Will the Full Bush Trend Continue Into Summer? Why Waxing is Getting Even More Complicated

By Amanda Chatel

Lately, I've been thinking a lot about my pubic hair. See, after a winter of letting things grow wild, it's time to think about the upcoming months. And this year, I'm especially conflicted.

I don't think I'm alone. After years and years of the Brazilian wax being the reigning craze, apparently, the full bush is back in style. Some women are now skipping the full Brazilian and opting for a "full bush Brazilian;" a wax that leaves a full-bush (with the labia and butt crack still stripped bare).

Some trendsetters are going even further: when American Apparel displayed their full-bushed mannequins a few months ago, everyone took notice. As a representative for the brand put it, the mannequin was meant as a celebration of natural beauty, as well as a call to their clientele to "explore the idea of what is 'sexy' and consider their comfort with the natural female form."

2014-04-15-Hair1.jpg

Cameron Diaz really exploded the trend when she wrote in The Body Book this year:

Do you really want a hairless vagina for the rest of your life? It's a personal decision, but I'm just putting it out there: Consider leaving your vagina fully dressed, ladies. Twenty years from now, you will still want to be presenting it to someone special, and it would be nice to let him or her unwrap it like the gift that it is.

But what's being dubbed a trend may actually be nothing new: polls have found that women who keep things natural with their "down there" hair are actually in the majority. And despite porn's influence, apparently, most men report being into it.

But there may be one big exception: swimsuit season. With "normcore" pubes supposedly all the rage, will the beaches really be chockfull of women and their pubic hair this summer? History may provide a clue.

The Origins of Waxing

Waxing the pubic area is actually not a new trend. In certain Middle Eastern societies, the removal of body hair -- all of it -- was considered "proper" hygiene. There's even evidence that total body hair removal dates back as far as 4,000 to 3,000 BC in some cultures.

2014-04-15-Hair2.jpg

In ancient Egypt, pubic hair was considered uncivilized.

Here in the United States, body hair removal didn't really kick into gear until the 1940s, when bathing suits started getting teeny-weeny. It was then that the hair removal along the bikini line became a concern, because, as we all know, lack of hair tends to be equated with femininity. Despite the bikini line receding, full bushes tended to remain intact underneath.

2014-04-15-Hair3.jpg

By the time 1972's iconic porno Deep Throat came out, women still tended to be as hairy as men between their legs. But just two years later, there was a new look on the scene -- at least in the world of pornography. The first "pink shot" of an entirely pubic hair-free woman appeared in Hustler in 1974.

What soon followed was a virtual industry of hairless vulvas. Perhaps trying to appeal to many men's fantasy worlds, women outside of the porn industry started waxing their nether regions in droves.

2014-04-15-Hair4.jpeg

By 1987, thanks to seven sisters from Brazil who opened a salon in New York City, a full-fledged trend was born.

But Is Waxing Dangerous?

I got my first Brazilian when I moved to New York City because I was a city girl, and that's what I thought city girls did. I loved it. I felt like walking sex and loved being so aware of everything that came in contact with my newly-bald area. Even taking showers had never been so much fun!

That was, until I noticed a small red bump in the middle of my pubic bone. At first, I thought my skin was just being sensitive, but after a few days of excruciating pain, I was at my doctor being told I had a staph infection from my Brazilian wax.

The scariest part? The cause of the infection wasn't necessarily that the salon I went to was unclean. As my doctor explained to me, that area of skin is so sensitive it needs pubic hair. The hair is there for a reason: It provides a cushion and protection from friction that happens during all that bumping and grinding.

After almost two weeks of antibiotics, the infection was gone, but a scar remained. And I'm one of the lucky ones -- some women end up with cellulitis; a life-threatening bacterial infection that can put you in the hospital for a week or longer.

2014-04-15-Hair5.jpg
Brigitte Bardot was probably practicing some form of pubic hair removal.

