of course, when a Lannister and a Stark get together, this is bound to happen:

According to the comments on Reddit, the wedding took place in Orlando, Florida and yes, "Rains of Castamere" did play while people took their seats.

'Human Barbie' Valeria Lukyanova Is Revolted By Kids And Is Racist

$

Valeria Lukyanova, better known as Human Barbie, might seem like a figment of Photoshop imagination, but, when GQ's Michael Idov traveled to Ukraine to interview her, he found out Lukyanova is all too real.

Lukyanova first made headlines in 2012 for her living doll appearance, with large breasts, waist-length blond hair and wide eyes. She calls herself Amatue in her YouTube videos, which focus on transcendental thought and self-help.

Idov met Lukyanova in Odessa, where she consumed nothing but carrot juice with chutney (she's expressed a desire to be a breatharian, meaning she would not eat or drink and would attempt to subsist on air and light). It wasn't long before she dropped a bombshell, claiming that standards of beauty have changed "because of the race-mixing."

"For example, a Russian marries an Armenian," Lukyanova told GQ. "They have a kid, a cute girl, but she has her dad's nose. She goes and files it down a little, and it's all good. Ethnicities are mixing now, so there's degeneration, and it didn't used to be like that. Remember how many beautiful women there were in the 1950s and 1960s, without any surgery? And now, thanks to degeneration, we have this. I love the Nordic image myself. I have white skin; I am a Nordic type -- perhaps a little Eastern Baltic, but closer to Nordic."

The interview even touched on Lukyanova's disinterest in having a family.

"It's unacceptable to me. The very idea of having children brings out this deep revulsion in me. Most people have children to fulfill their own ambitions, not to give anything," she says, adding later, "I'd rather die from torture because the worst thing in the world is to have a family lifestyle."

Last year, VICE made Lukyanova the focus of a documentary titled "Space Barbie" (she once thought she was from the planet Venus). She explained in the film that she uses her physical appearance to promote her spiritual ideals.

Kim Kardashian Instagrams Photo Of Thailand Snagged From Google Images

In one of the oddest Kardashian news items we've ever come across, it appears that Kim Kardashian Instagrammed a photo she found on Google Images and captioned it, "Thank you for the beautiful memories Thailand."

It's just weird because Kardashian and her family were vacationing in Thailand last week, and combined they took about a million photos of their trip. Why the 33-year-old would choose an image she found on Google over one of her own photos makes little sense. Attempts to demystify the matter has yet to be resolved as request for comment made to Kardashian's rep has not been returned at this time.

While we're not losing any sleep over this, we're just going on record to say we expect more from our reality stars.

Striking Photos Aim To Redefine 'Natural' Female Beauty

$

In 2007, London-based photographer Ben Hopper started "Natural Beauty," a photo series designed to challenge what he described as the societal "brainwashing" done by the beauty industry.

Now, nearly seven years later, Hopper released his first official set of these photographs to The Huffington Post. Using an eclectic group of models, actresses, designers and friends, Hopper's pictures highlight a woman's beauty, her armpit hair, and the timely reminder that those two things are in no way mutually exclusive.

The images play on the fact that armpit and body hair have been stigmatized both here in the United States and abroad. Rarely, if ever, do you see a woman in the public eye who isn't conscious of removing much of her body hair.

"As I matured as a person and an artist, I realized I liked [armpit hair]," Hopper told The Huffington Post. "I think it can be a beautiful look."

After finding willing models, Hopper realized that even his subjects weren't immune to body-hair anxiety. He told The Huffington Post that one model who was growing out her armpit hair for the project got so "grossed-out" while doing so that she chose not to go through with the shoot.

"The whole point [of the series] is contrast between fashionable female beauty and the raw unconventional look of female armpit hair," Hopper told HuffPost. "I expect [the photos] will surprise a lot of people and I guess, in a way, that is one of my intentions."

Hopper's photo of Swedish actress Emilie Bostdt, who grew out her body hair for the series (see below), was the first of the pictures to capture a large audience's attention when he posted it on social media in February. After the picture went viral on his Facebook page, Hopper decided the black background would be the format for his entire series.

While Hopper's series intentionally challenges the beauty status quo, he's not trying to make a grand statement about what any individual woman should or should not do with her body hair.

"I don't want to say that I want women to start growing their armpit hair," Hopper told The Huffington Post. "I just think that it's a possibility and people shouldn't dismiss it. I'd like people to just question [beauty standards], the whole thing."

Jay Z Sparks Controversy With Five Percent Nation Bling

During a recent Knicks game at the Barclays Center, Jay Z sported a Five Percent Nation medallion, sparking outrage and general confusion about whether reverse racism is a thing (spoiler: it definitely isn't). The impractically-sized necklace is a symbol for the group, which was founded in 1963 by Clarence 13 X, when he broke from the Nation Of Islam.

Although there are no direct comments about white people in the tenets of Five Percent Nation, their public perception is certainly affiliated with not really loving white folks or, as Michael Muhammad Knight explained in an essay for Vice, "The first lesson I learned from the Five Percent was simple: F--k white people. Seriously. White people are devils."

As NPR explained in a 2006 article on the group, the founding concept is that "Ten percent of the people of the world know the truth of existence, and those elites opt to keep 85 percent of the world in ignorance and under their controlling thumb." Other essential ideas include the belief that "black people are the original people of the planet Earth" and "the fathers and mothers of civilization."

This is not the first time Jay Z has worn the eight-pointed star with the number seven in the middle. The Christian Post reports that he wore the symbol while promoting "Magna Carta Holy Grail." It has also been noted that the phrase "Peace God" in "Run This Town" is likely a nod to Five Percenters.

According to the Post, when asked whether the symbol had meaning for him, Jay Z said, "A little bit." So, this is obviously a dogmatic commitment deserving of controversy. He is not, however, is not officially affiliated with the group. “Jay Z is not an active member — no one has vouched for him,” Saladin Allah, a representative of the group said to The Post. “It was always understood that you don’t wear the regalia if you don’t totally subscribe to the life.”

Additionally, for people who know anything about basketball: apparently Carmelo Anthony also thinks white folks are devils (or at least has controversial taste in jewelry).

Who Wore It Better: These Anime Characters Or Their Poser Humans?

Anime fans are a devoted bunch, showing up to anime conventions en force to profess their deep, deep love for the animated art form -- a style that focuses more on the realism of its environment than the characters themselves.

Attendees show up in "cosplay" (short for "costume play"), submerged in the ethos of their favorite characters, whether they're from anime shows, video games, or -- as seen below -- even "The Hunger Games" and "It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia." People get lost in these alter-egos, but unlike the red carpet, it's not a catty scene. If two people show up in the same cosplay, it's as if they'd just found their soul mate.

Kombucha: 7 Beauty Products Made From This Fermented Tea

$

In the past six months or so, I've noticed that the vending machines I frequent for a midday snack have gradually been taken over by bottles of Kombucha tea. These tart probiotic teas are a far cry from the cavity-inducing sweet teas that I savor while visiting my home in South Carolina.

However, thanks to ageless celebrities like Halle Berry and Gwyneth Paltrow, who have been spotted sipping on this fermented tea, and its purported health claims that it helps to remedy acne, fatigue and headaches, just about everybody wants a taste of Kombucha. Naturally, this got me wondering about the benefits of this tea, which dates back 2,000 years ago to ancient China.

A 2012 L'Oreal Research & Innovation study found that Kombucha extract was "beneficial to the skin, helping to maintain moisture and elasticity so it appears more even in tone and texture." No wonder it has popped up in cleansers, eye gels and moisturizers.

Below are seven Kombucha beauty products and their benefits.