A Hairy Dilemma

I've been going au natural since, with the exception of right before bikini season last year. I struggle with the decision every summer, because I both love being hairless and fear another run-in with infection.

Usually, I just compromise by opting for shaving along the bikini line -- which means razor burn. You'd think I'd have picked up on my body's signals that I should just leave it be by now. But I can't help feeling I don't want to subject children on the beach to my pubic hair.

After all, I remember being a kid myself and wondering what all that "mess" was when I saw those women on the beach... before I grew a "mess" of my own, that is.

"I let it go to hell during the winter except when I have an OB/GYN appointment or if it starts to get really bad. In the summer, I will shave or wax so that I don't look horrible in swimsuit," my friend Joy, a 31-year-old personal assistant, told me.

Horrible. That's the word that coincides with pubic hair for some women. It may be our decision to shave or not, but you have to ask yourself, what's so 'horrible' about your natural state?

2014-04-15-Hair6.jpeg

Statistically, pubic hair removal does go up when a bathing suit is involved.

The thing with trends is they are just that: trends. If women want to rock the full bush all winter, then go bald once the summer arrives, then I say that's their own personal choice. While a full bush may be "in" at the moment, it ultimately comes down to what women really want for their own bodies. If people turn their back on going au natural June through August, then so be it.

I just hope it isn't because we think there's something fundamentally ugly about our natural state.

Prince William Flies Economy Class, Orders A Water

If you're not already in love with Prince William, get ready to swoon.

The Duke of Cambridge shirked the royal treatment Sunday when he flew economy class on an American Airlines flight from Memphis to Dallas. He was on his way back to the UK after celebrating a friend's wedding in Tennessee.

Memphis-based reporter Eli Ross of Local 24 News spotted Prince William on the flight and spread the word via Twitter.

Since posted, the photos have been retweeted dozens of times.

The prince kept it even more low-budget when he reportedly ordered only water during the flight, which he -- gasp! -- paid for himself.

It is not the first time that the royals have tried to save money, as the queen and her family were recently asked to rein in their spending.

All we can say is we wish we were the lucky ones to have been sitting near him on the plane.

Justin Timberlake Wrote *NSYNC's 'Gone' For Michael Jackson

*NSYNC fans should be interested to learn that one of the boy band's biggest hit songs was actually intended for the King of Pop.

Calling into "On Air with Ryan Seacrest" on Tuesday, May 6, Justin Timberlake chatted about his new song with Michael Jackson, "Love Never Felt So Good," and revealed that he wrote *NSYNC's "Gone" for the late pop icon.

“Interestingly enough, there were songs on the last *NSYNC album ... one song in particular, 'Gone,' originally I wrote that song for Michael. I’ve always been a big fan of him and I think back to ... it made me reminisce to the times he performed at the VMAs with *NSYNC, where we performed at Madison Square Garden with him, and the numerous meetings I had had with him in the past just about music," Timberlake told Seacrest, adding that it was just by chance that *NSYNC ended up with the song, which peaked at no. 11 on the Billboard Hot 100.

"At an A&R meeting I said, 'Well I wrote this song and it's kind of sitting around. Everybody heard it and we just decided to cut it. I've been lucky enough to work with a lot of great people in the music industry, and some of the greats have always said, 'A good song is a good song.'"

It's not the first time that Timberlake ended up with a song that was intended for Jackson either. According to Billboard, The Neptunes first offered "Rock Your Body" to Jackson for his 2001 album, "Invincible," but he passed. The song, which appeared on Timberlake's debut solo album, "Justified," would go on to peak at no. 5 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Yep, Jennifer Lawrence made falling at major events the thing to do.

"Nashville" star Hayden Panettiere's Dennis Blasso dress proved to be more than she bargained for, at least when it came to taking the stairs. The 24-year-old pulled (what will now be known as) a Jennifer Lawrence and ever-so-gracefully fell on the red carpet as she was leaving the Met Ball on May 5.

Lawrence, of course, is still the queen of clumsy moments having fallen up the stairs after tripping on her Dior gown when she went to accept the Oscar for Best Actress in 2013, and then somehow managing to fall again on the Oscars red carpet the following year.

Eczema May Reduce Skin Cancer Risk, Study In Mice Suggests

For anyone used to the discomfort of eczema, some welcome good news: The skin condition seems to reduce skin cancer risk, according to new research. The preliminary study, conducted in mice, suggests that the immune system response caused by eczema may limit tumor formation, possibly by shedding the pre-cancerous cells.

King's College London researchers replicated some of the skin defects commonly seen in people with eczema in genetically engineered mice lacking three important skin proteins. These so-called "knockout" mice along with a control group of typical, "wild-type" mice were then treated with two known carcinogens.

About 16 weeks later, the researchers found six times as many benign tumors in typical mice than in the knockout mice. Nearly all of the typical mice had at least one benign tumor, while half of the knockout mice had no tumors. Knockout mice exhibited a significantly stronger inflammatory reaction in response to one of the carcinogen treatments, notably shedding cells from the skin that could have become cancerous. The researchers propose this response may be what offered the knockout mice protection from developing more tumors.

"We are excited by our findings, as they establish a clear link between cancer susceptibility and an allergic skin condition in our experimental model," Professor Fiona Watt, director of the Centre for Stem Cells and Regenerative Medicine at King's College London said in a statement. "They also support the view that modifying the body's immune system is an important strategy in treating cancer. I hope our study provides some small consolation to eczema sufferers –- that this uncomfortable skin condition may actually be beneficial in some circumstances," she added.

Skin has been increasing worldwide over the last few decades, according to the World Health Organization. Globally, there are between 2 and 3 million cases of non-melanoma skin cancers and around 132,000 cases of melanoma skin cancers each year, and one in every three cancer diagnoses is a skin cancer.

Miley Cyrus Denies Drug Overdose Put Her In The Hospital

With Miley Cyrus about to restart her Bangerz tour on May 6, she's speaking out against rumors that it was a drug overdose that put her in the hospital, forcing her to cancel several shows.

"I'm the poster child for good health," the 21-year-old said at a press conference at the O2 arena in London on Tuesday. "You have no idea how ready I am. There is nothing I would rather not do than lay in a bed for two weeks. It was the most miserable two weeks of my life."

Cyrus has repeatedly vocalized how "devastated" she was to cancel shows, and took the opportunity to clear the air amid rumors as to what really sent her to the hospital on April 15.

"I didn't have a drug overdose. I took some shitty antibiotics that a doctor gave me for a sinus infection and I had a reaction," Cyrus told the press.

The "We Can't Stop" singer said she's now feeling "better than ever," and that the experience taught her a lot about taking care of herself.

"I'm probably the only one on this tour who doesn't drink or smoke before a show, as I take this really seriously," Cyrus said. "It's almost like being an athlete being up here, because if someone was f--ked up, they definitely couldn't do my show."

Cyrus previously opened up about her hospitalization telling Ryan Seacrest, "It was so scary … I had basically been poisoning myself with something I didn’t know I was really scary allergic to. I was on this medicine for five days and everything was all good and on the sixth day, I just woke up … I couldn't breath and my skin -- everything -- was going insane."

This girl is on fire! Alicia Keys is officially the new face of Givenchy perfumes.

“I’m honored to introduce the world to the newest scent by Givenchy,” Keys told WWD. “Givenchy has long been one of the world’s most iconic luxury fashion houses, and a personal favorite of mine,” she added.

This marks the first time that the Grammy Award-winning singer has ventured into the beauty biz. Most of her attention, beyond music, has been focused on fashion -- namely her collection of signature kicks for Reebok Classic. Nevertheless, the singer-songwriter is in good company -- Liv Tyler, Justin Timberlake, Uma Thurman and Amanda Seyfried have all fronted Givenchy perfumes.

We can't wait to see Alicia's ads for the yet-to-be-revealed fragrance once they launch in September.

Clothing Company Desigual Wins Award For Creepiest Mother's Day Ad Of All Time

This Mother's Day, families all over the world will take the time to celebrate moms. For some people, however, it's an opportunity to tackle what really matters: tricking men into getting them pregnant.

Wait, what?

You read right. Clothing company Desigual debuted a shocking commercial in honor of the holiday, featuring a woman who really wants to be a mom. So much so, that she's willing to poke holes in her stash of condoms to do it.

The ad, which was made as a form of protest to the restrictive abortion laws in Spain, is meant to be a joke. However, the response by customers, who have taken to their social media accounts to speak out against it, has been so overwhelmingly negative that the company has since removed that part of the ad, and the regional government is considering banning it completely.

She bottles her own water. She eats clay. She apparently doesn't even have a cell phone. In countless interviews and profiles, we're reminded that Shailene Woodley, America's favorite hippie, is not your typical star. Neither is her red carpet style. Forget just the dresses and the hoodies over the dresses, Woodley has perfected the art of the hang-ten hands, also known as the "cowabunga hands" (thank you, Cosmo).

At this year's Met Ball, Woodley took her signature hand gesture to a whole new level, prompting HuffPost Entertainment to find out how this super-chill move became her Miley tongue. Behold, the evolution of Shailene Woodley's shaka sign:

Julia Roberts Surprises Oscars Pizza Delivery Man

It turns out that Ellen DeGeneres still has a few surprises up her sleeve for Edgar Martirosyan, the owner of Big Mama's & Papa's Pizza who delivered three pies to the star-studded audience at the 86th annual Academy Awards in March.

In addition to surprising him with a with a very generous $1,000 tip when he appeared on her show the day after the Oscars, DeGeneres also introduced him to his favorite actress, Julia Roberts.

During Roberts segment on "The Ellen DeGeneres Show" on Wednesday, May 7, the actress was game to hide when DeGeneres invited Martirosyan back out on stage. She surprised him with a tap on the shoulder, after DeGeneres had just casually mentioned that Roberts was his favorite actress.

Martirosyan was stunned when he realized just who was standing behind him, and a wide smile broke out across his face as he hugged the actress, before giving her a rather charming kiss on the hand.

"It's nice to see you again. What a sweet reaction," Roberts told Martirosyan.

And because it was "The Ellen DeGeneres Show" everyone in the audience got pizza. We just love a happy ending -- especially when it ends with pizza.

Justin Bieber has himself a new model friend by the name of Yovanna Ventura.

The 20-year-old pop star has been photographed out with the 18-year-old beauty, a high school student from Miami who models and promotes products on Instagram, according to E! News. The two apparently met back in March with later rendezvous in Miami and Las Vegas.

"He reached out and they started talking in late March," a supposed insider told E! News. "In early April, when he came to Miami they hung out together for that weekend while he was recording in the studio. It was for a couple of days, the weekend. They were getting to know each other ... They continued to stay in touch and communicate."

On Monday, May 5, Bieber and Ventura were spotted at the beach in Venice, California. They rode a rickshaw and listened to a street musician. He shared a shirtless photo from the day on his Instagram.

She has been posting photos of the "Boyfriend" singer to her Instagram as well.

Georgia May Jagger Is The New Face Of Thierry Mugler Fragrance, Follows In Jerry Hall's Footsteps

While we know of at least one supermodel who doesn't want her daughter following in her footsteps, Georgia May Jagger seems just fine taking cues from her famous mum, Jerry Hall.

Having already scored modeling gigs for Hudson Jeans, Chanel, Versace and Rimmel London, Georgia May is adding another bullet point to her list of credits as the new face of Thierry Mugler's Angel fragrance. The gap-toothed beauty will star in a new ad coming out in June, followed by a TV commercial launching this fall.

Georgia May's mother, Jerry, was the French fashion designer's leading lady on the Paris runways, and she fronted his iconic Angel perfume back in the '90s.

"Angel is a fragrance very connected to my childhood, and it continues to fascinate me now as much as ever," Georgia May said in a statement. "It’s very exciting to become the new face of the Angel woman … 19 years after my mother was the Angel muse!”

While the 22-year-old is blessed with her mother's good looks and shiny, blonde locks, we're confident that she will shake things up with her edgy style (with credit due to her rock 'n roll dad Mick Jagger, of course).

Where Are America's Hardcore Fashionistas? Hint: Not in New York or LA

You'd think that New York City, the center of American fashion, or Los Angeles, the center of American celebrity culture, would be where you'd find America's hardcore fashionistas.

You'd be more wrong than Helena Bonham Carter's wardrobe choices.

A new ranking by SpareFoot puts Winston-Salem, N.C., at the top of the fashionista stack among the 100 most populated U.S. metro areas.

Why Winston-Salem? Adjusting for regional pricing differences, women in Winston-Salem spend more per capita on clothing, shoes, dry cleaning, alternations, jewelry, watches, and closet and storage products than women in any other major metro area. A typical fashionista in Winston-Salem spends $1,519 a year.

SpareFoot relied on data from the U.S. Census Bureau, the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis and Geographic Research Inc. to come up with the ranking.

Here are the top 15 metro areas on SpareFoot's list of America's Fashionista Meccas.

1. Winston-Salem, N.C.
2. Charlotte, N.C.
3. Grand Rapids, Mich.
4. Greenville, S.C.
5. Knoxville, Tenn.
6. Madison, Wis.
7. Daytona Beach, Fla.
8. Des Moines, Iowa
9. Indianapolis
10. Austin, Texas
11. Raleigh, N.C.
12. Spokane, Wash.
13. Ogden, Utah
14. Worcester, Mass.
15. Columbus, Ohio

2014-05-06-statementnecklace.jpg

Southern metro areas sewed up several spots in the top 15.

"In the South, they love bold colors, chevron prints, monograms and statement necklaces," fashion blogger Ashley Tarkington said. "In bigger cities, they stick with basics that they're comfortable with and don't change it up as much."

As for New York City and LA, they came in at No. 96 and No. 100, respectively. Yep, Los Angeles is dead last on the list.

For complete details about the fashionista rankings, visit The SpareFoot Blog.

Now, you may be wondering why an online marketplace for self-storage units compiled a list of America's Fashionista Meccas. Think about it. Some of these fashionistas might have crowded closets and need storage units to stash their last-season Jimmy Choos or Christian Louboutons.

John Egan is editor in chief at SpareFoot, an Austin, Texas-based startup that operates the country's largest online marketplace for self-storage units.

Note: This blog post was adapted from a post that initially appeared on The SpareFoot Blog. Freelance writer Elizabeth Whalen reported, wrote and crunched the numbers for the original blog post.

Japanese Restaurant Gives Solo Customers Stuffed Animals For Company

Hate dining alone? One Japanese restaurant has a semi-awkward yet totally adorable solution for all your table-for-one woes.

The Moomin Café in Japan seats solo diners with cuddly stuffed animals to make the experience of dining alone a little less lonely, Food Beast reports. (Sure, the stuffies might not be the greatest conversationalists, but they have to be better listeners than your last date.)

The cafés are themed around The Moomins, a Swedish-Finnish book and animated series about a family of friendly hippo-esque critters.

Each location features food, drink and decor inspired by the whimsical franchise, but the main draw is clearly the option to dine with a wide-eyed Moomin of your own.

(We'd just like to point out that texting at dinner is rude, even when your date is a stuffed animal.)

We're conflicted here: Would dining with a plush-y as your plus-one make going to a restaurant by yourself more palatable -- or does it just make the whole situation that much more embarrassing? Tell us what you think in the comments!
